Belle Plaine, Area Continues Slow, Steady Growth City Gains 40 Households, 240 Residents Since 2010 Census

If you’ve noticed a few more people on the streets of Belle Plaine the past few years, you’re right. The community is slowly growing. After a few years of stagnant population growth, the latest estimates indicate Belle Plaine is growing. In 2010 – the last formal count of residents by the U.S. Census Bureau – Belle Plaine was home to 6,661 people living in 2,362 households, just a tick over 2.8 people per household. The city’s 2010 population, the Census Bureau says, was 3,789 in 2000. The Metropolitan Council – the agency charged with planning regional growth and services – issues annual population estimates. Its calculated 2010 Census CITIES Pop. Workers reconstructing West Main at Crest streets inadvertently clipped a 2-inch natural Belle Plaine 6,661 gas line Monday afternoon. The leak sent gas fumes throughout the area. Police warned area Jordan 5,470 residents to avoid open flames. Board Adopts Tight Budgets for 2017-‘18 School Year With a stagnant enrollment that hasn’t increased much in the past five years and legislative aid being outpaced by increasing costs of doing business, the Belle Plaine School Board approved its budget for next year. The budget calls for $17.185 million in general fund spending, about three-fourths of

which go to negotiated salary and benefits of the district’s staff. The district expects to take in just over $18.144 million in general fund revenue. The district’s general fund in 2016-17 called for $16.03 million in revenue and $16.21 million in spending. Overall, the school district expects to spend $21,911,393 in

B.P. OKs Co-op Ice Hockey Deal Belle Plaine’s Matt Fink knows where he’ll play ice hockey this winter. And even if he doesn’t make the school varsity team, Fink is thrilled knowing he’ll be playing in familiar territory with friends and teammates he’s known for years. The BPHS sophomore-to-be is one of a handful of students expected to take advantage of a new cooperative agreement allowing Belle Plaine students to join a team based in Le Sueur-Henderson and including students from St. Peter, Tri-City United, and Cleveland high schools. Those school districts’ school boards all voted earlier this month to accept Belle Plaine as part of the coop team. Monday (June 26), Belle Plaine formalized its plans to join the cooperative ice hockey program. Talks on a proposed move to join the cooperative have been ongoing for months. The member schools had to dissolve the previous arrangement and then reform with Belle Plaine as a member. “It’s a great opportunity for our kids,” said Superintendent Ryan Laager. A defenseman, Fink isn’t quite certain he’s good enough to make the varsity yet. He can accept improving his skills as a member of the junior varsity. “There are some guys who are ahead of me,” he said. Fink grew up playing ice hockey in the Le Sueur youth system. “I’m just happy I’ll be able to play with my friends. I’m really excited. I’m happy they approved it so I can play with my friends again.” Fink played last year on a Le Sueur bantam team. Because of

his age, his options are limited. He could either play on a high school team or play on a junior gold team in Prior Lake, a team designed for high school-agers who are not playing on a high school team. “I don’t know anybody over there,” he said. Aiming to provide more Belle Plaine students with a wider array of opportunities to keep them from leaving, BPHS Activities Director John Bergs held preliminary behind-thescenes talks on forming an ice hockey cooperative with New Prague. Separate talks on joining the Southwest Christian/ Richfield co-op were also held before the possibility of joining Le Sueur-Henderson/St. Peter/ TCU/Cleveland. An easing of rules on how enrollment figures into the class the team plays in allowed Belle Plaine to join the cooperative team without pushing it from Class A to Class AA. “New Prague seemed really attractive, but things just kind of stalled,” Bergs said. He expects less than 10 Belle Plaine students will want to play ice hockey. Most will be boys, he said. Fink and any other Belle Plaine students who want to play high school hockey on the Le Sueur-Henderson/St. Peter/ TCU/Cleveland will be responsible for their own transportation to and from practices and games. Fink doesn’t yet have a driver’s license and he’s not sure how he’ll get to practice and games. For now, he’s not too worried about it. “I have no idea what I’ll do,” he said. “I’m just excited they approved it.”

