City Council Orders Final Plans for 2015 Street Project
Work on the demolition of the former Hot Spot gas and convenience store along Highway 169 northeast of Belle Plaine began yesterday (Jan. 6). The building will be razed and four underground tanks removed.
Mankato Company Buys Hot Spot Site, Plans to Raze Building
Although its plans are as-yet undetermined, a Mankato company has purchased the property that was home to the Hot Spot gas and convenience store on the southeast side of Highway 169 along Old Highway 169 Boulevard northeast of Belle Plaine. B & H Petroleum Equipment of Mankato purchased the 4.23acre property. After falling into foreclosure, it has sat idle since 2009, said Tom Evenson, a broker with Gonyea Land Company. Scott County issued a demoli-
tion permit for the site, a permit that will allow the building to be razed and the four underground tanks removed. The gas station was built in 1960, Evenson said. Ted Kornder, chairperson of the St. Lawrence Township Board of Supervisors, said B & H Petroleum indicated it will have the building razed and then reassess the property and its potential again later in the spring before moving forward with plans for the site. The property is zoned for re-
tail, office or industrial uses. St. Lawrence Township is concerned the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/ DOT) may want to close the access to the property from Highway 169’s southbound lanes or from people crossing the highway on Park Boulevard, a township road, Kornder said. The town board is working with representatives of Mn/ DOT, Kornder said, to keep the access to the property open as long as possible for B & H Petroleum.
Scott County Eyes New Alignment for CR 60 Through Blakeley Twp.
More than six months after storms washed away the walls of ravines supporting County Road 60 through Blakeley Township, the County Board has selected an option for repairing the roadway. In a workshop Tuesday morning after the Scott County
Board’s regular meeting, the last June 19. majority of commissioners in- County highway staff recomformally indicated preference CR 60 for a realignment of County Road 60, also known as Blake(continued on page 12) ley Trail, through the area where the ravines washed away following a torrential rainfall

The price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline dropped to below $2 in Belle Plaine last week and has stayed there since, at least as of late Tuesday. Kwik Trip, Cenex and Coborn’s were all selling a gallon of unleaded gasoline for $1.99.9. In early December, gas prices in Belle Plaine were already at their lowest in several years as Cenex, Coborn’s and Kwik Trip were all at $2.47.9, compared to $2.99 at the same time the previous year and well over $3 most of this year. The all-time high for gas in Belle Plaine was reached in May of 2013, when the price skyrocketed to $4.29.9 a gallon. Experts say lower crude oil prices are continuing to drive prices down, along with an abundant oil supply and the rising value of the U.S. dollar. On Monday, oil prices briefly fell below $50 a barrel.
It’s One of Those Weeks Belle Plaine kids, including Austin Denzer, had to withstand subzero temperatures both Monday and Tuesday during their brief but harsh expeditions to school. The coldest stretch of this winter season has been pretty uncomfortable for adults as well, and today (Wednesday) is expected to be the coldest day of the week, with wind chills approaching 30-40 degrees below zero during the morning hours. The weather is forecast to stay unseasonably cold the rest of the week before warming back up to the 20s next week. The average high for this week in January in the Twin Cities is 21 degrees, which since Sunday we have been nowhere near.
