Tyler Moylan has the best view he could ever want. In a month, he’ll trade a college classroom for the vistas of Medicine Bow National Forest west of Cheyenne in southern Wyoming.

Moylan, a 2012 graduate of Belle Plaine High School, spends his summers working for the National Park Service.

He works on a maintenance crew. But that’s just a side job for his real passion – fighting western wildfires.

In his third summer working for the National Parks Service, Moylan is assigned to the Esterbrooks Station within Medicine Bow National Forest. Working at about 6,500 feet above sea level, he is part of a crew of workers that clears trails and performs jobs that makes the park more enjoyable for visitors. In the event of a fire within the park, Moylan and his co-workers switch from maintenance workers to firefighters.

The crew also spends plenty of time performing maintenance on park service and fire fighting equipment as well as training. The work has provided Moylan, 22, the chance to learn

about vehicle maintenance.

He’s more comfortable fixing a chain saw than performing an oil change on a truck.

“I know the basics, that’s about it,” he said.

Moylan isn’t interested in work as a mechanic. He wants to fight fires.

The fire fighting crews work shifts up to 14 days without a break. The days can last up to 16 hours. After 14 days, the crews take a mandatory twoday break and a different crew takes over. He doesn’t dwell on the long hours, knowing his fellow crew members are enduring the same scenario. The job allows Moylan, the son of Annette and Christopher Moylan, to put money away for school and other expenses. He makes $14. When the crew is fighting fire, the wage is bumped by 25 percent.

“Hazard pay,” he said.

Their job is to contain the fire until it either runs out of fuel or Mother Nature provides the needed moisture to squelch the flames. The fires can burn dry timber and land from a few dozen acres to thousands of acres.

Clearing a Fire’s Fuel

A practice some young people seem to view as a harmless exchange between a boy and girl can turn into a lifetime of pain and suffering, destroying reputations, costing people jobs has area law enforcement officers and prosecutors on alert.

Last Wednesday night (March 29) at New Prague High School, Scott County Attorney Ron Hocevar, County Sheriff Luke Hennen, FBI Community Outreach Officer Kathy Hotakainen and Jessica Harstad, a graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy, warned over 100 parents and students of the potential dangers of potentially dangerous uses for smartphones and social media.

They warned parents of the dangers of sexting, an act that begins as an ill-advised exchange of an intimate photograph sent via text message or some form of social media between a girl and boy. But if that image is disseminated to others, that simple act of questionable judgment could easily lead to criminal charges, destroying reputations, humiliation or a felony charge and label of predatory sex offender that could follow a person around for a lifetime.

A child pictured in a sexted image may not think much about it when they are 16 or 18 years old. But when they are 20 and seeking a job, a Google search of their name could bring that long-forgotten photo back to life, Hocevar said.

For a person convicted of distribution of child porn, a court order to register as a sex offender can impact a person’s life for many years, he said.

“This is serious stuff,” Hocevar said. “It’s not fun and games.”

In other business Monday night, the council unanimously approved a request by Harold and Ramona Edberg for a minor subdivision at 326 Ash Street South.

The split of the property will allow for the sale of the existing building addressed as 326 Ash Street South (south of Highway 169) and will create a single 1.14-acre remaining parcel.

The Edbergs are granting a 10foot trail easement (at no cost) on the new parcel adjacent to Enterprise Drive. With the fuel cleared, fires can be more easily contained.

Moylan knows more about weather in the mountains than he ever dreamed he would.

Winters are a time for snow, moisture that will eventually melt and help keep trees and grassy areas from becoming a tinderbox for fires. He’s also learned plenty about judging the winds up in the mountains.

“Weather is huge in our work,” he said.

City Council Awards Bid for Street Improvement Project The Belle Plaine City Council Monday night unanimously awarded the bid for the city’s 2017 street and utility improvement project to Wm. Mueller & Sons of Hamburg (Carver County) at the low base bid of $1,098,853.01, which is almost $100,000 under the engineer’s estimate of $1,106,635.75.

Also approved was an alternate bid by Mueller & Sons for the construction of a trail that will extend along the west side of Meridian Street from the new Enterprise Drive overpass southward to Century Street for an additional cost of $99,382.61, bringing to total cost of both areas of the project to $1,198,235.62. The engineer’s estimate for both the base and alternate bids was $1,202,198.75.

