Council Votes 3-2 to Okay Ridgeview’s Amended Plans Swimming Pool Employees Get Pay Increase
by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine City Council held one of its most eventful meetings in recent memory last Tuesday night, one that included a heavy rain, lighting, wind and hail storm that prompted the council to recess for about 12 minutes until things calmed down outdoors. Afterwards, the council voted 3-2 to approve the replat and amended planned unit development for the soonto-be constructed Ridgeview Heath Campus in Belle Plaine. Final plans, which were approved by the council on June 20, call for a mixed-use development that will include a three-story, 54-unit senior independent living center, a 12,900square-foot medical clinic with future vertical expansion, and a 10,000-square-foot health and wellness center.
Ridgeview obtained the land from the city for $1 provided it constructs the campus and creates a prescribed number of jobs. Construction of the complex, which will be located near the intersection of Highway 169 and County Road 3/Meridian Street, is expected to begin this summer. However, it was noted in the council’s packet on June 20 that Ridgeview Medical Center and The Lutheran Home Association were proposing a planned unit development amendment and replat of the campus. The replat includes a new lot that will create the potential to transfer fee ownership of the lot to a different property owner. Belle Plaine Community Development Director Cynthia Smith-Strack had noted that the new parcel would be owned by private investors and would be taxable, but it is the intent of The Lutheran Home Association to purchase the land within the next five years, at which time The Lutheran Home could
Bridge May be Open Friday Barring any unforeseen circumstances, Mayor Mike Pingalore said he has been told by the contractor (S.M. Hentges and Sons) that it’s likely Belle Plaine’s new overpass can be open to traffic in time for the start of Bar-B-Q Days this Fri-
day. The bridge opening would be especially beneficial in alleviating the heavy flow of traffic leaving the park area after Sunday night’s fireworks display. The date for an official opening ceremony has not yet been determined.
propose to change the property (lot 2) from taxable to tax exempt. A letter dated July 5 to the city council from Ridgeview President and CEO Robert Stevens and Belle Plaine Lutheran Home President and CEO Michael Klatt requested that the city okay the change. “The replat will provide a legal description for the property on which the senior residence with services will reside. Ridgeview Medical Center and The Lutheran Home Association will have multiple documents that will define each organization’s role and responsibilities with regard to the project. “The Ground Lease and Development Agreement both require a legal description of the property on which the senior residence resides,” continued the letter, “In addition, the lending institution that will provide the financing of the senior residence will require a legal description within the mortgage documents. It is important to note that the legal description provided within the replat will not change the tax status of the land. All the land defined within the replat will be subject to property tax on day one of the project.” Council members Paul Chard and Gary Trost wanted added assurance that the tax status of the senior living center will not

McKenzie Koepp to Cap Very Memorable 12 Months on Sunday McKenzie Koepp has had a very memorable past 12 months. Last July 19, she was crowned Miss Belle Plaine at Bar-B-Q Days. In August, September, October and November, she was a member of the Belle Plaine High School volleyball team, a season that culminated with the program’s first-ever state championship at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. In January, Koepp represented Belle Plaine at the St. Paul Winter Carnival, meeting King Boreas and Queen Aurora, and countless other queens representing communities from across the state. In spring, she was one of the top players on the BPHS softball team and at graduation was the student speaker for the class of 2016. To top it all off, she graduated with a perfect 4.0 grade-point-average. This Sunday, Koepp, the daughter of Brent and Wendy Koepp, will deliver one final speech and crown her replacement before starting a new chapter in her life, which will begin Aug. 16 when she moves to the campus of Winona State University to study business. Besides all the above, Koepp was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council (vice president), Tiger Pals, Tiger Target Team and Pep Club. Koepp, who is working as a
nanny this summer, also found the time to represent Belle Plaine in close to a dozen parades and numerous other events. She said her favorite parade was the Arli-Dazzle in Arlington in December. “We (she and the rest of the royal court) made our own float and there was a ton of lights (in the parade). It was beautiful,” Koepp said. Joining her in the many parades this year were First Princess Kali Gorman, daughter of Ryan and Angie Gorman; Second Princess Haley Johnson, daughter of Heather Johnson and Jasen Johnson; and Miss Congeniality Nicole Bauleke, daughter of Ann Rybus and Kevin Bauleke. Of course, the St. Paul Winter Carnival was another highlight for Koepp during her reign as Miss Belle Plaine. “There were over 90 other ambassadors from around the state. I met a lot of amazing ladies. It was a breathtaking experience.” Koepp said. Koepp will put the final touch on Sunday afternoon’s coronation when she crowns one of 15 soon-to-be BPHS seniors as her replacement. Her advice to that person? “Always show the world your best smile because you’re representing the best town in the world.”