by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine City Council held its first meeting of 2015 Monday night, and shortly after swearing in Mayor Mike Pingalore and council members Paul Chard and Scott Schneider, all of whom won reelection last November, it was back to business. Included was public hearing No. 1 of the year, which involved the need or lack thereof for the city’s proposed 2015 street and utility improvement project. And after hearing from two affected property owners, the council unanimously okayed the preparation of the final plans for the nearly $1.3 million project. That action came after City Engineer Joe Duncan gave a presentation showing photos of cracked streets and decaying infrastructure in the project area, which consists of street reconstruction and utility improvements on Forest Street West between Grove Street and the railroad right-of-way, and Elk Street between Court and Forest streets (one block). Duncan said the total estimated cost of the project is $1,295,000, approximately one-third of which would be assessed to benefiting property owners. The city, which owns Fountain Park in the project area, would pick up the rest of the tab. City Administrator Holly Kreft reported that notices were mailed to four affected property owners, with the mobile home park being the majority landowner with six parcels with front footages ranging from 200 to 758 feet. RV Horizons Inc. of Cedaredge, Colo., purchased the mobile home park from Haefner Enterprises of Belle Plaine in 2013. “Although they are the landowner, staff recommends that if the project moves forward to construction, the city host a neighborhood meeting with the renters in the mobile home park to inform them of the project and potential impacts,” Kreft said. The only two affected property owners that spoke at the public hearing were Lee Stuewe (400 Forest Street West) and Stuart Haefner (415 Forest Street West). Both said the project seems to be overly expensive
and would like to see it lowered. Haefner also questioned the need for a sidewalk that’s proposed for one side of Forest Street. He added that many of the driveways and parking pads in the mobile home park are quite short and a sidewalk would make the parking situation all the more difficult. Council Member Paul Chard
agreed that it’s an expensive project, but added that because the city has been bidding its annual street projects earlier in recent years, the costs have often gone down, which he hopes will be the case again this year. Council Member Scott Sch-

New Home Permits Issued in Belle Plaine Rises to 18 According to Belle Plaine Building Official Scott McCarty, the city issued 18 permits for new single-family homes in 2014, which is 50 percent more than the 12 that were issued in 2013. In 2012, six were issued and in 2011 the total was four. The record year for Belle Plaine was 2001 when nearly 200 new home permits were issued. While Belle Plaine continues its “slow” climb back up the new housing ladder since the glory days of the early 2000s, residential construction activity in the Twin Cities region dropped slightly compared to 2013. According to data compiled by the Keystone Report for the Builders Association of the Twin Cities, there were 4,914 permits issued for a total of 10,093 units in 2014, compared to 10,303 units in 2013. Those unit numbers reflect both new homes and multi-family dwellings. “We had hoped to see a much stronger year in 2014 for single-family construction, but the numbers continue to show little improvement, if any,” said Shawn Nelson, Builders Association of the Twin Cities 2014 president and president of New Spaces. “Builders are feeling the full effects of the regulatory burdens that continue to raise the price of new homes in Minnesota.” It was no surprise that Minneapolis took the top spot with 2,312 permitted units in 2014. Maple Grove was next with 512 units, followed by Savage (481), Blaine (392) and Woodbury (382). Schmidt Building and Development of Belle Plaine accounted for seven of the 18
permits issued in Belle Plaine in 2014. Trinity Lutheran to Celebrate 70th Anniversary Trinity Lutheran School in Belle Plaine will celebrate 70 Years of Education at an open house Saturday, Jan. 10 from 10 a.m. to noon. The public is invited to attend the event, which will include family fun, games and prizes. Belle Plaine Mayor Mike Pingalore administered the oath of office to city council members Scott Schneider, left, and Paul Chard at the start of Monday night’s meeting. Seconds earlier, Pingalore received the oath of office from City Administrator Holly Kreft. Pingalore was unopposed in his bid for a second term in last November’s election. Chard and Schneider were also reelected by being the top two vote-getters for city council.

