by Dan Ruud Belle Plaine Police Chief Tom Stolee wanted no part of the spotlight at last Tuesday night’s city council meeting. But Mayor Mike Pingalore, city staff and members of the police department pointed it at him anyway. Pingalore said a recent honor bestowed upon Stolee was too big to let it go unceremoniously – that being the Law Enforcement Officer Meritorious Service Award. It was presented to Stolee at the Minnesota South Central Investigators Coalition (MSCIC) conference in Mankato. The MSCIS consists of 42 local, state and federal agencies. Several hundred regional law enforcement personnel were present to see Stolee receive the award. That presentation eventually spilled over to Belle Plaine City Hall. “This is probably the safest place to be in Belle Plaine tonight,” joked Pingalore, referring to the many Belle Plaine Police Department officers in attendance at last Tuesday’s city council meeting. They were there to show their respect to their boss. Stolee’s family was also present. Pingalore read a nomination letter written by police officer Terry Stier to the MSCIC. “I am nominating Chief Stolee for the Law Enforcement Meritorious Service Award for his ‘above and beyond the call

Century Court Drainage Issue Also Addressed by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine City Council last Tuesday night batted around the proposed 2015 street improvement project some more, the key element still in doubt being the need or lack thereof of a sidewalk being part of the project. Following a public hearing on Jan. 5, the council unanimously approved the preparation of the final plans for the nearly $1.3 million project, which consists of street reconstruction and utility improvements on Forest Street West between Grove Street and the railroad right-of-way, and Elk Street between Court and Forest streets (one block). Also included in the project cost is a sidewalk proposed on one side of Forest Street. Removing the sidewalk from the project would reduce the cost of the project by approximately $42,000. The only two affected property owners that spoke at the public hearing on Jan. 5 were Lee Stuewe and Stuart Haefner. Both said the project seems to be overly expensive and would like to see the cost lowered. Haefner also questioned the

played those roles. The play version was written by the late Dale Wasserman. Last year, Belle Plaine won the section championship and made its 12th appearance at the Minnesota State One-Act Play Festival in St. Paul and earned its 11th starred rating in program history with its production of “The Drowsy Professor.” The school earned previous starred ratings at state in 1993, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013. Tony Hartmann and Peter Jacobson

need for the proposed sidewalk. He added that many of the driveways and parking pads in the mobile home park are quite short and a sidewalk would make the parking situation all the more difficult. There was also some discussion as to whether the street needs to remain 40 feet wide in what is not one of town’s busiest traffic areas. Staff reported last Tuesday that these issues were further addressed at a public works committee meeting, concluding that the street width should remain at the city’s standard of 40 feet as to not cause issues for future street projects. The committee also discussed the merits of the sidewalk and did not feel it would be necessary to include in the project, but if it is built, it should be on the south side of Forest Street street between the parking pads and the homes within the city’s right-of-way. Council Member Cary Coop suggested an eventual additional sidewalk/trail extension near Trinity Lutheran Church/ School and replacement of the sidewalk on the 200 block of South Meridian Street. Coop said these sidewalk additions would not have to take place all at once, but rather be phased in over a period of years. As for the sidewalk proposed for this year’s project, the

council agreed to let the public works committee discuss the issue further and bring back a recommendation. In other business last Tuesday night, the council unanimously authorized the city engineering firm of Bolton and Menk to proceed with engineering plans at a cost not to exceed $5,400 to eliminate or reduce the overland water drainage issue on Century Court. The estimated cost of the project it $25,000 to $30,000. In September of 2011, the city authorized storm water drainage improvements in that area, including Sunrise Lane, Meadow Place and Century Court, but problems still persist at Century Court. This past fall, the city sent a letter to affected property owners outlining plans to correct the drainage issues. Not all property owners were happy with what they read, including Corey Hansen, who wrote back. “I am extremely disappointed with the decision and proposed solution that you and the public works committee have come up with after finding out about my daughter’s bike accident caused by the water and algae growth on Century Court.”

With more projects than funding immediately available and an opportunity to attract commercial-industrial development, Scott County commissioners knew a road project had to be rescheduled if County Road 60 in Blakeley Township is to be rebuilt on a new alignment. Last Tuesday (Jan. 20), the county board formally approved the amendment to its Transportation Investment Plan (TIP) that includes some funding for the previously-unscheduled reconstruction of County Road 60 (Blakeley Trail) and a preliminary estimate of $7 million for improvements to an existing interchange at the junction of Interstate Highway 35 and County Road 2 just east of Elko New Market. Commissioners discussed the two projects during a workshop two weeks ago. The amended plan will include approximately spending $852,000 of Scott County money currently in reserves plus about $1.8 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on the realignment and reconstruction of up to a half a mile of County Road 60. The roadway, which ran along the top of a ravine, washed away after a storm June 19 dumped about seven inches of rain on already-saturated soils.

The new alignment would be slightly to the north and well below the existing roadbed. The county considered a culde-sac when the ravine washed away, but opted for the redesign at the insistence of Blakeley Township residents. To build the redesigned roadway, Scott County is seeking approximately $1.8 million of funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Lezlie Vermillion, the deputy county administrator, said County Road 60 provides a link between Highway 169 and the County Road 1 bridge from Scott County to Sibley County. The alignment will also provide solutions for a storm water management pond and correcting the flow of a creek that currently runs behind homes. Commissioner Barbara Marschall of Prior Lake opposes the amendment to the TIP. She indicated the $852,000 from county road and bridge reserves is not money well spent on a road that carries about 300 vehicles a day when there are three other county roads in and out of Blakeley. The $2.6 million realignment and reconstruction of County Road 60 will be planned in 2015 and constructed in 2016, Vermillion said. Commissioner Jon Ulrich of Savage, the Scott County Board’s chairman, called for a workshop discussion of all TIP projects, especially the

I am nominating Chief Stolee because he had a vision, shared that vision with his officers and sold each and every officer on his beliefs. Chief Stolee’s vision was simply this: ‘Treat people like people.’ “This message spread quickly and citizens began to start working with us as in previous years they simply tolerated us,” Stier’s letter continued. “Chief Stolee’s statement of ‘it’s all for the greater good of the department’ could be heard after 60-70 hour weeks. Chief Stolee purchased body cameras for every officer along with new Toughbooks for every squad.

