Squirrel KOs Power, Leaves Belle Plaine, Area in the Dark A squirrel investigating a transformer in an Xcel Energy substation somehow shorted out the 69-kilovolt facility, leaving Belle Plaine and the surrounding area in the dark for part of the morning and earlyafternoon. Police and firefighters received a report of an explosion at the substation at the north end of Market Street in Belle Plaine just before 10 a.m. Saturday. Over 3,200 customers

served by the substation were immediately cast into the dark, according to an Xcel Energy spokesperson. Xcel Energy crews went to work to reroute power. Electricity to Xcel customers north of the Minnesota River was back on before noon. Customers south of the river were in the dark until around 2 p.m. The outage impacted participants at the Holiday Express at Belle Plaine Junior-Senior

High School. The school’s south gymnasium, media center and common area were being used for the events. Thanks to mild weather, doors were open allowing light to enter the gymnasium. Sunlight also entered the window-lined media center and common area. Firefighters came up to the school. They provided light for the gymnasium using generators on fire trucks.

by Dan Ruud In its second to final regular meeting of 2016, the Belle Plaine City Council Monday night tabled adding a proposed Meridian Street Trail to the 2017 street and utility improvement project. The trail would extend along the west side of Meridian Street from the new Enterprise Drive overpass southward to Century Street (approximately 2,600 feet) at an estimated cost of $80,000, which could be added as an alternate bid to the city’s 2017 street and utility improvement. City Administrator Mike Votca reported that there could be an added cost to the trail in that one lot of right-of-way may have to be acquired, for which no cost estimate has been provided. Because of that, Council Member Paul Chard suggested that the present council should leave that decision to the council that will be in place in January, which will include a new mayor and two new council members. Chard and Cary Coop will be the only two existing members still on the council at that time. However, Coop, who is in favor of the trail, requested that

the issue be placed back on the agenda at the next council meeting rather than after the first of the year. Council Member Henry Pressley Jr., who was serving as acting mayor in the absence of Mayor Mike Pingalore, cast the only no vote to table the trail issue. The bulk of the $1.2 millionplus 2017 street and utility improvement project will consist of the reconstruction and utility replacement of West Main Street between Buffalo and Crest streets, and Elk Street between West Main and State streets. About one-third of the cost for those improvements will be paid for by benefitting property owners and the rest by the city. In other business Monday night, the council unanimously authorized the execution of a memorandum of understanding with the Scott County Community Development Agency regarding 2017 economic development incentive (EDI) grants. Belle Plaine Community Development Director Cynthia Smith-Strack reported that the total grant award will be $65,300. “The Scott County Community Development Agency (CDA) is pleased to inform you that your EDI grant requests have been awarded to the city of Belle Plaine,” stated a Scott County CDA letter. The funds will be used for: 1. Extension of the north

sanitary interceptor sewer in the amount of $42,200, which requires a 1/2 minimum local match. The purpose of the project is to help induce development of approximately 1,000 acres within the city’s urban growth boundary. The scope of the project is limited to the portion of the interceptor sewer extension from 1st Street NE (current terminus) to the east side of Highway 169. 2. Preparation of street and utility construction documents for the proposed Buesgens Commercial Center in the amount of $23,100, which will also require a 1/2 minimum local match. The purpose of the project is to extend Enterprise Drive east of Hickory Boulevard, which is currently platted Buesgens Commercial Center. The site is located near the Coborn’s commercial complex. The intent of the project is to lure developers seeking shovelready parcels. Projects supported by Scott County CDA grants must be completed by Dec. 31, 2017. *Following a public hearing at which no one in the audience spoke, the council unanimously approved the city’s 2017 fee schedule. Among the changes is an increase in water and sewer utility fees, which for a residential user, will equate to an increase of $4.41 per month for sewer and $1.85 per month

Holiday Delivery Holiday Express Midian Fahey, a third-grader, was checking out possible gifts for mom and dad with the help of Elliana Fahey at Saturday’s (Dec. 3) Holiday Express at Belle Plaine Junior-Senior High School. Children at Holiday Express also had the chance to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, work on a Christmas craft and enjoy snacks. The event was sponsored by Belle Plaine Festivals and Events, Parent Teacher Organization and Early Childhood Family Education. (Below) Friday (Dec. 2), BPHS choir students performed holiday songs for State Bank of Belle Plaine guests at the bank’s annual holiday open house.

