City Council Begins Process of Hiring Next Administrator The Belle Plaine City Council placed the process of hiring a city administrator in Mayor Chris Meyer’s hands for now, agreeing he should begin checking with headhunting firms for potential candidates. In the wake of Mike Votca’s resignation in June and Finance Director Dawn Meyer once again taking on the position on an interim basis, the council briefly discussed how to proceed after last Monday’s (July 17) meeting. The mayor indicated working with a search firm would not guarantee the city hires the best possible candidate to lead city staff in implementing the wishes and policies established by the city council. The position requires a bachelor’s degree in public administration or related field and three years of professional experience with city or county including supervisory experience in operations, management, personnel, and finance. Candidates must exhibit a community service mindset with exceptional communication skills “and a high level of professionalism,” according to the city’s job description for the position. The city, working through the League of Minnesota Cities, has advertised the position via e-mail. Belle Plaine, Arlington and Gaylord are among area cities looking to fill a vacant city administrator position. Belle

Plaine’s position has a pay range of $85,177 to $112,818 plus “excellent benefits,” according to the city. Meyer is looking for a candidate who is “confident, forward thinking, aggressive and well rounded to meet all the aspects of this position and all of those that this person will come into contact with in the course of daily business at the city. This person needs to be firm but fair in order to get things accomplished while still maintaining a favorable working relationships with employees, citizens and potential developers,” he said. Councilor Paul Chard is looking for an administrator who will guide the staff, someone who will provide information the city council wants and needs to make decisions. He believes the next city administrator should allow staff to do its job. Chard said the city has tried hiring candidates from smaller cities, a person who will professionally grow along with Belle Plaine. “I don’t want him or her micro-managing the staff,” Chard said. “I’m looking for someone who’ll look over his shoulder without micro-managing the departments, someone who’ll do what’s best for the city.” Meyer believes the next city administrator will need to work hand in hand with the Community Development director to

find ways to facilitate further development both in the residential, commercial and industrial sectors. “This person will need to have the experience to step up and move these types of projects forward,” Meyer said. Councilor Cary Coop strongly recommended a high level of involvement by the council during the interviews of candidates for the position. He believes the city’s next administrator – its seventh since 2000 – should have some administrative experience. “Hiring a person with no experience would be a mistake,” he said. A potential administrator must be able to work with coun- Brad Wagner is the new owner of Belle Plaine Dairy Queen. cil members, an experienced city staff, volunteer committee members, professionals with other cities, counties, state and federal governments, and the community at large, Coop said. Good communication skills, the ability to organize many personalities towards common goals, and administer staff are also high on his list of important attributes. “The first issue a potential administrator should address is working with staff to end any conflicts, hidden agendas or manipulation. The second issue is balance between eco-

Two New Businesses Have Big Plans for Belle Plaine Two new members of the Belle Plaine business community are ready to serve the community as it continues to grow. Dairy Queen is now under new management as of April 28. First Choice Pharmacy opened its doors on East Commerce Drive earlier this summer in the new Ridgeview/Kings Path apartment complex at the juncJim Glisczinski (right), along with one of his helpers, Tate Fahey, will be at the pulling competion of South Meridian Street tition tomorrow night (July 27) at the Scott County Fair’s Grandstand. and West Commerce Drive.

Glisczinski, Area Pullers Ready to Compete at Scott County Fair Jim Glisczinski has several tractors performing heavy-duty work on his farm in Belle Plaine Township. But there’s one tractor that won’t see a row of corn or soybeans. Its job is to pull a weighted scale – the farther the better. Glisczinski is one of a handful of area truck and tractor pullers who’ll be competing in the grandstand at the Scott County Fair this week. Unlike the National Tractor Pullers Association (NTPA) pull in the grandstand tonight (July 26, 7 p.m.), the competition in which Glisczinski and friends will compete is non-sanctioned. Glisczinski will compete tomorrow night (July 27, 7 p.m.) in the 11,000-pound hot farm division. His tractor is a 1980 John Deere 4440. He bought it from an implement dealer in Wisconsin during the summer of 2012 for $11,000. The tractor was originally from Alabama and was “beat to hell” when he bought it, Glisczinski said. Since then, he’s put about $15,000 into the tractor. The motor, the cooling system, pistons, camshaft, clutch have all been redone, Glisczinski said.

