Will Go on Stage 11 a.m. Thursday The Belle Plaine High School one-act play, “Anatomy of Gray,” will be vying for its 12th starred performance rating at the state level in program history when it competes at this Thursday’s Minnesota State High School Class 1A One-Act Play Festival at O’Shaughnessy Auditorium on the campus of St. Catherine University in St. Paul. “Anatomy of Gray” beat out seven other plays at Saturday’s Section 2A One-Act Play Festival in Jordan. Only the firstplace play advances to state. Finishing second was Mountain Lake with its play “The Middle of Yesterday.” Other schools competing at Jordan Saturday were defending section champion Maple River, Le SueurHenderson, Medford, Springfield, St. Clair and St. Peter. “We were rated ‘exemplary’ by two of the judges in all five categories they rank us in, including physical characterizations, vocal characterizations, technical elements, educational value and overall effectiveness of ensemble. The third judge gave us all ‘excellent’ ratings,” said Tony Hartmann, who along with Carol Hannon-Orr is BPHS’s codirector. Belle Plaine will perform at approximately 11 a.m. this Thursday. Plays continue throughout the day and the cost is $10 for both adults and students for a single session (four plays). A daily pass can be purchased for $15. The first play is at 9:15 a.m. and the last starts at 4 p.m. All the section champions in 1A and their performance times Thursday are Trinity School at River Ridge (9:15 a.m.), Browerville-Eagle Valley (10 a.m.), Belle Plaine (11 a.m.), East Central (11:45 a.m.), Hawley (1:30 p.m.), Russell-TylerRuthton (2:15 p.m.), Fillmore Central (3:15 p.m.) and Bagley (4 p.m.). Belle Plaine’s “Anatomy of Gray” tells the story of June Muldoon, a 15-year-old girl growing up in a small Indiana town in the 1880s. When June’s father dies, she prays for a healer to come to the small town so that no one will ever

State Bank of Belle Plaine Gets High Rating from National Publication The State Bank of Belle Plaine has received an A+ national financial health rating from DepositAccounts.com, one of the nation’s leading bank healthmonitoring publications. “The bank stood out in all of the primary evaluation categories, including Texas Ratio, Deposit Growth and Capitalization,” stated Patrick Russo of DepositAccounts.com. “The A+ rating also places State Bank in the highest tier (top 10

percent) of the approximately 13,000 federally-insured banks and credit unions nationwide in terms of financial health.” Each fiscal quarter, Deposit Accounts.com evaluates the financial health of every federally-insured bank in the United States – more than 6,200 total. Each institution is graded on a number of factors, including capitalization, deposit growth and loan to reserve ratios, in order to determine a comprehensive health rating.

Diverse Groups Aim to Make Belle Plaine Dementia-Friendly In a city the size of Belle Plaine, Jan Zimmerman estimates just over 70 people and their families live with dementia each day. Community leaders, members of area churches and The Lutheran Home Association are working together to help families and their neighbors take better care of these special residents. An initial community meeting to develop a dementia action alliance in Belle Plaine held Jan. 26 attracted about 25 people from backgrounds as diverse as business, government and faith communities. The group’s goal is to help make Belle Plaine a more dementia-friendly community. Based on the interest, the group plans to meet again next Thursday (Feb. 18, noon) at the Ratskellar in Kingsway Retirement Living (815 Main Street W.). “I was very touched by the passion I saw, said Zimmerman, The Lutheran Home Association’s director of dementia outreach. Through Life’s Joys, Challenges, B.P. Couple Still Valentines

He recalls coming home from military service just before the end of the Korean War. They met over six decades ago at a dance hall in Sioux Falls, S.D. She was tall and strikingly pretty. Junell Remme knew right away she was someone special. Today, Junell awaits his wife June’s daily visits. They are the highlight of his day. Though they live a block apart on The Lutheran Home campus, June at Kingsway and Junell at the nursing home, they are connected by 62 years together. At 85, Junell is suffering the affects of congestive heart failure and other health challenges. June lives in the apartment they found in August of 2014. She enjoys the activities the staff schedules and conducts for residents. But each day after lunch, June makes her way to the nursing home to see her husband. Kingsway Retirement Living was the place they planned to spend the sunset of their lives together. They had lived in Pipestone, Minn. for many years. Junell worked for Northern States Power, which later became Xcel Energy. June worked in the Pipestone School District as an aid in the library when their youngest child started in first grade. Later, she began working in the high school. After retirement in 1997, June and Junell moved to their lake home in Motley, Minn. In 2014, the couple decided a four-bedroom home near the lake was more than they needed when their family was all in the Twin Cities area. They moved from Motley to Belle Plaine in the summer of 2014 to be near their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren living in the metro area. June and Junell rented the apartment at Kingsway without any thought of The Lutheran Home’s nursing facility a block away. They had both enjoyed relatively healthy during their younger years. “We’ve had our ups and downs, like many others, she said. “But with a lot of prayers, forgiveness, saying you’re sorry and ‘I love you’, you get through the tough times.

