elcome! Please accept this as your invitation to our 5th Big Gully Farm Bull Sale on Thursday, Dec. 13. The sale will again take place at the farm, but beginning at 4:30 p.m. MST, a half hour earlier than last year. We would love to host you, along with your family and friends, for supper and drinks at this pre-Christmas event. We must start by expressing our gratitude to those who have invested and supported us with their previous purchases – we are appreciative and proud of the repeat and local support that has been afforded us. As in years past, the sale is accessible online through www. LiveAuctions.tv simultaneously with the live sale. Shari has stepped away from LiveAuctions.tv to spend more time meeting our goals here, and therefore we can hopefully be more accessible the evening of the sale than ever before. If you are intending to view online, please register for a buyer number several days in advance to allow a relaxed evening during the sale. To sum up our current philosophy and direction, we feel Herefords have tremendous opportunity in the commercial bull market to transmit their inherent structural integrity, docility, hair, hardiness and feed efficiency to the Canadian cowherd when given the opportunity by cowboys, ranchers and farmers. This is especially apparent if considering subsequent advances in pigment, udder quality, milk, moderation of frame, muscle and calving ease. We only have to look Stateside to see that the upside of the breed is limitless so long as we aspire to be great, avoid complacency, are willing to embrace technology, and work diligently to improve every day. Our goal is keeping the future and the big picture at the forefront of every decision we make. For us, this takes considering as much information as possible, including: visual appraisal, pedigrees, herd tours, longevity, EPDs, genomics, ultrasound, etc. We believe acquiring genetics, regardless of location, that successively generate more profitable and attractive cattle or beef for each segment of our industry’s supply chain is paramount. L A N C E & S H A R I LE AC H M A N

We are nowhere close to where we hope to be, but the margin for improvement provides humility and motivation. The offering of 2-year-old bulls are uniform and consistent with some low birth weight options and an even mix of horned and hetero polled cattle. The bull calves are generally younger than last year, but cumulatively share docility, structural integrity, body dimension, muscle, udder quality and continually increasing genetic strength for calving ease, birth weight, milk, scrotal and carcass. After a few years absence, we have a group of commercial heifers for sale this year. These include a Hereford X Angus bred heifer, eight Hereford X Angus heifer calves and three Simmental X Hereford heifer calves. These heifers are from mostly purebred Angus or Hereford dams with Hereford sired calves by 2017 Agribition RBC Supreme Top 10 Finalist BIG-GULLY 102 HURLEY 271C and the red Simmental sired calves by WHEATLAND BULL 699D. Operationally, we look forward to 2019 with more enthusiasm than any prior. Since arriving home from school, a large number of cattle have been culled annually, so we have stayed stable so far as inventory. However, with a large group of heifers and the purchase of a polled set of young cows, we will plan to shift from calving 140 to between 170-180 head this winter. We are really optimistic about the youthful group of cows, forthcoming matings and the ability additional numbers should provide in bolstering the depth and quality of what will likely be a similar or slightly increasing number of bulls to sell in 2019. No matter the breeds involved, in our opinion, there are undeniable economic and production benefits to using complimentary breeds and capitalizing on hybrid vigour/ heterosis. One of the most impressive images a commercial producer can convey is a pasture of cattle with near identical color, breed influence, body type, and calf appearance due to a consistent, regimented crossbreeding system. Though it may raise eyebrows, a true strength of Herefords is not being extreme or excessive in terms of output for particular (continued on page 4)

traits, thereby providing the versatile, low input foundation to establish optimum expression of traits when mated to virtually any other breed. In the profit equation, producers often do an exceptional job of measuring outputs, such as weaning weight and subsequent dollars generated. However, rarely are inputs and cow maintenance costs scrutinized as harshly. If they were, Herefords would likely factor favourably in contributing to an efficient, cost-effective maternal base that could be mated to terminal or high-performance sires to optimize output in feeder progeny. In striving to attract progressive commercial operations to consider implementing our genetics, we hope to establish a particular expectation to be synonymous with Big Gully Farm. Bulls from here should be expected to share and offer several criteria, including:

Acquisition of polled cows and future homozygous polled bull offering We are excited to announce the acquisition of 30 Polled Hereford cows from Phantom Creek Livestock owned by Doug and Wanda Mann of Swift Current, Sask. With the increasing interest in polled breeding options, we want to keep our sale roster diverse. Thus, we elected to acquire a base of homozygous polled cows that will be bred to homozygous polled bulls via AI and natural service. For many years we have been implementing polled bulls in our breeding program, but necessarily encounter all heterozygous progeny in the first generation from our horned cows. This slows the process of developing an exclusively homozygous polled group of females as quickly as we would like to provide the number of bull options that those who may be interested deserve. Doug and Wanda have dedicated a tremendous amount of work, time, expense and thought into coupling phenotype and breeding values to develop a set of cows with strong private treaty, commercial bull acceptance. The cows are correct uddered, sound structured, maternally driven and highly advanced in regard to data collection and genetic enhancement. We will expect to merchandise the first set of bulls resulting from these cows in December of 2019 with some unique mating combinations developed at Phantom Creek.