WHEN: July 26-30 WHERE: Scott County Fairgrounds, 7151 190th Street W., St. Lawrence Twp., north of B.P. COST: No admission fee. Parking, $10 per vehicle per day, $5 per motorcycle, $20 season pass ADD’L INFO: www.scottcountyfair.org The diesel engine is cooled by water and a little bit of threadcutting oil. It’s powered by Cenex ruby red diesel fuel. At 59, Glisczinski can justify the investment. It’s his way of relaxing, of letting off steam. “It’s a fever, a hobby. It’s what we do,” he said. “I don’t have a boat. I don’t fish. I don’t gamble other than farming. I don’t cuss, until it blows up.” Last year, Glisczinski and his crew enjoyed three wins with the John Deere. His best pull last year was a 320-footer at the

Dakota County Fair. The other two wins were at county fairs in Wisconsin. Glisczinski finished among the top 10 in his class at the Scott County Fair last year, and he figures the competition will be as strong this week. He’s a member of a group known as “The Renegade Pullers,” a group of pullers from Butterfield, Minn. to Hamburg. They help each other out with parts, tools or advice whenever possible and enjoy the chance to get together and talk tractor pulling. On the track, they’re all business. Glisczinski recalls his first competition. It was many years ago at the Le Sueur County Fair. He finished in second place and there was no turning back. His first victory came the following year. “I was hooked,” he said. “I knew I could improve myself.” He’s been pulling ever since.

New Owner, New Look Later This Year

Brad Wagner recently purchased the Dairy Queen franchise and building on East Commerce Drive at South Walnut Street. He has big plans for renovating the existing building and bringing a new look to the sweet treat store. Wagner has already invested about $65,000 in new equipment at DQ. He plans on investing another $225,000 later this year in an interior makeover with new tile and maple flooring, and new LED lighting. The store will be designed similar to the Grill & Chill in New Prague. Wagner knows that store well because his brother owns it. “We were able to get this building so we could have it be what we want, a really nice store,” Wagner said. Wagner has changed the lobby hours to 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. The drive-through is open until 10 p.m. “We really like being in Belle Plaine. It’s similar to New Prague, the same kind of values, good families and good kids here,” he said. Wagner knows the area well. His mother, Beverly (Meger)

A generous but unapproved donation to the City of Belle Plaine and Townsend Park Friday morning had city staff asking Keys 4/4 Kids Executive Director Newell Hill to remove the piano. The city would welcome the donation, pending official approval.

Downtown Business’s Donation to City, Park Slightly Off Key

Newell Hill was simply trying to bring a little music and joy to Townsend Park Friday. He never expected his donation would be declined. Hill, executive director of Belle Plaine’s Keys 4/4 Kids, sought to donate a piano to the city and place it in a downtown

park. Friday morning (July 21), he left an upright piano in Townsend Park on South Meridian Street. The piano, just like the one outside the business

Thanks for a Job Well Done Belle Plaine Public Works Superintendent Al Fahey was the guest of honor at a recent meeting of the Belle Plaine Historical Society. The group celebrated Henrietta Stiles’s 101st birthday. She presented Fahey a certificate of appreciation thanking him and his staff for their support maintaining the historic Hooper-Bowler-Hillstrom House and the Episcopal Church of the Transfiguration. Pictured above are (from lower left) Fahey, Henrietta Stiles, Phyllis Renne, Gerry Meyer, Laurie Devine, Lisa Fahey, Rick Krant, Mary Pat Munson, Chris Meyer, and Tim Lies.

A member of the New Prague’s park board, charter commission and street improvement committee is the New Prague City Council’s choice to replace Jenna Tuma. The council voted 3-1 to appoint Margaret Bass as an interim councilor to serve at least until a special election in

November of 2018, the New Prague Times recently reported. Tuma recently resigned from the city council to move to Minneapolis where she will be closer to her job. Bass was one of three candidates for the open seat. The council interviewed her, An-

nette Babione and James Morris at a special meeting July 13. Bass told the council that economic development and senior housing are two important issues facing new Prague. She believes providing ample housing for seniors is essential.

Montgomery to Maintain its Own P.D., Will Hire New Chief The saga of Montgomery’s police department and how it will serve the community’s citizens is apparently over since the city council recently voted to retain the department and hire a new chief. The Montgomery City Council voted 4-1 to retain its own police department rather than maintain a contract for policing services with the Le Sueur

County Sheriff’s Office, the Montgomery Messenger recently reported. The decision allows the city to begin the process of hiring a new chief. The future of Montgomery’s police department was placed on shaky ground this spring when the city council fired its police chief, then rehired him so councilors could accept his

resignation. Mayor John Grimm said before the recent vote he felt the decision served the will of the majority of Montgomery’s residents. Councilor Mick McGuire disagreed and noted misinformation over the decision to retain the city’s police department circulating around the community.