The other combined base and alternate bids received were from OMG Midwest, Inc., formerly Chard Tiling and Excavating, ($1,256,847.70), Quam Construction Company ($1,320,118.30), BCM Construction ($1,487,190.10) and Heselton Construction ($1,606,819.70).

Ridgeview Medical Center (medical clinic and health and wellness center) and The Lutheran Home Association (senior housing facility) are teaming on the project.

Green Isle Hoping to Brew Up New Tenant for Business Park For years, Green Isle City Councilors have longed for the day when a business came asking about land in the city’s business park. Last Tuesday (March 28), council members got the news they had been awaiting.

A small brewery with up about 40 employees is looking for land that best suits its needs.

Gaylord native Mike Goetsch and two partners own it. Their company is interested in a lot in the city’s business park. Mayor Joe Kreger reported the city is promoting two lots of similar size along Shamrock Drive near 365th Avenue. The company needs a lot that can easily handle a 15,000-square-foot building and parking for 40 vehicles. The council expects the building will include a loading dock.

Green Isle is one of a few area communities in the running for the site, Goetsch said Wednesday morning (March 29). He is looking for a site that is a blend of close enough to the Twin Cities to draw master brewers and staff and a location in an exurban area -- commuter towns outside an urban area -- where land is affordable.

The new facility will house a brewing operation. The beer, once ready for consumption, will be trucked from Green Isle into Minneapolis to the company’s taproom near to U.S. Bank Stadium, Kreger said at the March 28 city council meeting.

The city council is recommending its economic development authority support a package of incentives that includes offering Goetsch and his partners one of the two lots (both about 3½-acres) in the business park for $1.

Green Isle is also willing to waive the assessments on either of the two lots. The assessments range from $1,434.89 to $1,663.57. The council also OK’d offering five years of property tax abatement, though council members conceded negotiations may extend the abatement to 10 years. Councilor Diane Brown said, “We’d be fools” not to extend the inducement to hopefully attract Goetsch and his partners to bring the operation to Green Isle.

Kreger expected the city would have to negotiate an economic development package that benefits both the city council and the company. “There should be some back and forth here since we’re giving them the lot for $1,” he said.

The proposed sale of one of two lots for $1 and the property tax abatement would be

accompanied by stipulations a building would be built within a year or two and that the company meet hiring requirements within a similar period of time to receive the incentives, said City Attorney Ross Arneson.

“I’d say we do whatever we can to get them in here,” said Councilor Shawn Harms.

A big hurdle to lure the company to Green Isle is the quality of the city’s water. The company would likely be one of the city’s larger consumers of municipal water. Goetsch and his partners will be testing it to determine if it’s compatible to brewing beer, Kreger said.

“It could stop the project right there,” he said.

News of the company’s potential interest in Green Isle comes at the same time city residents received their tax statements.

Harms complained during the meeting that a larger size house in Waconia has lower city property taxes compared to his house in Green Isle. He said bringing a business to Green Isle like a brewery could help reduce the property tax imbalance between commercial and residential property.

Payments on Lots

The Green Isle City Council is keeping a close eye on payments on the remaining 43 undeveloped residential lots the city sold in 2014 via contract for deed to developers Bill Feldman and Norm Beckman.

The developers owe the city over $11,000 for two missed principal and interest payments for 2016 and the first payment for 2017. The money goes toward the bonds the city issued for infrastructure for the residential land.

The city was told the developers expected an invoice for the regular payments, something the city typically wouldn’t do in a contract for deed scenario, Arneson said. The developers told the city a check is forthcoming.

“It seems to me they’re not taking us very seriously,” said Councilor Mark Wentzlaff.

The property taxes on the lots have been paid, a sign the developers intend to keep the lots, Arneson said. Harms asked about the city’s option. Arneson said the city can give the developers 60 days notice to catch up on the payments. If they have not made the payment following the formal notice, the city will retake ownership, Arneson said.

Wentzlaff wants the council to decide how it will proceed

at the council’s next meeting Tuesday, April 11. “We’ve got to do something,” he said.

But city ownership of the lots would remove the residential property from the property tax rolls. The council wants the lots generating property taxes. The council is also frustrated that, until recently, Feldman and Beckman haven’t put much effort marketing the lots for sale.

