He may be at the county fair this summer, but only if he wants to be there. The county fair’s general manager has decided the time has come to put his family first and the daily grind of organizing the five best days of summer in the rear view mirror. Norm Pint announced his decision to step down from the general manager’s post last fall. He wrapped up the final details of his tenure last week. The country-style kitchen table that was a trademark of Pint’s management style has been removed from his office at the fairgrounds. Pint fancied the table because, as he said, “you can get more work done at the kitchen table.” The work done at the ‘kitchen table’ in Pint’s corner office led the Scott County Fair in 2014, ‘15 and ’16. Pint was brought in to lead the fair in Decem-

ber of 2013 and clean up some loose ends a year after longtime county fair GM Jim Luce retired. Pint isn’t leaving because of dissatisfaction with the decisions from the fair board or a better job offer. He wants to spend more time with his family. Requests from his children and grandchildren for weekend outings the past few summers have been put behind work related to preparing the fairgrounds in St. Lawrence Township for 20,000-plus guests in July. At 66, Pint says his health is good. But he wants to put his family first before Father Time catches up with him. He has relatives living at Kingsway Retirement Living in Belle Plaine. “The clock is a tickin’,” he said. “I could do this another year, but it would be another year of not doing what I want to do. You only get one chance at a family. I just needed to get away.” Pint may still help out at the fairgrounds with his wife, Lori, preparing the commercial arts

building next summer where the talents of local artists and craftsmen are displayed. But any time he spends at the fair will be of his choosing.

‘Deep Under Cover’

“I won’t be wearing the white shirt,” he said of the fair board’s uniforms. “I’ll be deep under cover.” Pint took the job in 2013 knowing the first order of business was to complete the requirements of grants before a missed deadline would have prevented the fair from applying for additional grants. The fair board and members of the Scott County Agricultural Society that run it rely on state grants to help pay for new programs fair board members hope will attract a new audience. by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine City Council is expecting more guests than usual next Monday evening (Feb. 6) as many people have vowed to make their voices heard on the subject of the recent removal of the cross from a display at Veterans Memorial Park in Belle Plaine. A “Citizens of Belle Plaine” advertisement on page 10 asks community members to attend next Monday’s council meeting, stating “our veterans defended us, and we must defend them.” “This issue will be on the agenda as requested by a local representative of the group,” said Belle Plaine Mayor Chris Meyer. “He will present for the whole group since this is not a public hearing. The city is continuing to research several issues regarding Veterans Park, both from the legal aspect as well as a policy review standpoint.” Meyer added that there will be additional information available at next Monday’s council meeting. The cross was removed by the city and Belle Plaine Veterans Club a couple of weeks ago after members of the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF), based in Wisconsin, demanded that the action be taken because the law clearly states that religious symbols are not allowed on government-owned prop-

erty. Belle Plaine City Attorney Bob Vose recommended that the cross be removed to avoid potentially costly legal action by the FFRF. The memorial the cross was a part of was made by the late-Joe Gregory, a U.S. Marine veteran. Gregory created the memorial to honor those who served and died for their country. Some of those people in attendance next Monday could be those who signed an online petition (RETURN OUR CROSS NOW) demanding that the permanent cross be returned. The petition states: Out-of-State atheists have no right to tell our town how to live and JoAnne Gill does not get to make decisions for the entire city. To avoid a recall campaign of elected members of the city, we as citizens of Belle Plaine demand the city council return our cross to Veterans Park NOW and issue a formal apology to us, your fellow citizens. As of noon Monday, the petition had mustered some 1,300 signatures. How many of those signers or others will be at next Monday’s council meeting is not known. A spokesperson from the FFRF told the Herald last week that they do not plan to have a representative at the council meeting next Monday. She said “the level of hysteria” this issue has created in Belle Plaine could create a safety issue, but that the foundation really needs

“no” representation because the Constitution of the United States is on their side - “plain and simple,” she continued. The FFRF’s complaint to the city of Belle Plaine reads: “In Veterans Memorial Park in the city of Belle Plaine, Minn., there is a display of a soldier kneeling before a Latin cross next to the Veterans Memorial Stone. This display was reportedly added to the park very recently. “We certainly have no objection to veterans’ memorials,” continued the complaint. “But it is unlawful for a city government to display patently religious symbols on city property, even to commemorate our veterans. It shows an endorsement of religion over non-religion. Additionally, the memorial sends a message that the government cares only about the death of Christian soldiers and is disdainful of the sacrifices made by non-Christian and nonreligious soldiers, since it excludes the one-third of the population that identifies as such. Please act appropriately and move the religious display off city property.” The FFRF, following a complaint in 2015 about the Belle Plaine Rotary Club’s Nativity Scene being located on police department property, was successful in that display being relocated to private property this past holiday season.

