Andy Stueven holds up the catfish that earned him the grand prize ($2,000) at this past weekend’s Belle Plaine River Fishin’ Contest. Also pictured is Stueven’s son, Gage.
A Reversal of Fortune Last Year’s Runner-Up Wins Belle Plaine River Fishin’ Contest With Smaller Fish by Dan Ruud A year a ago, Andy Stueven of North Mankato, a participant in the Belle Plaine River Fishin’ Contest, caught a 51-pound, 3-ounce giant flathead catfish at approximately 10 p.m. that Friday. He thought that would almost surly earn him the $2,000 grand prize. But when Stueven brought the
fish to Court Square Park to be weighed, there on the board already was a contest-record flathead caught by Mike Stuewe of Belle Plaine. Stueven, whose fish was just a pound and 3 ounces less than Stuewe’s, received $600, while Stuewe netted $2,000. A year later, Stueven was back at it, and when he caught
a 39.25-pound flathead, he figured he may be in the prize money again but that the grand prize was probably out of the question. After all, this fish weighed about a dozen pounds less than his second-place catch a year ago.

by Dan Ruud America’s pastime, in one of its purist forms, will drop in on Belle Plaine and Jordan over the next few weekends as the Minnesota State Amateur Baseball Class C and B tournaments will take place at Tiger Park and the Mini Met. Class C games begin this Friday at both ball parks (see accompanying schedules and brackets). The Class B tournament, featuring 16 teams, will begin Saturday, Aug. 23. Le Sueur’s Bruce Frank Field will host four first-round games of that tournament on Aug. 23 before all remaining games (Class B and C) will be played in Belle Plaine and Jordan. The Class C championship will take place in Jordan and the Class B title will be decided in Belle Plaine, both on Labor Day. Fortunately for Belle Plaine fans, there will be a hometown team to cheer on as the Tigers, one year after finishing second in the state Class C tournament at Delano and Maple Lake, crushed Henderson 10-0 Friday night to earn the third and final seed from Region 6C (see game details inside). St. Peter, which gets a first-round bye, and Jordan are the region’s other representatives in the 48-team, single-elimination state tournament. Belle Plaine has now qualified for the state tournament five years in a row. Green Isle is also in the field. Belle Plaine has hosted/cohosted the state tournament four previous times – 1966, 1981, 1992 and 2004. Shane Hofmann, tri-chair of the Belle Plaine State Tournament Committee, said a lot has changed at Tiger Park since the last time it hosted a state tournament 10 years ago. Many of those changes have taken place in the last year, including a new state-of-art scoreboard. Among the other recent improvements to Tiger Park was the construction of a deck along the right-field line that
seats an additional 75 to 100 people. Numerous amenities have also been added to park’s entry and concession areas. The outfield fences are almost fully covered by ivy, much like Chicago’s Wrigley Field thanks to a project that started several years ago. The dugouts seats are being refurbished with new boards this week. Jordan’s Mini Met has also undergone a number of improvements. The park features a grandstand along the thirdbase line and a spacious grass hill area beside it along the left-field line where people can watch the game picnic-style. Extra bleachers are being installed along the first-base line for the increased number of fans expected for the tournament. Admission to the tournament is $7 for adults and $4 for students. Kids 12 and under get in free. Chairing the tournament from Belle Plaine’s end of things along with Hofmann are Dennis Lawson and Brent Meyer. Ken Tritz and Nathan Muehlenhardt are heads of food concessions and Brad Schultz beverage concessions. Other chairs include Dave
Kreft (apparel sales), Mike Zellmann and Paul Fogarty (out-of-town team hosts), Brett Kruschke (public address system and scoreboard operations), Brad Lawson (grounds crew), and Kevin Studnicka, John Bergs and Mark Hartman (admissions). Hofmann said Tiger Park is “looking outstanding,” thanks to the work of the groundskeepers, including Johnny Miller, Joe Huber, Dave Wagner and Dave Gnan. The president of the Belle Plaine Baseball Association Board, which was instrumental in luring the tournament to Belle Plaine, is Gerry Meyer. The vice president is Schultz and the secretary/treasurer is Brent Meyer. Also on the board are Hofmann, Lawson, Tritz, Wagner, Kruschke, Jeff O’Brien and Nathan Muehlenhardt.