“I still think we’re in the best location in the county,” Kreger said.

In other action at the March 28 meeting, the Green Isle City Council: • Paid bills totaling $4,336.28.

• Discussed a closed-door meeting between officials from Green Isle Community School and its financial advisors with two city councilors, the city’s financial advisors and city attorney regarding the amount the school owes the city for missed lease payments. The meeting was scheduled for yesterday (April 4). Kreger said the amount Green Isle said charter school owes the city was inaccurate. He plans to report details of the meeting back to the full council. The payments from the school help fund debt service on a bond the city issued to renovate and reopen the school in 2005.

• Discussed the state of Green Isle’s application for a USDA grant to establish a revolving loan fund for economic development purposes with Amy Newsom, a Sibley County Community Development staffer contracted to work with the city. Newsom said the city’s odds of winning the grant would be better if the city offered additional matching money. The council agreed unanimously to put $5,100 in matching money to potentially win a $10,000 USDA grant. Green Isle won’t be out the $5,100 if its application is declined.

• Discussed possible maintenance to a “Welcome to Green Isle” sign on Highway 5 on the southwest corner of the city.

“It’s looking pretty shabby,” said Councilor Diane Brown.

The city had previously planned to sweep streets annually in the fall.

• Discussed maintenance plans for an alley along Cleveland Street. The city plans to repave the alley. It also has directed that garbage/recycling trucks pick up garbage/recycling on the street and not via the alley, sparing the paved alley the weight of trucks.

Food Shelf Benefits from Community Generosity The Belle Plaine Food Shelf enjoyed a good month for donations during March. Fr. Brian Lynch of Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church presents Pat Ollhoff, the food shelf’s operations manager, a check for $1,454.96. The donation was from the collection at the St. Patrick’s Day Mass March 18.

Overall, The Belle Plaine Food Shelf received $5,099 in cash donations and 5,487 pounds of donated food during March.

The cash donation will be matched by Minnesota Food Shelf later this spring.

Jason and Tammy (Meger) Dvorak are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Sophia Mary Helen Dvorak.

Sophia arrived on March 7, 2017 at 7:20 p.m. at Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. She weighed 7 pounds, 2 ounces and was 19 inches long.

B.P. Area Collectors Welcoming Case, Tractor Enthusiasts In an area where most farmers know their tractors by their green and yellow trademark colors, Brad Atkins enjoys a slightly different viewpoint.

To the uneducated see, his collector tractors are just orange and yellow. “It’s desert sunset and flambeau red,” Atkins said of the colors that adorn his beloved Case tractors and lawn equipment.

Only a true Case tractor enthusiast would know that without the benefit of a Google search.

If you want to talk tractors and learn about the Case brand, Atkins is glad to spend the time chatting.

Saturday (April 8, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.), Atkins and other members of the Northland Case Collectors Club are welcoming club members, Case and other tractor enthusiasts to an open house at area farms.

They all have different types of tractors. Tractor enthusiasts not on the Northland Case Tractor Club are welcome to start their tour at Atkins’ and Wendy Johnson’s farm. Atkins has a map of the other tour sites. Club members will enjoy dinner Saturday, 6 p.m., at the Vets Club in downtown Belle Plaine.

Like other collectors of vintage tractors, Atkins believes a person’s tractor preference is mostly a matter of what they grew up with and the dominant implement dealership near the family farm. In Atkins’ situation, that meant Case.

The area is home to suburbanstyle housing, restaurants, other businesses and a golf course.

The Atkins family farmed 50 acres. Brad’s father grew hay and other cash crops. “I grew up on that Case 1030,” Atkins said, pointing to one of the seven Case tractors in his collection. The seven were new between 1966 and ’69. “I used it for tilling and bailing hay.”

Atkins still uses his tractors for working his farm. He and Johnson grow field corn and sweet corn.

They enjoy the history of tractors, and sharing stories and information. He and Johnson load up tractors and take them to shows around the area. This year is the 175th anniversary of Case tractors.