Once Land Swap Done, Grassy Area Could Replace Old Tennis Courts

If the city and Belle Plaine School District are able to successfully exchange the dilapidated tennis courts for ice rinks later this year, the old courts between the junior-senior high school and community pool will likely be replaced by a grassy area. Superintendent Ryan Laager updated the school board Monday night (Jan. 30) on plans to complete a land swap between the school district and city. The district would exchange the old tennis courts it owns at the intersection of Prairie and Market streets for the ice hockey and pleasure skating rinks the city owns at the intersection of Market and Park streets. The city council already OK’d beginning the procedural process for the land swap. Laager told the board the district wants to support whatever can be done to ensure the courts will be removed. He hopes city crews could work on removing the unusable tennis courts. The district would be willing to share in the cost of removing the courts and replacing them with a grassy area until the city decided what to do with the space, Laager told the board.

The district has no immediate plans to replace the rinks, Laager said. They could be used for activities like broomball or skating. The rink has also served as a dog park during the summer. Laager said he would have a resolution approving the district’s share of the land split after the city council OK’d its portion of the swap. BPHS One-Act Play Puts on ‘Model’ Performance, Wins Subsection Public Performance 7 P.M. This Thursday

by Dan Ruud Belle Plaine High School’s one-act play took first place at Saturday’s six-school Section 2A, Subsection 8 Festival at Jordan High School and will advance to this Saturday’s eightschool section competition at Le Sueur-Henderson High School. Other schools competing in the subsection were Jordan, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop, Le Sueur-Henderson, Sibley East and Tri-City United.

Jordan took second place and will join Belle Plaine at Saturday’s section festival, where only the top play will advance to next Friday’s (Feb. 10) Minnesota State High School League Class 1A Festival at O’Shaughnessy Auditorium on the campus of St. Catherine University in St. Paul. Other schools competing in Le Sueur Saturday will be Medford, Mankato Loyola, Maple River, Mountain Lake, St. Peter and Sleepy Eye. Doors will open at 9:30 a.m. and Belle Plaine is scheduled to go

on stage at 10 a.m. Each show lasts approximately 35 minutes. The cost is $6 for adults and $4 for students. Those costs apply regardless of how many plays you watch. This year’s BPHS play, “Radium Cure for the Broken Hearted,” is the story of a young girl who comes to a rural town in the early 1900s and finds it difficult to fit in. The school earned previous star ratings at state in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. He worked for the Minnesota Department of Public Safetyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Gambling Control Division from 1989 to 2006. Pintâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s career included 14 years (197589) with the Scott County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Office and four years (1971-75) with the New Prague Police Department. He took the job at the fair, in part, because he had spent more than enough time sitting behind a desk. He said the walk to a coffee pot at his St. Paul Department of Public Safety office was â&#x20AC;&#x153;about a half-a-mile.â&#x20AC;? At the fairgrounds, unless you had an appointment to see him, the office was one of the last places anyone would find Pint. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He was outside a lot, just making sure things are taken care of,â&#x20AC;? said Jerry Kucera, a spokesperson for the Scott County Fair Board. But donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be fooled by the resume. Pint knows the agricultural background that is the backbone of county fairs, even in emerging suburban counties. He and Lori, also a member of the fair board, still live on the Pint family farm north of Union Hill in Belle Plaine Township.

No Easy Task

Pintâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tenure as general manager will be marked by efforts to improve the Scott County Fair amidst a highly competitive suburban marketplace where entertainment options are plentiful. Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fair drew about 23,000 people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were one of the few fairs around that had decent weather,â&#x20AC;? he said. Pint will be remembered, Kucera said, as a hard-working, patient man, a good leader who led by example and appreciated the efforts of the staff and volunteers. With the help of Dick Ames, a dedicated promoter of the fair, Pint has worked to bring in a higher quality carnival operator in 2015, Gold Star Amusements. Ames acquired a refurbished Ferris wheel for the fairgrounds and also a new carousel. Pint admits Gold Star Amuse-

ments â&#x20AC;&#x153;is expensive, but he draws people. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s an investment,â&#x20AC;? he said. Pint and the staff at the county fair have worked hard to upgrade the talent performing for guests during the fairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s five-day run. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s always tried to find a balance between the cost of bands performing in the beer garden and increased sales to justify the expense. He credits an advisory committee for reinvigorating the ultra-popular demo derby and is pleased an agreement with Motokazie kept dirt bikes racing at the fair. Pint has also worked hard to keep the agricultural element of the fair front and center. With the leadership of Ken Glisczinski, Pint and the fair board created the Miracle of Birth center in the dairy barn. The birth of farm animals is witnessed and recorded, allowing people to learn about the cycle of life on the farm. The fair board has invested over $2,000 in highquality video so spectators can see the birth of farm animals on big-screen monitors. â&#x20AC;&#x153;He wanted people to be able to put together that the food on the table comes from the field,â&#x20AC;? Kucera said. Pint expects the 4H Building will be fully operational this year. Workers logged long hours on it last year. It was not quite ready for complete use. A grant from Rahr Malting helped fund the project. Pint wants to see many of the older buildings at the south end of the fairgrounds upgraded. Board members and other volunteers have logged long hours keeping the buildings in usable shape. Some of the fairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s older buildings date back to the early-1970s when the fairgrounds

were located in downtown Jordan. But Pint concedes fixing up the older buildings is easier to dream about than actually fund.

