BPHS Hosting Holiday Choir Concert Monday Belle Plaine Junior-Senior High School’s choirs will perform a holiday concert Monday night (Dec. 15, 7 p.m.) in the south gymnasium. The concert is focused on a “true gift,” said Cheryl Gorton, the school’s choir teacher. “It’s about one hope being the gift of Christmas memories and what do you really remember about Christmases from the past, the unwrapped gift or the memories of family and fellowship. What do we hold dear?”

About 300 students will perform. A special treat this year will be the addition of an alumni choir at the end of the concert. BPHS grads are invited to participate. Another popular feature of the holiday concert is the finale, “Silent Night.” “We invite any students home for the holidays from college or wherever to come and sing with us. We will have a reserved area of seating and hope to have around 20 or more,” Gorton said.

Evelyn E. Ische, 89, of Waconia passed away Sunday November 30, 2014 at the Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia. Funeral Service will be Friday, December 5 at 1 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia with Rev. Bob Alsleben officiating. Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Interment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Benton Township, rural Cologne. Evelyn was born May 18, 1925 in Cologne, the daughter of Ferdinand and Anna (Finkel) Born. Evelyn was baptized June 7, 1925 at the Evangelical Church in Waconia and later confirmed on April 10, 1938 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carver with Rev. V. Ostermann. Evelyn was raised in Carver County and lived there her entire life. She lost her Dad when she was 2 years old due to a tragic blasting accident. The Dad she knew by age 12 was Gottfried Kroells, who was a kind and good hearted father to her and 3 siblings. On October 28, 1944 Evelyn was united in marriage to Marvin Ische at Zion Lutheran Church in Benton Twp. Cologne by Rev. Rottmann. They went on to raise 12 children on a small farm in rural Norwood. She showed love and affection to all her children and to the end, was involved with their lives and the lives of 20 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Birthday, anniversary and holiday cards had to be sent to all her family members and a call on their birthday was a must. Evelyn never had a driver’s license, as she was busy cooking, cleaning, baking bread and raising kids and caring for grandchildren, and fussing over the great-grandchildren. She was a kind and gentle person that honestly cared about all members of her family and friends their entire life. Evelyn would be there, to offer her opinion and guidance, that was most likely the best path in life. Taxpayers Pass on School District Tax, Budget Hearing levy. To the owner of a house valued for taxation at $150,000, the proposed increase will add about $35.43 to the school district’s share of the overall 2015 property tax bill. The school board’s final consideration of the levy is set for Monday’s meeting (Dec. 15, 6 p.m.) in the Belle Plaine District Center. The increase in the school district’s operating levy -- $221,090.04 – is primarily aimed at post-employment benefits (OPEB) for long-term employees after retirement and health and safety projects. A local decision, the OPEB accounts for $150,000 of the increase. The school board also set aside $64,616.22 toward projects, like asbestos abatement or a fire sprinkler system improvement. The amount of the of money set aside is based on a state formula. The school board decides how to spend the money.

Andy’s Gift of Life

The overall levy is based on a series of local decisions and state formulas. The district is increasing its general fund (which funds overall operations) by 22.49 percent, or $285,150.01. The property tax levy is a small portion of the district’s overall operating budget. Most of the district’s total 2014 budget – about $21.3 million – comes in the form of state aid. The levy for Community Education is only going up by $179.40 (.16%). The district’s debt service fund (which pays for bonded debt) is being cut by $64,239.37 (2.01%). The increase in the levy is increasing the district’s share of property taxes in part because of the increase in property valuations. After years of decreasing valuations, the overall value of property in the Belle Plaine School District increased by 3.22 percent to approximately $889.84 million.

the second year of growth after four years of decline. New Prague water utility users will see no increase in the base rate, only a $5 per month fee to reduce the amount of bonding for maintenance to the system. Electric customers will see no increase in the base rate for six of the seven rate classes for residential through industrial customers.

BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA

Thirty Years Ago This Week

Cable TV Anyone? Joanne and Jim Brenke (left) of Belle Plaine conferred with a marketing representative for DOW-SAT Minnesota while trying to decide if they would sign up for cable TV. The cable company held an open house on Dec. 7 and 8 of 1984 at the Belle Plaine Vets Club. About 100 Belle Plaine residents were hooked up and receiving cable TV service as of Dec. 11. “Some are so slick at it, that you can stand right beside them and they get away with it.” That was how Bill Steffen, owner of Steffen’s Our Own Hardware in downtown Belle Plaine, described activities of shoplifters in his store. Steffen and nearly every other store owner contacted locally agreed that shoplifting was a problem for them in Belle Plaine. All the merchants said that when someone was caught shoplifting, most often is was a local person. Police Chief Joe Lenz told merchants that stores statewide lose $500,000 to shoplifters every day. Mary Tilleson told the Belle Plaine Community Services Commission that she would have stayed on as community services director had the commission raised her salary to $20,000. The commission had recently raised her salary from $15,600 to $18,000 after a little over one year of employment. After accepting Tilleson’s resignation, the commission agreed to hire Mary Ann Stier of Belle Plaine, a Mankato State College recreation student, to run the community services program for $160 a week until a new director is hired. About 100 Belle Plaine residents were hooked up and receiving cable TV service as of Dec. 11, officials of DOWSAT of Minnesota reported that week. Six installation trucks were installing between 40 and 50 hookups a day, and by Christmas 400 homes were expected to be installed. The Santa House, located at the intersection of Main and Meridian streets downtown, would open for the holidays on Dec. 14. Belle Plaine postal officials reported that the volume of Christmas mail was higher than the year before because people seemed to be mailing packages earlier. Postmaster Linda Ernst said the local post office sent

out more than 100 packages that Monday alone. The Belle Plaine City Council granted a request by Harold Edberg to rezone a 20-acre tract at the west end of Main and Church streets from A-1 (agricultural zoning) to R-2 (multiple-family dwelling zoning). A preliminary plan submitted by Edberg called for the construction of three-unit walkout condominiums and single-family dwellings on the 20-acre tract. Brian Gene Gruetzmacher, 20, of Belle Plaine, passed away on Dec. 7 at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague. He was born on May 1, 1964 and grew up in Belle Plaine the son of Ewald and Adella Gruetzmacher. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1982. He was engaged in farming with his family in Belle Plaine Township. He was a member of FFA and a lifelong member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. Mary Jane Gunderson, 49, of Northbrook, Ill., passed away of a heart attack on Dec. 3 at a Northbrook hospital. She was born on May 22, 1935 at Green Isle to Leo and Fern (Tierney) Bowser. She married J. Brooks Gunderson of Centerville, S.D., in August of 1957. Six Belle Plaine High School FFA members attended the National FFA Convention in Kansas City that fall. They were Steve Smith, Brad Latzke, Mike Fahrenkamp, Glenn Renne, John Winterfeldt and Brad Johnson. The BPHS boys’ basketball team split two games, beating Faribault Shattuck 47-42 and losing to Montgomery 46-28. Rich Halquist had 14 points in the win over Shattuck. Brad Johnson had 10 points against Monty. The Tiger girls’ basketball team won a pair of games, defeating Arlington-Green Isle 39-25 and Le Sueur 43-32. Laurie Wolpern combined for 43 points in the two games.

