A Lifetime of Memories at Belle Plaine’s Bar-B-Q Days Mary and John Stier Will Lead Parade

They have been around as long as Bar-B-Q Days, Belle Plaine’s summer festival. Mary and John Stier have a lifetime of memories from Bar-B-Q Days of years gone by, where they volunteered their time while visiting with friends and neighbors. Saturday (July 15, noon), the couple will be center stage as grand marshals of the 59th Annual Bar-B-Q Days Parade. The parade runs from the Belle Plaine Fire Station west on Main Street to West Street. Born the spring of 1959, the year after the first Bar-B-Q Days, Mary has been at every Bar-B-Q Days celebration since she was born except one. John, three years her elder, has seen the community festival annually since he was a child. The two grew up a block or so apart on Park and Willow streets. Next month, they’ll celebrate their 40th anniversary. “We played in the same sandbox,” Mary said. As children, they were in the festival’s kiddie parades each year. They also regularly attended the community parade and the poolside shows. When Mary’s father arranged for divers from ValleyFair to dive from a 90-foot diving platform, John recalls a 10-foot ladder being mounted atop a 80-foot tall scaffold. “That was pretty crazy,” John said. “That was one of those things I don’t think they’d allow today.” The Stiers are co-owners of Stier Transportation, the company that buses children to school and activities. Mary and John will ride in the parade aboard an open Jeep driven by their son, Ben. He and his family live here in town. Their oth-

Siemon Family Takes Fond Bar-B-Q Days, 2017 Memories From Dealership A Weekend of Fun in Belle Plaine Begins Friday

Belle Plaine’s contribution to the schedule of summer community festivals begins Friday. The start of Bar-B-Q Days Friday (July 14) at Union Square Park will mark three days of fun in town. Most food and beverages will cost the same as last year, including the festival’s namesake sandwich at $3.50. The presliced meat will again be from Coborn’s Grocery Store. The beer garden will feature Miller Lite (strong), which remains $3 for a 14-ounce cup and $12 for pitchers ($10 refill). Also on sale will be Blakeley brewed u4ic beer, plus Sharps, Summer Shandy, Redd’s Apple Ale, Mike’s Hard Cranberry, and Henry’s Hard Orange Soda, all of which cost $4 a glass. Specials in the beer garden ($1 off cups and $2 off pitchers) will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday

and from 3-5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. All profits from Bar-B-Q Days are used for community projects. For more information on this weekend’s festivities, e-mail the Belle Plaine Festival and Events office -- belleplainefestivals@gmail.com -- or call 952-873-0855.

They look back over 53 years of ownership, friendships and business relationships with area farmers. Monday (July 10), the Siemon family of Belle Plaine saw its association with the implement dealership come to an end. Kibble Equipment, a dealership based in southwestern Minnesota and South Dakota, formally acquired Ag. Power Enterprises. The agreement completed about 18 months of negotiations. Terry Siemon, the last of the family to own at least a portion of the dealership, worked his last day at the business his father, Marty, started in the mid-1960s in a shed on the south side of the intersection of

Highway 169 and County Road 3. Terry’s son will remain at the dealership as a sales representative. “It was a sad day,” Siemon said. The previous week, he began trying to organize the personal keepsakes collected over two generations of family ownership. “It’s going to be a change for me and the rest of my family. This has been home for a long time.” Terry Siemon was one of several partners and owned 15 percent of the business after his brother, Keith, sold him his share of the business in 2014. The owners unanimously agreed to accept Kibble Equipment’s offer.

“It had to happen,” he said of the sale. Mergers and acquisitions in the world of implement dealerships are nothing new. Siemon Implement merged with Ag. Power in 2007. Siemon knew the acquisition by Kibble meant it was time for him to leave. “They didn’t have to say anything. I just knew. It’s in everyone’s best interest,” he said. “They’re going to do things their way. They are very successful and that works for them.” For Terry Siemon, the acquisition represents a change in life

