Welcome
Welcome to Big Gully’s Online/On-Farm Bull & Heifer Sale! We invite you to join us in person or online to partake in our 3rd on-farm event. First, we must express our gratitude to each of you that have supported us in any form; we will continue to work toward meeting your expectations! In lieu of summarizing the cattle, we believe the footnotes provide an honest, accurate description of the livestock and their potential capabilities upon which you can formulate your own opinions. The live, video sale at Big Gully Farm will commence at 5:30 p.m. MST on Thursday, December 8. Cattle will be available for appraisal all afternoon and any time prior. Supper and drinks will be served at 4:30 p.m. As usual, online bidding via LiveAuctions.tv will be available beginning on December 5 and conclude simultaneously with the live sale on farm. Please arrive early to view the cattle, while still daylight, and to enjoy the pre-sale holiday social! We continually look for ways to advance and improve our herd and profitability via genetics, nutrition, reproduction, herd health, etc. Our principal herd improvement strategy is investing in bulls or semen from seedstock providers who derive their living raising cattle. Having quality cattle is critical, but just as importantly operations we source bulls from must display integrity, humility, professionalism, consistency and direction. We have great respect for such operations and believe these characteristics ensure a higher probability that the cattle will work for not only us, but also for anyone who might purchase through this sale. Our goal isn’t to sell purebred, commercial, show, ranch ready, ranch raised or any other type of Herefords – only those that are profitable and high quality. Quality is our focus since that will influence the perception people hold of us, our cattle and our management. Since we are proud to depend on progressive commercial cattlemen as our bull purchasers – the livestock will sell for what they deem them worth. We are a relatively small provider of bulls within the breed and are trying to foster close relationships with our customer base. Each customer is valuable to us, regardless of how frequently they have purchased or how much they have invested in our program. Shari and I are never pleased with the current state of this operation and always believe we can and will do better. Without this attitude, complacency would set in and progress would cease. Cattle are our sole passion and this operation functions within its limitations depending on our own labor and some custom operators. Again, we have slightly and responsibly increased the number of bulls to appease a broader group of potential customers, while simultaneously advancing the quality – hopefully ensuring strong value in the livestock.
It is our intent to be more critical and honest in the evaluation of this breed and our herd than most any potential customer could be. As such, increasing muscle, enhancing udder quality, moderating frame, bolstering center body dimension, moderating birth weight, advancing carcass merit, increasing pigmentation and optimizing performance are criteria we will proceed toward. Should you value these traits and the Hereford pillars of superior docility, structural integrity, hardiness and efficiency – our cattle may interest you. Furthermore, if you find your cowherd becoming very homogenous in terms of breed influence and want to capitalize on heterosis/hybrid vigour – we would love to offer a complimentary breed to achieve that.

As proponents of expected progeny differences (EPDs), we have put considerable selection pressure on these for generations. Obviously EPDs are a tool; therefore we utilize them and feel competitive from a data standpoint. All purebred sale cattle have been sire verified and possess Genomically Enhanced EPDs (GE-EPDs). For those unfamiliar, this testing allows a higher degree of accuracy in knowing the true genetic merit of the cattle at a younger age for a variety of traits – essentially a risk-management plan. If you are unfamiliar with either of these tools or their utility, we would gladly discuss them prior to the sale. Every year we submit calving ease, weight (birth, weaning, yearling, mature cow), scrotal and ultrasound carcass measures (ribeye, back fat, intramuscular fat) on each eligible animal to the Canadian Hereford Association. The
bottom line is we believe selection applied to these measured traits will improve the profitability of the progeny born to bulls we raise in an array of production scenarios. All females will be delivered immediately after the sale. FREE OF CHARGE, ALL BULLS will be developed here at the farm through spring – double vaccinated with Fusogard, ultrasounded for carcass merit by Shari, evaluated for breeding soundness, and delivered by June 1, 2017 or when best suits the purchaser. We know that unforeseen circumstances potentially arise with semen testing and breeding. As a precaution, the bulls have been scrotal measured to assure satisfactory development. However, if a concern after spring breeding soundness evaluations or during actual breeding arises-our intent is to be honest and straight forward with you and we expect the same in terms of finding a satisfactory resolution. Rest assured, we have spare 2-year olds, a large assortment of yearlings and potentially herd bulls that could be utilized should a current or past purchase prove concerning. In closing, we would be proud to host you at this pre-Christmas event. Please join us for supper and drinks between viewing the cattle and the sale itself. No matter if you are interested or just curious about the offering, we would encourage you to at least take a look and see if the type of Hereford cattle we strive to produce may work for you! If we can be of any assistance prior to the sale, please don’t hesitate to contact us. Sincerely, Lance & Shari Leachman Frances Leachman

BENCH has always separated himself with regard to eye appeal-due to his dark color, ideal pigment and attractively designed front one-third. BENCH is skeletally extended, sound footed and straight in his lines. The Great Divide sons consistently inherit performance, muscle shape and center body dimension. Moreover, his dam is among the most impressive cows in the herd with regard to power, center body dimension and udder quality. BENCH should have the capability to add performance to a set of calves, yet offer maternal quality in replacement daughters. Ranks in the top 1% for REA; 10% for WW; 20% for YW.