Thanksgiving Illness

It wasn’t until Thanksgiving when Junell fell ill. A bout with pneumonia sent him to Ridgeview Medical Center. He had been managing his heart condition until then and had even fended off a case of lym-

Junell and June Remme will be celebrating Valentine’s Day together at The Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine. In 2014, the couple moved to an apartment at Kingsway Retirement Living in Belle Plaine. A bout with pneumonia sent Junell to the nursing home. June visits her husband there each day. phoma. Doctors said Junell’s prognosis was not good. The pneumonia forced the couple to make some difficult choices. The nearby nursing home allowed them to stay close enough where June could visit her husband each day. He moved into the nursing home in December. “It’s really a blessing we can be so close, June said. ‘You get through the tough times with the help of the Lord. Junell recalls the day in January, 1953 when he met June. His sister, Janet, arranged the meeting at the Arkota Ballroom at the corner of 13th Street and Phillips Avenue in Sioux Falls. The two young women worked together in an office building in the small city. The ballroom had welcomed home soldiers from military service since the mid-1920s. Junell still thanks his younger sister for arranging the meeting. Through the years, the Arkota served as host to wonderful talents from the big band and swing era as well as rock ’n’ roll acts. The Sioux Falls Argus Leader reported performers of note include Count Basie, Gene Krupa, Artie Shaw, Duke Ellington, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Lawrence Welk, Guy Lumbardo and Dion and the Belmonts, as well as local music legends Myron Lee and the Caddies. They began courting. Junell recalls asking June to marry him six months later, during a drive in the country. “The Lord brought us together, he said. They were married the following October at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hendricks, Minn. Sixty-two years later, they have been blessed with four children – Bruce, Laurie, Rhonda and Brian. They have nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Three more great-grand children are expected this spring. Their children, grandchildren

and great-grandchildren are a testament to June and Junell’s life together. “We have a great family with many blessings, she said.

Kingsway Retirement Living, a ministry of The Lutheran Home Association (TLHA), has won the Best of Assisted Living Award from SeniorAdvisor for the third consecutive year. The award is based on receiving consistently high ratings from residents and their families. “Our team member’s commitment to providing quality Christian care is recognized by our residents and family members, said Karl Keup, administrator of Kingsway Retirement Living. Kingsway offers independent living, assisted living and memory care services as part of a 22-acre continuum of care campus in Belle Plaine. In its most recent review on SeniorAdvisor.com, a resident’s daughter shared her impression of Kingsway’s welcoming environment and caring team. “My father was blessed beyond words to spend his last six weeks of life in Kingsway’s memory care, she wrote. “It not only is a beautiful facility to live in but more importantly, the staff is outstanding and full of passion and unconditional love for each resident, not to men-

The Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) is encouraging farmers to take part in its annual pesticide and fertilizer use survey. The 2016 survey is directed at corn producers and hay growers. The data helps the MDA track the use of agricultural chemicals on Minnesota farms and provides guidance to educational and research programs. The survey process should begin Feb. 10 and be completed by Feb. 28. Questions will focus on the 2015 growing season and survey farmers on pesticide applications on corn and hay grown in Minnesota, and on best management practices when it comes to nitrogen and manure applied to corn. The annual survey is completely voluntary and no personal ques-

tions are asked of producers. Minnesota farmers may be getting calls from multiple agencies and companies conducting a variety of surveys this time of year, but the information gathered from this survey is critical for research purposes. The survey is conducted for the MDA by the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agriculture Statistics Service out of its regional ofďŹ ces in Missouri. The MDA has conducted this annual survey for the past decade. If you have questions about the MDA’s annual survey, or if you wish to view results of previous surveys, visit http://www.mda. state.mn.us/chemicals/pestfertsurvey.aspx. Producers can also call the Minnesota Department of Agriculture at 651-261-1993 between 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Tree Removal to Begin Along 169 Between St. Peter and Mankato Highway 169 motorists between Mankato and St. Peter can expect to see workers removing trees on the side of the roadway as soon as Feb. 10 that will result in shoulder and lane restrictions during daylight hours. The tree removal is preliminary work for the construction on Highway 169 from Mankato to St. Peter that will result in a detour in April. The majority of the tree removals are on the west side (bluff) of the highway, but there are a few locations on the river side. The trees need to be cleared that will impact construction operations and/or leaning trees that pose a hazard to the traveling public. Other work that will take place this winter under lane restrictions includes muck excavation and hauling in ďŹ ll materials

