School Board Sets Date for Decision on 1-to-1 Computer Plan A year’s worth of discussion, study and debate over a proposal to provide the Belle Plaine School District’s 1,600 students with computers next year will seemingly reach a decision point next month. But no matter which way the school board goes on the $1 million-plus plan, it assured better service thanks to Scott County’s fiber optic line. Monday night (April 28), the school board unanimously voted to spend $39,125 to extend a fiber optic line from Oak Crest Elementary to the county’s fiber optic line running along Highway 169. The line will then be extended into the fiber optic network serving Belle Plaine JuniorSenior High School, Chatfield Elementary and the District Center. It will replace the microwave signal between Oak Crest and a transmitter atop a light tower at Tiger Park. The district plans might retain the current microwave setup Holding her medal for finishing the 118th Boston Marathon April 21, Amy Malin finished in 3 between the junior-senior high hours, 39 minutes and 35 seconds. school and Oak Crest as a backup in case the fiber line is ever accidentally severed, Superintendent Kelly Smith said after Monday’s board meeting. The $1.1 million proposal is to provide all 1,600 of the district’s students an iPad mini tablet for use, beef up the district’s wireless network and provide additional staffing to support the investment. The price tag for the investment could be reduced if the board decides not every students will be included in the plan. The district is planning over $100,000 in additional personnel next year. The equipment investment comes in around $1.07 million after money from the technology budget is used. April Showers Adding Up April showers bring May flowers but this year they’re delaying the planting of crops. According to the USDA, only about 4 percent of the state’s corn crop had been planted as of Monday, which is 26 percentage points behind the fiveyear average. That’s because fields across the state have been too wet to work, including the Belle Plaine area. Small grain planting is also well behind schedule.

According to the Scott County rain gauge on the Ewald and Adella Gruetzmacher farm in Belle Plaine, a little over 6 inches of rain has fallen since April 12, including 1.97 inches on Sunday and 1.18 on Monday. More was coming down Tuesday (.08 inches as of 11 a.m.). The USDA reports that the recent rainfall has allowed topsoil and subsoil moisture levels to improve significantly.

From Miller Park Back to Tiger Park With a little ingenuity and some scrap, members of the Belle Plaine Public Works Department were able to temporarily transform Tiger Park into “Miller” Park in honor of Johnny Miller, who happened to be grooming the field as the new Tiger Park scoreboard was being installed Friday. Once the top section of the scoreboard was in place, the crew removed the added material to correctly read Tiger Park, the longtime name of the complex. Miller has been active in Belle Plaine baseball for many years, from being a player to a manager to field groomer.

New Downtown Business Opens This Weekend

Color Me Vintage, a new Belle Plaine business, will hold its grand opening this Saturday, May 3 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. at 122 North Meridian Street downtown. The owner, Michaela Smith of Belle Plaine, said Color Me Vintage “is not just another antique store, but rather an upbeat vintage boutique and gift store specializing in the sale of re-purposed home decor, ranging from homemade hand scrubs to up-cycled mason jars to furniture and wall decor. Smith said she obtains her products from various sources, including auctions and local picking. She then brings those items “back to life. She also supports local crafters that have a handmade vintage touch by helping them grow their business through the store. Smith graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stout Chatfield Elementary School kindergartners performed sev- Thursday. I have seen firsthand how difficult starting a new business can be, but I’m up for the challenge, said Smith, adding that she sees a market for a vintage boutique home decor establishment in Belle Plaine. Smith said Color Me Vintage will be open just two weekends a month to start out and expand hours from there. Her job at Cambria is one reason Smith is opening Color Me Vintage. “Working at Cambria inspired me to start my own business. They started out small and continued to grow to what they are today and are still growing. I value the way Cambria supports its local community and I hope that someday the community can say the same about my business.

In its first day back in session following the Easter-Passover Break, the Minnesota Senate’s work included passing three bills authored by Belle Plaine’s representative in the Senate, Sen. Kevin Dahle, DFL-Northfield. Dahle’s “Hit-and-Run bill passed on a 45-16 vote as a stand-alone bill. The Senate also approved two provisions in its E-12 Education Omnibus Policy bill on special education caseloads and an interstate compact on educational opportunity for military children. If Gov. Dayton signs the bill into law, drivers will be asked to stop and “reasonably investigate what was struck in instances where a driver knows or has reason to believe a collision

occurred. Under current statute, a driver does not have to stop and investigate what was hit in a crash if they do not know that it was a person or vehicle. Along with several allies, including the Minnesota County Attorneys Association, the Minnesota Sheriffs Association, Minnesotans for Safe Driving, Mothers Against Drunk Drivers (MADD), the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota, and the Minnesota Alliance on Crime, Dahle made closing this loophole one of his priorities for the 2014 session. Prior to the passage of the hitand-run legislation, the Minnesota Senate passed its E-12 Education Omnibus Policy bill which included two of Dahle’s early priorities of the 2014 session. Both sections of the bill

are focused on relieving undue burdens for children and their families. The first provision will allow the commissioner of education to make changes recommended by the Special Education Caseloads Task Force. The Senate’s legislation also included language designed to help ease barriers for children of military families. Children whose parent or parents actively serve in the armed forces face frequent moves and school district changes across state lines, Dahle said. By adopting the Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunity for Military Children, Minnesota students and their families will join those of 46 other states as they receive help with enrollment, placement and attendance, eligibility, and graduation.