Scott County Fair Exhibit Entry Deadlines Upcoming Do you think that vacation picture is good enough for a postcard? Does that sunset over the lake melt your heart each time you see it? Have your gardening skills exceeded your average neighbor? Do you want more than your brother-in-law to know you are a great brewmaster? You are ready to try the county fair. The county fairs were invented to help improve skills and develop plant varieties to help feed the population. All of the different departments represent the skills, crafts and pastimes needed to lead a rich life. Most date to pioneer days and each has been rediscovered in its own way and time in this 21st century. You bring your best and compare it to standards of perfection
and the other entries. The blue ribbon can be your badge of accomplishment. There are youth categories. There are divisions for artists with special needs, and don’t forget your rabbits or laying hens in the livestock premium list. You can enter online. The deadline for entries is July 15. Art and crafts can be dropped July 21 or 23. Foods and flowers and vegetables are dropped off July 26. Every department is judged by experts in the field usually certified by the University or with proven professional experience. Then enjoy the fair starting July 27 and see which ribbon you won and collect your check. Each ribbon has a cash award attached to it. See you at the fair.

Belle Plaine Lutheran Home Has New Administrator Craig Smith joined The Lutheran Home Association (TLHA) as the new administrator for The Lutheran Home: Belle Plaine, a skilled nursing facility on the Belle Plaine Campus. Smith brings decades of experience in skilled care administration and executive management in senior care environments. Previously working in both small rural facilities and a large 200-bed metro facility, he is well-equipped to take on this new role in Belle Plaine. “Craig is knowledgeable in all aspects of the financial, reimbursement and regulatory requirements of skilled care and administration,” said Mariann Wiebusch, vice president of operations for The Lutheran Home The 19th annual Scott County Relay for Life was held Friday Association. “He intends to build (July 8) evening in Shakopee. Chard also wanted to make sure that whoever owns the senior residence property in the future will have to pay taxes, and that such a provision be included in the agreement. However, Mayor Mike Pingalore, Cary Coop and Henry Pressley Jr. indicated that no such provision was necessary. City Attorney Bob Vose commented that it would be difficult to add the tax requirement as a condition of the platting process, but that it could be addressed in an agreement. He added that it was not a condition of the business subsidy agreement. Chard and Trost both voted no to the replat, while Pingalore, Coop and Pressley voted yes. No one in the audience spoke at the public hearing that preceded the council’s vote. In other business Monday night, the council voted 4-1 to okay a $1 per hour wage increase for the city’s seasonal swimming pool employees. Council Member Cary Coop had proposed the increase, citing that because of the training and skills required, the lifeguards and water safety instructors deserve to be paid more than minimum wage, which is $9 per hour. cheerleader for each and every one of the them with his enduring positive attitude, Smith continued. “During his time as an after-school supervisor, he was an ambassador for the district and community . . . Presently, Kruschke is making a video documentary on the construction of the new overpass in Belle Plaine, which began with the ground-breaking ceremony, continued with construction progress footage and will soon culminate with the actual opening ceremony for the bridge. Kruschke said he plans to ride in the parade in a red Corvette courtesy of Matt Saxe Chevrolet-Buick. His chauffeur will be his brother, Orin. Before riding in the parade, Kruschke will be jogging on the streets of Belle Plaine. He is a regular in the Bar-B-Q Days 5K Bull Run, and is normally the race’s oldest participant. Earlier in life, he completed seven marathons. Kruschke is also an avid traveler, having visited alreadymentioned China, Ecuador and Iraq, as well as Thailand, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and most major European cities and elsewhere. He has also cruised the Caribbean Sea and Mexican Riviera multiple times. Another pastime for Kruschke is volunteering. He has done so for the Belle Plaine Food Shelf and Bar-B-Q Days Beef Stand. He has also been a guest at

