More Questions Than Answers

The exact background of the bell brings more questions than answers. Some of the former teachers and district employees who are still around are a bit fuzzy when it comes to exact dates surrounding the bell. Ollie Heitkamp and Dick Peterson, former teachers who arrived in the late-1950s and early-1960s, respectively, said the bell was not atop the building when they started teaching in Belle Plaine. Dave Harms said his father, Maynard, acquired the bell from a former colleague, Fran Richards. He was the district’s former band director from the 1950s through the mid-1970s. He kept the bell at a family house on Lake Minnetonka. Richards lived in a boarding house near the school, Peterson said, until the roads from the lake to Belle Plaine became more suitable for the daily commute.

In 1970, voters OK’d a $425,000 bond to demolish the 1897 building and build an addition on to the 1929 building. But by 1970, the bell was long gone, though nobody seems to remember exactly when it, as the saying goes, left the building. The current district staff is curious to know how Richards came to possess the bell. David Harms said the bell made its way from Lake Minnetonka to the Harms family’s back yard shortly after Richards’ passing in the late-1970s. “Each year, dad and some of the other teachers would go up there and visit,” Harms said. The bell was part of a wish well display that Harms copied in his back yard. “My sister (Laura) and I would throw coins in it.” He recalled students sneaking into the family’s backyard and ringing the bell long after dark. While the elder Harms didn’t mind the prank, it sent his children scurrying to the windows hoping to catch a glimpse of the perpetrators. “Eventually, he took the clapper out of it,” David Harms said. The bell was returned to the district with the clapper. When Enid Harms passed away in 1996 and Maynard died in 2008, the children realized what to do with the bell had never been discussed. David and Laura didn’t want to sell the bell. “It’s a piece of history,” he said. “It was never about getting a few bucks for it. We wanted it to stay in town.”

Dayton Appoints Lakeville’s Vandelist to District Court Bench Gov. Mark Dayton recently appointed a Lakeville attorney, Mark Vandelist, to a First Judicial District judgeship. Vandelist will be chambered at the Le Sueur County Courthouse in Le Center. He is an attorney and partner in the firm of Vandelist & Vandelist. Vandelist earned a bachelor’s degree from American University in Washington, D.C. and his law degree from Hamline University School of Law in St. Paul. A certified civil trial specialist, Vandelist serves as an arbiter with the American

Arbitration Association. He handled mainly personal injury cases and criminal litigation. Vandelist’s resume includes service as a trial attorney at Heuer & Vandelist P.A., and Cousineau McGuire Chartered. He also services as a volunteer coach for Lakeville North High School mock trial team. Vandelist replaces Judge Edward Lynch. He retired earlier this year. Minnesota’s First Judicial District includes Scott, Carver, Sibley, Le Sueur, Dakota, Goodhue, and McLeod counties.

Today, January 1st is the birth anniversary of Jerome David (J.D.) Salinger. J.D. Salinger was born in 1919. He wrote a number of short stories for various magazines and released his famous novel, “The Catcher In the Rye”, in 1951. It is regarded as one of the greatest books of the 20th century. It turned out to be his only novel. Two years after releasing the novel and dealing with new found fame, Mr. Salinger went into seclusion in New Hampshire and stayed out of the public eye until his death on January 27, 2010. The story centers on Holden Caufield and his thinking and actions as he sorts out growing up through his teen years. The acceptance of “The Catcher In the Rye” has been quite mixed. In many schools, it was required reading in literature classes. In other schools, it was banned. In the year 1981, this novel had the distinction of being the most censored book and at the same time, the second most used novel in the United States public school system. Many libraries refused to carry the book because in those days, the language in the book was considered to be too vulgar. To this day, as many as a quarter million copies of the book sell world-wide each year and over 65 million copies of the book have been printed. We do carry a biography, several compilations of his short stories, some books containing analysis of his writing, and his famous novel. Belle Plaine OK’d for ‘Readiness’ Program Wrapping up the year’s business just before Christmas, the Belle Plaine School Board OK’d a property tax levy that will achieve directors’ targeted increase of 3 percent in 2014. The school board unanimously approved a 2014 levy of $4,582,366.48. The approved amount is a reduction from the district’s preliminary levy of $4,641,256.50 – an amount that would have increased the levy by almost 4 percent. The approved 3 percent increase will raise the school district’s share of property taxes by $41 on a residential property with a taxable valuation of $150,000, said Chuck Keller, the district’s business manager. The district was able to trim the growth of its levy by 1 percent by reducing the amount it levies for funds it controls -- debt service, safe schools and unemployment. Many of the other funds funded by the district’s overall property tax levy are controlled by formulas set by the legislature. The formula for those funds prevented the board from reducing the amount levied in those areas. The safe schools fund contains money used for safety-related projects, like cameras and building security. Debt service is money the district uses to repay bonded debt. Unemployment is money the district uses to repay a successful unemployment claim. “We’re not against safe schools,” Smith said. “We can backfill those funds later.” The amount the district will levy locally is a blend of numbers based on state formulas and local decisions. But approximately three-fourths of the district’s overall $18 million still comes from the state in the

form of per-student aid.

