Miss Belle Plaine Rachael Eliason

Rachael Eliason is New Miss Belle Plaine by Dan Ruud Rachael Eliason got caught off guard Sunday afternoon when she was crowned Miss Belle Plaine for 2016. “I was extremely surprised. I actually couldn’t believe it for a while. It was very exciting,” said Eliason when recounting the crowning moment. Eighteen hours was more than enough time for it to sink in. That’s how long it was before Eliason and the rest of the new royal court were on their way to the cities for a royal clothing shopping spree on Monday. The rest the royal court for the coming year consists of First Princess Makayla Anderson, daughter of Troy Anderson and Rhonda Anderson; Second Princess Alyssa Neisen, daughter of Dan and Lori Neisen; and Miss Congeniality Hailey Witt, daughter of Troy and Tracy Witt. All were crowned by their respective predecessors – Miss Belle Plaine McKenzie Koepp, First Princess Kali Gorman, Second Princess Haley Johnson and Miss Congeniality Nicole Bauleke.

Like the rest of the new royal court, Eliason, the daughter of Mike and Keren Eliason, will be a senior at Belle Plaine High School this fall. She will be the captain of the school’s varsity dance team, and is also a member of the school’s Tiger Target Team and Tiger Pals. She’s working this summer for the school district’s Kids Company day care program. She’s also a longtime member of River Rock Church. “That’s my hometown church,” said Eliason. “They’ve been very super supportive of me.” Eliason also wanted to give a “huge thank you” to her sponsor, CornerStone State Bank. Even though she still has a year of high school ahead of her, Eliason said she plans “to get a head start on college” this year as a Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) student at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato. Her brother, Nick Eliason, will be a senior at the University of St. Thomas.

It was summery but far from downright hot for this past weekend’s Bar-B-Q Days celebration in Belle Plaine, making for comfortable conditions from the start of festivities Friday evening through Sunday’s fireworks display. The only blemish in the weather was a thunderstorm that rolled though town late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. That was a major factor to lower than usual sales in the Beer Garden for a Saturday night. The Beef Stand had total sales of $38,226.17 compared to $36,413.95 last year. Sandwiches cost $3.50 apiece, the same as in recent years. The Beer Garden, where the cost of most beverages was similar to last year, had sales totalling $48,180.50, which was down from $56,757.65 last year. Carnival ride sales this year totalled $61,936.00, up from $59,034.50 last year. The totals for this year are preliminary gross sales and do not yet have all of the expenses calculated to determine profits. Beef Sales Friday $9,347.95 Saturday $16,826.52 Sunday $12,051.70 Total $38,226.17 2015 Total $36,413.95 Beer Garden Sales Friday $12,979.50 Saturday $19,130.00 Sunday $16,071.00 Total $48,180.50 2015 Total $56,757.65 Carnival Ride Sales 2016 Total $61,936.00 2015 Total $59,034.50 Saturday’s parade again attracted well over 100 entrants, the grand marshal for which was Bill Kruschke. Rachael Eliason was crowned Miss Belle Plaine at Sunday’s Coronation in the BPHS south gymnasium (see separate story).

County Fair Gearing Up for ‘Five Best Days of Summer’ Without Highway Construction to Worry About, Scott County Fair Opens July 27

Knowing he can’t really control the weather, Scott County Fair General Manager Norm Pint keeps an eye on the forecast for next week. He’s hoping for mild weather and gentle breezes. Oppressive heat and stifling humidity don’t do much to boost attendance. “It’s looking pretty good for next week. From what they’re predicting, it should be very pleasant,” Pint said. But no matter what Mother Nature brings, Pint, the staff and an army of volunteers will have the Scott County Fairgrounds in St. Lawrence Township ready for what is marketed as “The Five Best Days of Summer.” The fair runs July 27-31.

