Time to Get Fired Up Bar-B-Q Days Starts Friday
Bob and Maureen Kahle, lifelong farmers, will lead Saturday’s Bar-B-Q Days Parade.
Bob and Maureen Kahle Grand Marshals of Parade by Dan Ruud Bob and Maureen Kahle are no strangers to participating in parades – Bob with his drums and Maureen on a four-wheel bicycle. This Saturday, they will be side by side, front and center as grand marshals of the Bar-B-Q Days Parade. “When they (Bar-B-Q Days Committee) asked us, I first thought no – we’re just plain people,” Maureen said. “Then we talked to the kids and they
said it’s an honor and to go for it.” Bob and Maureen, who live on a farm in Blakeley Township, have been involved with Bar-B-Q Days for over 30 years, working with either the meat committee or in the kitchen. Bob has been a longtime co-chair of the meat committee with Bruce Volek. Bob and Maureen are also longtime members of the Le Sueur County Pioneer Power Association,
Bob seeing to the entertainment and also doing some threshing, and Maureen logging hours in the Country Store. Bob has been a drummer for many different “old-time” bands through the decades, including the well-known Ernie Stumpf Band, and has played in the Bar-B-Q Days Parade a number of times. He’s also

Norm Pint: New GM Taking Scott County Fair Back to its Roots
An oak table and chairs welcomes visitors to Norm Pint’s office at the Scott County Fairgrounds, the kind of table you’d find in the kitchen of a farmhouse. It replaced the two big chairs in front of the previous Scott County Fair Manager’s desk. “We get more work done sitting at the table,” said Pint, the Scott County Fair’s new general manager. He replaced Brad Woodward last winter and is now a week away from the 2014 fair’s opening day. Pint’s approach is simple. As directed by the Agricultural Society, the group that oversees the county fair, Pint plans to guide a portion of the county fair back to its agrarian roots. He and the society want to help people in an increasingly suburban county gain a better understanding of farming. That new approach will start next week with the Miracle of Birth display in the large dairy at the Scott County Fairgrounds. It’s a multi-phase proj-
For the 56th year in a row, Belle Plaine will celebrate the middle of summer with the usual assortment fun and food that is known as Bar-B-Q Days this Friday through Sunday. The outdoor thermostat is expected to be set in the 80s during the day and 70s during the evening. There are no 90s or 100s in the forecast. The chance for weekend rain is minimal. Most food and beverages this weekend will cost the same as last year, including the festival’s namesake sandwich at $3.50. As was the case last year, the meat will be from Coborn’s pre-sliced. The Beer Garden will again feature Miller Lite (strong), which will remain $3 per glass and $12 for pitchers ($10 refill). Also on sale will be Leine’s Summer Shandy, Redd’s Apple Ale and Mike’s Hard Lemonade, all of which will cost $4 a glass. Volunteers will again be pushing carts along the parade route collecting non-perishable food items. Parade watchers can bring as much food as they want to donate. All items collected will go to the Belle Plaine Food Shelf downtown. All profits from Bar-B-Q Days are used for community projects. For more information on this weekend’s festivities, call the Belle Plaine Festival and Events office at 952-873-0855 or e-mail belleplainefestivals@ gmail.com. Near the end of the parade, Belle Plaine Rotary Club members will be collecting aluminum cans for the Cans for Kids program. So bring your cans or save your cans to be deposited in the Rotary’s can trailer.
Friday’s Events
The Beef Stand and Beer Garden will open at 4:30 p.m. and the Carnival at 6:30 p.m.

Amara Meyer to Crown New Miss Belle Plaine Miss Belle Plaine Amara Meyer had a pretty eventful past 12 months. Not only did she represent the community in nearly a dozen parades across the area, but she competed in varsity volleyball, basketball and track and field for Belle Plaine High School. She competed in the state meet in both volleyball and track and field. She was all-conference in all three sports, graduating from BPHS last month. Meyer, the daughter of Chris and Janene Meyer, is working this summer as a nanny. She will leave soon for her first year of school at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls. She isn’t sure what her major will be yet, but is considering something in the business field. She also plans to join River Falls’
volleyball and track and field teams. Meyer said she was not able to participate in the St. Paul Winter Carnival this year due to a tournament. But she did experience winter when she and the rest of the royal court rode in a Holidazzle parade in Le Sueur County in December. “That’s probably the most memorable one because it was really, really cold,” Meyer said. One of Meyer’s “favorite” events during her reign as Miss Belle Plaine was appearing at the Scott County Draft Horse Hitch Show last summer. “It was one of our first outings together as a royal court and we

The storm hit the night of June 19. The next afternoon, Friday, June 20, after hearing lower Blakeley had been evacuated, Jeff Luskey came down to the 8,000-square-foot section of the building where the brewery is housed. There, he found mud covering the floor of the building. Unlike other area buildings or roads, there was no damage to the building itself. Luskey and his brother assumes the mud came down the bluff along County Road 1. But without an obvious path of hardened mud, the two men aren’t exactly certain how the LeRoy Chard and a crew from Chard Tiling & Excavating of Belle Plaine took down the old Our Lady of the Prairie school building Friday afternoon. The building was replaced earlier this year by the new $2 million Family Life Center. An additional photo of the demolition is on Page 12.

got to ride on one of the hitches. It was a lot of fun,” Meyer said. The rest of Belle Plaine’s 2013-14 Royal Court consists of First Princess Jessica Weldon, daughter of Bob and Cathy Weldon; Second Princess Tatiana Boecker, daughter of Bill and Maria Boecker; and Miss Congeniality Rachel Feldermann, daughter of Jim and Julie Feldermann. Like Meyer, each of them will be crowning their respective replacements on Sunday. Meyer said she’s excited about Sunday’s coronation but that “it will be kind of sad and bittersweet” for her and the rest of this year’s foursome to give up their crowns. Still, Meyer said they plan to make the event “fun.” Two of Meyer’s aunts, Molly Gerrish and Jane Meyer, are former Bar-B-Q Days princesses. Meyer’s great aunt, the late Paula (Melchior) Elder, was Miss Belle Plaine in 1970.

Don had been a resident of Walker for the past year. Services for Don will be held at a later date. He was born on June 6, 1955 in New Prague to Marcella (Busch) and Germain Herman (Bud) Druke of Belle Plaine. Don was the fourth and last of their children. After graduating from Belle Plaine High School he attended St. John University in Collegeville, MN, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. He remained close to his siblings who were devoted to him including his sister, Shirley Druke Fogarty (Mike) of Belle Plaine, brother, Bob Druke (Mary) of Richfield, and sister, Judi Druke Teske (Richard) of Arlington, VA.

BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA
Thirty Years Ago This Week
Belle Plaine’s 26th annual Bar-B-Q Days celebration was set for that coming Friday through Sunday with activities for everyone, according to Chairman Simon Haefner. The Kiddie Parade would begin things Friday evening and the Queen Coronation would conclude the festival Sunday night. Pat and Carol Fogarty would be grand marshals of the parade. The Reigning Miss Belle Plaine was Joanne Koenig, who would crown one of 22 candidates for her crown that year. The unemployment rate in Scott County continued to decline, according to the Minnesota Department of Economic Security. Unemployment in the county dropped to 4.2 percent compared to 7.5 percent the same time the year before. The Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine would be observing its 85th anniversary on July 25 with an open house from 3-7 p.m. Pastor Schlicht, administrator of the Lutheran Home, had recently published a 550page book called “The Care of the Soul,” covering the history of the Home in its relationship to the community. He would be autographing books for sale at the open house, which would include free beverages and brats. The Scott County Human Services Department successfully completed the move to its new headquarters on the third floor of the courthouse. Close to 150 county personnel were involved in the move. Four filed for the Scott County Board’s Fifth District commissioner seat being vacated by Rolland Boegeman. Those who filed were Savage Mayor Rod Hopp, John (Jack) Casey of Credit River Township, William Feidt of New Market and Norman Theis of Credit River Township. Belle Plaine area Commissioner William Koniarski’s seat was not up for election that year. Only one of three Carver County commissioner districts would have a contest that year. District 5 incumbent Earl Gnan of Benton Township would face a challenge from Dick Gutknecht of Young America Township. Medallion Kitchens, Inc., announced it would be relocating. The company issued a press release stating that it intended to relocate all of its production facilities to Waconia. Medallion would also relocate its corporate offices that were in Hopkins to the Waconia facility. Rick Rone, vice president of Medallion, said his firm planned to build a 94,000-square-foot building and employ about 250 people in its plant. Harriet Chard, 83, longtime resident of Belle Plaine, passed away on June 21. She was born and grew up in St. Paul. After her marriage to Arthur Chard, she resided on a farm in Belle Plaine Township until the death of her husband. She and her daughter, Phyllis, then moved to St. Paul. Jill Hoelz, 18, daughter of Roger and Helen Hoelz, was leaving to spend one year in Africa as a Rotary Exchange student. She would be staying with four different families near Johannesburg. If you were “itching” for some excitement, Henderson would be hosting its annual summer Mosquito Days Festival July 20-22. Sports tournaments and runs, a parade and queen coronation were all part of the celebration. The Belle Plaine town baseball team whipped Cologne 18-2 and edged Chaska 2-1 to clinch second place in the league standings. The Tigers stated

Belle Plaine’s 100th anniversary celebration was acclaimed by thousands as the town’s biggest three-day event. It was a great response to months of preparation carried out by General Chairman Tom Lynch and his able staff. The descendents of the Honorable Judge Andrew Gould Chatfield, former Territorial Judge of the territory of Minnesota and founder of the Borough of Belle Plaine, gathered at the home of Mrs. A.J. Irwin to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of Belle Plaine. Irene Bigaouette was Belle Plaine’s Centennial queen. Irene Holmquist, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Holmquist of Jordan, became the bride of Armin Koepp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Koepp of Belle Plaine. Dick Schense, son of Walter Schense of north of Blakeley, and Robert Quinn of Jessenland, were in a two-car crash near the Ed Bird farm two miles north of Henderson. Schense suffered an elbow injury, and Quinn had a severe cuts on the back of his head and elbow. Army worm infestation, which had caused concern in all the counties of the western half of the state, had spread to this lo-
cality. The worm was attacking the corn, the grain being generally cut. The farm on which army worms first appeared in Belle Plaine Township was the Lawrence Mueller farm. Mr. and Mrs. William Kewitsch of Le Center announced the marriage of their daughter, Norita, to Patrick John Blaschko, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alphonse M. Blaschko (nee Catherine Kane). Miss Darlene Sellnow, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sellnow of Blakeley, and Marvin Stock, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolph Stock, were married at Trinity Lutheran Church, Belle Plaine. While attending Sunday Mass at her parish church of Marystown, Mrs. Kathryn Barry, nee Hopster, was stricken with a heart attack and died. She was 66 years old. The body of Henry Berndt, 87-year-old Belle Plaine man, better known as Henry the Well-Digger, was found floating in the river. He had been the object of an intensive search for three days. The parish of St. Thomas joined with its pastor, Father

There was a “war” between gasoline companies and the local price was cut to 16 cents a gallon. There was no gas tax. Emil C. Karnitz took over the Ische dray line, purchasing the business and Ische residence. Victor Kahle, Belle Plaine boy who went to Chicago to play in the Chicago City League, had a batting average of .398, 12 home runs, eight triples and 38 doubles. Mr. and Mrs. Tony Leuwer and their five children arrived from Linton, N.D., for a visit in their old hometown. After 10 years as pastor at Union Hill, Father Raymond was transferred to the church at Jordan. Mrs. Henry Tonn, 52, died at her home in Blakeley Township. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. August Schultz, pioneer settlers. Former Postmaster E.E. Chamberlain and family were back from Glentana, Mont., for a vacation visit. E.E. was station agent at Sanford, Mont., while the family occupied the 640-acre ranch at Glentana. There was a surprise school election. Only two names appeared on the official ballot, but other ballots appeared at the election bearing names other than the two on the official ballot., and those were the most numerously voted ballots. The attorney general was asked for his opinion. Rev. John F. Curry, who had been pastor of St. Peter and Paul’s Church for 12 years, was transferred to Petoskey, Mich. The Belle Plaine ball team lost to Jordan 9-5 and went into third place in the league standings. An electric stop signal was installed by the railroad company at its Blakeley village crossing. Henry Fieder was down from Winnipeg, Canada, after an absence of many years. He planned to locate in the Twin Cities.

New rye was quoted at 27 cents and new wheat was 47 cents. The borough assessment went in on a very low valuation with expectation of a raise by the state. The total valuation was $138,235. Martin Kelleher and F.J. Whitlock were elected to fill the vacancies on the school board; 30 votes were polled. The Belle Plaine Court of the Independent Order of Foresters was organized with F.C. Irwin as head. The Scott County Board made a total tax levy of $24,300, of which $3,300 was for roads and bridges. !

