Welcome to Hillsdown Gelbvieh’s complete dispersal sale. Even a few short months ago, we did not think that we would be sitting down this evening to write this opening sentence welcoming everyone to our dispersal sale. Life can sure deal you some unexpected cards. With Wanda’s health situation and Eddie’s off farm business, we have decided that it would be impossible to continue producing top quality Gelbvieh seedstock without sacrificing one for the other. We got our start in the Gelbvieh breed with a cow calf pair Wanda’s dad purchased from Keriness Cattle Company, and a bull we purchased from Rolling Ridge Gelbvieh in 2004. The following year we purchased 5 cows at the Twin Star herd dispersal. These 6 cows form the foundation of our herd. A small number of select purchases at later dates complete the herd that you see today. By using top A.I. sires, selecting their best sons for herd sires, and their best daughters as replacement females, the next 10 years were spent building a topnotch maternal herd. As everyone knows, you can’t produce top quality seedstock without that corner stone in place. Our vision was to produce soft muscled, easy fleshing, highly maternal and fertile cattle. That we were successful in this is evident in the number of years the Hillsdown name appeared in the Canadian Gelbvieh top 10 for number of dams of Merit and dams of Distinction. In 2012 we selected 4 bull calves from that year’s calf crop to develop and promote for sale as yearling bulls. By 2020 that number had increased to 22 bulls, for sale by private treaty. The most important criteria in selecting a bull for breeding purposes was that if we would not use it on our own cows, we would not sell it to anyone either. This approach served us very well, and the number of repeat bull buyers over the years is testament to this. We were also able to attract new customers, including a number of breeders trying Gelbvieh for the first time. In 2014 and 2015 we went to watch the Gelbvieh show at Farmfair International. This is probably when the idea to start showing our cattle was born. It’s one thing to sit in the stands and think you have cattle at home at least as good or better than what’s brought into the ring, but bringing your cattle to town and put them in the ring with what is the top of the breed is a different kettle of fish altogether. We soon realized there was a lot to learn and improve upon. But we can’t say enough about the help we received from the Gelbvieh breeders on our first outing. Without exception, everyone in the Gelbvieh barn in Edmonton in 2016 went out of their way to either physically help us with things, or give useful information. Whether it was Aaron Birch and Joe Barnett lending us a fan, Scott Severtson supplying us with Ceasars during moving in, or Darren Dunford getting us in touch with a fitter. We have met and befriended so many people over the years, it defies trying to mention all of you. Please know, we have not forgotten your kindness and acceptance. In the meantime, we purchased a herdsire that we had been looking for about 3 years. DL Jen-Ty Dynamite 18D checked all the boxes for us to advance our herd to the next level. We had to dig deep to acquire him, but he came with a nice jacket and a hat. Luckily both garments were Eddie’s size, so Dynamite wasn’t forced to wear them. Wanda spotted Dynamite at the 2016 bull jackpot at the Wishlist sale. Dynamite produced Finnegan 4F, and the rest is well documented history. The biggest compliment we ever received was people remarking how fast we were progressing since our first foray into the show world in 2016. To us that just confirmed that all the building blocks were in place, it was just a matter of presenting it properly. Building a herd like this is a work in progress, and it will always be that. We were nowhere close to being finished breeding Gelbvieh cattle. But circumstances dictate otherwise. This sale literally has something to offer for everyone. Donor cows, proven older cows, exciting younger cows, top notch replacements, heifer calves and bull calves, and last but certainly not least an exciting herd sire line up. And let’s not forget about embryo’s and semen. Here is the complete line up for your perusal. We are very proud to have raised these animals, and it’s not easy to let them go. It has been very hard work, but also very rewarding in more ways than we can count. We rest assured that these cattle will continue to make their mark in the Gelbvieh breed for their new owners. After over 10 years of developing a herd of superior maternal females through the use of A.I. sires from some of the best Gelbvieh breeders and in turn utilizing their sons as herdbulls, in 2015 the decision was made to go outside our herd and look for that one bull that would give us the 71 FRL FIR RIVER RED CHILLI 451Y BW extra genetic edge we needed and put the Hillsdown name on the map. We looked far and wide 205D 1036 DL JEN-TY DYNAMITE throughout the U.S. and Canada, we finally found him at the 2016 Wishlist bull jackpot. DL Jen-Ty DL JEN-TY CINDY 273U 365D 1443 Dynamite 18D checked all the boxes for us. We had to dig deep into our financial resources to get JRI POP A TOP 197T83 him at the 2017 Jen-Ty bull sale, but that’s what you have to do if you want the good ones. DynaHDG AVERY 13D HDG BAYLEE 14B mite turned out to be an amazing herdsire, siring replacement females an exceptional bulls. That spring Dynamite bred Avery 13D, a beautiful Pop a Top daughter. This mating produced HDG CE BW WW YW MILK TM PG30 STAY CW CREA MARB CFAT FPI Hillsdown Finnegan 4F. He had our attention from day one: dark red with a thick luscious hair coat, 23 -4.4 78 110 24 63 -0.98 18 29 0.91 0.14 -0.03 88.05 full of zip yet gentle and sweet as they come. Avery exceeded all expectations by taking her first calf from a 73 lbs birthweight to a staggering 1036 lbs weaning weight. Finnegan was named Reserve champion Bull calf and the duo was named reserve champion junior pair at Farmfair International in 2018. Avery is an exceptional female and in our opinion, as well as many others that have seen her, one of the best females in the breed. For the 2019 breeding season we offered Finnegan semen available to Canadian and American breeders. Larson’s Lost River Livestock secured the exclusive rights to Finnegan for the US for 2 years. This turned out to be a great partnership. Larson’s mated Finnegan to some of their top producers and the results were incredible, as was evident in their sale. What an astounding group of bulls sired by Finnegan. Thank you to David Larson and Larson’s Lost River Livestock for placing your confidence in our program and congratulations on your sale results, both on your bulls and the bred heifer carrying a Finnegan heifer calf pregnancy being the highest seller in the North Dakota Golden Rule sale. For the 2020 Canadian Gelbvieh Bull Futurity we entered 2 Finnegan sons, Hillsdown Bootmaker 5H and Hillsdown Heartbreaker 27H. Both made it to the final 6, and Bootmaker ended up being named Winner’s Choice and now calls Long Lane Livestock his home. We can’t wait to see what this guy will do in their herd. Finnegan makes both bulls and females, as is evident in the fact that over half of the replacement pen here is made up of his extraordinary daughters. You haven’t seen Finnegan daughters for sale as of yet, because everyone is retaining them for their own programs. Each of these females show the traits that Finnegan transmits best: beautiful skull shape, added depth of rib, length of spine, the perfect wedge both from the top and the side, tremendous hip and length from hooks to pins, the second thigh extending to the back of the knee with perfect well balanced bone and all of this walks around on magnificently structured feet. 400 doses of Finnegan semen made available to the US market for the 2021 breeding season sold out in less than 24 hours, ensuring that there will be plenty of Finnegan sired offspring hitting the ground in the coming years. This breed leading sire has been many years in the making, and it sure is not easy to let him go. He puts a smile on our faces every time we see him, and we haven’t grown tired of looking at him yet. Our intention is to sell this bull along with his semen rights and current semen inventory, but we haven’t decided yet on how that package will be presented. Good things sometimes come in small packages. Here is a very moderate hard working 2nd calver. She comes from a Pop a Top sired dam, and she herself is sired by Bucky, and Bucky is a full maternal brother to Candy Girl 13 C. In my mind this is quite an impressive pedigree: Candy Girl, Pop A Top and JDPD Astro all feature in it. Don’t let lack of frame fool you, this is as hardworking a girl as you’ll ever see. Look for her to produce moderate framed replacement females that will work as hard as she does. She raised a Finnegan sired heifer calf this year that is very well put together, she catches your eye right away, not because of her size but because of her soundness, graceful movement and just overall eye appeal.