Ramp Up Grant OK’d

Smith announced during the Dec. 23 meeting, the board’s last of 2013, the district had been selected to receive the Ramp Up to Readiness grant. All that’s left to be determined is whether the program is implemented next year during the 2014-15 school year or the following school year. That decision will be made this winter or early spring. “We hope we’re selected for next year. We feel this is a good program and we’d like to get started,” Smith said. The intent of the program is to help students be better prepared for what they want to do after graduating from BPHS. History shows most might want to attend a four-year college or university. Others enroll at a twoyear college, attend a technical college, enlist in the military or enter the workforce. Ramp Up to Readiness is designed to help each students select the classes available to them that best prepare the student for their respective goals. By reducing the length of a class period by a few minutes through a selected school day – most likely a Tuesday or Thursday – teachers and district staff can meet with students during an additional period at the end of the day to help the students prepare for their selected path. The additional period will not extend the school day since it uses time taken from other hours during a given day, Smith said. A student intent on attending a four-year university will work with teachers and staff to select and be prepared for challenging classes geared toward college enrollment. A student intent on entering the workforce or military service can select classes that will complement their vocational interests, he said. The curriculum is available to the Belle Plaine School Dis-

trict at no cost for the first two years thanks to a federal grant to the U of M. After that, it can be reproduced and continuously used until the school feels it needs to be updated. Dave Kreft, Belle Plaine JuniorSenior High School principal, said the Ramp Up to Readiness curriculum is currently worth between $1,500 and $2,000. In other action at the Dec. 23 meeting, the Belle Plaine School Board: • Paid bills totaling $828,881.77. • Approve the hiring of Marcy Boblitt as an early childhood special education teacher for the remaining 100 days of the school year for $20,843.68. • Approve a Jordan eighthgrader attending Belle Plaine schools Dec. 9, 2013. • Approve two Belle Plaine fifth- and ninth-graders enrolling in Le Sueur-Henderson schools. • Approve a Belle Plaine kindergartner attending Jordan schools effective Sept. 3, 2014. • Accepted the formal audit of the district’s financial statements for the 2012-13 fiscal year. Smith said the audit confirms the Belle Plaine School District’s stable financial condition and our comparative operations costs to districts its size. • Approved a motion to bring student activity accounts under school board control effective July 1, 2014 rather than control of individual groups of clubs. The organizational meeting of the Belle Plaine City Council was held Jan. 3 with Mayor Fran Schuman making a number of appointments. Among them was Orville Heitkamp being named acting mayor when Schuman is absent. The law firm of Krass, Meyer and Kanning was hired for another year as the cityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s legal firm. City Administrator Dave Unmacht stated that he had already received 15 resumes for the position of police chief. He added that he was expecting between 50 and 100 applications for the job. Police Chief Rod Peddycoart was resigning over a salary dispute. The Scott County Board of Commissioners appointed Second District Commissioner Tony Worm as its 1984 chairman, replacing First District Commissioner William Koniarski. Worm had been a member of the county board for 21 years. Dick Mertz of Shakopee was named vice chairman. The Scott County Board of Commissioners would again consider a specific racetrack site endorsement even though a similar attempt had died at the request of Shakopee developers. The decision to again reconsider the site endorsement followed a request that Tuesday by Metropolitan Council District Representative Ray Joachim. In his comments to the board, Joachim said the Shakopee site rated high marks in all categories of concern by the Met Council. Belle Plaine stores were starting the new year in 1984 by reducing their Friday night hours. They would close at 8 p.m. instead of the customary 9 p.m. Most store owners agreed that over the years there became less and less traffic after 8 p.m. The fact that the bank closed at 8 p.m. and the high school sports began about then were believed to be two contributing factors. The new year brought relief to the record cold of late December. Just 10 days after shivering through a record piercing cold snap, area residents felt the mercury soar above freezing for the first time in a month. The temperature reached 42 degrees here on Jan. 3, melting much of the snow.

The Belle Plaine High School boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; basketball team stayed active during the holiday period by placing third at a tournament in Gaylord. The Tigers were beaten by eventual tournament champion Nicollet 73-59 in the first game before fighting off a scrappy team from Belview 51-48 in the battle for third place. Against Nicollet, the Tigers were led by Bill Fogartyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 17 points, followed closely by Kevin Wolpern with 16 and Jeff Fogarty 10. The high scorers against Belview were Kevin Wolpern (16), Jeff Miller (13) and Bill Fogarty (10).

60 Years Ago (1954)

At the annual meeting of the MinValley Milk Cooperative, the noted George Grimm was the guest speaker. The event commemorated the completion of 10 years of operation of MinValley. In 1953, the plant processed over 150,000,000 pounds of milk, or an average of 410,000 pounds per day. Local firemen responded to a call at the George Hespenheide farm. It was a burning chimney and the blaze was extinguished without damage to the house. Edna Clara Stier, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Stier, died suddenly at the hospital in Rochester. She was 44 years old. The installation of Rev. Roland Gurgel as the new pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church of Belle Plaine was carried out at impressive services. Rev. L.F. Brandes of Jordan was the installing officer. Rough Aslar Lodge No. 177 A.F. & A.M. of Belle Plaine held installation of officers. The most striking thing about the ushering in of the new year in this locality was the 36-degree midnight temperature. The unusually mild weather and excellent roads brought a big crowd to town. Rev. P.J. Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connor, for many years pastor at Graceville, was named to the pastorate of Sacred Heart parish, Belle Plaine. Rev. Gordon MyCue, who had been acting pastor here since the death of Father Finley, went to St. Vincentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s parish, St. Paul. Word came from St. Paul of the death of Mrs. Rose Ashe. Mrs. Ashe was better remembered here as Rose Griffin, who was born and raised in the St. Thomas community. At the regular P.T.A. meeting, Bernard Casserly, reporter for the Minneapolis Star, served as moderator on a panel of young people attending Belle Plaine High School to discuss some of the problems of youth. Two Norwood youths, Robert Bailey and Orland Feltmann, were injured in a car-truck collision north of Shakopee. Bailey had shoulder and back injuries, and Feltmann had only minor bruises.