60 Years Ago (1954)

The Belle Plaine Commercial Club sponsored a Santa Claus Day at the high school. As the children filed out of the auditorium, each was given a generous-sized package of goodies. Mrs. Henry Kloempken was back at her home in Washington Lake Township after 75 days at the New Prague hospital for treatment for injuries suffered when hit by an automobile at a street intersection in Belle Plaine. It had been a week of unusual weather – some rain, light snow flurries and temperatures above the freezing mark. William Frederick Schultz, native of San Francisco Township, died at the age of 74. He was the father of Walter and Vernon Schultz. The Nativity Scene, project of Leo Albrecht, was set up on South Meridian Street, on the Leo Albrecht vacant lots across the side street from the Alvin Stier home. According to unofficial report, the Minnesota Community Telephone Co. planned to install dial service in its Belle Plaine and Jordan exchanges in 1956. Miss Joyce Mae Hessing, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roland Hessing, became the bride of A/2c Roger Frederick Trost, son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Trost of Blakeley. F.L. Kuehl, lifelong resident of Young America, was collecting his mail in the village post office when stricken with a heart attack and was dead in minutes. To appease the good wife before he went north for hunting, Bill Zellmann of Norwood promised her a bearskin rug complete with head and paws. Bill made good on the promise as he shot and brought back a 240-pound bear killed near Floodwood. Harold E. Bigot, 38, a former

March 7th, 2015

120 Years Ago (1894)

Unusually beautiful weather prevailed for December. The only interruption was an allday rain. The railroad company put up a water tank and engine house at its Belle Plaine station. Mary Montag, who came back from Sprague, Wash., on account of the illness of her father, said that when she left Sprague only 18 cents was being offered for wheat in that market. The post office department changed the name of the post office at Hamilton to Glendale because the old name conflicted with Hamline. The railroad company retained the name Hamilton for its station. Both the post office and station would eventually be named Savage.

MVEC Grant is Music to Cologne Academy’s Ears Cologne Academy has received a $1,000 grant award from Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative (MVEC)’s Operation Round-Up. The money will go toward the purchase of additional guitars to enhance the school’s guitar studio music program. Cologne Academy offers guitar instruction to kindergarten through eighth-grade students during their respective music classes. The lessons benefit students through increased responsibility, commitment, improved memory retention, sense of pride and accomplishment, and higher IQs. With a previous generous grant award by MVEC, Cologne Academy implemented the guitar studio and offered beginning guitar to comple-

ment the school’s growing music program. With this grant, Cologne Academy will be able to further its goal of full student participation. “Cologne Academy has a phenomenal music department and this grant will allow it to continue to flourish. We are fortunate to have very skilled and passionate teachers leading the students in their learning each day,” said Lynn Peterson, the charter school’s executive director. Operation Round Up (ORU) allows customers to round up their monthly electric bills to fund community grants. Operation Round Up has donated over $1 million dollars to local non-profit organizations since ORU’s inception in 1995.

Mom and Dad, Brandon and Gina, are feeling blessed. Little Emma “has lots and lots of curly dark hair, just like her Mom,” chided a cheerful Grandma Sharon, “and I have lots and lots of wonderful grandchildren” Sharon and Doc O’Connell were among a number of St. Thomas folks who enjoyed The Holiday Lights Parade in Le Sueur, the mild weather and the hospitality of Wise Furniture and The Bar and Grill Friday evening. Mary Jean Halloran, her brother Tom Glisczinski and sister Judy celebrated the 90th birthday of their uncle John Donlan, on Saturday, at his Senior Living home in West St. Paul. He was married to their mom’s sister, Rita Brown, who passed away at age 41. Blessed with four children, Sharon, Michael, Kevin and Tim, all made it to the celebration, including grandchildren living locally and as far away as California and Idaho. Mary Jean’s mom, Virginia Brown Glisczinski, and Rita are descendants of Joe and Lil Brown. Sister Beth, living in Oakland, California was missed, but sent her regards. Lexi went to exercise class with Alice and volunteered a shift at the library in Le Sueur. They did some holiday baking together and Luke helped her make some stain glass stars. “It was great fun having a shadow!” The Retkas also visited Jan Retka Lexi’s grandmother, at traditions in Montgomery. Kevin, Cari, Madelyn Landwer and Loni Graham enjoyed The Rhapsody Christmas Piano and Guitar Recital at the Eagles Club in Mankato Sunday evening, December 8. Katelyn Landwer was among 42 participants spreading Christmas cheer. Following the recital, they took in the third annual Kiwanis Holiday Lights at Sibley Park, where the light show of one million lights were on display, just for a donation to their local food shelves. State to Release Sex Offender in Le Center A 50-year-old man recently won an appeal for his release from the Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP) where he has lived since 1992. Robert W. Jeno is the third person released from the program. He plans to live in a halfway house in Le Center. A community notification meeting is slated for Dec. 16 at Tri-City United Middle School in Le Center, the Star-Tribune recentely reported. Jeno will be living under close scrutiny. Conditions of his release include wearing a global

