A Hot River Fishin’ Contest School Board Picks Laager Chris Baynes’ Flathead Catfish Tops as Next B.P. Superintendent
Greg O’Brien’s by Less Than Half a Pound by Dan Ruud There have only been four 90degree days in the Twin Cities region so far this summer and two of them occurred during this past Friday’s and Saturday’s Belle Plaine River Fishin’ Contest. But that did not keep a contest-record 271 anglers (the previous record was 255 in 2013) from turning out for the 40th annual event, two of whom were paid handsomely for their efforts. Included were Chris Baynes of Mankato and Greg O’Brien of Belle Plaine. Baynes caught 41.50-pound flathead catfish that topped one caught by O’Brien by less than half a pound (41.15). One other flathead in excess of 40 pounds (40.65) was brought to the park by a man but the fish was disqualified for lack of health. It was carried to the park on a stringer and contest rules state: Fish must be carried to the weigh-in point in coolers or other suitable containers. These fish are the responsibility of the contestants. Last year’s $2,000 winner was a 39.25-pound flathead caught by Andy Stueven of North Mankato. Baynes’ win by a whisker this year netted him the $2,000 grand prize, while O’Brien won the second-place prize – a 17foot Alumacraft canoe. The third-place prize of $400 was won by Jake Robinson of Shakopee with a 35.85-pound flathead. The fourth largest fish of the day, good for $200, was a

Contract Talks Begin, Set for Approval Aug. 24
After nearly two hours of discussion that moved the Belle Plaine School Board members from a 3-3 split to a unanimous decision, the board sees Stillwater School District Assistant Superintendent Ryan Laager as their next superintendent. During a special meeting Thursday (Aug. 13) at Oak Crest Elementary, the board voted unanimously in favor of entering into contract negotiations with Laager to replace retiring Superintendent Kelly Smith. Ed Waltman, a consultant with South Central Services Cooperative, and Director Mike Ludvik, the school board’s chairman, will work on negotiating a contract agreement between the school district and Laager. “The candidate is very excited to enter into contract negotiations,” Waltman told the board after calling Laager with the board’s decision shortly before 9:30 p.m. The district sent Laager a proposed contract over the weekend. Monday morning, Waltman said, “I believe we have an agreement.” The school board expects the contract to be ready for approval at its Aug. 24 meeting. Laager and Bloomington School District Assistant Superintendent Tim Anderson were the two finalists for the position. Anderson interviewed with the board and met community members Wednesday (Aug. 12). Laager was in Belle Plaine for his interview Thursday before the board began deChris Baynes of Mankato was the winner of this year’s Belle liberating at 7:30 p.m. Plaine River Fishin’ Contest with this 41.50-pound flathead.
Board members said they could support either candidate. “It’s all about finding the right fit for you, your staff, your community,” Waltman told the board. “You have two excellent finalists.”
Tough Decision
After sitting through interviews with both men and hear-
ing the recommendation of a community committee of primarily district staff, board members struggled to reach consensus. They sifted through attributes of the two finalists, using phrases like “team builder,” “proven leader,” “honest and ethical,” “collaborator,” and “proven record” when describing both men. Laager and Anderson were lauded by board members for being “strategic” and their knowledge of the “best practices” of educational strategies. “We’re all struggling with what is the right answer. They’re both excellent candidates, which is a good problem to have,” said Director Dan Giesen. He acknowledged shifting his support from Anderson to Laager, changing a 3-3 split to 4-2. The positions of the other board members were not known because the candidate they supported was not publicly identified. In the end, Ludvik said Laager’s breadth of work ex-

Local Investment Group Exploring Golf Course Purchase Group is Interested in Valley View, Any Available Course
A group of local investors is interested in buying a golf course. While their interest is not exclusively focused solely on the course sitting idle just outside Belle Plaine’s southern
city limits, the foursome wants to know if area golf enthusiast would support their ownership if the group could swing the sale. Lee Sauter is the spokesperson for an unnamed group of four area residents potentially interested in purchasing and operating a golf course. Sauter, a retired Belle Plaine math teacher, stresses the group is not locked in on Valley View Golf Course.
B.P. School Board Filing Period Comes up One Name Short Vacancy Could be Filled by Write-In
Apparently interest in serving on the Belle Plaine School Board doesn’t garner the interest the school district hoped it would be. The filing period for this fall’s election closed last Tuesday with two candidates for three open seats. Director Tracy O’Brien and former board member Gary Steinhagen were the only two candidates who signed to run for three available four-year terms. Directors Mike Ludvik and Matt Lenz decided not to seek re-election. O’Brien is seeking election to the appointed position she has
held this year. Steinhagen, who served on the board from 2010-2013, is running for a seat on the board. With nobody filing for the third seat, the top write-in candidate who wants the job will win the seat on the Belle Plaine School Board. If the top write-in candidate decides not to take the seat, the next highest recipient of legitimate write-in votes will have the opportunity to serve, said Superintendent Kelly Smith. He’s checking with the Minnesota School Board Association for confirmation on handling the situation. If none of the write-in candidates want to serve, Smith said the board can appoint someone to fill the vacancy. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
Your Opinion:
The group is interested in your opinion on its efforts to acquire a golf course, possibly Valley View south of Belle Plaine. Lee Sauter wrote survey questions. They are available at: www.surveymonkey.com/r/Y9NZ9CR The course needs plenty of work to bring it back to playing shape. Its clubhouse features space for a sit-down restaurant. The group is interested in any golf course in the region that’s for sale. “That certainly would be a good option for us, because we’re all from or live around here,” Sauter said of Valley View. Owners LeRoy and Connie Chard closed the golf course and restaurant earlier this year. Sauter said he met with LeRoy Chard earlier this year and discussed the state of the golf course. A frequent patron of the 20-year-old course, Sauter won’t speculate on why Valley View was closed. He believes the course is both attractive and walkable. Sauter believes Valley View has the potential to be a viable business. Although it is not being ac-

