Caycie Volek knows telling her daughter, Presley, ‘no’ doesn’t always make for a quick resolution. Once Presley sets her mind to something, she’s not about to settle for anything less than what she wants. With school starting in about a month, Volek recently set her mind on making sure every child who needs a backpack and school supplies has the requisite tools for the opening day, Sept. 8. But here’s what makes her insistence unique. The daughter of Caycie and Nick Volek, Presley is 5 years old. She’ll be in kindergarten at Chatfield Elementary School. She is energetic, precocious, curious, talkative and bighearted. She hasn’t yet learned to filter the emotions she wears on her sleeve. Ask her a question and you’ll get an answer. “She’s always been that way,”

Scott County Board OKs Advance Funding for B.P. Overpass Despite concerns the county board might be violating a policy by providing $700,000 in advance funding of the Belle Plaine overpass of Highway 169 just south of County Road 3, the county board Tuesday agreed to provide the money before construction begins. Commissioners voted 4-1 to provide the money when the bids for the $7 million project are awarded, but no earlier than Jan. 1, 2016. Previously, the county had considered holding off its share of funding until the project was completed. The board agreed to help fund the project earlier this year, said County Administrator Gary Shelton. Commissioner Jon Ulrich of Savage said the $700,000 is scheduled for 2016 and should not be delivered until next year.

Belle Plaine plans to open bids Sept 2. City Administrator Holly Kraft told commissioners the Belle Plaine City Council will consider approving a bid at its Sept. 8 meeting.

by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine City Council Monday night saw to it that land obtained by the city previously with the intent of building a full-scale bridge and interchange on it will instead become a medical clinic. After learning a couple of years ago that the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/ DOT) would “not” allow the construction of the bridge and interchange where Highway 169 and County Road 3/Meridian Street intersect straight on, staff and members of the council, including Mayor Mike Pingalore, began to pursue the possibility of locating an overpass a little further down the southbound lane of Highway 169, with accesses from both

okayed the initial step in forming a letter of understanding, Ridgeview Medical Center Vice President John Prondzinski told the council that Ridgeview is “very excited about the opportunity to bring its services to the Belle Plaine community and compliment those already here.” “If the bridge was already there, we’d like to be breaking ground now,” Prondzinski said. Prondzinski was in attendance again Monday night but no discussion took place prior to the council’s 5-0 vote to move forward. Other highlights of the purchase agreement include: – The city will have an American Land Title Association sur-

That’s the plan now in place and the two parcels the city had set aside to make room for the original overpass/interchange plan will be purchased for $1 by Ridgeview Medical Center. Monday’s vote to okay the agreement was unanimous. One of the main reasons Mn/ DOT would not allow an overpass/interchange where Highway 169 directly connects with County Road 3 is that it’s not spaced far enough from the existing overpass/interchange in Belle Plaine. In return for selling the land for a buck, Ridgeview agrees to begin construction of a medical clinic building on the property “within a reasonable period of time” following the start of construction of the city’s adjacent bridge project. Crash, Fire at 169 Intersection Belle Plaine firefighters and police responded to a two-car crash Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Highway 169 and Delaware Avenue (County Road 59) in St. Lawrence Township. The crash closed the intersection, which was already busy with traffic leaving the Scott-Carver Threshers Festival. The crash occurred at 4:05 p.m. when a vehicle heading south on Highway 169 occupied by a driver and passenger hit a vehicle heading north on the highway making a left turn onto Delaware Avenue. The driver of the northbound vehicle failed to yield the right of way to the southbound vehicle, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. The southbound vehicle caught fire after the crash. The three people involved were all transported to St. Francis Regional Medical Center in Shakopee by ambulance. Two of them had serious injuries and one had minor injuries, according to the state patrol. Names of the vehicles’ occupants were not released.

A Colorful Fund-raiser Jacob Roberts was among the approximate 150 runners participating in Saturday’s Scott West 5K Color Run/Walk, proceeds from which will benefit the Scott West wrestling program. As Roberts neared the end of the run, he was doused in colored chalk by volunteers Becca and Chad Williams. Roberts, a 2005 graduate of Jordan High School, was the first to finish the 5K route. Death

James W. Erhardt James W. Erhardt, 68, of Belle Plaine passed away Thursday, July 16, 2015, at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis. A Memorial Service will be held this Saturday, August 8 at 2 p.m. from the Wagner Funeral Home of Belle Plaine. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Memorial Service at the funeral home in Belle Plaine. Immediately following the Service, there will be a gathering/ luncheon served at the funeral home. The family prefers memorials in lieu of flowers. There will be a private family burial at a later date. He was born in Minneapolis on June 17, 1947 the son of Thomas and Leone (Anderson). He was raised and attended school in the Minneapolis area. James, a veteran, served two calls of duty in Vietnam and received an honorable discharge. On November 27, 1982, he married Wendy Peterson of Minneapolis at the Mount Olivet Lutheran Church in Richfield. Together they made their home, first in Burnsville and later moved to Belle Plaine. He was a man of many trades and was always willing to help anyone in any way he could. If there was a problem in the neighborhood, everyone always seemed to ask Jim for his assistance or advice. If he did not know the answer, he always seemed to find a way to discover the answer. In his spare time, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was not much of a sports fan, but did enjoy supporting the Vikings. Jim was a wonderful husband, father and brother-in-law. Jim is survived by his wife, Wendy; and son Joseph, both of Belle Plaine; and three grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Leone.