Rachael Eliason Has Enjoyed Her Year as Miss Belle Plaine When she thinks of the pluses and the minuses of spending the year as Miss Belle Plaine, Rachael Eliason has no doubt the positives outweigh the hurdles. It’s been a great year, and she’s ready to pass the crown on to her successor. Eliason, the daughter of Keren and Michael Eliason, is ready to head off to college in Sioux Falls, S.D. and begin her studies in social work. Sunday (July 16), she’ll crown the next Miss Belle Plaine at the coronation in the junior-senior high school’s south gymnasium. Eliason recalls the Sunday afternoon of Bar-B-Q Days 2016 awaiting McKenzie Koepp to crown her successor. She admits to being “oblivious” to the expectations and the schedule Miss Belle Plaine faced. “I was a little nervous, excited,” Eliason said. “I was just enjoying the speeches and everybody being there.” Being crowned Miss Belle Plaine immediately changed her senior year. Eliason’s schedule was filled with community parades where she and the rest of the court – First Princess Makayla Anderson, Second Princess Alyssa Neisen and Miss Congeniality Hailey Witt -- appeared at various events. They have been to 15 parades since the coronation last July, traveling from Montgomery for Kolacky Days to Anoka for its Halloween celebration. The other festivals included Lonsdale, Jordan, Carver, Le Sueur, Norwood Young America, and Henderson. “It was actually really cool, to be able to walk around and see the other royalty,” she said. “I learned a lot about the other communities.”

and lifestyle. It also means for the first time since he left college after a year, Siemon needs to look for a job. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1980 and left for college. Siemon didn’t expect to come back to Belle Plaine. A year later, he came home after learning he didn’t like college.

A Short Resume

“I need something to do. This is the only job I’ve ever had. My resume is pretty short,” he said, a smile spreading across his face. “Maybe I’ll drive a truck or go work for a farmer.” He left the dealership Friday (July 7) uncertain of what the

future holds. Siemon is looking for something simple. He has no interest in sitting in an office for eight hours a day. Having dealt with some health challenges the past few years, Siemon wants to enjoy a simple, stress-free life. Marty worked at the dealership until 1991. His late-wife, Irma, worked as a bookkeeper for several years. Marty Siemon moved the dealership from County Road 3 north to its current location in 1970. The current facility has been expanded. Storage space was added in 1978, but it was converted to repair shop space. Additional offices for sales representatives were added to the front of the building in 1980. His primary concerns are customers he has worked with for years and the future of the employees, longtime dedicated people like Jerome Flaherty, a sales representative who has been with the implement dealership since 1979. “He is the hardest working man you’ll ever meet,” the elder Siemon said. “He’d work a full day and then be down in Iowa looking at a piece of equipment to trade in. He’d do anything to help out a customer.”

(continued from page 1) The time spent with children is right in Eliason’s wheelhouse. She plans to study social work in college and wants to be a children’s advocate. “I absolutely love being around little kids,” Eliason said. “It was challenging but very rewarding.” Spending time with children and meeting people from other communities was the best part of the year as Miss Belle

Plaine, she said. But it was a commitment that challenged her schedule. Eliason was a team captain on the BPHS Explosion Dance Team and there were times when the schedules unavoidably overlapped. She missed a few competitions and performances during halftime of home basketball games. “It was tough missing events, but my teammates were very

supportive,” Eliason said. Sunday, Eliason has the privilege of crowning her successor. She would encourage the next Miss Belle Plaine to enjoy the year to come, take advantage of all the opportunities that are available, and take lots of pictures. “My scrapbook is 30 pages and I’m using only about half of the pictures I took,” she said.

Farmers’ Market Corner The Belle Plaine Farmers’ Market runs Wednesdays, 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. (rain or shine) through October 11 at Court Square Park, 410 Cedar Street N. As always, our local vendors will be on-site today (July 12) with farm fresh eggs, jams, jellies, and baked goods. Handmade crafts, jewelry, rugs, and towels continue to be popular items. We are now beginning to see some fresh local produce at the market, including fresh lettuce, zucchini and cucumbers. Also, we are currently offering locally produced maple syrup and honey, while supplies are