POLO is the lone Vendetta offspring in the offering. The Vendetta progeny have proven to be born easily and grow quickly, while being long sided and attractive. In production, the females milk well with strong udder quality. POLO has curve-bending performance arriving at 73 lbs and being in the top three in weaning/yearling weight among his calf crop. He is a big, long sided bull that is correct, dark colored and short marked. His first-calf mother is moderate in frame and tight in her udder suspension. TWISTED X has developed into the biggest ribbed and stoutest hipped of the 2-year-olds. His moderation, powerful rib curvature and dimension of muscle define the characteristics we hope to establish in our herd. TWISTED X should have the capability to sire progeny with superior muscle and the ability to easily maintain body condition due to rib shape, just as his mature 47R-sired dam continues to do. A maternal half brother was purchased by Travis Cooke and a maternal half sister by Misty Valley Farm. He ranks in the top 20% for WW, YW.

COACH is a big, stout, heavy-structured bull that should transmit power and performance to a progeny group. Moreover, he is thick ended, docile and conservatively marked. Maternally, his dam is moderate framed, correct uddered and possesses as much center rib curvature and depth as any cow in our herd. A heifer’s first calf, WALL STREET is a complete sire prospect that combines structural soundness, muscle shape and balance in a moderately-framed build. From a birth weight standpoint, he offers flexibility to be used in different breeding scenarios. We calved out the first Stockman daughters this past spring and their udder correctness/milk flow will be major assets to our breeding program along with the pigment, dimension of rib and the muscle shape they retain in a conservative framed package. Another heifer’s first calf, BLACKHAWK offers potential utilization on a combination of cows and heifers considering his conservative frame, actual birth weight and genetic predictions. Maternally, he combines Stockman and our foundation sire 47R to potentially produce replacements with a combination of center body shape, muscle and moderation of frame. With much of this catalogue dedicated to bulls, we wanted to inform you on developments within the cowherd as well. We have withdrawn from showing females and only sell a small group of heifers in an attempt to keep our females unique, maintain contemporary group size and evaluate their initial production ourselves. We believe this will ensure our highest quality maternal factories remain in-herd to continuously produce the strongest possible set of bulls for this sale. We intend to extend our inclusion of polled bulls in breeding scenarios to accommodate more marketing flexibility, including a more prominent group for the 2017 sale. This summer we culled/sold 33 females to introduce the largest, strongest group of bred heifers we have had. We believe strongly in maintaining a youthful, productive cowherd that should genetically advance itself rapidly-therefore the average age of females to calve in the winter of 2017 will be 4.17 years. Our few Angus and Angus-influenced females will continue to serve as a quality benchmark, while being utilized as ET recipients or for the production of F-1’s. The cowherd has reached the point where udder quality, foot structure, muscle, body dimension and docility are correct-but will certainly continue to be improved upon. All replacement heifers are synchronized and AI bred, while 70% of the cows are AI bred on natural cycles-the majority to our own walking sires. The embryo transfer component of our program continues to be expanded to propagate our elite maternal genetics. Although chances to publicly view the females may be less apparent, we encourage you to stop by anytime or participate in our Labor Day weekend Appreciation Event to see what we have been working toward!

Lot 14
EATON reads with multi-trait genetic excellence while combining a pair of the breed’s most complete and current sires in Catapult and Stockman. He is one of the first Catapult descendants to sell in Canada – a bull whose progeny have dominated the National Western Stock Show and whose body dimension and muscle have rarely been seen in the breed. His sire Old School was purchased by Genex, and couples power, balance and maternal excellence. EATON is a red eyed, big ribbed, sound structured, square hipped calf that is correct in his testicular development. His moderate framed, first-calf mother is exceptional uddered and attractively designed. Ranks in the top 5% for REA; 10% for CE, MILK, TM; 20% for CE, WW, MCE.

Visually, ALBANY is complete in regards to muscle, soundness, center body dimension and balance. He is wide based, open in his rib shape and reads bold and square down his top. Plus, he is short marked and correct in his testicular development. Genetically, he should transmit superior growth and muscle to a set of calves. His dam is a short marked, sound, smooth fronted Monument 8151 daughter. We are excited to calve out his full sib bred heifer this spring, considering her mass and look. Ranks in the top 10% for REA, 20% for WW, YW.

HUDSON is a complete young sire prospect that reads favorably across his genetic predictions and physically supports the data with superior muscle and growth. He is long sided, correct in his skeleton and attractively designed. Considering his actual birth weight and genetic predictions, HUDSON could offer mating versatility on cows or heifers. His dam is a powerful, conservatively marked, correct uddered daughter of Monument 8151. A full brother sold to Rick Shaver in our initial on-farm sale. Ranks in the top 10% for REA.

