ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THIRD YEAR
BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA, JULY 2, 2014
Reaching Head High by the Fourth of July Orin Kruschke said he experienced some storm-related erosion damage on his ranch in Blakeley Township but that his corn is “doing great,” as evident from this photo taken on Monday. He said his land is on the sandier side, which in wet years like this is a benefit. Many other area farmers are not as fortunate as corn in some fields is struggling to make it to even knee high on the Fourth of July, which decades ago was the norm but not so good nowadays.
Road Repairs Has Counties Looking to Federal Government Two weeks after areas roads were inundated with rain, floods and mud, counties are looking to the federal government for help paying for the cleanup and repairs. In Scott County, floodwaters still cover Highway 101 between downtown Shakopee and Chanhassen/County Road 61. High water is also keeping Minnesota River crossings in Jordan (County Road 9) and Chaska (Highway 41) closed. The submerged roads leaves Highway 25 in Belle Plaine and Highway 169 in Shakopee as the county’s lone river crossings. The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) installed a temporary trafficcontrol light at the intersection

backed up for several blocks. In Blakeley, Scott County is looking for money from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help pay for flood- and storm-related damage. FEMA officials began reviewing storm damage across southern Minnesota this week. In Scott County, County Road 6 (Union Trail/the Blakeley Mitch Rasmussen, road) between Blakeley and Scott County Belle Plaine, and county roads Highway engineer 1 and 60 between Blakeley and Highway 169 were damaged severely by the June 19 storm of Main Street and Highway 25 that dumped almost eight inchin Belle Plaine Thursday (June es of rain on already-saturated 26) to facilitate moving traffic ground. through Belle Plaine. by Dan Ruud A city project that’s been in the works for months is coming to fruition and Belle Plaine High School student Wyatt Herrmann is about to complete a big step toward becoming an Eagle Scout. Wyatt, a member of Belle Plaine Boy Scouts Troop 324, has overseen the building of more than a half-dozen target frames that will be placed at the soon-to-be Belle Plaine Public Archery Range, which will be located on about two acres of county-owned land on County Road 6 (Blakeley road) just beyond Belle Plaine city limits. It’s expected to open later this month. The son of Dan Herrmann and Ann Herrmann, Wyatt, 15, has been involved in scouting since the first grade. “My parents signed me up for it and I just stuck with it. It’s

Blakeley on Road to Recovery by Dan Ruud Restoring normalcy to the village of Blakeley and the surrounding hillsides and roads is still a long ways off but each day progress is being made in that direction. Some of the dozen-plus individuals and families evacuated due to flooding and mudslides have returned as power has been restored and road and erosion cleanup continues on a daily basis. Even though they were able to “tend to some things” at their home of 43 years in the center
of the village on Monday, Dick and Suzanne Burmeister will not be able to move back until telephone service is restored. Dick recently suffered a stroke and is on a heart monitor, and he and Suzanne are not comfortable with moving back at this time. They’ve been staying with nearby family until they can return to Blakeley fulltime. The Burmeisters said their home has been flooded a number of times over the decades but this was the first time they “had to move out.”
Dick said he’s pleased with the progress that’s been made in Blakeley the past 10 days or so, adding that, “I think the county and construction outfit are doing a fine job (clearing the roads and stabilizing things).” The Burmeisters and other residents of the village and surrounding countryside expressed big relief when the heavy rains that were in the forecast this past weekend did not fully materialize. Although some rain

Business is Booming at RES B.P.’s Vanasek Enjoying Busy Time of Year at Area Pyrotechnics Firm
Edward Vanasek still enjoys a good fireworks show, regardless of whether the company he’s partially owns is producing it or not. Fireworks, whether they burst close to the ground or hundreds of feet into the sky, he said, is just something that gets into your blood and stays there. Vanasek, a Belle Plaine resident, is one of three owners of RES Specialty Pyrotechnics, a fireworks firm located just south of Union Hill in Le Sueur County’s Derrynane Township. The other owners include Steve Coman, the company’s chief executive officer, and Kent Orwoll. Being part owner – even one in so-called semi-retirement, he said – doesn’t afford Vanasek, a 70-year-old former accountant much downtime this time of year. This week, RES will enjoy 20 percent of its business for 2014. Its staff and technicians will produce approximately 60 fireworks shows in between July 3-8. Vanasek spent Monday driving to Northfield to pick up a truck. Later in the day, he was driving a truck to another site. Meanwhile, crews at the small company have been working feverishly. The staff not only loads vehicles with the tubes and equipment needed to produce a show, but also manufacturing pyrotechnics for presentations in communities large and small. For most of the year, RES employs about 20 people full- and part-time. Its clients include communities like Belle Plaine and Bloomington, Waterville and one of the company’s first clients, Lakeville. The Minnesota Twins contract with RES for fireworks when one of the hometown nine clobbers a home run or after a victory. The company has worked for every major sports franchise in the Twin Cities plus the St. Paul Saints, Vanasek said. Its corporate clients are a who’s who of the business sector -- Target, ReMax, Cargill and Microsoft. The locally made fireworks are sold to cruise lines, Las Vegas hotels and casino for their use, and performers. The shows make up the remaining 40 percent, with international presentations -- Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Macau – amounting to about a third of the shows. The shells people see exploding several hundred feet from the ground are imported, primarily from China. The rule of thumb is that one inch of the diameter of the shell equals about 100 feet of height before explosion. The biggest shells are about 10 inches and weigh approximately 20 pounds. His dad is the troop’s assistant scoutmaster. As a means of achieving that honor, Wyatt met with city of Belle Plaine staff months ago to talk about some of the issues in the city and possible projects he could take on to help his community, which is a common means for completing merit projects on the path to becoming an Eagle Scout. When he learned that an archery range was being proposed for Belle Plaine, Wyatt knew that was something he would Chris and Kristy Bieder of like to get involved in. pen, Wyatt said. Wyatt’s parents, as well as Troop 324 Scoutmaster Chris Stier and a half-dozen other members of the troop, were at Wyattt’s home Saturday helping with the assembly. The city last year allocated about $1,500 for the creation of an archery range, money intended for targets and other equipment. The chamber of commerce recently contributed another $1,500 for archery range amenities, which is proposed to include a platform for archers who prefer to be elevated while practicing. Belle Plaine Community Development Director Chelsea Alger said Wyatt was a big help in keeping the archery range project going. “I’ve been very impressed from the beginning. He’s been great to work with. I’ve had to do little. He did all the paperwork he needed to get the scouts’ approval and coming up with the design concept and materials list needed (for the target frames), Alger said. The city expects the range will suit an array of people, from the casual archer to the skilled and experienced bow hunter.
is valued at approximately $25,000. Most communities are slow to switch firms handling fireworks shows, he said. Something going wrong typically results in a community seeking bids from one of the companies like RES. Once RES wins a contract, Vanasek works with the company’s sales people to help choreograph a show. They have come back with a sense of what the client is seeking in a fireworks display. The fireworks are encased in paper, thin cardboard and other combustible materials. Black powder propels them toward the heavens. A variety of other powders and chemicals give them the color, shape and sparkle that draws a crowd reaction. Oooooooh, aaaaaaaaah. Vanasek enjoys the reaction. His daughter, Tracy, and her husband, Erv, work for RES. She’s a technician and he works in business development. Vanasek joined RES in the early 1990s. He learned the business from the basics, setting up shows, lighting fuses and later cleaning up. By the mid-1990s, companies used electronics to fire off the pyrotechnics. Computers are now the standard, especially when the show is synched to music. “It’s an evolution, I guess, Vanasek said. He has learned plenty over the years. A good show lasts about 25 minutes. A good finale should almost overwhelm the audience. The larger and more complicated the show, the longer and more technical the setup. A crew from RES Specialty Pyrotechnics will begin setting up its July 3 show near Hyland Park in Bloomington early in the morning or possible the afternoon of July 2. Setup for the Bar-B-Q Days show starts in the morning and should be done in afternoon. It all depends on the size of the
show, he said. He’ll help set up the Belle Plaine show. It’s one of the five shows on RES’s calendar Vanasek works personally. “It’s nice to have that local involvement, he said.