He is big on technology and likes to have the best of the best.” Stier’s letter went on to explain that Stolee also “moves aside his chief duties” to go on calls or assist investigations, from responding to lockouts to assisting in a homicide investigation in 2014. “He strategically moved pieces of the investigation to ensure its efficiency, and in the end, an arrest was made without incident. BPHS’s Cyber Tigers Getting Ready for Regional at U of M

If there’s anything to be learned from finishing at the bottom of the standings last year, members of the Belle Plaine High School robotics team are using those lessons to their advantage as they prepare their entry for the regional competition this year. The Cyber Tigers are in their third year of existence. They are at a point in their development where improving from year to year and learning all they can about robotics along the way is the goal. The team will compete at a regional competition April 2-4 at Mariucci Arena on the University of Minnesota campus. The Cyber Tigers will introduce their robot to the community Feb. 3 just before the boys’ basketball team hosts Sibley East, said Jeff Heine, the Cyber Tigers’ advisor. The robot will present officials the game ball. There will also be a demonstration at halftime. Last year, the team finished last at a 57-team regional competition in Duluth. “We got really good experience from it, Heine said. He admits the team may have been a victim of the success the Cyber Tigers enjoyed in 2013 when BPHS was voted the top first-year team at the regional at the U of M campus. “It was a good experience (in 2014) because we learned a lot. One of those lessons includes the importance of being ready for a pre-regional competition. Saturday, Feb. 14, the Cyber Tigers plan to participate in a preregional competition at either Chanhassen or Chaska High School. The venue is yet to be finalized. “We need to go to that to get a better understanding of the strategies and the challenges of the game, Heine said. “Last year, we didn’t fully understand the strategies to maximize our scoring. The team has to bag its entry in a sealed plastic container by midnight, Feb. 17. Between now and then, team members meet three days a week and work on facets of the robot. The Cyber Tigers plan a competition within the team to determine which of its members will be part of the group that drives the robot during the competition. The event will give the Cyber Tigers and other robotics teams planning to compete at Mariucci Arena a last look at how their robots and teams perform and what needs last-minute adjustment before the entries are bagged and untouchable until the regional competition, said Thea Iverson, the team’s secretary and spokesperson. The team has been working together on the robot since the

Phoning for Pledges Belle Plaine High School seniors were busy dialing for dollars during the annual Dollars for Scholars Phone-A-Thon that took place in the public library’s Rose Room Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Numerous students took turns manning the phones during various hours over the three-day period. A total of $18,305 in pledges was received, which is over $1,000 more than last year. More pledges are expected in the upcoming weeks from people who were not contacted or at home during the event. Proceeds will be used toward scholarships for this year’s graduating class. Pictured during their shift on Sunday are, from left, Emilyn Siemon, Kasey Gallentine, Kala Schmidt, Alesia Hastings and Ben Wagner.

Cyber Tigers Ellen Kreeger (left) and Caitlin Preusser were among the team members working on facets of the team’s robot in preparation for its scheduled public debut (Tuesday, Feb. 3) at the basketball game and a pre-regional competition Feb. 14. The Cyber Tigers are planning to take 14 team members to the regional competition April 2-4 at Mariucci Arena on the University of Minnesota campus. game teams will play against each other at regional competitions – “Recycle Rush -- was unveiled Jan. 3. The Cyber Tigers’ members have a wide variety of experience and skills working with programming, tools and building items. “We work really well together. Sometimes, we get off-task, but then we get back to work, Iverson said. Heine said last year’s Cyber Tigers weren’t ready for the pre-regional competition. This year’s team is committed to being ready, he said. “The only way we won’t go is if we don’t have a cooperating robot, Heine said. The team’s 13 members include seniors Josh and Joey Buck, Hannah Preusser, Breck Dorsher, ninth-graders Noah Sterk, Michael Davis, Keegan Titus, Caitlin Preusser, Taylor Cote, Iverson, eighth-grader Noah Stiemke, Justin Entinger and seventh-grader Ellen Kreeger. A 14th team member, senior Patrick Schaefer, will join the team when the one act play group completes its season, Heine said.

‘Recycle Rush’

This year’s competition is a game called “Recycle Rush. First Robotics, chief promoter of the high school robotics program in Minnesota, created the game. Recycle Rush is a recyclingthemed game played by two

teams working together, known as alliances. Robots score points by stacking totes on scoring platforms, capping those stacks with recycling containers, and properly disposing of soft Styrofoam pool noodles (representing litter). All game pieces used are reusable or recyclable by teams at their respective schools at the end of the season. Each alliance competes on their respective 26-foot by 27-foot side of the playing field. Each match begins with a 15second period where robots operate independently of their drivers. During this period, robots attempt to earn points by moving themselves, their yellow totes, and their recycling containers into the area between the scoring platforms, called the auto zone. During the remaining 2:15 of the match, called the teleop period, robots are controlled remotely by student drivers located behind the walls at the ends of the field. Teams on an alliance work together to place as many totes on their white scoring platforms as possible. Alliances earn additional points for recycling containers placed on the scored totes, with containers at greater height earning more points. Alliances also earn points for disposing of their litter in their landfill zone near the center of the field, or placing litter in or on scored recycling containers.

They were two of about a dozen anglers looking for fish. Hooper and Raleigh were primarily interested in walleye or catfish. Though the fishing was slow, the two men enjoyed banter remembering previous fishing outings.

Cologne Has Expected, Unexpected Positions Open

Carver’s Tasha and Tony Hergott recently received the Carver Heritage Preservation Award for the restoration work they did to their home at 200 Third Street East in Carver’s downtown historic district. The house was built in 1868.

Carver Family Honored for Historic Home Preservation Tasha and Tony Hergott were recently honored or their efforts restoring their 1868 home in downtown Carver. The preservation work includes removing stucco applied to the house’s exterior, refinishing the original wooden siding, and installation of a new roof. They also installed new doors and windows, and painted the house and garage. The couple received the 2014 Carver Heritage Preservation Award for their work on the house at 200 Third Street East. The Carver Heritage Preservation Commission presents the annual award. Along with a plaque honoring their efforts,

the Chaska Herald reported, they received a traveling sign of recognition to be displayed outside the house for a year. The house was built by Carver businessman Henry Zanger and his wife, Susanna. The house featured an Italianate style that includes three bay front façade, a side hall plan, and a low-hipped roof with overhanging eaves. Original detailing included bracketed eaves, grooved or paneled posts on a portico, and six-over-six paned windows. The house at one time had a large stable behind the house near the alley on the site of the present-day garage.