Scott Schoknecht, 45 of Belle Plaine, passed away unexpectedly at St. Francis Hospital in Shakopee on Sunday, July 23, 2017. Arrangements are pending with the Kolden Funeral Home in Belle Plaine. Full obituary can be found at belleplaineherald.com and koldenfuneralhome.com

Helen E. Morrison Helen Elizabeth (Berger) Morrison passed away Wednesday July 19, 2017 at her home surrounded by her family. Wake and funeral was held on Saturday, July 22. Wake was from 9-11 a.m. at St. John’s Catholic Church in Faxon Township, with funeral following beginning at 11 a.m. Burial was in St. John’s Catholic Cemetery. Helen was born February 17, 1921 in Jessenland Township in Sibley County. She was the fifth of six children born to John and Sara Trimbo Berger. She met John Morrison through her sister Marie. She and John were married Thanksgiving Day November 25, 1943 at St. Thomas Church in Jessenland. She moved to the Morrison family farm in Faxon Township and lived there her entire married life. Helen was a great cook and homemaker. She took great pride in her baking and entertaining of all her family and neighbors. She did not need a recipe to whip up an apple pie or her famous rhubarb desert. She always had a big garden where for many years she canned for her family. She loved playing cards and loved her neighborhood euchre parties over the years. She loved polka music and listening to Danny O’Donnell. Over the years she worked at Green Giant with her sister Marie and sister-in-law Ella. She worked many years at Faxon Township as an election judge. She knew everyone in the township and always greeted them all with a kind word and friendly smile. She leaves as her legacy her family. She was very proud of all of their accomplishments. She guided them all with her love and her strong Catholic faith. She and John were married for nearly 70 years until his death in April of 2013. She is survived by her six children, Bill (Karen), Colleen (Larry) Plonski, Pat, Judy (Rod) Petersen, Terry (Michelle), and Jeannie (Ron) Savage; 19 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Ella Berger and Lucille Biron. She is proceeded in death by her husband John; her parents; brothers, Manning, Mark and Art; and sisters, Lorraine Murphy, Marie Morrison and Anna Rita Berger.

John T. Chilson John Thomas Chilson, 57, of Hastings, passed away peacefully at home on Friday evening, July 14, 2017, after a long challenge with metastatic prostate cancer into the bones and liver. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 20 at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church in Hastings, with Reverend Jason Thiel and Reverend Jon Zimpelmann officiating. Interment with Military Honors provided by the Hastings VFW Lyle Russell Post 1210, were held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation was from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Hastings, and continued at church on Thursday morning from 9-11 a.m. John Thomas was born December 18, 1959, the son of Eli John Chilson, Jr. and Leona (Pechachek) Chilson in Hastings where he also graduated high school with the class of 1978. Prior to graduation, at the age of 17, John enlisted on August 29, 1977, into the US Army, Minnesota Army National Guard, into Company B, then the 147th Signal Battalion, 47th Infantry Division (now the 34th Infantry Division), located here in Hastings. John was a Signal Communications System Operator. He became an active duty Soldier for various assignments within the Division and Headquarters State Area Command. John served 20 years active duty service and a total of 28 years total years in service, including his reserve/weekend years in service. After his military retirement, he was hired as the Logistics Coordinator at Shield Technologies in Eagan, and loved the company of the people he worked with. The business sells their product to the units in the Department of Defense globally, and this was familiar and comfortable for John. He also enjoyed the continuance of service to the Armed Forces in a new and different (civilianized) way. John married Lynette Ann (Grams) Chilson on April 30, 1983. She later tragically passed away and went to heaven on August 1, 1987, leaving John to love and care for their daughter, Jennifer Ann Chilson. John later met and married Ann Lydia (Manthe) Chilson on the Schatze Paddleboat, Port of Red Wing, with Pastor Percy Damrow officiating. They were married on October 8, 1994, and of course with Jennifer present for the wedding, they added three siblings, Zachary James Chilson, Logan Adam Chilson, and Emily Leah Chilson. Jennifer married Garett James Twigg on June 27, 2015, with Ann officiating. John’s kids were his whole world and always made them his first priority and greatest joy; he was a wonderful father. John is survived by his wife, Ann Lydia Manthe Chilson of Hastings; his four children and one son-in-law, Jennifer Ann Chilson (Garett James Twigg) of West Allis, WI, Zachary James Chilson of Kenosha, WI, Logan Adam Chilson of Hastings, and Emily Leah Chilson