It was good weather for making ice. The mercury dropped to 30 below zero. Julius Seiberlich, who had been in the furniture and undertaking business at Stillwater, moved here, buying the stock of Henry Becker. Harry F. Weis, former cashier of the State Bank of Belle Plaine, bought the building and fixtures of the defunct bank at Le Sueur and opened a bank there. Edward Halloran completed a barn on his St. Thomas farm and it was considered unusually large, 60 by 80 with a wing 20 by 40. John McDevitt of Belle Plaine and his cousin John McDevitt of St. Paul bought out the furniture stock and undertaking equipment of James Sheehan and opened for business in the Sheehan building.

Judge Denies Cilibertoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Request Scott County Pay Attorneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Fees

A district court judge has rejected Scott County Attorney Pat Cilibertoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request the county be ordered to pay his attorneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fees in the lawsuit over his 2013 salary. Judge Kevin Mark declined the request the court order Scott County pay Cilibertoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attorney, John Fabianâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s fee of $6,521.63. Ciliberto did win a raise through his appeal of the county boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision to set his 2013 at $138,432 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; an 8 percent increase from 2012. In his request the county be ordered to pay legal fees, Fabian cited previous cases from other counties in Minnesota where the set by elected county boards were appealed to the court, citing arbitrary and capricious actions by county commissioners. Fabian also argued Ciliberto was acting in his official capacity as county attorney when he exercised his right to appeal his salary as granted by state law. He also argued that the case and its decision would also benefit the county in the future, and thus, the fees should be recoverable. But Mark, in rejecting the request, noted Cilibertoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s appeal was not for his departmental budget, but rather his own salary. He noted, â&#x20AC;&#x153;the court is without the authority to grantâ&#x20AC;? Cilibertoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s request. Three years ago, when Ciliberto appealed a board decision

on his salary and the salaries of his top assistant county attorneys as part of the departmental budget, Scott County District Court Judge William Macklin, ordered the county pay attorney fees in excess of $13,000. Fabian also argued the fees should be granted because the Scott County Board acted in bad faith during settlement negotiations. In April, County Board Chairman, Commissioner Tom Wolf of Credit River Township, approved an additional 5 percent to the 3 percent increase to $131,840 the board OKâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d in December of 2012. The additional 5 percent was withdrawn, Fabian argued, â&#x20AC;&#x153;because a commissioner who has previously consented to the settlement was getting cold feet and the parties no longer had an agreement.â&#x20AC;? But in rejecting the argument, Mark ruled there was no evidence in the record to prove the county board â&#x20AC;&#x153;acted vexatiously or wantonly or for oppressive reasons.â&#x20AC;? Markâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decision comes just after the commissioners set the county attorneyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2014 at $145,345. The 4 percent hike is part of a coordinated effort to move the salaries of county elected officials â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the sheriff, county attorney and commissioners â&#x20AC;&#x201C; toward the average of suburban metro area counties.

Chris Schmitt was back from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, where he was in the lumber business ever since leaving Belle Plaine. The bus company was using plows attached to the rear of the busses to keep the snow from piling up in the middle of the road. Mrs. Jacob Barten died at her home in Carlos and her remains were brought to her old home at Union Hill for church services and burial. The Belle Plaine Commercial Club and the farm clubs of Belle Plaine, St. Lawrence and Blakeley townships held a joint get-together at Columbus Hall, where a program of entertainment was carried out. After the borough council had passed a milk ordinance and named Dr. Bromaghim as supervisor, 31 persons made written applications for licenses to distribute milk. James Corcoran, a resident of San Francisco Township since 1859, died in his 95th year on the farm on which he had lived for 65 years. Born in Kings County, Ireland, in 1825, he came to this country in his youth, married in Pennsylvania in 1852, and shortly after pioneered in Minnesota. A delegation of more than 30, many of whom were from east Belle Plaine Township, invaded the county commissioners meeting to petition for improvement of the town line road south from Jordan. The bank statements of the two local banks showed combined deposits of $700,000. The Sibley County Jail at Gaylord was filled to capacity, all 17 boarders being there for violation of the prohibition law.