positioning system monitor around the clock and submission to random searches of his residence. He must also continue outpatient sex offender treatment. Jeno was originally convicted for sexually assaulting two women while he was a teenager. One of the assaults took place at a house party. The other occurred while Jeno was on probation for a previous offense. He also assaulted his sister’s boyfriend with a knife, according to court documents.

BPPD Continues to Accept Toys for Tots Donations The Belle Plaine Police Department is accepting donations of toys for the Marine Toys for Tots program until Dec. 19. All donated toys will be picked up that day for distribution to local children who are less fortunate than others. Any cash donations can be done online through toysfortots. org. This is the first year that Belle Plaine police along with the local Girl Scouts troop have participated in the toy drive. All toys should remain unwrapped for donation. Gifts are

accepted for children up to 16 years old. Realistic looking toy weapons and gifts with food will not be distributed. While purchasing items for smaller children is a pretty simple task, donors often wonder what to get teens. The Toys for Tots website recommends sporting equipment, board games, books, hand-held electronics and similar items. The drop off locations are at Belle Plaine City Hall, Belle Plaine Police Department and Coborn’s Grocery Store.

Forre! Chaska May Trade School Days for 2016 Ryder Cup The Chaska-based Eastern Carver County School District is considering a 2016-17 school calendar that includes days off for the 2016 Ryder Cup international golf competition. The district is proposing 2015-16 and 2016-17 school calendars that start before Labor Day, starting dates that already received state approval. The 2016-17 school calendar includes no school Sept. 26-30 while the Ryder Cup is played at Hazeltine National Golf Club near Chaska High School. The days off could allow the golf tournament to use school facilities’ parking lots, the Chaska Herald recently report-

ed. About 300,000 people and 4,000 volunteers are expected to attend the golf competitions between professional golfers representing the United States and Europe. The 2015-16 school calendar will start before Labor Day to give the district time for classroom preparation. The proposed 2015-16 school calendar runs from Aug. 31-June 2. The proposed 2016-17 calendar covers Aug. 30-June 7. The early publication of the two proposed calendars is to give families time to schedule vacation days, according to an ECC school district spokesperson.