fell, it was not close to the 3-5 inches that was forecast for the weekend. “Thank God for that,” Suzanne said. The Minnesota River crested in Blakeley the middle of last week and has been receding since. Dick said his property experienced some water and mud invasion, but quite a bit of that has been cleaned up. Families and relief crews have been working together to cleanup the village and surrounding roads and countryside. It will be “a long time” before some of the main roads, including county roads 6 and 60, can reopen. Railroad crews have also been at work daily to restore the tracks and get trains running again soon.
As for some good news, Weldon said inspections revealed that no structural damage occurred to any of the homes in Blakeley. He also said that the Belle Plaine Fire Department assisted with the removal of much of the trash. Chad Ostlund of Minnesota Homeland Security Emergency Management was also at the meeting, telling the audience that he is the main contact person for individual assistant programs, including small grants and/or low interest loans that may become available for area flood victims who sustained damage to their homes or personal items. He encouraged everyone to make a list of damage estimates in the event that FEMA declares the region eligible for such assistance. Waconia Must Move Launching Pad for July 4 Fireworks
Who would’ve thought a zebra mussel could force the relocation of the launching pad for the popular fireworks show over Lake Waconia? The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) among others. The barge the Waconia Chamber of Commerce uses to move equipment for the Independence Day pyrotechnics presentation to Coney Island in the middle of the lake doesn’t pass the rules the DNR issued, rules meant to thwart the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS). Farmers Market Corner The vendors have been enjoying their time at the Belle Plaine Farmers Market, we just need more shoppers. Come down and check us out as the produce (finally) rolls in. Last week brought fresh strawberries, peas, lettuce, radishes and green beans. There will be more of the same this week with hopes of beets and summer squash making an appearance. Of course, if fresh isn’t available, you can always find the pickled variety of most vegetables. Stock up for your Independence Day parties! Fresh vegetables on the grill are always a huge hit. The crowd cheered as Jen-
nifer pulled in with her brown minivan. What made everyone so happy? Jennifer is better known as the egg roll lady. She wheeled out her propane, oil and huge pan of egg rolls and wantons and even stirred up some Pad Thai. The line started and there were many satisfied customers. She’ll be back and you know you want some. The Belle Plaine Farmers Market is held every Wednesday from 3:30-6:30 p.m. May through Oct. 15 at Court Square Park. Vendors are welcome! You can like us on Facebook for seasonal information and recipes. For more information, contact Lisa Fahey at 952-8735665 or Diane Skelley, 952873-2467.