Farmers Market Corner Welcome to Spring! The Belle Plaine Farmers Market opens May 7. We will be located at Court Square every Wednesday through Oct. 15 from 3:30-6:30 p.m., rain or shine. We have great news for vendors! The first time you set up this year is FREE! After that, the cost will be $10 a month or you can reserve a spot for the season for just $50. It’s a heck of a deal. Tell your friends, family and neighbors – we need vendors. We accept vendors selling homegrown and/or homemade products. Come once, come for a month when the tomatoes are in abundance or come for

the year. We would love to have new faces at the market. News is, there’s been some early planting with high hopes. Lettuce, spinach, radishes and peas have early sprouts in some gardens. Of course, there’s plenty of time for planting but the early stuff can go in once you turn the soil. Rhubarb and asparagus are making appearances above ground. Hopefully by May 7 we’ll have early crops. In any case there’s always Jan and Bev baking up goodness and they’ve already reserved their spot so we know they’ll be there. Get ready for May 7 because the farmers market is back!

School Board Sets Date for Decision on 1-to-1 Computer Plan (continued from page 1) all proposal, Smith said, could come from a blend of existing revenue, current levy authority or a voter-approved levy. Providing iPad minis to every junior and senior high school student and continuing to provide iPads to elementaryschoolers via carts could cut the $723,000 the district would spend possibly in half. Regardless of how many students receive the iPad mini tablets, the district would still have to invest over $300,000 in improvements to its overall wireless system, the superintendent said. The overall investment could effectively use up the district’s $1.8 million unreserved fund balance, a fund the board can use to pay for most any of the district’s needs. But Smith promised increased efficiencies and spending reductions that will minimize the hit to the unreserved fund.

Improved Education? How?

Director Matt Lenz again raised concern over how the district will use the devices to improve education. Lenz supports the technology initiative, but wants value for the investment. Smith said teachers can use the devices to keep students more engaged in their daily work. He pointed to a presentation Natalie Nelson, a high school language arts teacher, made to the board last month. She uses NearPod – an application that allows a teacher to see in real time whether students properly understand and apply daily lessons. “That’s just one example,” Smith said. Board members are also concerned about students spending too much time each day looking into screens. But Giesen noted adults spend much of their workdays looking into computer screens. He said teachers would have to make sure the “screen time” is time well used. In other action at the April 28 meeting, the Bellle Plaine School Board: • Paid bills totaling $1,374,941.58.

Cologne Facing Building, Computer Worries That Can’t Wait Recently, I was watching a DVD collection of a long running BBC television show called “As Time Goes By”. It is a wonderful old comedy/romance series starring Judy Dench and Geoffrey Palmer. It is fun to watch every now and then. At one point in the series, Lionel, one of the main characters comes home from the library with a stack of books. When asked about the sudden interest in reading, he answered that he had decided to read all of the books that he thought he knew the story, but never actually read. In that stack he had “Moby Dick”, “Tom Sawyer”, “Winnie the Pooh” and other titles. I suspect that we all have an unofficial list of books like that. We may have seen a movie that was based on the book or was a parody of a famous book. Other books have been discussed so often that they seem familiar, even though we have never picked one up ourselves. If you used “Cliff Notes” to fake your way through required reading in high school or college, you might be able to add a few more books to that unread book list. When Lionel said it in the show, it was initially a funny concept. After it took time to sink in, that comment had a certain amount of reality in it. If you are looking for a reading project, this may be a way to carve out a goal for yourself. Read those books that you think you know and learn what you missed by not actually reading them. You may know the story, but have no appreciation for the author’s style of writing. You can know the story without understanding the mood of the characters as the story plays out. At a minimum, make a list of those books that fit Lionel’s description. It might be fun just to see the list. With some extra effort, you may decide to do some reading from the list. We are eager to help you. Bring in your list and we can send you home with a stack of good reading. Cologne city councilors are facing a pair of high priority challenges to vital equipment needing repair right away. Monday (April 21), Mayor Matt Lein reported city’s public works building on Louis Street needs urgent repairs to the roof. A tour of the roof and building last Friday indicated gaps as big as 1½ inches between the membrane roof and the walls on three sides of the building. The problem was discovered when a crew from Vos Construction of Green Isle was on site repairing windows. The separation of the membrane roof from the walls allows rain water and melted snow to run down into the block walls. Lein, who toured the building Friday, indicated concern that over time the water could deteriorate the mortar holding the block walls together. “There’s a lot of expensive equipment stored in that building,” City Administrator John Hendel said. The council OK’d staff inviting construction contractors to visit the building, inspect the roof and walls and offer the city a quote on the repairs. Based on the quote the city has to repair

American Legion Auxiliary News

the roof over the fire station later this summer, Lein loosely guess the repairs on the public works building could run from $40,000 to $60,000. That’s money the city did not include in the 2014 budget. The city does have approximately $537,000 in a building fund. Hendel will have construction contractors look at the building as soon as possible. He’s hoping to have quotes for the council at its first meeting in May. Once it has the quotes, the council can discuss how it wants to proceed. The city bought the building and the 3½ acres it sits on from Carver County for $168,000 in December of 2003.