BPHS Grad Part of State-Wide Program

As we head into the holiday break, many concerts are on the agenda at our schools. Last night, our 7-12 band students presented their Winter Concert with a great mix of music from holiday classics to full band marches. Thanks for the great concert, students! On Monday, 12/15, our high school program will present their annual Holiday concert in the South Gym. December 18th is the 5th & 6th grade concert at Oak Crest beginning at 7 p.m. Thanks to all of our participating music students for sharing their talents with all of us! The 2015 Minnesota Legislative Session begins at noon on Tuesday, January 6 and is scheduled to run until Saturday, May 17. This is a long session with two year budget appropriations for public schools and state programs on the docket as well as the usual work of the legislative session. Legislators return to the Capitol with the good news that the State of Minnesota is projected to have a $1.04 billion surplus for the upcoming biennium. Revenue officials and Governor Dayton made the announcement last week that the Minnesota economy continues to grow and that combining new revenue with declining costs for state government health care will result in a significant surplus. In addition to the revenue projections of $1 billion surplus, the state now has a rainy day fund that has grown to just under $1 billion as well. So what priorities will our legislators work for during this session? That depends upon whom you ask. Governor Dayton has public said that he will be seeking an expanded child care credit, he has made previous commitments to raise education funding each year and he has indicated that transportation is in need of additional resources. Recently legislators have advocated for additional funding for early childhood education, an additional 5% funding increase for Home and Community Based Services (this will serve people with disabilities and older Minnesotans requiring personal care or nursing home assistance) and the possibility of tax cuts has been mentioned frequently as well. Just a quick reminder that our regular December board meeting has been moved from December 22nd to the 15th with our regular meeting beginning at 5:30 p.m. Agenda items include a report from our legislators – Sen. Kevin Dahle and Representative-Elect Bob Vogel, approval of our annual audit, approval of our 2015 levy and final approval of Policy 540 – Student Clubs. Applications to fill the board seat opened by the resignation of Board Chair Matt Bigaouette are due to the District Office by 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 15th. Interested candidates may pick up the application forms at our office or they may be found on the school district website home page. It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. Sibley East Awaiting Judge’s Ruling on Referendum Lawsuit

Students at Green Isle Community School will present a holiday program Thursday, Dec. 18, 7 p.m., at the school. Written by Bridget Stewart, a parent of a GICS student, “The Program that Never Was” is about a program that keeps getting canceled due to a series of unexpected events. Every student in the third through sixth grades has a speaking roll with most of the roles being equal in size so there aren’t any lead roles.

After last Tuesday’s (Dec. 2) hearing on the Sibley East School District’s bond referendum, District Court Judge Kevin Eide said he’d take some time before issuing a ruling. Voters OK’d the district’s referendum Nov. 4. The court hearing came after a rural Gaylord farmer, Nathan Kranz, filed a lawsuit claiming the district did not meet deadlines for publishing information and other procedural steps to hold the referendum Nov. 4. Kranz, who also owns land in Jessenland Township, is seeking a ruling the referendum be invalidated. After legal counsel for both

sides submitted written briefs supporting their respective positions, opponents and proponents of the $43.05 million referendum are awaiting Eide’s ruling promised sometime after yesterday (Dec. 9). The Dec. 2 hearing included testimony from school district and county staff on the timing of publishing of documents before the referendum. Superintendent Jim Amsden noted his concern about his inexperience with elections during his first two years as a superintendent. He said Sibley County auditor’s staff assured him they would assist with the proce-

dural steps, the Gaylord Hub recently reported. Kranz’s attorney Erick Kaardal claims the district was “fatally late” publishing documents. The late publishing, he argued, necessitates a ruling the referendum is invalid. Kaardal contends the cost for a special election to replace the Nov. 4 election, an amount expected to be about $14,000, is selfinflicted. The $43.05 million bond referendum, was intended to pay for a new elementary in Gaylord and renovation and expansion of the district’s facility in Arlington.

Chaska City Council Pulls the Plug on Municipal Wi-Fi Chaska residents who subscribe to the city’s wireless Internet service – chaska.net – may want to start their search for a replacement provider soon now that the city council has decided to nix the service. The system needs about $3 million in equipment upgrades next summer. With council members unwilling to spend the money to keep the system up to speed and plenty of private-sector options available to consumers, the city decided it was time for its Wi-Fi to go bye-bye. The formal decision on the service’s finale is slated for Dec. 15 when the city council OKs Chaska’s 2015 budget. Early next year, Chaska.net’s existing 1,100 customers will receive a notice the city plans to pull the plug on the service in

six months, the Chaska Herald recently reported. City staff is proposing the city not charge subscribers for the service during its last four months, said Matt Podhradsky, the city’s administrator. The city sought proposals from potential private sector vendors. One included in its proposal an offer of $5,000 for the equipment the city originally paid $2 million for over the past decade. The two offers the city received were perceived as an effort to gain access to city water towers, Podhradsky said. Chaska is working with Google to help users migrate their e-mail to other providers. It will continue to provide the Chaska-based Eastern Carver County School District fiberoptic service.