Belle Plaine Public Works staffers and a crew from John’s Mobil delivered the Santa House to the vacant lot at the southwest corner of Main and Meridian streets Friday morning (Dec. 2). The Santa House will be open Fridays Dec. 9 (5:30 to 7:30 p.m.) and Dec. 16 (4:30 to 6:30 p.m.). The Santa House is tentatively set to be open Saturday, Dec. 17, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

Fire Destroys Tractor in Blakeley Farm Field

Fire destroyed a mid-1990s era John Deere tractor as it was tilling a harvested field in Blakeley Township Saturday afternoon. Firefighters received a report of the fire just before 4:10 p.m. They found it in a field along Raven Road near 270th Street. The operator escaped the cab unharmed. Firefighters extinguished the flames when they arrived. The John Deere tractor was a total loss, said Belle Plaine Fire Chief Matt Stier. Firefighters are uncertain where the fire started or how it spread. “It was too burned up,” Stier said.

City’s 2017 Property Tax Levy Increase Will be Less Than Proposed The Belle Plaine City Council Monday night approved a final 2017 property tax levy that will be lower than the preliminary levy. In September, the council approved a preliminary 2017 property tax levy of $5,232,445, which would have been a 7.4 percent increase over this year’s levy of $4,871,139. City Finance Director Dawn Meyer told the council then that unpaid assessments of $131,000 for West Commerce Drive was among the factors leading to the 2017 levy increase. Since then, those assessments have been paid and added to the

2017 budget, allowing the levy to drop from an increase of 7.4 percent to 4.72 percent. Meyer said that among the factors attributed to the 4.72 percent levy increase are cost of living wage increases of 2.75 percent for a number of city employees and council members, increased services for a growing population and inflation. Monday night’s truth-in-taxation public hearing that preceded the council’s vote was an opportunity for citizens to comment on the city’s planned property tax levy and budget for the coming year. No one from the audience addressed the council.

Police Chief Tom Stolee reported that the new vehicle will replace a 2011 Chevrolet Impala that currently has approximately $100,000 miles on it. Equipment for outfitting the new vehicle will come from the Impala. Shakopee’s Derby Days Board Dissolves; Festival’s Future TBD Almost three months after longtime organizer Jack McGovern was found guilty of illegally using funds intended for operating Shakopee’s summer community festival, the board overseeing Derby Days has decided to dissolve. The decision leaves the future of the community festival in question. The Shakopee Valley News recently reported the decision to pull the plug on it was the result of a lack of support from the community and

lack of backing from the Shakopee City Council, which had previously provided the festival funding and staff support. Heidi VonBokern and Ryan Koch, two of the volunteers who ran a makeshift community festival last summer after Derby Days was suspended, said the existing board members hope the community can come together and reorganize to present Derby Days in the future.

Farm Service Agency Extends Deadline for Committee Elections The deadline to submit ballots for the USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) 2016 County Committee Elections has been extended to ensure farmers and ranchers have sufficient time to vote. Eligible voters now have until Dec. 13 to return ballots to their local FSA offices. Producers who have not received their ballot should pick one up at their local FSA office. FSA has modified the ballot, making it easily identifiable and less likely to be overlooked. Ballots returned by mail must be postmarked no later than Dec. 13. Newly-elected committee members will take office Jan. 1, 2017. Nearly 7,700 FSA County Committee members serve FSA

offices nationwide. Each committee has three to 11 elected members who serve three-year terms of office. One-third of county committee seats are up for election each year. County committee members apply their knowledge and judgment to help FSA make important decisions on its commodity support, conservation, indemnity, disaster and emergency programs. Producers must participate or cooperate in an FSA program to be eligible to vote in the County Committee election. Approximately 1.5 million producers are currently eligible to vote. Farmers and ranchers who supervise and conduct the farming operations of an entire farm, but are not of legal voting age, also may be eligible to vote.