Life Lessons from ‘Mayberry’ by Sen. Kevin Dahle, DFLNorthfield For the past four or five years, I have presented “Life Lessons from Mayberry at our adult forum between Sunday services at the Northfield United Methodist Church. I usually take a couple of Sundays each year highlighting an episode of my favorite TV sitcom, The Andy Griffith Show. My interest in the show runs deep, rooted in the fact that I grew up at the same time of the show’s initial run and I grew up in a small town in Iowa, living the same values, work ethic, and developing similar relationships just like in Mayberry, America’s hometown. Over the years, my forums included episodes such as “Man in a Hurry, “Opie the Birdman, “Sermon for the Day, “Mr. McBeevee and “Opie and the Bully to name a few. This past Sunday, I showed “Andy Forecloses, an episode in which Andy is asked to serve papers evicting a family who failed to pay their mortgage on time. Old Ben Weaver, owner of the property, is so intent on following the letter of the law that he forgets the human element, and in this case, the devastating effect on the Scobees, the family who is forced to pack up and leave their home. The discussion, from those in attendance at the forum, reminds us of some important life lessons we can all do well to revisit. We as legislators have to remember that the laws we pass, revise or repeal have real

effects on real people. Face-to-face discussions with other lawmakers and constituents help us connect with real stories for better understanding. While it is easy to follow the letter of the law, we should keep asking ourselves, what are the important principles behind the legislation? As Barney, Andy, Aunt Bee, and even Opie kick off the fund drive to “Save the Scobees, we are reminded how important community is in meeting the needs of individuals. Our civic groups, schools, our churches, and other community organizations are often asked to fill the gaps when individuals and families are down on their luck. As a state, we certainly want to support these groups and communities in their efforts to assist our neighbors to ensure basic needs are being met. In some instances, we as a state need to step in to fill the gaps. Those initiatives should be purposeful with input from all those who are affected. We can turn the power of one into the power of many. Eventually, even old Ben Weaver realized his efforts were downright mean and he ended up hiring Lester Scobee to work in his department store. I hope we can all take the time to stop, look around, really listen, and offer a hand to those in need. It is the Mayberry way. For more information, contact Sen. Dahle’s legislative aqssistant, Bryan Wells at 651-2965561.

Cologne has two staff positions open -- one it planned for, the other it did not. The city council once again needs to hire a city administrator to guide the staff on day-today city operations. Last Tuesday (Jan. 20), City Administrator John Hendel notified the council’s personnel committee he planned to resign his position to accept a job with Meister Media of Cleveland, Ohio. Hendel plans to continue working for the city as its administrator until April 3. During a brief special meeting Monday (Jan. 26), the council began the process of replacing its administrator. It approved placing ads for the position in area community newspapers, on the city’s Web site and on the state city clerk’s association Web site. The council does not plan to hire a consultant to assist in the search for Hendel’s replacement at this time, he said. Hendel has served as the city’s administrator since the spring of 2013. Meister Media sought Hendel’s expertise last sum-

mer. The council agreed to increase his salary from $70,000 to $100,000 to keep him from leaving. Hendel said the council plans to pay its next city administrator at a level “commensurate with experience. Hendel, 46, plans to stay in Cologne and work for Meister Media remotely. He and his family are well established in the community. He serves Cologne as a paid-on-call firefighter. Hendel will work in the field of putting on special events directly related to agriculture and agri-business. He’s familiar with agriculture, having grown up in Wilmont, Minn. in the southwest corner of the state. The decision to leave Cologne City Hall, he said, is about the job and not dissatisfaction with the city council. Hendel said he’s at a point in his life where if he’s to take on the new position, now is the time. “It’s about the opportunity in an industry I have a passion for, Hendel said.

Public Works Position

With new housing and continued growth planned, the city council approved hiring a third public works staff person to handle street and park needs. The city included the full-time position in its 2015 budget. The city is looking for a person with wastewater treatment expertise. Hiring someone with the needed licenses to run the wastewater treatment plant would allow the city to eliminate its contract staff wastewater treatment person, said Jeff Wildung, Cologne’s public works director. A third person will allow the city to reduce its reliance on part-time staff, he said. The city had three full-time staffers six years ago, but reduced its staffing when the council tightened the city’s spending in the wake of reduced state aid. “We’ve had a lot of extra things we’ve added over the years, Wildung said. “There’s a lot of stuff that takes a lot of man hours.

Annual Salary Likely An Issue in Attracting Next LS-H Schools Boss

by Wess McConville Le Sueur-Henderson can expect 10 to 12 candidates to apply for the superintendent position. To remain competitive with other districts, however, it will need to consider raising the salary it pays its superintendent, says Ed Waltman of South Central Service Cooperative at a recent public meeting held Tuesday, Jan. 13 at the media center in Hilltop Elementary. Of the seven Minnesota River Conference school districts, LS-H offers the lowest salary at $112,200. Central School District, based in Norwood Young America, which at 1,000 students has the lowest enrollment in the conference, compensates its superintendent $117,638. LS-H currently has 1,070 students enrolled. There are nine other similarly sized schools currently searching for a superintendent, including MRC counterpart Watertown-Mayer, which compensates its superintendent $143,225 annually. Waltman suggested that LS-H raises its compensation by $5,000 to $10,000. Nationally, Minnesota superintendents are among the lowest paid, outside of North and South Dakota. For this reason, Waltman said LS-H will receive few if any out-state candidates, other than ones who are coming back to the area. A challenge that not only LS-H, but all districts, face in its superintendent search is that the position is not tenured, like teachers and principals receive. Superintendents are employed contractually — with the maximum number of years at three. Waltman said there are many superintendents with contracts not being renewed, and because of this, tenured principals hesitate to move up to the superintendent position and potentially put their family in harm’s way. And, says Waltman, many former superintendents have had trouble finding work once their contracts have not been renewed, rightly or wrongly, because potentially negative articles and comments are highly accessible by potential employers and community members

split decision to Bob Kilbury of Glen Lake in the finals the same night.

Undefeated The 1984-85 Belle Plaine girls’ eighth grade basketball team finished the season with a record of 10-0. Pictured in the back row, from left, are Amy Hayden, Dawn Haedike, Pam Huebert, Wendy Behnke, Wendy Wolff and coach LaVerne Larson. In the middle row are Wendy Trost, Allison Witt, Deanna Koepp, Lisa Bessel and Heidi Gloege. In the front row are Dawn Gerdes, Bev Wynne, Michelle Mahoney and Julie Murphy. A 15-year-old rural Belle Plaine youth was killed about 2:50 p.m. that Sunday in a freak accident in the driveway of his farm home in Faxon Township. Sibley County Sheriff Roger Graham said Mark Andrew Strack, son of Richard Strack of New York and Mrs. Dan Morgan of rural Belle Plaine, was mounted on a go-cart being pulled by a three-wheeler driven by a 14-year-old neighbor boy. The Strack boy was wearing a scarf that got caught in a sprocket on the rear-wheel driving mechanism. “We’re assuming he died of neck injuries,” the sheriff said. He was pronounced dead on arrival to St. Francis Hospital in Shakopee. Minnesota cities would lose their powers to license bingo operations and other forms of legalized gambling to the state on March 1. “In 1985, the individuals and entities will be in violation of state law and no one can predict how strong the enforcement of the Gambling Control Board will be,” wrote Belle Plaine City Administrator Dave Unmacht. Could Gov. Rudy Perpich’s proposal to let secondary school students pick and choose their school district create a popularity contest among school districts? Belle Plaine school administrators thought it could. Some said the governor’s plan could create an “administrative nightmare” in the areas of transportation, budgeting, the foundation aid program, teacher hiring and program planning. There were signs in Belle Plaine and elsewhere in Minnesota that week that regular gasoline prices might dip below the $1 per gallon mark in the near future. The posted price for regular self-service gaso-