New Prague Man Found Dead The New Prague Police Department was notified on Aug. 1 that the Le Sueur County Sheriffs Department was called to the Chadderdon State Wildlife Management Area (southeast of Le Center) regarding a red jeep located by hikers. Upon deputy’s arrival, a 2000 red Jeep Cherokee was located. Inside the vehicle was a deceased male believed to be Anthony (Tony) James Slavik, 31,

of New Prague. Slavik was reported missing on July 18 and the New Prague Police Department issued a National Missing Person Report alert. The located body was transported to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office in St. Paul for an autopsy and positive identification. No foul play is suspected in this incident.

Highway 169 Project Begins Monday in Le Sueur Motorists will encounter lane restrictions on Highway 169 near Le Sueur beginning Monday (Aug. 10) during construction of a J-turn at the highway’s intersection with Le Sueur County Road 28 and Pumpkin Hill Road. The middle lane of both northbound and southbound Highway 169 will be closed and speeds reduced until work is complete at the end of August. The project includes building a raised island, special left turn lanes and a U-turn to improve safety at the intersection. Highway 169 motorists will experience no changes, but motorists on County Road 28 will need to turn right to make a left or cross the highway.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) refers to these (J-turn intersections) as reduced conflict intersections because a typical four-lane divided highway intersection has 42 possible vehicle conflict points and the RCIs with U-turns have only 24 conflict points. RCIs create less delay and fewer crashes than a stop light and cost only a fraction of an interchange The construction is part of a project to improve safety on the highway and manage access in the Le Sueur area for proposed economic development. Funding was provided through a transportation economic development grant.

FISH Aims to Help People Be Fully Ready for Retirement Families and Individuals Sharing Hope (FISH) is hosting an information session about approaching retirement without fear at an upcoming community meeting Thursday, Aug. 13, in Prior Lake. Former Scott County Court Services Director, Dave Loftness, along with his wife Mary will be digging into the topic of retirement beyond finances. Loftness and his wife “started to notice within several months of retirement that something was missing. “We learned some things in retirement the hard way,” he said. “We found that most of the preparations we had made for retirement was focused solely on the financial aspects, and didn’t address the importance of the emotional adjustment with getting used to retired living.” The couple has been sharing their experience, including the physical, psychological aspects

of how their lives have changed in an effort to prepare attendees for a successful and rewarding transition to retirement. Beth Loechler, FISH’s executive director, says the organization recognizes aging as a community care issue that can be supported by increased awareness. “We are fortunate to have the Dave and Mary’s expertise as a local resource. This program will include useful information for faith, business, non-profits, and local government,” she said

(continued from page 1) plans to use county, state and city funding as well as bond proceeds to pay for the project. “Belle Plaine had asked that the payment be made toward the front end of the project,” Shelton said. Board members previously indicated concern the funding might not be used for construction costs or that the project is delayed. Commissioner Barbara Marschall of Prior Lake, the lone vote against the advance funding, was to follow Mn/ DOT’s policy of providing funding for a project later in the construction process. “I think it would be a mistake to deviate from our past practice. I think we have a policy for a reason,” she said. County staff indicated providing advance funding is not a violation of county policy and that the county has a history of working cooperatively with the cities and townships in Scott County. The county has previously provided advance funding for significant projects around the county. “There is no policy set in stone, one way or the other,” said Deputy Administrator Lezlie Vermillion.

In November 2014, Jacobs was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He has undergone chemo and radiation and currently has a chemo procedure where doctors are injecting chemo directly into his brain. He also currently wears a mesh hat with electrodes, designed to help confuse cancer cells so they don’t spread. Jacobs’ medical bills are close to a quarter million dollars – and rising. there were a few minor adjustments. Frank Monzel Sr., well known to many in Belle Plaine where he had been a visitor for many years, died at the hospital in St. Paul at the age of 88. His wife was the former Mary Schmitt of Belle Plaine. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wolpern, who were married in Belle Plaine 25 years previous, celebrated their silver wedding at the Ledebur Country Club in Fairmont. The A.F. Dressen family of Blakeley held a reunion at the Belle Plaine park. A picnic dinner and supper were served. The elders played cards and movie pictures were taken. Over 120 persons gathered at the Belle Plaine park for a reunion of the Solheid families. All 10 children of the late Peter Solheid were still living and all but one was present. There was a picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Galvin, nee Lillian Pendy, at their home in Waverly. The guest of honor was their daughter, Sister Rose Leonard of St. Joseph Order, St. Paul. George Welch, district maintenance engineer at Virginia since 1953, was called to the central highway ofďŹ ce in St. Paul to succeed George A. Meskal, who became chief maintenance engineer. Engineer Welch was a former resident of Belle Plaine, husband of the former Genevieve Lynch. Miss Emily Lou Bristol, daughter of Mrs. Elsie Bristol, became the bride of Robert J. Soller, son of Mrs. Anne Soller, at St. Peter and Paul’s Catholic Church. Indy The Joe Fogarty and Loren Jones herd of registered Holsteins ranked among the top ďŹ ve in Scott County herds on tests with the dairy herd improvement association during July. Eunice Rolf, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Rolf of Hancock Township, attended Island Camp at Henning and took part in the youth leaders’ conference. Herald She attended the camp on a scholarship she was awarded at Concordia Teachers College, Seward, Neb.