Joseph T. Siwek Glen H. Crosby Glen H. Crosby, 84, of Henderson, passed away on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at the Sibley Medical Center in Arlington, MN. Memorial services will be on Friday, April 7 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Henderson. Visitation will be at the church from 10-11 a.m. the morning of the service. Burial will be at a later time with Military Honors at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Glen was born August 5, 1932 to Howard and Gertrude (Steim) Crosby near Blakeley. He grew up in the Blakeley area and following High School he entered the United States Army.

He married Elizabeth Mahoney on May 26, 1953 in Belle Plaine and following her death in 1957, he married Elizabeth Bermeister on March 10, 1958.

The couple lived in the Blakeley, Belle Plaine and Henderson area for years.

Glen worked worked in his earlier years at the Creamery in Belle Plaine and later worked several jobs in manufacturing, most memorable was at Theradyne (Kurt) Manufacturing in Jordan.

Glen enjoyed his time with family, hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

Glen is survived by his children, Jim (Joan) Crosby of Owatonna, Kathy Hegge and her friend, Dave Wolner of Montevideo, Charlene Dahn of Northome, Sandie Hornaman of Henderson, Bill (Brenda) Crosby of North Mankato and Wendi Haugberg of Henderson; many grandchildren; greatgrandchildren; and other relatives and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; wives, Liz and Betty; son, Robert; and granddaughter, Tanya Zellman.

A special thanks goes out to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Sibley County Medical Center for their loving concern and care.

Joe was a lifetime member and supporter of Holy Cross Catholic Church and a benefactor to many people and charities. He was a member of Hoo-Hoo International (Lumberman’s Fraternity), part-time farmer and avid collector and restorer of antique farm equipment, wrenches, padlocks, license plates and toys.

Growth Continuing in Scott, Carver Counties, Metro Area

St. Peter Seeking State Money for New Pavilion Project

If a bill St. Peter area state lawmakers have authored becomes reality, half the money the city needs for its pavilion project in Minnesota Square will become available. The other half will have to come from the city and local fund-raising efforts.

Sen. Nick Frentz, DFLNorth Mankato, has offered a bill seeking $450,000 of the $900,000 needed to build a new pavilion in Minnesota Square Park. Rep. Clark Johnson, DFL-North Mankato, has offered a companion bill in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Frentz said the historic

pavilion is a cultural landmark in St. Peter and the site of many community events, the St. Peter Herald recently reported.

The project includes $460,000 for the roof, $250,000 for the pavilion’s base and $100,000 for the column structure. The project also includes $75,000 for rooďŹ ng materials. The proposed project would expand the pavilion from 4,200 square feet to about 8,500 square feet, additional space that will include an enclosed kitchen and dining areas.

The original pavilion was built in 1854.

Le Sueur, Sibley Counties See Slight Declines

Scott County is still among the fastest growing counties in the area. It and Carver County have continued to add residents in the past seven years, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Since the 2010 Census, Scott County’s population increased by almost 10.6 percent. That’s the highest growth rate by percentage in the Twin Cities. Its 2016 population is estimated at 143,680, according to the Census Bureau. Carver County’s rate of growth is close behind its neighbor. Its population increased by just over 10 percent, from 91,042 in 2010 to the Census Bureau’s estimate of 100,262 as of July of 2016.

The Twin Cities has likewise grown. Its population was at 2.85 million people in 2010.

The 2016 Census Bureau estimate has the seven counties with a population of 3.03 million, an increase of 6½ percent or 184,067 people. Rural Minnesota also saw population growth, though not as pronounced as the Twin Cities. The non-metro counties’ population climbed from 2.45 million in 2010 to approximately 2.49 million, an increase of 1.3 percent (31,960 people). The Twin Cities region has 55 percent of the state’s population but accounted for 85 percent of the state’s net population growth since 2010.

Sibley County has lost population, albeit minor. The county’s 2010 population was 15,232. It has slowly declined – 15,114 in 2012 and 14,912 in 2014 – and is at 14,827 according to the Census Bureau’s 2016 estimates. Le Sueur County also lost population. Its 2016 population is estimated 27,591.

That’s a drop of 109 people since 2010.

As a whole, Minnesota is home to 5.52 million people, according to the Census Bureau’s 2016 estimates. That’s an increase of about 216,027 (4.1 percent) from 2010.

About two-thirds of the Twin Cities region’s estimated population growth came via more people being born than passing away. The remainder of the increase came from international migration -- more people moving into the region from outside the United States than are moving out.