line ranged between $1.039 to $1.049 at many local stations. Since November, 1984, oil prices had dropped from between $29 and $30 a barrel to slightly more than $25. Grace C. O’Brien, 77, of Belle Plaine, passed away Jan. 28 at Minnesota Valley Memorial Hospital in Le Sueur. She was born July 4, 1907 in Blakeley Township to Peter and Grace (Hessian) Weldon. She grew up in the Belle Plaine area and graduated from Belle Plaine High School. She married Eugene T. O’Brien Oct. 30, 1928 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Belle Plaine. Services for Lillian Woods, 97, of Arlington, who died Jan. 22, were held at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Arlington Township. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery, Belle Plaine. Mrs. Woods was born Aug. 7, 1887 in Belle Plaine to Henry and Charlotte (Langley) Busch. She attended grade school in Belle Plaine. She married William Woods April 11, 1915 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Belle Plaine. They farmed in Arlington Township. Heidi Harsh, Miss Belle Plaine, would be one of 61 queens to arrive in St. Paul on Jan. 31 for “Wintertainment 1985” and the St. Paul Winter Carnival. The Belle Plaine High School boys’ basketball team hosted the Montgomery Redbirds and lost 47-42. Leading scorers for the Tigers were Bill Fogarty, with 12 points, Paul Pudlitzke with 10 and Rich Halquist nine. The wrestling Tigers ran their record to 12-1 with victories over Nicollet 34-16, Mankato Loyola 60-6 and Montgomery 48-13. Belle Plaine wrapped up a season-high six pins against Monty. Providing them were Paul Murphy, Jim Buesgens, Brian Clymer, Andy Fogarty, Greg Schmitt and Brian Stier.

There was dog trouble that winter. A petition loaded with names was presented to the council to do something toward eliminating the packs of ownerless dogs. The Le Sueur County auditor and county attorney met with the Scott County Board about the St. Thomas-Belle Plaine judicial road, claiming Le Sueur County was without funds for its short share. William Westphal and Herman Yahnke exchanged properties. Westphal bought Yahnke’s 65acre farm and Yahnke took over the Westphal house in town. In those years the prevailing auto was the touring car. Nick Frank made an enclosed car out of Alois Blaha’s touring car, giving it top and glass sides for wind-proof as a factory-built auto. A native of this community for 62 years died in the person of John Haas. He died unexpectedly of a stroke. A wife and seven sons survived him. F.H. Gustafson, who had been in charge of the tailor shop at the Model store for 10 years, invested in a clothing store at Heron Lake, and he and his wife moved there. Firemen were announcing their annual masque ball. Cash prizes in the amount of $40 were offered for dancers in costume. Mrs. John C. Morrison, 61, died at the family home in Mobridge, S.D., and her remains were brought to Belle Plaine for funeral services at Sacred Heart Church. Born in Faxon Township, a daughter of the late Patrick Duffy, Belle Plaine was her home during the long period in which her husband was in the mercantile business here and later as postmaster. They were still selling land in Texas. Land promoters were busy in the area getting folks signed up for excursions to the Rio Grande Valley. Two busses and a truck became stalled on the highway between Belle Plaine and Le Sueur and completely blocked travel for the night. Elizabeth Maus, 47, died at the home of her brother Nick at Chaska. Her remains were brought to Belle Plaine for burial. Governor Christianson was asking the legislature to curtail expenditures. He asked for a $3,000,000 cut.

Continued cold prevailed, hitting the record low for the winter of 34 below zero, The parish of St. Peter and Paul decided to add a wing to its school building. An order for $70,000 bricks was let to Daugs & Weist. J.E. Townsend received the appointment as postmaster to succeed E.E. Chamberlain, whose four-year term expired. There was complaint of fast driving on the streets. The marshal was ordered to curtail our reckless horsemen. The leading news item of the week was arrival at port of New York of the big French passenger steamship La Gascogne, which had been given up for loss as the arrival was eight days overdue. Delay was due to an engine breakdown.

Deputy Sheriff, Carver Man Injured in Head-on Crash

A Carver County Sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured in a crash Thursday in Carver. Deputy Erick Boder was injured Thursday night (Jan. 22), around 9:10 p.m., when an oncoming vehicle struck his patrol cruiser near the intersection of County Road 11 and Fourth Street in Carver. Boder, a 10-year veteran, was patrolling Carver traveling northbound on County Road 11 just south of Fourth Street. A southbound vehicle, driven by Jason Horowitz, 46, of Carver, crossed the centerline and crashed head-on with Boder. An off-duty Carver firefighter following behind Horowitz witnessed the crash and stopped immediately to render aid. At the same time, an off-duty sheriff’s sergeant was traveling in the area and immediately happened upon the crash and provided aid to the injured drivers. Both men remained in satisfactory condition at Hennepin County Medical Center Monday afternoon. Both Boder, 40, and Horowitz were wearing seatbelts. Firefighters from Carver Fire Department and Chaska Fire Department used the Jaws of Life tool to extricate Boder from the wrecked squad. He had suffered severe injuries and was transported by air ambulance to HCMC.

With Scott West now ahead 33-26 going into heavyweight match, Josiah Schatz would close out the meet with a 1-0 win over Kyle Lypkie, his third win of the year over the Tiger heavyweight. Scott West would now do battle with Elk River in the Ranger Duals finals as the Elks knocked off the #8-rated Foley to prevent a rematch of the state team semifinal meet from a year ago. It would be Parker Huss leading the way again as he matched up with longtime wrestling rival Anthony Meister in this one at 106 pounds. As the pair of sophomores battled, Huss got to Meister’s legs not once, not twice, but three times and the third one was the charm as he turned that one into a 3-1 third period match-winning take down. Jackson Stauffacher didn’t find himself in one of those so called hard-fought matches on this day as the freshman put Alex Sanborn away in the first period for his third pin of the day at 113 pounds. There would be a hard-fought match at 120 pounds as Elk River’s #5-rated Garrett Caldon did battle with Carter Piche. Piche put multiple attacks on Caldon and in the flurry of action had several scoring opportunities, but to the Elk wrestlers’ credit, he would fend them all off and find one of his own that he converted to win an action-packed 3-0 match. After Ben Kelvington recorded a first period pin of Matt Osberg at 126 pounds, Ryan Siegle put up big points late in the third period as he broke open a 3-2 match by throwing Ben Gibas to his back for a five-point move and a big 8-2 win at 132 pounds. Senior David Flynn put up another big win for the Panthers as he again used three take downs to mount an 11-1 major decision over Kyle Ziemer at 138 pounds. Trailing 22-3 at this point, Elk River would come back with two solid wins of its own as Cole Moening scored a 9-0 major decision over Dylan Johnson at 145 pounds and Sam Gibas followed with a wild 12-8 win over Tyler Buesgens at 152 pounds. Elk River then forfeited to Deshawn Carter at 160 pounds, and when Andrew Fogarty pinned Colin Murphy in the first period, Scott West led 34-10. After Panther Taylor Yahnke was pinned by Casey Schilz at 170 pounds, Tyler Grieves would be the Panther to put the meet away as the junior scored a big 8-4 decision over Brendan Simmonds at 195 pounds. Jacob Allen was pinned at 220 pounds by Elk River’s Bobby Schmitz and Scott West heavyweight Josiah Schatz put it all together as he broke open a scoreless first period tie by locking up big Elk wrestler Stephen McGuire in a second period match-ending cradle and a Scott West victory. Scott West will host New Prague Thursday night in Belle Plaine.