Kingsway Retirement Living and Rotary Club meetings to talk about his travel experiences. He is the clue writer for the Harvest Coin Hunt that is held annually in October in conjunction with the Scenic Byway Half-Marathon and 5K races, the latter of which Kruschke is also a regular in. He is an active participant in all three of the community’s annual treasure hunts. Kruschke has three grown children from a marriage when he lived in California – Kim, who lives in Denver, Colo.; Billy, who lives in Tustin, Calif.; and Karman, who lives in Burbank, Calif. Kruschke was born in the German Settlement about six miles
south of Belle Plaine to Orlando and Hilda Kruschke. Being named grand marshal this year reminded him of his actual birth day. “One of the people picked to be the ďŹ rst ever three (BarB-Q Days) grand marshals in 1977 was Dr. H.M. Juergens. Everybody called him ‘Doc’ Juergens. Forty years before he became the ďŹ rst grand marshal of Bar-B-Q Days, he was called out to a farm home to help a young lady (Hilda) deliver a child and that child was me,â€? Kruschke said. Joining Doc Juergens in 1977 as the ďŹ rst Bar-B-Q Days grand marshals were Everett Edberg and longtime circus man Leo Albrecht Sr.

Many people know Kruschke as “Dollar Bill, a nickname he took on when he began his videotaping and play-by-play career in 2000. He credits his nephew, Brett Kruschke, with coming up with the title. As for who will be behind the camera for this Saturday’s parade, the answer is “Dollar Bill. “I’m going to have my video camera with me in the Corvette and when my part is done in the parade, I’m going to jump out with the camera and tripod and start taping the rest of the parade from the street. No one who knows Bill would expect anything less.

Back row, from left, Lisa Tiegs, Kerry Wagner and Lynda Glynn. Front row, from left, Jeanne Ruehling, Ann Marie Koenig and Ann Klehr. Belle Plaine’s 28th annual Bar-B-Q Days festivities would take place that coming Friday through Sunday with a crowded agenda of activities for all ages, according to Chairman Neil Keohane. The popular barbecued beef sandwich would be on sale all three days for 75 cents. Wayne and Lorene Ediger would be grand marshals of the parade, and the reining Miss Belle Plaine was Kari Lockrem. There were 20 queen candidates (see accompanying photos). Metro phone service for Belle Plaine received an overwhelming 79.3 percent favorable vote in the Public Utilities Commission-sponsored election. According to Chuck Perkins of Belle Plaine, a total of 1,085 area telephone subscribers voted in favor of metro phone service and 284 against. “This is a real nice plus for the community. I can’t imagine any roadblocks now with this kind of vote,” said Perkins, who along with Ron Hennen had been coordinating the drive by the Belle Plaine Development Corporation to bring metro phone service to Belle Plaine. The service would likely not be operating for another year, and when placed in service, would result in a $7.20 per phone increase over the current $8 per month rate, making the total rate $15.20 per month. The race for Scott County Sheriff escalated into a veritable track meet with the filing that week of a seventh candidate. Filing before Tuesday’s deadline was Jordan Police Chief Alvin Erickson. Also seeking the office being vacated by Scott County Sheriff Doug Tietz were Chief Deputy Sher-
iff William J. Nevin, Police Lt. Stephen Strehlow of Shakopee, former County Commissioner Doug Hafermann of Prior Lake, Thomas Pauly of Jordan, Deputy Sheriff Richard L. (Dick) Welch and Lt. Don Hamilton. Dr. Wayne Liebhard, son of Harlan and the late Arvilla Liebhard of Belle Plaine, completed a three-year family medicine residency at St. John’s Hospital in St. Paul. Wayne would begin practice in August with the Sundance Medical Clinics of Shakopee, Savage and Jordan. Belle Plaine’s newest business was MT’s Answering Service, which was started by Marge Tesch in an office next to the D & R Bar at 100 East Main Street downtown. She provided a telephone answering service for businesses that contracted with her for $45 per month. The phone would ring at both her customer’s office and her office. If it was not answered within a prescribed number of rings, she would answer and take a message. Warren Wolf was officially seated on the Belle Plaine School Board that Monday night, succeeding Mike Newell, as the board conducted its annual organizational meeting. The board also reelected Roger Delgehausen as board chairman, Pat Schwartz as clerk and Donald Koepp as treasurer. Joanne Johnson, who was recently reelected, was beginning her fourth term on the board. The board also voted in favor of increasing each member’s salary from $400 to $500 per year, the first increase in a decade. The Belle Plaine School Board