in the area of Old River Bluff Road. Motorists are also advised to be aware of additional trucks leaving and exiting the work areas on north and southbound lanes. A current detour map and expected timeline can be found at www.dot.state.mn.us/d7/ projects/oodmitigation/. Interested persons can also sign up for e-mail updates throughout the project. The project includes raising the grade in four ood-prone areas (Hiniker Mill, 7-mile Creek, Old River Road, and State Hospital) to raise the road above the 100-year ood, six miles of resurfacing for a smoother road and a median barrier to prevent head-on crashes. The $30 million project received a $9.8 million grant from the EDA (Economic Development Administration).

This exclusive designation places the winners in the top 1 percent of the senior living communities nationwide, according to consumers. “Families are increasingly looking to online reviews to ďŹ nd out who truly delivers great care for our seniors, not just who claims to deliver great care,â€? said Eric Seifert, president of SeniorAdvisor.com. “Our SeniorAdvisor.com Awards program is all about celebrating the exceptional people who do just that. U.S. Rep. Kline to Honor B.P. Residents as Stars of the North

Two Belle Plaine residents will receive U.S. Rep. John Kline’s “Star of the North awards for their service to their community. The 10th annual Star of the North presentation ceremony is Tuesday (Feb. 16) in Lakeville. Belle Plaine’s Tricia Maleca and Presley Volek will be among the approximately 100 recipients of the congressman’s awards.

Tricia Malecha

Malecha, 29, wanted to show support to women and moms served by Belle Plaine-based Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women during the holidays by giving them a new purse and personal care items for them and their children. She established collection sites for donated purses and personal care items within her community. Malecha was overwhelmed with the community’s response. The drive she started received about 200 donated purses and personal items, gift cards, and toothbrushes. The purses ďŹ lled with the items and delivered to Southern Valley Alliance for

Battered Women for distribution just before Christmas to women in need. “I was very surprised, Malecha said of the honor. “I was just trying to help people out. It (her effort) wasn’t that big a thing that it would have gotten back to a congressman.

Presley Volek

Five-year-old Presley Volek is a kindergartener at ChatďŹ eld Elementary School in Belle Plaine. Last summer, she showed a determination that every child starting school would have a new backpack with supplies like she did. With the help and support of a dozen local businesses, Volek and her mom, Caycie, distributed collection boxes in the community and received 137 backpacks, hundreds of school supplies, and about $300 in cash. They used the money to purchase winter clothes for Belle Plaine children who didn’t have warm clothes. “We thought we’d get about 20 backpacks,â€? said Caycie Volek, Presley’s mother. “We set a good foundation for what’s going to happen next year and the years after.â€?

Presley is the daughter of, Caycie and Nick Volek. Over the past several years, there have been numerous examples individuals who gave selessly for the beneďŹ t of others, Kline said. The stories of past Stars of the North recipients feature people and organizations alike throughout the Second Congressional District who recognized needs in the community and stepped forward to serve. These individuals are not serving to earn an award or fulďŹ ll a requirement, he said, but are serving because they are compelled to better their community. “We are blessed in Minnesota to be surrounded by so many seless individuals who are willing to step up to address the needs they see in our communities and beyond,â€? Kline said. “These ‘Stars of the North’ have given far more than they have received --volunteering, offering a helping hand, reaching out to a neighbor to ask, ‘What can I do for you?’ “ Because of limited capacity of the school auditorium, the Feb. 16 event is for the recipients and their invited guests.

BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA

Thirty Years Ago This Week

in the Trinity Lutheran Church parlors.