Jon and Peg Schuette have operated Belle Plaine Auto at the corner of South Meridian and West Raven streets since 1983. In 1992, Jon began selling cars and trucks.
For Schuettes, Belle Plaine Auto, It’s Time to Turn the Page When discussing the future of Belle Plaine Auto, Jon Schuette stresses the point. “I’m not retiring.” Exactly what he’ll do after closing down his business this fall is yet to be determined. Schuette joke finding a job where somebody pays him a lot of money for not working too hard or very long each week. But he knows better. “I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he said. He looks forward to working for someone else. “I want to go home and see what it’s like to not worry about the business.” Schuette recently announced he plans to sell off the remaining stock of previously-owned cars he displays on the lot at the intersection of West Raven and South Meridian streets and close up shop. He recently completed the sale of the cor-
ner lot to Stier Transportation. Schuette has access to the property until the end of the year but expects to be out of the shop and office by October. He plans to lower prices on vehicles until the cars sell. In addition to selling vehicles, Schuette performs bodywork and some mechanical repairs as he’s able. Schuette won’t move his tools until he’s done selling cars. “If I move my tools, there’s nothing I can do,” he said. Schuette bought the business in 1983 from Mark Boeckman. He had worked for Boeckman beginning in 1980. Boeckman and his partner Dave Albrecht started the business several years earlier. “I happened to stop by one day looking for a job. I never left,” he said. Boeckman continued to work
on cars, but from a shop in Blakeley village. Albrecht was a big influence and the two frequently went to coffee and talked shop. Schuette credits Albrecht and Boeckman for his success in the early years on his own. “They’re good friends and mentors,” Jon said. In 1992, Schuette started selling cars to complement the work he performed on them. He stressed that any work he did on vehicles before displaying them for sale has always been fairly minor. People assumed that because he did body work, many of the cars were salvaged. During the summer, he sells more vehicles. The winter months see more bodywork performed at the shop, he said.

Worried About Deer-Airplane Crashes, Le Sueur Aims to Thin Herd With an increase in reports of airplane-deer crashes and nearcrashes at Le Sueur Airport, the city is planning to hunt and take 10 deer from the area immediately around the runway. Airport staff reports an increase in the number of reports of whitetail deer impeding the
use of runway, creating a public safety hazard. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources issued the Le Sueur Police Department a special hunt permit. Police will take 10 deer from the area around the airport, the Le Sueur NewsHerald recently reported.
To ensure an ethical use of the venison, the department wants to hear from residents interested in receiving the deer. The names of people to receive the deer will be drawn from a lottery. The people selected will receive the whole deer for processing.
Ceremonial Throw Belle Plaine Park Board Member Dan Gardner, who spearheaded the Disc Golf Course project for the city, threw the ceremonial first disc during Monday’s grand opening of the course at Union Square Park. Disc golf is a game in which a concave plastic disc is thrown into each of a series of metal baskets situated on an outdoor course, the object being to complete the course using the fewest possible throws. The Belle Plaine course opened earlier this year and is available to the public free of charge.
Movie Nights in Cologne
Schuettes (continued from page 1) Schuette enjoyed the satisfaction of repairing a vehicle. “I like being able to see what I’ve accomplished, he said. “If you just paint something and it doesn’t match (the original), everybody knows that. He particularly enjoys “vintage automobiles from the 1960s and ’70s. His lot has a Chevelle and an El Camino for sale. The El Camino didn’t need Schuette’s craftsmanship. Schuette’s always enjoyed being his own boss. Over the years, he’s learned plenty, from repairing electrical and engine issues to managing the business aspects of his business. Schuette’s learned plenty over the years “by trial and error, mostly error.
B.P. Born & Raised
He was born and raised in Belle Plaine. Schuette’s parents opened Cities Service gas
station and restaurant at the intersection of East Main and south Elm streets in 1946. In 1955, Willmar sold the business and built the Belle Plaine Motel on South Walnut Street. Willmar and Jon’s older brother, Craig, were killed in a car crash in 1956 on a supply run. In ’78, Jon met and later married Peggy Weldon. Over the years, while raising their children, she helped out with the business, washing cars and helping Jon with other facets of the business. Peggy doesn’t expect Jon’s time away from Belle Plaine Auto will be spent working only on his collection of cars. She knows he needs to be out in the workforce. “He’s too social, she said.
ing because Schuette is retiring. An opportunity too good to pass by triggered the decision to close down the business. His neighbor to the south – Stier Transportation – is enjoying some growth, thanks in part to winning a contract to provide some of Cologne Academy’s busing services. The bus company acquired Belle Plaine Auto’s space. It plans to use the space for parking and servicing of about four new buses, said Jim Koonst, one of the owners of Stier Transportation. “We’d still be here if the opportunity didn’t arise, Schuette said. While he calls seeking a different job “a new challenge, Schuette is grateful to the community and customers for the support over the years. “Time flies by so fast, you An Opportunity don’t even know you’ve been Belle Plaine Auto is not clos- there, he said. “But it’s been a good life.
Belle Plaine and area residents enjoyed the annual Cologne Firehouse Drive-In movie night Friday and Saturday (Aug. 14-15). Over 175 cars and trucks filled with moviegoers saw Friday night’s presentations of “Planes: Fire & Rescue and “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Saturday, 240 cars and their occupants were admitted to see “Big Hero 6 and “Back to the Future. (Above) Proceeds from the popular annual event go toward the restoration of Cologne’s first motorized vehicle, a 1924 Brockton-LaFrance fire truck. Belle Plaine PD: Remove Valuables; Lock Your Vehicles
Belle Plaine police are once again encouraging residents to remove all valuables from vehicles overnight and at the very least, lock the vehicles when they are not around. This week’s police report of calls from Aug. 10-16 contains reports from residents on South Eagle and South Grove streets
who found someone had gone through vehicles Friday night or early Saturday morning. Police Chief Tom Stolee said that in each case, the vehicles were all unlocked, making it easy for someone to look for something of value and quickly steal it.