accepted the resignation David Brekke, an English teacher and assistant volleyball and girls’ track and field coach. Karen Scott was hired to teach grade five and would also serve as head tennis and girls’ track and field coach. Linda Madson was hired as a second grade teacher. In other action, the board accepted the resignation of Dan Dressen as tennis coach. The Belle Plaine town Tigers baseball team dropped two of three games, falling to Watertown 18-14, beating Norwood 5-2 and losing to Jordan 5-2. In the slugfest against Watertown, the Tigers had a six-run lead going into the ninth inning before six walks and an error helped allow Watertown to win the game in 10 innings. In the win against Norwood, Jeff Miller was 3 for 3 at the plate, while Paul Fogarty and Al Hentges both had two hits.
60 Years Ago (1956)
About 25 relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Baker to celebrate the 82nd birthday of Mrs. Baker. Robert Minton returned home from Belgium to spend the summer with his family. Bob had been studying at the American College in Louvain the past four years. More than 60 children participated in the annual checker and archery tourneys. Arthur (Butch) Hahn and Ray Busch won their respective age brackets in checkers. Mary Johnson won the girls. In the archery contest, Gary Schuneman won the championship in his group
and John Meths won in the older division. The California Highway Patrol stopped truck driver W. Schuman of Belle Plaine to tell him one of the truck’s wheels had come off and crashed into a house. Schuman looked at his truck and said he was missing two wheels. The second wheel was not found. Mrs. John Guessen, nee Laban, died July 4 at the age of 68. Matt’s Variety Store celebrated its grand opening at the new location and sixth anniversary in Belle Plaine with a big sale. The store was moved from next to the theater to the Knights of Columbus building, formerly occupied by the Christenson store. Dr. and Mrs. H.M. Juergens attended the commencement exercises at the University, at which their son, Dr. John Juergens, received his master of science degree in medicine for intensive research of the heart after three years at the Mayo Clinic. About 3,000 6-week-old pheasants, raised under the sponsorship of the Belle Plaine Rod and Gun Club, were released near Belle Plaine. A heavy rainstorm, accompanied by strong wind, hit this area and did some damage. In town, there was flooding of some basements and large limbs torn from shade trees. In the Zion Church, Benton, several trees on the church grounds were uprooted, also at the Robert Stuewe farmyard. Pat Prendergast brought in a stalk of corn on July 11 that measured 8 feet tall, and said it was the general average of his 18-acre field. Mr. and Mrs. John Winterfeldt announced the marriage of their daughter, Leona, to William Moore, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. T. Moore of Camden, Tenn. Pending the advent of dial service, the telephone company embarked on an extensive changeover of its farm lines because the number of subscribers would be cut to 10 per line. Work was in progress of putting up cable from the exchange office to the outskirts of town. William Tritz, lifelong resident of this community, died of a heart attack while at St. Francis Hospital in Shakopee. At St. John’s Church, Sibley County, took place the marriage of Miss Glenda Magdena Bressler of Henderson to John LeRoy Effertz of St. John’s. St. Thomas parish in Jessenland entertained an exceedingly large number of guests at its chicken and ham dinner served by the ladies of the parish. Between 800 and 900 dinners were served. Howard Rothfork of Norwood announced the opening of his new independent oil station and cafe about two miles east of Belle Plaine on Highway 169, near the Anderly corner. At St. Paul’s Evangelical and Reformed Church in Henderson took place the wedding of Yvonne Ann Schultz of Henderson to Raymond Ellsworth Meierbachtol of Blakeley.