Computer Concerns

The council was also informed Microsoft is nolonger supporting the XP operating system running several city computers with security updates. The Microsoft XP operating system runs the computers at Cologne City Hall plus the city’s public works building, the wastewater treatment plant and fire station. The end of security updates makes those computers vulnerable to viruses and malware, Hendel said. If Cologne’s computers were infected and unable to operate, it could prevent the city from completing water billing, accessing records and other essential services. It could also also impact e-mails the city sends out through those computers. The city has eight computers running Windows XP and a few others using the more recent operating system, Microsoft Windows 7. Microsoft announced several months ago it would no longer support Windows XP with security updates. The company

supported the operating system for over a decade. The council is considering a quote from TechStar of Norwood Young America to upgrade the operating systems of all eight computers for $6,398.72. TechStar is the city’s information technology (IT) provider. Councilor Jeff McInnis wanted a second or third quote with the hope receiving a better price on upgraded operating system software. “I’m just hesitant taking the first bid for something we get because it isn’t always the best bid,” he said. But TechStar won’t work on anything it doesn’t sell to the city, Hendel said. Councilor Scott Williams took issue with TechStar. He believes the company is effectively holding the city “hostage” when it comes to firms the city does business with. The council agreed to update the operating systems on all eight computers but also to seek quotes from other firms. In other action at the April 21 meeting, the Cologne City Council: • Paid bills totaling $66,061.61. • Granted the Cologne Lions Club’s request for a temporary lawful gambling permit for July 26 (during Glad Days). • OK’d applications for liquor licenses from four businesses in the city. • Accepted a $6,860.91 grant from the Alvin and Viola Johnson Fund to the Cologne Fire Department. • Decided against active participation in National Night Out (Tuesday, Aug. 5) because of the proximity to Glad Days the last week of July and the Firehouse Drive-in in early August.

Thirty Years Ago This Week

grain elevator was torn down and the site cleared. The disappearance of the last elevator reflected the changing trend in farm crops in the area. Once a wheat-raising community, the locality had almost ceased to be a wheat-growing section. At one time Belle Plaine had four grain elevators in operation. An extensive job was underway at St. Peter and Paul’s Church with the removal of the entire roof shingles. The old slate shingles were being replaced by asbestos slate shingles. Herman Gennrich, prominent aged farmer of Benton Township, died at the age of 87. The VFW Post and Auxiliary held their installation of officers. The president of the auxiliary was Velma Otto and the commander was Oliver Rucks.

90 Years Ago (1924)

Junior Great Bookers Fourteen Belle Plaine Elementary School students completed a 12-session reading program in 1984 called Junior Great Books. They were back row, from left, Denise Koepp, Erin Fahey, Carol Schmidt, Michelle Ahrens and Karla Fabel. In the middle row are Cindy Berger, Carrie Nordeen, Robin Yahnke, Shelly Fogarty and Michelle Gransee. In the front row are Jon Ploetz, Troy Jacobson, Mary Claire Siegler and Julie Pint. Belle Plaine was struck by a winter blast of high winds, sleet and snow, which left hundreds of farmers without electricity. The storm occurred on Sunday night, April 29. A heavy coating of ice on power lines was the main culprit across the area. Cable television companies interested in providing their services to the city of Belle Plaine were required to submit their proposals to City Administrator David Unmacht by 2 p.m. that coming Thursday. Unmacht said he was expecting to receive three to five proposals. The Belle Plaine Cable Board was scheduled to meet May 14 to decide how to proceed with the proposals. The Belle Plaine Development Corporation planned to hold an open meeting on May 9 at the Civic Center. Anyone interested in joining was urged to attend. Directors would be chosen and future plans discussed. The purpose of the organization was to expand the community’s industrial base. Fire totally destroyed the 25year-old barn owned by Eldon and Nellie Jones on Raven Road four miles south of Belle Plaine. The barn contained straw and three sheep. It was believed that one of the sheep pulled down a trouble light hanging in the barn and it caused the straw to catch on fire. Scott County clerical, social and human services workers voted to go on strike if they did not reach a contract settlement with the county by May 3. Eighty-five union members cast a vote that week, 98 percent of whom were in favor of the action. A strike would involve 150 people. The organ consisting of over 1,500 pipes was completed and ready for use at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. The organ, which had 31 ranks of pipes, three manuals (levels of keyboards) and foot pedals, had an initial construction cost of $32,000 when it was started in 1968. A presentation concert would be held at the church on Sunday, May 6. A New Prague boy, Michael James McConnell, 16, died after his motorcycle was involved in a head-on collision with a car on Highway 13 just north of St. Patrick.