available. Vendors are welcome to sell their homemade or homegrown items at the farmers’ market. New vendors are always welcome, at a weekly rate of $5. Food trucks will be on-site, so why not bring the family down for a little shopping and a bite to eat. What a great time to socialize with growers, vendors, and your fellow community members. tions referenced in the clues. Ironically, a scheduled football camp would have likely required the sled be moved this coming week. The discovery of the medallion beneath it saved the folks running the medallion hunt from some seeking a change in the camp’s schedule to preserve the medallion’s location. The area around the blocking sled and the ďŹ elds behind the elementary school were not the ďŹ rst part of town the quintet had searched for the medallion. The group Led by the elder Schultz and his mom, Sue, had checked areas around the bowling alley, Belle Plaine Block & Tile, CornerStone Bank, Belle Plaine Co-op Tire, and along Park Street. “There were some areas over there we thought might be hot,â€? Pat Schultz said. They had sought the counsel of Bill Kruschke, a proven medallion sleuth. The second clue referenced the six stations of the blocking sled. The previous clue pointed to “the R with the star.â€? Once he recognized the logo, Hoff knew where to look around the third blocking station. The commotion, along with stiing heat and humidity Thursday (July 6), brought Schultz’s meticulously choreographed practice to a halt as CeCe, the coach and players celebrated Hoff’s discovery. Erik isn’t sure what he’ll do with the medallion before collecting the prize – $100 Belle Plaine Bucks. He likes the idea of making the medallion into a necklace and wearing it to the Bar-B-Q Days Parade, just as Luke Schultz did with a St. Patrick’s Day medallion he found.

Erik noticed the logo on the blocking sled behind a storage garage adjacent to Field No. 2 behind ChatďŹ eld Elementary School. The logo – a star in a capital R for Rogers Athletics Company – was referenced in one of the two clues published the past couple weeks. A few minutes later, the Belle Plaine 8-year-old had unearthed the medallion from beneath the blocking sled. It’s the third consecutive medallion -- Bar-B-Q Days, the St. Patrick’s Day this spring medallion and last fall’s Harvest Medallion -- a member of the Schultz team found. “They’re getting spoiled,â€? the T-ball coach said.

She has participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life annually since 2002. Her family has lost beloved members to the disease while others members celebrate as survivors. Belle Plaine’s Sarah Riga can’t imagine missing the annual fund-raiser Friday evening (July 14) in Shakopee’s Lions Park. Her grandmother, Nellie (Hennen) Wick, lost her ďŹ ght with the disease in 2004. Her grandfather, P.H. Wick, has enjoyed survivorship for 27 years. An aunt is also a survivor, but Riga has lost friends and coworkers. She feels a need to do something to help the effort to support research for a cure and those who care for cancer patients. “Cancer touches everybody in one way or another,â€? she said. “You hope someday they get to the point where they have a cure.â€? The opening ceremony for the 20th annual Scott County Relay for Life is at 6 p.m., immediately followed by the survivor lap. The luminary ceremony is at 9:45 p.m. The schedule of events includes an array of entertainment throughout the night, including a demonstration by Metropolitan Dance, Zumba, games and activities for children, and a DJ. BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA

Thirty Years Ago This Week injured. Ferdinand Meyer, native of New Prague and retired Jordan lumberman, died at the age of 79. Miss Helen Holste, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernst Holste of Norwood, formerly of Belle Plaine, became the bride of Ernest W. Eickelberg, teacher and golf instructor at the junior high school in Winter Haven, Florida. Paul O’Connell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph O’Connell of St. Thomas, and Miss Marion Page, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Tracy S. Page of Minneapolis, were married at St. Helena’s Church, Minneapolis. Miss Joan Goetz, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence W. Goetz, became the bride of Earl Schmitt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Schmitt.

Volunteers, friends, relatives and members from the Gotha Go-Getters 4-H Club pushed wheelchairs and escorted residents from the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home on their annual Wheelchair Hike from the home to Trinity Lutheran Church. At the church, Lutheran Home residents enjoyed coffee and refreshments sponsored by the Trinity Ladies Aid group.