INCOME TAX PREPARATION open year round

By Dr. Kelly Smith

It will be a busy evening in our schools on Thursday, January 29 as we will be hosting Watertown-Mayer in girl’s basketball in the South gym and New Prague for wrestling in the North gym. That same evening, the One Act Play will present “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” to the public at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. The One Act Play cast and crew will begin Sub-Section competition this Saturday when they perform against six other schools at the Sub-Section One Act Play Competition at the LeSueur-Henderson High School in LeSueur beginning at 10 a.m. The Belle Plaine performance is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. Good luck to all of you as you seek to advance to the Section Competition on Saturday, 2/7 in Jordan! This Saturday will also be tournament time for our Belle Plaine Explosion Dance Team as they compete at the Section Dance Meet at Mound Westonka High School. The dance team recently concluded their conference schedule with a 1st place finish in High Kick and a 2nd place finish in Jazz. In addition, All-Conference awards were announced with the following dancers being named to the squad: Seniors, Krista Peltonen, Alesia Hastings, Kala Schmidt & Jane Schneider; Junior Ally Fink was named Honorable Mention; and first year head coach Sibel Dikmen was named MRC Coach of the Year in both High Kick and Jazz. Congratulations Coach Dikmen and dancers on your success so far and good luck in the Section competition on Saturday! Each legislative session the Schools for Equity in Education (SEE) organization seeks to organize stakeholder visits to the MN Capitol to discuss education issues. This year, Belle Plaine, New Prague, Northfield and Waconia school districts will be visiting the capitol on Tuesday, February 3rd. We will be visiting our local legislators in an effort to relay local concerns regarding education funding and support. I would love to have Belle Plaine community members join me for this visit. If you are interested in visiting the Capitol on February 3rd, please get in contact with me by Monday, February 2nd. We will plan to leave Belle Plaine at about 8:20 a.m. and return to town between 2 and 2:30 p.m. Last year two community members attended and I would love to have even more attend this year. Due to some scheduling conflicts within our buildings, our first day of spring conferences for Chatfield and Oak Crest Elementary Schools will be moved from Monday March 16 to Tuesday, March 17. The second night of conferences remains on the 19th. The individual conference sessions are scheduled for our elementary schools and the sign up website will be available in the coming weeks. I apologize for the inconvenience that this scheduling change may cause for anyone. Parent-teacher conferences for grades 7-12 will be held on Thursday, February 19th and Monday, February 23rd. Conferences will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. each day. As always, if you have any questions about school matters, please feel free to call me at 873-2400 or check our website at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us. You may also find me on Twitter at @BPTiger716. It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security benefits. A person can take a reduced benefit as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full benefit at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger benefit. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced benefit, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you benefit from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years filled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may fill only a limited amount of your financial demands. The PGA of America wants you. The PGS recently opened up a selection process on its Web site. Over 11,000 applications have already been received. The deadline to apply is March 2. A Shakopee woman, LaDonna Goulet, recently claimed a $1 million Minnesota Lottery prize. Goulet played the $1 Mega Millions Lottery game. Her ticket matched the five numbers drawn Jan. 6, giving her the $1 million prize, the Shakopee beginning 1/25/2015

3 offenders – considered the most likely to reoffend – from living anywhere within 2,000 feet of schools, churches, playgrounds, or other places where children might congregate. The proposed ordinance won’t impact Robert Jeno’s potential relocation from a state sex offender treatment program to a group home in Le Center, which is about a block away from a playground, the Le Center Leader recently reported. The ordinance might, however, prohibit the group home from accepting any additional level 3 offenders. Le Center City Attorney Jason Moran noted the constitutionality of the proposed ordinance has not yet been tested in the courts. Councilor Gary Meidlinger Jr., who worked with Moran to draft the proposed ordinance, is unconcerned. He said parents want their children to be safe. “I remember growing up in Le Center and feeling very safe,” Meidlinger said.

Sidewalk Still Debatable for 2015 Street Improvement Project Hansen when on to explain the drainage problem and its causes in more detail. “Some of us in the neighborhood have started collecting pictures, documents, testimonials and whatever it takes to prove to you (City Engineer Joe Duncan and Public Works Superintendent Al Fahey) that this subdivision has issues that the city needs to address before someone gets seriously hurt or homes in this area incur further damage.” Hansen’s entire letter, including intent to take legal action against the city if it comes to it, was included in the council’s packet last Tuesday. “This issue was discussed again at the January public works committee meeting,” reported City Administrator Holly Kreft. “Staff’s recommendation was to complete a project that would connect the existing drain tile on private property to the storm sewer located on the north end of Century Court ... This would address the issue of overland water flow and the cause of the ice buildup and algae.” Bolton and Menk will proceed with finalizing the latest plans and the city will determine whether to add the work to the

put their minds at ease.” Stier also explained that Stolee has been the founder of community-based programs such as Tiger Watch Safe Zone. He’s also a “cop’s chief,” whether it be “answering his phone at 0300 (3 a.m.) and responding to a burglary in progress to lobbying the city council to purchase a new squad car.” “Tom Stolee is a cop’s chief, if you will,” Stier wrote. “He wears a uniform to work and has been known to start the day at 0500 (5 a.m.) and end it around 2000 (8 p.m.). Chief Stolee is a great example of a law enforcement officer, a loving father and husband, and a loyal friend.” After Pingalore finished reading Stier’s letter, Stolee began to deflect the spotlight away from himself. “I am truly humbled. Good things happen in Belle Plaine everyday. I’m thankful to be its police chief. Tonight is not about me – it’s about all of you,” said Stolee as he pointed around the room toward his fellow police department personnel, his family, city staff, the mayor and city council. Stolee was a Belle Plaine police officer from 1992 to 2002, including as sergeant the last several of those years. He then went to work for the Jordan Police Department until being hired as Belle Plaine’s police chief in early 2010. Stolee has earned two lifesaving awards in his career, one as an officer for Belle Plaine and the other when he was with Jordan. While working for the BPPD, he pulled a man out of a brush fire near the Blakeley Road and extinguished the flames. The JPD lifesaving award came after he responded to a car crash, in which a young girl in a car seat was not breathing. Stolee repositioned her airway, saving her life. Stolee was the guest speaker at Belle Plaine’s 2013 Memorial Day Program. His wife, Amy, is a fifth grade teacher at Oak Crest Elementary School in Belle Plaine. They have two children – Tyler and Allison.