For triathlon participants, the same amount of biking and running or walking is required with the addition of swimming 2.5 aquatic miles. Participants log their mileage on a personal tracking sheet and submit weekly progress totals for display on The Fitness Center bulletin board. New this year is an optional weight-loss division for those looking to shed pounds this summer. These participants will be kept accountable during the challenge with weekly weigh-ins at The Fitness Center and food intake tracking. “The Lazyman has proven to be an engaging community event, anticipated year after
year. We’re excited to help participants make strides toward better health again this year, says Jill Rohloff, director of The Fitness Center. A prize drawing will take place shortly after the challenge ends for those who meet the mileage requirements. Prizes for both biathlon and triathlon participants include a one-year membership to The Fitness Center, a $100 sporting goods store gift certificate and $50 in “Fitness Center Bucks. All participants receive an insulated water bottle at sign-up. You can accrue bicycling and running or walking miles outdoors, and members of The Fitness Center can log miles using cardio equipment within the facility. Non-members receive a seven-day pass to The Fitness Center, which can be used during the duration of the Lazyman event. Recently, I was doing some reading and I strayed onto an article about solar energy. They were talking about safely harnessing large amounts of energy. It was way too technical for me so I did not read much of the article. I am no physicist or scientist by any stretch of the imagination. However, thinking about it later during one of our Summer Reading Programs, I would say that as a librarian, Mom and Grandmother, I have learned a thing or two about harnessing and directing great amounts of energy. Your young readers have that energy and they are going to release it one way or another. It is best released creatively. I am sure other moms know what I mean. Make use of the Bookawocky Summer Reading Programs to get the most out of that energy. We have reading opportunities, programs and some creative activities lined up to burn off some excess energy. Here is a brief list of activities. Wednesday, July 2, starting at 4 p.m. we are having an Angry Bird Live Drop-in Party. Friday, July 4 all Scott County Libraries will be closed. Have a safe 4th of July holiday. Book Clubs on July 8, 9 and 10: call the library or check the website. Some features on our Scott County Library System web page are meant to assist parents in keeping their young readers busy with the Summer Reading Program. Stop in or go online for information. The first clue for the 2014 Bar-B-Q Days Medallion Hunt is published below. Additional clues, if necessary, will be published in the July 9 and 16 Heralds. The same rules apply as last year. The search area includes all of the Belle Plaine city limits). A map of the city limits can be found at www.belleplainemn.com. The medallion is located on public property and is not more than 6 feet off the ground. It is not on the Historical House property or inside Tiger Park
baseball field. Those searching on foot are encouraged to use the tunnel to cross Highway 169. The medallion is about 2 inches in diameter and has "Belle Plaine Bar-B-Q Days" inscribed on it. The prize for finding it is $100 in Belle Plaine Bucks. If you find it, call Tom Meger at Golden Touch Jewelry at 873-2265. The coin was found last year by Ed Witt following the posting of a fourth clue the first day of Bar-B-Q Days. He found it stuffed in the dirt up against a

BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA
Thirty Years Ago This Week
Coming to the Patients The Belle Plaine Lutheran Home’s in-house dental office in 1984 was made possible through the efforts of, from left, Dr. Robert Miller, Lutheran Home Administrator Rev. Robert W. Schlicht and Dr. Steven Jabs. Two New Prague brothers, John and Mark Berg, ages 16 and 14, were plucked from the overflow of the Minnesota River that Friday evening as they clung to a tree in the swollen stream. The boys, accompanied by Father Dennis Dempsey of St. Wenceslaus Church in New Prague, had been on a bike outing when they apparently attempted to cross the flooded bottom road leading into Blakeley. As the water deepened, the bikes were swept away. It was the second week in a row that a river rescue had to be made in Blakeley. Marilyn O’Brien was pictured in the Herald that week standing in a cornfield near her home, where some of the stalks on the Fourth of July exceeded 6 feet. Mrs. O’Brien said the field was planted by Roger Stier before the final snow fell that spring. Due to an increase in case loads, the Scott County Board approved the hiring of three additional assistant county attorneys for a limited period of time at a salary of $23,542 each. The Bar-B-Q Days Queen’s Banquet would be held July 15. The 22 candidates in 1984 were Jane Bigaouette, Ann Buesgens, Sue Buszmann, Bev Effertz, Pam Farrar, Bernadette Gregory, Heidi Harsh, Susie Hartman, Vicki Hoelz, Debbie James, Patti Laabs, Ann Manthe, Sarah Riesgraf, Sandi Schmidt, Jody Schmitz, Laurie Schroeder, Valerie Sexton, Jenny Steinessen, Doreen Taylor, Susie Siegler, Romi Schneider and Stacy Kerkow. A 37-year-old Le Sueur man, Dennis C. Johnson, was killed in an auto accident in Sharon Township that Sunday. Doreen Taylor, daughter of Robert Taylor of rural Belle Plaine, was one of the top 15 semifinalists at the 13th annual Miss National Teenager Pageant. Miss Taylor won the Essay portion, for which she was awarded a $4,000 scholarship
to Millikin University in Decator, Ill. She also won the $7,000 Johnson & Wales scholarship in Providence, R.I. A free kiddie run would be added to that year’s feature of the Bar-B-Q Days newlynamed “Bull Run, on Sunday morning, July 22. The Belle Plaine town baseball team split two games that week, pounding Chaska 12-2 and losing to Shakopee 9-8. Terry Knop pitched the whole game against Chaska and got the win.
60 Years Ago (1954)
In Oakland, Calif., occurred the death of Mrs. Henry Sunders, formerly Johanna McCarthy of Belle Plaine. She was a daughter of John and Katherine McCarthy, pioneer settlers of this community. Miss Rosemary McCourtney was to portray “Sister Barbara in the Rochester Story at the centennial pageant being presented in Rochester. Arthur O. Johnson, native of West Union, passed away at Nagel Hospital in Waconia at the age of 66. It was the quietest July 4th in Belle Plaine that most could remember. Carol Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oswin Scott of Carver, became the bride of Paul A. Moen, son of Mr. and Mrs. R.A. Moen of Mankato. Mrs. Maurice Hanlon, nee Sharkey, died at her home in Minneapolis. She was a native of Derrynane Township. At St. Thomas Church was to take place the silver jubilee of its pastor, Rev. Michael P. Foy. Otto Sellnow, Belle Plaine native, died unexpectedly of pneumonia at his home in Staples. He was 58 years old. Beverly Fifield, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B.G. Fifield of St. Peter, became the bride of
Merwyn Roufs, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Roufs of Belle Plaine. Norwood’s pioneer structure, the old Peter Effertz hotel, built in 1872, was being wrecked to make way for a remodeled smaller building. Ray Ahrens and Leander Gansen were chairmen in charge of Centennial vault burial at the borough park. There were to be various articles, papers, records and pictures put in a sealed vault, which would not be opened until the year 2054. Another big feature had been added to the Centennial for entertainment. There was to be a street dance on the west half of Main Street. Evengeline Kohman, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Anton Kohman of Carver, became the bride of Dale M. Stai, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry M. Stai of Sisseton, S.D. A baby born to Mr. and Mrs. Arnold McConnell, Blakeley, was said to be the largest ever born in St. Francis Hospital. The young man came into the world weighing 13 pounds and measured 21 1/4 inches. He was delivered by Dr. C.J. Olson.
90 Years Ago (1924)
As the growing season went into July, there was no complaint regarding crop prospects. Reuben Frank and his bride arrived from Oregon for a visit with his folks in Belle Plaine Township. St. John’s Lutheran Church observed Children’s Day with a picnic in the grove on the Mrs. Henry Holste farm. Mrs. S.A. Hooper of St. Paul, accompanied by the former Bessie Hooper from Dallas, Ore., were back for a visit in their girlhood home. It was Bessie’s first visit in 30 years,
Most Belle Plaine people went to Jordan for the Fourth, where the Belle Plaine ball team played, losing a 6-7 game. The fake Army officer who figured in a check-forging stunt in Belle Plaine earlier that year and pulled a gun on Fred Keup when the latter attempted to apprehend him, was finally captured in St. Paul. Police found in his room several nifty Army uniforms. Prohibition had brought hijacking to this area. When two Jordan men were hauling a load of moonshine to the city, a car with two men in it forced the Jordan car into the ditch. When the driver of the moonshine car was slow in responding to the “hands up demand, he got a bullet in his arm. The state highway department was ready to spend $200,000 on improving the main trunk highway through Scott County from Shakopee to the Le Sueur County line. Speeding automobiles with fatal results were not unknown. In south Le Sueur County, three men met death when their auto raced down a hill, and eight persons were killed at a railroad crossing at Eagle Lake, west of Mankato. All the immediate family and relatives of Mr. and Mrs. Conran Schlingman gathered at the family home in Blakeley for a big reunion on the 4th.
120 Years Ago (1894)
Belle Plaine did not make much effort to celebrate the Fourth, but drew a large crowd. There were competing dance platforms. Attorneys M.E. Foley of Adrian and P.W. Morrison of Norwood were the speakers of the day. In the horse race, the Ronayne nag from St. Thomas won, and in the pony race John Mann’s steed from Faxon was the winner. St. Paul promoters scheduled a boxing bout in Belle Plaine, but the local public refused to buy tickets at one dollar per. J.H. Johnson, Pat Sherlock and John McGran were delegated to the Populist state convention held in Minneapolis. At the Republican county convention held in Jordan, Sam Bowler, J.C. Morrison and R.J. Henderson were the Belle Plaine delegates. The Belle Plaine Fire Department was organized with 40 members. F.C. Irwin was chief, James Mangan assistant chief, J.A. Schoell secretary and R.A. Stratton treasurer. The foreman of the engine company was Martin Kelleher, of the hose company F.J. Whitlock, and of the hook and ladder company Frank Werrick. The finance committee consisted of H.B. Conlon, D.M. Cavanaugh and Julius Seiberlich. As the railroad strike continued, the local depot force was reduced to one man, and Traynor’s section crew at Belle Plaine and Collins’ crew at Blakeley were also reduced to one man.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, On July 11 I will be participating in the Relay For Life of Scott County which is held at Vaughan Field at Shakopee West Junior High. I have been involved with this event for about 14 years now and I am always amazed at how many people are not aware of it. There is no better place to be and help Finish the Fight against this horrible disease called CANCER! One of the things taking place that afternoon/evening is the Lilly Oncology Canvas Art Exhibit; this Showcase is all original artwork by survivors and caregivers as they make their way through their cancer journeys. I will be making a point to visit that! It will be from 5-7 p.m. in the school. Last year Scott County did a fantastic job of helping us Collect items for the Hope Lodge, the committee also served dinner and provided entertainment in August of last year too. The Relay For Life of Scott County committee was awarded the Community of Hope award from the American Cancer Society for this effort and we share that award with ALL of Scott County! Bringing awareness to Mission, Advocacy and Education is just one of the things that are stimulating about this event and the planning Committee! We are again asking Scott County to bring items for the Hope Lodge this year. Hope Lodge residents LOVE to play bingo and picking out the prize is one of the highlights, so we thought it would be nice to bring prizes for bingo – patients enjoy finding that new item that may not have been there before. Please bring items such as: Note Cards, Puzzle Books, Lotion and Travel size toiletry, Journals – Stationary - Calendars, Soft Slippers, Card games, Small Games like Poker, Slots etc. You could also give Gift cards from Wal-Mart, Target, Michaels and JoAnn’s
just to name a few. Donation boxes will be at each Registration tent. Get Creative and Let’s go above and beyond what was raised last year!! The Relay For Life of Scott County is so exhilarating: from the speakers, to the Dove Release ( which you can be a part of for $10.00) to the lighting of the Luminaries at 9:45 and the Memorial Garden and Video that plays all night long! Please join me and other Survivors, Caregivers and participants who know that Together We Can Find a Cure and Finish the Fight! Walk the track, visit with friends (you're sure to find someone you know there) and enjoy an evening as we raise money so no one has to hear – “You have Cancer again! Foster Pet Care Needed Volunteers are needed to provide temporary foster pet homes for puppies, cats, rabbits, kitten litters and dogs in Carver, Scott and Hennepin counties. The Carver-Scott Humane Society is without a permanent shelter, so all abandoned pets are housed in foster care until permanent adoption occurs. Once or twice a month the foster family comes with the pet to a public adoption day for three hours, held in Eden Prairie and Chaska. The Society provides medical care, food and litter. Volunteers provide a safe, loving home for an average of three to six months. If you could help a needy pet by fostering or donating litter or unopened pet food, please call the Society at 368-3553, line 4. More information about the Society is also available at www.carverscoths.org.