Later this year, the Metropolitan Council will issue its own population estimates for cities and townships in the metro area, using the Census information as a resource. Counties and cities will review the draft estimates in May and the Council will certify and release the estimates publicly in July.

Scott County Historical Society Hosting Workshop on Soap Want to learn to make soap?

The Scott County Historical Society is offering a handson workshop on soap making.

Instructor David Hudson will teach participants the steps in making their own soap during a workshop Thursday, April 20, 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Participants will be divided into groups for hands-on practice, with each group assigned one of the steps to making soap.

Participants will receive a bar of soap to take home. The cost of the class is $10 for adults, $7 for society members. A minimum of ďŹ ve people needs to be signed up for the class to be held. A maximum of 12

Seventy percent of the respondents said a splash pad would not be an acceptable substitution for a pool.

Jordan Taking Temperature of Interest in a Pool Jordan residents are interested in a community pool, as long as it doesn’t cost too much.

The city’s parks and recreation commission recently discussed results of an online and hard copy survey of citizens’ interest in a community pool. The city received nearly 600 responses, said City Administrator Tom Nikunen. More than half of the respondents (325) said having a pool is very important to them, the Jordan Independent recently reported. Three-fourths of the respondents said they use a pool outside Jordan.

After sojourning in California since the preceding October, Bernard Stradcutter came back to Belle Plaine.

At the family home in Minneapolis occurred the death of Mrs. W.W. Thompson. She was formerly Susan McKnight, daughter of a pioneer Blakeley family. Upon her marriage to Mr. Thompson, Belle Plaine was her home for many years, Mr. Thompson had been engaged in the furniture and undertaking business here.

While looking after one of his three farms, John C. Latzke discovered the barn was on ďŹ re.

In rushing into the building to save horses, he was severely burned. The barn burned and with it three horses.

At St. John’s Lutheran Church took place the marriage of Miss Clara Trost and Ernest Holste.

Miss Ottila Trost and George Holste were the attendants.

Sam Kahn, who had bought the former Henry Beckers land on the river bottoms and had crew cutting the timber during the winter, had Joe Spandel set up a lumber sawing plant.

The logs were expected to run 75,000 feet of lumber.

Parishioners and other friends gave Rev. and Mrs. J. Janzig a surprise at their home in Blakeley Township, the occasion being their 10th wedding anniversary.

Some had claimed that rabbits can’t swim. When some boy saw a rabbit atop the pier of the river bridge, they climbed to try to catch him. The rabbit leaped out into mid-air in a 40-foot nosedive, came to the surface, and swam lustily to the Sibley County shore.

Dear Editor, I want to recognize a recent letter in the Belle Plaine Herald for conďŹ rming my comments about PETA. PETA is a worldwide lobbying organization with a lot of money and therefore power.

PETA trains individuals to lie on their job applications, trespass, and steal video images. The writer lists 8 organizations from around the world with ties to PETA. They report the name of a bill passed in the California legislature. Consider how many dollars it takes to pass a bill in California. Consider more that legislators from Berkley, Beverly Hills, Malibu, and Los Angeles voted on that bill instructing farmers on how to raise chickens.

The writer calls out “factory farms�. “Factory Farms� is a term invented by PETA to drive a wedge between small and large farmers in hopes of putting both of them out of business. Organic livestock farmers are equally targeted by the PETA umbrella groups according to minutes from recent board of directors meetings. Disciples like this writer call for humane treatment of animals. The farmers I know “husband� their animals and are “stewards� of creation. It would be a step backward for them to treat their animals humanely.

Sheep are raised as sheep and cows are raised as cows towards the highest purpose their lives can achieve.

This is a war. The survival of our rural way of life is at stake.

Animal agriculture is necessary to feed this country.

Dear Editor, Many years ago when I was 17 years old, I applied to the U.S. Naval Academy. As part of that process I was able to witness the 120 Years Ago interview of a fellow candidate, and it made quite an impression (1897) Peter Becker was getting on me. The tragedy of the year occurred on a Sunday afternoon while being ferried across the river. The boat upset and two of the occupants, Mary Traynor and William Zellman, drowned.