He said the previous administrators left for career advancement, while others left because they were not the correct fit for the city. “I am focused on today and the future and to make sure that we put a person in this position that will look at the opportunity and the ability to take this city to a whole new level,” he said. “We have great department heads so the day to day operation of the city is in great shape. We are lacking a person that is looking for opportunities and has the horsepower, contacts and network to make these come to realization.”

ers is due back in Scott County District Court next Wednesday (Aug. 2) for an omnibus hearing. According to the criminal complaint, Schroers, 46, allegedly threatened his neighbor’s father after he confronted Schroers for throwing garbage on the lawn of his daughter’s house on the 400 block of West Main Street on a Monday afternoon earlier this month (July 17). The criminal complaint states Schroers displayed a box

cutter and extended the blade from it. Schroers claimed, the complaint states, he threw the garbage on his neighbor’s lawn because he did not want it on his lawn. Schroers says he did not point the box cutter at the man, though he admits he was waiving it around. He claimed he never threatened to stab the man, but he did admit he was going to “cut him, according to the criminal complaint.

Thirty Years Ago This Week didn’t have schools or housing facilities for families, Major Ahrens’s wife, Myrna, and his sons, Chuck and Mark, planned to live in Belle Plaine during his deployment. Belle Plaine Schools participated in the MS Read-a-Thon, and top readers won prizes including a trip to Valleyfair and the chance to meet Minnesota sports celebrities. Melissa Mantey, daughter of Curt and Barb Mantey, was the top reader at Trinity Lutheran School who read 36 books and raised $68 in the ďŹ ght against multiple sclerosis. Emily Hodapp, daughter of Mark and Kathy Hodapp, was the top reader at Belle Plaine Elementary School by reading 25 books and raising $157. The baseball season ended for the Belle Plaine Tigers after their 7-4 loss to Le Sueur and 9-0 loss to Chaska, in the double-elimination Carver Central League playoffs. Belle Plaine ended the 1987 season with nine wins and ďŹ fteen losses.

Two Belle Plaine residents, Evelyn Schmitt and Arnold Wolf, were named Outstanding Senior Citizens of Scott County for 1987. They were honored on Friday, July 31, at the Scott County Fair and on Senior Citizens’ Day, September 3, at the Minnesota State Fair. To help improve trafďŹ c ow, visitors to the Scott County Fair used a new entrance to get to the fairgrounds. The new entrance was at the north end of the fairgrounds off Scott County Road 57. Belle Plaine residents were breathing a sigh of relief after missing major weather events within the last week. On Monday night, July 27, a storm dropped large amounts of rain on the surrounding area and tornadoes inicted extensive damage in Goodhue County, but it just settled the dust in Belle Plaine with a tenth of an inch of rain. On Thursday, July 23, another storm caused severe damage and ooding in other parts of the metro area but only minor ooding and a few temporary road closings nearby. On Monday, July 20, thunderstorms dumped up to nine inches of rain in Scott and Carver counties, with lots of power outages, ooded roads, and ooded basements, but again Belle Plaine was spared from the worst. Following her three-week trip to the Soviet Union, Joyce Rajenden returned home to Belle Plaine and said, “When you get right down to it, they are just like us. They aren’t out to get us‌and think America is the aggressor.â€? Rajenden was among 32 students representing Minnesota as student ambassaYou need it now more than ever

Sean and Neal Niemiec presented a magic show as “Zorloff and Marcoâ€? to over 100 people who crowded into the public library on Cedar Street. James Walker, 52, former Belle Plaine businessman who owned a Ford dealership in the mid-1970s, died July 17 at his home in Gambler, Ohio. Citing lack of movie-goers and the increasing popularity of renting videos, the owners of the New Prague movie theater decided to stop showing ďŹ lms at the end of the summer. Governor Rudy Perpich recently signed the Admissions Tax Bill which placed a 25-cent tax on all admissions to the major recreational facilities in the county and would help pay for the Bloomington Ferry Bridge in northeastern Scott County. The Scott-Carver-Dakota Community Action Agency planned to distribute USCA Commodity cheese, rice, milk, and honey in Scott and Carver counties, on Saturday morning, August 1. A family of four with a gross income of $20,720 was eligible to receive commodities on a ďŹ rst come, ďŹ rst served basis, at the Civic Center in Belle Plaine. At the meeting of the school board, John A. Schoell was chosen to ďŹ ll the vacancy occasioned by the death of his father. M. E. Bancroft of Mankato was selected principal of the Belle Plaine School at a salary of $60 a month. He was the brother of our former photographer, C. D. Bancroft.