90 Years Ago (1926)
Grain cutting was progressing the fastest in years. Threshermen stated they would be doing shock threshing in another week. The Belle Plaine school election brought out 345 voters. Mrs.
Jos. Neubeiser and J.A. Schoell were elected in a field of four. Mrs. Neubeiser was the first woman to serve on the board. Mr. and Mrs. Martin Imhoff, who were married in Belle Plaine in 1876, celebrated their golden wedding at their home in St. Paul. Members of the Albrecht families from here were present. Mr. and Mrs. A.A. Hahn made a trip to Chicago by auto to attend the semiannual convention of the Retailers Commercial Union. The weather was hot. The government bureau in the Twin City reported 102.3 degrees. The highest previous recorded temperature was 102 in 1901. Fred Keup and Eugene Johnson left on a drive to Yellowstone Park and the Black Hills. Mr. and Mrs. Matt Lengenfeld and five of their children were back for a vacation visit with her folks, the Matt Neisens. A large number from this locality went to Shakopee for the funeral of Lena Schroeder, 35, who taught school in this vicinity. Ed Ekhardt’s pro baseball team played to a packed ball park at Albert Lea and won 5 to 1. Ekhardt scheduled a doubleheader at the Belle Plaine park for the following Sunday. Dennis F. McDermott, former Belle Plaine boy who spent his school days here, was back from Winchester, Idaho, with his wife. It was his first trip back in nine years and his wife’s first eastern trip. A great number of Union Hill folks went to Ellsworth for the funeral of John Lenz. He spent his younger years at Union Hill and his wife was the former Lizzie Giesen. Carl J. Nelson, 82, a resident of the East Union community for 48 years, died. The funeral was held at the East Union church. The L.G. Nelsons started construction of their new home at Gotha.
120 Years Ago (1896)
F.J. Whitlock was elected chief of the fire department, Martin Kelleher assistant chief, H.B. Conlon secretary and Julius Seiberlich treasurer. Heavy rains caused washouts on the railroad. One of the passenger trains was held here for hours. Mike Hallinan was back from Canada to look after construction of his new business block. After an all-night search, the body of Mrs. Jos. Klemns was found when daylight came. In going to a neighbor to get some cream, she took a shortcut through a ravine and was stricken with a heart attack. William Jennings Bryan suddenly dawned on the country as a new political leader in winning the Democratic nomination for president. The Gold Democrats were in revolt.

Cologne Weighing City Water Rate Hike to Repay Loan Loan Would Pay for New Treatment Plant, Well
As Cologne moves toward approval of a water treatment plant and groundwater well, paying for the facilities and their operating costs could well be the final hurdle before issuing the final go-ahead. The city council is considering increasing the cost of municipal water to help repay a loan of up to $7.4 million from the Minnesota Public Facilities Authority (PFA) for the plant and new well. Monday (July 11), the city received a study on city water rates. The study provides the council with information on the revenue that would be generated by varying levels of rate hikes. But with Mayor Scott Williams and Councilor Jeff McInnis absent, the council tabled until the July 18 meeting discussion on the study and any proposed increases. Cologne city councilors have until the first week of August to approve the existing bids on the plant and well. Those bids came in around $6.2 million. “I think this will take a little more time than just saying yeah or nay,” said Councilor Kyle Evenski. PFA pushed the city to complete the rate study to assure Cologne had the revenue to repay the loan, said Cologne City
Administrator Jesse Dickson said. Cologne last raised its municipal water rates in 2015. The study performed by Springsted Inc. includes proposed rate hikes of 24 percent in 2017, 2018 and 2019, followed by a 10 percent increase in 2020, a 5 percent increase in 2021 and a 3 percent bump in 2022 to repay the loan. The study also assumes no increases from 2023 through 2036. It includes the possibility of volume fees to generate additional revenue from high-use customers. The proposed increases would bump the water bill for a house using up to 20,000 gallons annually by $36.37 per month or $436.43 annually. The city’s other option to fund repayment of the loan is through property taxes. The study assumes 15 to 30 new connections annually between 2017 and 2036. In other action at the July 11 meeting, the Cologne City Council: • Paid bills totaling $226,688.04. • Granted the Church of St. Bernard a temporary liquor license for Oct. 1. • Passed a resolution identifying the need for funding for the completion of the city’s 2040 comprehensive plan and authorizing a grant application for assistance funds. • Directed the city administrator to seek quotes on lighting and a memorial plaque for a tree recently planted outside city hall.