Michael O’Connor, 100, passed away at the Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine on April 29. He was born to John and Ellen (Lucy) O’Connor in Belle Plaine Township. He married Elizabeth Weiers. After farming in Belle Plaine Township until 1930, he opened a restaurant in Belle Plaine and operated it until 1982. Michael J. Plonski, 89, passed away at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home on April 28. Virgil H. Herrmann, 67, of Belle Plaine, passed away April 27. Mr. Herrmann was born March 14, 1917 in rural Norwood. He married Renata Bergmann on June 29, 1941 in Emanuel Lutheran Church, Hamburg. He was a Watkins products salesman in the Belle Plaine area for 39 years. Henry E. Wolter, 79, a resident of the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home, passed away April 29. Mr. Wolter was born Oct. 31, 1904 in Schweimke, West Germany. In 1924, he immigrated to the United States. He married Ruth Scott on Oct. 22, 1935. They farmed in San Francisco Township. The Belle Plaine High School baseball team split two games, losing to Arlington-Green Isle 5-4 before rebounding with an 11-9 victory over conferenceleading Jordan 11-9. Jeff Fogarty, Phil Hennen, Paul Hennen and Paul Jeffrey were among the offensive leaders against Jordan. The Tiger softball defeated Jordan 6-5 and Waterville 14-4. A big two-run hit by Melissa Malz in the seventh inning keyed the victory against Jordan. The BPHS girls’ track and field tem won the Delano Relays and then placed second at a seven-team meet in Le Center. Winning their individual events at Le Center for the Tigers were Laurie Wolpern (high jump and 400-meter dash), Pam Farrar (100 dash) and Sara Riesgraf (100 hurdles). The Belle Plaine town baseball team won its season opener over Cologne 15-5. Terry Knop had two doubles, a home run and five RBI for the Tigers. Teammate Ken Solheid contributes two doubles, two singles and three RBI.

60 Years Ago (1954)

Mrs. W.S. O’Connell, native of St. Thomas, died in her sleep at her home in New Prague, to which place she and her husband had retired. She was 91 years old. A surprise birthday party was tendered to Wilmer Gruetzmacher at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Gruetzmacher Sr. Two-hundred people joined in a search party that was looking for the 4-year-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Maloney (Quinn), who disappeared from their farm home in Jessenland. Mrs. Pat Collins found the child asleep under a tree at her home in Jessenland. The marriage of Miss Ramona Buckley to Richard P. Steen, son of Mrs. Alma Steen, took place in Minneapolis. It was an unusual May scene. The moisture was welcomed but the snow and cold held on for a week. At the 2nd District VFW meeting at Mapleton, Mrs. Lillian Fairweather was appointed and installed as 2nd District Historian for the coming year. A large number of relatives and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Norbert Michel to help them celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. “Best senior class play ever staged here” was the expression of many after witnessing the very pleasing “Seventeen” at the high school. Lee Lynch and Janet Mahoney were outstanding in their parts. It was a triumph for coach-director Harold Albrecht. Mrs. Joseph Blaha departed for Nuremberg, Germany, for her first visit with family and friends in nearly seven years. The Belle Plaine Motor Co., Fred M. Tillquist, observed its silver anniversary. On May 8, 1929, Mr. Tillquist started in business in Belle Plaine and made a fine success of his enterprise. Mr. and Mrs. A.G. DeLaere observed their 15th wedding anniversary at their home near Assumption with a gathering of relatives. Mary Stoppelmann and Barbara Wilson were the honor students of Belle Plaine High School’s graduating class of 1954. Mary was named valedictorian and Barbara was salutatorian. Relatives and friends helped Darlene Sellnow celebrate her birthday. Miss Bette Pint, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Math Pint Jr., became the bride of Lambert Hoffman, son of Mrs. Hoffman of St. Benedict. Dear Editor, The Scott County Board of Commissioners is currently considering adopting a 1/2 cent sales tax for transportation and transit projects. I am encouraging you to support the increase and urging you to contact the commissioner in your district to do likewise. You can express your opinion by going to the Scott County website and searching for the topic "peak democracy". I am a life-long resident of Scott County, and I have benefitted from past efforts to maintain a suitable transportation system in our county. Belle Plaine in particular should be able to benefit from such a tax as we are looking for funds to improve our town's access to Highway 169. In addition, as a retiree, I am becoming more interested in the various transit offerings becoming available in the metro-area. As you are probably aware, there is quite a tide of seniors growing in Scott County who are looking for better transit choices. Yours truly, Chuck Perkins, Belle Plaine