Grandparents, Greg and Jayne Weiers, the Stuber grandparents, aunts and uncles attended. The New Prague Community Band will play a concert Saturday
at 2 pm at Cedar Lake Farm. A large gathering of former K Mart Distribution Center employees met for a reunion at Memorial Park in New Prague this past Saturday. There were more than 100 co-workers that met for a pot luck picnic and reminiscing of memories. It was great having a turn out that big, and even more special that so many friendships remain after we all had to go different directions to find jobs. The Distribution Center closed permanently in January of 2013. Humor Corner: A sign on the front lawn of the home read, “Talking dog for sale $10”. A man walking by stopped to inquire. “May I talk to your dog?” “Sure, he’s outside, his name is Rex.” Going outside he said to Rex, “Tell me about yourself.” “Well,” Rex said, “When I was young I served in the army, saving many lives. Then I had a job in Washington working closely with the president and congress.” “Oh my,” said the man, You are amazing.” So he went to the house and paid $10 asking, “Why are you selling him so cheap?” “Because,” said the seller “He is such a liar, he never did any of those jobs.”

Connie and Julie Odenthal, Buddie Callahan and his daughters, Jan and Judy, and Joe and Armella Holden enjoyed lunch in the main dining room at the Fishtale, Tuesday also. The funeral service for Lucille Hayden and
visitation for Denny O’Connell on this same day, put a damper on this usually festive occasion. This gathering started out in April as ”Dorothy Connelly’s party” many years ago. It was call Dorothy’s , but in reality it was many St. Thomas birthdays together. Now, the celebration is on the first Tuesday after the “Fourth of July”. Everyone present had a grand time. Congratulations to Karissa Kramer and Marc Tye who tied the knot Saturday in New Ulm. The groom is the son of John and Diane Tye who live on the former James and Mary Connelly farm where Marc and his brother Eric grew up. He doesn’t get back often, but Dan and Becky Graham of Jordan and friends Mark and Lori Pieper enjoyed an evening in Henderson on Saturday. Dan is the grandson of Ralph and Mildred Burns Graham. Nathan, Kara and Liza Olson are preparing to hear the pitter-patter of another pair of little feet after New Year‘s 2015. Nathan is Burns Olson’s lad and the grandson of Rosemary and the late Tim Burns. Andrew and Andrea Griep welcomed William Joseph Griep, born July 13, 2014 at 11 a.m. He weighed 8 pounds, 1 ounce and 20 inches of perfection. Mom, Dad and Little Will are doing grand. Willie’s grandparents are Brian and Luann Guertin and Tim and Jackie Griep. Dustin Gill, one of Aggie’s courageous grandsons, is employed with “The Kerfoot Canopy Tours” as the Sky Guy at the zip line place, between Henderson and Blakeley. Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, My friend got hit by 6 feet of water in her fully finished basement. I assisted her during the flood by taking multiple bags of mud-soaked laundry to the local Belle Plaine laundromat. I was met at the laundromat by a perfect stranger (I now know her as Renee, the owner). She began advising me on how to tackle the big project and then proceeded to plunk in all the quarters necessary to wash each load. She then handed me two cups filled with quarters to wash each load again! Twice!! Well, I initially had my doubts regarding the salvage ability of these items. My friend now has all her towels and clothing back in beautiful condition. One less thing for her to worry about. Thanks Renee. Susan Brown
Dear Editor, Vote for Marty Seifert on August 12 for the Primary election Why should you vote for Seifert? Seifert is the only candidate for governing who is from outside the Twin Cities. Seifert believes in lower taxes and a smaller government and less regulations on small businesses and agriculture. He is pro-life and strong families. He believes in fair funding for rural school districts compared to metro areas. He believes we should have better roads and bridges for the outlying area and no more billion dollar light rail projects. Vote for Seifert. Marlyn Post Jordan Citizen
Dear Editor, Alert driving improves safety for all road users The tragic death last week of a mother bicycling with her two young children in Rock County is a horrifying reminder that distracted driving is a growing problem in this state. According to the criminal complaint, the driver admitted to taking his eyes off the road to check his cell phone when he hit the bicycle and bike stroller. Driver inattention is a leading contributing factor in fatal crashes. Cell phones and other electronic devices are commonplace in our lives today. But using them while we are driving is unsafe, irresponsible and can be deadly. The Department of Public Safety reports one in four crashes is related to distracted driving, although such crashes are likely under-reported. Distracted driving was a contributing factor in 175 fatal crashes, resulting in 191 deaths from 2011 to 2013 in Minnesota. More than half of those crashes occurred in rural areas. Those fatalities cost Minnesota more than $269 million. In Minnesota, it’s illegal to text while driving and to access the web while in motion or part of traffic, including at a stop light or stop sign. It’s also illegal for drivers under the age of 18 to use a cell phone while driving. Citations for these offenses increased from 388 in 2008 to 2,189 in 2013. That’s an alarming trend that must be reversed. If you text while driving, on average you take your eyes off the road for up to 4.6 seconds out of every six seconds. That’s like traveling the length of a football field at 55 mph without looking up, according to