New 60 MPH Speed Limit OK’d for Portions of Area Highways Drivers using Highway 5 from Highway 19 at Gaylord to Highway 212, Highway 13 north of Albert Lea and Highway 60 from Waterville to Kenyon will see speed limits raised from 55 mph to 60 mph on the twolane roadways, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT). The speed limits become official once the new signs are in place. Motorists are expected to see the Highway 13 signs posted first, followed by the Highway 60 signs from Waterville to the east. Installation is taking place now and continuing in December until it’s completed. “A properly selected speed limit can increase the safety of the roadway by reducing the variation in actual vehicle operating speeds, and by setting realistic driver expectations for motorists trying to cross or enter a roadway,” said Michael Schweyen, transportation engineer for Mn/DOT District 6, an 11-county region in southeast Minnesota. Highway 60 from Kenyon to Zumbro Falls will have 60 mph signs installed in the near future. Additional highways in southeastern Minnesota will

be posted 60 mph, including highways 30 and 56, with more highways to be evaluated in the coming years. Not all highway segments will be raised to 60 mph. Only those segments where the applicable criteria are met will be raised to 60 mph. In 2014, the Minnesota Legislature directed Mn/DOT to evaluate its two-lane, two-way 55 mph highways to determine whether speed limits could be reasonably and safely increased on its 55 mph, two-lane segments. The statewide study will end in 2019. Mn/DOT’s study of each highway segment included: access points, shoulder width, roadway alignment, assessment of roadside hazards, crash rates and history, and an analysis of motorist speeds. Motorists might see MnDOT sign crews posting the signs along the highways now or later this season as other roadways become approved for the new 60 mph speed limit. Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, Belle Plaine Christmas 2016 What a wonderful opening to the Christmas Season the Belle Plaine community had on Thursday, December 1. Most of the festive events took place in and around the Hooper-Bowler-Hillstrom House. There was something for everyone. Santa and Mrs. Claus were there for the young and young at heart. There were things for the older folks to enjoy and to remember of Christmas Past. Henretta Stiles, who lived in the home, was there to greet visitors and share happenings of Holidays gone by. There were indoor and outdoor events for everyone to enjoy on a wonderful winter evening. Horse drawn wagon rides, reindeer to see up close, a bonďŹ re, music, caroling, snacks, hot drinks, and the Community Christmas Tree lighting were all included in the evening activities. Photo ops were everywhere. The nearby historic TransďŹ guration Church was open for viewing with a performance by the Community Choir. Santa and Mrs. Claus would like to recognize the leadership and volunteers of the organizations involved. And also, we appreciate the business and organizations that provided sponsorships and funds for the event. It was the children, parents, and community members who came out to enjoy the party that made the evening such a success. To the Belle Plaine Community: a big pat on the back for a job well done. Thank you for letting us be a part, Santa & Mrs. Claus

Carver County OKs Solar Garden in Watertown Twp. After months of debate and a perceived threat of litigation from those proposing and opposing a solar garden along Highway 7 in Watertown Township, the Carver County Board recently approved a conditional-use permit for the project by a 3-2 margin. The approval came several weeks after the board voted directed staff to draw up socalled findings of fact rejecting the plan. NextEra and TruNorth are proposing the facility on 22 acres of a 68-acre parcel owned by Bruce Lenzen, the Waconia Patriot recently reported. The facility’s 17,604 solar panels will

generate up to 4.4 megawatts of electricity for the regional grid for 35 years until the facility is scheduled for decommissioning. Opponents of the solar garden claim the facility will have negative impacts on traffic and a nearby equestrian facility. They also claim the facility does not belong in an agricultural area. County Attorney Mark Metz said the proposal is suitable for the land up to this stage, though Metz conceded he is not an expert on comprehensive planning. With the threat of possible litigation from proponents and opponents of the proposed so-

An attorney for residents asked the board about deleted minutes from a previous meeting where commissioners directive staff to prepare findings of fact against the solar garden. Commissioners Tim Lynch of Hollywood Township and Randy Maluchnik voted against the proposal. Lynch represents Watertown Township. Maluchnik is expecting litigation for approving the solar garden as well as possible litigation against the board for allegedly violating Minnesota’s open meeting law.

