During a workshop Monday night (June 17), the city council unanimously approved contributing up to $15,000 for its share of funding for architectural drawings and community survey costs on the proposal. The city created the limited public forum in February after weeks of boisterous protests from veterans who argued the presence of a cross on a memorial to a fallen soldier kneeling over the grave of a fallen comrade did not constitute a breach of the separation of church and state in a public park. Interim City Administrator Dawn Meyer and Mayor Chris Meyer (no relation) decided to place the proposal to eliminate the forum on the city council’s consent agenda Monday after consulting with local veterans. right pleasant during last weekend’s 59th Bar-B-Q Days festivities. The only blemish in the weather was Saturday’s mid90s high-60s dewpoint humidity which pushed the feels-like temperature into triple digits. The heat may have played a role in lower-than-usual sales in the beer garden and beef stand. “Other than the heat, the weather was great. The parade was very well attended,” said Jean Murphy, Belle Plaine Festivals and Events’ coordinator. The beef stand had total sales of $31,786.25 compared to $38,226.17 last year. Sandwiches cost $3.50 apiece, the same as in recent years. The beer garden, where the cost of most beverages was similar to last year, had sales totalling $57,362.25, which was up from $48,180.50 last year. The totals for this year are preliminary gross sales and do not yet have all of the expenses calculated to determine profits. apartment charging workforce rents from $850 per month for a single-bedroom apartment to $995 for a two-bedroom apartment, an investment in housing estimated at $2.7 to $3 million. The council voted 3-2 Monday (July 17) against the comp. plan amendment, with councilors Paul Chard, Ben Stier and Theresa McDaniel opposing the request. Chard argued for holding off on a decision. He wanted to determine if an abbreviated, staged extension of East State Street was possible. An extension could eventually link up with Old Highway 169 Boulevard to the east, allowing trafďŹ c from the apartment building to utilize the intersection of East Main Street and Old Highway 169 Boulevard. Chard encouraged Schrom and Ed Fogarty, a representative of the Fogarty family trust, to work on an alternative. The extension would ideally open more multi-family land north of the proposed extension, Chard said. His request prompted the city delay rejecting the rezoning request. Neighbors opposed the proposed rezoning, arguing the apartment would generate too much trafďŹ c and would not blend in with the residential neighborhood to the west of the proposed site. Brian Grant, who lives at 781 State Street E., argued the building would generate over 100 additional vehicles driving through the neighborhood each day. Ray Knutson, who lives at 820 State Street E., said the building is not necessary. He fears it will draw more multi-family housing to the area, ruining the peaceful atmosphere of the area. Knutson said his family moved to an area that was largely agricultural 15 years ago. He’d be more willing to accept the commercial use the proposed site currently carries than an apartment building. Neighbors also suggested Genesis Growing Solutions’ anhydrous ammonia tanks could endanger families living in the apartment with young children. Councilor Cary Coop noted the ammonia tanks are an attractive nuisance Genesis has been aware of since development began inching eastward toward the co-op years ago. Mayor Chris Meyer argued that trafďŹ c and the other undesired impact of development neighbors objected to would likely occur, regardless of whether the property developed residentially or commercially. If Schrom and Fogarty and the other players involved in the proposed development can’t work out a solution, the council may reject both the comprehensive plan amendment and rezoning. City staff will need to generate written reasons for the rejection should the council ultimately reject both requests.

A park dedicated to honoring the commitment and sacriďŹ ces of soldiers, particularly those from the Green Isle area, is making the jump from concept to reality. Monday (July 17), a group of volunteers and city council members broke ground on the ďŹ rst phase of a memorial on city-owned land along highways 5/25. The monument will include three agpoles, one at 35 feet tall and the other two at 30 feet tall. They will likely host the American ag on the taller agpole and the Minnesota State and Prisoner of War (POW)/Missing in action (MIA) ags on the two shorter agpoles, said Mike Vos, one of the directors with the Green Isle Lions’ Club. Paver block and some retaining wall block will surround the agpoles, Vos said. The poles and landscaping are expected to cost about $10,000. The Lions Club is funding the project as a legacy donation celebrating the 100th anniversary of Lions Clubs International. A possible second phase of the project installed in the years to come could include additional paver stones dedicated to area veterans and other plaques honoring veterans, Vos said. The triangular-shaped parcel is located across the highway from the UFC convenience store. , which was donated by the city