Father James Burns will be here at St. Thomas to say Mass on May 11 at 9 a.m., Mother’s Day. A Memorial Day Mass at St. Thomas is again this year Monday, May 26 at 9 a.m. with Father Roger Hessian. We’re counting our blessings. The Mass schedule at St. Ann’s is Saturdays at 5:15 p.m., on Sundays 8 and 10:30 a.m. Dick O’Connell attended with fellow Ancient Order of Hibernians as they celebrated Founder’s Day in Jessenland on Saturday. Mass, social, entertainment, dinner and musical entertainment by the Tim Malloy’s at Edgewood Farm, just southwest of the St. Thomas Jessenland Church. A large crowd attended. Katelyn Rose, daughter of Paul and Tammy Sirek, received the Sacrament of First Holy Communion at St. Wenceslaus on Sunday. Katelyn is a granddaughter of Dick and Carol Jean O’Connell. The 37th annual Le Sueur County Pioneer Power Swap Meet was held last Friday and Saturday, Sunday was a washout with the rain. Out and about were Davie Connelly, Billy Joe Brown, Gary and Shirley Rutt, Jimmy, Bruce and Cathy, Aaron, Deb and Grace Halloran, Dan, Pat and Kay Burns, Joe and Ellie Doherty, and Johnny Callahan. Jim Walker was so excited with the present he “purchased for Mary” … a pulley? A pulley! Hope Mary is just as excited with her gift as Jim was. The invitation, compiled by three of Grace Hallorans’s granddaughters, says it all. “What woman do you know who: was born at home in 1900, grew up with the luxuries of the time, married and moved to a new farm house that had no running water, no indoor plumbing? She did all her cooking on a wood stove, and her house was heated by wood. She had no refrigeration, got her milk from the cow and eggs from the coop. She used her porch as a freezer in the winter and the well as a cooler in the summer. She grew and canned enough vegetables to feed her family for a year. She gave birth to her children at her parent’s home, drove a team of horses, lived through the depression and prayed her four sons through military service.” Other women of this time period did, but this day

(May 5, 1898- March 01, 1987) and Grace Schoell Halloran (4/27/1900-December 4, 1974) were married on August 21, 1923 at Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Grace grew up in the prestigious Schoell House in Belle Plaine. John and Grace made their home in “a new house” on the farm where Jim and Mary Jean Halloran presently live, one mile west of the farm John grew up, on Bruce and Cathy Halloran’s farm. John and Grace’s Halloran family consisted of seven children, John A. (Oct 20, 1924), Edward (October 10, 1926-November 17, 2012), Ruth (December 17, 1930), Joe (March 20, 1933-February 11, 2006), James (August 7, 1935), Doris (February 12, 1938) and Mary Louise (September 28, 1939). Halloran women attended a luncheon in honor of the 114th birthday of Grace Schoell Halloran held at Dangerfield’s on Sunday, April 27. The family refers to the celebration as “A Day Of Grace”. They shared many interesting memories, photos, stories, memorabilia including her lovely wedding dress and shoes. Grace’s grandchildren organized a cookbook with family photos and planned the party. Daughters, granddaughters, great-granddaughters and in-laws of John P. and Grace’s family enjoyed the memorable event. Not known to ever miss a good time, a few Halloran men, Jim, John A. “Tar”, and Dr. Tim, enjoyed the gathering as well. Hallorans have been living on the northeast side of St. Thomas and making the news since “Old Johnny” showed up here close to 170 years ago, and they still are. Tom Halloran, Ed and Denise’s youngest lad, was confirmed on Saturday at St. Dominic’s in Northfield. Tom is one of John P. and Grace’s great-grandchildren. Congratulations Tom. The ‘Food for Kidz’ packaging event happens Thursday, May 1 at the Lonsdale Civic Center. Greetings to Dave Edberg of Belle Plaine. He enjoyed the Easter Mass at St. Thomas. April showers bring May flowers… or floods… or snow.. Have a good one, folks.

Minnesota Legislature to allow his wife to fulfill her professional goals. Serving as a part-time county commissioner, if elected, will allow Beard, a six-term state representative, to represent the community while seeking other professional opportunities, the Shakopee Valley News recently reported. Beard said he will not miss the daily commute to St. Paul and the intensely partisan atmosphere at the capital. After a long career as a sheriff’s deputy and serving a term as county sheriff, Menden vowed he would also serve two terms. He was first elected to the county board in 2010, defeating incumbent Commissioner Jerry Hennen by 9 percent, and then volunteered to run for a twoyear term after redistricting.