Pint has also worked to market the fairgrounds as a host for revenue-generating events like Autumn Fare, agricultural trade shows, car shows, dog shows and the MS Muck Run to name a few. Marketing the property is an ongoing challenge, he said. The demands of the county fairâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s general manager could have the fair board shifting its focus hiring Pintâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s successor. Kucera said the board might look for a person who can handle the administrative duties of running the fair and a separate person who can manage the facilities. As he wraps up the last few loose ends, Pint recalls one of the first Scott County Fairs he attended. It was when the fair was still in downtown Jordan in the early-1960s. A famous local wrestler, The Crusher, was thumping a hapless opponent. Just before he applied the final move on his opponent, a local fan shared a beer with The Crusher. As a young teen, Pint was hooked on the county fair. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was one of those things you just never forget,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Sibley East Principal Wants to Close School Campus at Lunch Citing concerns over studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; safety and nutrition, Sibley East Junior High Principal Steve Harter wants to close the high school campus during lunch hour. In a written report to the school board, Harter expressed concern over student safety during lunchtime. School Board Member Missy Weber concurred and reported recently seeing five students piling into a car during the lunch hour, the Arlington Enterprise recently reported. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gotten out of control,â&#x20AC;? Weber said.

Harter is concerned students shouldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be dining solely on soda and fast food each day. He wants students taking advantage of the nutritious meals served at the school. Harter also wants students using the homeroom/AO time used for academic work and not congregating off campus at fast-food restaurants. Harter wants the board to discuss the proposal at an upcoming meeting. Like Sibley East, Belle Plaine Schools has open campus during its daily lunch hours.

Miss Czech Slovak Contestants Sought The Miss Czech Slovak Minnesota Pageant is looking for young women of Czech, Slovak or Moravian heritage to compete for the state title. The 28th annual Miss Czech Slovak Minnesota Pageant will be held April 8 at the American Legion Club in Montgomery, Minnesota. The competition is for women between the ages of 16 and 26 years of age. Contestants Sought for Miss Pre-Teen Scott County Young girls between the ages of 9-12 years are being sought for the title of 2017 Miss PreTeen Scott County. Miss Pre-Teen Scott County will represent her county at the Miss Pre-Teen Minnesota pageant, which will be held April 29 at the Wellstone Center in St. Paul. There is no talent, fitness or swimsuit competition. The young lady chosen as Miss Pre-Teen Scott County will become an ambassador from the Scott County area and will receive an official title and sash. She will also receive a prize package and chance to represent Minnesota in hometown events, parades and state events. Master Gardeners Offer Free Classes at Area Libraries You can grow your interest in gardening with local Master Gardeners. If you have an interest in seed starting, vegetable gardening, growing herbs or perennials, making your garden eco-friendly, adding shrubs to your landscape or other gardening topics, you can learn more through a series of free gardening classes offered by the Carver-Scott Extension Master Gardeners. The classes start in February and do not require pre-registration. In Scott County, they will be held at the Prior Lake Library and the Shakopee Library. In Carver County, classes

are scheduled at the libraries in Chanhassen, Chaska, Norwood Young America and Waconia. Visit and select programs at www.carverscottmastergardeners.org. Master Gardeners are trained volunteers accredited by the University of Minnesota Extension who provide fee, unbiased horticultural and environmental best practices. You Can Now Register to Vote While Electronically Filing Taxes With income tax season opening this week, Minnesota taxpayers who need to register to vote or update their voter registration can now do so when they ďŹ le their income taxes electronically, the Minnesota Department of Revenue and Secretary of State Steve Simon announced. This year, all taxpayers using Minnesota-certiďŹ ed electronic ďŹ ling software will see a new message prompting them to register to vote online at the Minnesota Secretary of Stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s website mnvotes.org. Go-Ahead for Vets Memorial on City Land

Green Isle city councilors were more interested in allowing a veterans memorial on city owned land along Highway 5 than deciding where the project should be built. Last week (Tuesday, Jan., 24), the council gave members of the Lions Club the go-ahead to build the project on city land. The memorial will be built on a small parcel known locally as the Freudenthal property, land near the junction of highways 5 and 25 across from the UFC Convenience store. It once hosted a gasoline and service station. The city acquired it through property tax forfeiture. The land is tainted by the remnants of the use. Any development of the properly will require soil testing and possible mitigation. The memorial project is intended to start small, club members said. It will be a tribute to veterans in the various armed forces. The display will not include any large equipment, said Rose Thies, a member of the Green Isle Lions. Councilor Mark Wentzlaff promoted the memorial be built in the center of the parcel, allowing space for future expansion.

Green Isle Lions are building the project as a legacy project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Lions International. They want it completed in time for the state amateur baseball tournament this summer. Green Isle is one of the host sites of the tournament. Proceeds from the Feb. 4 dinner will help fund the project. In other action at the Jan. 24 meeting, the Green Isle City Council: â&#x20AC;˘ Paid bills totaling $89,600.98. â&#x20AC;˘ Discussed the application process for the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vacant part-time public works position. â&#x20AC;˘ Received a report from the Sibley County Sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ofďŹ ce of two businesses that failed supervised tobacco compliance checks, the Grey Fox Tavern and UFC Convenience store. â&#x20AC;˘ Discussed the demolition of a shed on the 300 block of Centre Street. The shed needed to be removed to comply with city zoning ordinance. â&#x20AC;˘ Discussed the pet licensing process and city ordinance on pet licensing with sheriffâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s deputies.