Mark Seliger is banking on his investment in solar panels to significantly reduce or eliminate his monthly electric bill. He has the only set of solar panels the city is aware of in Belle Plaine. Installing the panels required a building permit.
Solar Power Could Almost Nix B.P. Man’s Monthly Electric Bill
Most people enjoy sunny days. Mark Seliger really likes days when the sun shines brightly. Sunshine not only brightens the day for the Belle Plaine homeowner, it saves him money. How much? Last fall, there
was a month when the electric bill for his 2,000-square-foot split level house on South Maple Street was $17. Before he had a solar panel system installed, the electric bill occasionally topped $100 a month. Seliger is banking on sunny days. Typically, the system cuts his typical monthly electric bill, he said, by between half and
two-thirds. He’s the only solar system in Belle Plaine the city is aware of. Installing the system requires a building permit and the city has only granted one such permit for a solar system, he said. The 28 are 65 inches by 40 inches

National Night Out An estimated 1,000-plus Belle Plaine residents stopped by Heritage Park last Tuesday evening (Aug. 5) for the annual National Night Out festivities. The event is billed as an opportunity for police officers, the city and residents to build positive relationships and help each other out in times of need. Police officers and city officials like Mayor Mike Pingalore (far right) grilled hot dogs for residents and chatted about how things are in their respective neighborhoods. Firefighters brought equipment to demonstrate how it is used. They also helped children cool off on a warm evening. Children also had the chance to have their bicycles undergo safety checks and receive a free bike helmet.

Ag Appreciation Days Matt Saxe Chevrolet Buick of Belle Plaine held Ag Appreciation Days this past Friday and Saturday at the dealership. At the event, Saxe, who is a honorary Belle Plaine FAA member, was presented a certificate of appreciation for the “encouragement, cooperation and assistance” he has provided to Belle Plaine FFA through the years in “helping them accomplish outstanding achievements in agriculture, leadership, citizenship and community development.” Pictured, from left, are FFA member Samuel Schmidt, Saxe, FFA instructor Bruce Mathiowetz and FFA member Levi Schmidt. There were a number of other activities for both kids and adults, ranging from a petting zoo to a bounce house to ag equipment displays to a one-man polka band. The Trebesch family of Green Isle was honored by the United Pullers of Minnesota in 2012 Free hot dogs were also served. for best event of the year at its Memorial Pull and best track of the year. The family includes (back row, from left) Logan Rohde, Kipp Trebesch Jr, Collin Trebesch, Lindsey Trebesch. Seated (from left) are Deb and Kipp Trebesch Sr. with grandson Kipp Trebesch III. Rohde was honored by UPM with its crew chief of the year award in 2012.
Memorial Tractor Pull a Labor of Love for Green Isle Family Just about the time Deb and Kipp Trebesch and their family start to wonder if all the behindthe-scenes work is worthwhile, the volunteers start to show up and do whatever’s needed to make the annual tractor pull they host in Green Isle worth all the work. The Memorial Pull – held in memory of friends and family – will be held Aug. 22, 7 p.m., in Green Isle’s industrial park. In its first two years, it has drawn nearly 2,000 people – more than three times the town’s population – to the annual event. The event is expected to pay out $20,000 in prize money for National Tractor Pullers Association (NTPA) competitors in eight different classes on the 320-foot-long track. But it is not the prize money as much as it is the causes the event and family supports. Along with gate receipts, the event includes a raffle. Money collected helps support efforts to fight MarFam Syndrome, a genetic disorder that affects the body’s connective tissue. Connective tissue holds all the body’s cells, organs and tissue together and plays an important role in helping the body grow and develop properly. Kipp Trebesch Jr.’s 2-year-old son, Collin, suffers from the disease. He’s as tall as his 5-year-
old brother but weighs about 25 pounds less than his older brother. The disease also attacks the patient’s eyes.