The new grain crop was coming to market. Early yields were winter wheat at 25 – 30 bushels and spring wheat at 9 – 15, but oats were very poor, with some farmers not bothering to cut their oats. Gus Brandt, prominent Blakeley Tyrone farmer, announced that he and his wife were going to retire from farming. H. H. Bertuleit and family, who had made their home in Belle Plaine for several years, disposed of all their household goods and moved to Delaware. He was the most active man in the Legion while here. Albert Splettstoeser bought a 75-foot frontage on Meridian Street and made ready to erect a home on it. At West Union Church took place the marriage of Miss Hildebur Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Anderson, to Edward Heimark of Lake Park, in which city the couple established their home. Dr. W. C. Bromaghim discontinued his veterinary practice in order to devote full time to his work with the state livestock sanitary board in St. Paul, but would continue his residence in Belle Plaine. Eileen, 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John J. McDevitt, died and the funeral was held from Sacred Heart Church. C. A. Neil, our justice of the peace, was offered the chance by a stranger to buy a horse for ten dollars but turned it down. Shortly after, the road contractor called and wanted something done about catching a thief who stole one of his horses. Neil and the contractor took up the chase and found where the horse had been sold to a Carver County farmer, who immediately traded it in on a team at Cologne. The thief was nabbed in Minneapolis. The fourteen brothers and sisters in the Tom Brown family and their families assembled at the farm of Mrs. and Mrs. Elmer Denzer at St. Thomas for a reunion celebration. All the Browns were present, expect Andrew who was in Los Angeles. To pay for the street paving, the borough council offered a bond issue of $25,000, which was readily sold at 4ž% interest. tor Dawn Meyer said the city welcomes donations, but it has speciďŹ c policies governing people placing private property in city parks. The city doesn’t want people leaving a sofa or a bathtub in a city park. The same thing goes for pianos, Meyer said. Along with concerns about unscheduled late-night concerts waking up downtown residents, there is also a liability component to the city’s policy. The City of Belle Plaine doesn’t want to be ďŹ nancially responsible for any off-key activity involving private property it didn’t even know was placed on municipal property. After retrieving the piano as the city requested Friday afternoon, Hill conceded he forgot to inform the city of his desire to help residents bring pleasant melodies to the downtown. The “inclement weatherâ€?, however, came from Belle Plaine City Hall. Later Friday morning, staff from Belle Plaine Public Works reported the piano in the park. A police ofďŹ cer was dispatched to Keys 4/4 Kids’s ofďŹ ces and asked the piano be removed from the park. Hill was disappointed and confused. Keys 4/4 Kids has placed dozens of donated pianos – used instruments refurbished here in Belle Plaine – at various locations around the Twin Cities. It is even in the process of donating a piano decorated by ChatďŹ eld Elementary School students to the school.

Good food and great music by the Charlie Sticha Band.

The New Prague Area Community Band will play a concert at 10 a.m. at the Northfield Days event this Saturday morning. The Weiers sisters, Bonnie Valek, Shirley Bodine, Nancy Simon, Rosie Schoenecker and Deanie Sticha spent Thursday on a tour visiting their aunts and uncles, namely Gert and Richard Meger, Leona Weiers, Viola Michel, Lucille Schmitz and Flavian and Edna Weiers and enjoying Happy Hour with Flavian. We so enjoyed their visits, but, “if we had known they were coming we would have baked a cake!” Humor Corner: Lars and Ole were talking. Said Lars, “ve had some excitement yesterday, my vife and I ver standing in front of a wishing vell and she fell in!!” Ole, “Hmmm….. I never knew dose tings vorked!”

Ushered up by a handsome young Pioneer Power friend, Ricky. Jim Reeder’s Downtown Sound Band played at the dance, and kept Harlan and Nena hopping. We wish the newlyweds a happily ever after. Folks had a fine time at the St.