Girls’ Basketball (continued from page 13) Carlson said. “We have some tough people on this team this year and they will battle with you. BA is a very good, young, well-coached team. We made some big plays to win this thing.” Carlson was referring to Johnson hitting a big shot off a rebound to put the Tigers ahead for good late in the game, while Hayden and Narveson also hit some big shots to get Belle Plaine back in the game. He added that Alissa Schultz had an outstanding overall game and came up with a big rebound at the end. Carlson described Hayden’s performance (23 points and 19 rebounds) as “unbelievable.” “She just took it over inside for us. Overall, it was a big win and a fun night. We need to keep improving though.” Also scoring for Belle Plaine were Johnson (9), Narveson (8), Schmitz (7), Schultz (6), Weiers (4) and Kellogg (2). Johnson had eight assists and two steals. Weiers had eight rebounds, followed by Schultz and Kellogg with seven apiece.

Second Place

The Trinity Lutheran School girls’ basketball team brought home the second-place trophy on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the St. Croix Lutheran Tip-off Tournament. The Tigers defeated Rochester 35-10 and Menomonie, Wis., 37-12. Trinity lost a close game in the championship to Burnsville 44-37. Trinity was the smallest school in the tournament, but proved it has a lot of talent. Pictured in the front row, from left, are Morgan Glowicki, Erin West, Naomi Anderson and Daisy Vinkemeier. H.S. Boys’ Basketball

Tigers Fall to 0-3 by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School boys’ basketball team has not had a good start to the season. Not only has it dropped its first three games, but it is without perhaps its best player, junior Luke Narveson, for possibly six weeks. Narveson broke his thumb in a loss at Waterville on Dec. 1. Belle Plaine’s latest setback occurred at Glencoe-Silver Lake Thursday night as the Panthers defeated the Tigers 60-45. It was Belle Plaine’s third double-digit loss in as many outings. The Tigers were scheduled to host Le Sueur-Henderson in the Minnesota River Conference opener Tuesday night after this edition of the Herald went to press. Belle Plaine will also be at home 7:30 p.m. this Friday against Watertown-Mayer and 5:30 p.m. Saturday against Waseca. The Tigers will be at Blue Earth Area next Tuesday. Glencoe-SL 60, Tigers 45 For the third time in as many games, Belle Plaine tallied 47 or fewer points in a 60-45 loss Thursday night in Glencoe. Mitchel Stier was the only Tiger in double figures with 16 points. Following Stier in scoring for the Tigers were Kincade

Our defense is improving but we are giving up too many offensive rebounds. We need to do better at finishing possessions. “Offensively, we are still a work in progress, but our efficiency is improving. Mitchel Stier played a tremendous second half and he did a great job on their leading scorer, holding him to eight points in the game. Our goal is to improve everyday and we are doing that.”

and take down to score a 12-3 major decision over Logan Wadsworth at 138. Following the two majors, one by each team, Hutchinson elected to forfeit to David Flynn at 145 and that brought to the mat Scott West freshman Tyler Buesgens at 152, who was all over his Hutchinson opponent in scoring a 17-1 technical fall at the end of just the second period. After Dylan Johnson dropped an 8-4 match to Ethan Link, Scott West sophomore Deshawn Carter came to the mat to deliver his biggest win to date as a Scott West Panther as he bettered Josh Filk 6-3 at 170. Carter’s win put the meet a way for Scott West as that put the team score at 33-7. Panther Andrew Fogarty went out and widened the gap to 39-7 with a second-period pin of Tyler Stenze at 182. Hutchinson closed the meet by winning the last three matches as senior Gregor Frazer won a 22-9 major decision over eighth-grader Calvin Menke at 195, Chandler Kurth scored a pin of Tyler Grieves at 220 and state place-winner Jake Filk brought the meet to a conclusion with a pin of Jacob Allen at heavyweight. “Hutchinson has some good upper weights,” states Ripley. “However, we are going to have to find a way to wrestle better up top if we want to truly be a successful team.” Scott West continued its early-season success as it won the team championship of the Lakeville North Invitational behind the strength of six finalists that included four individual champions. The Panthers’ performance was good enough for 177.5 team points, which bettered the 14-team field that included Eagan’s team runner-up 149 points. “Overall, we wrestled a pretty good tournament,” states Ripley. “However, while it was good to win the tournament and that was certainly our goal, I think it’s probably the lowest point total that we have ever won a regular invitational tournament with, so that should tell us that we still need to get better at a lot of weight classes.” The first four weight classes for the Panthers did just fine as all four advanced to the finals. Leading the way was 106 -pound eighth-grader Tyler Shackle as he became the sixth Panther this year to pin his way