‘A Good Community Thing’
Profits from the memorial pull also go to Ronald McDonald House at the Children’s Hospital of Minneapolis. When Collin was at Children’s Hospital for treatment, Kipp and Lindsey Trebesch were impressed by the assistance and support the Ronald McDonald House provided patients and their families. “They help people when they need it most,” Kipp, Jr. said. The Trebesch family also donates remaining proceeds to Green Isle Community School. The donations aren’t as large as the family wishes they would be. With the donations, the event has yet to make a profit in its first two years. They hope this is the year. If the memorial pull turns a profit, the money will go back into the community. “It’s a good community thing,” Kipp Trebesch, Sr. said. “We like the idea this is a way to help people.” They have witnessed first hand the power of supporting people. The truck and tractor pull is a memorial pull in memory of Jeff Gueningsman, a friend and
competitor from Winsted. Cancer took him in July of 2011. He was 46. He left behind his wife, Kay, and daughter, Annie, who friends described as “the light of his life.” That same year, Kipp Sr’s father, Delmar, lost his battle with cancer. The following year, his mother, Bonnie, died from kidney failure. The Trebeschs witnessed firsthand the support of friends and community members reaching out to help in a time of need for themselves and others. They have also been impressed by the support the event has received from the Green Isle community. An army of volunteers – from the Green Isle Legion and Lions, the Green Isle and area fire departments – have all helped the event through volunteer hours. The memorial pull has been successful. In 2012, the United Pullers of Minnesota voted it the best event of the year. The UPM Board of Directors voted the track in Green Isle the best track of the year. “It’s just amazing,” Deb Trebesch said. They guess as many as 100 people give their time to help the event be successful. “There’s no way we could do this without all the volunteer help.”
Renaissance Festival Opens Saturday The Minnesota Renaissance Festival will open for its 44th season this Saturday and Sunday and continue each weekend through Sept. 28 at its grounds just off Highway 169 in Shakopee. Event hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (rain or shine). Minnesota’s has grown to be the largest Renaissance Festival in the United States with an annual attendance of 300,000.

Farmers Market Corner The weather continues to cooperate on Wednesdays for the Belle Plaine Farmers Market. Take a walk or go for a bike ride and stop down at the park. It’s loads of fun and you never know what you’ll find. The summer vegetables are in full swing and looking great. Tomatoes, peppers, green beans, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and just about anything you’re looking for can be found at the market. There’s even new pickles and salsa ready to go. There’s a great park for the kids to climb on – and they can get their faces painted or try out an airbrush tattoo. As you water your gardens,
remember to water from below to control blight. Make sure our feathered friends are getting watered too. Birdbaths make a great addition to any garden and it’s fun to watch the birds give themselves a bath. New vendors are always welcome. Your first week is free and then it’s just $10 a month to help with advertising costs. The Belle Plaine Farmers Market is held every Wednesday from 3:30-6:30 p.m. May through Oct. 15 at Court Square Park. Vendors are welcome! You can like us on Facebook for seasonal information and recipes. For more information, contact Lisa Fahey at 952-8735665 or Diane Skelley, 952873-2467.

Sibley CR 6 (Scenic Byway Road) Opens Earlier Than Expected
Chard Tiling Finishes Repairs in a Week
fall June 19-20. The temporary repair includes filling in a gap nearly 200 feet wide, a new sixfoot culvert and a 24-inch overflow pipe. The washed out gap, once refilled and packed was covered with a four-inch layer of blacktop. The permanent repairs should be implemented next year with a thicker layer of blacktop following a hydrology study and design work to determine the size of the permanent culvert to properly handle storm water running down the hill to County Road 6, said Tim Becker, Sibley County’s director of Public Works.
Chard won the contract July 31 with a bid of $74,563 – well below the engineer’s estimate of approximately $130,000. Becker said the permanent fix might include a culvert up to 10 feet wide to handle water flowing down the hill and a thicker layer of blacktop. The study and design work will cost about $70,000 and the permanent fix of the washout area will cost around $1.2 million, Becker said. Sibley County is counting on funding from the federal government to pay for the permanent repairs.