Green Isle city council members are guardedly considering a slight increase in the city’s share of property taxes for 2016. During a recent workshop, the council considered a 3.02 percent increase in the city levy. The city plans to increase spending by 2.87 percent. The proposed hike will help fund an increase in aid to Green Isle Community School the city council believes is needed to keep the community charter school’s doors open. The council has to finalize its preliminary levy for 2016 by mid-September. The city is aware of tax hikes likely coming from Sibley County and an increase resulting from the Sibley East school bond. Council members hope to reduce the proposed property tax levy increase to below 3 percent, said Sibley County commissioners Mayor Dale ZumBerge. recently approved new tools for Next year’s final property tax sheriff’s deputies to use on land levy and budget must be set by and water. the end of December. The city plans to take in $489,573 in total revenue next year. Taxes ($383,075) and a 1.6 percent increase in state aid ($86,620) represent the biggest areas of revenue for the city. The city is planning to spend $455,873 in 2016. Offsetting the increase in school funding, Green Isle is reducing its spending on roads by 11.9 percent to $112,721. The city plans to spend over $59,950 on public safety (sheriff’s patrol and fire) in 2016, a 3 percent increase. Green Isle will also increase spending on its parks to $43,320 -- a 2.6 percent increase over 2015.
Sibley County Board OKs New Tools for Sheriff’s Office
The county board also approved the purchase of a 2015 River Pro Hipro 176 RCC boat and trailer for $35,000. It will be used in water patrol and rescue operations. The jet-propelled boat is wellsuited for Sibley County’s shallow lakes and rivers, Nienaber said. The Arlington Enterprise reported the county will offset the cost of the new boat by selling its existing boat.

Thirty Years Ago This Week
Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, It was Friday, August 14, 2015, 10 months since my Dad, Lloyd Latzke passed on to his heavenly home. Since I was driving through Belle Plaine to spend the weekend with my Mom I made a stop at Oakwood Cemetery to visit my Dad. I was in total disbelief when I stood at my Dad's grave; total disbelief of the condition of the cemetery grounds but especially the condition of my Dad's grave. Like I mentioned, it has been 10 months since my Dad passed away and his grave has been
90 Years Ago (1925)
Playoff Champs Neil’s Pub won the 1985 Belle Plaine men’s softball playoffs. Members of the team were front row, from left, Ed Sexe, Steve Lehman, Jack Schuneman, Dave Edberg, Pat Sexe, manager, and Doug Schultz. In the back row are Bob Tousley, Rick Edberg, Randy Saatzer, John Green, Lee Sauter, Tim Burns, Andy Sexe, Tom Herrmann and Ron Hawkins. Belle Plaine schools were set to open that coming Monday (Aug. 26) with an anticipated enrollment of 853 students, which would be down eight students from the previous year. Six new faculty members were hired for the 1985-86 school year. They were Mark Moselle (high school counselor), Lisa Schmidt (librarian), Helen Carr (high school teacher of the educable mentally handicapped), Sarajane Myers (high school mathematics), Cheri Hanna (Plus Program teacher) and Nancy Kopperud (junior and senior high chorus). Officials at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic School were expecting 85 students, and Trinity Lutheran School was forecasting 82. Teacher Ella Vogt, who left Trinity, would not be replaced. After 2 1/2 weeks of testimony from almost 30 witnesses, the special commission investigating charges of malfeasance against Scott County Attorney Kathleen Morrison ended that Monday. Commissioner Lynn Olson, the Anoka County District judge appointed to head the panel, said it would be about two months before the commission issued a report to Gov. Rudy Perpich on whether Morris should be removed from office. Simon Haefner, president of Haefner Enterprises in Belle Plaine, announced plans to construct an overnight campground south of Highway 169 off County Road 3. Haefner said 15 acres of land would comprise the campground. Kristin O’Connell, 20-yearold daughter of Michael and Phyllis O’Connell of Burnsville, would be buried at St. Thomas Cemetery, eight miles south of Belle Plaine, near her grandparents’ gravesite. Kristin’s body was found in a cornfield in New York state. Tests showed that although she had not been sexually molested, she may have died fighting off an assault. Police investigators were calling it a homicide, an act of random violence in the small village of Ovid, N.Y. A joint investigation con-
ducted by Scott and Dakota county sheriff’s deputies and Burnsville police resulted in the seizure of a large amount of marijuana and the arrest of a Burnsville man. Using a search warrant, authorities confiscated approximately 200 growing plants producing more than 200 pounds of salable marijuana. Searches in Scott and Dakota counties resulted in the seizure of hundreds of more pounds of marijuana. A grand reopening of Bob’s Bar in Belle Plaine would be held that coming Friday and Saturday to celebrate a remodeling and expansion that more than doubled its size. According to owner Bob Ruehling, the bar now encompassed 1,850 square feet. Opinions both for and against making a number of county offices appointive rather than elective were heard at a meeting of the Scott County Commission meeting in Belle Plaine. Charles Snyder, 73, passed away on Aug. 19 at the Mala Strana Nursing Home in New Prague. He was born in Marshall and moved to Belle Plaine in 1960. For the third year in a row, members of the Future Farmers of America in the Belle Plaine schools raised pheasants and released them into the wild. Paul Diers, son of Mr. and Mrs. Milan Diers, released 25 eightweek-old pheasants he raised from chicks along a fence line seven miles west of Belle Plaine. The Belle Plaine High School football team was scheduled to open the season Aug. 30 at Janesville. The 1985 Tigers had a lot more experience than the previous year’s team, according to coach Dale Pudlitzke. Returning lettermen were seniors Erick Lockrem, Joe Edberg, Brian Shaughnessy, Paul Pudlitzke, Maury O’Brien, Shawn Buesgens in the backfield; Chris Fogarty, Mike Wolf, Tim Bristlin, Todd Hardwick, Tim Hardwick and Brad Johnson on the line. Juniors who lettered the previous year were Kevin Jeurissen, Jay Denny, Scott Hennen and Matt Fogarty.