DPS. Using a cell phone while driving, whether hands-free or hand-held, delays a driver’s reactions as much as having an alcohol-concentration level of .08 percent. Safety campaigns by DPS and the Minnesota Department of Transportation remind drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians that we all have the same rights and responsibilities and that we all need to “share the road.” DPS, MnDOT and the Department of Health lead Minnesota’s Toward Zero Deaths program to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and deaths. Its mission is to create a culture for which traffic fatalities of all kinds are unacceptable. Distracted driving is unacceptable. The popularity of mobile devices and services, and the dangerous, and deadly, consequences of their use while driving, require each of us to make some personal decisions, whether we are driving, bicycling or even walking. Our personal decisions can save lives. It’s time for us to take that next step. We should turn off cell phones or place them out of reach to avoid the urge to answer. We should pledge to never text and drive. We should plan our trips in advance to avoid fiddling with a GPS device or application while driving. We should pull over to a safe location if we must look at a map. We should designate a passenger to help with directions or when using devices such as a GPS. We should speak up if we’re a passenger to stop drivers from distracted driving behavior. Distracted driving goes beyond just mobile devices. Anytime we take our eyes off the road, hands off the wheel and our minds off our driving, we’re putting lives at risk. Children should be taught the importance of good behavior in a vehicle. Drivers who have to tend to children are distracted drivers. So are drivers who are eating, drinking or grooming. Let’s all heed the lessons that too many Minnesotans learn the hard way. Let’s pay more attention to our driving, biking and walking. of emergency after heavy rains caused extensive flooding statewide, reached out to the Federal Highway Administration requesting additional help to repair flood-damaged Minnesota roads. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/ DOT) will make these funds available to local agencies to assist with cash flow, and to help expedite local flood-related road repairs. “The flood damage recently inflicted on Minnesota roads, highways and bridges has been severe and widespread,” Dayton said. “These funds will
speed up important repairs statewide.” Over the last several weeks, Dayton has visited flood-affected communities, including Belle Plaine, in more than a dozen counties to meet with local emergency responders and asses flood damage across Minnesota. During the Governor’s visits, local officials have frequently noted flood damage to local roads and bridges, emphasizing the need to repair that damage as quickly as possible. Mn/DOT repairs on state-owned infrastructure are already underway.
Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, Republican Race for Governor By The Numbers A four-way Republican primary race for governor has been launched between Jeff Johnson, the endorsed candidate, Marty Seifert, Kurt Zellers, and Scott Honour. Let’s examine what the numbers contained in the campaign finance reports released in June reveal about the future. Kurt Zellers has nearly 5% of individual contributions coming from out-of-state and $9,100 of total receipts coming from lobbyists and political committees. Zellers easily leads the pack in taking money from special interests. With a total of $110,796.99 in individual contributions and $154,305.98 in campaign expenditures, Zellers has spent 139% of what he has received in individual contributions. Even if we add in the $9,100 received from special interests and the $20,000 loan he gave himself, Zellers would still be running in the red. This is especially troubling given that Zellers did not participate in the Republican state convention. Zellers only saving grace is that his ending cash on hand of $94,827.45 places him third in the pack. My prediction is that Zellers will take the fourth place position in the Republican primary election on August 12. Scott Honour has 45% of individual contributions coming from out-of-state and foreign sources outside the United States. This calculation shows that while people in places such as Beverly Hills and Singapore want Honour to be governor, he does not have the support of Minnesotans. Scott Honour’s campaign expenditures total $325,925.17. Honour has blown a huge sum of money, especially given that he did not participate in the Republican state convention. With a to-

The U.S. Department of Transportation assured the State of Minnesota Thursday that the state will receive up to $5 million in “Quick Release” emergency relief funds to help fix the state’s flood-damaged roads. These funds, which will reimburse the state for emergency repair work done in the aftermath of statewide flooding, will supplement $750,000 in federal transportation funds the state received on June 23. tal of $254,949.98 in individual contributions Honour has spent 128% of what he has received in individual contributions. The only reason that Honour’s campaign is still functional is that he continues to loan himself hundreds of thousands of dollars to cover the shortfall. Honour’s cash on hand, which includes $300,000 in loans, is $226,733.14. This places him first in the pack in terms of cash on hand; however, it is important to note that without the $300,000 in loans Honour’s campaign would be bankrupt. My prediction is that Honour will buy himself the third place position in the Republican primary election on August 12. Jeff Johnson has a severe lack of individual contributions. Johnson received a paltry $42,678 in individual contributions. As the endorsed Republican candidate for governor this figure is pathetic. It reveals both a lack of support from Minnesotans and the inability to raise funds. Johnson’s campaign expenditures total $137,101.92, which reveals that he has spent 321% of what he has received in individual contributions. This puts Johnson dead last with cash on hand of $32,529.94. Johnson’s campaign expenditures read much like Honour’s with every type of wasteful and extravagant spending. The many thousands of dollars he spent on alcohol and hotel keys to woo delegates at the Republican state convention would certainly indicate this. He spent nearly his entire nest egg in order to gain the backing of the arguably broken, albeit fancy, political machinery of the state party. If Johnson’s non-campaign disbursements of $41,920.99 are included then he spent $179,022.91 or 420% of individual contributions in order to woo delegates and buy the endorsement of the state party. The rate at which he is blowing money boggles the mind. Between now and August 12, Johnson must fall back on the state party to see him through to the primary election and the state party is itself still in financial straights. And, there are no other big pots of money to be found. Organizations such as The Freedom Club and Minnesota Busi-
ness Partnership are withholding money from Johnson pending the outcome of the Republican primary election, which is sensible. Presumably, both organizations want to give money to the victor to use against Dayton as opposed to giving the money to an arguably weak endorsed candidate for use in fending off other Republicans in the primary election. My prediction is that with the help of the political machinery of the state party Johnson will take the second place position in the Republican primary election on August 12. Marty Seifert, the only rural candidate and the only candidate to travel to every county in Minnesota, received $120,852.93 in individual contributions, which is second only to Honour. All but one of Seifert’s individual contributions came from Minnesotans. He did not take any contributions from lobbyists and routinely refuses such contributions. His cash on hand is $104,345.28, which is second only to Honour. Seifert’s campaign expenditures total $145,927.79, which means that he spent 121% of individual contributions. By comparison, Johnson spent 321% of individual contributions, Honour spent 128% of individual contributions, and Zellers spent 139% of individual contributions. Given Johnson’s astronomical burn rate, the fact that Honour’s campaign would be presently bankrupt without hundreds of thousands of dollars in loans, and the amount of money that Zellers has spent without participating in the Republican state convention, Seifert is by far the most frugal candidate and knows how to get the best and biggest bang for his buck. This is especially true given that Seifert fully participated in the Republican state convention. When taking individual contributions, expenditures, and cash on hand in to consideration, Seifert stands the best chance of defeating Governor Dayton. My prediction is that Seifert, the maverick candidate, will take first place in the Republican primary election on August 12 and win the general election in November. Conservatively, Jim Kroger Assistant Professor