90 Years Ago (1925)

With the state getting ready to let contract for the paving of the highway through Belle Plaine, property owners on the route who had no water main and sewer connections were ordered to make those connections at once. Dr. Roger Kennedy, who had been associated here with Dr. von Bohland for a time, was married that week to Miss Ellen McGinn in Minneota. Dr. KenNuggeta member of nedy had become

the Mayo staff at Rochester. At Trinity Lutheran Church took place the marriage of Miss Bertha, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Sielaff, to Raymond G. Behmier, formerly of Jordan. The couple established their home in Minneapolis. P.H. Donovan accompanied other Buick dealers on a trip to Flint and Detroit, Mich., making the trip over the Great Lakes from Duluth. Mr. and Mrs. John Mangan of near Assumption departed for their new home in California. Will McCarthy, Mrs. Mangan’s brother, accompanied them to make his home in the West also. And the M.C. McCarthy family, then located at Beach, N.D., were also to join them in the Oakland, Calif., neighborhood. Relatives and friends in large numbers turned out to give Mrs. Caroline Malz a big surprise party on her 66th birthday. In St. Paul took place the marriage of Miss Grace Lawrence, only daughter of Mrs. Matt Lawrence, to Burton Bolz, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bolz of Jordan. Tom Carr was the only one from Belle Plaine to take advantage of the Omaha railroad’s $8 round-trip excursion to Chicago. The response from other places required the railroad to run several sections of 13 coaches each. Fred Latzke, who lost his barns in Kelso Township in the big June storm, was replacing the barns with the most modern in that section. Driveways running the entire length of the building were installed. Alvin Larson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Larson of Jessenland, and Miss Ruby Coon of Minneapolis were married and left on a trip to Yellowstone Park. Frank Schilz of Schmidt’s garage took out the service truck to pull out a Renville car that had landed 20 feet down from the road. When the Renville man was all straightened out and ready to go, he unintentionally put the car in reverse and shot back into the same hole. Tom Barten, 22, of Union Hill, was hospitalized following an automobile collision, and for a time his chance to recover was doubtful. It was ďŹ nally decided to move the Le Sueur County Fair from Le Sueur to Le Center. Le Sueur was one of the pioneer towns in the fair business but did not get cooperation from the rest of the county. Clarence Mellgren and Orrin Melberg, battery for a combined East and West Union ball team, won two games in one afternoon, defeating Waconia and Cologne.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, In the past four years, the BellePlaine Food Shelf has been fortunate to receive many donations of food. During the month of August, we are trying a different type of campaign. August 26th is "National Toilet Paper Day." In honor of this day, we are trying to see how much paper we can collect for the Food Shelf. Toilet Paper, Paper towels, and Kleenex are expensive for us to buy, and we rarely see it donated. Consequently, we are asking people, during the month of August, when you buy paper for yourself, feel free to pick up a little extra for the Food Shelf. Drop it off at the Food Shelf between 5-7 p.m. on Wednesdays or between 9-12 on Saturday mornings. You can also leave it at your church and we will pick it up there. We appreciate everyone's help with this. Let's make it a huge success! Betsy Ollhoff President BP Food Shelf

Dear Editor, Hysteria, revolting, reprehensible, havoc, despicable, tools of death, cruelty, murderous activity. These words are in response to the killing of Zimbabwe’s Cecil the lion. I have not seen the same outrage against Planned Parenthood and their selling of baby parts. Why not? Unborn babies can legally be killed right up to the day of their birth without consequence. Shouldn’t there be outrage in that? The man who killed Cecil is in hiding for fear of his life. We treat animals with more respect and compassion than we do our own young. Isn’t that sad? Sincerely, Sandy Schroers, Belle Plaine

Jerry Kucera Recounts His Day at Bar-B-Q Days

While struggling over what to write, it occurred to me that since I have lived in the country for about 25 years, I no longer think in terms of city blocks for walking or riding, but on BarB-Q Days Saturday it all came back to me when I went to Belle Plaine, my hometown. Guessing that I couldn’t get much closer, I parked at the end of a street and walked the remaining blocks to the park. I park across the street from a house once owned by my high school principal. I notice that the toilet paper no longer hangs in the trees. As I walk further, I see the warming house for the ice skating rink and I imagine the odor of wet socks still lingers inside. I cross the street where the high school is on one side and the elementary on the other. For a moment I am back in Mr. Peterson’s sixth grade class and my ďŹ rst “classroom partyâ€?. It’s Halloween and music is played on a portable record player. The high school I attended is hidden behind an addition that was added many years after I graduated. Still, in my mind, I can see the halls and hear the sound of slamming lockers. Once inside the park, I check in at the barbecue stand; one of the best spots to volunteer during the weekend is behind that counter. As I gaze across the park, I see the other food stands, the games, the folks milling about, and I listen to the “Church of Cash,â€? a Johnny