It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. The Panthers would look to win the feature match of the night behind junior Jackson Stauffacher as he took on New Prague senior Sam Reyant. After Stauffacher got a second-period escape to take a 1-0 lead, Reyant scored a late escape in the third period to tie the match at 1-1 and send it into overtime. That’s when Stauffacher would get the match-winning take down as he stopped a Reyant shot with some good head and hand defense and then quickly spun behind for the 3-1 overtime win. At 138 pounds, Parker Huss sent Trojan Max Schefer ying to his back with a headlock on the edge of the mat that resulted in a pin fall call at 1:41 of the ďŹ rst period. Huss’ teammate, Jack Fogarty, followed suit as he went right to work against Ethan Gregory, and after scoring a solid single-leg take down, Fogarty used a powerful arm bar to run his opponent to his back for the ensuing pin fall call at 1:59 of the ďŹ rst period. It was also a solid start to the season for Scott West junior Tariq Smith as the 152-pounder used three take downs and a pair of third-period reversals to score an 11-6 win over Trevor Skogerboe. After returning state-qualiďŹ er Gaige Giles scored a ďŹ rstperiod pin of Panther Jeffery Kasper at 160, New Prague senior Nik Arguedas worked his way to a 15-7 major decision by scoring seven take downs on Panther freshman Jace Demmers at 170. “I think that this was the Panther varsity debut for both of these young wrestlers,â€? states coach Ripley. “They both went out and put forth a good effort and Jace in particular seemed to get better as the match went on and found a way to score the last points in his match.â€? There were not many points scored in the match at 182 pounds as Panther sophomore Jon Huss and Trojan Tyler Montanye traded a pair escapes during regulation as the match would move into overtime tied Legal Notices at one point apiece. During the overtime, Huss brought the Scott West crowd roaring to its feet as secured the match-winning take down, but he tacked on the bonus by tightly holding Montanye on his back for the overtime match-ending pin fall call. Deputies Continue to Search Lake for Missing Waconia Man

Cologne City Council Tells Hollanders to Pay Excess Costs

Carver County Sheriff’s deputies have narrowed their search for Andrew John Stifter to the southeast quadrant of Lake Waconia. They are preparing to continue the search if he is not found before ice forms on the lake. Tuesday morning (Dec. 6), Carver County Sheriff Chief Deputy Jason Kamerud said the search of land around the lake has been effectively completed. A team of deputies using sonar from a boat is searching the southeast section of the lake. The lake is 10 to 12 feet deep in the area. Divers will only enter the water if the sonar indicates the potential of Stifter’s body being located, Kamerud said. Should divers be unable to find Stifter, 35, before ice forms on the lake, the crews will “change their tactics” and search the lake using probes and cameras in-

The Cologne City Council sent the town baseball team two messages Monday night (Dec. 5), one informing the Hollanders they’ll have to pay excess costs of ballpark improvements and the other a somewhat subtle point addressing control over the use of the ballpark and the cost of operating the lights. The Hollanders asked the city council to pay the excess costs -- $641.50 – for concrete work above and beyond the $10,000 grant they received from the Minnesota Twins Community Fund, in-kind labor and a $2,762.50 donation from Cologne Fire Relief Association. The grant from the Twins was to improve the two dugouts at Fritz Field in Cologne. The concrete bases the dugouts sat on were removed, new bases were established and new dugouts built earlier this fall. Improved steps up the hill to the concession stand were also added to the project. Councilor Kyle Evenski estimated the uncovered costs of the ballpark improvement project could be closer to $900 once the permitting fees are included into the final cost of the ballpark improvement project. Council members, led by Mayor Scott Williams and Councilor Jeff McInnis, declined the request. “They knew what they had to work with on that project,” Williams said. “I don’t feel the city