Road Repairs Has Counties Looking to Federal Government (continued from page 1) County Road 51 (West 250th Street) was also damaged by the impacts of the storms, said Mitch Rasmussen, Scott County’s highway engineer. All four county roads were significantly damaged by floodwaters, mudslides and washouts of ravines supporting roadbeds. Scott County is estimating it will cost $100,000 to clean up County Road 6 and $200,000 to clean up County Road 51. Repairs will bring a significantly higher cost. Pavement repairs to County Road 6 could reach $500,000 if Union Pacific Railroad destroyed the road with its heavy equipment hauling materials to repair the tracks running along the road and through Blakeley, Rasmussen said. Damage to the bridge the county built along County Road 6 could reach $700,000. Along County Road 60, Scott County is estimating costs could reach $500,000 if the road is not rebuilt. If Scott County rebuilds it, the cost could reach $2 million. Repairing County Road 1 is the most expensive undertaking. Preliminary estimates on repairing the road could be $2 to $3 million, Rasmussen said. Belle Plaine and Blakeley aren’t the only areas in Scott County to endure road damage. Scott County has over 20 areas along county roads where preliminary damage estimates approach $2 million, he said. The county will be looking to FEMA for financial assistance for repairing and rebuilding roads. Given the amount of traffic some of the rural roads carry, Rasmussen said some roads might not be rebuilt im-
mediately if the county does not receive ample FEMA funding. “No one has an extra $3-$6 million set aside to rebuild roads,” he said. In a case where the ravine supporting the roadbed is washed away, rebuilding the roadbed is a difficult and expensive issue to ponder. “You don’t is the easiest answer,” Rasmussen said. “Soil walls or sheeting is the expensive answer.”
Sibley County
Across the river in Sibley County, Tim Becker, the county’s highway engineer, is pondering the cost and how to repair a 150-plus foot section of County Road 6 (Scenic Byway Road) that washed down the hillside, unable to withstand the water and mud coming down a hillside 70 feet above, he said. The section of County Road 6 that failed is about 2½ miles west of Highway 25, not far from Crahan Lane, in Faxon Township. Becker is looking to FEMA for help. Preliminary estimates say the washout will cost about $1.3 million to repair. Currently, Sibley County’s state aid funding for road repair is $3 million. Even with FEMA money, Becker expects the repairs won’t occur until 2015. Sibley County will be looking for federal or additional state aid to help pay for repairs to washouts along County Road 6. He noted a significant washout along County Road 6 near 291st Avenue between the William Mueller & Sons and Sibley County Aggregate pits. He expects County Road 6 between County Road 5 and Henderson will be open this week.

It is hard to believe that it is July 1st already and the big 4th of July weekend is just around the corner. At school we are busy trying to finalize our hires for next year and work continues on cleaning and updating our facilities and grounds. One of the big changes that will greet students as they return to school is the implementation of our Enhanced Learning Initiative (ELI) – often referred to as our 1 to 1 iPad implementation. In this program, all students in Kindergarten through grade 12 will be provided with an iPad for their use. Students in K through grade 2 will have access to the devices during the school day while all others will be able to take the device home and have access 24/7 during the school year. Before voting to move forward with this program, we had a lengthy debate and discussion about the device that we were going to provide to students. Google ChromeBooks and iPads were both reviewed and both can bring great value to the education process. In the end, we determined that the iPad was the best fit for our district and for what we hope to accomplish with the devices. I want to emphasize that the device alone is not going to change education and will never replace a teacher. The device is a tool to be used by our teachers and students to better allow students to display their learning, to personalize learning to individual needs and to better collaborate on learning with others. We are in the process of setting up Parent Information Nights and the iPad Rollout Nights for early to mid August for parents of students in grades 7-12. Parent Information Nights have been set for August 4, August 5 and August 6 with meeting times at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. At these meetings, parents will be able to learn more about the Enhanced Learning Initiative and will receive the necessary forms required for issuance of the iPad. On August 18th, 19th and 20th, students in grades 7-12 will have the opportunity to pick up their device once all forms and fees are turned in. The Parent Information Nights and the iPad Rollout Nights will be held at Oak Crest Elementary. Students attending Oak Crest will receive their iPads shortly after the school year has begun. Parent Information will be provided during the back to school conferences on Tuesday, Sept. 2nd and Wednesday, Sept. 3rd. Forms and fees will be explained at that time and will be collected then as well. Our goal is to have iPads out to students by the second or third week of school. Finally, for our students in grade K-2 only a signed Acceptable Use Form will be required since these devices will not be leaving school. Once the school year is up and running, devices will be made available to students through their individual classrooms. Our goal is that this will happen by the third or fourth week of school. A letter outlining more details regarding the Enhanced Learning Initiative will be mailed out to all parents of incoming students sometime next week. Have a great 4th of July everyone! As always, if you have any questions about school matters, please feel free to call me at 873-2400 or check our website at www.belleplaine.k12.mn.us. You may also find me on Twitter at @BPTiger716. Minnesota School of Business Out of Business in Shakopee Citing a significant decline in the number of students taking classes at the Minnesota School of Businesses’ Shakopee campus, the school recently announced it is closing the campus in Town Square Mall. communications director. “It’s quite a small footprint there. I think the only way to do that would be up (a second floor) and that’s quite expensive. The ECC school board did not take a vote on the proposal its task forces have worked on formulating since the fall of 2012. Follow-up talks on the recommendations are expected in upcoming meetings, the Chaska Herald recently reported. If the board asks voters for approval, the referendum vote would be in November. If approved by voters in the
district, the work would be done in time for the 2017-18 school year. The district will need the space. By the 2018-19 school year, it expects between 400 and 700 additional students. The proposal, if approved, will provide long-term solutions, said Chanhassen High School Principal Tim Dorway. The district, which includes East Union Elementary School nine miles northeast of Belle Plaine, is not planning any significant changes in its schools’ attendance boundaries until after a referendum vote.