Patrick Church Festival, many treasures at the Silent Auction and again at the Country Store. Charlie Sticha’s Band was great entertainment, caught a glimpse of Brandon and Garin enjoying the games and later Gina and Emma inspecting the treasures. Our own Father Hessian and KCHK’s Tom Goetzinger were also enjoying the festivities. Many from the Burns clan gathered at Madelyne Wolff’s Madison Lake home on Thursday, July 20. The occasion being - “just to get together.” When you’re over 99 and-ahalf you don’t need a reason for the occasion. Madelyne’s family hosted the event, Marcia, Bernetta, Ray, Jim, and Charles were present. Every guest is special at Madelyne’s, but the very special guest there this time, was Mary Grace O’Brien, Madelyne’s 96 year and-ninemonth-old sister! Kolacky Days this weekend! Wa-hoo! See ya there.

Driving Through Arlington on Hwy. 5? Tap the Brakes If you’re driving through Arlington, check your speedometer. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) recently recommended lower speed limits on sections of Highway 5 through the city. But they’re not as slow as the city wanted. The study the city requested MnDOT perform earlier this spring recommended the 45 mph zone on Highway 5 in the northeast section of the city be

reduced to 40 mph. The city council wanted it trimmed to 30 mph. A 60 mph section of the highway should be moved further to the east than it is currently located. The city also wanted it reduced to 30 mph. The city asked MnDOT, in its written request, to perform a study because it was “extremely important” speed limits be reduced. Cities can request speed studies; MnDOT sets speed limits on roadways in the state.

Kolacky Days Adds New Events to Annual Festival Organizers of Montgomery’s community festival – Kolacky Days – have added a few new wrinkles to promote community involvement. This year marks the start of three brand new events. After surveying community members’ interest, organizers are implementing a medallion hunt, a prune-pit spitting con-

test, and an outdoor movie. The movie will be run through Tri-City United School District Community Education. Kolacky Days run this weekend, July 28-30. A complete list of activities is available online at montgomerymn.org or by telephone at (507) 953-0094.

was lights out, going three innings while only giving up a hit and no runs. A win wasn’t meant to be, however, as the Tigers could only muster three hits and one run. Jordan starting pitcher Joe Lucas was perfect through six innings before giving up singles

to Aiden Ladd and Pat Schultz. Sarsland also had a single – the only other hit for the Los Tigros. Terrio had the lone RBI, on a ďŹ elder’s choice in the eighth inning. Overall, Teenage Tiger played pretty well but couldn’t come away with the win.

A Belle Plaine base runner and Henderson shortstop collided just off second base as the runner scrambled to return to the base.

GAC Gets $40 Million Gift for Facility, Scholarship, Endowment

B.P. School Board OKs Facility Funding for Maintenance Plan Funding for facility maintenance in the next year will primarily cover funding to resurface the eight-lane track at the Belle Plaine Athletic Complex, build the restroom/concession stand/storage and observation building at the softball complex, and health & safety projects. Monday evening (July 24), the board approved a plan to provide funding for the maintenance of its facilities over the next decade. The plan is the key to an application to the state for new long-term maintenance money. The money is a blend of state aid based on enrollment and money levied locally. The funding is at $518,684 for 2018. It is expected to jump to $678,822 annually for 2019 to 2027. The board unanimously approved the request to the Minnesota Department of Education with no discussion at the business meeting. The exact facility maintenance projects the school district will work on has yet to be formalized, said Chuck Keller, the district’s business manager.

An anonymous $40 million gift will allow Gustavus Adolphus College to provide for its students and facilities for years to come. The college recently announced receiving the gift from a couple who are alumni. The donation is the largest in the college’s history and one of the largest individual donations to a private post-secondary school in Minnesota history, the St. Peter Herald recently reported. GAC plans to allocate the money for three long-term uses – scholarship funding, seed money for a $70 million renovation for Nobel Hall of Sciences, and an endowment fund. The scholarship will help high-achieving students, those with GPAs of 3.8 or better. The gift will push the college’s endowment fund to over $165 million, according to a GAC press release. Sibley East OKs Free Admission to Sporting Events for Students Aiming to improve school spirit and attendance at Sibley East athletic events, the Sibley East School Board recently approved a free-admission policy for students. Modeled after St. Peter School District’s activities admission policy, Sibley East Elementary School students will receive free admission to athletic events with a paid adult admission, the Gaylord Hub recently reported. Students in sixth through 12th

grades will receive free admission with a school ID. The district will continue to offer adults age 62 and older with identiďŹ cation free admission to athletic events. The district is considering eliminating the admission fee for students to music events. The board will discuss the proposal at an upcoming meeting. BPHS Activities Director John Bergs said the district is considering a similar move for Belle Plaine students.