serted through holes cut into the ice. Kamerud said the underwater search would be somewhat easier because the clarity of the water improves and underwater vegetation lays down after ice covers the surface. The search for Stifter began Saturday afternoon (Nov. 26) after a caller informed deputies

she saw an unoccupied paddleboard about 100 feet off the shoreline. Deputies arrived and learned Stifter, 35, had gone to Lake Waconia to photograph wildlife from his paddleboard. Sheriff’s deputies could see Stifter’s paddleboard offshore, but could not see Stifter. Deputies were able to go out to the paddleboard on a patrol boat and observed the paddleboard was upright and anchored, with a personal flotation device tethered to the front of the board. The deputies began their search efforts for Stifter. Deputies have searched over the lake using unmanned aerial cameras and Minnesota State Patrol helicopters. Carver County Sheriff’s deputies recovered property believed to belong to Stifter, but were unable to find Stifter during Monday’s (Nov. 28) search.

Former Chatfield Principal Among Finalists for Chaska District’s Top Job Jamesville-Waldorf-Pemberton Superintendent Bill Adams, the former principal at Chatfield Elementary School in Belle Plaine, is one of the finalists for the superintendent’s job in Chaska-based Eastern Carver County School District. Adams was principal at Chatfield for three years before leaving Belle Plaine for the top job in JWP in 2012. He is one of six finalists for the ECC position. Interviews began Monday (Dec. 5), the Chaska Herald recently reported. Today (Dec.

7), would be the earliest the district’s school board could consider who its next superintendent might be. Eastern Carver County School District Superintendent Jim Bauck plans to retire at the end of the school year. The other finalists for his job include Efe Agbamu, assistant superintendent for the Office of Multilingual Learning in the St. Paul School District; Jeff Holmberg, Prior Lake-Savage Area School District assistant superintendent; Josh Swanson, Eden

Prairie School District assistant superintendent; Clint Christopher, District 112 associate superintendent; and Steve Troen, Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School District director of teaching and learning.

Because Fritz Field is city property, McInnis and Williams questioned who controls scheduling of the ball field and who collects fees for its use and the accounting process for the fees. Evenski said he expected a representative of the association to be at the meeting. Pexa said the association was not notified it should send a representative to the meeting. The council indicated the issue could be revisited at the Dec. 19 meeting, the final meeting of 2016.

should be putting anything into it. They had a budget they were working with. They should have stayed within that budget.” McInnis and Williams also took note of the Hollanders not paying for the electricity for the lights. The team will be making its third and final payment of $22,500 for its share of the lights at Fritz Field, said Craig Pexa, a member of the Cologne Baseball Association. The city approved the purchase and installation of the lights in 2012 with the city and baseball association splitting the cost. Business and community leaders have haled the addition of lights, noting the night games have brought more people into the community supporting local businesses. Pexa said the lights were used for about 20 night games this past summer. He said the original estimates for electricity were about $7 per hour. But Pexa noted the city and baseball club never signed an agreement on cost sharing. McInnis suggested the city take control of the lights.