(1987) Bill and Clarice Steffen, Belle Plaine residents for 32 years and owners of Steffen’s Hardware, were chosen as grand marshals of the 29th annual Bar-B-Q Days parade. Joe Madlo, who farmed southwest of Belle Plaine in Blakeley Township, and his son, Dale, were seriously injured on their farm Monday afternoon, July 13, when a tractor rolled over them. Dale Madlo suffered a badly bruised leg, and his father broke his pelvis and received internal injuries. After being closed for nearly two months because of a fire which damaged the bowling lanes, Belle Plaine Borough Bowl – including the restaurant, bar, and mini-golf course – reopened on Wednesday, July 15. The bowling lanes were expected to be repaired in time for league bowling at the end of August. The Centel Telephone officials mailed out a second round of ballots to rural customers’ homes and businesses in Belle Plaine, regarding a proposed change in service and in rates. The first survey in February determined the majority wanted one-party or two-party service instead of four-party. Under the proposed rates, a two-party line for customers seven miles or more out of town would be $13.95, and a private line would be only $5.95 over what fourparty line customers currently paid at $8.25. At the Belle Plaine School Board’s organizational meeting Monday night, July 13, Roger Delgehausen was elected to another term as chairman, Patricia Schwartz as clerk, and Donald Koepp as treasurer. It was also determined to keep the salary of school board members the same, at $500 per year, plus $25 for a special meeting. A total of 33 recent BPHS graduates were vying for the title of Miss Belle Plaine. Reigning royalty for the 1987 Bar-B-Q Days included Lisa Nelsen as queen, Molly Daly as first princess, Toni Burns as second princess, and Ann Klehr as Miss Congeniality. Kathleen Morris, former Scott County Attorney, opened a private law office in Shakopee on Monday, July 13, along with Miriam Wolf, who served as an assistant county attorney for eight years. Following the much-publicized child sex abuse cases in Jordan, the lawsuits that followed, and her de-

feat in her bid for another term as Scott County Attorney to James Terwedo of New Prague, Morris planned to practice general law, including family matters such as guardianship, wills, divorce, and custody. The Belle Plaine School Board decided to take no action in enrolling the district in Minnesota’s new open enrollment program, which allowed students to chose what school district they attend. In addition to Belle Plaine, districts saying no to the program in its first year were Jordan, New Prague, Shakopee, Henderson, Norwood-Young America, and Gibbon-FairfaxWinthrop. However, Chaska, Minnetonka, Arlington-Green Isle, and Gaylord districts said yes to the program. The Department of Natural Resources asked landowners to avoid mowing or otherwise disturbing vegetation along Minnesota roads and highways from late April through early August. Roadside habitat during the summer nesting season was particularly important for pheasants, gray partridge, rabbits, and grassland songbirds. If necessary, landowners could use spot mowing or spraying to control vegetation where drifting snow, noxious weeks, or driver vision and safety might be problems. Chad Kroells, 12-year-old son of Chuck and Barb Kroells, won a four-day, three-night, all expenses paid trip for five to Wisconsin Dells, as part of the Red Owl’s “Kidsweek” coloring contest. Over 300 grocery stores in the upper Midwest participated in the 17th annual promotion. Beth Bush McLaughlin, daughter of John and Marge Bush who were former members of the Belle Plaine school faculty, became the first female member admitted to the Chaska Kiwanis Club. Virginia Glynn, a junior at Belle Plaine High School, received the 1987 Richard G. Drew Creativity Award from 3M. Honoring those who demonstrated creative flair and persistence in technical or scientific projects, the award was named for the inventor of the first Scotch brand tapes.

east of Belle Plaine on Highway 169. Their baby was thrown from the car but escaped serious injury. Henderson was to hold it traditional Sauerkraut Festival with carnival attractions, parade, speakers, contest, queen coronation, and participation by a lot of bands. Six St. Paul youths attempted to enter the farm home of Wallace Solheid, located six miles west of New Prague. Mrs. Solheid surprised them in the act. The youths fled on foot into the woods and were later captured. Mrs. Nell Irwin reopened her home in Belle Plaine after nearly a year’s sojourn in California with her daughter, Mrs. Barnard, at Pomono. The Belle Plaine Fire Department was largely represented at the funeral in Jordan of fellow fireman Edward Strait, who died at age 59. William Dean died unexpectedly following a stroke. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Dean. Burglars broke into the office of the Co-op Oil Company at New Prague, cracked open two safes, and stole $966.46 in cash and checks. At East Union Lutheran Church took place funeral services for John E. Nord, 84, a pioneer resident of that community. Elmer F. Kelm, well-known Carver County banker, died at St. Mary’s Hospital, Minneapolis, at the age of 57. It was a hot muggy night so the Walter Schultz family decided to sleep in the living room. At 1:20 a.m. their slumber was interrupted by a big roar, followed by the crash of plaster all around and on top of them. The entire living room ceiling plaster had plummeted to the floor. Luckily, no one was seriously