Le Sueur Plans for Interchange, Rest Area Taking Shape
SCHS Gets $45,000 Grant
Plans for a new interchange and rest area along Highway 169 are expected to come into sharper focus at a meeting Friday (June 27) between officials from the City of Le Sueur, engineers from Bolton & Menk, Le Sueur County, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) and Cambria. The meeting is expected to include review of various proposed final designs for an interchange and rest area near the quartz countertop plant in Le Sueur. Mn/DOT’s ideal location for the new five-acre rest area was nixed when the owners of land behind Wolf Motors rejected a
proposal to sell. That leaves a portion of city-owned land by the water tower on the west side of Highway 169 as the most likely site for a rest area replacing the one on the east side of the highway Cambria bought for space to expand its plant in Le Sueur, the Le Sueur NewsHerald recently reported. But much of the $7 million rest stop replacement project is not yet funded. The city received a $2.1 million grant last year. Le Sueur County expects to chip in about $600,000 to the project, money that would improve County Road 28 near the rest area.
The Scott County Historical Society (SCHS) announced it has received a Toro Foundation grant of $45,000 in support of its Museum Garden Landscape Project. This grant will allow the Society to better serve its communities, implement identified strategic plan actions and further its mission. The board and staff discussed in detail the opportunities presented by this grant that will have the biggest impact for the long-term. The project includes designing and implementing a comprehensive, efficient landscape plan that includes: replacing the current inefficient irrigation system, creating a garden that complements the historic 1920s Stans House, and increasing opportunities for educational programs, interpretation and community involvement.

Work Comes in Well Over Budget
The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) has a tough choice to make with the Highway 22 improvement project in Gaylord – scale back the project or pay the higher-thanexpected bid to the only company interested in the job. The improvement project is expected to cost about $10.1 million. William Mueller & Sons of Hamburg was the only bidder for the job. The company offered a bid approximately $1 million over the engineer’s estimate, the Gaylord Hub recently reported. The root of the problem apparently is the number of projects Mn/DOT is conducting in the southern half of the state and the limited number of companies interested or able to take them on. Of the more than 30 projects on Mn/DOT’s schedule, 12 are in southern Minnesota. Eleven of the 12 projects had only one bidder for them. Mn/DOT believes the late start of a busy construction season prompted companies to focus on taking on fewer jobs.

Green Isle Residents Want Answers on The Wrong Kind of Flooding Homeowner Claims Flawed System Backed Sewage into His Basement Jason Voight was one of several Green Isle residents who wanted answers from the city council last Tuesday (June 24). He was one of homeowners who believed the flooding they endured after the June 19 storm could have been avoided or at least been less severe. “I had 20 inches of sewage in my basement,” he told the city council. Residents believe a flawed sanitary sewage system, one allowing infiltration of storm water, led to homeowners along Fourth Street and Western Avenue on the west side of town experiencing sewage backing up into their basements. The foul backups occurred after Green Isle and other area communities received approximately eight inches of rain to alreadysaturated ground June 19. The area around Fourth Street and Western Avenue is the lowest portion of the small city. Voight claimed the issue was raised during a heavy rainfall two years ago. But when the water receded, the issue was dropped. The former city engineer was blamed, though nobody can say how or why. “Something is definitely wrong,” Councilor Mark Wentzlaff said. He supported setting up a meeting to get to the bottom of the current flooding. “We need answers.” Voight claimed he spent over $1,200 the weekend after the storm cleaning up his basement after sanitary waste backed up into the basement on the 700 block of Fourth Street. He said the backup ruined personal items belonging to his children and his family. “It’s all gone,” he said. Three other residents on the block endured similar damage, he said. Voight is also concerned because of reports the manual emergency pump that serves the area was prematurely shut off. He wants to know who’s decision it was to turn off the pump. Belle Plaine “You know how much my house isHerald worth now that it’s flooded twice? Absolutely nothing,” he said. The council endured the comments from Voight and his frustrated neighbors at the June 24 meeting. Mayor Dale ZumBerge and the rest of the council promised residents they

additional stop sign at Third or Seventh streets. But after some discussion, councilors opted against the sign at Third Street and unanimously approved making the corner of Fourth Street and Western Avenue a four-way stop.
Voight and his neighbors also vented their concerns on when the stop sign the council previously approved for Fourth Street at Western would be installed. Voight, speaking for he and neighbors, said motorists drive too fast in the area. “Somebody’s going to get killed,” he said. ZumBerge said he’d heard from “a number of people” -- a number he later said was about a half-dozen – that believe the council’s decision to add a stop sign at Fourth Street was “a dumb idea.” Voight disputed that and said there were several residents in the area that wanted the safety measure. Addressing concerns the single stop sign would not do enough to slow drivers, the council considered adding an
In other action at the June 24 meeting, the Green Isle City Council: • Paid bills totaling $27,285.20. • Discussed ideas for addressing acts of vandalism by a group of juveniles in the community. The ideas included the use of a motion-sensitive game camera and varying the hours the deputy assigned to Green Isle is in the city. • Discussed Green Isle’s curfew ordinance. It is currently 10 p.m. for children age 16 and younger, midnight for children until they reach age 18. • Scheduled a 2015 budget workshop with the city’s financial/budget accounting firm, AEM Financial. It will be held after the council’s July 22 meeting.