(5) City Administrator Let Go – As of about 7:30 p.m. Aug. 19, City Administrator David Murphy was no longer employed by the city of Belle Plaine. During a closed session, the city council voted to part ways with Murphy, effective immediately. During a closed session in June, the council came to a consensus not to renew Murphy’s contract when it expires on Dec. 31. January would have marked Murphy’s 10-year anniversary as the city administrator. Mayor Mike Pingalore did not go into any details as to why Murphy was let go before his contract expires on Dec. 31, only that the action will enable the city “to move quickly in a more progressive, efficient and effective manner.” Finance Director Dawn Meyer was appointed interim city administrator until a replacement for Murphy is hired. In his separation agreement with the city, Murphy would receive four months salary and health insurance (through Dec. 31), as well as accrued vacation and sick leave. Murphy’s salary at the time of his departure was $98,485. The council interviewed three finalists for Murphy’s replacement in the fall but did not hire either of them, instead opting to further review a new job description for the position. (6) OLP Expansion – Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church and School in Belle Plaine held a ground-breaking for its new parish life center on Aug. 4. OLP is constructing an 11,335square-foot addition on the southeast side of the existing church. The addition will be used as a gathering space, more offices and six classrooms. The existing school building, one of Belle Plaine’s oldest structures, will be demolished after completion of the new building. The estimated total cost of the project is $1.8 million, much of which was raised by various fund-raisers by the church and its members. Plans are to complete construction this spring. (7) Street Improvement Project – The Belle Plaine City Council awarded the bids for the 2013 street and utility improvement project to Chard Tiling at the low bid of $1,304,218, which was $196,000 (13 percent) below the city engineer’s estimate of $1,500,000 for construction costs. The project would consist of West Main Street between Willow Street and Buffalo Street, Eagle Street between Park Street and Main Street and the 100 block of North Buffalo Street. In May, the council agreed to add nearly $14,000 to the cost of the overall project to help ease parking concerns at the municipal swimming pool. Angle parking would be constructed at South Willow Street adjacent to the pool. (8) Business Additions/Changes – Belle Plaine’s newest business addition opened Aug. 1 in the extensively remodeled former office and warehouse area adjacent to the Belle Plaine Country Store at 820 East Main Street. The name of the complex changed from Belle Plaine Country Store to Genesis Town and Country, which includes the Hardware Hank brand and image. Genesis General Manager Joe Spinler said the total amount of retail space was expected to more than double – from 5,000 square feet to approximately 12,000 square feet. Another notable business addition in Belle Plaine included Main Street Donut and Deli in the former Duets building downtown, which the owners of Broadway Market in downtown Jordan, Tim and Linda Heng, purchased from Mary and Rick Krant. Also, Legacy opened at 106 North Meridian Street downtown. Legacy offers a variety of health shakes and other wellness foods and programs. The business opened under the ownership of Jessica Schrupp, Jeff Miller, Janeen Meyer, Lainey and Jeremy Schwartz. The motel on Highway 169 in Belle Plaine, most recently FairBridge Inn and Suites and before that AmericInn, was purchased by Neil and Tina Bhakta of Eden Prairie. The Bhaktas changed the name to HomeTown Inn and Suites, which they independently own and operate. (9) Oh the Weather Outside – The weather of 2013 played havoc on a lot of lives, ranging from farmers and gardeners to high school spring sports participants. The cloudy, wet and cool weather in March and April did not make it feel much like spring in Minnesota, but the slushy snow and rain in those months did a lot to help reduce the drought conditions that had persisted since fall of 2012.According to the county rain gauge on the Ewald and Adella Gruetzmacher farm in Belle Plaine, 12.75 inches of snow/rain fell in Belle Plaine the first half of April alone. That was on top of the 12.50 inches of snow in March. Meanwhile, Belle Plaine’s spring sports teams were getting benched by Mother Nature for the better part of a month. In fact, the BPHS baseball team had already played 10 games by April 24 of the 2012 season. But on the same date in 2013, the Tigers had yet to play a game. The snow and chills of this past spring also played havoc on the golf, softball and track and field schedules. The Minnesota River Conference eventually decided to play all of its conference baseball and softball games as doubleheaders to help make up for lost time. In late summer, some crops were deteriorating as one of the most extensive late-summer heat waves in Minnesota history raged on. The Aug. 25 high of 96 degrees in the Twin Cities broke the 94-degree record set for that date in 1948. On Aug. 22, the mercury soared to 97 degrees, also breaking the previous record of 94 degrees for that date set in 1948. The heat had persisted for nearly a week and no end was expected until at least next Labor Day. The heat and lack of rain was sending the price of corn and soybeans upward as less supply creates a bigger demand. (10) Accomplishments at State – The Belle Plaine town baseball team ran out of steam (and pitchers) on Labor Day after logging 26 innings the day before, dropping the Class ‘C’ state championship game to Sartell by a 10-0 count in seven innings. The whirlwind Labor Day Weekend (games were played in Delano and Maple Lake) began with a 6-3 victory over Avon. Then on Sunday, the Region 6C champion Tigers won a pair of contests, outlasting Howard Lake 7-6 in 17 innings and Winsted 8-4 in the state semifinals. Against Sartell, the Tigers had their 10game winning streak snapped to cap the season at 19-17, including 9-4 in the RVL. A couple of months after the town Tigers’ surprising postseason run, the BPHS volleyball team was competing in the state volleyball tournament. The tourney started off disappointingly for No. 4 seed Belle Plaine as it dropped a hard-fought five-setter to first-time state entrant and No. 5 seed Fergus Falls at Xcel Energy Center. Although any hope the Tigers had of winning a state Class 2A title was washed away with the loss, they did end up of leaving St. Paul two days later packing a trophy and feeling pretty good about themselves following victories over Mora and Dassel-Cokato en route to winning the consolation (fifth place) trophy. The BPHS one-act play group put the finishing touches on another stellar year by capturing the school’s sixth “starred” performance rating in seven years and 10th in the last 20 years at the Minnesota State High School League One-Act Play Festival Feb. 8 in St. Paul. A total of 208 schools from Class 1A competed in one-act play in 2013. Last but not least, Belle Plaine bowler Sharon Carlson set a state record for a woman’s three-game series (867), which included her third career perfect game. She accomplished the feat May 5 at Mermaid Lanes in Mounds View.