Ben Wagner, Aaron Bigaouette, Hankins and Dauwalter were the other major offensive contributors. Tigers 9, Mayer Lutheran 7 The Tigers, sparked by a fiverun first inning, had a 9-1 lead before the Crusaders scored six runs in the final inning to make the final score as close as it was. “We played 11 very good innings of baseball today but the one bad one almost cost us a game, Schultz said. “We need to work on keeping the pressure and focus on until the very end of the game. We had some big days for several guys but Colton Hentges had a great day that really contributed to our victories. He reached base in both his at-bats and scored four runs and stole a base as a courtesy runner. Having guys ready to go when called upon and impacting the game when needed is what will help us reach our goals as the season progresses. “Our pitcher, Ben Wagner, settled in very nicely and cruised through six strong innings to hold Mayer to one run, Schultz continued. “We did a better job of keeping the pressure on this game and extending the lead and scored runs in four of our six chances. Unfortunately, we needed all those runs as Mayer Lutheran took advantage of some sloppy defense in the top of the seventh to score six runs. Ladd, who started the seventh inning in relief of Wagner, allowed six unearned runs on three hits before leaving the mound with only one out. Jon Vinkemeier, a sophomore making his first varsity appearance, came on to strike out two and earn the save. Dahlke had a huge day at the plate with a double, home run, four RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored. Other offensive leaders were Bigaouette (two hits including a double, a RBI and two runs scored); Dauwalter (a home run, two RBI and one run scored); Emmers (one hit and two stolen bases); Wagner (one double); and Ladd (one double). Contributing one hit apiece were Hentges, Schumacher, Hankins and Dylan O’Brien. 2014 BPHS Baseball Results and Remaining Schedule Apr. 8 vs. St. Peter W 10-6 Apr. 10 vs. NYA W 8-4 Apr. 12 Belle Plaine Tourney vs. Paynesvi W 10-9 vs. Minnehaha L 3-2 Apr. 15 vs. W-M W 10-0 Apr. 21 vs. TCU W 2-1 Apr. 22 at New Ulm L 7-2 Apr. 25 vs. Mayer L. Congratulations to Jenna Gatz (10th) and Zach Bahr (12th) for being selected to participate in the Hamline Elite Track Meet this past Friday. The meet features the top competitors from Class A and AA schools from across the state in each track and field event. On one of the few nice weather days this spring, Jenna places 5th in the 400 M Dash and Zach placed 9th in the Triple Jump. Congratulations to both of you on your outstanding performances. Our Junior-Senior Prom is this Saturday night with the Grand March beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the South Gym. Following the Grand March, participants will travel to the Community Center in Arlington for their meal and for the dance. At the conclusion of the dance, the Post Prom Party will take place at Borough Bowl. Thanks to all of our parents who donate their time and effort to make the Post Prom Party occur each and every year. This is a great option for our students to have a great time in a safe environment. Drive safely this weekend everyone! As we approach the month of May, music concerts fill our school calendars. Here is a listing of various concerts during this last month of school: May 9 & 10 – Pops Concert at 7 p.m.; May 12 – 5th & 6th grade band concert at Oak Crest at 7 p.m.; May 19 – 7-12 Choir Concert at 7 p.m.; May 28 – 7-12 Band Concert in the Park at 6 p.m. At our school board meeting last night, the board adopted a revised school calendar making adjustments for the closures and the make up days that we have had this past year. In the end (at least I hope it is the end!), we had six days missed due to cold and/or snowy conditions. We made up two days with students, our staff have made up two days and will be making up two more days in professional development activities during the spring and summer. As we finish out the school year with our remaining calendar, we will surpass the number of required hours of instruction for each grade level and will not need to make up any further days. All students will have Thursday, June 5th as the last day of instruction. Teachers will have their last day on June 6th and Graduation will take place on Sunday, June 8th at 2 p.m. to conclude our school year. Let’s all hope our weather is a little more cooperative for our 2014-2015 school year. In St. Paul, our legislators work to conclude the 2014 session. Both the House and the Senate have approved their individual education bills and the conference committee is now working to try and find a compromise position between the two bills. I am hopeful that the conference committee will accept a final bill that is closer to the House bill as the House bill provides an additional 1% of general education revenue to all Minnesota school districts in addition to supporting funding for school lunch programs and for early learning programs. As always, if you have any questions about school matters, please feel free to call me at 873-2400 or check our website at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us. You may also find me on Twitter at @BPTiger716. ers pass a transportation bill including a provision potentially pulling Scott and Carver counties into the Counties Transit Investment Board (CTIB), a board dealing with transit. The proposed bill includes the potential of an additional 1 percent sales tax hike with much of the money going toward metro area transit operations outside Scott County. County commissioners are concerned of being forced into CTIB and are also leery of enacting a ½ cent tax for transportation on top of the proposed 1 percent CTIB tax. Both of Belle Plaine’s lawmakers – Rep. Kelby Woodard, R-Belle Plaine, and Sen. Kevin Dahle, DFL-Northfield -- are opposed to Scott County being forced to join CTIB. They might even wait until after the November elections to see if DFLers retain control of the House of Representatives. Commissioner Joe Wagner of Sand Creek Township, Belle Plaine’s representative on the board, supports waiting. Wag-