Another one of the Sir A daughters, this one out of our Kara 4Z cow. Kara definitely passed on her genes to Lara, the two are hard to tell apart. We consider this a huge compliment to both, in that Lara is a topnotch animal, and that Kara is still very youthful for her age. Lara is a nicely balanced cow, with a superb udder. Essie is another one of those hardworking JRI Homebrew daughters. We love this one, she is so perfectly balanced and structurally sound. She strides out perfectly on wonderfully shaped feet and legs, and check out that perfectly attached udder. She also knows how to turn out top end calves and this years effort, a heifer calf by Finnegan 4F, is absolutely out of this world. Don’t miss out on this one come sale day. 9Z’s dam, Katy 44W, just happens to be Finnegan 4F’s great grand dam, and still producing in our herd. This would indicate built in longevity and performance. This is a very difficult cow to let go of for us. We knew she was going to be special before she was even born. Back in the day, Wanda had secured the last 20 doses of JRI Pop a Top semen available for the Canadian market. She said she had the perfect cow in mind for this sire. That was HDG Bailee 14B. Long story short, we bred her to Pop a Top and out came this wonderful dark red heifer calf. While she was growing into the heifer that we fell in love with, we also purchased DL 18D Jen-Ty Dynamite. Avery was the first heifer he bred, and the result of this mating was HDG Finnegan 4F. Avery really ties it all together like no other cow in the breed. I think every seedstock operation has one or two cows that always needed to be flushed, but somehow never did. This is one of them. We always talked about getting her flushed, but it never happened. This cow is absolutely sensational. This young lady here is one of the reasons that our herd dispersal is a very difficult thing to do. All our years of breeding, selecting, culling and purchasing are coming together in this absolutely gorgeous, bred heifer. She is the product of a mating between Candy Girl 13C and Finnegan 4F, both of which have extensive write ups in this catalog. Candy Apple literally checks every box. Winnifred is another one of those perfectly uddered Boxer daughters. She comes from our 28C Calico Sky cow, another one of those hard working Sir A daughters. Calico Sky has been an excellent producer for us, and we see no reason whatsoever that Winnifred would be any different. If ever there was a cow that produces huge performance out of a very moderate frame, this is the one. Last years bullcalf was her first one, and his picture ended up on the cover of our bull catalog this spring. This year she is raising a bull calf by Finnegan, and it is another ripper of a calf. Camelia came to us from Foursquare Farms via the Gelbvieh Wishlist sale as a heifer calf. She impressed us with her soft muscle, depth of rib, and overall soundness on great feet and legs. Allright Gal, or Ali, as she’s known around here, has become a huge favorite at Hillsdown. We purchased her from Aaron Birch at the 2014 Wishlist sale as a bred heifer. We were told that Glynn, a Gelbvieh breeder from Ontario who raised her, thought very highly of her and we can see why. Ali is a never miss cow, and raises a top end calf every year. This was evident in her 2020 effort, a bull calf sired by Finnegan that went on to win Winners Choice in the Canadian Gelbvieh Bull Futurity. To date she has raised 3 bull calves that all went on to be herdsires in commercial herds across Western Canada, and 3 heifer calves that are currently producing in our herd. This year she raised a heifer calf by Gunsmoke. Ali entered our donor pen and was flushed for the first time this spring, giving us 16 grade 1 embryos sired by Finnegan. Ali has a personality all her own, she definitely is a Alpha cow. She has this awesome blend of docility, a no nonsense attitude with a unique sense of humor. We purchased Bonita at the Wish List sale from Lawes Gelbvieh. She is a larger framed girl, soft muscled and thick throughout. She is very docile and halter broke, as she was a 4H heifer project for one of the Lawes kids. She caught our eye as a bred heifer and we liked who she was bred to. Bonita walks around on solid feet and legs, has a nice straight top line, has good depth of rib and tops it all off with a very nice udder. Bonita is CONFIRMED PREGNANT TO FINNEGAN 4F FOR A JANUARY 20 CALF.