I realize that I have written before about the importance of reading by all students over the summer but I would like to put out one reminder about a great resource that we have in Belle Plaine – the Belle Plaine Public Library. Although I hope that all students are having a chance to enjoy summer, I also hope that part of your summer includes some reading. Reading for pleasure is a great way to continue to build reading skills and to ensure that reading skills do not diminish over the course of a long summer. Our public library has a great selection of books for all ages and great staff to help students find books that match their reading ability. Check out the Belle Plaine Public Library this summer. The library is located at 125 W Main Street in Belle Plaine and the phone number is 873-6767. You may also check out library hours and search for books at the library website – www.scott. lib.mn.us. Our local library, a branch of the Scott County library system is a great resource for all Belle Plaine residents. I hope that our students are using the library this summer! One of the major projects underway at our school buildings this summer is the upgrading of our wireless network and our overall network capacity. As we move forward with our 1 to 1 initiative with an iPad mini for each student, we want to ensure that we have adequate bandwidth and capacity on our network and work is underway to make sure that happens. We are fortunate to be able to partner with the Scott County Fiber Network for our internet access. The Scott County Fiber Network has been in place for over five years and provides a fiber backbone throughout the county connecting all county, city and school district buildings to fast, reliable internet access. Through the years, the capacity of the network has grown as demand bandwidth across all entities has increased. This fall, our capacity will increase significantly from the 108 MB of service that we currently have. One of the major improvements in our network will be making a fiber connection to the Oak Crest Elementary building. Previously, Oak Crest has connected to our network via microwave dish signal transmitted from near the high school. A new fiber connection to the Scott County Fiber along Highway 169 will provide more capacity and greater reliability with the service. Finally, our wireless network in all buildings will be improved through the deployment of additional wireless access points. In essence, there will be a wireless access point in every classroom as we begin the school year as compared to an every other room arrangement that was used in the past. I want to thank our tech department and our custodial department for all the work that they have been doing this summer to make these significant improvements to our network. I am excited for the new year to begin! As always, if you have any questions about school matters, please feel free to call me at 873-2400 or check our website at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us. You may also find me on Twitter at @BPTiger716. Go Tigers!

The Belle Plaine German Days Committee donated $3,000 from its charitable gambling proceeds toward the cost of this year’s Bar-B-Q Days Fireworks Display, which will occur Sunday evening. The total cost of the display, which is put on by RES Specialty Pyrotechnics of Derrynane Township, is $14,000. According to Bar-B-Q Days Fireworks Chair Jim Lange, that’s considerably less than what most other cities would pay because Belle Plaine is considered a home-base community. Pictured above are German Days Charitable Gambling Manager Theresa McDaniel and Belle Plaine Festivals and Events President Matt Fogarty. The rest of the cost of the annual display comes from other community fund-raisers, most notably Bar-B-Q Days.

Beer Garden Recycling
This year’s Bar-B-Q Days will be taking its first step to implement a recycling program. In the past, all cans, water bottles, cardboard and empty beer pitchers have been placed in the trash. This year, volunteers will be collecting the above items in the Beer Garden area only. This year’s beer cups cannot be recycled, but it is the hope of the recycling committee that beer cups purchased for the garden next year will be made of recyclable material and will be included as well. If all goes well, recycling could be expanded to the entire festival area next year.

Farmers Market Corner Beautiful weather continues for the Belle Plaine Farmers Market. Take a walk or a bike ride and check us out. The produce is coming in and more vendors are participating. Last week brought broccoli, green beans, potatoes, peas, lettuce and more. As the gardens catchup you never know what will be available. Expect more this week, including zucchini and cucumbers. Fresh-baked goods are also a staple at the market. A nice little treat is always good and you don’t have to do it yourself. Pickup something for you and more to share, too. The egg roll lady continues to surprise us with her delicious offerings. She’s always adding to the menu and it’s always something yummy. The Belle Plaine Farmers Market is held every Wednesday from 3:30-6:30 p.m. May through Oct. 15 at Court Square Park. Vendors are welcome! Today, the northern half of Scott County is becoming increasingly suburban. “You don’t see too many pastures anymore. You don’t see too many cattle out in pastures anymore.” That approach will continue this fall with Autumn Fair (Sept. 13), a show dealing with local food productions and ag. products the fair hosts. Pint’s wife, Lori, and Abby Neu of the U of M-Extension office are heavily involved in the event. After visiting other county fairs, Pint noticed the fairs are focusing more on entertainment and less on agriculture. A year ago, Ames led the installation of a Ferris wheel – Eli No. 12 -- at the fairgrounds. The county fair typically attracts an estimated 28,000 to 30,000 visitors. Pint would like to see that number grow to approximately 45,000 in the years to come. “We can’t do that by doing the same thing year after year,” he said. Pint is bringing a different background to the job. The Belle Plaine Township resident retired after three-plus decades of experience in law enforcement. He’s worked for the New Prague Police Department, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and the state’s Gambling Control Division. He finished his career in management. **Attention Faxon Township Property Tax Payers** Notice of Change to Estimated Market Values For 2014 Assessment (2015 Payable) For Property Tax Purposes By order of the Minnesota Department of Revenue Property Tax Division – The Commissioner of Revenue has ordered State Board Changes directing the Sibley County Assessor to increase the value of residential structures 5% in the Township of Faxon, which is to be applied to the 2014 Assessment estimated market values. This is an order of the State Board of Equalization and cannot be appealed to the Minnesota Tax Court. Again, this affects only residential properties with structures in the Township of Faxon. As a result, the values (for property tax purposes only) listed on the ‘Valuation Notices’ mailed to you this past spring are no longer accurate. This value will NOT match the value that has been ordered to be placed on these properties. The 5% increase to residential structures will be reflected in the new value that will appear on the ‘Truth in Taxation’ statements mailed to you this fall for taxes payable in 2015. You will not receive a new Valuation Notice. The Sibley County Assessor’s Office was not in agreement of this increase to values, but has been ordered to do so pursuant to Minnesota Statutes Section 273.061 subd 9(f). If you have any questions (ex. Did this affect my property? What is my new value?) please contact the Sibley County Assessor’s Office at (507) 237-4078 or send an email to assessor1@co.sibley. mn.us Published in the Belle Plaine Herald on Wednesdays, July 16 and 23, 2014.

