Welcome
We welcome you to our ranch on Monday, March 4 for our much anticipated bull sale. As we prepare for the upcoming sale, we are battling the extreme cold conditions. Although the lack of moisture in many areas this summer has been challenging, I’m sure we can all agree that the cattle business is one that is sure humbling and rewarding, one we wouldn’t trade to be apart of. Our commitment to the cattle industry is unwavering. Our goal is to raise cowboy bulls; low maintenance, easy to handle and make every dollar count for the commercial and purebred cattleman. We strive to keep to the basics, of which starts with structural soundness. Dams must have good feet and udders while being easy keepers on a high forage diet. It’s important they raise a calf every year as it’s not profitable to sell an open cow in the spring. When we are selecting donor dams, we do extensive research on the pedigrees ensuring their dams and granddams have a proven track record of producing elite progeny. On the sire side, we have not been afraid to go back and use older herd sires that have daughters in production raising calves that are coming to the front of female sales or making herd bull prospects. We also believe strongly in using our own genetics; breeding homegrown bulls rising to the top of the pen thriving in our environment and checking off all the boxes is a winner in our books. We don’t chase fads but instead select cattle that work for us. Harvie Crest Cattle is a family run business, we have built up our cow numbers over the last 4 years giving us the opportunity to calve out over 230+ cows this spring. This cow herd is our sole source of income therefore the cattle have to be functional and work for us. Kerrie & I are blessed that our three children have the same passion for the ranching lifestyle. It is not uncommon for our family to be processing cattle on weekends or working together in the barn getting ready for junior shows. Our children are still young and are around the cattle every day, making it very important that we select for disposition. Our boys Chick and Tel will help bring cattle up to the chute, Kerrie and daughter Gentry run the HerdTrax program inputting data along with mixing vaccines. Our kids are super keen, they have a passion for cattle and are working on taking over the show barn this summer. What a great summer we had travelling to numerous junior cattle shows. Chick finally broke out of the Pee Wee division winning Grand Champion Junior Aggregate at Summer Synergy earning a Calgary Stampede scholarship (Chick was high point individual with over 300 kids competing) as well as Grand Champion Junior Aggregate at the Alberta Junior Simmental Show. Gentry turned 8 years old and had another memorable year showing her Red Angus cow “Baby Shark” (Red Six Mile Frado 344J) winning many champions and ending the year on a high with her pair winning Grand Champion Red Angus Female at Canadian Western Agribition. Tel is 6 years old and while still too young to participate as a junior, he

is super keen helping out his older brother and sister. It is not uncommon to see Tel tie up a newborn calf as soon as the mother leaves the pen or help wrestle calves when we’re processing and weighing them. Our success comes from surrounding ourselves with a great team, starting off with our nutritionist Georges Uebelhardt, owner of Heartland Feeds. Georges gathers our feed samples and balances our feed rations based on feed analysis to ensure we reach our ADG targets. Dr. Waylon Wise with C.C.H.M.S. performs our veterinarian work and also works closely with us to analyze the data through HerdTrax to ensure we hit our benchmarks that we set for our herd as well as recognize the elite cows that may have gone unnoticed. The marketing team of Colonel Ryan Dorran and Bohrson Marketing help promote the brand and analyze cattle for us if we are unable to attend a sale. The team at Bow Valley Genetics has been doing our embryo work over the past few years implanting over 130 embryos this past year, and working with us to build a pregnant recipient program, custom ET calf raising and flushing our elite donors into our recipient cows. We also have friends and neighbors that don’t mind lending a helping hand and we are so truly grateful for the community we live in. We are fortunate that our parents are so supportive and always willing to lend an extra hand, whether it be looking after “their Grandchildren” or do any extra jobs that Kerrie and I don’t seem to get completed. Kerrie’s Uncle Bob Bennett has been our go to guy since we started Harvie Crest Cattle; Bob has been here to help build this place from the ground up, literally, he has built many miles of fence. He is an individual that we can’t express enough gratitude to for all that he has done for us. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Monday March 4th at our ranch. We will be serving steak lunch at noon with the sale to follow at 1:00 pm in our heated barn. To us, this is our branding day that we worked towards for the last 365 days. We are proud to show you what we’ve produced. This year’s bull pen is deep and we’re confident there’s a bull that will work for you. We invite you to come tour the bull pen prior to the sale and have a look at the cow herd, giving you a great chance to see their mothers, sisters and daughters to the herd sires in production. If we can help you in any way, please feel free to reach out to Kerrie, myself or the Bohrson Marketing team to help select your next herdsire. Yours truly,
Scott Harvie