But she found the hotels were over-booked and airline prices were “crazy high.” Knowing she could run in the 2014 Boston Marathon, Malin decided to wait a year. The two bombs went off at approximately 4 hours and 9 minutes into the race. Malin thinks she might have still been in the area had she made the trip. She has since made friends that ran the 2013 race. She learned “they didn’t go out and celebrate (that night). They sat in their hotel rooms wondering and worrying,” she said. “They were robbed of their victory.” Malin is celebrating her victory over the Boston Marathon. Tigers Win Three Straight by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School softball team last week went from a three-game losing skid to a three-game winning streak with a Minnesota River Conference victory over Tri-City United on Tuesday and wins over Sibley East and New RichlandHartland-Ellendale-Geneva to capture Saturday’s NRHEG Tournament. Due to poor weather, Thursday’s game at Mayer Lutheran was postponed until May 15, and this past Monday’s game against Blue Earth Area was cancelled. The Tigers were scheduled to take on Jordan Tuesday but that game was postponed. Next Up is a home game against MRC-leading Norwood Young America 5 p.m. this Thursday. Tigers 9, Tri-City United 6 The Tigers overcome a pair of two-run homers by the Titans in the top of the seventh inning with a five-run outburst in the bottom of the inning for a dramatic 9-6 victory last Tuesday in Belle Plaine. Tailing 6-4 heading into its final at-bat, Belle Plaine strung together several hits, capped off by a walk-off three-run home run by Maddi Lark. “It was nice to see the fight and we finally had that spark that we saw so much of last year,” said Tigers coach Jeremy Kalal. “We had five girls that all came up big with clutch hits, capped off by the big three-run homer to finish it off. We went from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs. Hopefully this will give our team the attitude it they needed to reclaim.” Belle Plaine had 10 hits in the game. Kaitlyn Rathe and Kaylee Hentges both had two hits and two RBI to go along with Lark’s blast. Maddie Haller also had two hits, while Kenzie Koepp, Kate Schmit and Hailey Witt accounted for the other two hits. Koepp had one RBI. “Our bats finally came alive and we started taking some better swings as the game went along,” Kalal said. “We were far from perfect and we definitely didn’t play to my expectations, but the girls fought hard and didn’t give up – and it paid off in a big way.” Haller pitched the first six innings for Belle Plaine, allowing nine hits, five runs (four earned)

America before heading to Watertown-Mayer next Monday for a 7 p.m. start. New Ulm 7, Tigers 2 The Tigers dug themselves a big hole in New Ulm early last Tuesday, one that was too deep to crawl out of as the host Eagles went on to a five-run win. Belle Plaine had five errors and New Ulm none. “We gave up five runs in the first two innings and we never recovered,” said Belle Plaine coach Pat Schultz. “Our defense was not pretty again as five of the seven runs were unearned. We wanted to get all of our pitchers a little work as we head into a stretch with two doubleheaders in four days. They did a nice job throwing strikes but we didn’t make the plays behind them. Offensively, we never got in a groove and gave away a few at-bats for the first time all year.” Joe Hankins started on the hill for the Tigers and absorbed the loss after allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits and one walk in one inning of work. Gavin Dauwalter came on in relief in the second inning and allowed two runs (none earned) on one hit and a walk. The other Belle Plaine pitchers (one inning apiece) were Cameron Lark, Tyler Schumacher, Aiden Ladd and Nick Johnson. The Tigers scored both their runs in the sixth inning via a two-run double by Ladd. Belle Plaine’s only other three hits came from Hankins, Derek

Dahlke and Chase Emmers. “This was our first road game of the year and we didn’t get off the bus ready to play,” Schultz said. “We need to get better at being ready at the start of the game no matter who or where we are playing. We are a third of the way through the season and we need to start doing the little things better if we hope to make the run that we want to.” Tigers 10, Mayer Luth. 0 Belle Plaine returned to the friendly confines of Tiger Park for a MRC twin bill against Mayer Lutheran Friday and the bats were there as the Tigers swept the Crusaders 10-0 and 9-7. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Thursday but was pushed back a day due to rain. The Tigers scored eight runs in the first inning and two more in the fourth to eventually end the game early via the 10-run rule. Pitchers Chase Emmers and Hankins combined on a twohit shutout, the former pitching the first two innings and the latter the last three. Both allowed one hit and had three strikeouts apiece. “Both attacked the zone and let our fielders make plays,” Schultz said. Emmers had a double and two RBI. He also stole a base and scored a run. Dahlke added two hits and a RBI and scored a run.

Town Team Baseball

Tigers Open at Home Friday by Brett Kruschke, Mike and Matt Schultz After falling one win short of the grand prize last year, the Tiger town baseball team begins another season of hardball Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers will host the St. Benedict Saints in a first-round rematch of last year’s state tournament and as an added bonus, it will be Dollar Dog Night. Make sure to arrive early as the locals will be unveiling their new white pants, which look exactly like the old ones. You may notice several other changes at Tiger Park, including a new scoreboard, new benches in the patio area and a totallyredone mound and home plate. All these changes – and more on the way – have been made in preparation for the 2014 state tournament, which the Tigers will be co-hosting with Jordan (and Le Sueur as the third site) in August and on Labor Day Monday. On Sunday, the Tigers will face a fellow runner-up from last year’s state tourney when they visit their league counterparts, the Class ‘B’ Shakopee Indians. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The Tigers finished last year with a 19-17 record, winning 10 of their last 11 games. Belle Plaine will return almost everyone from that squad and is hoping to make another deep tournament run in its hometown. Returning are Travis Latzke,