Green Isle Lions Hosting Annual Dinner Show to Build Vets Memorial The Green Isle Lions are hosting their annual dinner and comedy show Saturday, Feb. 4, at Green Isle Community School. Proceeds from the event will go towards a Lions legacy project, a memorial for veterans on city property. The eveningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s social hour begins at 6 p.m. Dinner by Chef Craigâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Catering follows at 7 p.m. The eveningâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entertainment is comic magician Jessie MofďŹ tt. Festivities include a silent

auction and awarding of door prizes. The Lions aim to build a veterans memorial on city property along Highway 5. Their hope is to have it completed this summer, before the state amateur baseball tournament. Tickets are available from Lions members or at CornerStone Bank in Green Isle. The community school is at 190 McGrann Street (Highway 25) in Green Isle.

Seminar on Assisting Area Homeless Feb. 11 Launch Ministry, a faith-based non-proďŹ t organization serving struggling young adults in Carver and Scott Counties, has announced an upcoming seminar, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Assisting Homeless and Struggling Youth,â&#x20AC;? which will take place on Saturday, Feb. 11 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Chaska Moravian Church, 115 East 4th Street, Chaska. The half-day seminar for community members who regularly come in contact with young adults (16-24 years old) will

provide methods for connecting with youth who are struggling, speciďŹ cally those who are homeless or facing the possibility of homelessness. The discussion and training will focus on the nine guiding principles, developed by Youthlink, to productively work with homeless youth and highlight local experiences and resources. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is our goal, that through this seminar we will equip members of our community

Thirty Years Ago This Week

Appreciation Plaques Former Belle Plaine Mayor Fran Schuman in January of 1987 presented appreciation plaques to retiring city councilman Orville Heitkamp (left) and Maynard Harms (right), the latter of whom served many years as chairman of the local planning and zoning commission. Former Mayor Schuman had previously received her plaque at her testimonial dinner. The Belle Plaine School Board voted to go ahead with obtaining tax anticipation certiďŹ cates in the amount of $610,000. The money from the bonds would help with cash ďŹ&#x201A;ow in the schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s budget. The Scott County Board agreed to accept a bid of $125,276 for the Scott County Minimum Security Jail Annex remodeling project. The bid was awarded to W.H. Cates Construction of Hamel. Miss Belle Plaine Lisa Nelsen was among the many royalty from communities across the state representing their town at the St. Paul Winter Carnival. Nelsen, 19, was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Nelsen of Belle Plaine. Employees of Lano Equipment in Norwood Young America were cleaning up after an arson ďŹ re on Jan. 28. Though damage estimates were from $500,000 to $750,000, Lano Equipment was still in business. The featured speaker for the Feb. 9 meeting of the Belle Plaine Parents Communication Network would be Nancy Johnson, Scott County representative for Mothers Against Drunk Driving. MADDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s slogan for 1987 was â&#x20AC;&#x153;Drunk Driving Destroys Dreams.â&#x20AC;? The Belle Plaine High School boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; basketball team defeated the Arlington-Green Isle Indians 55-46 in a home game that Friday night. The Tigers improved to 5-4 in conference play and 9-5 overall. Matt Lenz led the Tigers with 19 points, while Scott Schmidt added 10 points. The BPHS girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; basketball team lost two games to the top teams in the conference, falling to Le Sueur 52-25 and Norwood/Young America 4431. The losses dropped Belle Plaine to 3-8 in the conference and 6-9 overall. The Tiger wrestling team completed its conference schedule with a 35-23 win over Arling-

60 Years Ago (1957)

The inauguration of the Highway Post OfďŹ ce service was carried out here with considerable display. The big mail bus carried its staff of clerks and was followed by a string of autos from the Twin Cities carrying various postal ofďŹ cials. The bus and caravan made a stop of a half-hour in front of the Belle Plaine Post OfďŹ ce. Mrs. Florence B. Young, native of Belle Plaine, died at her home in Minneapolis at the age of 51. Many relatives and friends helped Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Mueller celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. Mary, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Ince, became the bride of Patrick J. Lies, son of Mr. and Mrs. M.P. Lies of Milwaukee, Wis. The country-wide brucellosis test revealed that Scott County did not qualify as a modiďŹ ed accredited brucellosis-free county. The test results showed 74 infected herds and 180 reactor cattle. For the ďŹ rst time in more years than many cared to remember, Belle Plaine High Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s cage team found its way into third place in the district standings. New Prague and Montgomery tied for ďŹ rst place with 8-1 records, with Belle Plaine in third place supporting a 6-3 showing. The residence property of the Karl Fromm estate was bought by Merwyn Roufs, who took immediate occupancy. Fred Bach of near Green Isle suffered two fractured ribs but luckily escaped more serious injury when his car rolled down