WELCOME FROM BOHRSON MARKETING The Harvie Crest Bull Sale will be a great opportunity to acquire your next herd bull from a hard-working, driven and dedicated family to the Simmental industry. Scott, Kerrie, Chick, Gentry and Tel are passionate about raising top quality cattle and aren’t afraid to go the extra mile for their customers. They have built the Harvie Crest brand from the ground up and have done a tremendous job in designing a program to suit their customers needs. The bulls on offer are certainly the top end that they’ve ever offered with an ideal cross section of power and calving ease bulls. This set of Simmental bulls are certainly designed for longevity and profitability for their customers with many of them being ET calves from donor females and also out of top cornerstone cattle in their program. The cows behind them are sound in their design with profitability on their mind with strength in numbers as they run a large program and are only selling the best of the best. It’s a family business here and even though Scott and Kerrie work tirelessly to build their program, their young kids certainly pull more than their weight with the workload and are some of the keenest and most talented up and coming cattlemen in the industry. We encourage you to reach out to the Harvie’s to view the bulls and cowherd prior to sale day as they’d be excited to show you the strengths in their program. If you can’t make it sale day, feel free to visit with the Harvie crew or any of the BMS Staff on hand to visit about the bulls as you can be assured that we want to recommend the best bull possible for your program. Please join us on the first Monday in March at the beautiful Harvie Crest Sale Barn for a strong set of bulls and great hospitality.
WELCOME FROM DR. WAYLON WISE
Best regards, The Bohrson Marketing Team
Welcome from Dr. Waylon Wise Cow/Calf Health and Management Solutions (CCHMS) works together with Harvie Crest Cattle to manage their entire herd through an integrated and comprehensive health, nutrition and production management program. Detailed data is collected on each individual animal at all key health and production points and is kept in a secure web-enabled database called Telus Animal Record Management (formerly Herdtrax). We continually monitor and audit this data and use this information to improve the health, welfare, performance and efficiency of the entire operation. BREEDING SOUNDNESS EXAMINATION Each bull has passed an extensive Bull Soundness Examination which includes soundness of structure, palpation of testis and internal sex glands, scrotal circumference, examination of the penis as well as verifying sufficient sperm motility and morphology. Bulls are considered to be Satisfactory if they have already passed the above criteria at sale time. [Those bulls that are deemed as “Prepubertal or Decision Deferred” have either not reached puberty or are stressed, but show sufficient signs of improvement and likely will be satisfactory as soon as the days get longer, the grass get greener and bulls can be bulls. There is considerable selection pressure placed on young bulls and 30% of all bulls will fail to produce an adequate sample at 12 mo., 15% at 14 mo., 5% at 16 mo. None of the bulls will be delivered until they are Satisfactory on a Bull Soundness Exam] CCHMS is proud to work with Harvie Crest Cattle and if there are any questions, please contact me and I can always find the time to talk about cows, bulls and the Canadian cattle industry. Congrats on another outstanding pen of bulls!

FEEDING/BULL DEVELOPMENT
We work closely with Georges Uebelhardt of Heartland Feeds to feed a balanced TMR ration to ensure bulls are properly developed. Our goal is not to have the heaviest bulls in the spring, but rather we aim for a 3 to 3.5lbs average daily gain to ensure bulls are not burnt out and will handle a breeding season and continue to grow and develop.

MAKING THE BULL SALE

AT BIRTH - all bull calves must have calved easily and exhibit high vigour by getting up and nurse unassisted. If any bull or heifer calf receives colostrum, they are culled from our program. Dam must have a problem free udder, good feet and be easy to handle. Any cows that do not check all three boxes then go into the recip program. SPRING PROCESSING - calves must have remained healthy and not have been treated for pneumonia, are structurally sound, show a positive growth curve and finally not show any disposition issues. FALL WEANING - all calves must have adequate growth, display traits we want to replicate in the commercial industry and again cull for disposition. WINTER - bulls must perform to our standards and pass a semen evaluation test.