council. The memorial will be in the southern portion of the parcel. The city is retaining the rest of the parcel for potential economic development. The council most recently discussed the memorial during its July 11 meeting. The park, known as Green Isle Veterans’ Park, is the former home of a gasoline and service station known locally as the Freudenthal property across from the UFC Convenience store. The city acquired it through property tax forfeiture.

city’s economic development authority. It also states once a lot has been sold, construction must begin within 180 days of closing. If construction does not begin within 180 days, the lot reverts back to the city and the purchase price, minus closing costs, will be repaid to the buyer. The policy also states closing must occur four months from the signing of a purchase agreement. It also says the buyer and city must also abide by a developer’s agreement approved by the city council.

In other action at the July 11 meeting, the Green Isle City Council: • Paid bills totaling $15,826.68. • Discussed various potential violations of city nuisance ordinance and actions to promote compliance by property owners. • Granted Sheldon Mathews an extension (until Oct. 1) to relocate a dirt pile on land in the city’s industrial park. The city granted Mathews time to relocate the pile after he donated about $6,000 worth of time and labor to improving Lions’ Park. • Discussed eliminating one of the city council’s two monthly meetings. Timely approval of paying bills is among the issues the proposed change could impact if the council opted to meet only once a month. • Discussed the amount of a potential raise for the city’s parttime public works worker, Kirby Kroells. In its effort to promote economic development, Green Isle also formalized the price at which it will sell vacant lots in its industrial park at its July 11 meeting. Councilors unanimously OK’d a policy setting the price at $1 per lot, the buyer creates two or more full-time equivalent (FTE) jobs based in the city of Green Isle. If the sale of the lot creates two or more FTEs, but the positions are not based in Green Isle, the policy states the lot’s sale price will be $5,000. If the company buying the parcel does not create two FTEs, regardless of where the jobs are based, the property will be sold at its assessed value. The policy came to the council with the recommendation of the

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, Our Belle Plaine Vets Club houses several service organizations: The Veterans of Foreign Wars, The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, The American Legion, The American Legion Auxiliary and The Sons of The American Legion. As patriotic veterans organizations we are devoted to mutual helpfulness. Our organizations are committed to mentoring youth and sponsoring wholesome programs in our community. We advocate patriotism and honor and promote strong national security. We are nonpartisan and not for proďŹ t. The word “nonpartisanâ€? is in each of our mission statements. Nonpartisan means we are unbiased, impartial, neutral and objective. While the majority of our members are Christian, we do not and will not exclude any service members or their families because of their political or religious beliefs. Members of each of our organizations have met with our City leaders. Collectively we have determined it is in everyone’s best interest to relocate “Joeâ€?. We, the Vets Club and Belle Plaine City OfďŹ cials, are deeply saddened at this. Veterans Park was established by the City of Belle Plaine to honor our service members and their families. It is a place for reection, not a religious battle ground. The First Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, ensuing that there is no prohibition of the free exercise of religion. We can not claim to be defenders of the Constitution and exclude people because of their religion or lack thereof. Due to numerous threats of violence and destruction of property, we the Vets Club, concur with the City’s decision to relocate “Joeâ€? from Public to Private Property and to close the public forums.