2017-18, an increase of nearly $1.08 million over 2016-17 spending thanks to a lighting improvement project and other maintenance work. Its revenue in 2017-18 is expected to exceed $22.84 million, up from $20.607 million thanks to bond sales. The approved 2017-‘18 budget includes over $364,735 in reductions to the growth of the budget. Those cuts include staffing positions, elimination of classes with low registration, funding for mentors and professional learning community leaders, supplies, and more. The approval comes at a time the district is expecting only a slight increase in enrollment. The school board is negotiating contracts with the unions representing its teachers (BPEA) and clerical, para-professional and custodial staffs. The board is assuming salary and benefits for all employees will increase 3 percent next year to allow for steps (experience) and lane (education) increases for current contracts. That translates to an additional $184,000 in steps and lanes at the start of 2017-18.

approximation of Belle Plaine says the city had 6,742 residents in 2015 and 6,901 residents as of May of 2016. That’s a gain of 240 people over the six years since the Census Bureau’s formal count. Cynthia Smith Strack, Belle Plaine’s director of Community Development, says there’s no reason to believe the Metropolitan Council’s approximation isn’t reasonably accurate. Strack Smith agreed with the notion the increase over six years hasn’t exactly placed a huge burden on city services. “We added almost 40 single family homes last year and anticipate at least that many new homes this year. Our most sluggish development years during great recession were actually on the rebound in 2011 and 2012,” she said. “We’ve been trending positive since then and I expect that to continue. I foresee steady growth over next year.”

Jordan took a good-sized bite out of the population disparity between it and Belle Plaine. The 2010 Census indicated Belle Plaine had 1,191 more residents than Jordan. But between 2010 and 2016, Jordan gained 743 new residents to Belle Plaine’s 240. Jordan also gained 251 new households to Belle Plaine’s 40. Cologne is one of the faster growing communities in the area. It gained an estimated 184 residents between 2010 and 2016. The city also enjoyed the benefits of 54 new houses during the same span. Both Carver and Scott counties saw significant growth since the 2010 Census. Carver County has topped the 100,000 mark with 10.5 percent growth since the decennial census. Scott County’s population grew by more than 12,000 people since 2010, an increase just shy of 10 percent.

The board also approved its operating capital budget, a plan that will have the board dipping into its reserves. The district plans to spend $277,907 in operating capital projects next year. The money will go toward payments on an energy savings project at Chatfield Elementary, textbooks, technology equipment and repairs, site and grounds improvements, and other needs worth a total of $279,935. The array of projects will reduce the operating capital fund balance by $1,828 to $349,340.35. Director Dan Gardner, the school board’s chairman, lamented the loss of the “Minnesota Miracle,” a system of legislatively-approved funding of public schools in the 1970s through the early-2000s. The Wyman family of rural Belle Plaine -- (from left) Jack, Wyatt, Terry, Chris, and Daniel -- recently opened Belle Plaine Motor Company on East Enterprise Drive.

B.P. Motor Company Opens for Auto Sales, Service, U-Haul Rental Chris Wyman recognizes the new home of Belle Plaine Motor Company may remind people of the convenience store that once occupied the building. He and his family are working to bring new life to the property. The Wyman family recently opened Belle Plaine Motor Company at 405 Enterprise Drive East. The business has brought life to a vacant lot by offering previously owned vehicles, auto service and U-Haul items and materials for moving. Chris and his wife, Terry, purchased the property at auction in April of 2016. Chris and sons, Jack, Daniel and Wyatt, will run the business. The family’s plan is that eventually the three boys

– all Belle Plaine High School graduates – will eventually take over the operation. “It’s a perfect fit for them,” Terry said. The property seems well suited for the business. Unlike a convenience store, they don’t need direct access off Highway 169 the way the convenience store did. Chris knows people looking for a vehicle, purchasing moving supplies or renting a U-Haul truck or trailer will find their way to the business. They are the only U-Haul rental outlet in the area. “The loss of access really hurt them,” Wyman said of the former owners who couldn’t survive the loss of the access to Highway 169. “It went from

a thriving business to almost zero.” The Wyman family has been working for over a year to prepare the building for opening. Gone are the coolers and display shelves from the convenience store. They have an eye to the future. Offices will eventually replace the walk-in cooler. The family looks forward to the day when they can resurface the parking lot and convert the car wash building into a service area. Belle Plaine Motor Company will be open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. “When we get busier, we’ll keep the hours open more,” he said.