Belle Plaine Wins Two of First Three by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School girls’ basketball team accomplished in back-to-back nights what it took 18 games to do last year – pick up its first two victories of the season. Following a 53-49 seasonopening loss at Waterville-Elysian-Morristown last Tuesday night, the Tigers recorded a pair of victories (also on the road), defeating Janesville-WaldorfPemberton 64-52 and Cannon Falls 49-46 on Thursday and Friday nights, respectively. The Tigers were scheduled to host Sibley East in the Minnesota River Conference opener Tuesday night after this edition of the Herald went to press. Tri-City United will visit Belle Plaine for another MRC game 7:30 p.m. this Friday. WEM 53, Tigers 49 Belle Plaine led 37-36 with about six minutes to play but only few shots fell after that as the Bucs prevailed 53-49 in Waterville last Tuesday night. “They hit shots (late in the game) and we did not,” summed up Tigers coach Randy Carlson. Seven Tigers scored in the game, led by Elizabeth Johnson (13), Ireland Lambrecht (11) and Paige Narveson (9). The other scorers were Sarah Lenz (6), Lily Vinkemeier (5), Maria Larson (3) and Schuyler Sterk (2). The rebounding leaders were Vinkemeier with eight and Narveson seven. Lambrecht and Sterk both had six. Tigers 64, JWP 52 Narveson poured in 25 points and Johnson chipped in 13 to lead Belle Plaine at JanesvilleWaldorf-Pemberton Thursday night. “Offensively, we were a lot smoother in the half-court and had a better idea of what we wanted to do,” Carlson said. “I liked how we ran our fast break and attacked the basket and made good decisions. Paige Narveson was a much more balanced offensively player, scoring in different ways. Ireland Lambrecht showed a lot of leadership and was outstanding on the defensive boards. Elizabeth Johnson and Jaylen Struck-Schmitz did a great job of setting up good shots. Joining Narveson and Johnson in scoring for Belle Plaine were

Lenz (11), Struck-Schmitz (6), Lambrecht (5), Vinkemeier (3) and Lauren Johnson (1). Lambrecht had 11 rebounds and Johnson had six assists and four steals. Tigers 49, Cannon Falls 46 The Tigers scored 20 of the game’s first 26 points but led by only 25-23 at halftime of what would eventually be a hardfought 49-46 victory over the Bombers Friday night in Cannon Falls. “We started out really well in all phases of the game but we missed some shots and had defensive breakdowns that allowed them to get back into the game,” Carlson said. The Tigers built the lead back up to double digits in the second half before the Bombers rallied again to pull within one point (47-46) with about a minute to play. Johnson made a couple of key free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Narveson topped the 20-point plateau for the second night in a row with a game-high 22 points. Johnson added 12, followed by Lenz (6), Larson (5), Struck-Schmitz (2) and VinkeBelle Plaine’s Lily Vinkemeier disrupted a shot by a WEM meier (2). player last Tuesday night in Waterville. Vinkemeier also had Girls’ Basketball eight rebounds and scored five points. (continued on page 7)

Scott West Starts Strong

The Belle Plaine High School boys’ basketball team logged plenty of bus miles and a victory to start the 2016-17 campaign Saturday at Fairmont. The 69-57 win over the taller Cardinals came byway of a balanced scoring attack in which all five Belle Plaine scorers reached double figures. Leading the way was Nathan Herman with 21 points, followed by fellow senior Brody Curtiss with 16. They combined to make 16 of 22 free throws. Also scoring for the Tigers were Noah Hastings (11), Andrew Hunsader (11) and Patrick Bigaouette (10). Curtiss grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds, while Bigaouette and Matt Nelson had eight and seven, respectively. “We used full-court pressure defense and strong rebounding to defeat a very good and very tall Fairmont team,” said Tigers coach Paul Fogarty. “Our effort was terrific throughout this entire game. Patrick Bigaouette provided a spark with a strong all-around performance.” A 12-0 run by Belle Plaine midway through first half turned a one-point deficit into a double-digit lead. The Scott West wrestling team opened up its 2016-17 season with a convincing 47-19 win over rival New Prague before a big Scott West crowd in Belle Plaine on Thursday night. Although the Trojans got on the board first behind freshman Colby Dunkel’s 9-4 win over freshman Colton Bahr, the Panthers took control of the meet by winning the next seven matches, starting with 113pound freshman Jacob Hill as he scored a 13-0 major decision over Joe DeJong. The decorative moldings on the wagons are made from latex poured into molds Albrecht made. “The only parts I buy are the wheels, he said. “They cost about $2 each. They’d take about two hours each to make. Each wagon is colorfully painted by hand. “This is a way for my children and grandchildren to remember me, Leo said. He suffers from congestive heart failure. Medication has improved his heart’s pumping capacity to 20 percent. Doctors placed a small pacemaker-defibrillator in Leo’s chest a few years back to keep his heart beating in rhythm. Leo has begun passing the wagons and other memorabilia on to family members who’ll appreciate the Albrecht family’s history in the circus. The wagons are animal cages and calliopes. His last wagon was a horse-drawn ice wagon. the stage Leo built and pack it all up in trucks and begin the trek for the next performance in the next town. Albrecht left Albright Family Attractions in 1959 when it was time for the first of Gloria and Sonny’s six children -- Mike, Theresa, Tom, Dale, Mary and Joe -- to begin school. “It was exciting, the travel and all the other circus performers we met, Leo said. “It was a lot of work, but it was a lot of fun.