The fairgrounds are located at 7151 190th Street. W., just northwest of the junction of Highway 169 and County Road 59. With milder weather anticipated and no construction on Highway 169 this year, the fair’s staff is gearing up for bigger crowds. Last year, an estimated 25,500 vehicles parked at the fair. That was down from 2014, when about 29,000 vehicles brought people to the Scott County Fair. “We heard from a lot of people that said they waited 20 minutes to get across Highway 169 and they just gave up,” he said. “It’ll be nice not to have to deal with that this year.” The fair staff has been working to coordinate construction and preparations for use of the new 4-H building. It replaces the old 4-H building, one of the oldest buildings on the fairgrounds. The canopy from the old building was moved to the north horse ring where it

provides some much-needed shade, Pint said. Since its inception in the early-1900s, the county fair has been a blend of the area’s agrarian history and modern entertainment. That’s true again this year, with events that include the Miracle of Birth Center, carnival rides, demolition derby, live music, the tractor pull, motocross racing and draft horse shows. With the avian virus scare past, chickens will be back at the fairgrounds this year for judging.

What’s Happening

A list of events in each of the Scott County Fair’s five days is inserted in this week’s issue of the Herald. New this year will be simulators offering people the feeling of driving actual big farm equipment. The 49ers operating engineers union is also bringing

Bridge Wasn’t Ready in Time for Bar-B-Q Days But Opening Soon City officials, including Mayor Mike Pingalore, were hopeful that the new overpass near the intersection of Highway 169 and County Road 3/Meridian Street in Belle Plaine would be open for traffic before the start of Bar-B-Q Days last Friday. However, Pingalore said the

reason (among others) the bridge could not open was that the safety railing for along the pedestrian/bike trail could not be completed because not all the material had arrived. Pingalore said it’s possible the bridge could open this week, and if not, shortly thereafter.

Swimming Pool to Host Dive-In Movie Night Friday The Belle Plaine Community Swimming Pool will host its annual Dive-In Movie Night on Friday, July 22 at 8:30 p.m. The movie will be “Finding Nemo,” during which patrons are invited to float in the water or enjoy the movie from their chairs.

The cost is $1 per person and concessions will be available. Last year, Dive-In Movie Night attracted approximately 150 people. A few hundred runners participated in Saturday morning’s Bull Run races (252 in the 5K and 80 in the Kids Fun Run). Kellen Bergs, who will be a senior this fall at Belle Plaine High School, was the overall winner in the 5K.

Matt Fahey of Belle Plaine was among the parade participants Saturday, advertising the family’s horse-drawn carriage service and giving some of the service’s future drivers a chance to hold the reins. One of the passengers seated behind them was Abraham Lincoln, who waved to the crowd.

One way to catch a breeze on a warm mid-July day at Bar-B-Q Days is taking a ride on the carnival’s swings, or below, the always popular Scrambler.

The Belle Plaine Fire Department placed third in Saturday’s water fight, which was won by Chaska. Shakopee was second.

Matthew Kornder Competes in Bar-B-Q Day Bull Run From Kuwait This year was the first time the Belle Plaine Bar-B-Q Days Bull Run had a virtual competitor, as in a competitor who couldn’t be present for the real race, but ran a 5k and submitted that time for

himself and his family team, Team Kornder. Saturday’s parade was a long one, lasting about 90 minutes. Sergeant Matthew Kornder, 27, of the U.S. Marines ran a 5K course in Kuwait while on liberty from his mission on board the USS New Orleans. He ran the race in 104-degree heat on asphalt and in a time of 21 minutes and 20 seconds. Before his deployment, Matthew talked with Belle Plaine High School cross country coach Steve Schroeder, who was excited to invite Matthew to compete from abroad. Matthew used Facebook to message his brother, Jerry Kornder, on July 2 after he had run his race in Kuwait. His brother relayed the time to Schroeder and it was used in the final results for the race with italicized font to indicate the competitor was a virtual competitor Matthew is an avid runner and BPHS alumni. While in high school, he ran cross country, wrestled, ran track and participated in Greco-Roman wrestling in the spring. Matthew joined the Marines four years ago after serving six years in the National Guard. Survey Results in for Bus Service Between Mankato and Twin Cities Nearly 2,000 people responded when the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/ DOT) recently asked for feedback on interest in and the need for intercity bus service along Highway 169 from Mankato to the Twin Cities. “We are very pleased with the participation in the survey,” said Lisa Bigham, Mn/DOT planning director. “In addition to the high response rate, we had a good cross section of respondents’ annual household income, age, race/ethnicity and geographic location.” Key findings of the survey results include: – Over 86 percent of survey respondents make connections between Mankato and the Twin Cities via Highway 169. – Majority of respondents (65 percent) currently use their personal car for this connection and 13 percent use bus service and 6 percent use carpool. – Main trip purpose is social/ recreation/events, followed by shopping and work. – Forty-two percent of the respondents have used the existing bus connection but a major-