Belle Plaine public schools were scheduled to open Sept. 6 in their new building with 14 new teachers. M.G. Lindquist was superintendent and George Kartak principal. Maynard Harms was one of the new faculty members instructing the new agricultural department. A trio of Bongards entrants swept top honors in cheddar cheese judging at the 1955 Minnesota State Fair. Elroy Buesgens was awarded the high mark of 95.60. Finishing behind Buesgens, in order, were Roy Hartwig and Kenneth Zeller, who was 1954 champion. Miss Phyliss Bakehouse became the bride of Lorenzo Hillstrom at Owatonna. There was a break-in at Hespy’s Texaco oil station, which netted the burglar about $35 in cash and merchandise. Janeene Mahoney and Joann Hessian graduated from Mankato Teachers College. Mr. and Mrs. Gus Heuer celebrated their golden wedding anniversary at the home of their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Olie Sandvik, in South St. Paul. The Sullivan young folks of near Union Hill, plus some assists from the younger Sharkeys and Glisczinskis, practically took over the prizes in the 4-H exhibits at the Le Sueur County Fair in the swine and sheep divisions. A large number from here attended the wedding of William Shaughnessy to Donna Donnelly of St. Catherine’s. After a short wedding trip, they returned to Idaho, where the groom was stationed. At the Jordan Methodist Church took place the marriage of Amy Martha, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Leibbrand of St. Lawrence, and Robert Juni, son of Mr. and Mrs. William C. Juni of Jordan. At the Henderson Catholic Church took place the marriage of Patricia Christen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Christen of that city, to Cpl. Donald Graham, son of Mr. and Mrs. Kiernan Graham. The Model Clothing store, defending softball champions, won the first two games of the two-out-of-three play series to repeat as champs for the Belle Plaine softball crown. Miss Kay Seifert, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Seifert of Jordan, was named 1955 Miss Jordan. Princesses were Miss Sydne Ann Nolden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. S.O. Nolden, and Miss Beverly Beckman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Beckman Jr.

untouched since the day of his funeral. His grave has not been seeded let alone re-filled from the settling. The foot of Dad's grave is so settled and with a crevice so deep that it is a danger to visitors to the cemetery. The current grounds keeping of Oakwood Cemetery, with it's un-mowed and tangled grass, is of total disrespect to the many loved ones lying and resting there. I wonder how much longer my Dad will have to wait for the groomed grave that he deserves? Diane Latzke Sunderland Waconia, MN
Helping out North Dakota farmers with their grain harvest always drew groups of young fellows from here. That week five left for Church’s Ferry. Raiding apple orchards was a common occurrence but William C. Renike thought it was going too far when raiders broke into his enclosed porch and took basket and all of a hand-picked bushel. Kreft reported that the sidewalks were not included in the project’s preliminary report, pending review and recommendation from the public works committee and park board. The public works committee has since recommended that the final design consider sidewalks on East Forest Street from North Walnut Street to the eastern terminus. A couple of other property owners, including Ron Stier, expressed concern about drainage in the project area, which is prone to flash flooding during heavy rains. Public Works Superintendent Al Fahey and City Engineer Joe Duncan said they are aware of the drainage problems, which will be addressed in the final improvement plans. Property owner Jim Lange said some of the curbing on Oak Street still looks good and
questioned the need for all of it to be replaced. Duncan said some areas are better than others and it’s possible the city could consider spot replacement of the curbing. Duncan said that the project area will continue to be surveyed over the next several months before the final plans are brought to the council for approval or disapproval. If approved, the project will be advertised for bids and awarded sometime in early 2016, with construction starting in the spring. In other business Monday night, the council voted 4-1 to approve Ryan Herrmann’s request to amend the city code pertaining to bow hunting. Herrmann, who owns property located in the flood plain north of the railroad tracks, had contacted city staff on allowing bow (not firearms) hunting in the area. The current zoning ordinance does not allow hunting anywhere within the city limits. Bow and arrow shooting

City, County Reach Agreement on Enterprise Drive Overpass the city by Jan. 15, 2016. Other highlights of the agreement include: – The city seeks construction of an overpass across Highway 169 approximately 600 feet southwest of the intersection with County Highway 3, connecting County Highway 3 and Commerce Drive via an extension of Enterprise Drive. – The project lies within the corporate limits of the city of Belle Plaine. Construction is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2015. – The city agrees that the Orchard Street connection to County Highway 3 will be reconfigured in the future when
development occurs on the west side of County Highway 3, requiring either closure or realignment to the south. Meanwhile, the Minnesota Department of Transportation has pledged $702,000. The remaining estimated $4 million to $5 million needed to pay for construction will likely come from a combination of city funds on hand and issuance of a Municipal State Aid bond. Monday’s cooperative agreement with Scott County comes two weeks after the city reached an agreement with Ridgeview Medical Center, which plans to build a clinic near the overpass. It is purchasing the city-owned property for $1.