90 Years Ago (1926)

New York Turkeys Released in Blakeley Many spectators were on hand to ďŹ lm the release of nine wild turkeys near the Elroy Riesgraf farm in Blakeley Township in early 1986. Across the road was the “Wild 80,â€? which was owned by the Park Foundation and was expected to provide a good home for the birds. The wild turkeys, which were not yet common in this region, came from the state of New York. One of the DNR men predicted that if the turkeys ourish, the area may see an increase in the population of wild coyotes. The Belle Plaine School Board that Monday night reversed its earlier decision and voted to hire a part-time sixth grade teacher instead of a teacher aide. The board had voted to hire Mary Miller to serve afternoons to take some of the load off sixth grade teacher Joan Hafslund, but teachers indicated that was not an educationally-sound decision. Miller agreed to step aside under the circumstances. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency granted Belle Plaine a grant of $35,365, which would be applied to pay about 47 percent of the engineer’s preliminary design fee for the city’s sewage lagoon expansion project. The city hoped to begin construction of a third cell to the city’s sewage lagoon sometime in 1987. Pharmacist Dale. J. Otto worked was working in preparation of the opening of his new drug store at 617 East Main Street. The store was to become known as Otto Drug Express and Gift. It ofďŹ cially opened on Monday, Feb. 10. Scott County commissioners took steps to tighten up county regulations governing expense records after State Auditor Arne Carlson criticized the county’s handling of expense claims in an annual audit of the county. Commissioner William Koniarski said expense recordkeeping by the county would be improved as a result of Carlson’s comments and because of those made earlier by the county’s own internal auditor, Ray Vyskocil. The estimated value of Minnesota farmland averaged 26 percent less in 1985 than in 1984. This was the largest percentage one-year decline in the 75-year history of the yearly survey conducted by the University of Minnesota. The average statewide value was $686, or $241 less than the 1984 average of

$927. Sixth-grader Jennifer McDougald, daughter of William and Cheryl McDougald, was Belle Plaine’s top public school speller. Jennifer correctly spelled “heroineâ€? and then correctly spelled “forfeitâ€? to win the school’s annual spelling bee. Tammy Bauer, daughter of Roger and Carol Bauer, came in second and would serve as Jennifer’s alternate at the regional contest March 14 in Mankato. Nine wild turkeys obtained from the state of New York were released in Blakeley Township. Wildlife ofďŹ cials said the turkeys were received by the DNR in exchange for Hungarian partridge, which New York was stocking in order to provide additional hunting opportunities in that state. The exchange rate was about ďŹ ve partridge for each turkey. The turkeys were trapped Jan. 29, own to Minnesota and released within 48 hours of their capture. The BPHS boys’ basketball team lost to Le Sueur 57-44 and Norwood 48-40. Brad Johnson led the Tigers in scoring both games with 15 and 10 points, respectively. 60 Years Ago (1956)

The top oor of the Werner Rolf farm home, about eight miles northeast of Belle Plaine, was leveled by ďŹ re. The origin of the ďŹ re was not known. A group of friends and relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bahrke, the occasion being Mr. Bahrke’s 70th birthday. The annual Firemen’s Dance drew its usual large attendance. Both weather and roads were favorable and there was good attendance from the countryside. A car driven by Wm. Renee, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Renee, collided with a taxi cab in Minneapolis, sending Renee and Theresa Fahey, who was riding with him, to the hospital. Both were released after treatment of cuts and bruises. A ďŹ re that broke out suddenly and raged between the walls of the Oscar Luedloff farm home completely gutted the 10-room structure in a blaze that found ďŹ remen from Cologne and Chaska battling ames for over two hours. The Belle Plaine Fire Department appointed a committee to look for a new system for receiving ďŹ re alarms. At present, the telephone operator was acting as the go-between, ringing the ďŹ re’s alarm and dispatching the trucks. However, after the soon-to-be telephone dial system is in place, there would be no local operator to take the calls. James Frank, son of Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Frank of Belle Plaine Township, was serving as executive secretary of SPAN (Student Project for Amity Among Nations). Ben Castens, 62, who spent about all his lifetime on the Castens farm in Jessenland, died at Veterans Hospital. Ronald Effertz and Mrs. John Onstad were named co-chairmen for the Belle Plaine Heart Fund Drive. Edwin Harms, who had been renting near Norwood, bought the very ďŹ ne 160-acre farm of LeRoy Galles six miles north of Belle Plaine. Gov. Orville Freeman was asked to support a project that would create a 9-foot navigational channel in the Minnesota River from Mendota to Shakopee. Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Galles celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house