an 80-foot embankment near Blakeley. Emil Gerdes, who sold his farm near Green Isle, bought the Walter Gatz, former Clyde Bristol house, across the street from the creamery. The Baier farm home between Belle Plaine and Jordan, destroyed in a night blaze, was being rebuilt on the site of the burned structure. The site was originally that of the log cabin that was brought into Jordan years ago as a memorial to its pioneer settlers. Mrs. W.J. Gatz of Belle Plaine was named chairman of the 1957 Scott County Easter Seal Committee. In a homemaker cake contest held in Chaska, most of the entries and prize winners were from the Belle Plaine area. Runners-up were Mrs. Paul Sons and Mrs. Warren Wilson. Others from this locality who entered the contest were Mrs. Erwin Karnitz, Mrs. Gerald Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connell and Mrs. Ed Corcoran. Jack Meierbachtol bought from Loren Stier the former St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lutheran parsonage. Minnesota River League ofďŹ cers were reelected to another term with Fred Keup of Belle Plaine heading the group as president. L.O. Anthony of St. Peter was renamed vice president and Max Casey of Jordan secretary-treasurer. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Schmidt of Belle Plaine and Mr. and Mrs. Art Kerkow of Arlington returned from a 25-day California trip.

90 Years Ago (1927)

The ďŹ rst week of February brought three days of rain, which reduced the snow level mightily but left many roads difďŹ cult for driving. Members of the Gaffney family went to Savage to attend the funeral of their uncle, Tom Gaffney, age 60. Mrs. R.F. Faricy, nee Mary

Morrison, was back from Pueblo, Colo., for a visit with her brother, Michael Morrison, and her sister, Mrs. Pat Duffy. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rolf and children returned from Orange, Calif., where they spent two of the winter months. The remains of Mrs. Joanna Moriarty, 81, widow of the late Capt. John Moriarty, were brought here from Spokane, Wash., and the funeral was held from Sacred Heart Church. Interment was beside the grave of her husband, who had died 30 years earlier. The marriage of Miss Gabriella Marie Blaha, daughter of the John Blahas, to Myron H. Stone, took place at St. Peter and Paulâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Church. Mr. Stone was an employee of the Belle Plaine Motor Co. A parent-teacher organization was formed with J.A. Schoell president, Mrs. R.R. Mahler vice president and Justice Neil secretary. Belle Plaine had a town basketball team. Members were: Leo Engfer, Skip Kulisheck, Roy Hahn, Ray Grosser, Erwin and Roger Bromaghim. John J. Ahmann, who was associated with the Ahmann department store in Belle Plaine from 1919 to 1922, died in St. Cloud, to which city he returned to after leaving Belle Plaine. He served in the state senate for a number of years. Emil Karnitz leased his dray and transfer business to Bernard DeMarce and moved out onto Joe Haas Jr.â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s place. Thomas F. Kearney, a pioneer resident of Assumption, died in St. Paul where he was engaged in railroad work. Word reached St. Thomas folks of the death of James Feeney, who passed away at his home in California. The borough council was advertising for bids for concrete paving of the business section of town. Mrs. Chas. Shonka, for many years a resident of Belle Plaine Township, died at her home in Hopkins and burial took place in Jordan. Christina Kessler, 63, died at the home of her brother, William, with whom she lived many years. The funeral was held at St. Johnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Lutheran Church. The commercial club moved in on the local creameryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual meeting plans with a â&#x20AC;&#x153;Bargain Dayâ&#x20AC;? and free dance in the evening with many free prizes.

120 Years Ago (1897)

At the monthly stock fair, cows were in good demand and prices ranged from $25 to $35. Herman Schmidt of Blakeley purchased the 160-acre farm of the Michael Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Neill estate for $4,500. Mrs. Margaret Savage sold her 160-acre farm in Belle Plaine Township to Barlet and Peter Schoenecker for $5,000. Peter Arndt presented a petition to the borough council with 58 signers asking for a new ďŹ re bell. The council replied that if Mr. Arndt would collect a dollar from each of the signers the bell would be ordered.

Man Gets Jail Time for Drug Possession in B.P. School Zone A Belle Plaine man was sentenced to four days in jail and three years of probation for possession of methamphetamine in a school zone. Jose Carmen Charo was sentenced to jail time and probation after pleading guilty Jan. 11. A charge of driving with a revoked license was dismissed. According to the criminal complaint, Charo was pulled over on Cedar Street, not far from Our Lady of the Prairie Elementary School. The ofďŹ cer pulled Charo, 31, over because records indicated he was driving after revocation of his driving privileges.

Man in a Hurry Sentenced for Drug Possession A Belle Plaine man who Jordan police pulled over traveling 90 mph in a 65 mph zone on Highway 169 had more than a speeding ticket to worry about. He recently pleaded guilty in Scott County District Court to a felony count of drug possession. Bradley George Schimek pleaded guilty Jan. 9 to one count of ďŹ fth-degree drug possession and one count of third degree driving under the inďŹ&#x201A;uence. A second count of ďŹ fthdegree drug possession was dismissed. He served ďŹ ve days in the county jail and will be on probation for three years. According to police, Schimekâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s speed was recorded at 90 mph near northbound Highway 169â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s intersection with Delaware Av-

A Belle Plaine woman who wrongfully entered a relativeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house and stole prescription medication will spend the next 10 years on probation after entering a guilty plea to ďŹ rst-degree burglary last month. Augusta Catherine Zurn, 40, was sentenced to probation through Jan. 9, 2027. She must also complete a chemical treatment program. According to the criminal complaint, Zurn entered an occupied house on the 900 block of Ashford Road Sept. 27, 2016 and stole prescription medication. The criminal complaint says she took a homeownerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prescription medication Adderall.

Zurnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entrance to the house was recorded on a wireless video camera. Having noticed missing medication, the owners of the house installed the cameras to potentially record an unwelcomed intruder and thief. A member of the homeownersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; family was sleeping in the house at the time Zurn entered. According to the criminal complaint, the homeowner was uncertain if any of her sonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s medication was missing. Zurn has previous felony convictions for theft in 2012, ďŹ fthdegree drug possession in Scott and McLeod counties in 2009 and burglary in Scott County during 2007.

enue in St. Lawrence Township Nov. 1. He failed ďŹ eld sobriety tests and was arrested, the complaint states. Police found an unlabeled pill bottle on Schimek, 31. It contained generic Xanax, a controlled substance used for the treatment typically prescribed for anxiety disorders and panic attacks. Schimek admitted, the complaint states, he did not have a prescription for the drug. He admitted taking two of the pills the previous day. Schimek told police he was taking the pills to a friend, the criminal charge states. Police also found a second unlabeled pill bottle containing one Adderall pill. Schimek admitted he did not have a prescription for the drug.

The ofďŹ cer who pulled Charo over detected a strong odor of marijuana and alcohol, the complaint stated. Charo admitted smoking marijuana, the criminal complaint states, and told the ofďŹ cer to â&#x20AC;&#x153;go ahead and search.â&#x20AC;? The ofďŹ cer found a plastic bag and pen containing a small amount of a white powder in the vehicle. Charo said the contents of the bag and pen were probably old marijuana, â&#x20AC;&#x153;hopefully,â&#x20AC;? according to the criminal complaint. Tests showed the bag and pen contained small amounts of methamphetamine.

Jon and Bob Connelly went to Long Lake Conservation Center last week with the 5th and 6th graders from St. Wenc. The had a great time learning to cook a meal outside, cross country ski, and archery. The girls and Kelly enjoyed their time at home with no boys. Marv Halloran has passed his driving permit test recently, and is driving his mom’s Jeep. Give the lad a friendly honk and wave, when you meet him on the road. A friendly crowd showed up to hear Charlie Sticha’s Band at the Park Ballroom on Sunday and a fun crowd to hear Mike Feeney at The Bar in Le Sueur.

Dear Editor, I am writing this letter in complete disagreement with an article written by Dan Ruud in the January 18, 2017 Belle Plaine Herald edition. First of all, let me introduce myself. I am a 90-year-old veteran, but more important, a Christian who believes that our Savior died on the cross for me and for our country. Years ago our country was founded on the idea that we are a Christian nation. Now a handful of individuals want the religious symbols removed. I have served 14 years as a county commissioner in my county and feel that your residents have been misrepresented by your city attorney in that the closed session to dis-

cuss the issue is wrong as your public should have a chance to debate. In this article is the symbol of a soldier paying homage to his riﬂe? I feel that your administrator and City Council are very weak. Remember, Christ died on that cross for all Catholics, Protestants, Jews and those who have no church home. If we don’t stand up and express our thoughts we are at fault. Have your people tried to come up with an idea to keep this display as was? The home team Panthers would get right to work at the 106-pound weight class behind freshman lightweight Colton Bahr as he appeared to be on his way to a major decision as he used a pair of take downs and a three-point near fall to build an 8-0 third period lead over Wolverine Derek Steele. However, Steele would deny the Panthers an extra bonus point as he scored a late reversal in what became an 8-2 Bahr win. “Colton wrestled a really solid match from all positions,” states Ripley. “We like the progress he has been making this year as a wrestler and this match was a good example of that.” Scott West 113-pounder Jacob Strack has also made a lot of progress and although the sophomore would drop an 8-3 match to #2-rated Dayne Morton, he was in the fight of the battle throughout the match. Morton won the battle by scoring three take downs and a reversal. The Stauffacher brothers would turn up the pressure on the Wolverines over the next two matches as Justin scored a quick first period pin of Kevin Melgar at 120 and Jackson followed up with an 8-0 major decision over Lincoln Carpenter. “It was good to see Justin go out and be really assertive right from the start in his match,” suggests Ripley. “In addition to that it was good to see Jackson execute and score on a variety of attacks and one that was highlight worthy.” After the Wolverines’ #2-rated Tanner Pasvogel won a hardfought 7-4 decision over sophomore Tyler Shackle at 132, it would be Panther Parker Huss opening his 138-pound match against Tommy Wentzlaff with a variety of attacks as the he scored three take downs to open up a 6-2 first period lead on his way to an 11-3 major decision. It was Jeffery Kasper getting the call at 145 pounds and the Panther sophomore acquitted himself quite well as he held #4-rated Mason Voight to a 5-0 decision that included a solid third period ride out. “Although he lost the match, Jeffery did a really good job against a pretty good opponent, and to get that third period ride out should be something to build off.” The Panthers won the last