ity of them said they would use a bus connection more if the fares were lower and buses ran more often. – Those who said they haven’t used the existing bus connection said they did not know about this service – Majority of respondents want convenient connections to public transportation (bus, light rail, etc.) at their final destination. The project team used social media, news media and paper copies to seniors, minorities and low income to gather feedback. The next step is for the study team to evaluate service options and an implementation plan. The final results of the technical analysis will be shared with the public in the fall of 2016. In the fall of 2015, Mn/DOT assembled a team of agencies to evaluate the potential for intercity bus improvements between Mankato and the Twin Cities and an even broader stake holder group to engage in the study. More information and the detailed survey results can be found atwww.mndot.gov/d7/ projects/hwy169study/.

Ridgeview Foundation Benefit Brings in Over $1 Million for ER More than $1.25 million was raised at the 31st Annual Ridgeview Foundation Golf & Taste Celebration June 20. Proceeds from this year’s event will support the renovation and expansion of Ridgeview’s emergency department in Waconia through the foundation’s Lifeline for a Lifetime campaign. Set to begin in early 2017, the emergency department expansion will allow Ridgeview’s emergency services to remain as a premier resource in the southwest metro area. The 2016 event at Island View Golf Club in Waconia included golf, a bridge tournament, live music, and hors d’oeuvres and beverages from area restaurants

and establishments. The evening program included silent and live auctions, and recognition of major sponsors. More than $10 million has now been raised in support of Ridgeview since the first Golf & Taste event in 1986. “I continue to be amazed by the generosity and the contributions of our community members and volunteers,” said Doug Stasek, executive director, Ridgeview Foundation. “It is amazing to see so many people, from across the southwest metro and beyond, gathered together to support Ridgeview Medical Center and our commitment to health care excellence.”

County Planning Commission Wants to See Storm Water Management Plan

Consideration of the proposed solar garden in Blakeley Township is on hold until the developer completes work on the storm water management plan for the 40-acre parcel in Blakelet Township. Once that work is complete, the proposal is expected back before the Scott County Planning Commission at its August or September meeting. The commission is expected to make a recommendation to the county board either accept or reject the project. The planning commission was previously expected to review the proposal at its July 11 meeting. ScottSun, a division of SunShare LLC, is seeking a conditional-use permit for a 5-megawatt solar garden on Union Trail (County Road 1) in Blakeley Township, just north of the county road’s intersec-

tion with West 250th Street (County Road 51). It is on a 40acre tract owned by Bonita and John Kane. The land is free of buildings, woodland and wetlands and is farmed. ScottSun is proposing to lease the land from the Kanes. The company is proposing to use 35 of the 40 acres. The solar panels will be on concrete foundations 8 to 12 feet into the ground. If the CUP is granted, they will be set 150 feet from the centerline of County Road 1 (Union Trail) and 100 feet from the side property boundaries. They will be mounted on a racking system, 15 feet apart and 10 feet into the air. They will be dark blue in color, coated with a material designed to minimize reflection and maximize absorption of sunlight. The county says ScottSun is required to erect a 6-foot-tall chain link fence around the solar garden with 4-foot-tall evergreens along County Road 1 and the north side of the solar garden, the closest side to exist-

ing residences. The trees will be 12 feet apart. Blakeley Township is requesting additional screening. The proposal carries the conditional support of the town board. Supervisor Robert Wagner said the town board is unenthusiastic about the loss of productive farmland, but can’t block the proposal because it meets the county’s new ordinance governing solar gardens. “There’s really not a lot we can do about it,” Wagner said. The township also wants the CUP to cease when the proposed solar garden is decommissioned in 25 years, Wagner said. Jordan is interested in the proposed solar garden. The city council plans to purchase some of the electricity the solar garden generates and contributes to the regional power grid. State law passed in 2013 requires Xcel Energy to provide 1½ percent of the energy it sells be generated via solar power by 2020.