A move was on to organize a troop of Boy Scouts in Belle Plaine. Collection taken up for the purpose came to $220. Jacob Allers, Mrs. John Westphal and Mrs. Jacob Holsten were called to Sandstone for the funeral of their brother, Peter Allers, who died at the age of 60. He lived in Belle Plaine during his younger years. Ellsworth Wherley was back from Berthold, N.D., for a visit with the Wherley families in Faxon Township. Tom O’Neill returned from California, where he had spent the winter, to take over the operation of his father’s farm. At St. Peter and Paul’s parsonage took place the marriage of Miss Pearl GrifďŹ n of Jordan and Henry Meyer of Belle Plaine. A group of local men for a drive north of Blakeley came upon a covey of prairie chickens. They estimated the covey had over 100 chickens. None had ever seen so large a covey before. The Wm. Bohligs were back from Cleveland, N.D., for a visit among old neighbors. Since leaving Belle Plaine, they started farming 900 acres in North Dakota. G.S. Gabbert, who was in charge of the telegraph ofďŹ ce at Merriam, moved back to Belle Plaine to look after his aged parents, making daily trips to his work at Merriam. Mrs. Catherine Riley of Grand Forks, N.D., who was making her home with her nephews and nieces, the Duggans in Faxon Township, died. Her remains were brought to Grand Forks for burial. Tony Oster, 47, who made his home in Belle Plaine in his younger years, met death in an accident at the packing plant in South St. Paul. At West Union Church took place the marriage of Miss Mildred Larson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Larson, to Earl Olson, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Olson, Rev. K.M. Holmberg ofďŹ ciating. At its annual meeting, the Belle Plaine creamery reported manufacturing 405,056 pounds of butter the preceding year. The average price paid was 43.5 cents. OfďŹ cers of the creamery were President Wm. Reinke, Vice President Gus Hurtig, Secretary Chas. Bowler and Manager F.J. Heiland. In Minneapolis took place the marriage of James C. Brown and Cecilia Sullivan.

Sen. Dahle Planning Town Hall Meeting Visit to Belle Plaine Sen. Kevin Dahle is planning another sweep of town hall meetings across the senate district. He’ll be in Belle Plaine next Saturday (Feb. 13). The town hall meeting here is slated for the Belle Plaine Public Library (125 Main Street W.), 1:45 to 2:45 p.m. Dahle is billing the meetings as an opportunity to listen to constituents throughout eight meetings in eight cities. He is looking to hear from constituents regarding the issues important to them as the Minnesota Senate prepares for the upcoming legislative session beginning in March. He will also share information on the initiatives he has been working on over the past months. Constituents will have the opportunity to ask questions about

upcoming bills and current legislative priorities. “I look forward to hosting these town hall meetings every year. Being able to connect with my constituents and hear what legislation they are most passionate about is essential, Dahle said. “I take ideas and attitudes from my constituents into account every time I make a legislative decision. Dahle will arrive in Belle Plaine after town hall meetings in Le Sueur at the public library from 9 to 9:45 a.m. and in Le Center at city hall from 12:30 to 1 p.m. After the meeting in Belle Plaine, he’ll meet with residents in New Prague at the public library from 3 to 4 p.m., followed by a town hall meeting in Elko New Market at the Firehouse Grill.

Man With Gun Sends Jordan Schools Into Soft Lockdown

A police standoff with a man carrying a .45-caliber handgun threatening to take his own life sent Jordan Public Schools in lockdown last Wednesday morning (Feb. 3). At approximately 8:35 a.m., Jordan police received information that a distraught man armed with a .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun and threatening to take his own life left his residence in a vehicle. At approximately 9:05 a.m., the man was located in his vehicle parked on Beaumont Boulevard between Aberdeen Avenue and Old Highway 169 Boulevard, not far from Jordan’s public school buildings. Police from Jordan, Belle Plaine and sheriff’s deputies established a perimeter around the vehicle a safe distance away, according to Jordan Police Chief Brett Empey. Because of the proximity to the vehicle, all Jordan Public School District buildings were placed on a precautionary soft lockdown, the chief said. Police attempted several unanswered phone calls to man before establishing contact with him. Shortly thereafter, at approximately 9:42 a.m., he

surrendered and was taken into custody without incident. The handgun was located loaded inside the man vehicle. The lockdown was lifted shortly after the man was taken into custody. The man was transported to an area hospital to be seen by mental health professionals, Empey said.

Minnesota Soldier Scholarships The Minnesota Soldier Scholarship was established to provide funds to active military personnel or a veteran who has served at least 180 days of active military duty and honorably discharged who wish to further their education. The applicant must be a Minnesota resident. For applications and rules, contact Judy Otto of Belle Plaine Ladies Auxiliary Post 6202 at 952873-2913. The deadline to apply is April 1.