NOT IC E Certificate of Need Application for Minnesota Pipe Line Reliability Project Minnesota Pipe Line Company, LLC (“MPL”) is planning to use available capacity on its newest pipeline - Line 4 (formally known as MinnCan) - to improve the overall reliability of its pipeline system (the “Project”). The MPL system is the primary pipeline system that supplies crude oil to the two Twin Cities refineries which produce much of the transportation fuels used in Minnesota and throughout the Upper Midwest. The Project is needed so that the two Minnesota refineries continue to have access to reliable and sufficient crude oil supplies to meet demand for transportation fuels. The addition of six pump stations to MPL Line 4 and upgrades at existing stations will allow the pipeline to operate at its original design capacity of approximately 350,000 barrels of crude oil per day when needed to meet demand. This Project will give MPL the flexibility to shift capacity to its newest pipeline in the event of an outage on other segments of the pipeline system. In addition, this Project will allow for MPL to conduct maintenance on other segments of the pipeline system as needed without disrupting crude supplies to the Twin Cities refineries. No new pipeline will be constructed during this project. In order to increase MPL Line 4’s capacity from approximately 165,000 barrels per day to approximately 350,000 barrels per day, MPL plans to construct six pump stations and upgrade existing stations. The new pump stations will be located in rural areas along the route in the counties of Hubbard, Wadena, Morrison, Meeker, McLeod and Scott. No new pipeline will be installed and no new pipeline right-of-way will be acquired for this Project. MPL Line 4 is already capable of handling the additional capacity, so additional work on these pump stations is the only construction necessary to complete the upgrade. If approved by the Commission, MPL intends for the Project to be completed by 2018. This notice is intended to provide the public with details about the reliability project and notify the public regarding how to participate in the Commission’s review process. The reliability project cannot be started until the Commission determines it is needed and issues a Certificate of Need. MPL’s request for a Certificate of Need is governed by Minnesota Law, including Chapters 7851, 7853, and 7855, and Minnesota Statutes, Section 216B.243. To get on the mailing list to receive official mailings related to this Project, send your request via mail to Cezar Panait at the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, 121 7th Place East, Suite 350, St. Paul, Minnesota 55101; by fax to 651-297-7073; or by email to cezar.panait@state.mn.us. Bricks for the Johns Workers from Countryside Construction of Belle Plaine started brickwork last week for the restroom and ticket-buying facility at the Belle Plaine Athletic Complex. Bob Denny of the Belle Plaine Lions Club, which is spearheading the project, said the facility should be complete before the start of the high school football season. The Lions Club is still looking for financial contributors for the $58,000 project, much of which has been raised. Donations can be submitted to State Bank of Belle Plaine (201 Main Street W., Belle Plaine, MN, 56011), CornerStone State Bank (406 Commerce Drive E., Belle Plaine, MN, 56011) or Belle Plaine Lions Club (P.O. Box 94, Belle Plaine, MN 56011).

party many, many years ago. I don’t even want to go into how I got it,” Bob said. Maureen used to drive a fourwheel bicycle in the parade to promote the former Brewery Creek Farm Market in Belle Plaine, where she worked for many years. Bob, 72, and Maureen, 68, were both raised on dairy farms. Bob has been a lifelong resident of the Blakeley community, while Maureen was raised in the Norwood Young America area. She is a 1963 graduate of Central High School in NYA. Bob, who attended Belle Plaine High School, left school early to go work on the farm after his father became ill. Bob is the son of Irene Kahle, who is 91. Maureen’s mother is Evelyn Ische, who is 89. Irene and Evelyn both live in senior facilities in Waconia. Bob’s and Maureen’s fathers – Merrill Kahle and Marvin Ische – are deceased. Bob and Maureen said they have been able to “scale back some” on farming with the help of their sons, Todd and Terry, and their wives Ann and Angie, respectively. There are also five grandchildren – Matt, Amelia, Dylan, Lilli and Addison. Amelia is a Bar-B-Q Days queen candidate this year. “Everyone (in the family) has been involved with farming one way or another,” Maureen said. “God made us farmers – plain and simple.”

Jonny B Adding Some Backyard Flavor to Bar-B-Q Days
A Message of Hope John and Carol Buszmann (left) of Belle Plaine released doves as ceremonial signs of hope in the fight against cancer during the opening ceremony Friday night at Shakopee Junior High School West. Carol Buszmann is a longtime cancer survivor. Over 30 teams of walkers and others helped raise almost $117,000 in the Friday-Saturday American Cancer Society fundraiser. Relay organizers expect post-event donations push the relay over the $120,000 mark.
Well over 100 children and adults relaxed while watching the movie, “Frozen, from the pool deck and floating on inner tubes and other devices at the Belle Plaine Municipal Pool Friday night. The film was presented just after dusk on a big screen built by Belle Plaine Schools’ Jeff Heine and Scott Renne. The $1 admission for the movie included popcorn and glow-sticks.

water or mud from entering the front of the building. Jeff Luskey and his partners felt fortunate. “We didn’t lose a house. We didn’t lose our building, Jeff said. “It did set us back, but we’re OK. Without power in the building or village, it wasn’t restored to the village until four days later, there was little that could be done. Jeff tried using a small portable generator but slipped on the floor as he carried it across the brewery. The slippery floor convinced the three men using volunteers to help clean the brewery was not a wise option. Luskey used water to loosen the hardened mud. He used a
squeegee to keep the mud out of the drains. Overall, Luskey and Fossen logged about 70 hours cleaning up the building. “We bought squeegees. The rest was labor, Jeff Luskey said. Once temporary power was restored, Fossen and Jeff Luskey finished the cleanup. The lost time has cost them work moving toward their goal of brewing beer. They’re hoping to have Scott County’s OK in time for fall brewing. In Jordan . . . Luskey knows others have it worse. In Jordan for example, brewery building owners Barbara Lee and Kevin Breeggemann recently learned the cost of repairing the bluff behind the building is estimated at a staggering $7.5 million. If the