A very special thank you to Pastor Mark Johnson, Hospice, Oak Terrace, The Lutheran Home, The Women’s staff who prepared & served the luncheon & those who donated food, cash or who helped in any way. Thank you, Roger & Peggy Neumann Kyle, Kim, Neesa Neumann & Troy Gudmonson Chad, Nichole, Andrew & Adam Neumann

To our friends in the Belle Plaine and Jordan Communities Words cannot express the gratitude and love we feel for each and every person who has been praying for our family for the past year. We have been supported in prayer, food, donations and acts of kindnesses that have brought us to tears. To those who planned and attended the “White Out for Lumpy night, it was absolutely amazing. Hearing from past basketball players and coaches from both towns was humbling and a testimony to the kinds of people who live around us. Our children have learned so much about kindness from each of you. It has been a very trying year, but with your love we look forward to much brighter days. May God Bless each of you.

H.S. Boys’ Basketball

Tigers Win 2 of 3 by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School boys’ basketball team won back-to-back games for the first time this season in downing Norwood Young America 70-52 last Tuesday night and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 7052 Thursday night. Friday night was not as kind to Belle Plaine as it lost at New Ulm 59-51. The Tigers, 2-5 in the Minnesota River Conference, 3-13 overall, were scheduled to head to MRC co-leader Le SueurHenderson Tuesday night after this edition of the Herald went to press. They will be at Watertown-Mayer this Friday night and will play host to Sibley East next Tuesday night. Tigers 56, NYA 43 Mitchel Stier drained 20 points (all in the second half) as the Tigers earned their second MRC win of the season at Norwood Young America. Belle Plaine’s other conference win also came on the road at Sibley East a week before Christmas. Following Stier in point totals Friday night were Luke Narveson (12), Brandon Schulz (9), Nathan Hermann (7), Joe Hankins (4), Sam Gregory (2) and Taylor Lenz (2). Stier also led the team in rebounds with 10, while Narveson, Hermann and Schulz each added eight. The Tigers led 21-18 at halftime. Brice Panning had 19 points for the Raiders. “Our defensive and offensive rebounding really made the difference in this game,” said Belle Plaine coach John Wellner, adding that the Tigers held the Raiders to two of 25 shooting from three-point range. “We made a point of contesting every shot and keeping them out of the middle and our kids did a great job of that.” Tigers 70, GFW 52 Belle Plaine broke away from a 33-33 halftime deadlock by holding GFW to 19 points over the final 18 minutes en route to a 70-52 victory Thursday night in Belle Plaine. Accounting for most of the damage to the visitors was Narveson, who poured in 37 points. The other scorers for the Tigers were Hermann (9), Schulz (9), Kincade Retzer (7), Stier (7) and Derek Guscette (1). Narveson was also tops in rebounds with 14, followed by Stier with eight and Hermann seven. Schulz and Hankins both had three assists. “We played really well this game,” Wellner said. “Again, our defense was key for us, especially in the second half when we held them to 19 points. Luke Narveson had a terrific game, especially offensively. He was

shooting well and he took the ball to the basket well, which allowed us to get several easy shots.” New Ulm 59, Tigers 51 Poor shooting kept the Tigers from winning their third straight game as the Eagles won by eight points in New Ulm Friday night. “This was a tough game for us,” Wellner said. “We simply didn’t execute defensively and we had one of our worst shooting nights of the year. Give credit to New Ulm. They did some things that we had not seen yet this year and that threw us off our game. These nights happen in high school basketball, especially on the road. The important thing is for us to come back and keep improving.” Stier led Belle Plaine in scoring with 14 points, while Narveson was held to nine. Retzer, Lenz and Ponath each had six points. 2014-15 BPHS Boys’ Basketball Results and Remaining Schedule Nov. 25 at LCWM L 59-47 Dec. 1 at WEM L L 67-36 Dec. 4 at G-SL L 60-45 Dec. 9 vs. LS-H L 80-53 Dec. 12 vs. W-M L 77-49 Dec. 13 vs. Waseca L 75-32 Dec. 16 at BEA L 87-71 Dec. 19 at S.E. Belle Plaine Wins Another MRC Championship

Two-Sport Night at BPHS Thursday It will be a rare two-sport night at Belle Plaine High School this Thursday night as both the Belle Plaine girls’ basketball and Scott West wrestling teams will be in action just down the hall from each other. The varsity wrestling match against New Prague is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. in the north gym and the basketball game against Watertown-Mayer at 7:30 p.m. in the south gym.

The Belle Plaine High School Explosion dance team won the Minnesota River Conference championship in high kick and was second in jazz after finishing first and second in those two events in the final MRC meet of the season Friday night in Belle Plaine. Mayer Lutheran took the top spot in jazz. Norwood Young America and Jordan finished third and fourth, respectively. Despite finishing second in jazz behind Mayer Lutheran, winning jazz at the previous MRC meet allowed Belle Plaine to secure its spot as the overall 2015 MRC champion. “Dancing our kick routine on Friday meant a number of things to our team. The first being a tough challenge for eighth-grader Mai Nguyen, who was put in as an alternate just one day before performing at the conference championship,” said Belle Plaine coach Sibel Dikmen. “I speak for both myself and Mai’s teammates when I say she did an amazing job. We also used this performance at the MRC championship to set the tone for our invitational at Simley the following day as well as the week heading into sections. The girls beautifully executed all of the precision we had been working towards in practice and we again took first in the high kick category. “We went into the evening hoping for another win over Mayer Lutheran in the jazz category, but despite another great performance by our varsity jazz team and some changes to choreography, Mayer Lutheran’s dancers nailed their perfor-