Cologne Gets Cold Feet Over Big City Water Rate Hikes

The Cologne City Council is not ready to quickly approve big city water rate increases to help fund the construction of a new municipal water treatment facility and city well. Monday (July 18), the council directed staff to see if other options are available to fund the construction of the facilities besides the three years of 24percent rate increases as recommended in a rate study commissioned by the council. The Minnesota Public Finance Authority (PFA) called for the rate study to make sure the city had the means to repay a proposed $7.4 million loan that would fund the new city water treatment plant and well. Bids for those two facilities came in below estimate at about $6.2 million. But those bids are only good through Aug. 9, said City Administrator Jesse Dickson. The council is scheduled to meet again Aug. 1. Springsted Inc., the city’s financial advisor, performed the rate study. Monday, an updated version of the study indicated the increases in rates could be reduced if the size of the loan is smaller than $7.4 million. The council and Cologne residents are uneasy about the proposed rate hikes of 24 percent in 2017, 2018 and 2019, followed by a 10 percent increase in 2020, a 5 percent increase in 2021 and a 3 percent bump in

2022 to repay the PFA loan. The study also assumes no increases from 2023 through 2036. It includes the possibility of volume fees to generate additional revenue from high-use customers. The proposed increases would bump the water bill for a house using up to 20,000 gallons annually by $36.37 per month or $436.43 annually. The city’s other option to fund repayment of the loan is through property taxes. The study assumes 15 to 30 new connections annually between 2017 and 2036. But Dickson said the uncertainty of the number of new houses and the impact new housing starts would have on the city had the council and residents looking

for more specifics.

In other action at Monday (July 18) meeting, the Cologne City Council: • Paid bills totaling $71,849.17. • Granted St. Bernard Catholic Church’s request for a temporary gambling license on Oct. 1, 2016. • Granted M/I Homes application for preliminary plat approval for 72 residential lots north of Village Parkway and west of County Road 53. • Approved a one-time forgiveness of late fees for late payments on utility bills. • Discussed “Welcome to Cologne” signs to be placed on the city’s eastern and western borders.

BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA

Thirty Years Ago This Week

New Royal Court Lisa Nelson (front center) was crowned Belle Plaine’s 1986 Bar-B-Q Days queen. Seated next to her are Second Princess Toni Berns (left) and First Princess Molly Daly. Standing, from left, are Miss Congeniality Ann Klehr, retiring Queen Kari Lockrem and Miss Congeniality Jill Fogarty. There were two miss congenialities in 1986. The sun shined bright for all three days of Belle Plaine’s 1986 Bar-B-Q Days celebration. Lisa Nelson was crowned the new Miss Belle Plaine. Other crown recipients were First Princess Molly Daly, Second Princess Toni Berns, and two were Miss Congeniality that year – Ann Klehr and Jill Fogarty. About 6,600 pounds of beef was sold at the beef stand, where the price was 75 cents per sandwich. A total of 236 16gallon kegs of beer was sold. Jeff Miller found the hidden Bar-B-Q Days coin following a record number of six clues. Miller, 20, son of John and Pat Miller, found it shortly after the sixth clue was made available at the beef stand. He found it on the back side of a dead end road sign on West Church Street. The Belle Plaine School Board gave preliminary approval to a 1986-87 school general fund budget totalling $2,532,370, which amounted to a $105,505 increase over the 1985-86 school year. Larry G. Beckefeld, 20, of Green Isle, died at University of Minnesota Hospital that Friday night from injuries he received in a car-motorcycle accident shortly after noon that day. Beckefeld was riding a motorcycle when he was struck by the car at the intersection of Highway 25 and Sibley County Road 16 about 10 miles west of Belle Plaine. He was the son of Jerome and Rose Mary Beckefeld of Green Isle. Because of the overwhelming subscriber support for metro phone service in the Belle Plaine area, the Public Utilities Commission decided that no public hearing on the issue was necessary. A total of 79.3 percent of area telephone subscribers had recently voted in favor of metro phone service. Henry Carl Krumrey, age 91, of Belle Plaine, passed away July 21. Mr. Krumrey was born