We sincerely thank all persons who so passionately support our mission to serve Veterans. Please continue to honor our servicemen and women by enjoying your freedoms and respecting the freedoms of others. Respectfully, Larry Ruehling. VFW Post #6202 Commander/Vets Club President Tricia Burmeister VFW Auxiliary #6202 President Walter Koepp American Legion Post #144 Commander Molly Moonen American Legion Auxiliary Unit #144 President Albert Koepp Sons of the American Legion Unit #144 Commander Dear Editor, The story line in Belle Plaine has been about freedom of speech and religion. Those concepts, while important, miss the point. Many, if not most, folks think playing around with occult practices is a harmless pastime. At one time that is how I felt, but I have changed my mind as I learned more. Experimenting with the occult puts a person at grave risk. Therefore, in my opinion, the issue is not either of the above constitutional freedoms, it is about safety. Last month, I released a book inspired by real life events about two teens who are intrigued by the occult and experiment with various forms of demonology. The result is disastrous. It’s not an issue of money for me, I’m doing okay. Anyone who wants to read the book in electronic form can email me for a copy at no charge. Learn about the inherent dangers, then make a decision about where you stand. Respectfully, Jim Koepke Bloomington, MN

Judith (Mehn) Jakoby, who is a fourth cousin to Fran’s children and Judith’s husband Uve Jakoby and their children Melissa and Mateo asked to “be Minnesotans” during their stay. Fran and family took them to the candy store in Belle Plaine, the Shells Brewery in New Ulm, a Minnesota Twins game, the Mall of America, and a visit to Roger and Patty Weiers

farm. Family time together ended with Sunday Mass at St. John’s, a visit to the cemetery and picnic dinner at the Barten home Edna and Flavian Weiers were a great addition to the dinner conversation as both speak fluent Deutsch. The Barten family was successful in connecting with Judith’s father, Franz Mehn, in Lieser via Facetime. Laughter and tears were exchanged. Adults and children enjoyed a rousing baseball game. There is a strong family connection between the Mehn family and the Barten family. Thirty some years ago, through a stranger, both families learned the other existed. Letters and phone calls resulted in Franz Mehn (who is a third cousin to Edna Barten Weiers, Genevieve Barten Metzdorff, Harriet Barten Giesen, Darlene Barten O’Brien, the late Roman Barten, and Noreen Barten Seurer) and his wife Rita and children Judith and Uve coming to America and staying with the Roman Barten family. Over the years the bonds became stronger as the Mehns attended a Barten family reunion at Union Hill, and also attended an international Barten reunion in Branson, Missouri. Most of Roman’s children visited the Mehn family at their home in Lieser, some several times, and Fran and her son Joseph visited in Lieser 3 years ago. There is no language barrier between these two families. In Germany students are required to study English and many of the Barten family studied the German language in high school. Though there is on ocean separating them, both families agree this bond is like brothers and sisters. Humor Corner: Ole’s idea of a good 7 course dinner is a ring of baloney and a 6 pack of beer.

Family and friends gathered at the home of Lynette Koepp for the annual Bar-B-Q Day

parade party. Even in the heat, a good time was had by all.

St. Thomas by: Loni Graham Upcoming Masses at St. Thomas with Father Roger Hessian: August 5 @ 5 p.m., September 9 @ 5 p.m.; and July 29 at 4 p.m. with Father James Burns. Father Andrew Stueve celebrates Mass at St. Anne’s, in Le Sueur on Saturdays at 5:15 p.m., and Sundays at 8 and 10:30 a.m. St. Thomas Ladies gather at the Fishtale, the second Tuesday in July every year and this year was no exception. Lynn Regan was the M.C., Lynn modestly mentioned her sisters, Jean, Ann and cousin Joan, “did all the work”. Lots of hugging, laughing and stories. A 1960’s picture of 20 St. Thomas folks was circulated among the ladies for identification. Four winners… and caught the name of only one winner, Mary Catherine Connolly knew all in the photo. Brigid Tuck was in Washington DC last week participating in the National Extension Leadership Development program. Brigid is one of three Minnesotans in the program. The goals are to develop future leaders within Extension, to gain understanding of national issues, and develop networks across Extension. She met

with Senator Al Franken’s staff and with Congressman Tim Walz. And on her flight out, she sat next to Governor Mark Dayton! What a beautiful day it was to celebrate their annual Father’s Day golf outing at the Legacy Course in Faribault on Friday! Dick O’Connell, daughter Christi Reinicki and grandson Jackson wore green to bring them luck, but that did happen? They all enjoyed Christi’s belated Father’s Day gift. Corrine Connelly’s 60th birthday was celebrated July 13 at the Ballpark with about 70 close friends and relatives. Served Corrine’s favorite beverage, “Dr. Pepper”, and guests munched on her favorite candy, “M&M’s”. The highlight was the release of 60 brilliantly colored balloons. Alvin Chlan’s school bus, number 16, is being retired, but not Alvin. Alvin has picked up and delivered New Prague students on the east side of St. Thomas for many years. Alvin and son Timmy, also a bus driver, are great concertina players. Sam Burns left Monday, July 17. He’s headed to Israel for a year of studies. Good luck, Sam! That’s all, have a good one, folks.