Eight other occupants saved themselves by hanging onto the boat or nearby willows. The accident could not be seen from the Belle Plaine side of the river, and it was not until Ferryman Thos. Carlin, taking another load over, came upon the scene and rescued those still alive. Miss Traynor was 19, Mr. Zellman 35.

As I heard the words come out of his mouth, it struck me that his was an answer that would not help his application to be accepted. How could a military organization choose to admit a young man who did not want to be told what to do, when that is exactly what he would experience in the extreme as a midshipman?

I was reminded of this after reďŹ&#x201A;ecting on a recent Herald article about Reason Allianceâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s desire to place a monument in Belle Plaineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s world famous Veteranâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Park. The proposed monument includes an inverted pentagram associated with the Satanic Temple (TST). The article cited Wikipedia to explain that TST uses Satan (and the inverted pentagram) â&#x20AC;&#x153;as a symbol representing â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the eternal rebelâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; against arbitrary authority and social norms.â&#x20AC;? I interpreted this to mean that TST upholds the ultimate anarchist as its inspiration and model of behavior.

Just as 31 years ago I thought that someone who does not like to be told what to do is not a suitable candidate for the Naval Academy, I would strongly suggest that our military disqualify anarchists from enlisting in our armed forces and that anarchists look for a career path other than the military, one that requires less obedience to authority and fewer norms of behavior to accomplish its mission; something more along the lines of an artist.

I also suspect that TST founder Douglas Mesnerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s understanding of his phrase â&#x20AC;&#x153;a lot of veterans within our ranksâ&#x20AC;? represents a signiďŹ cantly smaller number, many orders of magnitude smaller perhaps, than the average personâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interpretation, and I would be interested in knowing that number and their names.

A mild and mostly snow-free winter turned into a dry spring, which led to a number of grass and other ďŹ res for Belle Plaine area ďŹ reďŹ ghters to combat.

It was expected that 3.5 million people would drive to Scott County to visit one of its major recreational attractions in 1987, which was starting to put a burden on county services such as jails, courts, public safety, highways and bridges, human services, land use and planning, and environmental protection.

For that reason, the Scott County Board passed a resolution to request authority from the state legislature to tax admissions to major recreational attractions in Scott County, including Canterbury Downs and Valley Fair, etc.

Belle Plaineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual German Day observance, which started in 1982, would take place that coming Saturday with German food being served and live entertainment in some local bars.

At that time German Days was normally scheduled to take place four weeks after St. Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day. Belle Plaine High School took ďŹ rst place at the District 13A Speech Contest at Montgomery. Finishing ďŹ rst individually for Belle Plaine were Mike Gaffney (Extemporaneous Speaking), Gretchen Koenig (Drama) and Sheral Kahle Poetry. Also advancing to the regional contest by placing in the top three at district would be Margaret Siegler, Kris Giesen, Geri Devine, Joanna Boschee, Beth Jones, Julie Johnson, Erik Einertson and Mike Spellacy.

by Beverly Brandt The Friends of Rush River met on March 29 at the Henderson Roadhaus. The meeting was called to order by President Tom Bender.

The secretary and treasurer reports were read and approved, noting a generous gift by the Belle Plaine German Days Committee.

The 2017 maintenance contracts are all in place and ready for the camping season. We are looking for a good year.

There was discussion on putting the group’s ideas and photos on Facebook, and it was decided to go ahead with the idea.

Park Cleanup Day will be Saturday, April 29 at 9 a.m.

Lunch will be served at noon for the workers. Trails will be the big job as there are a lot of changes in these with all the rain and high water damage from last year’s rains. Black dirt needs to be leveled and roads need to be gravelled, etc.

Our next meeting will be held 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26 at the Henderson Roadhaus.

This is three days before the park cleanup, so come join the group and give us your ideas as to what should be done to the park.

Sheriff Luke Hennen said children can use well-intentioned apps -- Snapchat, Vault, Kik, Twitter and ooVoo -- to send sexted messages, videos for cyber-bullying. He offered parents tips to recognize places in the phone system where images

or messages can be hidden. Parents who aren’t comfortable using technology can call a deputy or a police officer for help.

But sexting can also involve adults. A new law in Minnesota makes it illegal for adults to distribute without permission intimate photos of one another to other people under the state’s so-called “revenge porn” law.