Having read news reports their community’s Fourth of July fireworks display might not be held for lack of a sponsor, a pair of New Prague men took up the cause to raise needed funding to keep the community tradition going. Jeff Belzer of Jeff Belzer’s Auto answered the call for donations to fund the July 3 fireworks show near the middle school at Columbus Avenue and Scott County Road 37. Noah Stephens, a recent high school graduate heading into military service, is working with Paul Busch, commander of New Prague American Legion Post 45, to raise the needed funding for insurance, site preparation and other miscellaneous costs associated with the show, the New Prague Times recently reported. The need for funding recently arose when the show’s primary sponsor announced it would no longer sponsor the display. The two men contacted the city about their plans. With a permit for the show, they also reportedly contacted the school district for use of a site and a local pyrotechnics firm to produce the show. Busch and Stephens will be asking the legion to consider funding. With the help of legion members, letters were sent out to area businesses seeking donations. Belzer responded with a generous donation. Last year’s show cost about $11,000. The two men have set up an account at State Bank of New Prague bank to raise the additional money for this year’s show and future displays.

Bar-B-Q Days Coin Hunt Begins

The ďŹ rst clue for the 2017 Bar-B-Q Days Medallion Hunt is published below. Additional clues, if necessary, will be published in the July 5 and 12 issues of the Herald. The same rules apply as last year. The search area includes all of the Belle Plaine city limits. A map of the city limits can be found online. The medallion is located on public property and is not more than 6 feet off the ground. It is not on the Hooper-Bowler-Hillstrom historical house property Who: Open to all ages & abilities - or inside Tiger Park baseball

According to Belle Plaine police, a person on the 900 block of South Elm Street called police at 4:10 p.m. June 1 for assistance with a suicidal female. The reporting person told police Barbara Ann Stuart had made previous unsuccessful attempts at suicide, according to the criminal complaint. Stuart told police she “was depressed because of pain resulting from a back injury. But now she has children to live for, the complaint says, so she is not contemplating suicide. Stuart told police, according to the criminal complaint, she ordered Percocet via a Web site based in India. The package contained 127 pills. The charge states the narcotics tested positive for codeine/ morphine. Stuart did not have a prescription, according to the criminal complaint. The Web site drugs.com lists Percocet as “a combination of acetaminophen and oxycodone. Oxycodone is an opioid pain medication. An opioid is sometimes called a narcotic. Acetaminophen is a less potent pain reliever that increases the effects of oxycodone. Percocet is used to relieve moderate to severe pain.

BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA

Thirty Years Ago This Week

Belle Plaine Elementary students raised $920.75 in the MS Read-A-Thon. The top readers and the amounts they raised were (from left) Wendy Lange, $100 for fourth place; Emily Hodapp, $157 for first place; Joshua Osterkamp, $128.50 for second place; and Teddy Stier, $101.10 for third place.

Minnesota Farm Bureau Fretting Trump’s Budget Plan for Crop Insurance

“Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation is extremely concerned President Trump’s administration is proposing budget cuts to the farm bill, specifically crop insurance. These are decisions we strongly oppose,” said Minnesota Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF) President Kevin Paap. “Crop insurance provides a strong safety net when help is needed most. The current farm economy demonstrates how important these programs are. Cutting them would be devastating

to farm families, our state and rural Minnesota economies.” This is a public-private partnership that works, he said. “We cannot balance the budget on the backs of the farm bill. To protect our nation, you need to protect a stable food supply.” Farmers are looking forward to working with members of the Minnesota congressional delegation to ensure “agriculture has a seat at the table during the upcoming budget discussions,” said Paap.