City Council Orders Final Plans for 2015 Street Project (continued from page 1)
Between the time I wrote this column and today when you are reading it, a big change has occurred for me. I have gone from being a librarian for the Belle Plaine Branch of the Scott County Library System to being a retired librarian and full time grandmother. It is a big step, but, it is one that I am happy and excited about. A little over 20 ago, I started as a part time assistant at the previous library building located over on 127 S. Cedar St. I assisted with a variety of library tasks ranging from returning books to the shelf, to working at the check-out desk. When Denise Gerdes resigned, I “temporarily” filled in for her... for the next 20. It has been a fun and exciting job. In that time, we moved to the current building. We have been through a bit of remodeling, repairing a leaky roof, replacing a falling ceiling and just lately the painting of a mural. It has not been a dull 20. I met a lot of new friends and lost a few along the way. At one point, I was forced to choose between quitting my job or joining a union. One cold snowy morning, I rode along in a Scott County snowplow for a couple hours. It has been a wide range of experiences for me. One of the most significant changes over the years is that the kids that I once read to at Storytime, are bringing their kids to Storytime. Wow. Over this time, I submitted over one thousand consecutive Belle Plaine Herald newspaper columns. The early ones were typewritten on paper, then later, submitted on floppy disk, briefly submitted on flash drive and now they are e-mailed to the Belle Plaine Herald office in the blink of an eye. I have learned a lot of new things and learned more computer operating than I had ever planned or imagined. I will miss a lot of things. Over the years, I met a lot of great people that work within the Scott County Library system. My contact was more through e-mail, telephone and notices over the computer. That is the nature of us being scattered through the various branches. I did get to know them at meetings and workshops as time went on. This includes librarians, administrators, delivery people, and the magical computer people that maintain a lot of stuff that we depend on. The people that use the library will be missed as well. I have met a lot of interesting and friendly people across the desk. It was an opportunity to meet people that is hard to get elsewhere. I plan to spend more time with my grandkids. Old hobbies, like sewing, gardening, and photo collections, will get dusted off now that I have more time. It is time to do the many things that I have kept putting off while working and raising a family. I am excited. However, if I do get bored, I do know where to go to get a good book. I want to, I need to, acknowledge everybody that has crossed my path in this last 20 years. I cannot name everybody without taking up too much space and running the risk or missing somebody
neider questioned the need for keeping the street width 40 feet since the volume of traffic there is not as high as other area of town with 40-foot-wide streets. He said reducing the street width would leave more room for driveways and sidewalks. Duncan and the council indicated they will take Monday’s feedback into consideration before finishing the final plans. The topic will be addressed at an upcoming public works committee meeting. It’s possible the bids for the project could be awarded by the council in April and construction could start in May. An assessment public hearing would be held later in the year when the work is almost complete and the final costs are known. In other business Monday night, the council unanimously authorized the city engineering firm of Bolton and Menk to complete phase two of the city’s wellhead protection plan at a cost not to exceed $28,700. The cost of the work will come from the city’s water fund. Last August, the council authorized completion of phase one of the plan, the purpose of which is to provide the statemandated processes and procedures to help protect the city’s drinking water. *Unanimously reappointed Jacqueline Hillstrom as manager of the Belle Plaine Municipal Swimming Pool for the 2015 season. She will be placed at step 4 of the public Works I pay scale, which is $20.77 per hour. She will work part-time until shortly before the pool opens, after which time she will be full-time until it closes. *Unanimously appointed Olivia Turmes, Aiden Ladd and Troy Gudmonson as part-time ice rink attendants for the winter season. They will each receive $8 per hour. *Unanimously approved a resolution setting the retiree monthly insurance benefit for 2015 for qualifying city retirees at $600 per month, which is the same amount it has been since 2005. The city offers qualifying retirees a monthly health insurance premium. The employee must be employed a minimum of 20 continuous years with the city of Belle Plaine and be considered fully eligible to receive retirement benefits under Social Security and the Public Employees Retirement Association. Although there is no one receiving a monthly retirement plan from the city at this time, there are currently a couple of employees who would qualify when they retire. Due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday on Jan. 19, the next regular meeting of the Belle Plaine City Council is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20 in the City Hall building at 218 North Meridian Street downtown.