City Council (continued from page 1) is only permitted in a physical education program or at an authorized bow and arrow range such as the city’s recently opened Archery Park. “I am asking for permission to be able to have the use of bow and arrow, by permit only, on private properties zoned flood plain,” wrote Herrmann in his request to the city for the zoning amendment. He added that all permit applicants must be land owners or have written permission from a landowner, and all must abide by Minnesota DNR hunting regulations. Herrmann further explained that this area of land is “unique in itself in that it is located within the flood plain and has no chance of ever being developed. “The railroad tracks give a
definite and permanent boundary. Allowing by permit hunting only gives the city and landowners more control over the activities taking place on the properties. The layout of the land provides ample space for such activities,” concluded Herrmann. Two other property owners in the affected area, Virgil Stier and William Renne, wrote letters of support for Herrmann’s request. “I own land along the river and it is in the city limits. I would also like it open for bow hunting. My land would be more useful if someone could hunt on it,” stated Renne. City staff recommended approval of Herrmann’s request. Some of the conditions include:
– Allowed only on private property north of the railroad tracks (six property owners), all other property is owned by the city or DNR. – Must follow DNR regulations and seasons for hunting with bow and arrow. – If not the property owner, hunters must have written permission. – No trespassing signs must be installed. – Permission from landowner must be granted to recover wounded game. The council voted 4-1 to approve Herrmann’s request and staff’s recommendation. Council Member Cary Coop, who accounted for the only no vote, brought up a number of public safety concerns, ranging from the enforcement of no trespassing signs regarding juveniles to the pursuit of wounded game from area to another, all of which were addressed by Police Chief Tom Stolee. Due to the Labor Day holiday, the next regular meeting of the Belle Plaine City Council is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8 in the City Hall building at 218 North Meridian Street downtown.

Golf Course (continued from page 1) tively marketed for sale, Valley View Golf Course is reportedly available for sale. Some courses have food service offering sandwiches, salads or light meals while others have more formal sit-down dining. He’s not certain about a restaurant portion of a golf course.
‘A Lot of Golf Yet to Play’
Sauter said the group is not yet certain exactly what it would do or how it would manage or improve the operation if it were to acquire Valley View or any other golf course. Using a golf metaphor, “We’re on the fourth hole of a round and we’re feeling pretty good,” he said. “But there’s a lot of golf yet to play.” The group is working with a golf course marketing firm, a national firm that can put out “feelers” to courses that may be available for sale, Sauter said. He’s not aware of any courses in the area that are actively being marketed for sale at this time. The firm is also helping the group develop and refine a business operations plan should they be able to acquire a golf course. Sauter said the cost of a golf course could range from $1 to $10 million, depending on its condition, value and state of the business. The group wants to know if area residents are willing to support a local golf course. They’re hoping a survey will provide information that will help the group’s members make decisions on how to proceed. Their survey asks how many rounds a player plays each year, where a player most frequently plays, and if Valley View reopened in 2016, how often might a player play a round at the course. The survey also asks golfers if they found the price for golf and/or a gas-electric cart reasonable. The survey asks about a player’s interest in membership packages. It also queries a potential customer if the menu in a restaurant is a deciding factor in a decision where to play golf. “We’ll see what people have to say,” he said.