New Prague City Pool Options All Have Hefty Price Tag If New Prague wants to upgrade its municipal pool offerings to resident, most of the options come at a significant cost, the city council was recently told. The city council was informed of five possible options. Other than closing the pool and demolishing it, the options all come with a six-figure price tag, possibly more. The cheapest option, the council recently considered is closing the pool (and demolishing it). The cost is $47,400 to $55,200. Repairing the pool is projected to cost between $471,481 and $516,780. Converting the
pool to a spray pad/wet deck area without a pool, the New Prague Times recently reported, would cost from $491,400 to $558,600. Renovating and expanding the pool is projected to cost between $1.4 and $1.6 million. Depending on how much the city wants to spend on the pool, the options include a zero-depth entry for toddlers and a waterslide. The city could also build a new outdoor aquatic facility, a facility that could be expanded. It could be located on the Armory site. Ballpark estimates have it costing around $4.5 million.

Michael Kroells Called on to Fill Big Shoes for Gophers Wrestling Team by Dan Ruud Leonard Levy, Verne Gagne, Brock Lesnar, Cole Konrad and Tony Nelson are all former University of Minnesota wrestling heavyweights who won at least one national championship. Levy won his in 1941, Gagne in 1949, Lesnar in 2000, Konrad in 2006 and 2007, and Nelson in 2012 and 2013. A Belle Plaine kid hopes to add his name to that list of grappling greats in the near future. The University of Minnesota has announced that 2012 Belle Plaine High School graduate Michael Kroells’ role with its wrestling team will greatly inflate for the 2014-15 season. “After training and working behind one of the best heavyweights in Minnesota history, Michael will step into the spotlight this fall as he will be the Gophers starting heavyweight,” stated a release from the U of M Athletics Department. “The Gophers have a storied history in terms of heavyweights and their successes in one of the toughest conferences and weight classes in the country, and Kroells will be no exception as he moves up the ranks.” Other Gopher heavyweights to earn All-American honors on multiple occasions (since 1990) include Billy Pierce, Shelton Benjamin and Olympic medalist Garrett Lowney. Kroells, the son of Larry Kroells and Laura Cunningham, and Lori Kroells, is replacing two-time NCAA Division I heavyweight champion Nelson, who completed his senior season this year. “Yes definitely,” said Kroells, when asked Monday if he up to the challenged. “I’m excited for this season and becoming one of the main guys.” Kroells said his wrestling and scholastics schedule have made it difficult for him to return to Belle Plaine often, mostly just Thanksgiving and Christmas during the school year – a little more during summer, which is also a busy time. Kroells is working as an assistant instructor this summer for Gophers head coach

Big on Studies, Too
Kroells was named the U of M’s Male Student-Athlete of the Month last December. He is an aerospace engineering major in the College of Science and Engineering. His write-up at the U of M states that he was “an incredibly strong student coming out of high school and has continued to impress in his time at the University of Minnesota.” Academic counselor Alissa Allen states: “Michael had another fantastic semester, achieving a 4.0 in very difficult coursework. He puts long hours into both his studies and his sport. He is an incredibly hard worker, and one who does everything he needs to do to be successful here at the University of Minnesota and life after college. I expect his academic successes to continue in future semesters. He is a true studentathlete.” Associate head wrestling coach Brandon Eggum said: “Michael is a great asset to our program. The effort he puts forth both on the mat and in the classroom have made him a vital part of this program. With these great leadership qualities, we have high expectations for him.”
Gray Tigers Drop Two of Three Games The Belle Plaine Gray Tigers over 35 baseball team played three games this past week, taking two on the chin against Prior Lake 4-2 and St. Peter 2-0. They came back to beat the rival Jordan Ahlers on Sunday in Green Isle 15-4. Pitching and defense is the name of the game as the Grays had four pitchers hit the mound this week, but even Gardy would say you have got to hit to win. The Tigers traveled to Prior Lake to face the 7-0 Mariners. The Grays sent out firstyear pitcher Mike Weller, who matched Prior Lake ace Mike Fier in performance until the fifth inning when he gave up two unearned runs. The seventh inning would give the Tigers a chance for a comeback when a grounder hit to first by Terry Knop caused Fier to pull his hamstring while covering first. Base hits by Burgemeister, Weller and Morrison drove in two for Belle Plaine. Then the first intensional walk to Brett Kruschke since little league brought Dave “Greek” Wagner to the plate. With the bases loaded, he laced a ball to short to make the final out of the game and hand the Grays their first loss of the season. Next, the Tigers traveled to St.
Peter to battle last year’s state champions. The Tigers sent Terry Knop to the mound to face St. Peter ace Kurt Moelter. This game was be a pitching dual into the fifth inning with a shutout going for both pitchers. But an error on a fly ball would lead to a run in the fifth for the Saints. The Tiger bats were baffled by Moelter the entire game and could not muster a rally. The Saints put the nail in the coffin with a run in the sixth to lead to the final score of 2-0. The only hits for the Grays were by Wulf and Zellmann. The local nine next headed to the fabled Irish Yard of Green Isle to play the Jordan Ahlers. The Tigers sent veteran lefty Brett Kruschke to the mound looking for his second win of the year. The Grays took a big lead with five runs in the third and three in the fourth on a combination of hits and walks. Kruschke baffled Jordan hitters until he ran out of gas. This found manager Zellmann making his debut pitching for the year and he gave up a hit before inducing a ground ball double play with the bases loaded to get out of the inning. The Tigers added six runs in the sixth to end the game via the 10-run rule. at

could be underway by the fall. The curling portion of the plan covers over half the anticipated cost. A curling arena – six lanes operating year-round -- restaurant and events center is expected to cost about $8 million, the Chaska Herald recently reported. The park renovation plan for Fireman’s and adjacent Schimelpfenig parks will cost $5 million. Schimelpfenig Park will have a horseshoe pit, playground, archery range and plaza where a VFW post’s members can retire flags. Fireman’s Park will also see the addition of a revamped beach and an interactive fountain that replaced the splash pad concept. There will also be a plaza with information on the history of the Chaska Fire Department and the brickyard that operated for many years at the site.