in particular. You made my job a good one. My last project is to get the 2015 Adult “Winter Jacket” program setup and running, because it started January 2 and goes until February 28. All one needs to do is pick up a book review, read a book and return the review. One will then receive a book bag and a free book and a chance to win a mug and the Grand Prize: A Blanket made by the Stelten Girls from the Belle Plaine Friends of the Library. Don’t Forget the January Friends of the Library Used Book Sale Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Jan. 15, 16 17 during open library hours. Storytime will start up again in February 2015. I might just bring my grandkids. The Belle Plaine Book Club is reading “The Tiger’s Wife” by Tea Obreht. They will meet on Thursday, Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. If you would like to join the discussion, check out a book at the desk. I might be there too. Cologne Appoints Don Meyer to Fill Open City Council Seat Williams, Szaroletta Sworn-in to City Council
With an open seat to fill after a council member was elected mayor, the Cologne City Council welcomed a new councilor and appointed an experienced one in its first meeting of 2015. Monday, Scott Williams was sworn-in as the city’s mayor. Kyle Evenski and Carol Szaroletta also took the oath as council members. The council appointed former Councilor Don Meyer to fill the last two years of the term Williams won in 2012. Meyer finished third in the race for two city council seats. He was the lone applicant for the seat. Nominating him to fill the open position, Szaroletta, Evenski and Williams lauded Meyer’s experience on the city council. “He’s been with us for 12-plus years, through thick-and-thin. I think that speaks volumes for what he’s done for the community over the years,” Evenski said. Meyer said he wants to continue serving the community. He’s interested in seeing Cologne continue to grow residentially and diversify its tax base by bringing more businesses to the city.
After being approved to fill the final two years of the four-year councilor position Scott Williams won two years ago (before becoming Cologne’s mayor), Don Meyer took the oath of office Monday night at Cologne City Hall. “That’ll help us keep taxes down,” Meyer said. Because there is just under two years left on Williams’ term, the city council had the option of appointment rather than holding a special election. City staff published notice of the open seat in the city’s newsletter and sent blanket e-mails to residents. In other action at its Jan. 5 meeting, the Cologne City Council: • Paid bills totaling $659,200.92. • Accepted the low bid $23,531.20 from Schneider Excavating & Grading of Nor-
wood Young America for removing sediments from two ponds in Benton Creek Estates development, just northwest of Meadow Street and Gold Nugget Drive. During heavy rainfalls, the ponds filled and over flown into a resident’s backyard. The work is scheduled for completion by the spring. The project is below the engineer’s estimate of $30,100. • Appointed council members to various committees. • Approved a 2015 schedule of fees for city services. • Approved signatures for city accounts at KleinBank, Security Bank and Trust, and Citizens State Bank.

Thirty Years Ago This Week
Oath of Office Belle Plaine City Administrator Dave Unmacht administered the oath of office on Jan. 7, 1985 to returning Mayor Fran Schuman and two new city council members – Ivan Otto and Dave Edberg. A Sunday trip to pick up a new car ended in tragedy when Mildred Holste, 74, of Belle Plaine, was killed in a one-car accident in Lac qui Parle County, one mile south of Dawson on Highway 212. A passenger in the vehicle, Elsie Stoppelmann, received a broken wrist and bruises. Miss Holste had driven to Watertown, S.D., where she took delivery of a new 1985 Dodge Charger. After exchanging vehicles, the women started on their return trip. The first steps toward the development of a program that emphasizes parents and young children learning together was taken that Monday night. The Belle Plaine School Board entered into an agreement with the Carver-Scott Cooperative of Chaska for the development of a program here in Early Childhood and Family Education. Nancy Kelly of New Prague, project coordinator, said the program would get underway here on Jan. 24 with a class for parents and children (ages 2 and 3) at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Belle Plaine Superintendent of Schools John Bartholow presented a report on the status of the district’s cash flow at a meeting of the school board that Monday night. “We are in no great danger of falling behind in cash flow,” he said, “and as a result I feel we will not have to borrow money to keep the schools running.” John F. Casey of Credit River Township was sworn into his first term on the Scott County Board that Tuesday. Dick Mertz

There still was no sleighing and everyone was wishing for it. During the preceding year, there were 41 births in the borough of Belle Plaine, a figure never before equalled. For payment of taxes, county treasurers in this area made dates in all the towns in the county, spending two days in each one, for convenience of those making payments. The Independent Foresters put on a banquet at the Belle Plaine Hotel, 45 couples present, and was said to have been the most elaborate spread ever attempted here. J.K. Edelman operated a general store here, which he called “The Bankrupt Store.”