Prosecution could be either gross-misdemeanor or felony levels.

Sending the image is not a crime, Hocevar said. Neither is receiving it. The crime occurs, he said, when the receiver resends it. Youngsters, especially girls, are too trusting, Hocevar said. She also encouraged parents cover the camera lens on laptop computers in children’s bedrooms. Hackers, Hotakainen said, can activate a laptop’s camera and watch children in their bedrooms while the computer appears to be off.

Harstad warned parents to be leery of the information their children share on social media. Posting information about where a child works, where they go to school and information about where and who they hang out with can give predatory adult can masquerade as young people.

Hocevar challenged parents to keep a close watch of their children’s smartphone use. “Unfortunately,” he said, Hocevar gave his own daughter a smartphone.

It comes with strict rules. Mom and dad can see it whenever they want, he said. They get to know all passwords. A lack of cooperation results in the phone being shut down, he said.

“Nobody wants to do this. But it’s the job we took when we decided to have kids,” Hocevar said. “Be a parent. Don’t be a friend.”

Tigers Eager to Open Season The Belle Plaine High School boys’ and girls’ golf teams have had next to no time outdoors to prepare for the 2017 season and are eager to hit the links. The boys are scheduled to open the competitive season this Saturday at Hayfield, while the girls are not due to open the season April 17 at Jordan, which for a second year in a row will be Belle Plaine’s home course.

Head coach Jerold Stauffacher says the Belle Plaine boys have the potential to move a step up from their second place showing in the Minnesota River Conference last season.

“This year’s team has the potential to be in the mix for a conference title. We return three players that have three years of varsity experience in Cole Haller, Justin Stauffacher and Jake Pingalore,” Stauffacher said. “We will count on those three to score well for us this year. We will need a couple of guys that have played some

varsity in the past to take a step forward and give us some options for scores to choose from.”

The girls’ team will be led by two-time state-qualifier Ireland Lambrecht, who at the time is still nursing a basketball injury but is expected to play this season. She is a senior.

Other returning varsity players are Caitlin Preusser, Kaitlyn Siegle and Daisy Vinkemeier.

Joining the team this year and looking to make an impact are Lily Vinkemeier, Olivia Schatz and Teresa Wentworth.

“The girls have a mix of experience and inexperience, and the potential of the team will be based off how fast we can improve our newer players,” Stauffacher said.

Belle Plaine finished third among five full teams in the conference last season.

Belle Plaine Girls Take First at MRC Indoor; Boys Third The Belle Plaine High School girls’ track and field team did what it’s accustomed to each year as it easily captured Friday’s Minnesota River Conference Indoor Meet at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Belle Plaine boys took third.

Both the Belle Plaine boys’ and girls’ teams are scheduled to open the outdoor season with a five-team meet at the Belle Plaine Athletic Complex this Thursday afternoon. The Tigers will also host a meet next Tuesday.

Even Without Ice, There’s Always Time for Hockey While many of their classmates were on vacation, a group of Belle Plaine boys created their own non-ice rink on the parking lot of the District Center Building on South Willow Street several days during last week’s spring break. The Jordan boys, a favorite to be at the top of the MRC when the outdoor season concludes later this spring, chalked up 188.5 team points to take the indoor 2017 MRC indoor title Friday at MSU. Belle Plaine to Host Tourney This Saturday The Belle Plaine High School baseball team, fresh of its practice/scrimmage trip to Florida during spring break last week, was scheduled to travel to Fairmont for the season opener Tuesday after this edition of the Herald went to press.

The Tigers will host their annual home-opening four-team tournament this Saturday. Belle Plaine will take on HinckleyFinlayson at noon at Tiger Park, while East Grand Forks will play Minnehaha Academy at the same time at Heritage Square Park. If Belle Plaine and Minnehaha Academy have the same result in their first game, they will meet in a rematch of last June’s state Class 2A championship game, which was won

by Minnehaha Academy 5-1 at Target Field in Minneapolis.

The winners of Saturday’s first two games will play at 2:30 p.m. at Tiger Park, while the losers will play at the same time

at Heritage Square Park.

Belle Plaine is scheduled to host Jordan in the Minnesota River Conference opener 5 p.m. next Monday, which will be followed by a visit by St. Peter at 5 p.m. the following day.