The old Kerry Lake School building and property were sold to the Faxon Township Board for a token $1 at the meeting of the Belle Plaine School Board on June 29. When the school consolidated with the Belle Plaine School District years ago, there was no record registered with the Sibley County Courthouse in Gaylord as to whether the property stayed with the school district or went back to the township. This sale cleared up ownership of the property so that the building and less than one-third of an acre could be sold to Todd Lane of the Twin Cities. Lane planned to refurbish the building to its original state and use it as an art studio. Lowell Hoffman, high school principal, requested the school board extend a new attendance policy to the junior high school grades 7-9 for the 1987-88 school year. The policy, which had been enforced that year in the high school grades 10-12, stated that students who missed 15 classes in one semester – excluding class-related absences, medical absences, and parental requests - would fail that class for the semester. However, Hoffman said other circumstances would be considered on an individual basis. Dr. John Bartholow, who was retiring after twenty years with the district, attended his final meeting on June 29 as superintendent of the Belle Plaine Schools. His successor, Tom Lubovich, was also in attendance. Andy and Lori Monson of Coon Rapids purchased the 15unit Belle Plaine Motel from Jeanne Multer of Stillwater. This was their first pventure into the motel business, and the Monsons had no immediate plans to make any changes. Paul Stenglein, owner of a painting business in Waconia specializing in the highup repair business of fixing smokestacks, steeples and flagpoles000, repaired the cross on top of Our Lady of the Prairie’s steeple, which had been blown over by wind. Stenglein straddled the church’s steeple about 85 feet above ground, using wooden wedges to straighten the cross to its original appearance. The mission was accomplished in spite of brisk winds on June 26 and the church bells ringing twelve times at noon. With July 4th on a Saturday, some stores adjusted their hours of business on Friday by closing early or all day; however, most were planning to remain open regular hours. Government officials lead the way in observing the holiday on the 3rd by closing county and city offices all day on Friday. The Minnesota Housing Financial Agency had a total of $45,000,000 in below-market interest rate financing available for low and moderate income, first-time homebuyers or for those who had not owned a home in the past three years. Homebuyers were eligible for 30-year, fixed rate mortgage loans at an 8.70 percent interest rate. Maximum price for homes

tana; Mr. and Mrs. Chester Clark, nee Boor, from St. Paul; and John Boor from New Richmond, Wis. Mrs. Gulula Karis, 82, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. M. P. Hahn, with whom she was staying. Her funeral was held from her former home in Jordan. James Bailey Sr. arrived from Oklahoma City for his annual summer visit in his old home neighborhood. In St. Paul took the marriage of Miss Nora Peterson, daughter of Mrs. Bertha Peterson of Belle Plaine, to Ervin Utech of St. Paul. Two young men driving a stolen car were in so much of a hurry that they smacked into a car of a Henderson woman near the William Laabs farm. The stolen car went into the ditch and caught fire, but the thieves ran into the woods and got away. The Belle Plaine Boy Scouts were in camp at Fish Lake. J.A. Mohrbacher was scout master and Eugene Johnson was his assistant. At St. Thomas Church, Jessenland, took place the marriage of Miss Ellen Joyce to Francis Sweeney. Mrs. Jane Simcox was give a big surprise party on her 76th birthday at her home in Keystone. Michael O’Connor, 64, died at his home in Bismarck, N.D. and his remains were brought to his old home of St. Thomas for funeral services and burial. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Wherley, longtime residents of Faxon Township and later of Belle Plaine, celebrated their gold wedding at their home in Kenmore, N. D. with a gathering of all their children and their families. Carver County sheriff claimed capture in that county of the most complete and gigantic moonshine liquor plant ever known in this section of the state. The St. Paul men who operated it had a hundred gallons in process or manufacture, 93 barrels of mash, and 75 gallons of moonshine ready to market. Four Carver County youths planned to give the village of New Germany a real awakening on the morning of the Fourth. They set off 12 pounds of dynamite in the middle of the main street. It awakened the town all right but also shattered nearly all the windows, and the concussion caused leaks in several large oil tanks.

Despite the cool weather everyone was comfortable in the Heidelberg picnic shelter with lots of good food and prizes. Greg and Jayne Weiers, their children, grandchildren also Jayne’s mom Alice Schanus and all her children and families enjoyed their annual week-

long vacation on Rush Lake. Fishing, golfing, fish fries, relaxing and nice weather made for a great gathering. Fourteen camper families of the former Kmart family and friends group, now known as the Happy Camper group filled Allansons Park in Henderson for the annual Sauerkraut weekend festivities. Most campers spent four nights enjoying yard games, good food and the Kraut activities downtown. The annual Saturday night potluck was a wonderful fish fry compliments of the fisherman in the group. After dinner everyone attended the annual “Owl Parade”. Six of the gals had there own entry in the parade. The Kraut Koaster was a big hit and quite a few laughs along the parade route. The Owl parade is a spoof of just about anything goes silliness. A great time was had by all. Humor Corner: Ole is quite a clown-----always joking. Even when he was laid up in the hospital and someone knocked on the door, he’d call out “who goes dere --- friend or enema?”