hillside can be stabilized, the building needs about $50,000 worth of repairs, Breeggemann said Monday. “If we can’t get the hillside stabilized, the building can’t be saved, he said. The brewery building dates back to 1861. At a recent Jordan City Council meeting, Lee and Breeggemann discussed the state of the building that includes apartments and the bluffs with the city council. Lee and Breeggemann don’t have the money to repair the building and the bluffs and roads. They are looking for funding sources to help with the cost of repairs, the Jordan Independent recently reported. As for Lee and Breeggemann, they might find help available from the federal government in the form of tax credits and other aid. Councilor Tanya Velishek suggested the state may have some aid available via a special session of the legislature.
by Dan Ruud Jonny B wants you to “get completely sauced at Bar-B-Q Days this weekend. Jonny B (Jon Beberg), a native of South St. Paul who has lived in Belle Plaine the past few years, is the inventor of Jonny B’s Backyard Bar-B-Que sauce, which you will have the opportunity to try at this weekend’s Bar-B-Q Days. A tag phrase on the bottle says Get Completely Sauced With Jonny B’s Backyard Bar-BQue. You may already have had some of Jonny B’s sauce, which is used at Annie’s Cafe and Catering, Borough Bowl, Johan’s Sports Bar and Valley View Golf Course. Jars of it can be purchased at Borough Bowl, Rucks Meats, Jim’s Apple Farm and a dozen or so other places in Minnesota. “I’ve always been passionate about good food, especially barbecue. I’m a barbecue guy, so I decided to come up with my own sauce, Jonny B said. Jonny B, 46, said he developed his now trademarked recipe about seven years ago, selling his first bottle at Jim’s Apple Farm on Highway 169 a few miles north of Belle Plaine. “Bob and Renee Wagner (owners of Jim’s Apple Farm) are the first ones who suggested I sell it and they put some jars on their shelf about six years ago and it has sold well, Jonny B said. Jonny B, a 1986 graduate of South St. Paul High School, started concocting his recipe at a commercial kitchen in St. Paul a few years before moving to Belle Plaine. He now has three blends of the product – signature, hot and wing sauce. After moving to Belle Plaine, Jonny B, an avid bowler, made batches of his barbecue sauce in the Borough Bowl kitchen after hours. He has since left the sauce preparation and bottling to Full Service Foods in Hillsboro, N.D., which is a leader in the upper Midwest for less than truckload quantities of product for contract. Jonny B said his sauce is currently available at more than a dozen butcher shops and stores in Minnesota. His ultimate goal is to someday see Jonny B’s on the shelves at big box stores. Jonny B, who never attended a culinary school, said he’s “a self-taught guy, and joked that Bobby Flay of various food network channels is his “hero. Jonny B’s interest in cooking dates back to watching his grandma work in the kitchen. His aunt Dianne was one of his inspirations in developing his deep-fried tacos. He also has his own all-purpose seasoning. Jonny B said that while working in the fishing industry years ago, he had the opportunity to spend a lot of time in the barbecue-laden South. “I’ve been all over down there and I’ve have some of the best and worst barbecue there. There was this guy with a little shack and a cooker in the back with some of the best barbecue I’ve ever had. It’s all about putting a lot of love into your cooking. You have to be passionate about it. Jonny B added that one of the best barbecue sauces he’s ever had other than his own is a brand called Bone Suckin’ Sauce out of western North Carolina.
Jon Beberg of Belle Plaine will have his Jonny B’s Backyard Bar-B-Que sauce available to try at this weekend’s Bar-B-Q Days.
“If I was to use a sauce other my own, which I usually don’t, that might be it, Jonny B said. Jonny B has one daughter, Madison, 15, who attends Belle Plaine High School. He said his signature barbecue sauce goes over well with people of all ages. “It’s really kid friendly. They love it. They eat it on just about anything, Jonny B said. So do adults. “I put it on just about everything I grill. I’ve had friends tell me they dunk their potato chips in it, Jonny B said. The following was posted by Eric Amundson on Jonny B’s Facebook page. “If you like KC Masterpiece,
you will LOVE this (Jonny B’s) Signature Sauce. I have tasted both from the bottle, and this has a better thickness for BBQing, along with the extra tanginess KC is missing. AND, it’s from Minnesota! Please check it out. It’s AWESOME! Although the Bar-B-Q Days Beef Stand will still be serving its traditional barbecue-seasoned beef this weekend, squirt bottles of Jonny B’s Backyard Bar-B-Que sauce will be available to give your sandwich, or almost anything else you may be eating, an extra kick if you desire. More information and comments about Jonny B’s Backyard Bar-B-Que sauce can be found on its Facebook page.

We are at the half-way point of what most of us think of as summer. The summer reading program is over half way done. Are you and your young readers, among the many, making the most of your summer? We would like to help. Hiding from the gnats and mosquitoes with a good book has been working for many readers, myself included. I have been seeing a lot of people stocking up on books to take along for vacation reading material. I returned from the Independence Day weekend to a book drop that had over-flowed and poured out into the library. That is further evidence of good reading activity and responsible returns of materials when finished. One of our avid readers was kind enough to volunteer to help by picking the books up for me. It has been a good first half summer here at the library. I also read that July 16 is the birth anniversary of Ginger Rogers. If that name does not ring a bell, ask your parents or grandparents. Our DVD selection offers you the opportunity to revisit her movies or to discover somebody “new” if you did not recognize the name. Come to your library, pick up one of the DVDs, make a few graceful steps to your DVD player, twirl back to the sofa and prepare to be entertained. Here is a list of activities that are coming up. Check our website or stop in at the library for more details. Today Wednesday July 16 at 1:30 p.m. the Professor Prchal Science Program will be in town. Join “Professor Prchal” and his sidekick for a fun-filled science show filled with handson activities and new science demonstrations that leave you wondering how it happened! Our Storytime on Friday, July 18 at 10:30 a.m. will have a Big and Slow Theme. The “Fur Trade Re-enactment” with Arn Kind from the Minnesota Historical Society Program is on Tuesday, July 22at 10:30 a.m. Teen Book Club at Tuesday, July 22, 4 p.m. Remember there is pie to eat with discussion of your favorite book you just read. Tuesday, July 22, evening at 5 p.m. we will be setting up for the Belle Plaine Friends of the library Book Sale. If you have paid your dues for 2014 please come help us set up and be the first to go through the books as you are taking them out of the storage boxes and placing them in order on the tables. The Book Sale is on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday during library hours. Free will donations are accepted. Money will go towards a mural that we would like to paint on the wall over in the Juvenile area. Some features on our Scott County Library System web page are meant to assist parents in keeping their young readers busy with the Summer Reading Program. Stop in or go online for information. Credit River Antique Tractor Club members John Riesgraf (left) and Terry Muelken will have tractors on display this weekend Friday-Sunday (July 18-20) at the club’s show at Cedar Lake Farm Regional Park (400 260th Street W.) just north of New Prague.
Love of Antique Tractors Brings Collectors, Enthusiasts Together
Terry Muelken is in reasonably good health these days. But just in case, his wife Barb, a Belle Plaine native, has his obituary ready to go. It’ll read, he jokes, “Terry died. Tractors for sale.” With any luck, the former Barb Trimbo won’t have to worry about what to do with the 20-some-odd tractors from the 1940s, ’50 and ‘60s her husband keeps on their property in Credit River Township. After all, members of the Credit River Antique Tractor Club like John Riesgraf will be stopping by Muelken’s house Wednesday night to work on the club’s latest project. “We have a lot of guys who know something. Nobody knows everything,” Muelken said. Riesgraf, a former Belle Plaine resident who used to operate Johnson & Riesgraf Trucking from 1977-‘84, is one of the Credit River Antique Tractor Club members who’ll be at the club’s annual tractor show Friday-Sunday (July 18-20) at Cedar Lake Farm Regional Park (400 260th Street W.) just north of New Prague. Like admission, parking is free. The show will feature dozens