(1927) There were four candidates for the two vacancies on the school board. Cast were 256 ballots; H. B. Conlon and Jos. Kulisheck were elected. Shocks of golden grain were dotting the farmland. Rye and winter wheat had ripened fast. The residence of the Krueger estate on East Main Street was purchased by Mrs. Sarah Meierbachtol of Blakeley. Fred J. Heiland of the Belle Plaine Creamery left on a vacation trip to New York with plans to contact his marketing connections in that city. The trip was made over the Great Lakes. John Bergman, 53, died, leaving his wife and eleven children. Born in the Washington Lake Township, he farmed at Gotha and in Tyrone and Belle Plaine townships. Funeral services were held from St. John’s Lutheran Church. Our liveliest old man, Bernard Stradcutter, celebrated his 88th birthday with a party at the home of his son, Joe. Scott County Commissioners voted a tax levy of $55,000 for general revenue, $90,000 for roads, and $7,000 for bonds. At East Union Church took place the funeral of Mrs. Mathilda Leonard, nee Carlson, who died at her home in Carver. She was born in East Union in 1858. A number of St. Thomas folks attended the marriage at Kilkenny of their relative, Marcella O’Malley, who married Edward Claffy. The James Fogartys were back from Fairmont, N. D., and reported their 760-acre farm was growing a wonderful crop. The remains of Mrs. Nora Sullivan were brought here from St. Paul for burial in Sacred Heart Cemetery beside the grave of her husband who preceded her in death by 30 years. The tragic event of the week was the instant death of Dr. G. R. Moloney in a traffic accident. As he and his wife drove their car onto the highway at the

Scott County Board made a tax levy of $23,000, of which $3,000 was for roads. After an absence of ten years, R. H. Brown was back for a visit. He used to run a cigar factory here and in quitting left for New York. Reports of rust and damage by cinch bugs sent the wheat market up, rising 72 cents in the local market.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, Mosquitoes & Minnows: Anywhere there is open water the DNR Fisheries have advised a solution to help out. Adding fat head minnows (from a live bait store) to sloughs or dugout ponds is a solution to control-

ling mosquito larvae. They supposedly leave tadpoles of frogs, toads and salamanders while eating the larvae of the blood suckers. It’s a cheap, easy solution and adds to the food chain. Warren Vogt, Blakeley Township

Ask A Trooper by Sgt. Troy Christianson of the Minnesota State Patrol Question: What can be done about an aging family member when their driving skills become diminished and it becomes a safety concern? Answer: Older drivers in general are safe. As we age the risks behind the wheel increase with the possibility of declining cognitive, vision and physical abilities. Older drivers are more likely to get killed or injured because they are more likely to be physically fragile and less able to recover from injuries. One out of every five traffic fatalities in Minnesota is a person age 65 or older. There are a number of options that can be pursued. As a family member, try to pay close attention to older family members’ driving skills. Start the discussion of when to stop driving, and determine other transportation options. Age alone cannot be considered a good cause for re-examination. This can be a sensitive issue for many older drivers. Older drivers forced to stop driving may feel a lack of freedom, anger and may suffer from depression. Actions to Take if Concerned about an Older Family Member’s Driving: • Write and sign a letter to the Department of Public Safety Driver and Vehicle Services (DPS-DVS) outlining specific concerns. - DVS will contact the person and ask them to come in for an interview. - Based on the interview, the person can be requested to conduct a written and road test, submit a vision report, and/ or submit a doctor’s statement verifying that they are physically qualified to drive within 30 days of the interview. - If no concerns arise during the interview or if the driver passes a road quiz and appears all your to be For physically fine, they may tree not beservice requiredneeds! to do anything Contact Ryan Lewis further to continue to drive. - If the person does not submit the requested Fully Insured statements or their vision/physical report Free Estimates! is unsatisfactory, their driver’s landetreeservice@yahoo.com license can be cancelled.