operations officer of the new naval ship, the USS Pluck, at the Wilmington Boat Works, Wilmington, Calif. Cpl. Milton Norman Jr., who was stationed in Korea for 14 months, received his discharge from the Army and returned to the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Norman. Thomas Hayes, 83, lifelong resident of Belle Plaine, passed away at Valley View Hospital on Aug. 11. He was a patient there for almost three years. Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Church with burial at the family lot in St. John’s Cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Daly and children, Mr. and Mrs. Eugene F. O’Brien and Dr. D.W. Wilson attended the National Convention of the Knights of Columbus in Louisville, Ky. Mr. and Mrs. H.A. Roble, who had been operating the Roble’s Cafe here for 17 months, sold out to Mr. and Mrs. James O. Lux of Northfield. Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Farrington observed their golden wedding anniversary at their home in Eden Valley. A storm that ended a severe drought suffered by the area was most welcomed and revived crop hopes. Owing to reasons of health, Ray Theis, who was on the Fred Keup farm, retired from farming and held an auction of livestock as well as machinery. MinValley Milk Plant was preparing to replace the last of its pans with the large improved pans in order to enlarge capacity. A family picnic was held at the Everett Edberg home in East Union. An emergency drive for March of Dimes polio funds was underway.
90Indy Years Ago (1924)
There was concern over corn crop prospects. It was an unusually cool summer and corn was backward. There were Union church services at Bieder’s grove that drew attendance from a radius of 20 miles. Myrtle Kahle, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Christ Kahle, died at age 24. Herald Willard and Charles Thompson were over from Buffalo to look up boyhood acquaintances. They were the sons of W.W. Thompson, who operated a furniture store here in the 1880s and 1890s. At St. Paul took place the marriage of Miss May O’Neill, daughter of Mrs. Agnes O’Neill, formerly of Belle Plaine, to Edward J. Coleman. Mr. and Mrs. N.M. Walerius of Rock Rapids, Iowa, were back for a sojourn in Nick’s old Nugget hometown. D.A. Kelly, well-known Blakeley merchant, died at his home in Anaconda, Mont., at the age of 79. His wife, the former Clara Dean of Blakeley, and four children survived him. During Kelly’s extensive business operations in Blakeley, the village flourished. Construction work started on the new location of the trunk highway from a point south of Belle Plaine and westward on a new route up the Devine hill, building a road where no road Galaxy had ever been before. The marriage of Miss Ann Schommer to Lawrence Schmitt took place, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Schmitt being the attendants. The couple established their
home in St. Paul. Mr. and Mrs. Ed A. Stearns of Dunkirk, N.Y., made their first trip to Minnesota, coming to visit their cousins, the Schultz and Stier families and Mrs. Julius Otto. They made the trip by auto. Mrs. Young, mother of John P. Mann of Faxon, died and funeral services were held at the church in Jessenland. Mrs. Young had resided in Belle Plaine a year or more in earlier years. Jay Whitlock, who had been manager of a line lumber yard at Columbia, S.D., was promoted by his company to traveling auditor, and Jay urged his brother, Donald, to come out and manage the yard at Columbia, which his brother did. James L. O’Connell of St. Thomas took a load of his prized sheep to exhibit at the fair in Rochester. The German Settlement reported a hailstorm that brought down the largest hailstones ever seen in that vicinity. County Agent John Sheay’s annual Farm Bureau picnic was again a big success with more than 1,000 persons in attendance despite a rainstorm.