Superintendent’s Update
By Dr. Kelly Smith
Congratulations to Dr. Ryan Laager who was recently selected to serve as the next superintendent of the Belle Plaine Schools. Dr. Laager has a broad set of education experiences through his work as assistant superintendent for the Stillwater Area Schools and I am sure that he will do an outstanding job of leading our district forward in the coming years. Welcome to the Belle Plaine Schools, Dr. Laager! The start of the 2015-2016 school year is just three weeks away and after a long summer break it is sometimes difficult to get children (and parents) back into a school routine. Here are some suggestions to help with this process as suggested by WebMD. 1. Re-Establish School Routines - Use the last few weeks of summer to get into a school-day rhythm. "Have your child practice getting up and getting dressed at the same time every morning," suggests school psychologist Kelly Vaillancourt, MA, CAS. Start eating breakfast, lunch, and snacks around the times your child will eat when school is in session. It’s also important to get your child used to leaving the house in the morning, so plan morning activities outside the house in the week or two before school. That can be a challenge for working parents, says Vaillancourt, the director of government relations for the National Assoc. of School Psychologists. But when the school rush comes, hustling your child out the door will be less painful if she has broken summer habits like relaxing in her PJs after breakfast. 2. Nurture Independence - Once the classroom door shuts, your child will need to manage a lot of things on his own. Get him ready for independence by talking ahead of time about responsibilities he's old enough to shoulder. This might include organizing his school materials, writing down assignments, and bringing home homework, says Nicole Pfleger, school counselor at Nickajack Elementary School in Smyrna, GA. Even if your child is young, you can instill skills that will build confidence and independence at school. Have your young child practice writing her name and tying her own shoes. "The transition to school will be easier for everyone if your child can manage basic needs without relying on an adult," Pfleger says. 3. Create a Launch Pad - "Parents and teachers should do whatever they can to facilitate a child being responsible," says Pfleger, who was named School Counselor of the Year by the American School Counselor Association in 2012. At home, you can designate a spot where school things like backpacks and lunch boxes always go to avoid last-minute scrambles in the morning. You might also have your child make a list of things to bring to school and post it by the front door. 4. Set Up a Time and Place for Homework - Head off daily battles by making homework part of your child’s everyday routine. Establish a time and a place for studying at home. "Even if it’s the kitchen table, it really helps if kids know that’s where they sit down and do homework, and that it happens at the same time every day," says Pfleger. As much as possible, plan to make yourself available during homework time, especially with younger kids. You might be reading the paper or cooking dinner, but be around to check in on your child’s progress. 5. Talk to the Teachers - Of course, teachers are the reason your child is there. When you talk to your child’s teachers, ask about their approach to homework. Some teachers assign homework so kids can practice new skills while others focus on the accuracy of the assignments they turn in. Ask for the dates of tests and large assignments so you can help your child plan accordingly. As always, if you have any questions about school matters, please feel free to call me at 873-2400 or check our website at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us. You may also find me on Twitter at @BPTiger716. Kerfoot Zip Line Offers A Special Day, View of the Valley
Angela Haugen was looking for a memorable way to spend a day with her father before leaving for Army boot camp. The trip to Henderson-Belle Plaine area to spend the day at Kerfoot Canopy Tours proved to be a really good choice. Haugen and her father, Kim, recently drove from Leland, Iowa for the zip-line experience. Both gave Kerfoot a solid thumbs-up. “We wanted to do something fun,” Angela said. She also appreciated the ability to make reservations online and view information about Kerfoot Canopy Tours. “This was great. It was definitely worth the trip.” Located right off County Road 6 (Scenic Byway Road) just south of CR 6’s intersection with County Road 5 across the river from Blakeley village, Kerfoot Canopy Tours opened in June of 2013. Lee and Eva Kerfoot searched the area for over six months looking for just the right piece of land for a zip line course. They found it amongst the wooded bluff and ravines along the Minnesota River Valley. They have slowly built up the business, adding new lines. It started with 10 lines. Charges Will Not be Filed Against Deputy Who Shot Man
Cologne Puts Park Splash Pad on Hold, Will Aim for 2016
Carver County Attorney Mark Metz has announced that his office has declined to file criminal charges against a McLeod County deputy for an incident in which the deputy shot a man outside the Kwik Trip store in Norwood Young America around 2:40 a.m. on April 17. The incident involved an altercation between McLeod County Deputy Matthew Wyatt and a 23-year-old Michael Montgomery. After the Deputy attempted to prevent Montgomery from drinking and driving, a physical altercation ensued. During the physical altercation, Wyatt shot Montgomery once through his arm, resulting in a non-fatal injury. Wyatt suffered a concussion and other injuries from the altercation. Metz stated: “After a thorough and independent investigation, it became clear that no reasonable person could conclude that under these circumstances the police officer was not justified under Minnesota law in shooting the individual. “After meeting with numerous witnesses, including Deputy Wyatt, and evaluating the credibility of witnesses and the
evidence, there is no doubt that the deputy conducted himself lawfully and in accordance under Minnesota law regarding reasonable use of force.” Metz pointed out that an outside agency, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, conducted the extensive investigation, which included numerous witness statements, photographic and video evidence, medical reports and crime scene analysis. The Carver County Attorney’s Office also hired an independent expert in police use of force cases to review the shooting and provide an objective opinion. The expert concluded that the shooting under these circumstances was justified under Minnesota Law. Metz indicated that he could not comment further publicly on the facts of the case since a formal criminal complaint has been filed against Montgomery. Montgomery has been charged with felony assault on the deputy and misdemeanor driving under the influence. His first court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 4 at the courthouse in Chaska.
Proposed Splash Pad May Need New Home
from the manufacturer and site preparation work is ready to commence. The discovery has the city council wondering if it should be shoehorned into a small space near the concession shack overlooking Fritz Field. A fence will encircle the concrete slab. But the arrangement would be tight, at best, and likely create parking conflicts on the growing number of summer days when Fritz Field hosts a ballgame, said Scott Rynerson, a member of the city’s parks commission.
It was proposed as an amenity that would keep families in town supporting local businesses during the summer months. But in Cologne, city leaders are wondering where the new splash pad will eventually land. Firearms and muzzleloader hunters who want to harvest antlerless deer throughout much of Minnesota this hunting season are reminded they must purchase their license and apply for an antlerless permit by Thursday, Sept. 10, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said. Antlerless deer permits are issued by lottery in designated permit areas. Some areas that have not been in the lottery classification in recent years are in that classification this year, primarily as a result of new deer population goals. “Hunters should review the hunting and trapping regulation book now,” said Leslie McInenly, big game program leader with the DNR. “The lottery applies to over half of the state permit areas this year, and Alex Leaf of Champlin caught the biggest carp in this year’s it’s important to start planning Belle Plaine River Fishin Contest, which was good for $300. (continued from page 13) new players to the pitching staff. With the second overall pick, the Tigers selected Trevor Vaubel of the Gaylord Islanders, whom BP also drafted last year. With the fifth overall pick, New Ulm’s Nick Dewanz got the call, and the final selection at No. 8 overall was Jordan Sinell of the Le Sueur Braves. Welcome to Tigertown! In other Region 6C action, St. Peter rebounded from last week’s loss to Belle Plaine to beat Gaylord 2-1 and secure its first back-to-back state tourney berths since 1979-80. The Saints play the game before Belle Plaine’s on Sunday, in Watkins, against Waconia of Region 7. Jordan has a firstround bye and awaits the winner of Hamburg and Chokio on August 30. If the Tigers can whip the Buttermakers, they will play next on Aug. 30 in Cold Spring against the Hampton Cardinals, the top seed from Region 4 and also the victims of Brett Kruschke’s first town team win back in 1992. Watkins has revamped their ballpark, so follow the boys north on Sunday. Jordan 11, Tigers 1 Fresh off securing a state tournament berth the week before, your hometown nine headed to Jordan to take on the Brewers in the Region 6C championship. The Tigers outhit the Brewers but were otherwise altogether inferior, and not a whole lot more needs to be said. Derek Dahlke started on the mound and struggled, going four-plus innings while giving up five runs (four earned) and an uncharacteristic six walks. Ben Wagner was up next, going one-plus innings while yielding four earned runs. Jonny Vinkemeier provided two much-needed shutout frames and was followed by Zac Dahlke, who got two outs while giving up two unearned runs. Chase Emmers faced the last two batters before Jordan implemented the 10-run rule in the eighth inning.
The Tigers collected eight hits on the day, with Wagner socking a pair of doubles among his three hits. Travis Latzke had two safeties with Pat Schultz, Matt Schultz and Wes Sarsland each collecting one. Jordan catcher Trent Simek, it should be noted, celebrated his 40th birthday with a long ball over the left-field wall and postgame cupcakes. 2015 Town Tigers Results and Remaining Schedule May 1 vs. Prior Lake L 6-3 May 3 at Chaska L 12-2 May 8 vs. Plato L 12-1 May 22 vs. Shakopee L 9-1 May 23 at Henderson W 10-4 May 31 vs. Fairfax W 2-1 June 2 at Victoria L 14-4 June 5 vs. Henderson L 12-10 June 7 at St. Peter L 10-1 June 12-14 Tigertown Classic vs. Renner L 8-7 vs. Hayfield L 9-4 vs. St. Louis P. Gray Tigers Baseball
Gray Tigers Rout Edina by Mike Zellmann The Belle Plaine Gray Tigers (over age 35) baseball team won its final game of the regular season by 12-1 against Edina Friday night. The Gray Tigers have been seeded No. 15 for the state senior baseball Class A and AA tournament and will host a game this weekend. Burnsville is the No. 1 seed, followed by Cold Spring and Minnetonka. Brackets for the two-week-long tournament were not available by Tuesday’s press time but can be found on the Minnesota Senior Men’s Amateur Baseball website. Saturday’s games will be at noon, 2:30, 5:00 and 7:30 p.m. Games on Sunday will be at 11 a.m., 1:30, 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. Games will be hosted by Belle Plaine, Jordan, Waconia, Cologne and St. Peter. Gray Tigers 12, Edina 1 Belle Plaine was missing three of its top four pitchers Friday night but still had ace Terry Knop to send to the hill. It was
like he was back in old form as he allowed only four hits. The Gray Tigers used some interchangeable parts as Brian Morrison made his debut at second base and Paul Fogarty at shortstop. Belle Plaine’s scoring started in the second inning with a lead-off single by Mike Zellmann and walks to Jeff Fahey and Morrison, which brought up Justin Johnston for one of his three appearances with the bases loaded. He grounded into a fielder’s choice to score one run, and a single by Brett Kruschke tallied another. The Grays erupted for seven runs in the third inning with singles by Burgemeister, Fogarty, Knop, Fahey and Johnston, who put the “touchdown” on the scoreboard. The Grays pushed the game to the 10-run rule with a double by Knop, who was 4-for-4 on the night. After walks to Fahey and Morrison, Kruschke would put the final notch on the scoreboard at 12-1.