Cash tribute band. People come by and give me their tickets in exchange for a sandwich, pop or water. Plus, I give them a little conversation – no extra charge. I get to talk to a lot of people – some I know, some I don’t. The time passes quickly as I enjoy the company of Shirley, who is also working the counter. Shirley, along with her husband and ďŹ ve young children, lived in the neighborhood where I grew up. My younger brother and I played with her boys and her daughter graduated with my younger sister. When I got home from the park Saturday, I sat down and read from the “Letters of E.B. White.â€? It’s a collection of hundreds of letters White wrote over the years. In 1956, he wrote to a woman, “I tend to write about events or circumstances that raise the level of my perception.â€? I liked it so much I reread it out loud to my wife. Today, as I write about the events of yesterday, I think of something my friend, Pat, told me he had heard somewhere. “The most unordinary thing in the world is two ordinary people, a husband and wife, working hard to support their family and raise their children to be good people.â€? Talking with Shirley made me realize that she and I had the same goal: to raise our children to be good people. I wish that were as ordinary as writer’s block.

Communicate your wishes. You need to communicate to your loved ones the actions you have taken regarding your will, living trust and other estate-planning documents. By explaining your wishes in advance, you may be able to help your family members avoid disputes and unpleasant surprises — and that lack of “drama” can also be a key part of your legacy. What Will Be Your Legacy Month will come and go. But by definition, your legacy will last beyond your lifetime — so make it a good one.

saw deer and other forest animals on the trails and deer running ahead of their bikes before leaping back into the woods. Audrey Zurn spent Saturday at St Joe’s with Nick and Katelyn Zurn. They enjoyed biking the Wobegon trail up to Avon. The trail is very well traveled by many bikers, runners and roller bladers. Nick’s friend Stephanie VanBeek and her parents Mike and Belinda from Monticello also joined the Zurn family on the bike trail. A few from the area enjoyed the Giant Days parade on Sunday. The parade was wonderful with many marching bands from the Govern air res from St. Peter, to the Schell’s Hobo Band, to the Su Fu Du Drum Corp from Sioux Falls, SD. Some of the marching bands performed in the park after the parade. The sweet corn feed in the park was very well attended. Humor Corner: Ole and Lena were so simple that they thought Ernest Tubb was a sincere place to bathe. They thought Johnny Cash was money for a pay toilet, they thought Slim Whitman was a thin box of chocolate. Ole closed his eyes in Sears when he saw a sign that said “Women’s Bloomers - Half Off.” They thought Gerald Ford was a car agency and that Taco Bell was a Mexican Telephone Company.

Grandson Tim Wolff gave an informational run-down of the last Burns Reunion at Sibley Park, 59 years ago, June 27, 1956, when a heavy hail storm, as the storm went through St. Thomas electricity went out the night of the 1956 reunion. Tim Burns, Sr., got up early the next morning, knowing the crops in his son, Timmy’s, fields were a total loss. They needed to replant. Alice watched as Tim left their yard, driving out the driveway on the Minneapolis Moline tractor, pulling a disc to their son’s field less than ½ mile away. The rest is family history, many at the gathering added their perspective, while historians recorded. Many questions and many details were learned of their beloved grandfather’s and great-grandfather’s accident. Among them, how hot and humid it was, and how terrible the mosquitoes were that final week in June of 1956. Details that will fade away with time. Traditional host family booklets were handed out and a potluck lunch was served. That’s all folks. Have a good one.

City Council (continued from page 1) vey of the property prepared. – The city will remove up to 60,000 cubic yards of soil for use on the overpass project. – Full access on West Commerce Drive will be permitted and constructed at Ridgeview’s cost. – Ridgeview will pay all fees associated with the development of the site. – The city will work with Ridgeview on the platting and planned unit development processes. – The planned closing date is Dec. 1, 2015. City Engineer Joe Duncan reported Monday that the ďŹ nal design submittal package for the Highway 169 overpass and Enterprise Drive extension project was recently delivered to Mn/DOT. Once all signatures have been secured on the title sheet, a letting date will be established and the project will be advertised for competitive bids. Completion of the project is scheduled for fall of 2016, with an intermediate completion of the approach embankments to subgrade elevation late this fall. In other business Monday night, the council unanimously authorized the purchase of a 2015 plow truck from Astleford International at the state bid price of $78,273.76, and an additional expenditure of $87,111 for the purchase and installation of the equipment. Public Works Superintendent Al Fahey reported that the current 2004 International truck and plow equipment is up for replacement. “This truck was scheduled to be replaced last year, but due to emission compliance issues, we have waited until this year. I believe the truck manufacturers have worked through the majority of the compliance problems.â€? Fahey said there is $165,000 in the city’s capital improvement fund for the purchase of the new truck and equipment. *Set Sept. 21 as the date for the ďŹ nal assessment public hearing for this year’s street utility and improvement project. All affected property owners are invited to attend the hearing, and if they like, comment on their assessment. The hearing will begin shortly after 6:30 p.m. The project, which consists of street reconstruction and utility improvements on Forest Street West between Grove Street and