St. Thomas by: Loni Graham Upcoming Masses at St. Thomas with Father Roger Hessian: July 8@5 p.m., August 5@5 p.m., September 9@5 p.m.; and July 29 at 4 p.m. with Father James Burns. Father Andrew Stueve celebrates Mass at St. Anne’s in Le Sueur on Saturdays at 5:15 p.m., and Sundays at 8 and 10:30 a.m. The scenery in St. Thomas is forever changed again after this last weekend. The Fire Departments from New Prague and Le Sueur did a controlled burn on our “modern” parish house at St. Thomas, built in 1937 over the basement of the old house after it was moved. Saturday, June 24 around 7 a.m., it started slow, “training for the firemen.” Fire trucks lined the south side of St. Thomas’s main street. There were numbers written on the siding of the house “code numbers for the firemen” we were told. As they broke windows, the fire grew higher and hotter. We could feel the heat as we stood next to the church. Wind from the west blew smoke toward the three O’Connell homes. The firemen kept watering the close outbuildings and the trees, as flames crackled out windows. We watched the fire, the smoke, and saw the black soot on the firemens faces. When the house was billowing thick smoke from the windows up above on the southeast side, there were still firemen in the house! It was all over by 1 o’clock. St. Thomas folks have a renewed respect for what firemen do. Father Stueve was present to observe the “Holy Smoke.” Folks and firemens’ families sat on chairs, in golf-carts and on the lawn on the east side of the church. Our own Bob Connelly, on the New Prague Fire Department, and Pete Burns on the Le

Sueur Fire Department, were among the firemen, and their young families were among us. Knowing fine men like Bob and Pete were among the firemen somehow made the fire feel... not so hot. Fine guys like Tom Connelly, Jim Oak, Barney Burns, Todd Sullivan and Chuck Retka did much of the behind the scene pre-burn disconnecting and prep work. Doc O’Connell, Todd Sullivan, Chuck Retka and Tom Connelly were among the men who did the clean up. The women were busy pre-burn salvaging, like Kathy Connelly, Catherine and Marie Retka, and many others. Many hands made light work. All that’s left is the landscaping. Henderson’s Sauerkraut Days Tractor Ride got in a little excitement passing through St. Thomas Saturday, about 40 tractors manuevered around the fire trucks. A little chilly. The Owl Parade was a hoot! Sunday’s parade was full of families, fun, balloons and candy, candy, candy! A benefit for Myles, infant son of Mike and Ashley Schoesser, will be held July 8 beginning at 4 p.m. at the Le Center Legion. Myles, the grandson of Bill and Shelly Genelin and Gary “Chipper” Schlosser and Christa Boettcher Schloesser, was born March 14, 2017 and was transferred to the NICU at St. Mary’s Hospital where he was diagnosed with Noonan Syndrome at 8 weeks old. A Ride will start at the Le Sueur County Fairgrounds in Le Center with registration between 8–9 a.m. The Ride departs at 9:30 am and will finish at Le Center Legion to join Benefit. See ya there. Reminder: St Thomas Ladies Luncheon on Tuesday, July 11 at 11:30 a.m. at the Fish Tale in New Prague.

Belle Plaine Trap Team Enjoys Solid Showing at State BPHS Takes 30th at State

After a year where the team finished seventh in its conference, the Belle Plaine High School trapshooting team enjoyed its best rounds of shooting at just the right time. The Tigers finished 30th in the 40team state meet Saturday at the Minneapolis Gun Club. The Tigers finished among the top 10 percent of the approximately 345 high school trapshooting teams in the state, said coach Jack Schuneman. Belle Plaine earned its way into the Minnesota State High School League State Meet with a solid showing at the competition in Alexandria the previous week.