Ready, Aim, Fire During a recent visit home, Cologne native Jeff Worm and his father, Greg (not pictured) stopped by the new disc golf course in Lions’ Park in Cologne. Volunteers from the Cologne Lions recently installed the baskets as part of ongoing efforts to improve the park.

It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. Former B.P. Man Subject of U.S.Canadian Manhunt

Law enforcement officers across the United States and in Canada are on the lookout for Kevin Johnson, a Le Center resident who did not register as a sex offender after his release from prison. Johnson had been convicted for third-degree criminal sexual conduct for assaulting his wife at her Belle Plaine home in 2015. Le Sueur County deputies went to see Johnson after a family member requested a welfare check on him last month, said Nick Greenig, chief deputy of the Le Sueur County Sheriff’s Office. Belle Plaine police were also asked to check on his condition. The house was identified by the Minnesota Department of Corrections as a place Johnson might but was vacant, said Belle Plaine Police Chief Tom Stolee.

The family member indicated Johnson did not show up for work in three days and reportedly had not been taking his medication. A vehicle Johnson borrowed was located in northern North Dakota, specifically in Pembina County near a U.S.-Canadian port of entry. “Everything we’ve investigated thus far indicates he probably crossed over the border,” Greenig said. Johnson is wanted on three felony counts – allegedly failing to update his address and change of employment, failing to register as a sex offender and failing to send in a verification letter. “There’s a nationwide warrant out for him. That’ll remain open until we find him,” Greenig said.

Youth Softball

B.P. 12U Black Softball Team Headed to Northern Nationals The team has enjoyed success against local and area competitions. Now a group of Belle Plaine youth softball players wants to see how they stack up against some of the best competition in the region when they travel to Eagan this weekend for the North American Fastpitch Association’s Northern Nationals Softball Tournament. The tournament begins tomorrow (July 20) and runs through Sunday. Belle Plaine’s 12U Black team is guaranteed five games in the tournament. Its first game is at 8 a.m. The team’s players – seventh- and eighth-graders -- said they want to finish among the top 10 teams in the 100-plus-team field.

Belle Plaine earned the berth in the national tournament’s northern region by winning the St. Peter tournament May 2021. The team finished second in the May Day Tournament May 6 in Belle Plaine. The team also competed in a Shakopee Father’s Day Tournament, as well as the state qualifying tournaments and competed at state. Belle Plaine competed well but did not place in the top three at those tournaments. Overall, the Belle Plaine 12U team’s record is 6-9. The team’s members see their resiliency and camaraderie as their collective strengths. Other Belle Plaine fast-pitch softball teams posted solid re-

cords this summer. The 10U Red team finished at 11-1 and the 10U Black team won 12 of its 13 games. The 12U Red team finished at 12-2. The 12U Black team’s players include Sydney Brown, Abby Dalchow, ShyAnne Dieter, Ciara Fahey, Savanna Flaten, Bailey Kerkow, Mackenzie Murphy, Shaylee Rademacher, Kenzie Nordby, Lari Ruud, and Brianna Swenson. Brent Jaeger and Kaylee Hentges coach the team, with Kane Nordy handling the scorebook. The last time a team from the Belle Plaine Fast-pitch Association went to nationals was in 2011 with a 10U team.

American Legion Baseball

Tigers Back in Action Friday After three games last weekend, the Belle Plaine American Legion Baseball Team will return to district tournament play this weekend hoping to fight its way back to the title game through the losers’ bracket.