• Being docile, sound, muscular, big bodied and attractive • Having sires sourced from breeders of high-quality cattle, but more importantly, operations with integrity, professionalism, humility and talent that derive their income from cattle production • Dams with high quality udders, desirable body capacity/muscle, structural integrity, youthfulness and maternal character • Strong multi-trait EPD profiles • Genomically-Enhanced EPDs to provide greater confidence in genetic merit at a young age • Ultrasound carcass data collected on each bull and all heifer counterparts as well at a year of age • Parentage verification, genetic-abnormality free status and horned/polled status on each bull • Records of calving ease; birth, weaning and yearling weights; scrotal; mature cow weight; udder scores; ultrasound back fat, ribeye, and intramuscular fat for each eligible animal in the herd. As proponents of expected progeny differences, we have put considerable selection pressure on these for generations. Obviously, EPDs are a tool to use as each breeder deems fit; therefore we couple them with physical selection and feel competitive from a data standpoint in being able to evaluate trait measures that the most capable eye can’t ascertain. All sale bulls have been parentage verified and offer genomically enhanced EPDs, revealing a higher degree of accuracy in knowing the true genetic merit of the cattle at a younger age. If you are unfamiliar with the potential utility of EPDs or genomics, we would gladly discuss them prior to the sale. The bottom line is we believe in raising the most physically impressive cattle we can while developing strong, multi-trait genetic profiles in those same livestock. Free of charge, bulls will be developed till next spring, double vaccinated with Fusogard, calves ultrasounded for carcass merit by Shari, evaluated for breeding soundness and delivered when best suits they buyer. We know that unforeseen circumstances potentially arise with semen testing and breeding. As a precau-

tion the bulls have been scrotal measured by the local veterinarian to assure satisfactory development. However, if a concern after spring breeding soundness evaluations or during actual breeding arises, our intent is to be honest and straight forward with you and we expect the same in terms of finding a satisfactory resolution. We anticipate the bulls will have a BSE performed the third week of March as the weather improves and the bulls are mature enough. Rest assured, we have spare 2-year-olds, an assortment of bull calves, and potentially our herd sires available to utilize should a current or past purchase prove concerning. We prefer finding an agreeable substitute bull or reimbursing your money, but avoid issuing sale credit. No matter if you are interested or just curious about the offering, we would encourage you to at least take a look and see if the type of Hereford cattle we enjoy producing may work for you! One of our single biggest wishes is that more folks could see our cowherd, management, nutrition program and genetics so they could formulate their own independent opinion of what we do and why we do it. This partly initiated wanting to host our annual appreciation afternoon on Labor Day weekend. In saying this, we would be thrilled to have you for a visit prior to the sale. If we can be of any assistance or answer questions, we would be glad to hear from you. Remember we offer past buyers a 2% discount, and anyone purchasing two or more bulls will receive a 5% discount. It may not amount to a lot, but hopefully enough to pay for getting to the sale and a nice meal at some point. Also, we realize it has been a stressful fall, so if we can cooperate with you from a payment standpoint, don’t hesitate to propose an arrangement. Sincerely, Lance & Shari Leachman

NEW ENDEAVOURS Cowherd genomic collection project

The American Hereford Association has put forth an initiative to attract genotypes on more females within the Hereford breed in order to pace submissions on bulls. The intent is to create more accuracy of genetic evaluation within the breed, which is hampered by the prolificacy of cows relative to bulls. As such, testing of entire contemporaries of females within operations is being offered at a reduced price. We have committed to collecting samples on all 194 of our purebred Hereford females, including bred heifers and heifer calves. This is a substantial investment, but as with all sale bulls, we feel discovering the true genetic merit of our cattle makes our decisions more informed and provides more confidence and predictability that our cattle will attain the goals of those who may purchase them.