mance and took the first place win that evening,” Dikmen continued. At the awards ceremony that followed Friday night’s competition, Belle Plaine’s Krista Peltonen, Jane Schneider, Alesia Hastings and Kala Schmidt were awarded All-Conference honors. Ally Fink received honorable mention. Dikmen was named Coach of the Year in both kick and jazz. “Their years of participating on the dance team, academic excellence and overall exceptional qualities allowed them this honor,” said Dikmen, referring to her team’s All-Conference recipients. “Their unique leadership is one of the things we will miss the most next year. Krista is the captain who leads with honesty. She holds everyone on the team to a high standard of excellence needed to accomplish the goals we’ve set before us. Alesia leads by example. She consistently demonstrates to her teammates what it means to be dedicated to this sport. Kala’s greatest asset as a leader is her friendliness. She is always willing to work one-onone with a teammate who may be struggling. Jane’s speciality is motivating and humbling our team. It could have been very easy to expect our previous season’s successes to repeat themselves this year but Jane keeps the girls motivated to work harder everyday.” Dikmen added that being named Coach of the Year was “a surprising honor.” “Stepping into previous coach Kathi Stauffacher’s shoes was no easy challenge, but I contin-

ue to dedicate myself to coaching and create my own path for this team,” she said. Simley Invitational Belle Plaine wrapped up the invitational competitive season at Saturday’s Simley Invitational. Belle Plaine went up against 10 other AA teams, including Section 3AA rivals Mound Westonka and Holy Family Catholic. “We haven’t seen many of our section competitors following the winter break and it was a great opportunity to get scored against them to get some idea of where we stand. We also used this competition as an opportunity to practice for section (this Saturday),” Dikmen said. “The energy was high as we went out to perform our kick routine and the girls really nailed it. As much as we would have loved to take home a trophy going against strong, repeat state-appearing teams like Austin, Mound Westonka and Simley, we placed sixth with a rank point total of 17 and left with a stronger determination to work hard this week for section. We plan to make a few minor changes to our kick routine again this week and polish the unchanged portions.” In jazz at Simley, Belle Plaine finished 10th among 12 teams. Tigers a Rare Prey for Giants Panthers Claim MRC Crown; Capture Forest Lake Duals by Dan Ruud All sporting streaks, good and bad, come to an end at some point in time, which was the case at the Hilltop Elementary School gym in Henderson Friday night. The Le Sueur-Henderson girls’ basketball team put a halt to its 36-game losing streak in the Minnesota River Conference with a 62-50 victory over Belle Plaine. It was the Giants’ first win in MRC play since February of 2012, a season they finished 4-10. They were 0-14 in 201213, 0-14 in 2013-14 and 0-5 so far this season. Belle Plaine, 0-6 in the MRC, 2-14 overall, currently possesses the longest losing streak in MRC play, having now dropped seven in a row since beating LS-H in the second to final game of last season. Following a 76-34 conference loss at home to unbeaten Norwood Young America last Tuesday night in Belle Plaine, the Tigers lost a nonconference at Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop 61-54 Thursday night. The Tigers were scheduled to host New Ulm in a nonconference game Tuesday night after this edition of the Herald went to press. They will host Watertown-Mayer this Thursday night and Nicollet next Monday night before heading to Sibley East next Tuesday night. NYA 76, Tigers 34 Belle Plaine fell behind 25-5 in the early going as the undefeated Raiders rolled to another victory. “There is a reason that NYA is in the top five in the state,” said Tigers coach Randy Carlson. “They have an outstanding all-around guard and great shooters. They took it to us in the first half with Kaylie Brazil (21 first-half points) leading the way.” Mariena Hayden finished with 10 points for Belle Plaine, followed by Ireland Lambrecht (7), Paige Narveson (5) and Torie Kellogg (4). Megan Schmitz, Elizabeth Johnson, Amelia Kahle and Haleigh Weiers all had two points. Hayden completed another double-double with 10 rebounds. GFW 61, Tigers 54 Belle Plaine found itself down big early again as the Thunderbirds raced to a 37-23 halftime lead and an eventual sevenpoint victory at GFW Thursday night.. “They came at us pretty hard early and by the time we blinked we were down 19-4,” Carlson said. “The second half we worked hard to get the lead down to three with a couple of minutes to play. We had chances to score but missed shots and a turnover caused us to come up empty.” Hayden had another complete game for the Tigers with 24 points, 12 rebounds and two steals. Kellogg just missed out on a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. Johnson had six points, five assists and four rebounds. Other scorers for Belle Plaine were Weiers (4), Narveson (3), Lambrecht (3), Kahle (2), Schmitz

Belle Plaine’s Ireland Lambrecht, right, scored seven points against NYA last Tuesday night at the BPHS gym. (1) and Alissa Schultz (1). LS-H 62, Tigers 50 It looked early as though the Tigers would hand the Giants MRC loss No. 37 in a row Friday night as they jumped out to an 11-3 lead. But LS-H, with a vocal fan base cheering it on, went on an 8-0 run to tie the score and eventually head to halftime with a 27-24 lead. An 11-0 run by the Giants broke open what was a close game much of the second half. “We jumped out to a quick lead and some turnovers and missed shots allowed them to claw back into the game,” Carlson said. “Mariena Hayden had a good game (28 points and 14 rebounds) but we have to

get other people to step up and score for us – be confident in their shot and make plays. This was a difficult game to lose but LS-H was the better team tonight.” Following Hayden in scoring for the Tigers were Schultz (8), Narveson (6), Johnson (3), Kahle (3) and Lambrecht (2). Carlie Brandt had 27 points for LS-H.

After wrapping up its 13th Minnesota River Conference championship with a 50-17 win over Tri-City United Friday night in Montgomery, the Scott West wrestling team rolled into Forest Lake early Saturday morning to compete in the 2015 Ranger Duals, where it would put together three solid team wins to win its second team championship in as many days. “Our kids put together a solid team tournament,” states Scott West coach Darren Ripley. “Overall, they wrestled well and they wrestled hard.” Saturday’s hard day of wrestling for Scott West started with a 46-21 win over the host team, Forest Lake. The Panther win over the Rangers would set up a much anticipated dual meet match up in the semifinals with the Stewartville Tigers. It was just a couple of weeks earlier when Scott West traveled to the Stewartville Invitational and the Panthers had to settle for a second place team finish as they fell 5.5 team points short of the host team Tigers. The Panthers would not fall short on this Saturday as they claimed a 36-26 dual meet win. The meet began with Scott West 106-pound sophomore Parker Huss winning a rematch of the Stewartville Invitational championship finals as he downed junior Joey Thompson 2-1 for a second time. However, Thompson did not make it easy as Huss got his lone score late in the first period as he used an arm tie to get behind his Tiger opponent for what would prove to be the match-winning take down at the buzzer. After Panther Jackson Stauffacher delivered his third pin this year over Tyler Lawres at 113 pounds, Carter Piche found himself in his second scrap with Tanner Prochaska. Piche had won the first one 3-1 in overtime in the semifinals at the Stewartville Invitational. This time Prochaska would turn the tables as he rode an opening period take down to a 4-2 win. Scott West would win the next three matches as Ben Kelvington scored a second period pin fall over Ryan Clark at 126 pounds. Although the Panthers put on some good leg attacks and scored three take downs in each of the next two matches, they would not pick up any bonus points as Ryan Siegle won