The Tigers will face the loser of the Plato-Watertown game Friday (July 21, 4:30 p.m.) in Waterville. A win would advance Belle Plaine to a Saturday game (July 22, 11 a.m.). Last weekend, Belle Plaine

defeated Southwest Christian, 3-2, Saturday morning (July 15) in the opening round of district tournament play. The Tigers then fell to Goodhue, 5-4. The Tigers rallied and defeated Sibley East, 11-5.

Forum (continued from page 1) to soldiers in the limited public forum area. “The original intent of providing the public space was to recognize those who have bravely contributed to defending our nation through their military service. In recent weeks and months, though, that intent has been overshadowed by freedom of speech concerns expressed by both religious and non-religious communities,” according to a press release the city issued Monday night. “The debate between those communities has drawn significant regional and national attention to our city, and has promoted divisiveness among our own residents. While this debate has a place in public dialogue, it has detracted from our city’s original intent of designating a space solely for the purpose of honoring and memorializing military veterans, and has also portrayed our city in a negative light.” Larry Ruehling, commander of the Belle Plaine VFW Post, said veterans accept the decision to eliminate the limited public forum they previously supported. The Gregory family removed the small monument known as “Joe” from the limited public forum space Friday (July 14). “If it keeps the others out, we’re satisfied,” Ruehling said. Veterans also feared Joe might

Flagpoles in the park were recently vandalized, but Belle Plaine Police Chief Tom Stolee said there is no proof the recent acts of vandalism to flagpoles can be linked to the debate over the limited public forum. “It’s gotten so out of hand,” Ruehling said.

Saturday Rally

As the Bar-B-Que Days Parade was beginning on Main Street Saturday (July 15), a group of Christians, perhaps 150 strong, arrived in Veterans’ Memorial Park to support Christian memorials to men and women who served their country in the military. The group prayed the rosary and sang religious hymns. As Saturday’s rally began, Jean Weymier of West Bend, Wis., sprinkled holy water around Veterans’ Memorial Park. Her intent was to cleanse it from the evils of Satan. “There should never be a Satanic memorial anywhere in this country. Satan hates us. Satan is the antithesis of religion,” Weymier said. She said America was founded on freedom of religion, but that freedom has no place for Satanic worship. “Freedom does not give us the freedom we want, but the freedom to do what we ought to do.” On the other side of the small park, a small group of men and women representing Minnesota’s Left Hand Path, a handful

most Tigers this season. Los Tigros went pitcher-bycommittee with Mitchel Stier, Chase Emmers, Carsen Ladd, Jonny Vinkemeier, and Jonathan Schmidt all seeing mound action. The poor play exhibited against St. Peter – a 13-9 loss July 9 – continued with a pair of errors and 16 hits yielded. A scoreless game entering the home half of the third frame was a 9-2 Cardinal advantage after four innings, essentially settling the matter. Aiden Ladd continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 with a double and a home run while posting the Tigers’ only multihit effort. Tyler O’Brien, Matt Schultz and Ryan BremsethVining collected the other hits – all singles. of people primarily dressed in black, enjoyed a casual picnic. They gathered in support of placing a stone Satanic monument in the park, one that honors veterans regardless of religion. James, a 26-year-old Savage resident who spent time during his teen years living with his stepfather in Jordan and Belle Plaine, believes the diversity of opinion is good. He was disappointed the city council planned to eliminate the limited public forum area. “Everybody deserves their opinion. You can’t say, give me rights but you can’t have any,” he said. “This is what they wanted, to have a monument. We just want the same thing they want.” He said the biggest misconception of Left Hand Path is that the group’s members don’t worship Satan by sacrificing goats or aspire to live a life of evil. He doesn’t consider himself a Satanist or an atheist. “I just believe everybody should be treated fairly,” he said. Standing 30 yards away, amidst a group of Christians, Juls Robbins, a Belle Plaine resident wearing her father’s dog tags, was upset two outof-town groups were using the issue to promote their opposing religious viewpoints. “It’s really sad this had to turn into a religious thing. They just wanted to honor vets,” she said.