The Brooke cow family is becoming one of the elite cow families in the Simmental breed. We are glad we purchased one of them. Brooke 1H was our pick out of the Friday Night Lights sale; she is deep bodied with a beautiful udder. The flush to our herdsire Buckshot 33H was a knockout with both heifers and bull calves being at the forefront of the replacement pen. Buck Up 3087L is one of the very best black calves we’ve raised and has been Chick’s pick of bulls all summer. He’s a stud, big bodied, soft made and gets out and moves. Although his flush brothers didn’t get Chick’s TLC, they share many of the same characteristics and will produce some standout heifers and steers. BW 90

When selecting herd bulls, we always look back at the foundation, specifically look for a proven dam. Cream Soda 019 has sure proven herself in her offspring on offer and we’re sure she’ll be a great one! 019’s first natural bull calf was used in our heifer pen and then sold to Troy Hagel. Her two ET heifer calves knocked it out of the park, both being selected for Bohrson’s Family Matters Sale, selling choice, Indian River purchased the one heifer and we are happy to be able to keep the other back to build our program further. Onto the business of these 4 brothers, the quality and depth speak for itself. We believe these brothers will produce easy doing females with flawless udders and great feet, everything we were hoping on accomplishing with SimAngus females. The steers should be ground pounding performance cattle that’ll be money in the bank. BW 100

HEIFER BULL ALERT!! This might just be one of the coolest bulls in the sale. While we have not had as many Anarchy sons as we’ve wanted, we sure got the daughters to say that’s not a bad thing, they have turned out to be great females with awesome udders. Son of a Gun has such presence and will work great on heifers. We are in the 3rd year of using Anarchy in the heifer pen and he has been great to calve without giving up any performance. We purchased Son of Anarchy 144H from Mader Ranches for $50,000 and we are so happy with how he’s worked on heifers. We think Son of A Gun 3044L might be better than his Dad! BW 80

Here’s a cool set of 4 maternal brothers. These bulls are neat breeding pieces that could go many different directions. The 3 Bond sons are designed for the heifer pen; nice headed and smooth shouldered. Opal’s natural calf, HC 3097L is a powerful Hitch son. When we found Opal at the Checkers sale, we initially had no intention of buying a female, however, when we found Opal we knew we had to try and own her. Opal 005H has exceptional foot structure and an udder that is second to none. She is a bigger framed cow with a ton of hair. The check marks keep getting ticked off on this great donor, we are really looking forward to seeing the impact she’ll have on the herd. These brothers will be an impactful breeding tool where ever they end up and will add a lot of value to any progressive cow herd.

Maternal, Maternal, Maternal. If you are wanting to make great females, these four herd sires are worth a look. Mackfrid is a power red donor we added to the line up and she has blown us away. Mackfrid is a tank and a real stand out in our herd. At a distance, you’ll be able to pick her out but she only gets better once up close. Analyzing Mackfrid 27F, you’ll appreciate her gorgeous level udder and big sound feet. We have 16 progeny on the ground and both heifers and bulls are all at the top end of the pen. SVS Bond is a bull we added for his great spread in numbers; he has some calving ease yet does not sacrifice growth and out of one of the very best Cream Soda cows. When a bull like Buckshot leaves a stamp like he did, you only need one footnote. These bulls are going to add milk to a cow herd without sacrificing udder quality. Buckshot is one of the very best footed Simmental bulls and he has passed that on to his sons and daughters so expect a big time foot improvers. These bulls will sire steer calves that you’ll want retain ownership on and feed out and enjoy the full ride of owning cattle that work. BW 98

One of the hardest things to breed into cattle but also the most profitable is LONGEVITY and 3074L has it in spades. 3074L is backed by some of the oldest cows in production here at the ranch. 3074 displays so many Simmental characteristics that make the breed great; he’s long, deep sided and so easy doing. The more we study this bull, the more we like him and he’ll be worth a second look sale day!! BW 101

We purchased 3091L’s dam in the Sim Power Female sale as a bred heifer. She’s done everything we ask for in a 2 year old female; dropped a beautiful udder, held her condition and bred back again right away. 3091L is a solid herd sire with good feet and hair. He certainly provides a nice balance of calving ease and growth. BW 90

HEIFER BULL Alert! Reflection 3037L descends from one of the best cow family’s here at our ranch, Dakota Rose. This is the same cow family that produced our FarmFair Supreme Champion Harvie Red Summit 54B. Dakota Rose 127H is a family favorite as she has eye appeal, easy doing, beautiful udder, one that you’d want your herdsire mother to have. Reflection has a very moderate birth weight of 83 lbs putting him in the top 10% for CE and top 4% for BW. This heifer bull is flawless in his design as he’s smooth fronted, yet has enough rib, muscle shape and volume that you won’t sacrifice growth. This bull would not be leaving our place if our heifer pen wasn’t so closely related. Don’t miss out on a heifer bull with so much potential. BW 83