120 Years Ago (1894)
The Omaha railroad was offering tickets at half fare for the Barnum & Bailey Circus in the city. Local wheelmen were getting excited over bicycle races they were staging. Milton Dairy Co. was erecting a cream station at the A.C. Schmidt farm in Blakeley Township and looking over sites for a station on the north side of the river. Smallpox in those days was a dread disease. A local girl, Mary Thill, became afflicted. Dr. Hewitt of the state board of health came out from the city to take charge of the quarantine regulations. He erected a tent on the river bottoms and moved the patient there. He had the front of the family home up town enclosed with a high wall of boards.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, I'd like to voice my support of an overpass on the south side of Belle Plaine if there are several sizable businesses that've said they'll come to town with it. Without that list of businesses, I'm against the bridge and you should be too. An overpass is a hefty financial burden on taxpayers and without the economic benefits set in stone it doesn't make sense. Sure it'd be convenient for some to have a second crossing, but I have yet to find anyone who's been so strongly in favor of saving a couple minutes that they're pleased at the prospect of paying more in taxes each year so it doesn't seem to be a note-worthy argument. It could be cited as a safety concern, giving emergency vehicles a faster path across town but if that was the deciding factor I'd like to think MNDoT wouldn't have taken out the stop lights the first place which, although inconvenient for the throughtraffic, allowed quicker crossing when needed - if they think the current set up is safe enough they're either right or should be in serious trouble for actively creating a pretty major safety issue. Our town hasn't seen substantial growth lately and if an additional overpass is the push that will drawn up new business, I'm all for it. The jobs created would give residents more options to work locally instead of driving, in some cases, over an hour to and from work each day. Maybe the new businesses will even help attract some other types of community development too; increased housing, more park land, perhaps a community college, or something that none of us has thought of yet that'll make Belle Plaine an even better place to live. But in my opinion, the deciding factor for a second bridge really comes down to the financial burden and the amount of community development that we know upfront will come with it. The first bridge brought some business which is fantastic, but what about the large amount of land that's been left undeveloped for a number of
years now around it - why won't new businesses build where we already have a bridge? What does the second bridge offer to businesses that the first does not? I'm in favor of the bridge if it enriches the community, but I feel taxpayers need to know what 7 million dollars of pavement is bringing to town. Our council is now unanimously in favor of the additional bridge while there is still land that could be developed by the first and all we have been promised from the second is political rhetoric. I hope you take the time to ask our city's leaders who all is on that list because if it doesn't offset the taxpayer's burden substantially or worse it doesn't exist at all, "the bridge will bring business to town" frankly is just wishing on a 7 million dollar phone to ring and I don't know about you, but I'd like my tax dollars used with a bit more care if that's the case. Respectfully, Douglas Crosby

Area Police, Deputies Focus on Excess Speed During July B.P. Police Wrote 26 Tickets During Special Patrols
Area police officers and sheriff’s deputies wrote dozens of citations for speed violations along Highway 169 and on the county’s busier roadways during a special sweep focusing on speeders during July. The initiative is known as Toward Zero Deaths (TZD). The Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of Traffic Safety, coordinated the campaign, which ran from July 1427. Officers from the sheriff’s office and city police departments jointly work high-traffic areas like Highway 169 as well as high-traffic areas in town. Belle Plaine police working the TZD shifts wrote 26 tickets for drivers stopped for speeding both in Belle Plaine and outside the city limits during the sweep.
Deputies from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office wrote 63 excess speeding citations during the two-week time TZD initiative. Unsafe and illegal speed is the most commonly reported contributing factor in fatal crashes, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety. Scott County sheriff’s deputies focus on the dangers of excess speed since five fatal crashes between 2011 and 2013 had excess speed as contributing factors to the crash. In Carver County, two fatalities between 2011-13 had excess speed as a contributing factor, said Jim Olson, Carver County’s sheriff. Statewide, 235 traffic deaths statewide occurred when excess speed was a contributing factor.
“When we increase our speeds behind the wheel, we increase our chances of crashing,” Olson said. In Carver County, an average speeding citation for 10 mph over the limit is $145. Motorists stopped at 20 mph over the speed limit face double the fine, and those ticketed traveling more than 100 mph can lose their license for six months. In Scott County, the typical speeding citation for 10 mph over the posted speed limit brought a $125 fine. The typical fine for a Scott County citation for 20 mph over the limit is $225. “This campaign was about educating motorists that speeding is a dangerous and potentially deadly habit,” Olson said.

Crews are still working on cleaning up Chaska Athletic Park from the June 2014 flood. Protecting the ballpark from flooding will eventually pay for itself. The stadium is caked in mud. The grass needs reseeding and the fences are caked in mud. The seats and grandstand must all be power-washed. The 2010 flood cost $100,000 to cleanup with about $70,000 of that cost coming from the federal government.