seven matches on the dual, beginning with freshman Trent Rasmussen’s solid 9-1 win over Jose Felipe at 152. Rasmussen used four take downs and some good riding to get the major decision. Rasmussen’s win was followed by Tariq Smith’s 17-9 victory over Logan Tesch at 160 pounds. After losing the opening take down, Smith took control of the action that saw him score three third period take downs to nail down the win. Scott West 170-pounder Jon Huss kept the action going as he lit up the scoreboard with six first period take downs on his way to a 22-7 second period technical fall win over Tim Lewis. Junior Tyler Buesgens continued the Panther win streak as he scored a first period pin of #4-rated Cody Voight. Although it was a first period pin, Buesgens found time to score a pair of well executed take downs before using an arm bar to power Voight to his back for the ensuing pin fall call. Scott West Improves to 13-0; Tough Competition Coming Up After beating Glencoe-Silver Lake 76-3 Thursday night in Jordan, the Scott West wrestling team was ready for a Friday night Minnesota River Conference championship dual meet, where the Panthers dominated Class Aâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s #11-rated Sibley East 51-9 at Jordan Middle School. The MRC title-clinching win improved the Panthersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; regular season dual meet record to 13-0. Scott West will have a pair of big dual meets this week. On Thursday, the Panthers will be at Augsburg College as they take on one of the top high school wrestling programs in

The Tigers, 1-7 in the MRC, 3-15 overall, were scheduled to host Jordan Tuesday night after this edition of the Herald went to press. They will host Mayer Lutheran 7:30 p.m. this Friday and travel to Mound Westonka for a 7 p.m. start next Monday. Longtime Belle Plaine High School teacher and girls’ track and field coach Rich Foust was recently selected the Minnesota State High School Class 1A girls’ track and field coach of the year. He was recognized at the Track and Field Coaches Clinic Banquet on Friday, Jan. 27 in Bloomington. “Rich has always brought a high level of professionalism to both his teaching and coaching,” said Belle Plaine High School Activities Director John Bergs. “He has always been willing to do what’s in the best interest of the district, team and students.” Student Taylor Kruger, who played for Foust in volleyball this season and is also a member of the track and field team, agrees that her coach deserves the ward. “Coach Foust has always pushed me past my limits to be the best I can be and I greatly respect him for that. He expects nothing but great things from all of his athletes and students. Two Weeks Later, Weather May Finally Allow Pond Hockey Tourney Supporters of the Belle Plaine Hockey Association have spent the last two weekends skunked by the unseasonably warm weather in their efforts to host the annual fund-raiser pond hockey tournament. They hope Saturday’s (Feb. 4) weather will be suitable. Saturday’s predicted high temperature of 27 degrees and a low of 24 should be a good blend of cold enough for the ice and warm enough for specta-

tors as tournament play begins at 11 a.m. at the rinks at the corner of South Market and West Park streets, across from Belle Plaine Junior-Senior High School. There are seven teams signed up to play. The tournament field has room for additional entries. Call Johnny Egan (952-322-0622) to enter. The tournament was originally slated for Jan. 21, but unseasonably warm weather left the

ice rink soupy. Last Saturday’s weather left the ice too soft for tournament play. Hockey association volunteers have been working this week to bring the ice on both rinks into playable shape, Egan said. Highs the rest of the week are expected to remain below freezing. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Belle Plaine Hockey Association.

A Lot of Pout: Burbot State Fish Lake Ice Fishing Record is in the Books It’s official – a Minnesota resident holds the state record for a fish species with a much maligned appearance and many names, including freshwater ling, lawyer, eelpout and burbot. Brent Getzler of Roosevelt is the new record holder of a 19pound, 10-ounce burbot taken from the Minnesota waters of Lake of the Woods. “When photos surfaced of this huge pout, it certainly got people talking,” said Mike Kurre, mentoring program coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. “As the reaction to this record shows, burbot have a certain charm despite the eely looks – and at 19 pounds, what a fish.” The fish was 33 inches long with a belly full of girth at 237/8 inches. Getzler caught it while fishing for walleyes with an orange jigging spoon tipped with a minnow on Dec. 19. “Brent, along with his bud-

Tops Nationally Ciara Fahey of Belle Plaine was recognized at last Monday night’s (Jan. 23) Belle Plaine High School girls’ basketball game for having earned the title as the Knights of Columbus International Free Throw Contest champion. Last April, Ciara, the daughter of Jodi and Jon Fahey, won the Minnesota State Knights of Columbus championship in the girls’ 10-year-old division after making 24 of 25 free throws at Cathedral High School in St. Cloud. Prior to that, she won the local contest in Montgomery and the regional contest in Norwood Young America. When her made free throws and attempts at the local, regional and state levels were compiled, Ciara was declared tops in the nation among 10-year-old girls. Scott County Deputies Now Carrying Narcan to Fight Opioid Overdoses The Scott County Sheriff’s Office has joined other agencies across the country in equipping deputies with the lifesaving antidote Naloxone to combat opioid overdoses. Scott County Sheriff’s Deputies recently received training through North Memorial Health Care on how to administer Naloxone, also known as Narcan, to patients that are suffering from an opioid overdose. All deputies working in a patrol capacity will be equipped with Narcan on a 24/7 basis, with

the antidote also being readily available at the Courthouse and County Jail. Funding to purchase the Narcan medication was provided through a $1,980 grant that was dispersed by the Metropolitan Emergency Service Board to help combat drug overdoses in the State of Minnesota. Scott County Sheriff Luke Hennen said his deputies needed Narcan “a couple of times” at calls in the townships in 2016. That’s a number he expects will grow.