- If the person is unable to pass the tests within the required time, their driver’s license is cancelled. • Talk to a family member’s physician to see if the doctor has noticed the same problems. If so, ask the doctor to submit a request for a written/road test to DVS. If the physician sees the person is not physically qualified to drive, the doctor can notify the department and DVS can cancel the driver’s privileges. Law enforcement officers can also send a request for review to DVS if they identify a driver who they believe should either re-test or be checked by a doctor. In the end, DVS can allow the person to keep driving with increased limitations such as roadway speed, daylight only, certain times of the day or within a set limit of miles from his or her home. They can also require follow-up doctor’s exams. Don’t be afraid to speak up if you are concerned about a loved ones driving behavior. It could end up saving their life or another life on the road. You can avoid a ticket — and a crash — if you simply buckle up, drive at safe speeds, pay attention and always drive sober. Help us drive Minnesota Toward Zero Deaths. E-H Owners Planning Bar-B-Q Days Reunion/Rally

Many of them have never been to Belle Plaine but consider this weekend a homecoming. Not for them so much but for their motorcycles. About 30 Excelsior-Henderson motorcycle owners from all over the United States will be in Belle Plaine for the community festival this weekend. They have a poker ride planned Friday morning and a get-together at Union Square Park in the evening. They will ride in the parade Saturday and likely enjoy an informal ride in the area afterward. The riders are coming from as far away as New Jersey, Georgia, Virginia, Ohio, and Nebraska, said Mike Locklear, a Cleveland, Ohio resident who is coordinating the rally/reunion. A group of Excelsior-Henderson riders from the East Coast will be stopping in

Cleveland Wednesday and leaving for Belle Plaine Thursday, he said. The Excelsior Supply Co., dating back to Chicago, Ill. in the late-18th Century, started as a bicycle business. The design and motor of the motorcycle evolved over the years. In the 1990s, Dan Hanlon, brothers Terry and Dave, and Dave’s wife, Jenny, began working on a new design for an American-made motorcycle. It was designed to compete for market share with Harley-Davidson’s cruiser bikes. They built and opened a plant on the south side of Highway 169 that today houses Cambria. The first motorcycle was produced in December of 1998. The company made about 1,950 Super X motorcycles. But it was unable to secure the needed investment to keep production lines moving and in late-1999 filed for reorganization.

‘...To Bat for the Home Team’

Rick Wawrzyniak, a Belle Plaine native, recalls his decision to buy a Super X. He had seen an ad for the Super X in a magazine and was impressed by its appearance of power and stability. Now in his mid-50s, Wawrzyniak had been riding motorcycles since the early-‘80s. He still enjoys time riding his Super X. “I kind of went to bat for the home team,” he said. He’s ridden the bike from Minnesota to Wyoming and enjoyed its smooth ride. “It’s rare and it’s unique. This is the best bike I’ve owned.” Wawrzyniak hasn’t been back to his hometown in several years. He looks forward to the reunion, catching up with old friends and spending time at Bar-B-Q Days, talking about motorcycles, particularly Excelsion-Henderson. Like Wawrzyniak, Locklear recalls seeing the ads for the Super X. He remembers vowing to place an order for the V-twin powered cruiser should the plans for it ever come to fruition. In 1999, he went into a dealership and ordered a Super X. He was No. 7 on the list.

“I was wondering who the other six were,” he recalled. “I thought I was getting out front of the next big thing.” He favored the Excelsior-Henderson over the Harley-Davidson because of what he perceived as Harley’s excessive marketing for apparel and the image of HarleyDavidson riders. He sees motorcycle riders as an individualistic group of people. Locklear, who has ridden Harley-Davidson motorcycles over the years, believes the HarleyDavidson is more comfortable for the passenger than the passenger aboard an Excelsior-Henderson. Locker believes a Super X rider enjoys greater comfort than a Harley rider. Locklear was last in Minnesota for a rally/reunion several years ago around the Le Sueur area. He said riders are looking forward to “coming home” to where the Super X was made. “Even though it’s Cambria, we’ll still have our pictures taken in front of it,” he said. “This is hallowed ground.”