in Blakeley Township to August and Anna (Kessler) Krumrey. He married Emma Laabs and they farmed in Scott County until moving to Belle Plaine in 1932. George Allen Taylor, age 87, formerly of Belle Plaine, passed away July 21 at Valley View Nursing Home in Jordan. The Belle Plaine town Tigers baseball team won two games that week against Hamburg 13-8 and Cologne 17-14, the latter of which took 11 innings. The Tigers banged out 21 hits against Cologne, led by Al Hentges and Jeff Miller, the latter of whom hit his ninth homer of the season. Belle Plaine ďŹ nished Carver Central League play with a record of 11-11. Jordan was the runaway league champion at 20-2.

60 Years Ago (1956)

A group of local hunters took out their guns to ďŹ nd out if there was a bear in the vicinity of the Clarence Noll farm. They found tracks but no bear was seen by the hunters. A bridal shower was held at the Ralph Bohnsack home for Shirley Rusch, who was to be married in Germany the following week. The general report on the grain harvest was not too favorable. One local authority stated that the small grain crop would be about two-thirds of the usual crop. A 24-year-old Shakopee man, Dennis Dahlgren, met his death in a trafďŹ c accident on Highway 169 near Minneapolis. He was the son of T.A. Dahlgren, Scott County register of deeds. A birthday party and wiener roast was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Kerkow at Blakeley in honor of the birthdays of Edith and Bill Kerkow, Earl Woestehoff, Howard and Melinda Schultz and Emil

Schultz. Three Belle Plaine boys stationed in Germany with the Army had a chance meeting while swimming. Dick Tillquist, who was stationed at Wurzburg, was swimming at Bad Kissingen when he was surprised to see Mike O’Brien and Ervin Schmidt at the same beach and learned that they were stationed at Schweinfurt, only 20 miles away. The River Valley League AllStars defeated league-leader St. Peter 5-2 at Jordan in the annual All-Star game. Dave Dillon, Jerry Miller and Cliff King of Belle Plaine played with the All-Stars. During the absence of Mr. and Mrs. George Taubman, prowlers attempted to break into their home at the south side of Belle Plaine. They broke in the screened porch but were unable to enter the house. Only two farmers turned out in Scott County to vote on the question of setting wheat quotas. In Carver County, there were six ballots cast, 12 in Sibley County and 15 in Le Sueur County. Of the 35 total, all voted in favor of establishing marketing quotas. The Boy Scouts stayed at Camp Tomahawk for the week. They were Wayne Brenke, Mark Albrecht, Bruce Hormann, George Doheny, Jimmy Glynn and Roger Moody. Heavy grasshopper attacks were reported on farms in most parts of Minnesota, including several localities in this area. State Department of Agriculture entomologists said chemical control was needed to save second and third crop hay, especially alfalfa. The marriage of Miss Sylvia Beneke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Beneke of Waconia, to Wilbert Bartels, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bartels, took place at the Young America Lutheran church.

80-acre farm just east of Belle Plaine to Walter Holste for $9,839, the new owner taking possession that coming fall. Oliver Kahle, Erwin Blume and Gerald Kirchoff went to Fort Snelling for a month’s training at the Citizens Military Camp. Ed Echardt’s pro baseball team gave a trimming to Cold Spring on the Belle Plaine diamond. Cold Spring also promoted a pro team that season. Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Connelly entertained the young folks of the St. Thomas community with a lawn party. A Shakopee man, Henry Kurvers, 49, was struck by lightning and instantly killed. The Bauman carpenter crew started work on the large new farm home of Henry Schultz. Scott County voted a levy of $90,000 for roads for the ensuing year. Carver County voted $100,000, Le Sueur County $140,000 and Sibley County $75,000. C.A. Neil, the photographer, bought the 20 acres that made up the former Keller farm on the Blakeley road and planned to make it a summer home.