Scott County Hosting Grand Opening of Transit Station
Scott County is hosting the grand opening of the Marschall Road Transit Station Tuesday (Aug. 19) in Shakopee. The station, a former automobile and truck dealership is now a hub for transit for SmartLink, the BlueXpress, Shakopee Transit, Land-to-Air and the county library system. Bus services to the Minnesota State Fair begin Aug. 23. The grand opening includes a welcome at 1 p.m., formal remarks by state, Metropolitan Council and county officials and a ribbon cutting at 2 p.m. At 3 p.m., a guided tour of the
station will be conducted. Refreshments will be available. The transit services are available through a partnership between Scott and Carver counties, the Metropolitan Council and the cities of Shakopee and Prior Lake. The county bought the former dealership in 2010 for approximately $3.2 million. It has 400 stalls and direct bus access to Highway 169. The facility is accessed via Weston Court, just off 17th Avenue southwest of the intersection of Highway 169 and Marschall Road in Shakopee.

Superintendent’s Update
By Dr. Kelly Smith
I would like to thank everyone who helped to make the Randy & Terry Carlson Benefit such a success this past Saturday night. With a great meal provided by Marty Williams and crew, some entertaining alumni basketball action (rumor has it that Coach Carlson actually played a few minutes and hit the scoring column!) and great conversation with many friends, the evening was a great success. Thanks to school administrators Dave Kreft, Mindy Sparby, Liann Hanson and Kim DeWitte for their organization of the event. While the final result is still being calculated, it looks like we will have raised just short of $8,000 to help the Carlson family deal with the loss of their home. Thanks everyone! Monday was the first day of activities for our high school sports programs and once again we had great turnouts for our programs. It’s hard to believe that our fall sports programs begin their competition seasons in one week. On Monday, the girl’s tennis team opens the season at LeSueur-Henderson and the cross country teams travel to Watertown-Mayer. The volleyball team opens their season the following Tuesday at LeSueur-Henderson while the football team opens their season at home on Thursday, August 28th against Albany. Good luck to all participants and teams. Thanks for participating in Belle Plaine activities! We had three successful Parent Information Nights regarding our Enhanced Learning Initiative (1 to 1 iPad program) last week and are preparing for our rollout for students in grades 7-12. Seventh through twelfth grade students will receive their iPads on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday night next week at Oak Crest Elementary School. Each student must register for a specific meeting time of 4 p.m. 5:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. on each of those days as we will be limiting the number of students each session to 100. Three forms – the Acceptable Use Policy, the iPad Loan Agreement and the Insurance Option form must be completed and the insurance fee of $25 must be paid before receiving the iPad. If families are not available next week to pick up the devices, there will be dates and times during the week of August 25 when the devices will be available for pick up at the high school. All students should have an active Apple ID account when they pick up their iPad so they are ready to sign in with Apple and access our device monitoring system, AirWatch. Students in grades K-6 will receive their iPads after school has begun. Parents should bring their forms and the insurance fee to the back to school conferences on September 2 & 3. Devices will be handed out in the classroom beginning with students in grades 3-6 and finishing with our Kindergarten through grade 2 students. I am excited about the work that our staff has done this summer as they continue to work to change the way curriculum is delivered and how students are assessed in the classroom. This iPad rollout to all students is the first step in a multi-year journey as we seek to enhance our educational system. As always, if you have any questions about school matters, please feel free to call me at 873-2400 or check our website at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us. You may also find me on Twitter at @BPTiger716. Jordan School Board Pondering New Animalsin-School Policy The Jordan School District is considering a policy that will manage and control the presence of animals in school buildings. The school board will consider the final reading of a new policy intended to manage the presence of animals in school buildings as a benefit to education. The building principal will have the final say on written requests for having animals within a building, the Jordan Independent recently reported. Laurie Schmidt, a special education teacher who works with autistic students, offered the school board first-hand knowledge of how animals can benefit the education of some children. But that benefit has to be weighed against children and adults with allergies to animals or are frightened by animals, said Jordan Schools Superintendent Matt Helgerson. The point of the policy, he said, is to manage animals in schools and not eliminate them.