A personal favorite, this bull checks off so many boxes: a phenomenal set of EPD’s where his raw data matches the EPD profile. With his low birthweight, he could be tried in the heifer pen. And wow, he weaned off an impressive weight of 910lbs, the highest of our bull calf pen. If you’re asking how it could get any better, then be sure to check out his full sister as she’s a stunning 2 year old with an udder to die for. 3056L is the real deal and worth a serious look if you want to take your herd to the next level. 3050L comes straight out of one of our very best cows here on the ranch, Black Angel 7F. She has been a consistent cow for us, producing our top calves every year. Black Angel 7F’s first calf was Harviecrest Buckshot 33H, who is proving to be a great breeding bull; from moderate calving, high growth and daughters with exceptional udders, Buckshot 33H is now walking the pastures at BS Ranch for Bob and Shauna Harakal and we will continue to use him in our breeding program. 3050L’s dam also produced a daughter, who was sold in Friday Night Lights to Percyview and last year’s bull calf was selected by Three Hills Colony. We look forward to seeing the impact he’ll make on their operation. 3050L has been one of our favorites all summer; he’s dark cherry, hairy and full of red meat. If family tradition continues, expect 3050L to add milk and udder quality to his daughters HARVIECREST BUCKSHOT 33H with a touch of performance. MATERNAL SIB TO LOT 30 BW 104

A super solid bull calf that exemplifies what Red Summit can do on a first calf heifer. 3010L is a really cowboy type of bull; fault free, easy doing, great haired and quiet. We’d be happy to have a whole pen of this type. Eileen 1J was a great 2 year old who weaned off over 60% of her body weight and bred back early. If every commercial heifer did this, there is money to be made on those type of cattle. BW 95

“Maternal” and “carcass” would be the two words we’d use to describe 2059K. On the top side is Great Plains, an angus bull that is a big time cacrass bull launching himself into the top 10% for weaning, yearling and marbling. Great Plains’ dam was one of Belvin’s oldest and consistent donor cows having a perfect udder and solid feet. On the bottom side, his dam hails from the Dakota Rose family who has become one of the most proven Simmental families here. BW 101

This two year old comes from a proven angus female we purchased from Kyle Boss some years back. She was a big, powerful angus female that had a gorgeous udder, the kind we really wanted to incorporate into our commercial herd. We get asked if we have any 2-year-old bulls for sale therefore we felt this was a great way to offer some of our very best, by using them in our herd first. We are really looking forward to seeing the females he’ll make. BW 105

What an incredibly unique individual Jaws 3080L is. This Red Angus bull ties so many things together in a big-time package. Every great herd bull descends from a great dam and his mother Frado 344J is just that. This pair just came off a big win, being crowned Grand Champion Red Angus Female at Canadian Western Agribition and making the top 10 in the Supreme. She is one the very best Red Angus females we’ve come across. Frado 344J is dark cherry red, flawless udder, perfect feet (never been trimmed) and the best disposition. When you analyze Jaws’ EPD profile, he is; Top 3% for CE, top 10% in BW, WW and YW and the top 1% for MCE. This matches his actual raw data of 67 lbs birth weight and weaning off at 935 lbs. Our family has been fortunate to raise some pretty impactful herdsires in many breeds; Harvie Red Summit 54B (Simmental), Harvie Redemption 36L (Charolais) and Harvie Ladies Man 4L (Hereford). We believe Jaws 3080L has the pedigree and structural presence to be a leading herd bull in the Red Angus breed. BW 67

Harvie Crest Cattle has recently partnered with Heartland Feeds to become a KEY-LIX dealer in Central Alberta. We are excited about this opportunity we’ve been given and look forward to serving the agriculture community with a product line we believe in. The Key-Lix mineral tubs have been used on our ranch over the past 2 and a half years and we’ve been extremely happy with the results. These chelated mineral tubs are very versatile; we’ve been placing KEY-LIX mineral tubs in our calf sheds and in return have really increased our herd health on the calves. When we send the calves to pasture in the spring, they no longer are dry haired and stale looking. Last year when we were short on feed, we supplemented our feed rations with mineral tubs to help with the protein that was absent in the cow diet. We stand 100% behind this product and will be happy to answer any questions to see how KEY-LIX will benefit your operation. Call Scott or Kerrie to book today!