Elliah is a JRI Super Duty sired cow out of GSW Allright Gal A2. She seems set to carry on her dams tradition of producing top end calves. Her bull calf from 2020, sired by HDG Fever Pitch, made it into our bull pen this spring and sold to Shane Lawrence. Which is very nice, because his new owner lives 2 miles down the road and we get to see him at work every once and a while. He is a living testament that Allright Gals genes are transmitted through her daughter. Lil Bit 9G is the result of a proven genetic package. JRI Super Duty x JRI Homebrew. Both sires have worked very well for us, and the combination of the two has produced calves like the 2019 Bull Futurity finalist Huawei 5G. (Who can forget that name?) Lil Bit is moderately framed, correct in her make up, with a very nice udder. For her first effort she raised a heifer calf by HDG Earthquake 16E. She is a very hard worker, and put everything she had into her calf. LIL BIT IS PASTURE EXPOSED TO FINNEGAN 4F FOR A LATE MARCH CALF.

Earthquake is a black Pop a Top son out of Lady Briella 5B. He is a true heifer bull, along with a calving ease EPD of 16, his whole build shows easy calving. He has a small but nicely shaped head, smooth shoulders and they’re angled perfectly. Earthquake has run cleanup on our replacement pen for 3 years, unfortunately when you A.I. as much as we have, there wasn’t ever a whole lot of work for him, so we don’t have nearly as many offspring of him as we would like. This bull is an absolute tank. At the time of picturing he had not had any grain at all, this is all pasture, and not a very good pasture at that, seeing as this was one of the driest summers on record. His dam is a standout around here, we have another son of hers on offer in this sale as well. Like all our other herdsires, Earthquake is fully halterbroke, and very easy to work with.