Tigers Make Statement by Brett Kruschke, Mike Schultz and Matt Schultz In that rare season when the state tournament is held in your hometown, the Belle Plaine Tigers managed their fifth straight trip to the grand showcase – and seventh in the last eight years – but they will not open the festivities in Tigertown. Rather, thanks to grabbing the No. 3 seed from Region 6C after must-wins last week against Gaylord and Henderson, the Tigers will open up in Jordan at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Detroit Lakes Angels. At that same time on Friday, the first game of the state tournament in Belle Plaine will be taking place between the Howard Lake Orphans and Montevideo Spartans. The Tigers were nearly spectators for that game – and the entire tournament – as Gaylord took them to 10 innings last Wednesday in a 1-0 victory. Ryan Diers then pitched Belle Plaine into the tournament with a seveninning, 17-strikeout no-hitter against Henderson. The St. Peter Saints, who pushed the Tigers into the Region 6C loser’s bracket with a 1-0 win on Aug. 3, once again rode starting pitcher Matt Lewis to a 2-0 triumph over Jordan for the region’s top seed. Should the Tigers win their opening-round game, a doozy looms next Saturday at the friendly confines of Tiger Park with what would be a state championship rematch from last year against Sartell. The Muskies, you may recall, took it to our beloved locals with a 10-0 paddling in seven innings. Eight games are scheduled at Tiger Park this weekend; see the accompanying bracket for full details. Belle Plaine will host 10 games next weekend and 11 the following for a three-weekend total of 29. Both ballparks have been whooped into beautiful shape and the great investments in time and treasure are now coming to fruition. Be sure to swing out to Tiger Park early and often this weekend to soak up the great atmosphere and catch some high-level ball! Tigers 1, Gaylord 0 After losing to St. Peter 1-0, the Tigers headed to the loser’s bracket in their quest to make the state tournament. First up were the Gaylord Islanders and their recent high school graduate, pitcher Brody Rodning. Tigertown faced him earlier in the year and got three runs off him in seven innings, so they knew going in that runs would be at a premium. And scarce they proved to be, as Belle Plaine came away with a hard-fought, 1-0 win in 10 innings. Rodning was very tough in this game, working nine innings while giving up no runs and just one hit with 15 K’s. Tigertown starter Jake Fiedler was also very good and worked seven innings with no runs and only four hits allowed. Dan Huber went the final three frames without giving up a run or a hit. In the bottom of the ninth, Rodning may have tired and walked the bases loaded, but he was able to get Brad Lawson to fly out to escape the jam. Reports have it that the electric lefty threw around 160 pitches in the game, so he was removed in favor of Britt Vaubel to start the 10th. Belle Plaine was the beneficiary of an error and three more walks in the 10th inning, the final one coming to Jake Fielder with the bases loaded on a fullcount, two-out delivery to end
Belle Plaine’s Ryan Diers pitched a no-hitter against Henderson Friday night at Tiger Park. The game ended after the top of the seventh inning due to the 10-run rule.