State Auditor Rebecca Otto worked with the legislature to pass a bill reducing county program aid by the amount a county takes in through its driver diversion program. The diversion program has the support of Sibley County Sheriff Bruce Ponath and County Attorney David Schauer, who see it as a teaching tool to promote better driving behavior. So far this year, the county has had 115 drivers in the diversion program. There were 251 drivers in it during 2016 and a total of 5,373 between 2006 and 2017. Schauer brought the proposal to nix the diversion program to the county board’s June 27 meeting. His proposal was a late addition to the board’s agenda. The board, led by Commissioner Bill Pinske, was disappointed about the loss of the program and the legislation state lawmakers approved.

A year after setting conversation on a dog park aside, the Chaska City council and its park board are again discussing a possible site for a pooch park with a tentative 2018 opening in mind. The Chaska Herald recently reported the three options discussed include a municipallyowned 11-acre site on the west side of the city, a ďŹ ve-acre par-

cel owned by Chaska Investment off Pioneer Trail, and a nine-acre parcel near Chaska Community Center which is privately owned. Park board members reportedly feel the ďŹ ve-acre parcel is too small. Councilors and city staff seemingly favor the 11-acre parcel, though access on a heavily traveled road is a concern.

Blood on the inner forearm of a Henderson batter was enough to convince the umpire to award the batter first base.

Belle Plaine catcher Aiden Ladd tagged a Henderson Tiger runner out at the plate in the second inning of the Belle Plaine Tigers’ loss to Henderson Friday night in Belle Plaine.

Town Team Baseball

Tigers Stumbling as Playoffs Near by Brett Kruschke, Matt Schultz & Mike Schultz The Tiger Town Team won its fifth straight game July 7, pushing above .500 for the first time all season, at 10-9. Since then, the locals have lost five straight – all but one of them a River Valley League contest – dropping Belle Plaine to 10-14 (4-8 RVL). Just two games remain before the Region 6C playoffs begin Aug. 4. Friday (Jul 28), the Tigers will venture to Arlington for a 7:30 p.m. first pitch, looking to avenge a 15-13 shootout loss May 7. Sunday is the regular-season finale, as St. Peter visits at 6 p.m. on Senior Citizens’ Night. Senior citizens will receive free admission, and Ernie Stumpf will be playing old-time polka music on his concertina. The Plainesmen lost at St. Peter July 9 – the first setback of the current losing streak – 13-9. Follow the Tigers on their Web page -- The Web home is bptigertown.com -- or on social media, at “bptigertown” on both Facebook and Twitter. Did you know Tiger Park even has a Facebook page? (Facebook.

com/BPTigerPark). Gaylord 11, Tigers 1 El Tigre travelled to Gaylord July 18 for the first of three league games on the week. It wasn’t pretty for the local nine, as they managed just one hit – by Nathan Herman, off Islanders’ starting pitcher McCoy Rodning. Mitchel Stier started the game and threw into the fourth inning before giving way to Jonny Vinkemeier, who finished the fourth and threw the fifth. Pat Schultz worked the sixth inning and that was all she wrote, as poor defense and well-placed hits by Gaylord resulted in enactment of the 10-run rule. Henderson 10, Tigers 8 Fans all love a giveaway, and a good crowd showed up for the annual fan appreciation night. The one giveaway they didn’t enjoy, however, was the hometown Tigers coughing up a four-run lead and a victory that appeared to be in their back pocket Friday (July 21). Tiger pitcher Joe Pomije carried a 6-2 lead to the fifth inning and got the first man on a

pop-up to shortstop. A single, an error and a walk to the next three batters loaded the bases and that was it, as manager Mike Schultz was playing for keeps. The Henderson Tigers greeted reliever Vinkemeier with a tworun double, and four runs came in before the frame was over. It was a new ballgame, at six runs apiece. Team Tigertown took its last lead of the night in the bottom of the fifth, when rookie Jonathan Schmidt scored on a Little League home run. However, Vinkemeier was tagged out at home before the catcher’s errant, follow-up toss allowed Schmidt to score. Henderson tied the game again in the sixth inning, then took the lead for good in the eighth. Carsen Ladd was coming off a 1-2-3 seventh inning, but the eighth started error-walk-walk, summoning Josh Terrio into a precarious predicament. Two runs came across and another in the ninth, as Henderson’s Greg Graham collected an RBI double for his fourth hit of the night. He reached base in all six plate appearances.

Belle Plaine manager Mike Schultz took issue with the call.