“While we know that illegal drug is a crime, we also realize that opioid users are in the grip of a terrible addiction that doesn’t deserve a death penalty. We want to help people get the help they need and find a better path forward, which obviously can’t happen if they’ve fatally overdosed. This antidote gives us another way to help save lives,” Hennen said. “And by doing so, we keep hope alive that users can break free of addiction.”

Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office Joins Drug Task Force Having heard the positive results the Cannon River Drug and Violent Offender Task Force has enjoyed, Le Sueur County Sheriff Dave Tietz accepted a request to bring the group’s efforts to the county. Le Sueur County commissioners recently OK’d participation in the task force, the Le Sueur News-Herald recently reported. Once other municipalities in the county agree to the initiative, the county will become part of

Katelyn Eckblad and Ryan Hauser can’t wait to jump into freezing water Saturday afternoon in St. Peter. They will be among the hundreds of participants in the annual Polar Plunge. The fund-raiser sponsored by law enforcement, raises money for Special Olympics Minnesota. Eckblad and Hauser are members of the Wizardz (7 Up, 7 Down), a team of Polar Plungers supporting The Wizardz. The Belle Plaine-based Wizardz are a Special Olympics team that serves special athletes from Belle Plaine, Jordan and portions of eastern Sibley and northern Le Sueur counties. Saturday (Feb. 4, 1 p.m.), the members of the plunging Wizardz will be in St. Peter at Hallet’s Pond for the annual plunge event. Their team aims to raise just under $5,000. As of Monday evening, they had pledges totaling almost $3,700. So why would anyone jump into an ice-covered pond? “I plunge to bring attention to Special Olympics,” Hauger said. “I’m loud and wear colorful costumes and have a blast.” Eckblad participates in the plunge to help the Wizardz special athletes. The money raised helps defray the cost of participating in Special Olympics. “I plunge because being a part of something greater than yourself,” she said. “Even if it is for one day a year, it means so much more to me than I could explain. I also make the plunge for my family. I have family members who participate in the organization and also some amazing underclassmen from my high school who participated. It is one way that allows me to give back at least once a year and I truly love every second of it.” Deb Wirt, an employee at The Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine talked Hauger into taking the

plunge. Eckblad credits her uncle, Darrin Wolters, with talking her into joining the plunge team. Both Wirt and Wolters are members of the Wizardz plunging team. “When he would talk about it, I would always say how fun it looked and that I wanted to do it,” Eckblad said. “Finally, he had me convinced. Now I just can’t stop. I love it.” Hauger said knowing he’s helping Special Olympians have the opportunity to compete makes any discomfort worthwhile. “When you are at the event, you see the smiles on the faces

of the athletes and their families. That alone makes the cold water seem like nothing,” he said. Eckblad said participating in the Polar Plunge “is truly heartwarming and just beyond what words could explain how it feels to jump in and go bolting back out of the water knowing, I raised the money to be a part of this. the task force and collectively join efforts to thwart illegal drug use and violent crime in the county. Membership in the task force could qualify the group for additional state aid dedicated toward fighting the sale and use of illegal drugs. A year ago, the task force received about $30,000 in state aid. With the addition of Le Sueur County, that number could expand to $90,000.

Le Sueur will put about $8,850 into task force operations, money that will also come from the county’s cities. Faribault, Northfield, Dundas and Rice County are contributing about $4,450 to the task force. Le Sueur County will also dedicate one full-time deputy to work on drug investigations, Tietz said. The commitment of staff will create more officers dedicated to drug investigations, he said.

Sibley County Faces Pushback Over Vote to Stop Recording Meetings After deciding to cease the recording of regular board meetings, Sibley County commissioners have received some pushback, starting with the cable commission. The cable commission sent Commissioner Bobbie Harder of Henderson Township an email stating it had offered to broadcast the recorded meetings, an offer Commissioner Bill Pinske of Arlington had reportedly accepted, the Arlington Enterprise recently reported. Commissioner Gary Kruggel of Winthrop, the board’s chairman, said the commission

has not provided the county a schedule of when the meetings will be replayed. The commission has not picked up the recordings in three years, said County Administrator Roxy Traxler. The county board justified the decision to stop recording public meetings because is not legally required to record them. Commissioners also received objections over the decision from a Faxon Township resident who asked about transparency and other services the county is not required to provide yet does.

Harder said she had no problem with the practice of recording meetings and that she believes in transparency, yet she voted to stop the recordings. Sibley County provides many services it is not legally required to provide, like funding for libraries, parks and the Sibley County Fair to name a few.