“We peaked at the right time,” Schuneman said. “They really got hot.” Belle Plaine finished with a team total of 422, six clay target hits behind Blackduck High School’s 428. St. Michael-Albertville won the team competition with a 480 score. Hibbing (474), Blaine (470), Delano (467), Apple Valley (467), Zimmerman, (463), Stillwater (463), United South Central (462), Spring Grove, and Rogers (458) rounded out the top 10 teams. Individually, Brandon Heitz led Belle Plaine. He hit 47 of 50 targets (24-23) in the first round and 49 out of 50 (25-24) in the second round of competition. Wyatt Herrmann was Belle Plaine’s next shooter, finishing

with a 90. He hit 45 of 50 targets in the opening round (2322) and 45 of 50 in the second round (22-23) of shooting. Belle Plaine’s Darren Jeurissen finished with an 82. He finished with a 41 of 50 (22-19) in both the first and second rounds of shooting. Jacob Maresch finished with a 78. Maresch hit 42 of 50 (22-20) clay targets in the first round and finished up hitting 36 of 50 (20-16) in the second round of shooting. Nickolas Grams finished with a 76 for the Tigers. He hit 37 (21-16) of 50 targets in the first round and 39 of 50 (19-20) targets in the second round. Individually, the top 13 scores were all 66 of 100 or better.

Town Team Baseball

Tigers Third at Farming Tourney by Brett Kruschke, Matt Schultz & Mike Schultz Ten years ago, Team Tigertown made its first invitational tournament road trip in over a decade when Belle Plaine ventured to Stearns County and Freeport’s new ballpark, where The Tigers made some memories and participated for eight straight years. A new Stearns County tournament has arisen – the Farming Baseball Invitational in Farming – and just like that first tourney in 2007, the Tigers surprised themselves with solid play to finish in third place. The Tigers walloped Sauk Centre Saturday in the teams’ first matchup since the 2001 state tournament, then suffered a third consecutive shutout to the Sartell Muskies later Saturday night. Sunday, the locals held on for a one-run win over the Atwater Chuckers. Belle Plaine will play a pair of home games this week before taking a respite through the Fourth of July holiday. The Hamburg Hawks will be here Thursday, 7:30 p.m., for Little League Night, where all Little Leaguers will receive a free hot dog. And of course, age 11 and under is always free. Youngsters, wear your jerseys and chase foul balls ‘til your pockets teem with quarters. Friday will be Matt Saxe Chevrolet Buick Night when the Tigers take on the Le Sueur Braves at 7:30 pm, and the first 100 fans in attendance will receive a free T-shirt. By the way, team statistician Zac Dahlke has caught up on the stats, and you can visit bptigertown.com/stats.htm to find out that the Tigers’ leading (qualified) hitters are Matt Schultz (.438), Luke Narveson (.436) and Aiden Ladd (.420). Mitchel Stier leads the pitching staff with a 1.84 ERA. Tigers 12, Sauk Centre 0 Stier has been the Tigers’ best pitcher this season and accordingly got the starting nod for the first game of the tournament Saturday (June 24). The righthander, who finished with five strikeouts while surrendering three hits and a walk, protected a 1-0 lead through four innings before turning the lead over to the bullpen. Josh Terrio was even better than Stier, facing the minimum number of batters over three innings and yielding no runs in earning the save. Terrio gave up one hit, no walks and struck out a pair.

Team Tigertown broke the game open late, with five runs in the sixth inning and four in the seventh. Carsen Ladd continued his hot hitting, going 4-for-5 with four RBI and a double. Narveson set the table before him and also had a big day, collecting three hits in five trips while driving in four. Ryan Bremseth-Vining scored two runs and drove in a pair from the ninth slot in the order.

Sartell Muskies 3, Tigers 0 Belle Plaine’s last two matchups with the Muskies were shutout losses in state tournament action: 10-0 in the 2013 Class C state title game, and 4-0 in 2014 at Belle Plaine, in the first round of the C state tourney. So, scoring a run would’ve been a victory of some sort. The Tigers did well to avoid Sartell’s 1A ace, David Deminsky, who threw a completegame, seven-inning (all tournament games are seven innings) no-hitter Friday night against the host Farming Flames. Deminsky snuffed out the Flames with 15 strikeouts. The Chatfielders instead faced Sartell’s Option 1B in Adam Wenker, who is no slouch himself. Wenker went the distance, yielding five hits and one walk while fanning four. Nathan Herman got the first mound assignment of his town team career. Herman experienced his first ‘Welcome-toTigertown’ moment just three batters into the game when big Tim Burns hit a massive two-run homer. Herman settled down after that and gave up just one more run before departing after four frames. Chase Emmers worked 2.2 innings of one-hit relief. He walked three batters and left the bases loaded in the seventh, when Jonny Vinkemeier was summoned. Vink did his job, recording the final out. Five Belle Plainians collected one hit each. As Lou Brown once said in the classic film, Major League, “Someday we’ll figure out how to beat those guys.” Tigers 5, Atwater 4 After playing well while splitting the first two games of the tournament, the Tiger Train chugged into the third-place contest looking to finish their Stearns County get-together with a victory. The Chatfielders started with three runs in the first inning and two more in the third for a 5-0 lead. Could they hang on?