Year in Review (continued from page 2)
Sept. 15 for Belle Plaine’s new Archery Range. Mayor Mike Pingalore thanked the Archery Range Subcommittee, which with the park board, spearheaded the development of the park. Also acknowledged was Belle Plaine High School student Wyatt Herrmann, who oversaw the building of the target frames as part of his Eagle Scout project with the Belle Plaine Boy Scouts. *A routine meeting of the Belle Plaine School Board got off to a rocky start on Sept. 22 when Board Member Joe Vandermark criticized the school district in general for not following a policy prohibiting the promotion of school-associated organizations and Superintendent Kelly Smith specifically
for staff participation meetings of an unapproved group. Without an advance heads-up to his fellow directors or Smith, Vandermark read a two-page statement criticizing the district for promoting the GayStraight Alliance club (GSA) at Belle Plaine Junior-Senior High School. Vandermark said several families are concerned the school announces the holding of GSA club meetings during non-classroom time and that Smith and a member of the school staff participated in at least one of the meetings last spring at a time when state lawmakers were discussing an antibullying bill. The 2014 Year in Review will conclude next Wednesday with a recap of October, November and December.

The proceeds went to St. Wenceslaus School. Many little student boys and girls helped clean tables and carry food and they did a good job. Union Hill Bar and Grill had a huge crowd on New Year’s Day afternoon and evening when the Charlie Sticha Band from Lonsdale played there for dancing. The food menu included pork, dumplings and sauerkraut which was a huge hit. Humor Corner: Ole was walking downtown when he encountered his old friend Lars. Lars made some comments on his long suffer-

Our sympathies to Marilyn and their family. Prayers of comfort and good thoughts for Judy Savage Morrison, Donnie’s wife and Shannon and Steven’s Mom. The Savages and Jack Burns’s crew rode the same school bus together. A couple years older, Judy was always one of this writer’s role models. She followed rules, spoke in quieter tones, was comfortable to be with and is a genuinely good person. Felt a kinship with Judy, our Dads rode to work together at Schiely’s Rock Quarry in the 60’s. For a spell, we heard lots of Leo Savage stories at the supper table. Judy is presently at Abbott traveling her journey over bumps and hurdles, “in good spirits” and taking it all in stride. Derrynane Juniors 4-H club will host a pancake breakfast at St. Mary’s in Le Center January 18. Mass at St. Thomas, then join St. Thomas folks and St.Thomas’s finest 4-H-ers for pancakes! That’s a plan. Ryan and Dana hosted a New Year’s Day celebration after the Gophers game at their Union Hill Bar and Grill. Delicious dumplings, 350 were made and were served with pork and sauerkraut. The Charlie Sticha Band entertained. The place was hopping! St.Thomas folks attended. James Oak, Brent and Mark O’Connell make up a snowmobile racing team “Irish Racing”. They’re competitive, having fun and pretty good luck. James brought home a 2nd and a 1st place in the Grass Root League at Elk River! Sponsoring the lads are Oak Farms, O’Connell Oil, Belle Plaine Motor Sports, and Woody’s Traction! The honorable Jerry Retka celebrated with his family his birthday number 83. Brian, LuAnn, Randy Guertin and Lyndsey and Lacey Walerius joined other board members of the Le Sueur Pioneer Power Association for supper at Kokomo’s in
Cleveland. Some folks bellylaughed through extremely humorous Alphonse and Mick Gill stories. This writer should have been taking notes. The St. Thomas Sportsman’s Association will be celebrating 50 years in 2018. Seems like a long time away but folks know how quickly time has passed. Jason Retka is in the process of putting a history book together and is looking for pictures and stories from all generations of Sportsmen, from its founding in 1968 to the present. Anything and everything is of historical significance. Pictures and stories would be appreciated. Contact Jason Retka. If he set up a recorder at the Eyeball? But we probably couldn’t use those stories. Schools for Equity in Education (SEE) has released its platform for the 2015 Legislative Session and the platform advocates four primary planks promoting adequate and equitable education funding for students throughout Minnesota. "We believe that all Minnesota students deserve a quality education. ", said SEE President Cathy Thom, a member of the Waconia School Board. "Our goal is to make sure that educational opportunities for our children do not vary simply because of their zip code." In the 2015 platform, SEE strongly asserts that: • All school districts must have the ability to adequately maintain their school facilities. • State funding must