St. Thomas by: Loni Graham The next mass in St. Thomas is February 21 at 9 a.m. with Father James Burns. Masses at St. Anne’s in Le Sueur are Saturdays at 5:15 p.m., Sundays at 8 and 10:30 a.m. with Father Andrew Stueve. Armella Holden’s sister, Mary Ann Krautkremer of Montgomery, passed away Friday, February 5, 2016 at Traditions of Montgomery. Visitation was on Monday, February 8 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 o’clock. Father George Grafsky officiated. Burial was at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in rural Montgomery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Our sympathies to their family. The play “Oz put on by St. Wenceslaus students was awesome, entertaining and well attended, by many St. Thomas folks as well. All of the actors and actresses did a fantastic job. Emily Sullivan, one of our Le Sueur-Henderson 6th graders is a very good speller. So good she won the 2015-16 District Spelling Bee, beating out the top spellers, in grades 5-8, sending her to the regional competition in North Mankato on February 23. Spellers from 46 area schools will compete to earn a trip to the Scripps National Spelling Bee held in Washington, D.C., the first week of June. Hattie Tuck finished a close second overall, after her good friend Emily. We have some brilliant

youngsters here in St. Thomas. How does she feel about her chances at the next level? With a shrug and a smile, Emily wisely replied, “It depends on how hard the words are! Brandon O’Connell’s favorite in-laws, Norm and Deenie Sticha, were among the friendly folks at the St. Patrick’s Fish Fry, Friday evening. “Gene and Sharon Retka motored to Franklin, Kentucky last week for dinner with Tom Brown and wife. Tom and Gene hadn’t seen each other for about 55 years. They spent countless hours at Regan’s store soaking up the wisdom of the likes of Nicolas Moore, Jimmy Regan, Leo Savage, Omer Meyer, James O’Connell, Jack Burns and others. Tom is enjoying retirement with his wife in rural Franklin after a career in banking. Two of their kids live nearby and the third lives in Washington DC, Gene reported. While a cold wind blew threw, many were cozied in at Kenny and Debbie O’s home as they hosted a Super Bowl party for a good crowd Sunday evening. Among the partiers Dick and Carol, Mike and Paula O’Connell, Tom and Kathy Connelly, Iris Sullivan, Chuck and Marie Retka, the Simons, Brett, Tammy, Carlie, Mason, Lindsey and Addie, Andy and Barb Oak and Debbie’s sister, Susie and Jim Mc Millen and Tom and Loni Graham. Good food, good seats, great company. Not just St. Thomas: The Le Sueur County Snowmobile Trails Association want snowmobilers to stay on the trails.

Several incidents of snowmobiles riding on private property without permission were reported. Trail groups and clubs work hard getting permission from landowners to place trails across private property, and want to stress that all snowmobilers must help maintain the good relationship with private landowners. So snowmobilers, the trails are groomed often, please stay on the trails. 2016 Masopust King Billy Odenthal is the son of Ted and Tracy Odenthal of Heidelberg, grandson of Connie and Julie Odenthal, and great-grandson of Theodore and Gert Glisczinski Odenthal. The 2016 St. Patrick’s Day Candidates at Le Center, who with ancestral roots in St. Thomas, are Megan Rutt, the daughter of Joe and Jennifer Rutt and granddaughter of Gary and Shirley Rutt; Erin Budin, granddaughter of Warren and the late Judy Connelly, greatgranddaughter of Paddy and Dorothy Germscheid Connelly; Regan Schatz, daughter of Lonnie and Sue Smith Schatz, granddaughter of Joe and Carol O’Connell Schatz, great-granddaughter of Pat and Lorraine Jelinek O’Connell, and Joe and Marian Schatz; Alison Holden, daughter of Aric and Jill Trimbo Holden and granddaughter of Tom and Max Denzer Holden, Les and Rosemary Baines Trimbo. Each candidate displays their family tree as part of the competition, we’ll get the rest of this story. Loretta O’Connell turns 90 years young on Feb. 17. That’s all folks, have a Happy Valentine’s Day.

Dementia (continued from page 2)

an opportunity to launch a dementia outreach model to improve the lives of persons with dementia and their family caregivers, said Catherine Berghoff, TLHA’s director of grant resource development and program administration. The development of dementia action alliances in rural communities is an essential outreach component, Zimmerman said. The association is basing its local dementia action alliance effort on a successful campaign underway in Watertown, Wis., home to another of its senior living communities. “The story has long been about fear, loss of purpose and isolation. We want to change that story to one of hope, meaning and connection, she said.

Become an Advocate

“With this grant, a key project goal is to provide extensive education to the community, including businesses and emergency medical services,â€? Zimmerman said. “The No. 1 thing we’re ďŹ nding is the majority of people don’t have a true understanding of dementia and how to support those with dementia. We’re not asking individuals to become dementia specialists, we are asking them to become advocates.â€? Citizens gathered at the dementia community meeting represented banks, insurance, the library, the grocery store, the city, the ďŹ re department, churches, private school, local transportation and the com-

munity at large. They identiďŹ ed some of Belle Plaine’s strengths as active civic groups, quality medical care, multigenerational relationships, TLHA’s leadership, availability of transportation and a strong faith community. “I think the churches are willing to work together ecumenically, and not all communities can say that,â€? said Rev. Diane Goulson, pastor at Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in rural Henderson.