the railroad right-of-way, and Elk Street between Court and Forest streets (one block), is nearing completion. The total estimated cost of the project was $1,295,000, approximately one-third of which will be assessed to beneďŹ ting property owners. The city, which owns Fountain Park in the project area, will pick up the rest of the tab. The actual ďŹ nal cost of the project and assessments will be known at the public hearing. City Engineer Joe Duncan reported Monday that contractor Chard Tiling and Excavating is continuing work on Forest and Elk streets, and that all underground utilities have been installed and the street aggregate base has been constructed. He added that poor soils were encountered throughout the project, with the worst lying west of Cherry Street. “Additional excavation to replace these poor soils and bolster the typical section was necessary to produce a street that would carry the intended loadings,â€? Duncan reported. The substantial completion date for the project is Aug. 28. Substantial completion in this case means that all streets in the project area will be ready for use. Other minor, punch-list type work will be completed at a later date. *Unanimously appointed Nathan Shutes to the Belle Plaine Economic Development Authority (EDA). He will serve the remainder of Mike Jacobs’ term, which expires Jan. 31, 2019. Jacobs recently resigned from the EDA after he announced he was moving to Burnsville. *Unanimously appointed William Vendel and John Gulden as part-time ofďŹ cers for the Belle Plaine Police Department. They will receive $12 per hour, which will go up to $18.82 per hour after successful completion of the ďŹ eld training course. Part-time ofďŹ cers do not receive beneďŹ ts and do not work a regularly-scheduled shift. They are utilized to cover vacation, sick time and special city events. *Unanimously approved pay request No. 2 by Chard Tiling and Excavating for $365,956 for work on the 2015 street and utility improvement project. The next regular meeting of the Belle Plaine City Council is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Aug. 17 in the City Hall building at 218 North Meridian Street downtown.

Gaylord, School District OK Land Swap for Medical School Hoping to help bring a medical school to Gaylord and help the Sibley East School District move forward with its school construction plans, the Gaylord City Council recently approved a land swap that will serve all three interests. The city agreed to convey approximately 20 acres and some other property acquired for utility work to the school district for a new elementary school. Sibley East is giving the city the existing Sibley east school site, softball ďŹ elds, track and gridiron, the Gaylord Hub recently reported. A medical school will lease the Sibley East school site once renovations and asbestos remediation are complete.

School Supplies (continued from page 1)

she had bought her a new backpack for school and that they would donate her old backpack to a family that needed one but perhaps couldn’t afford it. “The questions started coming rapid ďŹ re,â€? Caycie said. The idea that not every child would have a new backpack upset the little girl who’ll enter kindergarten. “Through her tears, she was saying, every kid needs to have a new backpack.â€? Caycie Volek knew her daughter was not about to let the topic go. She knew better than to hope Presley would forget about the discussion. “That wasn’t going to happen,â€? Caycie said.

Community Support

To help families in need, Caycie Volek called several Belle Plaine businesses. She asked if they would be willing to permit the placement of a box in their lobby, a container where people could drop off school supplies for families that can’t readily afford them. The elder Volek found plenty of support. The boxes are donated by Coborn’s. They will be located at Borough Bowl, Johan’s, Annie’s CafĂŠ, River Valley Family Chiropractic, Elsie’s, Hennen’s Furniture, It’s Just Me Salon, State Bank of Belle Plaine, Front Porch Photography, Matt Saxe Chevrolet-Buick, Main Street Donut and the Belle Plaine Herald. Paul Gatz, president and CEO of State Bank of Belle Plaine, didn’t hesitate to welcome the box. As long as people can make a free-will donation without solicitation, he’s all for it. “It’s a great idea,â€? Gatz said. “I think it’s really cool that Presley came up with the idea.â€? She is hoping people will donate backpacks, Kleenex, disinfecting wipes, dry-eraser (whiteboard) markers, glue sticks and bottles of glue, crayons and No. 2 pencils. Volek plans to pick up the items Sept. 1. She’ll take the boxes to the school where school staff can distribute the items. Coborn’s is donating the boxes. Three businesses in Shakopee Volek works at and patronizes – The Pearl Salon, Functional Chiropractic, and River Rick Dental – also agreed to host the drop-of boxes. “We just asked them for space, that was it,â€? Volek said. Volek has learned plenty from her daughter. Volek has heard plenty of positive responses from friends.

She’s received messages back praising her daughter’s kind heart and Caycie’s willingness to work to make the plan a reality. “If you want something bad enough, don’t take no for an answer. Just go do it, she said.