be adjusted to provide effective and equitable assistance to individual low income, special education, and non-English speaking students while stagnated revenue for career and technical education programs needs to be increased. • The fundamental per pupil basic formula must keep up with inflation to provide stability in education funding. • Additional property tax relief is needed for taxpayers in low property wealth school districts where the tax burden is high to support local school levies. "The organization has put together a comprehensive platform and we are looking at some areas of funding we haven't looked at that closely in the past," said SEE Executive Director Brad Lundell."There is a huge disparity among school districts in their ability to maintain their facilities and that must be addressed." The current Alternative Facilities Program allows some school districts to implement a long-range facility maintenance plan to care for their school buildings and grounds. SEE wants the Alternative Facilities Program expanded to include all school districts. The average amount of maintenance funding in current participating school districts equals $510 per student while the many districts without the Alternative Facilities Program average only $212 per student. This disparity in available maintenance funding has often delayed or prevented needed projects until emergencies arise and costs multiply. Lundell also pointed to formula adjustments needed to promote the organization's commitment to giving every student in Minnesota access to high-quality educational opportunities. "We will always put per pupil basic formula funding and property tax fairness at the center of our agenda," Lundell stated, "but the state formulas that provide assistance to low-income students don't treat students in SEE districts equitably. Our districts and the business community also want expanded opportunities for students interested in career and technical education and that requires more resources." The Belle Plaine school district is a member of SEE and shares the organization's mission. “The SEE organization’s legislative priorities align very well with the needs of our school districtâ€?, stated Superintendent Smith. “Equal access to revenue for facilities is critical to our district.â€? SEE is a 58 member association of school districts located throughout Minnesota that represents approximately one-third of the students in Minnesota. Established in 1979, SEE has worked to promote adequate and equitable funding with a focus on the need for fairness for property taxpayers. For more information visit www.schoolsforequity.org. It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. Residents Once Again Say One High School in Shakopee is Enough A second survey of voters in the Shakopee School District seem to make it clear – Shakopee wants to be a one high school suburb. A second appraisal of voters in Scott County’s largest school district indicates expanding the existing high school capacity from 1,600 to 3,200 students is the most acceptable way to meet the Shakopee School District’s looming secondary school space needs. Forty-two percent of the voters surveyed favored that idea of one high school among the options presented during a recent telephone survey of 409 residents of the district. The other options offered to survey participants included building a new high school for 3,200 students on a different site, a second high school for 1,600 students on a different

site with the same school nickname (Sabers) and identity and a second high school for 1,600 with the same nickname and identity. Just over 17 percent thought building a new high school for 3,200 students was the best idea, the Shakopee Valley News recently reported. Fifteen percent of the respondents liked the idea of a second campus for a 1,600-student high school with the same nickname, mascot and identity. The survey indicated 14.7 percent of the respondents liked the idea of a second campus with a different mascot and identity. Rod Thompson, the district’s superintendent, said the results of the survey are in line with the survey the district performed in October and conversations with community members. The district’s school board will

use the information to formulate a board question by February in order to hold a referendum on a second high school in May. As for paying for school expansion, 72 percent of survey respondents said they would support a bond referendum if the tax impact were $10 a month. Just over half – 52.1 percent – said they would support the idea of the impact added $19 a month to the district’s share of the tax bill. Last spring, Shakopee School District voters nixed an $89 million bond referendum -- $78 million of which was intended for a second high school – by a 3,270 to 1,947 vote (62.7 percent against, 37.3 percent in favor).