8-2 over Hunter Johnson at 132 and David Flynn won a 9-2 decision over Alex Higgins at 138. The Scott West wins put the Panthers up 21-3 over the Tigers. Dylan Johnson lost a 19-4 technical fall match to Stewartville’s returning state qualifier Brady Keefe at 145, but he saved at the time a valuable team point by not giving up the pin. Tyler Buesgens would please the Scott West fans in attendance as he picked up the Panthers’ third pin fall of the meet

in the second period against Stewartville’s Shawn Curtis at 152 pounds. However, Stewartville’s Aaron Clark would keep the Tigers in the meet as he won a hard-fought 6-2 match over Deshawn Carter at 160 pounds. Andrew Fogarty would then come to the mat and give the Panthers a nearly insurmountable 33-11 team lead as he scored a third period body lock pin fall of Troy Bailey at 170 pounds.

The Panthers’ Deshawn Carter had his opponent from TCU off-balance during much of their match Friday night in Montgomery.

Scott West eighth-grader Jon Huss, right, tried to fend off an attack by TCU senior Max Arroyo during Friday night’s dual in Montgomery.

Haleigh Weiers, left, and the rest of the Tigers had a difficult time finding room to penetrate NYA’s tough defense last Tuesday night at the BPHS gym.

The Panthers’ Tyler Buesgens controlled his opponent from TCU during Friday night’s dual in Montgomery.

Belle Plaine’s Torie Kellogg (45) tried to make things as difficult as possible for unbeaten NYA last Tuesday night at the BPHS gym. Scott West’s Ben Kelvington, top, defeated his opponent from Tri-City United Friday night in Montgomery.

Belle Plaine Senior High School choir students will tour and perform at Graceland, learn from a university choir professor, the Grand Ole Opry and a Southern plantation where slaves sang spirituals during a choir trip to Tennessee in March. Monday, the school board unanimously approved the trip for 139 students in Cheryl Gorton’s choir program. Students will leave March 26 and return March 31. Gorton told the board the trip brings classroom lessons to life. “It’s not a vacation. It’s a performance tour,” she said. The tour will cost the students $855 plus their own spending money. About half the students have spent the past two years on fund-raising projects, she said. After a 14½-hour bus ride from Belle Plaine to Nashville, the students will visit the Country Music Hall of Fame Friday afternoon (March 27). The displays include original song manuscripts, stage costumes. The choir will also perform at historic RCA Studio B on Music Row. Saturday, the BPHS choir students will visit Vanderbilt University. The students will spend two hours working with and performing for David Binn Williams, a choir professor at Vanderbilt. They will also perform for the public at Ryman Auditorium. Later that afternoon and into the evening, the choir students will visit the Grand Ole Opry for a performance. Following the performance, the students will attend a concert at the Opry. Sunday, the students will return to the Opry to tour country music’s most famous venue. That afternoon, the students will visit Hermitage, the plantation home of Andrew Jackson, the United States’ seventh president. The tour of the 1,120acre plantation will include slave cabins. The students have been learning the spiritual style slaves sung as part of their daily lives on the plantation. After a bus ride to Memphis, the students will visit Elvis Presley’s Graceland Monday morning. The tour includes seeing his gold records and Meditation Garden where Presley and members of his family are buried.

At noon Monday, the BPHS choir will perform at Graceland Plaza. That afternoon, the touring choir will visit Beale Street, a section of the city where they’ll experience a wide array of music genres, Gorton told the board. Later in the afternoon, the students will leave Beale Street for Sun Studios where in 1954, an unknown Elvis Presley performed. His talent made Sun Studio one of the most famous recording studios in the world. The students will complete their tour Monday evening with dinner before beginning the 12½-hour bus ride back to Belle Plaine. In other action at the Jan. 26 meeting, the Belle Plaine School Board: • Paid bills totaling $4,586,449.79. • Heard a report on Ramp Up to Readiness, a program aimed at preparing junior and senior high school students for life after high school graduation. • Heard a report from Chad

Williams, special services director, on the transition program the district shares with Jordan Schools. • Hired Diane Tye as long-term substitute for Chatfield Counselor Brittany Gores effective Jan. 15, 2015 for approximately six weeks. • Approve Delores Johnson as a long-term substitute for Chatfield Elementary’ School first grade teacher Megan Voigt effective approximately April 30 through the end of the school year. • Approve a Belle Plaine, ninth-grader to attend Chaska High School effective Oct. 6, 2014. • Approve a Jordan kindergarten resident attending Chatfield Elementary for the 2014-15 school year. • Passed a resolution directing administration to review school district programs and budgets to make recommendations for any necessary spending cuts. • Approved the teacher seniority list. The list has been reviewed and OK’d by staff. It will be a tool used if staffing reductions are enacted.

BPHS One-Act Play Saturday’s Subsection Contest

(continued from page 1)

Belle Plaine’s quest to capture a 12th star will start at this Saturday’s subsection one-act play festival at Le Sueur-Henderson High School. Belle Plaine will be joined in the seven-team competition by Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop, Jordan, Le Sueur-Henderson, Norwood Young America, Sibley East and Tri-City United. The top two-rated performances will advance to the following week’s section contest at Jordan. The event is open to the public. Doors open at 9 a.m. with the first of seven plays to begin at 10 a.m. Belle Plaine is scheduled to take the stage at 2:15 p.m. Each show last’s approximately 35 minutes. The last play is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., followed by the awards ceremony. The all-day cost is $6 for adults and $4 for students. Those costs apply regardless of

how many plays you watch. The public is invited to a free showing of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” 7 p.m. this Thursday at the Belle Plaine Performing Arts Center. Because the play has challenging themes and situations, families with young children who wish to attend are encouraged to make alternative plans for them. About the Play As told through the eyes of the presumed deaf mute, Chief Bromden, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” depicts the fierce struggle for change and control in a state psychiatric hospital between its patients and the unbendable Head Nurse Ratchet. The catalyst comes in the form of a rogue named Randall P. “Mac” McMurphy, who is admitted to the hospital as a way to avoid the drudgery of a work farm. While in the hospital, Mac befriends a group of patient introverts and leads them in a revolt against Ratchet. Mac shows the inmates that life is for the living and where

action speaks louder than words. Unwilling to be changed by corrupt policies of “The Machine,” McMurphy intensifies his clashes in a series of events against Ratchet and her brutal methods of control in an inevitable and tragic collision course. Good Jan.1-31, 2015