Johnny Egan, Derek Dahlke, Dylan Nyberg, Trevor Latzke, Brad Lawson, Josh Terrio, Tyler Hartman, Ryan Diers, Zach Horning, Matt Schultz, Nate Hartmann, Shawn Larson, Dan Huber, Jake Fiedler, Zac Dahlke, Pat Schultz, Ross VanHauen and manager Mike Schultz. Newcomers include Jordan Johnson, Jacob Meger, Zach Juaire, Jesse Oelfke and brothers August and Damitrus Farrruggia. There could also be a few others that answer Momma Tiger’s winsome call before all is said and done. The Tigers are in the Central Division of the River Valley League, which will again send three teams to the Class ‘C’ state tournament. The RVL is made up of the same 10 Class ‘C’ teams and five Class ‘B’ teams from last year. For the first time in a smattering of blood moons, the singlegame price for an adult ticket will increase from $3 to $4, with students and seniors remaining at $2. This, however, means that the $25 season ticket – for 15 home games – is an even better deal than it was before. And for those who would also like a hot dog and beverage at each game with their season ticket, the $50 Dugout Club pass awaits. Finally, remember to follow amateur baseball via Twitter: the Minnesota Baseball Association (@MinnBaseball), the River Valley League (@RVLbaseball), the Belle Plaine Ti-

gers (@bptigertown) and new over the offseason, this summer’s state tournament hosts (@BPJordan2014). Both the boys’ and girls’ teams had meets scheduled for Tuesday that were postponed due to weather (see accompanying schedules for most recent updates).

Belle Plaine Police Dept. to Hold Mock Crash Near High School This Friday

Friday was the Biggest Day The first day (Friday) was definitely the best at this past weekend’s 37th annual Le Sueur County Pioneer Power Swap Meet and Flea Market. With temperatures near 60 degrees, Friday had by far the best weather, followed by Saturday and then Sunday, the latter of which was basically a complete washout. An estimated 10,000 to 12,000 people attended on Friday. This young group was among them, and the look on the woman’s face goes to show that you never know what you’re going to find at the event, which is one of the largest of its kind in the nation.

Two Finalists Named for City Administrator Job Two finalists have been named for Belle Plaine’s city administrator job. According to Mayor Mike Pingalore, they are Ron Moorse and Crystal Prentice. Moorse served as interim city administrator in Afton from April 2010 to February 2011 and returned to the job in February 2012. Before coming to Afton, Moorse served as city admin-

istrator in Arden Hills for two years, city administrator in Orono for 16 years and as assistant to the city manager in Roseville for 10 years. Prentice was appointed city manager for Waseca in January 2008. Prior to joining the city of Waseca, she worked as the city administrator in St. Charles. She also worked as the Neighborhood Programs administra-

tor in Chandler, Ariz., and as a Neighborhood Outreach coordinator and management assistant for the city of Mesa, Ariz. Pingalore said the city council will likely decide between Moorse and Prentice at next Monday’s regular meeting. The city administrator job in Belle Plaine has been vacant since David Murphy’s release last August. Murphy had held

the job for nearly 10 years. The salary range for the city administrator job in Belle Plaine, depending on qualifications, is $74,356 to $100,485 with “a highly competitive benefit package.” Murphy’s salary at the time of his departure was $98,485.

The Belle Plaine Police Department doesn’t want the class of 2012 going out in a crash. Officers are conducting a mock crash at the intersection of Park and Elk streets this Friday at 12:45 p.m. The mock crash aims to send a hard-hitting reminder of the dangers and consequences of unsafe driving behaviors — such as drinking and driving and not buckling up — prior to prom and the end of the school year. The BPPD is also using the event to remind parents, grandparents and caregivers about the importance to talk with their teen to reinforce teen driving laws, and to set their own family driving rules. The mock crash uses real crashed vehicles set up on school grounds and student participants to dramatically act out roles as crash victims. The school’s junior and senior student body will watch the demonstration and learn how emergency responders conduct rescue efforts in real-time. Also participating are the Belle Plaine Fire Department, Stier Transportation, John’s Mobil, Kolden Funeral Home, North Memorial Air Care, Minnesota State Patrol and Ridgeview Medical Center. “Mock crashes are an effective presentation to educate teenagers about the true consequences of poor driving decisions,” says Belle Plaine Police Officer Brian Vycital “When students see their friends and peers carried out on in body bags, and another being handcuffed, it hits home. It’s a strong message that aims to influence their driving choices, especially at such a potentially dangerous time on the road.” Important Role of Parents and Safe Teen Driving The Belle Plaine Police Department is urging parents to talk to their teen about the dangers and consequences of

underage drinking and encourage them to always buckle up to keep them safe. Vycital says parents should also reinforce teen driving laws such as belt use, passenger limitations, nighttime driving, no cell phone use and no texting (including when stopped in traffic). “It is so important that parents talk to their teen drivers and establish rules for the road,” says Vycital “Just because a teen has their license does not mean they are experienced, safe drivers. Parents must stay involved with a teen’s driving just as they do with their grades, athletics and other activities.” ‘Not a Drop’ The state’s “Not a Drop” law says drivers under age 21 cited for consuming any amount of alcohol will lose their license from 30 to 180 days, and face up to a $700 fine and 90 days in jail. A citation of this nature will also stay on the driver’s record for 10 years.

Minnesota River Rises Several Feet The Minnesota River rose by about 5 feet between 1 p.m. Saturday and 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. According to its midday report Tuesday, the Minnesota River at Henderson went from about 716.6 feet to 721.6 feet. The flood stage in Henderson is 732 feet. The rains of the past several days has a number of rivers and streams on the rise in the state. However, unless the rains continue heavier than forecast for the rest of the week, no major flooding is expected along the Minnesota River Valley at this time.