Court Removal Belle Plaine Public Works staff continued work last week removing the tennis courts on South Market Street, across from the junior-senior high school. The city and Belle Plaine School District recently swapped land for the tennis courts and a pleasure skating rink. The city’s short-term plan for the tennis court land is to remove the gravel below the bituminous surface and plant grass seed, said Al Fahey, Public Works superintendent. The city has yet to begin discussions on its long-term plans for the land.

A farmer stopped and said, “Sir, are you OK?” The preacher said, “Yes, I’m fine. I had the Lord riding with me.” The farmer said, “Well, you better let him ride with me, because you’re gonna kill him.”

Man Charged With Threatening Residents, Cop, Drug Possession criminal complaint. Radzevicius, 41, left the area on a bicycle before the officer arrived. He was seen carrying a hammer in his right hand, according to the criminal complaint. The officer followed Radzevicius carrying the hammer toward a downtown bar. After Radzevicius jumped off the bicycle near the bar, the officer followed him on foot. The officer ordered Radzevicius to stop and put his hands in the air. But the man started walking toward the officer, still carrying the hammer, yelling at the officer in a threatening manner, the complaint states. After the officer ordered Radzevicius to lie down on the ground, he reached for the hammer. The officer fired his Taser, hitting him. The complaint says Radzevicius still refused to follow commands. A second officer helped pry Radzevicius’s hands away from his body so he could be placed in handcuffs. Police found a hammer and a glass pipe on Radzevicius. The residue on it tested positive for methamphetamine, according to the criminal complaint.

It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. B.P.’s Win Streak Halted in St. Peter by Brett Kruschke, Matt Schultz & Mike Schultz Team Tigertown’s five-game winning streak came to a painful end Sunday night in St. Peter, but the Tigers have dug themselves out of a 4-8 hole to rest at .500 (10-10 overall, 4-5 River Valley League) with the playoffs just three weeks away. Tomorrow night (Thursday, July 13, 7:30 p.m.) the local nine ventures to picturesque Young America to face the Crow River Valley League’s Cardinals. The hallowed Bar-B-Q Days weekend will remain uninterrupted with action resuming Tuesday (July 18) at Gaylord. Again, the first pitch is slated for 7:30 p.m. The River Valley League AllStars defeated the best and brightest of the Dakota-RiceScott League Saturday, 7-6, at New Market. Belle Plaine’s Aiden Ladd caught for three innings, going 0-for-2. Mitchel Stier was selected as a pitcher but saw action at third base for two frames, going 1-for-1 with an RBI. Luke Narveson did not play. Be sure to follow the Tiger travails on social media, at “bptigertown” on both Facebook and Twitter. Bptigertown.com is the online home for the town Tigers. Tigers 10, Pine City 5 Pine City made the long drive Wednesday (July 5) to face the Tigers who, along with the July weather, have been heating up. Joe Pomije started on the hill, but he was touched for four runs in the top of the first inning. Pomije hung on for four frames and while it first looked unlikely, by hook or by crook, he picked up the win – the first of his young town-ball career. All relief pitcher Pat Schultz did was work quickly and hang zeroes, and he delivered scoreless fifth and sixth innings in relief of Pomije. It was during the top of the sixth, however, when the bank of lights on the left side of Tiger Park went dark for the second time in a week, and yet again the teams decided to shorten the game to seven innings. Rookies contributed to the victory, with Jonathan Schmidt throwing a scoreless seventh and Tyler O’Brien picking up his first town-team hit and stolen base. Aiden Ladd went 2-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBI. Jonny Vinkemeier and Ryan Bremseth-Vining also enjoyed multi-hit evenings. Tigers 7, Gaylord 4 The Islanders came to town Friday (July 7) for a league tilt on a beautiful night for baseball. Allstar ballplayer Stier got the nod on the hill, but was touched for two runs in the first inning. He settled down quickly and didn’t allow another run through six innings of work, allowing six hits and one earned run while punching out four. The Tigers broke through in the fourth, batting around to score five runs and take a 7-2 lead. With two outs, Pat Schultz delivered a two-run single and was immedi-