Grandparents, great-grandparents, aunts and uncles helped Lincoln celebrate. Humor Corner: A man, troubled by his conscience, went into confessional of a Catholic church and confessed to the priest that for many years he had been stealing building supplies from the lumberyard where he worked. The priest asked, “What did you take?” “Took enough lumber to build my own house, my mother’s house, my son’s house, and my daughter’s house,” the man replied. “This is a very serious sin,” the priest said. “I will have to consider an appropriate penance. Have you ever done a retreat?” “No, Father,” the man replied. “But if you can get the plans. I can get the lumber.”.

B.P. Legion Baseball Set for Postseason The Belle Plaine American Legion baseball team completed the regular season with a record of 10-1, the only loss coming during a two-game split against St. Peter. In league play, the Tigers beat Le Sueur, Montgomery, Waterville and Sibley East all twice, and also defeated Jordan in a non-league game. Belle Plaine will begin district tournament play this weekend (see accompanying bracket). “We have had a shortened season due to the playoff run by the high school team, said Belle Plaine coach Jason Ladd. “Also, the seniors have chosen not to play legion and go to the town team, except for two who are on the roster for emergency reasons only and to try to help the underclassman get more playing time for next year’s high school season. Ladd’s assistant coach is Josh Terrio.

With the game tied at two going into the bottom of the ninth, Matt Schultz led off with a single. Aiden Ladd tripled to score Schultz all the way from first due to his blazing speed – or maybe it was the ball getting stuck in the ivy. Aiden Ladd paced the 12-hit attack with three safeties, while Matt Schultz, Dylan Nyberg, Hartman and Luke Narveson collected two each. Tigers 7, Arlington 4 The Tigers came into OldTimers’ Night looking to sweep the weekend and their second league game in a row. Even though many of the young Tigers had never heard polka before, Ernie STUMPF was playing music and getting the boys fired up. Mitch Stier started on the mound and didn’t have his best stuff. He was able to get through four innings of two-run ball. Jonny Vinkemeier was next, tossing 2.2 frames of one-run ball before running into trouble in the seventh. Zac Dahlke entered with the bases loads but no problem for the Big Easy – he induced a fly out to right field from Nathan Thomes. The eighth wasn’t quite as easy. Despite going 0-2 on the first two men, Dahlke yielded a single and a walk before giving way to Josh Terrio. The firsttime All-Star merely struck out the side, preserving the 5-3 lead. In the ninth, Terrio set down the first two men but then lost the zone, loading the bases on a pair of walks and a single. As with Dahlke two innings earlier, a fly out to right field left the sacks full yet again. Belle Plaine scored four in the first, one in the second and nothing until two more insurance runs in the eighth. The Tigers had 10 hits, with Narveson and Matt Schultz both tallying two. 2016 Town Tigers Schedule May 6 vs. St. Benedict W 9-6 May 8 at Shakopee L 10-0 May 13 at Arlington L 3-0 May 15 at Henderson L 10-6 May 17 vs. Mudcats L 11-1 May 20 vs. St. Peter W 8-2 May 22 at Chanhassen L 13-6 May 25 vs. Mn. Lisle Gets 180 Days for 140+ MPH Run From Police
The father/son team of JoJo and Jake Hartman show where they found this year’s Bar-B-Q Days medallion.