120 Years Ago (1896)

There was so much hay that season it was a drug on the local market. Much was offered at $3.50 a ton, the lowest price ever known. Riding a bicycle to the city was considered the goal of all good cyclists. Those who qualiďŹ ed that week were Walter Fearing, Willie Sisterman, Matt Hahn, Matt Blau, Peter Meyer and E.E. Chard. A lively local business was operating buses to meet the trains. W.M. Martin had a three-seat canopy-top rig, Chas. Pfenning a rig of similar style and Mat Thill an enclosed bus. All the trains were met. The baseball boys complained that collections at games were not enough to meet expenses. It was suggested that spectators who didn’t at least have a nickel or dime to throw into the hat should stay at home.

Dear Editor, I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to all of the individuals and organizations which made Belle Plaine’s BarB-Que Days a success again this year! My guests from out of town could not believe how incredible the parade was and the sense of community which emulated throughout the weekend’s venues. Once again this year, the ďŹ reworks display was nothing short of amazing. Simply spectacular! Way to go Belle Plaine, so thankful to call you Home! Rick Krant Dear Editor, Next Monday, July 25, the city council will vote to sell city property to Ridgeview Medical Clinic. The process outlined is Ridgeview will take ownership of the property, issue a ground lease to an investor group for a parcel, who in turn will build an independent-living apartment building. The apartment building is intended to be sold to The Lutheran Home Association after showing viability. The question I have asked is: “Who is this investor group?â€? City staff does not know. I asked privately who were the investors and was told it was a group of friends and donors to the community. The citizens of Belle Plaine have tax subsidized $26,500 for this property. I have talked to several business owners around town and asked if this was standard operating procedure for doing business. The universal answer was “noâ€?. Conducting a business deal needs to be open and forthright. I feel the city council and city staff must exercise its due diligence and ascertain who the citizens of Belle Plaine are subsidizing. Sincerely, Cary G. Coop Member, Belle Plaine City Council

Dear Editor, On behalf of the Relay For Life of Scott County Planning Committee, we want to recognize and applaud the efforts of those who helped to make this year’s 19th annual “Turn Your World Purpleâ€? Relay For Life event so successful. Whether you participated on a team, volunteered at the event or made a donation, we really appreciate your commitment to Relay and to the ďŹ ght against cancer. What a beautiful night to gather as a community at the Lions Park and Sweeney Elementary in Shakopee to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Our new venue was wonderful. This year we raised $90,600 for patient services, education, research and advocacy. Together, we have raised over $2.5 million in the past 19 years here in Scott County. We came together as family, friends, neighbors and coworkers to Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back. The ACS Relay For Life is about being a community that takes up the ďŹ ght. There is no ďŹ nish line until we ďŹ nd a cure. We appreciate the efforts of everyone involved with our 19th Annual “Turn Your World Purpleâ€? Relay. Let’s keep up the great work; we are making a difference in the ďŹ ght against cancer. Sheila Matzke, Joey Skogrand, Ruby Winings, Relay for Life Event Tri-Leads

Cologne Hosting Glad Days

Cologne’s annual summer festival, Glad Days, will feature a tractor cruise and BBQ festival this year as part of the event’s “farm country” theme. The 15th edition of Glad Days runs Thursday July 28 through Saturday, July 30. Most events are at City Square Park in downtown Cologne. Glad Days begins with citywide garage sales Thursday and a garden party that evening (7-9 p.m.). The event features craft beer and wine tasting from local breweries and vineyards, food with music by Becky Rae Dalton. There will also be judging in the “Glad You’re My Neighbor” contest and judging in the gladiolas/flower contest. Entries are judged and awarded prizes and a special frame. Friday’s (July 29) events include a softball tournament at Lions Park, beer garden and food vendors at City Square Park, a free hot dog dinner from 6-7 p.m. and the Kid Fest/ Kiddie Parade at 6 p.m. (lineup at 5:45 on West Market Street, south side of park). Kid Fest runs from 6-8 p.m. The Splatter Sisters will perform from 6-7 p.m. Face painting, fire truck rides, bounce houses and movies will also be available. The band “Up South” will perform from 8 p.m. to midnight. Admission is free. Saturday’s (July 30) events include a 5K-color run at 8 a.m., and children’s half-mile fun run at 9 a.m. There will be a softball tournament, pedal-pull, polka music, petting zoo, magic show and tractor cruise lineup at 1 p.m. Other events include a karate demonstration, sheriff’s canine demonstration, BBQ judging, and other activities. Music by “In The Fields” will run from 8 a.m. to midnight.