pumping and navigation. “Over his years on the department, this member has served as an officer on the command side as a lieutenant. He has also served on the administrative side as treasurer,” Otto continued. Benck is the son of Earl and Bev Benck, who live in Vernon City. He said they thought he “was crazy” to join the National Guard following high school and then in later years to also become a volunteer firefighter. Being a firefighter has had its ups and downs for Benck. Although most calls are routine, there are those, especially fatal traffic accidents, that scar the mind. The latest for Benck occurred two months ago on Highway 169 near Blakeley Trail, where 8-year-old Laura Maloney of Pine City was killed after the pickup she was riding in rear-ended a car, rolled into a ditch and was smashed by a horse trailer the pickup was pulling. Benck was also at the scene of one of the worst crashes in Belle Plaine history. It occurred a number of years ago during the New Year holiday period on Highway 169 in Belle Plaine. Four people were killed in the fiery crash that was caused by a wrong-way driver. Benck, an avid fisherman, has a trailer at Lake Winnibigoshish in north central Minnesota. “That’s my getaway,” said Benck, whose two grown sons – Jason and Josh – work for Anderson’s Family Resorts in nearby Walker on Leech Lake, another one of Minnesota’s most popular fishing lakes.

Benck, who is the only member of his family to ever become a firefighter, is the 36th recipient of the Belle Plaine Firefighter of the Year Award, an honor that has been a BPFD tradition since 1980. The award was presented to two firefighters in both 1990 and 1992, and to all who responded to the Oct. 19, 2005 blaze that destroyed the former professional building downtown.

St. Thomas Mass is scheduled at St. Thomas Sunday, December 29 at 9 a.m. with Father James Burns. Masses are scheduled at St. Anne’s Church in Le Sueur at 5:15 p.m. Saturday and 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday. Christmas Day Mass was celebrated again this year in St. Thomas as Father James Burns officiated, and Marvin Halloran, Carlie and Mason Simon served Father at the altar. Over 150 attended. Brett Simon read the Liturgy, Kevin Halloran and Jim Connelly took up the collection, and James and Andy Oak took up the Gifts. Jim Oak and Jim Walker were Eucharistic Ministers, and Jessie Retka, home from Utah, accompanied the St. Thomas Choir. Kevin Hebert accompanied Father and his dad on slick roads to from the cities to St. Thomas. Many St. Thomas families came home for Christmas and listened to Father’s enlightening sermon on the power of a baby at Christmas and received ‘celestial’ chocolates upon leaving the church after mass. We appreciate Father Burns and Father Hessian, also to Father Grafsky for his generous blessings. We love gathering for Mass at St. Thomas. It’s truly a wonderful gift to be able to attend mass here. When inquired after Christmas Mass where he would be spending the rest of the day John Burns, Father’s dad, sounded much like many other dads around here. He smiled modestly and said “I’m allowing my family to invade my home for the day.” Among the many family homes invaded for a bit during these holidays were Doc and Rita O’Connell who hosted a few Reaks/Megers, Gus couldn’t make it, must have been watching the game on his big TV. The whole O’Connell clan gathered at the Mike and Paula O’Connell home. Tilley Sullivan and Tony Hartman hosted members of the Leo and Meg Sullivan clan. Kevin and Beth Halloran had their branch of Hallorans in. Jim and Mary

Jean Halloran enjoyed their family and Mary’s sister Judy, Bruce and Colleen Budin hosted the Connellys, Retkas gathered at Chuck and Marie’s. Bradley Boren hosted the O’Briens. At an earlier gathering, Lynn Retka Stenzel, Kelly Holden, Julie Retka, David Byrne, Renee Retka and Brie Leigh gathered for a great night at the Cedar Cultural Center on December 21. They enjoyed listening to Nona and the Anonymous Choir. Following the performance they gathered at Longfellow Grill. Nona and the Anonymous Choir performed cover songs from Neil Young’s “After the Gold Rush” album. Nona is the daughter of Renee Retka, and Jerry and Catherine’s granddaughter. There’s a St Thomas connection at the Mayo Health Clinic in Le Sueur. Bethany Fixsen, a medical student and granddaughter of Ellie Boisen Depuydt, is “shadowing” Dr Halloran. Our grandchildren are still here, wrestling, screaming and laughing around me, the little darlings. Daycare is closed. This writer will be grandkidsitting our five younger ones, Andy, Katelyn, Tyler, Anna and Maddie, 4 thru 6 years old on this New Years’ Eve. Games, sledding, a movie and fireworks are planned. The wrestling, yelling and horseplay are unplanned, but expected, which brings my Grandma Burns’s most used phase to mind, “God help us all!”

Winter Texans to Meet Jan. 27 Winter Texans from Belle Plaine, New Prague, Jordan and the surrounding areas will hold their annual luncheon Monday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. at Harold’s Country Kitchen. BPHS Senior Clausen No Devil on Stage for Her First Opera There’s no hip-hop on her iPod, no heavy metal music or rap. You want show tunes? Mikhayla Clausen’s got lots of them at the ready. Put her on a stage in a musical and the Belle Plaine High School senior is in her element. Clausen’s done most everything she can do in high school theater here. She knows it’s time to look for new challenges. The daughter of Vicki and James Boruff, Clausen will perform in her first opera this month. She earned a minor female lead part in Minnesota Opera Project Opera’s presentation of “Griffelkin” Jan. 1012 at The Lab Theater in Minneapolis. Clausen plays the role of a letterbox in the opera, one of about 80 characters in the opera but one of the few females with singing parts. She performs in the second act and the first scene of the third act. While Clausen’s costume may not meet the stereotype of an opera, she will be singing in English. “No, I won’t be wearing a Viking helmet and wig,” Clausen said. “It’s a good part because almost everybody else is a devil.” It’s a far cry from the first opera she saw. Last fall, she and her mother visited Boston. They saw, “La Traviata,” an Italian opera with subtitles. “It was absolutely amazing,” Clausen said. “I fell in love with it.” As “Griffelkin’s” opening nears, she’s a bit nervous because there’s been precious little time for rehearsal with an accompanist. Clausen’s confidant her experience and ability will have her ready to go. She’s been in several one-act plays and school plays at Belle Plaine Junior-Senior High School and is more than capable of handling the acting, said Allie Jacobson, one of the directors of Belle Plaine’s fall musicals where Clausen has always exceeded expectations. “She’s talented enough to do it. This (opera) is something she’s always been interested in. Now it’s time for her to look further,” Jacobson said. “Someone with her talents, it’s great she’s pursuing it.” “Griffelkin” is the story of a young devil who travels to Earth to perform one bad deed for his 10th birthday. While wreaking havoc, he meets a young boy and girl mourning their mother’s death. Griffelkin is compassionate toward the children and brings