Tigers Tangle With Heavyweights
Supercross at Fairgrounds Marcus Klehr, 16, of Belle Plaine, right, was among those competing in the Motokazie Supercross Series 450 C at the Scott County Fairgrounds Friday night. Others from Belle Plaine competing in the race included Cameron Klehr (age 19) and Joe Ruehling (age 15). Other racers in various divisions from Belle Plaine included Kai Morgan (age 5) and Benton Seifert (age 9).
by Brett Kruschke, Matt and Mike Schultz The nitty gritty of the regularseason schedule is here, littered largely with River Valley League games. Last weekend, the Tigers faced the top teams in both the RVL West and Central divisions – both of whom carried unbeaten league records into the respective contests – coming away with a split. On Friday, the Tigers used extra innings to outlast the St. Peter Saints, who entered with a gaudy 13-2 record and winners of nine in a row. Sunday saw the Tigers mount a late comeback against the Jordan Brewers, but the locals ultimately paid the price for a sloppy defensive effort. Sunday was advertised as the “Day of Baseball, featuring four games at Tiger Park between Jordan and Belle Plaine teams. The 15 year olds took it to their Jordan rivals 8-3 in the first game, followed by the BP Junior Legion squad posting a commanding 10-1 win. The third game of the day saw Jordan get on board with an 8-6 win over the BP Legion team. There was a great turnout of fans, making it a fun day at the old ballyard. Thanks for your support! The Tigers are off for the 4th of July week until hosting the New Ulm Kaiserhoff at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Tuesday’s game at Green Isle has been cancelled by the Irish due to too many league makeup games close to the date. Belle Plaine is 4-2 in RVL play this season and 7-11 overall.
Tigers 4, St. Peter 3 After a loss against Henderson earlier in the week, the Tigers looked to bounce back against the Saints from St. Peter. The Saints came in atop the West Division of the River Valley League and hadn’t lost a league game to that point. This game was a hard-fought battle from both teams and the Tigers came out on top in extra innings. Belle Plaine sent Jake Fiedler to the mound and St. Peter countered with their ace, Matt Lewis. Fiedler was sharp, going six innings and giving up only two runs. But Lewis was also strong and ended up throwing 10 frames and what had to be at least 150 pitches in one of the best complete-game losses you’ll see. Dan Huber threw the final four frames for the Tigers, giving up only one run while earning the win in relief. The game was a back-andforth affair, with St. Peter leading 1-0 after three innings. Belle Plaine led 3-2 after seven and the game was tied at three in the bottom of the 10th when Bradley Lawson hit a two-out double, scoring Huber all the way from first. Jordan 9, Tigers 7 The Brewers came to town in what was the last game of the beautiful ‘Day of Baseball’ at Tiger Park and a battle for first place. Jordan got things going in their initial at-bat when the Tigers allowed the first of what would be many unearned runs. But Belle Plaine would battle back in the
bottom of the first and score twice to take a one-run lead. With August Farruggia on the mound, the score remained that way until the fifth. Some more poorly-played ball helped give the Brewers four runs. Zac Dahlke came in to finish the fifth and throw the sixth. Josh Terrio threw the next two innings before Zach Horning closed out the game by working the ninth. The Tigers made it close by scoring four runs in the eighth to make it 9-7, but they couldn’t muster anymore in the ninth and ended the game with two guys on base. Jake Fiedler led the way at the plate with three hits, followed by Pat Schultz with two. Matt Schultz and Shawn Larson each chipped in one. 2014 Town Tigers Results Through July 1 May 2 vs. St. Ben. Legion Team Off to 5-2 Start
The Belle Plaine Legion baseball team took part in Sunday’s “Day of Baseball at Tiger Park, which featured four games between teams from Belle Plaine and Jordan. Unfortunately for the Legion Tigers, they left the tying run on base in the seventh inning of an 8-6 loss to the Hubmen, who the Tigers defeated earlier this season. Belle Plaine has also posted victories over Le Sueur, Montgomery and Sibley East (twice) en route to compiling a 5-2 record so far this season. River Receding A week ago the intersection of County Road 6 and County Road 5 near the Blakeley bridge was a well underwater. This week, the water is off the roads and workers have been busy removing mud and debris from the surfaces and shoulders.
Ice Cream Social Warren Wolf of Belle Plaine served Lorna Schmidt of Norwood Young America (foreground) ice cream Wednesday afternoon (June 25) at St. John Lutheran Church’s annual ice cream social. She was one of a few hundred people who attended the annual fund-raiser at St. John Lutheran Church.
Sauerkraut Days Refuses to Go Under Happy 104th, Viola
Despite a recommendation from its fire department to cancel Sauerkraut Days due to road and river conditions from the flooding rains of late, the city of Henderson decided to go ahead and hold the annual celebration this past weekend. These parade participants pretty much spelled out that it’s not all gloom and doom in their city, and fortunately the Minnesota River Residents and staff at The Lutheran Home in Belle Plaine celebrated Viola Frazer’s 104th has been receding for about a week now. birthday with cake Monday afternoon. She was born June 8, 1910 and grew up on the farm in South Dakota. She and her late husband, Melvin, lived in Bloomington for 50 years where she worked as a beautician. Their three children reside in California, Minnesota and Arizona. Viola’s secret to a long life: “Pray and be happy.”
Just Killin’ Time
Keeping Traffic Moving Crews from the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) installed a temporary traffic-control light last Thursday at the intersection of Main Street and Highway 25. With river crossings in Shakopee (Highway 101), Chaska (Highway 41) and Jordan (County Road 9) closed because of flooding, the light replaced four-way stop signs that backed up traffic for several blocks in Belle Plaine. The light will be removed once the other river crossings reopen.
Matt Meger (left) and Lee Borgardt didn’t mind that they hadn’t caught much while fishing from what is normally a driveway to the Minnesota River boat landing Sunday afternoon (June 29). If they weren’t catching fish, the two Belle Plaine anglers were simply enjoying a sunny, warm afternoon outdoors. The previous week, floodwaters were several feet farther up the driveway.