B.P. At, Near State Average, With Better Scores in Math, Reading, Science

Belle Plaine School students performed slightly better on this year’s Minnesota Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) in math, science and reading. The results released last week show B.P. students at or above the state averages in the three areas. The MCA were given last year. The math tests was taken by third- through eighth graders and high school juniors. The science test was taken by ďŹ fth, eighth and 10th-graders. Third- through eighth-graders and high school sophomores took the reading exam. The exams show the state average for proďŹ ciency in math at 60.2 percent. Belle Plaine’s score was 62.2 percent proďŹ ciency. The state reading tests showed 59.5 percent of the students tested across Minnesota achieved proďŹ ciency. In Belle Plaine, 59.4 percent of the students who took the MCA reading test achieved proďŹ ciency. On the MCA science exam, 53.4 percent of the state’s students tested achieved proďŹ ciency. Belle Plaine fared better, with 53.9 percent of its students achieving proďŹ ciency. Belle Plaine School District Superintendent Kelly Smith noted the efforts the district’s staff and students offered toward better test scores. He said the district’s teachers made a concerted effort to have students well-prepared for the MCA exams and provide a better environment for taking the tests. “We saw some slight gains this year, but we still believe we can do better,â€? Smith said. “It’s

By Dr. Kelly Smith

It is hard to believe that August is here already and our Fall Activities eligibility meeting has already taken place. The start of school is right around the corner and our activities will begin with football practice starting on Monday, August 10. Cross Country, Tennis & Volleyball will begin practices on Monday, August 17. If you were unable to attend the Fall eligibility meeting, please contact our Activities & Recreation Director, Chad Eischens, to make sure that all necessary forms and fees are turned in prior to the beginning of your fall activity. Our new teacher workshop will take place on Thursday, August 27th. Our full staff workshop begins on Friday, August 28 and concludes on Wednesday, September 2. We will be holding a joint workshop with Jordan staff at Jordan on the 28th and have national speaker Kevin Honeycutt coming to address the staff. His message deals with “Trends, Tools, and Topics for 21st Century Learning. Mr. Honeycutt is a dynamic speaker who talks about the need to engage our students in the educational process. I am excited to have Mr. Honeycutt with us for this opening session. Statewide test results from the spring MN Comprehensive Assessments (MCAs) were released this past week and we showed slight improvement in Math and Reading. Our overall proficiency percentage in math rose from 61.4% in 2014 to 62.2% in 2015 while our reading scores improved from 56.1% to 59.4%. The state average for math is 60.2% and for reading it is 59.5%. Our science results dropped slightly as we dropped from 54.9% to 53.9% this year. The state average for science proficiency is 53.4%. Although we are at the state average or above in all areas, we are certainly not satisfied with our results and continue to work hard to improve our test results. Staff and students did a great deal of work this past year analyzing the results of previous test performance and modifying instruction practices to help all of our students reach proficiency. We are slowly moving forward with our scores and I know that continued gains are in the future. The Belle Plaine School Board will be holding elections on Tuesday, November 3rd for three open seats on the school board. The seats are currently held by Matt Lenz, Mike Ludvik and Tracy O’Brien. Interested candidates are encouraged to file for the positions beginning this week at the District Center Office located at 130 S Willow Street. Candidate filing period is open from Tuesday, July 28 through Tuesday, August 11. Find out more information about becoming a school board member by checking out our website at the address listed below. As always, if you have any questions about school matters, please feel free to call me at 873-2400 or check our website at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us. You may also find me on Twitter at @BPTiger716. Belle Plaine’s rate of proďŹ ciency on the MCA math exam increased from 61.4 percent in 2014 and 59.4 percent in 2013. On the science exam, Belle Plaine students’ scores dipped by 1 percent compared to results in 2014. They are down by about 2½ percent from 2013. The reading scores showed improvement for Belle Plaine. They climbed by 3.3 percent from 2014 and are over 5 percent better than in 2013.

Free & Reduced

Like the state, Belle Plaine’s ongoing area of concern is the performance of students receiving free-and-reduced price food service. Their scores are well below the average scores of

students who are not receiving discounted food service. The state average for proďŹ ciency on the math tests taken by students who receive freeand-reduced food service is 40.8 percent. Belle Plaine is slightly above that at 44 percent proďŹ ciency. On the science exam, the state average for proďŹ ciency of students receiving free-andreduced food service is 32.9 percent. In Belle Plaine, 34.2 percent of those students were proďŹ cient on the MCA science test. In reading, 40.6 percent of the students receiving reducedprice food service statewide were proďŹ cient. In Belle Plaine, that proďŹ ciency rate is 37.6 percent. Belle Plaine began offering after-school remedial assistance for all students during the second half of the 2014-15 school year. Elementary students more commonly used it than juniorand senior- high-schoolers, Smith said.