Challenges to Living With Dementia

Challenges identiďŹ ed were public transportation on a regular schedule, variety in social and entertainment opportunities and limited support groups for family caregivers and those with dementia. Zimmerman said people living with dementia live at facilities like The Lutheran Home: Belle Plaine and Kingsway. Others likely remain at home with family care partners. “The majority of people do not want to leave their home, but supports are limited for them to continue being part of the community,â€? Zimmerman said, adding this can lead to isolation. “Those who isolate themselves are potentially more likely to progress faster with the disease, than those who keep a connection with the community.â€? Making Belle Plaine a dementia-friendly community could include something as simple as

Meet Randy.

having a clerk available to help dementia patients while they shop. It’s a small effort that can help dementia patients remain part of the community rather than at home, unable to get out and participate in everyday life, Zimmerman said. “There seems to be a lot of willingness in the community to help others,â€? said Rob Rosenau, who works at Coborn’s in Belle Plaine. Ways to support those with dementia — and their care partners — include offering social opportunities, providing public awareness and ensuring access to local establishments and the ability to safely navigate the community. Other ways the newly-forming group can help families dealing with dementia is providing information on technology to alert caregivers if a patient leaves a house without supervision or motion alerts, medication reminders. It could even provide information, Zimmerman said, on the availability of area day services for people living with dementia. Lunch will be provided at Thursday’s meeting, and the meeting is open to any new members interested in joining. Group members will deďŹ ne their goals and next steps, choose a title for the alliance and select leaders. The Lutheran Home Association will provide education and assist local organizations in making positive changes to help support those with dementia, Zimmerman said.

It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. Sundblad Trial Delayed

Sixteen months after he was charged and arrested in connection with the death of his infant son in the spring of 2014, Joshua Sundblad’s trial is being pushed back on the Scott County District Court calendar. Sundblad was indicted for ďŹ rst-degree murder (while committing child abuse with past pattern of child abuse) in October. The indictment also includes two counts of ďŹ rstdegree assault, one count of second-degree manslaughter, and two counts of third-degree assault in connection with the death of his son May 9, 2014. After several months of court hearings involving lawyers for the state and Sundblad discussing witnesses, evidence and other facets of the case, Sundblad’s trial was scheduled to begin with the selection of a 12-person jury Friday (Feb. 12). His defense lawyer, Michael McDonald of Prior Lake, has asked the court to reschedule it to April 26, when a defense expert in child victim cases will be available, said Scott County

Attorney Ron Hocevar. Tuesday (Feb. 16), lawyers for Sundblad and the state will hear Judge Christian Wilton’s ruling on a request for the delay. Hocevar expects the trial will be delayed until April. Previously, Sundblad, 25, was charged with third-degree murder, two counts of ďŹ rst-degree assault and two counts of thirddegree assault. Sundblad has continually waived his right to a speedy trial, Hocevar said.

In Jail

Sundblad has been in the Scott County Jail since September of 2014 when he was initially charged. He did not post the $50,000 cash bail then. His bail was increased to $1 million cash bail or bond set after a grand jury indicted Sundblad for ďŹ rst-degree murder in September of 2015. According to the criminal complaint, police, ďŹ reďŹ ghters and paramedics responded to a report of an unresponsive baby at a house on the 200 block of South Elk Street May 9, 2014 at approximately 5:22 p.m. Sundblad directed them to a bedroom where they found the unconscious baby and his mother, crying. They found the baby’s skin dark purple and would only

lighten in color when oxygen was administered. The child was pronounced dead that night at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital at 10:52 p.m. An autopsy by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s ofďŹ ce revealed the baby had several injuries in its head and body. Examiners found a fractured skull as well as bleeding on the brain. They also found fractures to the front and rear of four ribs. The baby’s left wrist was also fractured. The medical examiner ruled the infant’s death a homicide caused by brain injury and compromised sleeping position. The child was born in March seven weeks early. The charge states the mother reported the child was doing well and gaining weight by his one-month checkup. The new charges against Sundblad came after he allegedly admitted in June of 2015 to a fellow jailhouse inmate, Ron Plumley, he killed the infant to put the child “out of his misery.â€? McDonald said his client will be found not guilty of the charges at trial. He also questions the credibility and reliability of Plumley and his claims.