of antique tractors on display, antique farm equipment on display, engines, a tractor parade daily at 1 p.m., a blacksmith, rope making, crafts, flea market, crafts, beer garden, food vendors plus raffle tickets for a 1952 Massey-Harris Pony tractor. The drawing will be Oct. 4, 1 p.m., at the Credit River Township Hall. Muelken’s collection is primarily Allis-Chalmers. He’ll bring 10 of them to the show. Which 10? “Whichever 10 start,” he said. It’s not that he has a thing for orange. Muelken honors the memory of his father, Clarence. He bought the farm in 1940 and passed away on his birthday 34 years later. His first tractor was an Allis-Chalmers. The elder Muelken never owned more tractors than he absolutely needed. What would he think of his son’s collection? “He’d think I’m nuts,” Terry said. Today, he and Barb have an agreement. “Every time I get a new tractor, she gets a new diamond. She doesn’t care about tractors, but she does care about diamonds.” Riesgraf, who grew up on the farm near Jordan, owns only one tractor – a 1943 Ford N.
He bought it in 2011 and has done plenty of work on it since. Brakes, wiring, oil leaks and the motor have all received his close attention over the years. The tractors the two men own are as much a part of their history – the Ford was the first tractor Riesgraf was allowed to drive as a boy – as they are the proximity of dealerships. “You owned the tractor that had the closest dealer,” Muelken said. “In Belle Plaine, there a lot of John Deeres around because there’s a dealership there.” “And back then, you didn’t buy it until you could pay for it,” Riesgraf said. Tractors were simpler back then. Today, they are almost a farmer’s office on wheels, complete with GPS and on-board computers, air-conditioning and communication tools. “Back then, they were much simpler, just a few gears and a motor and go,” Muelken said. They hope people will come to the show and enjoy looking at the tractors many collectors proudly present. The club is accepting members and would love to see more enthusiasts from the Belle Plaine area join its ranks. For more information, about the club, call Muelken at (612) 616-1738.

Tigers Keep Pedal Down in RVL by Brett Kruschke and Matt Schultz The Belle Plaine town Tigers baseball team improved to 7-2 in River Valley League play Sunday after a 9-0 dismissal of Chanhassen, improving to 9-11 on the season. Saturday’s game at Le Sueur was rained out and has been rescheduled for Thursday, July 24 at 7:30 p.m. Jordan sits at 8-0 in RVL play, and if the Tigers hope to lay claim to the division title, they almost certainly will have to topple the Brewers when the teams meet 7:30 p.m. Thursday night at the Mini-Met. The Brewers won the season’s first game in Tigertown on June 29 by a 9-7 count. The Tigers will try to lay off the milkshakes this weekend at Bar-B-Q Days before hosting Waconia on Cambria Night at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday. Also a note on Coborn’s Night from June 27: fans donated 91 pounds of food and $92 in cash donations – representing 224 pounds of food – to the Belle Plaine Food Shelf. Thanks fans and Coborn’s. Speaking of Bar-B-Q Days, make sure to look for a float
featuring the 1994 state champion Belle Plaine Tigers at Saturday’s parade. The Tigers will not be throwing anything out to the crowd, however, for fear of missing the cutoff man. Dan Huber, Shawn Larson and Matt Schultz represented the Tigers in Gaylord Friday at the eighth annual RVL-DRS All-Star Game. The DRS won 7-1 for their first victory since 2007, while the RVL won the home run contest, 15-11. The Tigers went hitless on the evening and Larson also pitched a frame in the losing cause. Tigers 9, Chanhassen 0 The Redbirds flew into town to take on the Tigers, who were well rested after a week off between games due to a rainout. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect, and thanks to a few homemade remedies, the gnats weren’t bad, either. With Saturday’s rainout, Ryan Diers was on the hill for the Belle Plaine and he didn’t disappoint in his second straight start. The lefty worked out of a first-inning jam and didn’t look back from there. The Tigers scored two runs in the first inning and that would prove to be
all they needed, with pitching and defense doing the work. The Tigers scored in five of their eight at-bats. Diers threw seven innings, giving up four hits and striking out seven. August Farruggia threw the eighth, giving up no runs and striking out two. Dan Huber closed the game and struck out one man in a scoreless ninth. Matt Schultz led the way at the plate with two doubles and three RBI. Six other Tigers had one hit apiece. Huber was happy to raise his on-base percentage by getting hit by two pitches and narrowly missing a third plunking. 2014 Town Tigers Schedule May 2 vs. St. Ben. Let the Games Begin Olivia Hendel threw the ceremonial first pitch to her brother, Josh, during the opening ceremony of the inaugural ‘Andyman’ Baseball Tournament at Fritz Field in Cologne Friday afternoon (July 11). The tournament was in memory of Andy Hendel, who took his own life Jan. 22, 2012. The tournament raised awareness of teen suicide and money to help schools and people help teens in crisis. Proceeds of the tournament will go toward participating schools’ efforts to help prevent teen suicide. The Belle Plaine team won the U-15/16 bracket. “Team Andy of Cologne won the U-17/18 bracket. Plans are underway for next year’s tournament.
Jordan OKs Soccer Program
Although it may be awhile until soccer gains a foothold in the Minnesota River Conference on the scale of football or volleyball, but in Jordan, soccer is getting started. The school board there approved the addition of soccer to the fall sports beginning this fall. It will be run through the Jordan Community Education department and will begin on Monday, Aug. 18. Practices for student-athletes in ninth through 12th grades begin Monday, Aug. 18 after school: 3:30 to approximately 5:30 p.m. The season will go from mid-August to mid-October. Practices will be three to four days a week with one or two games a week. The schedule will consist of approximately 10 games and a few scrimmages. It will be a mix of junior varsity and ‘C’ team games. This activity will not have the opportunity to letter in 2014, the Jordan Independent recently reported. The school board hopes to expand the program to middleschoolers in 2015. The program will start out as
developmental, but teams will play to be competitive in all games. Although Jordan Community Education will administer the program, Minnesota State High School League rules still apply. Coaches have yet to be hired. When a coach is named they will help to establish some summer training sessions for potential team members. A parents meeting will be held in August to establish all program expectations and schedules. Cost is $250 per student-athletes and includes game socks,