Bull residual feed intake project

The Canadian Hereford Association has made a diligent effort to document and promote a primary strength within the Hereford breed – feed efficiency. With our climate sometimes dictating substantial feed costs to maintain breeding cattle, let alone considering the requirement of finished cattle, efficiency can present a tremendous opportunity to increase profitability. RFI is the difference between an animal’s actual feed intake and its expected feed requirement for maintenance and growth. The ability of cattle to gain is tremendously important, but improving efficiency presents huge opportunities. Efficiency isn’t something that can be evaluated visually and is moderately heritable, so effective selection progress is possible. We respect the Hereford breeders that for several years already have incurred the expense and logistics to have Residual Feed Intake measured on their cattle via the Growsafe system. We have not contributed to this collection of information previously, but are excited to trial all the 2018-born bulls, including the sale cattle, on the Growsafe system at Lakeland College.

Annual exhibitions We annually try to exhibit cattle at Canadian Western Agribition. Though we show less frequently than many breeders, we believe it is an important responsibility to both promote the breed itself, and obviously our own operation. The timing is also convenient, a couple of weeks ahead of the sale. We have chosen to only exhibit bulls and manage the cattle sensibly from a weight accumulation and condition standpoint by feeding high-fibre rations and primarily oats for concentrate. We recognize that the phenotypic strengths that the bulls we elect to show in regard to structural integrity, performance, muscle, body dimension and masculinity are the same criteria that make them successful in commercial breeding pastures. Although a matter of opinion, the excessively heavy, fat and stale cattle, which tend to be less mobile, typically rank lower in classes and merit more negative feedback than most people expect when evaluated by capable judges.

The Power of Genomically-Enhanced EPDs The Canadian Hereford Association has embraced the use of genomics into their genetic evaluation by launching a first of its kind single step analysis that utilizes the marker effects of specific traits. Likewise, CHA is directly estimating accuracy values rather than approximating. The direct estimation of accuracy results in a more conservative value, but a more accurate value than previous methodologies. The CHA is producing the most reliable genetic evaluation that is supported by Whole Herd enrollment and genomics, which will give prospective buyers added confidence in purchasing young and unproven animals. Buying animals that have a genetic profile incorporated into their Expected Progeny Difference offers many advantages that allow for quicker breed and herd improvement. Below is a table showing the average increase in accuracy when buying a young animal with a Genomic Enhanced EPD versus an animal without a GE-EPD. Similarly, an effective progeny number increase is listed by the trait that shows how many progeny equate to a genomic enhancement of a young animal (e.g. yearling). That’s right, buying a young animal that has been genotyped is like having 2-17 progeny, depending on the trait. The proof gained on young, non-parent animals, through a genomic enhancement is valuable and greatly mitigates the risk and allows for more directed selection. CHA EPD TRAIT

We believe the best commercial cattle can easily be more impressive than any purebred, based on heterosis, so long as they combine the strongest of complimentary breeds. Most of the Hereford-sired heifers are by BIG-GULLY 102 HURLEY 271C, three-time CWA Reserve Champion, 2017 Farmfair Grand Champion and 2017 RBC Beef Supreme Challenge Top 10 Finalist. He is a bull we believe to be as correctly structured, docile, hairy, and big ribbed as we have raised. The red Simmental-sired calves are by WHEATLAND BULL 699D, a smooth fronted, muscular bull backed by elite udder quality and maternal capability. Most of the heifers are relatively early born to offer extra maturity. Several of the heifers could definitely be utilized as junior projects for kids as well, those will sell as single lots. Contact us for a better description of each heifer. Heifers have been fully vaccinated and will be delivered immediately after the sale.

2019 commercial Hereford female purchase opportunities We have finally expanded the herd in the past year and reached a comfortable carrying capacity of 180 bred females for the time being. Therefore, going forward, we are looking at options to annually merchandise two sets of purebred females in a commercial scenario beginning in the fall of 2019. Our plan is to maintain 180 brood cows and promote a youthful herd by incorporating 45 heifers annually for a 25% replacement rate. As such, we anticipate a group of open replacement females and a group of young-to-middle-aged cows to be available annually. We will sell these as COMMERCIAL FEMALES, without registration papers, so as to keep the influence of our registered females unique and maternally accessible through our sale bulls. Anyone interested in reaching an agreement to purchase these groups in an annual fashion is encouraged to contact us at 306-903-7299 for more details.

A late bull calf, ASSURANCE likely progressed over the summer as favourably as any and shouldn’t be overlooked. We really like the structural integrity, balance, pigment, big scrotal and rib shape this bull offer. He reads with an excellent multi-trait genetic script while being a moderate 87 lb. at birth. Moreover, his stout dam shared the same physical strengths of body length, youthfulness, rib shape, plus udder quality.