Heavy-Duty Precipitation Saturday night’s hard rain was especially tough on the piano Keys 4/4 Kids left along the street on East Main Street. Sunday morning, the keys to the piano were on the sidewalk, bench and keyboard. Newell Hill, Keys 4/4 Kids executive director, said he is “100 percent sure” the rain -- not vandals -- damaged the piano. Hill plans to dispose of the old piano.

defense. Zac Dahlke started on the mound and was wonderful until the fifth, when he ran into some trouble. On came Ben Wagner, who didn’t fare much better. Wagner threw two innings before yielding to Joe Pomije, who worked two-thirds of an inning. Under-utilized weapon Matt Ruehling came on for the final out of the eighth. Joe Hankins led the punchless charge with a pair of hits. Gaylord 16, Tigers 4 Looking to make up for the whitewashing a night earlier, Belle Plaine headed to Gaylord looking for a win. The new royal court’s first parade will be this weekend at Montgomery’s Kolacky Days celebration. They will represent Belle Plaine at many more parades and events now through the 2017 Bar-B-Q Days. Eliason said she knows the other three members of the royal court quite well, and plans to get to knowing them a lot more over the next 12 months, a process that started shortly after Sunday’s coronation when they walked through Bar-B-Q Days together. Each eventually went home to change clothes and return for some more Bar-B-Q Days, getting free carnival rides and meeting a lot of people. “I think the best part was visiting with a all the little girls who were excited to meet us and getting our pictures taken with them,” Eliason said.

The Miracle of Birth Center in the dairy barn is one of the more popular additions to the fair in recent years. Overhead monitors offer an up-close look at the birth of chickens, goats, sheep and calves. This year, organizers are adding pigs to the expected deliveries at the center. Educational videos will also be displayed at the center. The fair begins Wednesday morning (July 27) with a rabbit show. Other events include bingo for children, a bike show, a magic show, police canine demonstration, a bicycle stunt show and live music before the National Tractor Pullers Assoc. (NTPA) truck and tractor pull show in the grandstand. NTPA competitors will be on hand Wednesday night. NTPA staff is checking out the improved track, sound and lighting system the fair board OK’d for the grandstand. The fair board invested about $40,000 into new lighting and sound in the grandstand. New clay was also brought in to improve the track. Thursday’s schedule includes a visit from the Minnesota Zoo’s Zoomobile, the YoYo Dave Show, free harmonica lessons, all-star karaoke, and a second night of truck and trac-

tor pulls. Meanwhile, Solid Gold will perform on the fair’s main stage. The “local truck and tractor pullers” will take to the grandstand track Thursday evening,” Pint said. B.P. Lions Hosting ‘Beep Ball’ Games, Rib & Craft Beer Fest The Belle Plaine Lions Club is hosting an inaugural “beep ball” event and rib & craft beer fest Sunday, Aug. 7, at Tiger Park. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It features “beep ball” games plus the talent of the area’s top craft brewers and rib cookers. “Beep ball” is a form of baseball for visually impaired or blindfolded players. They focus on sound, hitting a beeping ball and running toward bases that give off sound. According to the National Beep Ball Association, a contest lasts for six innings unless more are needed to break a tie. A team has three outs per inning. However, there are some differences from regular baseball. There is no second base. First and third bases, four foot padded cylinders with speakers, are placed 100 feet down their respective lines and 10 feet off the foul line. This is to prevent a runner from colliding with a