Tigers Open Season Saturday by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School football team will commence a new era of Minnesota high school football when it travels to Norwood Young America for a 7 p.m. kickoff this Saturday against the Raiders. As part of a statewide restructuring, the Minnesota River Conference (for football only) has been disbanded and the Tigers are a member of the South Central District, which includes many of the same rivals of years past. Included are Jordan, Le Sueur-Henderson, Mayer Lutheran, Norwood Young America, Sibley East and TriCity United. Other member schools include Albert Lea, Blue Earth Area, Fairmont, Gibbon-FairfaxWinthrop, Jackson County Central, Lake Crystal-WellcomeMemorial, Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity, Luverne, Maple River, Marshall, Martin County West, NRHEG, New Ulm, Pipestone, Redwood Valley, St. James, The Belle Plaine High School volleyball team, coming off conference and section champion- St. Peter, Waseca, WatervilleElysian-Morristown, Windom ships and a third-place showing at last year’s state tournament, could be even stronger this Area and Worthington. season with all its firepower back, including all-state hitter Mariena Hayden, who is pictured in the middle of the pack but quite visible during a few laps around the gym Monday. Most of them are larger schools than Belle Plaine is accustomed to playing in the MRC. The Tigers return a number of key players from last year’s squad, which finished the regular season 3-5, followed by two postseason victories before losing to Blue Earth Area in the