ately knocked in by Aiden Ladd, who followed with a triple. Vinkemeier came in to relieve Stier and attempted to earn an old-fashioned, three-inning save, but he couldn’t get the final out and needed a helping hand from Josh Terrio. Gaylord scored once in the ninth, loaded the bases and brought the go-ahead run to the plate – with a full count – when Aiden Ladd snuffed out a squirrelly squibber at first base. Four Tigers posted multi-hit games as part of a 12-hit attack: Pat Schultz (2-for-5, two RBI), Matt Schultz (2-for-3, RBI, BB), Aiden Ladd (2-for-5, RBI, a triple, two steals), and Terrio (2-for-4, two runs). Despite all the offense, Ken Tritz was named team MVP for the night for his delectable pulled-pork sandwiches in the concession stand. St. Peter 13, Tigers 9 The Tiger train chugged to St. Peter for a Sunday (July 9) evening matchup with the Saints, who entered with a 7-2 mark in RVL play. El Tigre has been hot as of late, with five straight wins overall. Some would say that the Tigers had momentum, while the negative Nellies of the world might say they were due for a dud. The pessimists won out, as the Tigers played poorly. Rookie righty Nathan Herman got the start on the mound and went four innings, giving up seven hits and four runs. The Tiger bats supported Herman and he departed with a 6-4 lead. Terrio got the call from the bullpen and after a scoreless fifth, the Saints tied the game with a pair of runs in the sixth. Belle Plaine took the lead back with a run in the seventh, at 7-6, but the wheels on the Tiger Train were about to come off. St. Peter scored four times in the home half of the seventh, although the Tigers cut the deficit to 10-9 with two more tallies in the eighth. St. Peter’s three runs in the bottom of the eighth, however, were the final nails in the coffin. Four Belle Plaine errors played a helping hand in the demise, as only two of Terrio’s eight charged runs were earned. Pomije got the final three outs of the messy eighth. It was another good night for the Tiger bats as Belle Plaine lashed out 16 hits. O’Brien received his first start in the leadoff spot, and he delivered in a big way with a 3-for-4 effort, scoring four runs, walking twice and stealing two bases. Pat Schultz followed him in the No. 2-slot and continued what, in limited action, has been his best-ever season. The 20-year veteran went 3-for-5 with a walk and three RBI, raising his season batting average to a rarified level of .679 (19-for-28, with six walks). With Zac Dahlke keeping an ever-stingy score book, that’s darn near impossible. Matt Schultz had the other three-hit game, coming in six trips. Aiden Ladd went 2-for-5 with a walk and two RBI, while Herman knocked in three runs behind a pair of singles.

The Tigers enter post-season tournament play this weekend in Waterville Saturday (July 15, 11 a.m.). Belle Plaine enters the playoffs with a 9-1 record. Tigers Head into Playoffs on a Roll With two wins Monday evening (July 10), the Belle Plaine American Legion baseball team heads into post-season play on a roll this weekend and next at Elysian and Montgomery. The Tigers enter post-season play with just a single loss in their 10 games. Belle Plaine’s only setback came in the opening game of a doubleheader against Waterville June 26. The Tigers won the second game of the doubleheader. District Playoffs Belle Plaine’s opening playoff game is slated for Saturday (June 15, 11 a.m.) against Southwest Christian in Wa-

terville. If the Tigers win, they’ll face the winner of the Montgomery-Goodhue game at 4 p.m. in Waterville. If Belle Plaine falls in its playoff opener, the Tigers will face the loser of the Montgomery-Goodhue game at 4 p.m. in Montgomery. The third-round games will be played next Saturday (July 22). The Tigers swept a doubleheader against St. Peter Monday night in St. Peter. Belle Plaine won the first game, 11-6. The Tigers won the second game, 1-0, in a four-inning game. Before the win over St. Peter, the Tigers overcame Le SueurHenderson Thursday (July 6). Belle Plaine swept the doubleheader, winning the first game, 4-3, in extra innings. The Tigers won the second game in easier fashion, shutting out Le Sueur-Henderson, 10-0, in a game ended early thanks to the mercy rule.