defensive fielder. The bases contain sounding units that give off a buzzing sound when activated. The batter does not know which one will be turned on. When the ball is hit, the base operator activates one of the bases. The runner must identify the correct buzzing base and run to it before a defensive player fields the ball. If the runner is safe, a run is scored. Teams can sign up for the competition for $75. The Minnesota Millers Beep Ball team will be participating in the event. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., local cookers and brewers will compete in the rib and craft beer festival. To enter, call Bob Denny at (612) 759-9776 by Sunday, July 31. It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Belle Plaine to Close Regular Season With Slew of Promotions by Brett Kruschke and Matt Schultz A trying season hit another rough patch last week as the Tigers suffered a pair of uneven RVL road losses, dropping them to 7-16 overall and 4-9 in league play. As Clark Griswold optimistically once said, however, “With each day there’s fresh hope.” The Tigers played at Cologne last night (Tuesday); go to bptigertown.com. As for the Tigers’ troubles, we’re hoping it’s nothing a few home game promotions can’t fix. On Friday at Tiger Park will be the dual promotion of Matt Saxe Chevrolet Buick Night and Pulled Pork Sandwiches Night. Saxe will be giving away T-shirts to the first 100

Belle Plaine Still Alive in Legion Tourney The Belle Plaine American Legion baseball team is still alive in the double-elimination Third District Tournament after it won two of its three games at this past weekend’s games in Norwood Young America and Cologne. The tournament will resume this Friday and wrap up Sunday (see accompanying brackets). Belle Plaine, which was 10-1

during the regular season, blanked Zumbrota 4-0 in Friday’s opening round at NYA. Nathan Herman pitched a threehit shutout and also had a tworun double to fuel Belle Plaine. Jonathan Schmitt also drove in a run. The Tigers headed to Cologne later on Friday for a secondround game against Pine Island and lost 2-1. Belle Plaine coach

Jason Ladd said his team left 10 runners “in scoring position” on base. Herman knocked in the only run for Belle Plaine. The Tigers were back in action in an elimination game Sunday in Norwood, trouncing Le Sueur-Henderson 9-1. Alex Ruud smacked a home run and Wes Sarsland picked up the win on the mound. Belle Plaine will have to win

out this weekend if it hopes to win the tournament. That difficult quest will begin against Cannon Falls 7:30 p.m. Friday in Cologne. The winner of that game will live to play another day on Saturday against Plato at 11 a.m. in NYA. Holy Family and Watertown are the tournament’s two remaining unbeaten teams entering this weekend’s play.

Dylan Olson Changes Uniforms Dylan Olson of Belle Plaine will be facing some decidedly different hurdles for the next nine months. Last May, Olson, a member of the Hamline University track and field team, leaped past the field in the 110-meter hurdles at the MIAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Collegeville, finishing first in 14.85 seconds. Two months earlier, he had finished a strong second in the 55 hurdles at the Indoor Championships in Northfield. Olson’s newest challenge is some 6,300 miles away. He is part of a 268-member Minnesota Army National Guard unit that has been deployed to the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. Olson and his comrades in arms will be assisting in upholding the 1979 peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Olson, who joined the Guard while in high school, was just finishing his sophomore year at Hamline when he got the call to service. He had little time to enjoy his win at the MIAC Championships. The day after his race, he had to miss the team’s banquet due to a mandatory National Guard event. After a quick break, he found himself at Fort Ripley and then in Mankato to start training for his assignment. When he had his deployment ceremony there on July 10, Sen. Amy Klobuchar Belle Plaine pitcher Nathan Herman threw out a Zumbrota runner during Friday’s game at was one of the speakers. Dylan NYA. Herman pitched a complete-game three-hitter and also knocked in two runs. is currently in Fort Bliss, Texas,

Dylan Olson for mobilization before heading to Egypt. Battalions from Fiji and Colombia will also be on hand to work with the Minnesota unit. But his thoughts are with his teammates. He wrote a letter that his coaches read at the team banquet. It said in part: “It was incredibly exciting to see our team push forward and succeed as one very deserving family. To our seniors, captains and other leaders, I’d like to acknowledge your hard work, dedication and persistence throughout these long months. Seniors, thank you for your many years, and I wish you the absolute best on the paths you have chosen from here on. . . . “I intend to return to my home, to Hamline and to this track and field team as a member of the Class of 2019 when my tour has run its course,” Olson continued.