Section 3AAA championship game in Blue Earth on Halloween night. Among those gone from the 2014 team are all-conference honorees Ben Stier (running back and linebacker) and Alec Selly (offensive lineman and linebacker). Nine other Tigers also graduated. Leading the cast of returnees this season is three-time allconference quarterback Luke Narveson, who also plays defensive back and punted last year. He threw for over 1,400 yards, including 16 touchdowns in 2014. He also piled up nearly 700 yards and scored 13 TDs on the ground. Narveson, a senior, will have plenty of experience to throw to as wide receivers Paul Nasby, Jonny Vinkemeier and Branden Schulz are returning starters. Other regulars back on offense are senior Josh Juaire (right tackle), senior Tyler Grieves (right guard), and sophomore running backs Carter Brink and Marcus Walsh. Grieves was allconference honorable mention last season. Defensively, starters returning include linemen Juaire and Grieves; linebackers Alec Ruud, Dylan Johnson and Danny McCann; and defensive backs Schulz and Nasby. Other letter winners back include Josiah Schatz, a 6-7, 310pound lineman; Shane Buege (running back and linebacker); Ruben Baltierrez (running back, linebacker and kicker); Jeremy Buszmann (running back and linebacker); Wally Schultz (running back and linebacker);
Taylor Yahnke (lineman); and Nathan Herman (wide receiver and defensive back). “We have a lot of experience back at key positions and a four-year starter at quarterback, which is very uncommon in high school football. We have a lot of guys back with a lot of game experience,” said Tigers coach Justin Johnston. As for concerns, Johnston said one would have to be the “unknown,” referring to the new-look schedule in the South Central District. “Just learning new opponents and, of course, playing bigger schools. But we are excited for the challenge.” The Tigers’ captains are Narveson, Juaire, Grieves, Yahnke and Vinkemeier. There are almost 70 players in grades 9-12 out for football this season. Assisting Johnston in the program are Pat Schultz (codefensive coordinator), Adam Smith (co-defensive coordinator), Charlie Kern (varsity assistant), Brad Narveson (varsity assistant), John Ristvedt (junior varsity defensive coordinator), Josh Otto (junior varsity offensive coordinator) and Joe Ploetz (special teams coordinator). 2015 BPHS Football Schedule Aug. 22 at Norwood YA Aug. 28 vs. Albert Lea Sept. 4 at Jordan Sept. 11 at Waseca Sept. 18 vs. New Ulm Sept. 25 at Tri-City United Oct. 2 vs. St. Peter Oct. 9 vs. Marshall Oct. 14 Start Section Tourn.

by Brett Kruschke and Mike Schultz The Tiger Train might not have the steam she ordinarily does at this time of year, as Belle Plaine putts into Sunday’s state tournament game against the Hadley Buttermakers with a 10-19 record. But the Tigers have punched their ticket none-
theless, and will take their first cracks as one of Class C’s final 48 teams at 5 p.m. Sunday in Watkins. While the Tigers are making their eighth state tourney appearance in the last nine years, this is Hadley’s first trip to the grand playoff since 2003. The Buttermakers are the third seed
out of Region 13, where they finished behind No. 1 seed Luverne and runner-up Fairmont. Following last Saturday’s 11-1 loss to the Jordan Brewers, the Region 6C draft was held and Belle Plaine welcomed some

34.60-pound flathead caught by Joe Swalve of Janesville. Nick Barlage of Green Isle also won $200 for reeling in the biggest catfish that was not a flathead – a 15.70-pound channel cat. Alex Leaf of Champlin won even more than that ($300) with this year’s biggest carp, which weighed 11.40 pounds. A number of anglers stated that carp were difficult to come by Greg O’Brien of Belle Plaine took second place in this year’s this year, which will go down Belle Plaine River Fishin’ Contest with this 41.15-pound flat- as one of the hottest (day and head.
A record 271 anglers took part in this year’s Belle Plaine River Fishin’ contest, by boat and ashore. Pictured at right is Kristan Maccaroni of the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources who saw to it that most of the fish brought to Court Square Park Saturday were returned “alive and well” to the Minnesota River. Assigned with the same task from the DNR was Tony Sindt, who is pictured below. Observing the process were Blake Skelley and his cousin, Maeve. Contest rules state that fish must be carried to the weigh-in point in coolers or other suitable containers. These fish are the responsibility of the contestants. The goal is to return as many healthy fish as possible to the river. Partial proceeds from the Minnesota River Fishin’ Contest go to Belle Plaine area youth outdoor training programs.
night) Belle Plaine River Fishin’ contests of all time. As for Baynes and this year’s $2,000 fish, he said he caught it about 10:30 p.m. Friday near St. Peter. He used a 10-inch sucker minnow for bait. Baynes said it wasn’t the biggest flathead he ever caught. He caught one on Father’s Day of 2013 that weighed 57-pounds, 13 ounces, which had he caught this past weekend, would have shattered the Belle Plaine River Fishin’ Contest record for a flathead, which was a 52.70pounder caught by Mike Stuewe in 2013. O’Brien said “it was still light out” Friday when he caught his Alumacraft canoe-winning flathead in the Henderson area using a creek chub for bait. After getting the fish into the boat, the next step was to keep it healthy through the night for Saturday’s weigh-in at Court Square Park, the Belle Plaine River Fishin’ Contest headquarters. A total of nine flatheads weighed at least 31.90 pounds this year. Another seven weighed between 20.95 and 29.35 pounds. Some $4,000 in cash and prizes was distributed in various categories. Members of the DNR were on the scene throughout the day to periodically return the fish, which were kept alive in a large
live-well tank, to the river. Matt Hennen of Jordan, who is a teacher at Belle Plaine High School, caught this year’s second-largest channel catfish (14.25). But it may not be the fish that Hennen will remember the longest about his night on the river, but rather the meteor shower he observed in the dark, clear sky Friday and early Saturday. The meteor event Hennen was referring to is the annual August Perseid meteor shower, which takes place much of the month. It is often described as “the best meteor shower of the year and a sky highlight of Northern Hemisphere summers.” “We saw probably 30 to 40 falling stars,” said Hennen,
adding that “except for the bugs and the heat to start out, you couldn’t have asked for a better night.” Following Saturday’s fish weigh-in deadline, Marc Hollahan of Jordan successfully defended his Keg Throwing Contest championship. Winning the Tobacco Spitting Contest was Dusty Hafner from the Minnetonka area. Partial proceeds from the Minnesota River Fishin’ Contest go to Belle Plaine area youth outdoor training programs. In the past year, the contest has helped sponsor the Scott County Sheriff’s Youth Fishing Derby, gun training and the trap shooting team from Belle Plaine.