PARKER initiates a trio of bulls from our first calf crop by Golden Dan 4061, who is among the highest-performing bulls to come out of the Colyer Herefords program. Golden Dan 4061 should inject a shot more frame, bone and performance into our program while maintaining maternal excellence. PARKER clearly inherited these characteristics with his length of body, WPDA and scale, yet he maintains structural integrity, balance and pigmentation. His maturity pattern should make him suited for use on cows, especially considering the growth he should supply. His young dam has been productive and is similarly red eyed, short marked and correct in her design. Ranks in the top 5% for WW, YW, TM; 10% for MILK, REA.

POCATELLO is the youngest calf in the sale, but doesn’t sacrifice in quality. He is a red eyed, red legged son of the performance-driven Golden Dan 4061. POCATELLO is among the boldest and deepest in his rib shape, wide pinned and big topped. Beyond that, he is heavy boned, straight lined and attractive from the profile. His dam is among the most correct uddered cows in the herd, while being moderate framed and retaining his same rib shape and center body dimension. We feel this calf has unique attributes from a volume and shape standpoint that are only enhanced with his maternal strength. Ranks in the top 5% for WW; 10% for YW, REA; 15% for TM.

The Golden Dan 4061 calves were consistently our heaviest at weaning, among both sexes, and should transmit desirable pay weight to a set of progeny. WEISER is a potential lock for a calving ease bull to utilize on heifers while adding maternal value to a group of daughters. Both sides of his pedigree suggest low birth weight capability, coupled with his actual measure of 61 lbs and genetic predictions. His paternal half sisters by 2011 were first calved out this spring and are productive due to milk flow, udder construction and weaning a high percentage of their body weight. BOULDER is a very useful calf, not to overlook due to extra chrome. He is the second heaviest bull calf with excellent length, body depth, pin spread and scrotal development. His genetic profile reads on the better side of breed average for most traits. Maternally, his pedigree contains udder quality, eye appeal and correctness. The 53T cow served as a donor in our herd and was chosen to do so based on her ability to produce modest sized calves that grew quickly and developed stoutness and rib shape. We will be hosting the live video sale on December 8 at Big Gully Farm, located 12 miles north of Maidstone, SK. Videos of the sale lots can be viewed at www.biggullyfarm.com. H O W T O PA R T I C I PAT E In order to participate in the online auction you will need to pre-register and obtain a buyer number. Go to the LiveAuctions website, www.liveauctions.tv, and select Big Gully’s Online/On-Farm Bull & Heifer Sale (you may need to create a user name and password if this is your first time). After logging in select the link that says, “register for a buyer number.” This form requires you to fill out your bank’s name, city, state, phone number and a contact. You may register to bid after bidding has opened but please remember that authorization to bid is not instantaneous. H O W T H E A U C T I O N W O R K S Once you have a username and have received a buyer number then you are ready to bid. You will see a screen that is unique to your user ID. There will be a list containing the sale lots. If
you click on a lot, the video clip or photo will be displayed to the right. The next bid, current price, proxy bid, and manual bid buttons will be displayed below the video area. This page will react to your bids by stating, “you are in” or “you are out.” No one else will be able to see your bid – that data is not accessible to the public. Each time you login, the auction screen will display your personal bidding information. Your auction screen is unique and private displaying your activity to only you. Remember that you must have the lot that you are bidding on selected. This is where it tells you if you are in or out. It is here where you can also see your proxy (automatic) bid settings as applicable. W H AT I S A P R OX Y B I D ? With a proxy bid you can enter your maximum bid and then sit back and watch. When you enter a proxy bid amount the LiveAuctions system automatically bids on your behalf up to your maximum bid. If the lot closes out for less than your maximum, that’s all you’ll have to pay. This means that you don’t have to keep coming back to re-bid every time another bid is placed. This makes it more convenient and less time consuming. It can also greatly assists
those breeders that can’t be near a computer or are busy with other duties at the time of the final bidding. Your maximum amount is kept confidential from other bidders and the seller. Even though you can see this amount on your screen, no one else can. The LiveAuctions system compares your bid to those of the other registered bidders and the system automatically places bids on your behalf, using only as much of your bid as is necessary to maintain your high bid position. The system will bid only up to your maximum amount as necessary to maintain you as the high bidder. If another bidder has a higher maximum, you’ll be outbid and the system will tell you that “YOU’RE OUT.” But, if no other bidder has a higher maximum you win the final bid. Eligibility requirements for consideration of this award include: 1) Young beef cattle enthusiasts aged 16-25 on Jan. 1 of the calendar year. 2) A 1-2 page paper (with contact details) describing: • The experience they wish to initiate • The likely timeline of experience • Estimated expenses related to experience • Their long term plans or goals for involvement with beef cattle • The perceived benefit the experience will offer toward those future plans/goals 3) The names and phone numbers of two character references From applications received, the selection committee will review all submissions and possibly contact references before completing a short list. At that point, personal telephone interviews will be conducted with the short list finalists before coming to a conclusion and choosing two recipients.