to an invitational championship. He used a bar arm to drive Hudson’s Drew Clabon to his back for a pin fall call at 1:26. The next Scott West finalist, Ben Kelvington, had a very tough match in his championship final at 126 as he squared off against Lakeville North’s returning state champion Wade Sullivan, who won the Class 3A title last year at 113. Trailing 1-0 in the third period, Kelvington was the recipient of a penalty point to tie the match as Sullivan was whistled for a full nelson. With the match now tied at one apiece, Kelvington would slip Sullivan’s ride for what would become a matchwinning reversal as Sullivan could only muster a late escape in the 3-2 Kelvington win. “Ben wrestled a really solid match in this one and points were hard to come by,” comments Ripley. “Anytime you beat a returning state champion, that’s certainly something you can build off of.” Senior David Flynn became a four-time Lakeville North Invitational champion as he scored a convincing 9-1 major decision over a longtime foe in Woodbury’s #5 Ty Johnson in the championship finals at 138. Flynn used a series of good leg attacks to score four take downs in the championship win. Flynn’s senior teammate Andrew Fogarty won his third Lakeville North Invitational as he dominated Lakeville South’s Dalton Peterson at 170 by scoring a 15-0 technical fall with a match-ending take down right at the start of the third period. “Andrew (a returning state champion) has been making it look pretty easy so far this year,” suggests Ripley. “However, he knows that there are some potential big matches coming up and the first could come as soon as this Friday against Shakopee’s returning state champion Owen Webster as a possibility.” What was the possibility that Scott West would get a pair of finalists out of two wrestlers who would replace the designated Panther starters at 113 and 120? The answer is pretty good as Parker Huss at 113 and Brenden Mackedanz at 120 stepped in for Jackson Stauffacher and Carter Piche, who were withheld from the competition. Huss scored a “Panther Payback” right out of the shoot

Scott West Wins Three Duals, Captures Lakeville Invite After a Thursday night quad in Jordan that included a rematch of the 2014 Section 2AA team championship final between Scott West and the Hutchinson Tigers, the Scott West wrestling team finished off its busy week by traveling to the Lakeville North Invitational and winning the team championship on Saturday. “It was a good week of wrestling for us,” states Scott West coach Darren Ripley. “We will have to continue to see improvement as we have some big events coming up on the schedule, including a dual meet with Shakopee, the Minnesota Christmas Tournament and the Rumble on the Red.” After downing Mankato East 68-6 and New Ulm 78-0 in Jordan Thursday, Scott West rum-

bled with section rival Hutchinson and the Panthers wrestled to a 39-23 win over the Tigers. The Panthers were led by eighthgrader Tyler Shackle, who went right to work by building an 8-0 first-period lead over Tate Card with a take down and a couple of three-point near falls. Shackle carried the momentum throughout the match as he took a 13-0 lead into the third period before recording a pin fall call at 4:33. After Jackson Stauffacher held on to win a close 5-4 decision over Hutchinson’s Brock Luthens at 113, it was a battle of the Mackedanzs at 120 as Brendan Mackedanz was a late replacement in the Scott West lineup for Carter Piche because of illness. With the Hutchinson Mackedanz leading 2-1 going