Hartman Son/Father Find Medallion Jake Hartman and his father, “JoJoâ€? Hartman, solved this year’s Bar-B-Q Days Medallion Hunt last Wednesday evening following the publishing of the second clue. They found it underneath an orange trafďŹ c cone on top of a culvert along Enterprise Drive near Coborn’s. Jake, 20, was the one who actually uncovered the coin but had help from his dad during the search process. They are not the ďŹ rst in the Hartman family tree to solve the Bar-B-Q Days Medallion mystery. Jake’s grandfather, Bob Hartman, and uncle, Tony, have each found it multiple times through the years, while cousins Randy and Madison have each found it once. It was in 2014 when Jake accompanied Madison on the medallion hunt, which ended with Madison ďŹ nding it lodged in the ground next to a small post behind the Tiger Park baseball ďŹ eld scoreboard along West Park Street. Madison said she was the one who physically found it that day but Jake said he told her where to look. “I’ve always gone out looking for it (with family members)
but ďŹ nally this year I found it,â€? Jake said. There were a number of clues that led Jake and JoJo to where the coin was. One of the main ones was in the second clue (Number one single for the rooftop singers), which is “Walk Right Inâ€? and a jingle for Great Clips, which is located in the Coborn’s complex. “I knew it was right around there,â€? Jake said. He added that there were also multiple references to “cans,â€?

Jeremy Lisle, the Plymouth man who led police on a chase through four counties reaching speeds police said exceeded 140 mph during the earlymorning hours of June 15, will spend 180 days in the Scott County Jail. Court records show Lisle pleaded guilty to felony charges of eeing police in a motor vehicle and ďŹ fth-degree drug possession last Tuesday (July 5) in Scott County District Court. He also pleaded guilty to fourthdegree DWI, a misdemeanor. Charges of eeing a police ofďŹ cer on foot, driving with a suspended license and failing to drive with due care were dismissed. Judge Shawn Moynihan sentenced Lisle to 180 days in the county jail. Lisle must also complete a chemical use assessment and follow its recommendations, subject himself to random testing and remain law abiding. Moynihan stayed for ďŹ ve years a sentence that would have sent Lisle to prison in St. Cloud. He must also pay fees totaling $360. Around 1:45 a.m. July 15, Lisle led several police departments and a state trooper on a 48½-mile chase that lasted 54 minutes. The criminal complaint says at times he was clocked at speeds exceeding 140 mph. Lisle was eventually arrested in Sibley County carrying what police alleged was .20 grams of methamphetamine. The chase reportedly began in Jordan when an ofďŹ cer initially clocked Lisle’s Dodge Charger R/T sports car at 68 mph in a 55 mph zone as he drove southbound on Highway 169. When a Jordan patrol ofďŹ cer turned his ashing lights on to pull Lisle over, Jordan Police Chief Brett Empey said, “the suspect oored it.â€? As Lisle approached the Belle Plaine city limits, he was driving at 131 mph, according to the complaint. Lisle moved toward the Belle Plaine exit off Highway 169, which was occupied by another vehicle. He swerved
back onto Highway 169 and continued heading south, the criminal complaint said. Belle Plaine police pursued Lisle until Highway 19, the border of Scott and Le Sueur counties, before breaking off the chase. Continuing South on Highway 169, Lisle drove through Le Sueur at speeds ranging from 50 to 140 mph. He was ďŹ nally stopped on Highway 22 when police used stop sticks to puncture his vehicle’s tires. Lisle ed police on foot. A
state patrol trooper and Jordan police ofďŹ cer chased him on foot and quickly arrested him. Police began a forfeiture proceeding to claim the vehicle. The process was halted, according to a spokesperson for the Scott County Attorney’s ofďŹ ce, because the Dodge Charger was returned to the rental company that owns it. The criminal charges against Lisle were more severe because of a previous drug conviction within the past decade. In 2008, he was convicted on two counts of ďŹ fth-degree possession.
New Chamber Executive Director Sharon Schmitz, who has called Belle Plaine her home nearly all her life, started her new job as the Belle Plaine Chamber of Commerce’s executive director on Monday. She replaces Kelly Melo, who resigned earlier this year. Melo had been the executive director since 2013, when she replaced Donna Woodard. Schmitz said she “looks forward to working with the business community, and will do