Clausen had to audition for a part in “Griffelkin.” Project Opera, a program for children ages 8-18 run by Minnesota Opera. Music Director Dale Kruse and Stage Director Daniel Ellis expect the young actors and singers to be on their toes. The fall auditions was way out of her comfort zone, intense with no guarantees, regardless of their resumes. Students competing for a spot in Project Opera were expected to dress properly for auditions. It’s a far cry from the laidback blue jeans and T-shirts atmosphere in Belle Plaine. “Here, they know what I can do (the directors in Belle Plaine),” Clausen said. “Your entire opera lies in that one audition. I had to get all dolled up and do my best and my best might not be good enough.” Kruse and Ellis cut the performers, especially the older students, little slack for being off the mark. Clausen said the professional directors treat the students as professionals and expect them to act accordingly. Rehearsals run for three hours during weekends with the work keenly focused on being ready for a live audience of patrons the cast is not related to and higher expectations than for a high school play. “This is her next step. She’s ready for the push. She’s ready for the critique,” Jacobson said. “Mikhayla doesn’t get that here because she does what we need her to do.”

Mikhayla Clausen She’s also known as a team player. Clausen has never been cast in the lead female role in Belle Plaine. Her junior year, Jacobson cast Clausen as Mrs. Paroo in the “Music Man” because she was best able to handle the singing, a soprano with an Irish brogue. She has also worked behind the scenes as a teacher’s assistant in English and music classes. She also works with younger choir students, helping them develop their ability and confidence. Musically, Clausen’s BPHS choir teacher, Cheryl Gorton, the choir director at Belle Plaine Junior-Senior High School, is also certain her student can handle the demands of opera. Like Jacobson, she’s planning to attend the opera to see Clausen perform. “I’ve already bought my ticket,” Gorton said. Clausen sings in the high soprano range and has the ability to handle vibrato, the fluttering of her voice. Gorton took note of the maturity in Clausen’s voice when she was just an eighth-grader. Clausen earned a spot on the state honors choir as a sophomore. As a junior, she earned a superior rating and was named best at site in the section choir competition. Clausen’s ability allowed her to sing a solo when the choir performed at Mall of America before Christmas. “She knew early on she had an ear for a different sound and the desire to use it,” Gorton said. “She’s just flourished the past couple of years.” Clausen is hoping her performance in “Griffelkin” is the first of many operas. After graduation, she plans to study music at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Shakopee Moratorium Snuffs Out Hookah Lounges, Shisha Bars

Scott County Libraries Offer Adult Winter Reading Program

If you’re interested in one day soon firing up a hookah pipe at a lounge in Shakopee, you’ll have to wait at least six months until the end of a city-OK’d moratorium on the approval of the establishments. The city has received inquiries from people potentially interested in opening a hookah lounge or shisha bar – businesses that offer multiple patrons the opportunity to concurrently smoke tobacco via hose-fed hookahs pipes. But the city isn’t quite certain how to regulate such businesses so the police department called for the moratorium, the Shakopee Valley News recently reported. Shakopee Police Chief Jeff

Tate said the nature of hookah lounges and shisha bars necessitates a second look. The city is concerned that the businesses could test the boundaries of the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act. The act permits sampling of tobacco products indoors. But the city is concerned the term, sampling, maybe open to varying interpretations. Other concerns include other air-quality issues, electrical codes, fire codes and overall zoning, the newspaper reported. The city wants to decide how it will address those issues before a request to permit hookah lounges and shisha bars is submitted.

LS-H Ponders Adding Girls’ Soccer, Merging With St. Peter High A high level of interest in adding girls’ soccer to the co-curricular offerings Le Sueur-Henderson students have access to has the school district looking at all its offerings and how it will add or subtract programs. The district is also considering when the addition of programs might best be facilitated by a cooperative agreement with a neighboring or nearby school district, like it has with St. Peter for ice hockey. The interest in adding girls’ soccer was considered last year, but tabled to this year, the Le Sueur News-Herald recently reported. Instead, the school board developed a survey based on a Q & A borrowed from St. Peter and tweaked for Le Sueur-Henderson. The point of the survey is to determine if there are other interests that could be met via a cooperative agreement.

Dave Swanberg, the high school’s activities director, is concerned that adding one sport, like girls’ soccer, could detract from another activity. Director Henry Endres, the school board’s chairperson, asked if it is worthwhile to add a sport if it negatively impacts another. A survey of students in sixth through 11th grade indicated about 10 girls per class are interested in soccer. Swanberg said all activities are struggling to varying degrees with participation. Superintendent Rich Hanson suggested the district could improve levels of participation through cooperative agreement with other schools or leave them as is, the newspaper reported. The district could cooperative compete in wrestling with St. Peter. A co-op agreement would move the team from Class A to AA.