Clayton Meyer returned from parts unknown to throw the next 3.1 innings, while Josh Terrio threw the final 2.2 frames. Terrio also led the Tigers offensively, going 2-for-4 with a double. The Tigers did most of their damage in the first inning, getting five singles in a row and plating three runs. But it was not enough as Belle Plaine came out on the wrong end of an 8-4 final score. The Tigers did hold former Tiger Ryan Diers hitless on the day (editor’s note: Diers went 0-for-0 with three walks and a sacrifice fly). Tigers 18, Arlington 0 When this game was scheduled over the winter, it was looked at as a tune-up game before the Region 6C playoffs, as it would not count towards the RVL standings. The Tigers broke out with 17 hits, with one player getting fine-tuned in providing a performance for the ages. Seventh-year player Dylan Nyberg went 4-for-4 with three

home runs and eight RBI, including a sacrifice fly and four runs scored. In the second inning, Nyberg clubbed a two-run shot to left field. In the third he put another one over the vines, driving home three. Nyberg merely singled while driving one run home in the fourth inning – Belle Plaine’s second consecutive six-run frame. In the fifth inning, Nyberg put his name in the Tiger record book by belting his third long ball of the day, a solo shot. Several remembered lefty Adam Johnson clubbing three taters at St. Benedict a few years ago – it was July 9, 2011, to be exact. Consulting with Tiger historians – Tom Melchior, Gerry Meyer and Fred Keup – the only other three home-run game in Tigertown lore was Bob O’Brien at Le Center versus Lonsdale in September 1948. The crowd that day was 2,200. A few weeks later, BP appeared in its first state title game, losing 6-4 to Winsted. Due to the Tiger drubbing and the 10-run rule, the sixth inning

would be Nyberg’s final at-bat – albeit with the bases loaded. With one out, Nyberg hit a fly ball to medium-deep center field; while it was dropped for an error on the fielder, it was deep enough to have scored the run, giving Nyberg a sacrifice fly and an eighth RBI. Ben Wagner started on the hill and worked four scoreless innings, improving his rookieyear record to 3-0. Chase Emmers, Jonny Vinkemeier and Wes Sarsland all contributed a scoreless frame as well. Other hitting stars for Belle Plaine included left fielder Tyler Hartman, who went 3-for-5 with three RBI and a steal. Terrio went 2-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and two runs, while Sarsland likewise went 2-for-3, with two walks, two RBI and a double. 2015 Town Tigers Regular Season Results May 1 vs. Prior Lake L 6-3 May 3 at Chaska L 12-2

Mariena Hayden Selected One of Best Volleyball Players for Her Grade in Country Belle Plaine High School student Mariena Hayden, who will be a junior this fall, was recently named to the Soph 79 team, meaning she is one of the top 79 volleyball players in the nation for her class. She was also put on the watch list for pre-season All-Americans for this season by the same website (www.prepvolleyball.com). The 2014 PrepVolleyball.com Soph 79, Presented By Topical Gear: Mariena Hayden, 6-0 OH, Belle Plaine (Minnesota) – One of the best sophomores in the nation, Hayden missed the first two-thirds of the 2014 high school season with a back injury, but returned to make a tremendous impact on the Tigers over the last third. In 49 sets played, Hayden recorded 314 kills, 145 digs and 36 aces. With her in the lineup, Belle Plaine surged to the state Class AA tournament and placed third. Over three statetournament matches comprising 14 sets, Hayden amassed 93 kills and 50 digs. “Mo (Hayden’s nickname) is

an extremely consistent, powerful attacker from every position on the court, including the service line,” said coach Cassie Koch, herself one of Minnesota’s great high school attackers. “She has the ability to take over matches, even against the highest level of competition. She’s working hard each season to improve her defense and is well on her way to being the complete package as a 6-rotation outside hitter.”

Gray Tigers Baseball

Gray Tigers Split Pair by Mike Zellmann The Belle Plaine Gray Tigers (over 35) baseball team lost to Minnetonka 7-1 on Friday and came back to win against St. Peter 6-5 on Sunday. The Gray Tigers will host Waconia on Wednesday night at 7:30 and Searles Bullheads on Sunday afternoon at 2:00. Minnetonka 7, Tigers 1 The Tigers found out why Minnetonka’s record was 13-2. Shane Hofmann was on the hill against a very solid lineup but would battle his way through six innings. A few unearned runs in the first and the Lakers were out of the gates. The Belle Plaine bats were active but many balls were hit right at Minnetonka. They mustered just five hits. The only run was scored by Randy Stender on a double by Eric Burgemeister. And yes, he did score all the way from first on a double. The that would be the only run of the night for the Grays. Tigers 6, St. Peter 5 St. Peter came to town with a full dugout looking to derail the Tigers, but Belle Plaine pitcher Dave Kreft had other plans. He would battle through a few unearned runs as the Tiger defense struggled in the first few innings, giving up a couple of unearned runs. But on this day the Grays would be a beneficiary of a high popup that could not be