Wedding Announcement

Gloria’s grandfather owned the Gould Circus. Small circuses often worked together. Leo and Gloria met in 1947 when Albright’s Attractions rolled into town. “I was living with my grandfather and all of a sudden these big trucks pulled in, Gloria said. “I chased him around until he caught me. They were married in June of 1953. Gloria performed on the aerial swing ladder with Albright’s Attractions until it was time to start their family and settle down in Belle Plaine. He served in the U.S. Navy as Leo Albrecht has made over 70 circus wagons. He’s been giv- an aircraft mechanic during the ing them away to family and friends who’ll appreciate his mid-1950s. Today, replicas of those wagons and preserved artifacts of those circus days are in tact at the Albrecht’s home in the southwest corner of Belle Plaine. He has made over 70 circus wagons in his shop. The wagons are created with painstaking care in his downstairs shop. After retiring from the circus, Leo went to work for Keup Motors in the service department. After retiring from the dealership, he works on the wagons for hours at a time during the day. The wagons are designed with precise details preserved in Leo’s memory. Using hand tools, a portable jigsaw, balsam and 1/8-inch plyboard, the wagons have taken an average of about 20 hours each to make.

Barbers Point Naval Air Station in Hawaii. He left the service and rejoined the family circus. In 1955, Leo built the circus a 32-by-40 foot folding portable stage using only a hand saw and an electric drill. The stage, the equipment on which they performed, the lights and other elements of a performance took about three hours to set up before the audience showed up to watch the performance. After the show, they’d take down the equipment, fold up

Albrecht Securing A Future for a Lifetime of Memories

Leo Albrecht Jr. has done as much during his lifetime as anyone. His history is rich with performing in the family circus. Now in the winter of his life, Albrecht, 87, is securing those memories with family and friends. He worked in the family circus, Albright’s Attractions, during the 1950s through the 1960s, following in his father’s footsteps. Leo Albrecht Sr. was both performer and organizer in the small circus that traveled from Canada to Mexico, Wyoming to the East Coast. He performed on a slack wire, one of the few men in American circuses with the expertise to cross the loose wire over the stage. Working alongside his father earned Leo Jr. the nickname, “Sonny. It’s a moniker he still carries proudly, long after his dad’s passing in 1989. “We worked 300 days a year, Albrecht said. Albrecht’s brothers -- Dave and Gary -- both performed in the circus. His sister-in-law Arlene also performed. His mother, Angela, was not a performer. She maintained the home front in Belle Plaine, Leo said. As a young man working in the family circus, “Sonny handled many tasks. He made his debut in Marcus, Iowa as a 6-year-old acrobat performing on his father’s shoulders in the mid-1930s. Over the years, he performed mostly with dogs and ponies and performed emcee duties. When the circus wasn’t performing, young Leo’s jobs included booking dates in small towns and handling behind-thescenes logistics. When the Minnesota State Fair Convention held its annual meetings, Leo would rent space at a hotel and book dates in small towns across the United States. The family traveled across the country in a caravan of trucks and wagons. The longest road trip between shows took them from a town in Wyoming to Rhinelander, Wis. It was a 600-mile trek. “Those were the days when the trucks traveled at about 35 mph. It was a long drive, said Gloria Albrecht, Sonny’s wife of 63 years. They didn’t often perform in Belle Plaine. Leo recalls a few shows in town over the years. The performances were typically a benefit for Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church (known today as Our Lady of the Prairie).