A young Native American runner braved near-zero temperatures Thursday morning (Dec. 26) for a segment of the annual Remembrance Run. Runners followed almost an identical path the U.S. Army used when it marched 38 Indians from Fort Snelling to the gallows in Mankato the day after Christmas, 1862. The men were hanged in the largest mass hanging in American history for their part in the Dakota uprising the previous summer. At the intersection of Stoppelmann Boulevard and Highway 169, Raymond Owen of Red Wing, Minn. (left), a Dakota spiritual leader, led Indians songs thanking the creator for life.

Belle Plaine Loses Two More, Hopes for Better Things in 2014 by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School girls’ basketball team fell to Maranatha Christian Academy and Norwood Young America by a combined 99 points in the holiday tournament at NYA on Friday and Saturday. The losses dropped the Tigers to 0-10 on the season. Belle Plaine will begin its quest to turn things around for the 2014 portion of its schedule when it travels to Mankato Loyola for a nonconference game this Thursday night. Maranatha 102, Tigers 32 The Tigers suffered one of their worst defeats in program history when they go stuffed by one of the best small-school teams in the state, Maranatha Christian Academy of Brooklyn Park, 102-32 in the opening round of the NYA Tournament Friday. “They are better than us and we did not step up to the challenge. End of discussion,” said Tigers coach Randy Carlson, adding that his team committed 44 turnovers that led to 19 Maranatha layups. Five Maranatha players scored 14 points or more, while Amara Meyer was the high scorer for Belle Plaine with 12. Mariena Hayden chipped in eight, followed by Elizabeth Johnson with four. The Tigers took on a familiar foe and hung with the host Raiders for much of the contest before turning ice cold down the stretch. “We did a better job of handling the ball tonight and seemed to make progress there,” Carlson said. Belle Plaine, which trailed 2817 at intermission, connected on just four of 16 free throws in the first half and 11 of 31 for the game. Still, the Tigers had the score down to nine points (4738) midway through the second half but scored just four points the rest of the way. “This team needs to find some more presence offensively,” Carlson said. “Elizabeth Johnson played a good overall game tonight and showed signs of improvement. Mariena Hayden and Amara Meyer got in foul trouble again, which makes it tough for us to win when they are not on the floor.” Meyer still finished with a team-high 14 points, followed

The second annual Belle Plaine Pond Hockey Tournament will take place Jan. 4 at the rink across the street form the senior/junior high school building. The event, which will begin at noon and continue all day and into the night, is sponsored by the Belle Plaine Hockey Association (BPHA). There will be two tournaments,

Army National Guard Pfc. Adam L. Alvarado has graduated from basic infantry training at Fort Benning, Columbus, Ga. Alvarado is the son of Molly Koehler of Belle Plaine and Chris Alvarado of St. Paul. He is a 2010 graduate of Belle Plaine High School. During the nine weeks of training, Alvarado received training

in drill and ceremonies, weapons, map reading, tactics, military courtesy, military justice, physical fitness, first aid, and Army history, core values and traditions. Additional training included development of basic combat skills and battlefield operations and tactics, and experiencing use of various weapons and weapons defenses available to the infantry crewman.