Under the watchful eye of phlebotomist Hannah Merill, Bentz completed the double red blood cell process. Double red cell donation is similar to a whole blood donation, except a special machine is used to allow the donor to donate two units of red blood cells during one donation while returning plasma and platelets to the donor’s body.

sheriff in 2006 and then reelected in 2010 and 2014. Studnicka led a push to use technology to improve efficiency and communications at the sheriff’s office. Some accomplishments during Studnicka’s tenure include upgrades to 800megahertz radios, increasing court security through the use of metal detectors, improving statistical data and reporting, and entering the world of social media. Studnicka has also been lauded for enhancing the high level of professionalism of the sheriff’s office and credited with operating the office and its multiple divisions effectively during times of financial challenge. “I’ve had my differences with Kevin, but he has done a good job running the sheriff’s department. I don’t hear too many complaints from my constituents about the sheriff’s department, Wagner said. “Kevin is well-respected around the state in the sheriff’s association. He does a good job, said Commissioner Tom Wolf of Credit River Township. A Jordan native, Hennen has been with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office since 1998. He has served as a patrol deputy (1999-2000), investigator (2001-2010) and sergeant (2010-2015). Hennen was appointed Studnicka’s chief deputy Dec. 31 of last year. He graduated from Minnesota

Tigers Top Titans, Stay in First by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School boys’ basketball team maintained its grip on first place in the Minnesota River Conference standings with a 6557 victory at Tri-City United Thursday night. It was Belle Plaine’s eighth win in a row. Whether or not the Tigers, 7-2 in the MRC, 14-7 overall, are still in first place by themselves was dependent on the outcome of Tuesday night’s game at Jordan that was played after this edition of the Herald went to press (see the Herald’s Facebook page for result). Jordan began that game tied for second place in the MRC with Norwood Young America at 6-3. After last night, Belle Plaine has just two games to play in the conference – one of those to be at Norwood Young America 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday. Before then, Belle Plaine will host Mayer Lutheran (3-7) this Friday. Tip time is scheduled for 7 p.m. rather than the usual 7:30 p.m. Postseason play is set to begin Tuesday, Feb. 23. Wagner is concerned about the impact Studnicka’s process could have on the morale of the sheriff’s office staff. He believes the county board should set up a committee to appoint the most qualified person to serve as sheriff for the remainder of Studnicka’s term. “Luke’s a nice guy. I know his parents. I don’t doubt he’s a good deputy in the sheriff’s department. But we don’t know if he’ll be a good sheriff. And if he’s not, it’ll come back at the county board, Wagner said. “Kevin shouldn’t get to handpick his successor and walk away. Wolf noted state statute 375.08 allows the county board to select anyone, although state statute says commissioners “may (not shall) choose the sheriff’s chief deputy. Wolf’s confident Hennen will try to do a good job so he’ll be in a good position, should he seek voter approval to win the job at the end of Studnicka’s current term. “Our hands are pretty well tied on this one. I have a little concern about this, but not a lot, Wolf said. “It would be a good idea to post the position. Let’s see who’s interested. I wouldn’t mind seeing who is out there.

position of the ordinance at its meeting Tuesday (Feb. 16), the New Prague Times recently reported. Speaking on their decision to oppose the proposed ordinance banning residential poultry, seasoned commission members noted many residents they had heard from, including those who attended a commission meeting Jan. 27, supported allowing chickens on residential property. Commissioner Dan Meyer noted New Prague is still a small community and prohibiting chickens would be a fowl idea. Scott West Gets No. 4 Seed

The Scott West wrestling team is seeded No. 4 for the Section 2AA Team Wrestling Tournament that begins this Thursday night. Scott West (12-5) will host either No. 5 seed New Prague (11-8) or No. 12 Mankato East (6-17) at approximately 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Jordan. New Prague and Mankato East will compete in a play-in match at 6 p.m., also at Jordan. Scott West is the favorite from that group to advance to Saturday’s semifinals and championship (final four) rounds at Hutchinson High School. That’s where the Panthers would likely meet up with No. 1 seed Waconia (14-1) in the semifinals at 4 p.m. All Waconia needs to do is win at home Thursday against either No. 8 seed WEM/JWP (7-10) or No. 9 GSL/LP (12-12) Thursday night. Waconia beat Scott West 33-21 on Jan. 28 in Mankato. The strong favorites to reach Saturday’s other semifinal match are No. 2 seed Hutchinson (17-6) and No. 3 Watertown-Mayer (14-4). Like Waconia, both those teams also defeated Scott West