Gunsmoke is a son of Birch’s The Boxer 21D and HDG Candy Girl 13C. Both of the parents have already been mentioned in this catalog, so by now you will have a pretty good idea of what we’re looking at here. We really should have named him Extra. He has extra length, extra bone, extra hip, extra butt, you name it , he has extra of it. He really ties all the desirable traits of both parents together in an incredibly attractive package. We think that this is the best bull The Boxer has sired to date. Of course we’re biased and we’re already looking forward to the discussion that this bold statement will bring. Gunsmoke is a performance bull, and at the time of this writing his first calfcrop was just weaned. His calves look awesome, he stamps his offspring much like his fellow herdsire Finnegan in that when you look at the calf, you know right away who the sire is. For a 2 year old, Gunsmoke is exceptionally well developed, and is athletic beyond belief. When he walks the earth moves below his feet. He is also fully show broke and an absolute pleasure to be around. We mated Gunsmoke to some of our cows of which we believed that they would do better if bred to a bit more power, and did that ever work out well. One of the best examples being HDG 14J, a Gunsmoke daughter out of FRSQ Camelia 2C. What an unbelievable heifer calf, and she is also featured in this sale. Look for Gunsmoke to transmit power, performance, style and fantastic udders.

VIRGIN BULL A no-holes herd bull. Muscle with a big wide top. He moves like a cat on perfectly shaped feet and legs. He has that freeness of stride that we all like to see in a herd sire. We purchased 68H at the Davidson Gelbvieh bull sale this spring. We were looking for a bull with some degree of calving ease, but a huge amount of performance of well. This one fit the profile to let loose in our heifer pen. We have so much calving ease built into our heifers, we figured a little more performance wouldn’t hurt. We were very much looking forward to seeing the results of these matings, unfortunately for us someone else is going to reap the rewards.

We have a few females that are confirmed pregnant to Bootmaker, so we need to include him as a service sire. Bootmaker is a Finnegan son out of GSW Allright Gal A2. We took Bootmaker to the 2020 Canadian Gelbvieh Bull Futurity, and he was picked as Winner’s Choice. He went to Long Lane Cattle Co., but we did an owner’s collection for on farm use only. We were very impressed with this bull, he showed impressive growth, depth, length and overall thickness. We decided to flush his dam to Finnegan to create more of this genetic combination. She gave us 14 #1 embryos, also available in this sale.

When I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in late 2014 the first thing family and friends close to me said was “Well, I guess you had better sell your herd”. The thought actually hadn’t even crossed my mind. Maybe it was my ignorance as to the severity of breast cancer or it was my own ego of “ I got this and I can do it all”. Either way, it drove me to dig in deep, plant one foot in front of the other, to carry on and work hard to put this all behind me. I suppose my life would have been a lot different in the past 6 years had I listened. We would have traveled the world like we had planned one day and I would have taken up a few more hobbies, maybe even finished my cook book but I wouldn’t have had the satisfying memories that working with this herd has been. From my early morning runs through the pastures with my 2 loves Nikki and Kate to the late evening unexpected chores, to having a beautiful calf born on a warm sun shiny day or to cuddling a very cold newborn baby in my kitchen foyer at 3 am and praying I can do everything to save it. Perhaps the final outcome for me would have been different but all of these moments would have been missed out on, the tears of joy and the tears of heartbreak. There definitely would not have been the friendships that have been made throughout the past 6 years be it through 4H, the Gelbvieh Association, participating in cattle shows and of course my very favorite part, getting to know so many diverse and wonderful people in the livestock sector all around the globe. As I sit here waiting for yet another test to see just how soon this life ending disease will be, I look back with no regrets spending the last 17 years of my life especially the past 6, caring for, nurturing and improving this little Hillsdown Gelbvieh herd. It truly has been a labor of love filled with ups and downs and whatever comes our way we have been able to dig deep and find a path through the devastating droughts, brutally cold winters and unexpected circumstances out of our control. Who knows what the next chapter will look like, I do know I will miss out on so very much and that is the hardest part of all of this. My wish is that Hillsdown Gelbvieh will carry on in other herds being productive and creating many wonderful memories of their own and I hope you enjoy walking through them in your herds as much as I have in mine. Thank you to everyone who has helped pull this dispersal together in such a very short time....