into the third period, the Panther Mackedanz would drive through a leg attack to score a 3-2 match-winning take down late in the third period for his biggest win as a Scott West Panther. Junior Ben Kelvington continued his improvement as he scored a solid 9-3 win over Dylan Pundsack. That made it four wins in a row for Scott West and gave the Panthers a 15-0 lead. Hutchinson got on the scoreboard for the first time behind its returning state place-winner Riley Drew at 132 as he scored a 20-9 major decision over Tony Dvorak. However, Ryan Siegle would respond for the Panthers with a late third-period escape

the routine, we had a few minor errors that faltered our confidence.” “The competition was tough with 12 other teams competing,” Dikmen continued. “At awards, we were grateful to take home the fifth-place trophy, beating out section competitors Orono, Waconia and Delano. We look forward to an exciting and challenging competitive season, which is off to a great start.” Belle Plaine did not take part in the varsity jazz category, which was also won by Mound Westonka. Only seven other teams competed. Junior Varsity Belle Plaine’s junior varsity kick team opened Saturday’s competition with “Sweet

Dreams.” “Despite having a young team, the girls didn’t let their nerves or inexperience get the best of them,” Dikmen said. “Their enthusiasm gave them the stamina to finish strong and leave Hutchinson with the third-place trophy, beating four other teams.” 2014-15 BPHS Dance Team Remaining Competitive Schedule Dec. 13 at Waconia Invite Dec. 18 MRC at Jordan Dec. 20 at Edina Invite Jan. 10 at Lakeville S. Tigers Pick Up First Win

by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School girls’ basketball team experience both defeat and victory in its first week of the regular season. The Tigers lost by 23 points at Waterville-ElysianMorristown last Tuesday before rallying to edge Faribault Bethlehem Academy by a point Thursday night in Belle Plaine. The Tigers will have had a full week to enjoy their first triumph of the season when they host Glencoe-Silver Lake 7:30 p.m. this Thursday at the BPHS gym. The Tigers will have two more nonconference games at Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton (Friday) and at Fairmont (next Tuesday) before opening Minnesota River Conference play at home against Sibley East next Thursday night. WEM 67, Tigers 44 Mariena Hayden scored 23 points and grabbed 16 rebounds but it wasn’t enough as the Tigers lost to the Bucs 67-44. “For the first game of the year, we did a lot of really good things,” said Tigers coach Randy Carlson. “We handled the ball well against their pressure and ran our offense okay. We got good shots, we just did not make enough. Defensively, we did well against a very good veteran team. “There were a couple of things where the game got away from us for a little bit. But give the kids credits, we competed right to the end and showed how much more competitive we are,” Carlson continued. The coach praised Hayden’s strong play inside and guard Elizabeth Johnson’s overall The BPHS dance team performed during halftime of Thursday night’s girls’ basketball game game getting the Tigers into in Belle Plaine. Holiday Express

Hundreds of people attended Belle Plaine’s annual Holiday Express at the high school Saturday morning. The event once again featured an assortment of events, including a shopping store (situated in the library), where small kids had the opportunity to shop for their parents and other family members. All items ranged from $1 to $5. Among those shoppers was Ty Pasek, who was escorted by Courtney Fogarty, one of a number of BPHS volunteers who helped the young shoppers while their parents waited outside the store. Ty wasn’t quite tall enough to see what all the items were on top of the table, so he eventually got a boost from Fogarty.

Ice Work Belle Plaine Hockey Association members Johnny Egan (right) and Jerry Kornder were out watering down the ice hockey rink along Market Avenue Friday evening. Along with city public works staff, the two men (and several other association members) have been volunteering most any time temperatures drop below freezing to improve the quality of the ice for informal pick-up ice hockey games and the association’s pond hockey tournament Jan. 2-3.