caught by the St. Peter shortstop from Brandt Vinkemeier to score two runs in the third. A RBI single by Shane Hofmann in the fourth would bring the score to 3-1. But some miscues on the field would find the Tigers down at the end of the fifth by the score of 4-3. St. Peter would tack on one more run in the seventh to make it 5-3 going into the final frame of the seventh. With the top of the order up, Burgemeister, Phil Wulf and Kreft coaxed walks out of the St. Peter pitcher to bring up the hot-hitting Vinkemeier. He would hit a towering shot to center that cleared the center fielder’s head and went all the way to the flag poles to score three Tigers for the walkoff win. 2015 Town Tigers Results and Remaining Schedule May 9 at Northfield T 2-2 May 15 at Burnsville L 11-0 June 7 at Rosemount L 10-0 June 9 at Gaylord W 5-2 June 18 vs. Loretto L 11-8 June 24 vs. Le Sueur L 3-1 June 28 vs. Shakopee L 5-3 July 10vs. Jordan Alers W 3-0 July 12 vs. Southwest W 4-1 July 15 at Jor. The Tigers walloped Arlington 18-0 on Sunday in the final game of the regular season and the same two teams will meet again to open postseason play on Friday, with Region 6C action beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the ivy-laden confines of Tiger Park. The season series is tied 1-1 as the A’s nipped Belle Plaine 2-1 in Arlington on July 5. The Tigers’ second playoff game is Sunday at 6 p.m. against either the RVL West’s St. Peter Saints or the RVL Central’s Le Sueur Braves; opponent and location are dependent upon the outcome (see accompanying bracket). The top three teams from the eight-team playoff – consisting entirely of River Valley League teams – will advance to the state tournament. The Jordan Brewers (11-0 RVL) and St. Peter Saints (11-1 RVL) are considered heavy favorites, with the third bid seemingly up for grabs. Three Homers, Eight RBI in One Game Belle Plaine’s Dylan Nyberg is pictured hitting his third home run of the day Sunday against Arlington. He finished 4-for-4 with eight RBI. Schultz in the seventh inning – much to the relief of most honest fans in the ballpark, as it meant an earlier end to a foregone conclusion. The Tigers sent five different pitchers to the hill on this lifeless evening, showing incremental improvement as they went. An Annual Tradition The 15th annual Scott County Sheriff’s Office Youth Catfish Derby took place Monday on the Minnesota River. Some 50 youth, accompanied by about 20 boat captains, caught over 350 fish. Numerous prizes were awarded during a participant raffle. Also, each kid received a life jacket and fishing pole. Among this year’s participants (below) are Joey Gorman and Zach Olson of Belle Plaine holding a couple of small channel catfish. The purpose of the Scott County Sheriff’s Office Youth Catfish Derby, headquartered at the Scott County Fairgrounds, is to give kids a chance to get to know public safety personnel as people. In addition, the derby gives young people the occasion to experience a hobby they can continue for a lifetime. Statistics show that youth turn to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs partially because of boredom. Hopefully, for some, fishing will provide another option.

Samantha, Stephanie and Sabrina Winter have been racing go-karts for a few years.

The Winter Girls Know Their Way Around a Dirt Oval Henderson residents Stephanie, Samantha and Sabrina Winter glibly point at their father when asked how they got started in racing. Truth is, they enjoy racing almost as much as their mom and dad enjoy watching them drive. Stephanie, 19, and Samantha, 17, run in the stock go-kart class Saturday nights at Arlington Raceway. Their little sister, Sabrina, 15, runs in the junior sportsmen go-kart class at the track. “He’s the fire that fueled it,” Stephanie Winter said. Chuck Winter has raced at the track in the stock car class for several years. He started when he was 15. He’s put his racing schedule on hold the past few years to focus on his daughters “My car’s in the trailer,” Chuck Winters said. “I get more of a rush watching the kids.” Stephanie and Samantha started racing three seasons ago. Sabrina has started racing two years ago. Samantha races as often as she can. Stephanie juggles her work and social calendars around the Saturday night races. The most recently published points standings have Samantha tied for third in stock go-kart, 138 points behind leader Holli Reimers of Belle Plaine. Stepha-

nie is well back in 12th place. “I definitely wish I had more time,” Stephanie said. She loves motor sports and enjoys truck and tractor pulls when she’s not driving. “If it doesn’t have a motor in it, it’s not worth my time.” Sabrina Winter is in fourth place in the junior go-karts standings. She’s 76 points out of first place.

Competition

All three love the competition. They compete in school activities and on the small oval in the infield at Arlington Raceway. Samantha is not interested in the subtleties of driving. “You go fast and turn left,” she said. One of the lessons attributes Sabrina has picked up from her older sisters is the competitive fire. She takes great pleasure in beating Stephanie in video games. “I don’t like losing,” the elder daughter said. “If I’m losing, I walk away.” While they learned from their father, the two older girls have taught their younger sister some of the lessons they have learned – to lean back in the seat and smoothly drive through corners without jerking the steering wheel to the left. The girls know that driving is

more than just climbing into a car and navigating their way through corners. At the shop in rural Belle Plaine where their go-karts are stored, they work on the cars alongside their father, mother and uncle. The karts are light enough that they can move them. The components are light enough the girls can offer meaningful assistance. “It’s something that keeps you together,” Chuck Winter said. “With the kids, you have to cherish what you have.” “There’s an old saying that’s very true. The family that races together, stays together,” said Dawn Winter, the girls’ mother and adult influence of the group. Chuck Winter perhaps sees a bit of himself in his children’s’ love of racing. He learned the sport from his father, Dick Schroeder. Chuck and his younger brother, Chad, grew up racing together. They all enjoy racing informally on land Chad rents. When it comes to the serious racing Saturday nights, Chuck and Dawn still gets butterflies when their daughters take to the track. “You talk to the old-timers and they’ll tell you, if you ever lose that feeling, it’s time to get out,” Chuck said.