Coming off a strong performance at the Minnesota Christmas Tournament in Rochester the previous weekend, the Scott West wrestling team headed northwest this past weekend to compete in the eighth annual Rumble on the Red Championships held at the Fargodome in Fargo, N.D. Scott West has wrestled in the Rumble on the Red in seven of the eight events held and has never finished lower than eighth, and with back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2011, is still the only team to have won the tournament twice. “We have done some pretty good wrestling up here,” insists Scott West coach Darren Ripley. “The Fargodome is a great venue for wrestling and the tournament directors have put together a top-notch event.” Scott West did not walk out of the Fargodome with the team championship this year, but did have a good weekend as it scored enough team points to earn third place out of a tournament field of 69 teams. Apple Valley took first with 343 points, followed by West Fargo and Scott West with 187.5 and 160.5, respectively. Finding himself in the mix of what may have been considered by many to be the deepest and toughest weight bracket in the tournament was David Flynn, as the Scott West junior would wrestle his best tournament ever to win the 126-pound title. After knocking out #3 seed Collin Kraus from Stoughton, Wis., with a first-period pin on Friday night, Flynn got down to some serious wrestling on Saturday as he broke open a scoreless match against Worthington’s returning state champion and #1-rated Anthony Luft by getting a second-period reversal and an overpowering thirdperiod take down to win the match 4-1 and advance to the championship final. That match would be against an old Flynn nemesis in Foley’s Tyler Funk, who had beaten Flynn a couple of times two years ago, with one of them coming at the Rumble on the Red and the other in the state team tournament semifinals. Foley wrestler chose the neutral position to start the third period, Flynn kept the pressure on him and put him to the mat with a solid take down and a 5-0 lead and an eventual 6-0 win. “David’s wrestling was very impressive because not only did he win, but he really dominated the two matches against two very well accomplished wrestlers,” suggests Ripley. Zach Siegle captured the Panthers’ second title as he downed Apple Valley’s Brock Morgan 4-2 in the 145-pound championship. Siegle lead 3-0 before Morgan closed the gap to 3-2 with a take down. The Panther senior came right back with an escape to make it a 4-2 count, and when the Apple Valley wrestler chose neutral for the third period, the two combatants fought it out in a scoreless period and a 4-2 championship win for Siegle. Before Saturday, Michael Kroells was the only Scott West wrestler with two Rumble on the Red titles. However, that would change as junior 160-pounder Andrew Fogarty scored his second victory in as many weeks over West Fargo’s Weston Dobler. The two highly regarded wrestlers had met the previous weekend in the semifinals of the Minnesota Christmas Tournament with Fogarty scoring a decisive 11-1 major decision. Dobler would make things much tougher for Fogarty this time around as the West Fargo wrestler scored the opening take down and a 2-1 firstperiod lead. Fogarty tied the match with his second escape early in the second period, and when a flurry of action occurred along the edge of the mat, it was Fogarty wrapping up and clinging to Dobler’s legs for a 4-2 match-leading take down. Fogarty sealed a hard-fought 6-2 win with a late take down. “Andrew had to fight through some tough situations today,” comments Ripley. “Wrestling is about fighting and Andrew certainly has that quality.” Fogarty’s toughest situation came during his semifinal match with Cambridge-Isanti’s Cody Skog. With Fogarty ahead on a 1-0 escape, Skog dropped Fogarty to his back that led to a four-point move and a 4-2 second-period lead. Skog chose the neutral position but Fogarty hung tough and scored two slide-by take downs to pull out a thrilling 6-5 win. Panther Jake Schultz fought his way to a seventh-place finish at 220 pounds. Belle Plaine cut the margin to four points late in the second half but that was a close as it would get. “This was a good basketball game between two pretty even teams,” said Belle Plaine coach John Wellner. “We started off playing really well and disciplined, but there was a stretch in the first half where we were not patient enough and took some quick shots that missed . . . The key to the game was rebounding. Numerous times we scored on a possession in the second half to cut the lead and then we forced them to miss their first shot on the subsequent possession, but they were able to grab the offensive rebound and score on their second chance. Overall, we played well and made a few mistakes, but G-SL played a little better and took advantage of our mistakes.” Luke Narveson led the Tigers with 20 points, followed by Gavin Dauwalter with 17 and Cameron Lark 15. The funds, estimated to be approximately $8,000 per year, will go to the city for public safety-related purposes. *Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s uncommon for one perfect game to be bowled at an alley in one night. Two perfect games in one night is doubly uncommon and then some. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what happened on April 8 at the Borough Bowl when two members of the same team rolled back-to-back perfect games. Tom Otto and Tony Olson, both members of the Johanâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s City League team, accomplished that feat within an hour of each other â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Otto in the second game and Olson in the third. *The cloudy, wet and cool weather in March and April did not make it feel much like spring in Minnesota, but the slushy snow and rain in those months did a lot to help reduce the drought conditions that had persisted since fall of 2012. According to the county rain gauge on the Ewald and Adella Gruetzmacher farm in Belle Plaine, 12.75 inches of snow/ rain fell in Belle Plaine the first half of April alone, which (after

the snow is melted) computes to 3.46 inches of rain. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s on top of the 12.50 inches of snow in March, which is equivalent to 2.2 inches of rain. *Despite the snow, rain and recent ground thaw, Scott County Emergency Management Director Chris Weldon said that barring any widespread heavy rains along the Minnesota River Valley anytime soon, the risk for major spring flooding was minimal. The cold nights helped reduce the rapidity of moisture from snow melt and ground thaw entering the river. *Belle Plaineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s spring sports teams were getting benched by Mother Nature. In fact, the BPHS baseball team had already played 10 games by April 24 of the 2012 season. But on the same date in 2013, the Tigers had yet to play a game. The snow and chills of this past spring also played havoc on the golf, softball and track and field schedules. The Minnesota River decided to play all of its conference baseball and softball games as doubleheaders to help make up for lost time. *Belle Plaine dogs got a place their owners or other guardians can take them to stretch their legs and/or just hang out with other canines. The Mall of America was the site of Belle Plaine High Schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 2013 prom in May. Plaine Dog Park, equipped with a newly-installed fire hydrant and plenty of open space, is located at the hockey rink across the street from the junior/senior high school building. It officially opened April 29 with an open house. In the cold weather months, the facility is changed back into a hockey rink.

She was the state president of and Ladies Auxiliary of Ancient Order of Hibernians in the early 1980s. *Gas prices in Minnesota reached an all-time high, skyrocketing to an average of $4.27 per gallon for unleaded, 30 cents more than the previous record average of $3.97 set in July of 2008. The price of gas for a gallon of unleaded gas at Belle Plaineâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s three stations was $4.29.9 on May 21. *The Belle Plaine City Council agreed to add nearly $14,000 to the cost of the 2013 street and utility improvement project to help ease parking concerns at the municipal swimming pool. Angle parking would be constructed at the 200 block of South Willow Street adjacent to the pool. *The Belle Plaine High School girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; track and field teams both successfully defended their titles at the Minnesota River Conference Championships in Arlington. All the moisture made it difficult for farmers to work in their fields with regularity, and a number of fields remained seed-free with only a short time remaining before the calender would turn to June. *Despite the efforts of firefighters from five departments, an early-morning fire destroyed the Dave and Cayla Menke family home on May 24. By the time firefighters arrived, the blaze was well established in the garage and spreading into the house. Inspectors said the origin of the fire was likely an electrical malfunction. The Menkes and their two children all got out safely. *Cloudy, chilly and breezy weather propelled organizers to relocate the annual Belle Plaine Memorial Day Program from Veterans Park to Chatfield Elementary School.