The Tigers’ Travis Latzke performed his usual traits on the base paths Friday night against Henderson – stealing bases and scoring runs. the contest. The win wasn’t hits, with Brad Lawson leading without some controversy, as the way with three. Carlson Benefit: B.P. Helps Out Coach, Friend and Family Alumni Hoops Fund-raiser a Big Success
Ben Bigaouette and several of fellow Belle Plaine High School alums were down at their former coach’s damaged house in rural Henderson in late-June. They weren’t there to catch up on old times or stroll down memory lane reliving their glory days on the hardwood. Shovels in hand, the young men were at Randy Carlson’s house on Henderson Station Road to help clear tons of mud and trees that slid down a hill and through a wall into the family’s dining room after a June 19-20 storm. The deluge dumped several inches of rain on ground already saturated by recent rainfall. The new moisture was more than the waterlogged land could take. Any way they could help, the alums were willing to give time to their former coach. A week or so later, after the Carlsons learned their homeowner’s insurance wouldn’t cover the damage to the house and its foundation, the idea of a fund-raiser to help the family was taking shape. Belle Plaine Junior-Senior High School Principal Dave Kreft and Mindy Sparby, the school’s activities director and junior high dean, took charge of the effort. Saturday evening (Aug. 9), the benefit drew nearly 300 spectators to the school. They generously donated approximately $8,000 to help the Carlson family. “I think the success was a tribute to the impact that Randy Carlson and the Carlson family have had on the community of Belle Plaine. The amount of kids he’s influenced either in the classroom and/or on the basketball floor is tremendous,” Sparby said. Once the decision to hold a fund-raiser was made, there was little doubt what had to be part if it, Kreft said. “The Carlsons have given so much to B.P. basketball and we knew that people wanted to give back. Basketball was the avenue for Randy to connect with so many of our alums.” Kreft said. “The Carlson kids carved out lifelong relationships with teammates and we knew their teammates would want to help out.” Since the plight the family faced was well publicized, finding help was the easy part. Picking a good weekend was the challenge. People were ready to step up and volunteer, Kreft said. “We heard from countless community members and staff, “Let me know of any way I can help,” he said. They considered several potential weekends, Kreft said before settling on Aug. 9. “It is challenging to find the perfect weekend that works for everyone,” he said. “We heard from former players that were disappointed that they couldn’t participate because of prior commitments.” Over 30 former BPHS basketball players from 1993 through 2014 Randy coached and teammates of Julie and Randy’s children -- Brittney, Tanya, Trent and Drew – were back at the junior-senior high school for the event. Former BPHS basketball and football coach Barry Wohler also played. “He’s one of the best friends I

Stueven brought his 39.25pounder to Court Square Park this past Saturday morning, where his name was immediately placed on top of the leader board. But there was still a number of hours left before the deadline for anglers to bring fish to the weigh-in. Stueven returned to the park later Saturday afternoon to find his entry still in first place. When 4 p.m. arrived, he was declared the winner. Stueven said he was getting some shuteye before an earlymorning shower woke him up and he started fishing again (near St. Peter). “I had a bullhead (for bait) all night and after I woke up, I switched to a sucker minnow,” said Stueven, adding that he also switched from fishing in a boat to casting from shore. At about 8:30 a.m., the eventual contest winner took the bait near a log jam. Stueven said he had to walk out and climb over a log that the line got hung up on before he could finish reeling in his prize flathead. Finishing second and receiving $600 was Brian Bentdahl of Mankato with a 34.75pound flathead that he caught just north of St. Peter at about 4 a.m. Saturday. While this year’s top flatheads did not come close to challenging the contest record, two other records may have been broken. Twelve-year-old Anthony Andrews of Belle Plaine
caught a carp weighing 18.55 pounds, while Adam Reak of Le Center brought in a channel catfish that tipped the scale at 19.85 pounds. No contest organizers or others present Saturday could recall a bigger carp or channel catfish ever being caught in the 39-year history of the contest. A total of six flatheads weighed at least 30.25 pounds this year. Another 19 weighed between 20.85 and 29.90 pounds. Some $4,000 in cash and prizes was distributed in various categories. Members of the DNR were on the scene throughout the day to periodically return the fish, which were kept alive in a large live-well tank, to the river. There were 227 entries in this year’s contest. A record 255 signed up last year and 244 in 2012. Following the fish weigh-in deadline, Marc Hollahan of Jordan won the Keg Throwing Contest. Candice Sell of Belle Plaine was tops in the women’s division, while Michael Glynn captured the 12 and under group. Winning the Tobacco Spitting Contest was Jacob Sellnow of Blakeley. Partial proceeds from the Minnesota River Fishin’ Contest go to Belle Plaine area youth outdoor training programs. In the past year, the contest has helped sponsor the Scott County Sheriff’s Youth Fishing Derby, gun training and the trap shooting team from Belle Plaine.
Members of the DNR were busy throughout the day Saturday transporting fish from the livewell tank at Court Square Park back to the river.