Farm Loan Programs From Dakota/Washington/ Scott County FSA Office Area farmers are encouraged to address their credit needs early. FSA’s objective is to provide assistance where possible for our existing FSA farm loan customers, as well as other potential customers who may be in need of our help this year. It also includes vehicles for the sheriff’s office and emergency management and dashboard cameras for deputies. its intersection with Highway 169, individually, the Le Sueur News-Herald recently reported. Smaller projects planned for this year also include paving work on county roads 104 and 107. The county plans to spend about $22.97 million in 2015 – most of it at the junction of County Roads 28 and Highway 169. Ten-year bonds will pay for the majority of the project. Issued debt, property taxes and state aid money will also be used to fund the projects and safety-enhancing purchases Le Sueur County approves. Commissioners unanimously approved the plan Dec. 23. But they will still address each project, and the funding for it.

Scott West Captures Rumble on the Red The Scott West wrestling team rang in the New Year by traveling to Fargo, N.D., for the ninth annual Rumble on the Red Championships that were held Friday and Saturday. The Panthers went into the Fargodome and wrestled their way to their third Rumble on the Red Championship team title in five years.
Scott West won its first Rumble team championship in December of 2010 and followed that up with a repeat performance in December of 2011. It was not easy for Scott West to win the event as 62 teams representing seven states (Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, New Mexico, Montana and Wyoming)
converged on the Fargodome for the tournament. It was the team from Sidney, Mont., that challenged the Panthers all the way as the Eagles soared into the final round of place match wrestling with a 5.5 team point lead after having advanced three of their wrestlers to the championship finals and two others into the consolation third-place matches.
Among those leading the final round comeback for Scott West was Parker Huss as the sophomore 106-pounder capped his solid tournament with an exciting 3-1 overtime win over Annandale-Maple Lake’s #3-rated junior Holden Youngs. In the overtime, it was all Huss as

Tigers Drop Both Games at NYA by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School girls’ basketball team absorbed two defeats at last week’s holiday tournament in Norwood Young America, falling to Mound Westonka 53-43 on Monday and New Ulm 59-43 on Tuesday. Host NYA won the tournament with a convincing 52-19 victory over Mound Westonka in last Tuesday’s championship game. The Tigers, 0-1 in the Minnesota River Conference, 2-6 overall, will host Tri-City United in a MRC contest 7:30 p.m. this Friday. They will host St. Peter in a nonconference game 2 p.m. this Saturday. That game will be followed at 4 p.m. by the Belle Plaine boys’ team also taking on St. Peter. The Belle Plaine girls’ and boys’ teams will be part of another doubleheader next Tuesday at Jordan. The girls will tip off at 6 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m. Mound-W 53, Tigers 43 The Tigers lost to Mound Westonka 53-43 at last Monday’s holiday tournament in Norwood Young America. The Tigers, who trailed 29-16 at halftime, were led by Ireland Lambrecht and Mariena Hayden with 15 points apiece. New Ulm 59, Tigers 43 New Ulm grabbed an early lead and led by 13 points at halftime on it’s way to a 16point victory in last Tuesday’s third-place game at Norwood Young America. The Tigers managed to close to within six points before the Eagles pulled away again. Hayden had 17 points and 10 rebounds for Belle Plaine, while Torrie Kellogg and Alissa Schultz pitched in 10 and seven points, respectively. “New Ulm is a very skilled team that shot the ball well. That was basically the difference,” said Belle Plaine coach Randy Carlson. “To beat good teams, we are going to need to have people score more consistently. The name of the game is making baskets and we are improving there a lot. We need to keep working hard and good things will happen.”
Tigers Open New Year With Loss by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School boys’ basketball team played its first game in 17 days Monday night and dropped a nonconference game to Faribault Bethlehem Academy 68-63. Also scoring for Belle Plaine were Taylor Lenz (8), Nathan Herman (7), Brandon Schulz (3), Taylor Ponath (2), Joe Hankins (2), Kincade Retzer (1) and Derek Guscette (1). Faribault Bethlehem Academy’s Peter Clark had a gamehigh 30 points. “We played a good game, especially after a two-week break between games,” said Tigers coach John Wellner. “It took us a little while to solve their zone. We haven’t seen a traditional 2-3 zone yet this year. Once we got the ball into the middle, it opened things up and we were able to score a little bit better. Our goal this year is to improve everyday and get better in every game. We are on track and just need to keep focusing on the little improvements and soon the wins will take care of themselves.”