The lanky lefty, Wes Sarsland, got the starting nod and threw well. He pitched six innings while giving up two runs. Vinkemeier started the seventh inning with a 5-2 lead and preserved the victory after yielding two runs and stranding the tying run at second base. Matt Schultz led the way with three hits, including a nearhome run to the fence which he somehow turned into a single. Manager Mike Schultz then coaxed brother Matt into successfully stealing second base, his first successful theft of the year and his first attempted steal since a loss to Cologne last season. Terrio contributed a single and two RBI. Pat Schultz and Aiden Ladd both went 2-for-4 with a run and a double.

Brody Curtiss was greeted by teammates after his three-run home run gave the Belle Plaine Legion team a comfortable lead in the second game of Monday’s (June 26) doubleheader at Tiger Park. Belle Plaine split the two games against Waterville.

Legion Baseball

Tigers Off to Fast Start at 3-1 With a solid foundation of players who have enjoyed success during the high school season, the Belle Plaine American Legion team is off to a good start during its short summer season. The Belle Plaine Legion team has won three of its first four games. The Tigers swept a doubleheader at Montgomery Thursday (June 22) by scores of 11-5 and 5-4. Monday (June 26), Belle Plaine split a doubleheader with Waterville at Tiger Park, falling

in the opener, 4-2, before rallying to win the nightcap, 13-4. The Tigers are employing a youth movement, encouraging most their older players to play for the town team while using the Legion schedule for younger players to gain varsityquality game experience, said Legion coach Jason Ladd. Belle Plaine will be in Arlington tonight (June 28, 6 p.m.) for a doubleheader against Sibley East. The Tigers will be at Tiger Park for a twin bill against Le Sueur-Henderson next Thurs-

day (July 6, 6 p.m.). Belle Plaine will also face St. Peter in a doubleheader. A date for those two games has yet to be finalized. Seeding for the playoffs is scheduled for July 9. The first round of the playoffs begin Friday, July 14 and run through July 16. The Legion district tournament is at Waterville and Montgomery, June 21-23. The American Legion State Tournament is July 27-30 at New London-Spicer.

board can’t continue to outspend its revenue without eventually being forced to make budget cuts. The board also moved forward with an $867,000 lighting project in its buildings. The district will fund the lighting project with a 10-year bond. The bond won’t add any increase to property taxes. The district will use long-term facilities maintenance money included in the existing levy to fund bond payments, said Chuck Keller, the district’s business manager. The new lights are needed because the old lights are wearing out. Most of the florescent lights in the junior-senior high, Chatfield and Oak Crest elementary schools have reached the end of their functional life, Jeff Heine, the district’s director of facilities and maintenance, said. Florescent lights and their ballasts typically last about 10 years, said Heine.

The board approved increases in activity fees at the June 26 meeting. The increases are designed to cover negotiated increases in the costs of coaches and advisors to student activities and sports. The per-student fee for drama, speech and robotics will see the biggest jump. They’ll increase from $65 to $80 in drama and speech, $45 to $80 in robotics. Fees for ninth through 12th grade football will increase from $145 to $150. Fees for all other sports for students in ninth through 12th grades will increase from $110 to $135. The fee for visual arts will remain at $50. The fee to use the weight room has been eliminated. The board also left the family maximum for families with up to three students in activities and sports unchanged. Vandermark said the board had negotiated two sets of increases in the pay coaches and advisors receive since the last time the board approved an increase in activity fees. Families on reduced meal service will pay half the fee. Families on no-cost meal service will pay no fee for participation in activities and athletics. Bergs said the school would do everything it can to keep fees from preventing a student from participating in an activity or sport.