ATONEMENT was born a twin to a heifer and has developed well with a muscular look and extra stoutness of bone considering this. His sire, Golden Dan, left us incredible performance and extra scale in his progeny. ATONEMENT is long sided, uniform in his depth of body and hairy. His dam is a moderate framed, docile, 517U daughter that is consistently productive and still youthful appearing for a middle-aged cow.

CRIMSON TIDE has been our standout calf throughout the spring and summer. He is ideal for the times in regards to pigment, hair, rib shape, muscle, balance, scrotal and structural integrity. Moreover, his 2011-sired dam is elite in terms of center body dimension, udder quality and milk. Sum this with his genetic predictions for calving ease, birth weight, milk and maternal calving ease, amd we believe this calf has great versatility and tremendous maternal utility. RESOLVE is a calf we love in terms of structural integrity, conformation, balance and the design of his neck/shoulder junction. He is level, big ribbed and red necked and legged. What makes this bull just as exciting is that we have a full sister a year older that we consider our best bred heifer; her mass, structure and balance is exciting for a Hereford. RESOLVE is the type that as time goes on his structure and quality will allow him to become even more impressive as he continues developing maturity and masculinity.

DISRUPTION is a stout hipped, muscular son of our Miles 5001 bull and is out of a first-calf heifer who is sired by the AI sire Old School 301. The Old School progeny had very conservative birth weights and his initial daughters have correct udders and apparently strong milk ability, including DISRUPTION’s dam. This bull is more conservative in scale, but is correct, big topped, stout and attractively designed. Moreover, maternal ability should be exceptional considering productivity and udder quality on both sides of pedigree. paternal granddam

A short marked, goggled-eyed son of the 6060 bull that we utilized on heifers post AI. This bull could really shine as a heifer-oriented breeding option since he is smooth shouldered, long sided and generally smoother designed. His dam has gave us low-to-moderate birth weight on her initial trio of calves. What may be most beneficial is the ability to keep replacements as his dam is elite uddered, as are paternal grandparents Miles McKee and the Trust 4212 cow.

You sometimes did things that perplexed us, but mostly you amazed us with your instinct and ability to protect your cows from wildlife. We know you will always be watching over us from your favorite place – the gully. You will never be forgotten.

Online Bidding

SALE START The sale will begin at 4:30 p.m. MST on December 13. Videos of the sale lots can be viewed at www.biggullyfarm.com. HOW TO PARTICIPATE In order to participate in the auction online you will need to pre-register and obtain a buyer number. Go to the LiveAuctions. tv website, www.liveauctions.tv, and select Big Gully Farm Bull Sale (you may need to create a user name and password if this is your first time). After logging in select the link that says, “register for a buyer number.” This form requires you to fill out your bank’s name, city, state, phone number and a contact. You may register to bid after bidding has opened but please remember that authorization to bid is not instantaneous. HOW THE AUCTION WORKS Once you have a username and have received a buyer number then you are ready to bid. You will see a screen that is unique to your user ID. There will be a list containing the sale lots. If you click on a lot, the video clip or photo will be displayed to the right. The next bid, current price, proxy bid, and manual bid buttons will be displayed below the video area. This page will react to your bids by stating, “you are in” or “you are out.” No one else will be able to see your bid – that data is not accessible to the public. Each time you login, the auction screen will display your personal bidding information. Your auction screen is unique and private displaying your activity to only you. Remember that you must have the lot that you are bidding on selected. This is where it tells you if you are in or out. It is here where you can also see your proxy (automatic) bid settings as applicable.

WHAT IS A PROXY BID? With a proxy bid you can enter your maximum bid and then sit back and watch. When you enter a proxy bid amount the LiveAuctions system automatically bids on your behalf up to your maximum bid. If the lot closes out for less than your maximum, that’s all you’ll have to pay. This means that you don’t have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed. This makes it more convenient and less time consuming. It can also greatly assists those breeders that can’t be near a computer or are busy with other duties at the time of the final bidding. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller. Even though you can see this amount on your screen, no one else can. The LiveAuctions system compares your bid to those of the other registered bidders and the system automatically places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position. The system will bid only up to your maximum amount as necessary to maintain you as the high bidder. If another bidder has a higher maximum, you’ll be outbid and the system will tell you that “YOU’RE OUT.” But, if no other bidder has a higher maximum you win the final bid.