Our heroes scored once in the ninth to cut the score to 10-8, on an RBI single by rookie Tyler O’Brien – the leadoff man’s third hit of the night. Carsen Ladd came up with two outs and the bases loaded, but a comebacker to the mound ended the threat and the ballgame. Belle Plaine lashed out 15 hits but paid dearly for its five defensive errors. Joining O’Brien in the multi-hit parade were Matt Schultz (3-for-5), Carsen Ladd (2-for-5) and Jared Miller (2-for-5). Brody Curtiss made his town-team debut, delivering a pinch-hit double in the ninthinning. Jordan 2, Tigers 1 After a tough loss Friday night, El Tigre squared off against perennial RVL champ Jordan on Sunday night (July 23), looking to get the Tiger Train back on the tracks. Nathan Herman got the start and threw well, going five innings and giving up only three hits and two runs. Wes Sarsland threw next and

After gobbling up a ground ball, Belle Plaine’s Jonny Vinkemeier threw out a Henderson runner during Friday night’s game at Tiger Park.

Belle Plaine scored twice in the seventh inning but couldn’t come all the way back to defeat Plato in the American Legion district playoffs.

Belle Plaine generated plenty of offense against Plato -- six runs and nine hits -- but suffered a season-ending loss Friday in Le Sueur.

Tigers Suffer Season-Ending Loss The Belle Plaine American Legion baseball team saw its season come to a disappointing end with a tough 9-6 loss to Plato Friday afternoon in Le Sueur. Belle Plaine was relegated to the district tournament’s losers’ bracket July 15 when the Tigers fell to Goodhue, 5-4. They tried to fight their way toward the championship game, defeating Sibley East, 11-5, Sunday (July 16) to advance to the clash with Plato. The game was moved from

Waterville to Le Sueur Friday morning (July 21) after a heavy rainfall early that morning. In Le Sueur, on a field the Tigers know well from their battles with Le Sueur-Henderson High School, Belle Plaine relied on its resiliency to stay in the game. Defensive miscues helped Plato take a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Belle Plaine rallied, scoring single runs in the second and third frames. But Plato came back, scoring four times in the fifth frame to jump to a 7-2

advantage. The Tigers rallied, scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth to trim Plato’s lead to 7-4. Plato scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the sixth inning. Two runs in the sixth inning gave Plato a 9-4 lead over the Tigers. Belle Plaine mounted one last stand, scoring twice in its last at-bat. But the Tigers couldn’t come through with another clutch hit as the game ended with runners stranded in scor- Sparkling defense, like this over-the-shoulder catch, kept the Belle Plaine Legion team in the game against Plato Friday. ing position.

Cologne Ready to Turn Its Focus to New Parcel for Senior Housing Expecting it won’t be able to reach common ground with the seller in its offer to buy a parcel of land for senior housing, the Cologne City Council is willing to accept the outcome of what is deemed as its best offer. Without an agreement, the council will begin to look at other parcels for the housing initiative. The city had hoped to buy land at 401 Benton Street West from the Klein family for multi-unit style senior housing. The land is listed for $350,000. The city’s initial offer was $280,000. At its July 17 meeting, the city council directed City Administrator Jesse Dickson to make a counter-offer. The amount of that offer remains private at the recommendation of City Attorney Larry Harris. Both sides have shown some flexibility in

a request for a dog park from Art Bickford. He brought the request for a place for dogs to run to the council’s July 17 meeting. Dickson plans to survey residents this weekend at Glad Days to see if they are interested in the idea. The city’s quandary is that most dogs in Cologne live in houses north of Highway 212, but most of the available city-owned land for a dog park is south of the highway, Dickson said. “Right now, we don’t have a lot of options north of 212, Lein said. Dickson sees the proposal as an amenity to residents. negotiating a possible sale, but the two sides are still not close enough to consummate an agreement, Dickson said. “They’re stuck on a number. We’re stuck on a number, said Mayor Matt Lein. “Our offer is still there. It’s still on the table. Providing a housing option for Cologne’s senior citizens is important to the city council, the mayor said. If the two sides can’t reach an agreeable price, Lein said the council would look at other properties it might consider. “It’s something people have talked about in town for 10 years, Lein said. “We want to have a place for our seniors who still want to live here.

Principals in the Park Belle Plaine School District elementary school principals Liann Hanson (left) and Kim DeWitt met with students during a recent “Principals in the Park session at Union Square Park. The last of the three sessions is this afternoon, 1:30 p.m., at Court Square Park. The meetings, which include cool treats, give children a chance to chat with students about their summer activities and prepare for the coming start of the school year.
