B.P.’s Racing Klehr Brothers Will Kick off the County Fair in Style

Cameron Klehr knows he’ll never hear the end of it if his little brother, Marcus, takes a checkered flag before he does. Tonight at the Scott County Fair’s grandstand, he hopes to keep Marcus behind him when the Motokazi supercross racers kick off racing at the annual county fair in St. Lawrence Township northeast of Belle Plaine. The Motokazi supercross racing is one of the first big events in the grandstand during the county fair’s five-day run (July 23-27). The two racers expect a nearly-packed grandstand with more than twice the fans they typically see on race nights. They also plan to race at the Carver County Fairgrounds in Waconia (Thursday, Aug. 7, 7 Cameron and Marcus Klehr expect to be racing their motorp.m.). cycles in the grandstand tonight (July 23, 7 p.m.) in the openThe sons of Mark Klehr and ing day of activities at the Scott County Fair. The fair begins County Fair its five-day run today and wraps up Sunday afternoon (July 27). (continued on page 3)

City Council Won’t Allow Former Bake Shop to Become Apartments by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine City Council Monday night unanimously denied a request by builder Matthew Kes for a conditional use permit to allow the conversion of the former Bake Shop building at 137 North Meridian Street downtown into two onebedroom apartments. The planning commission had recommended denial after hearing from several business owners, as well as Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kelly Melo, who explained that business owners are opposed to converting the building into a multi-family dwelling. None of those individuals were present at Monday’s council meeting but their opposition was documented. Included were Deb Koepp of Deb’s Embroidery Business, Jim Steffen of Steffen’s Hardware and Josh Selbrade of Colborn’s, the latter of whom is president of the chamber of commerce. Christine Panning, owner of Andy’s Bar and Grill, voiced opposition directly to the council Monday, saying that residential units on the main floor

of a downtown building is not fitting for a commercial district. Most of the council agreed that it would be easier to approve apartments in downtown as second-floor accessory uses. The former Bake Shop building has only one floor. Another concern, among others, was that the site has no offstreet parking. The building, which is currently owned by the State Bank of Belle Plaine, served as a bakery for a number of different business owners through the decades, the most recent being The Bake Shop, which was operated by Mark and Jami Kruschke before they closed it two years ago. Kes, a longtime resident of Belle Plaine, told the council that he’s “not trying to get rich” by constructing apartments in the building, it’s just that there are so many vacant buildings in downtown and elsewhere in the city, none of which are drawing much interest on the market. “I can’t see anyone else buying that building and opening a

business,” Kes said. “I’d like to see something go in there. It’s kind of sad to drive in downtown and see all the closed storefronts.” Council Member Paul Chard agreed that it would be difficult to make the aged and landlocked building compatatble for many other uses. “What could be done or spent to make this property more marketable – I don’t know,” Chard said. “I’m not for apartments on the main level of any building downtown,” said Council Member Gary Trost, adding that he thinks the business climate downtown will improve when Belle Plaine gets a second overpass/interchange built on Highway 169. Following further discussion, it was the main-level location of the apartments and the lack of parking that led to Kes’ request being denied. In other business Monday night, the council tabled a re-

Bar-B-Q Days Sales Soar; Bull Run Experiences a First Some free air conditioning from Mother Nature on Friday and Saturday before Sunday’s typical July temps helped lead to increased Bar-B-Q Days sales across the board during this past weekend’s 56th annual event. Saturday morning’s cloudy, cool weather made for ideal running conditions and teenager and Pizza Plus employee Tess Misgen made the most of it as she became the first female to ever take “overall” first place in the Bar-B-Q Days Bull Run (see Bull Run results below). The Beef Stand had total sales of $51,598.49, which was some $8,000 more than last year ($43,549.21). Sandwiches cost $3.50 apiece, the same as in recent years. The Beer Garden experienced far more sales as well – $69,411.05 compared to $57,436.55 and nearly $20,000 more than three years ago. Carnival ride sales also boomed, up almost $10,000 over last year – $64,993.50 compared to $55,604.00. The cost of ride tickets was slightly more this year than in 2013. The above totals for this year are preliminary gross sales and do not yet have all of the expenses calculated to determine profits.

Hannah Preusser is New Miss Belle Plaine Eighteen hours after receiving their crowns, Belle Plaine’s new royal foursome were en route to Mall of America in Bloomington Monday morning to begin shopping for their “formal attire” for the coming year. In the car were new Miss Belle Plaine Hannah Preusser, First Princess Kaylee Shields, Second Princess Rylee Pumper and Miss Congeniality Kylee Pass. Shortly before 5 p.m. the preceding day, a stunned Preusser was overwhelmed when she addressed the audience seconds after being crowned by retiring Miss Belle Plaine Amara Meyer. “All that’s going through

my mind right now is wow!” Preusser said. Preusser is the daughter of Marty and Karen Preusser, Shields is the daughter of Kerry Shields and Brody Hennen, Pumper if the daughter of Joe and Kelly Pumper, and Pass is the daughter of Renee LeMieux and Greg Pass. Like the girl (Meyer) who crowned her Sunday, Preusser has been working as a nanny this summer. This weekend she leaves for St. John’s University in Collegeville to attend the

She said she’s the one who physically found it but he said he’s the one who told her where to look – she being Madison Hartmann, he being her cousin Jake Hartmann and it being the 2014 Bar-Q-Days Medallion. Madison found the coin a few hours after the publishing of the third clue last Tuesday evening (July 15) lodged in the ground next to a small post along West Park Street behind the Tiger Park baseball field scoreboard and former football press box. Madison’s father, Tony Hartmann, has had a role in finding the coin three times, the last being in 2005 when he was joined by Jeff Miller in finding it. In 2011, Randy Hartmann, Madison’s cousin, found it. Her grandpa Bob found the coin The Bar-B-Q Days carnival had its usual assortment of rides this past weekend. B.P.’s Racing Klehr Brothers Will Kick off the County Fair in Style Angie Schneider, Cameron and Marcus race every other weekend at the Scott County Fairgrounds. The Klehr brothers are among the top racers in Motokazi’s points standings for the 450c class, Cameron in second place just 29 points ahead of little brother Marcus. They both ride motorcycles powered by 250 cc motors. Cameron prefers a four stroke and Marcus the two-stroke model with its higher pitch. “The difference is how you ride them,” Marcus said. “I’m better in the corers than Cameron, but he seems to get away from me in the straightaways and the jumps.” Whether he’s coming out of a corner or landing a jump from as high as 30 feet in the air, Marcus enjoys flashing a little more style than his older brother when he’s on the track. But the senior-to-be at Belle Plaine Junior-Senior High School knows the wisdom of following his older, more experienced brother’s path into and out of a corner. “I always want to hear that two-stroke motor behind me,” Cameron said. Cameron, 19, is in his second season racing competitively at the fairgrounds. Marcus, 17, is a first-year racer. The two brothers have each been riding for about seven years on the family dairy farm along County Road 64 in Belle Plaine Township. The younger Klehr lacks no confidence. He says finishing ahead of Cameron is not a matter of if it happens, but rather when Marcus finally beats his brother. The elder brother shakes his head and laughs at little brother’s swagger. “No way,” Cameron said. “If he did, I’d want to load up, make up some excuse about what went wrong, and go home.” Neither Klehr has won a heat race or main event yet. Cameron has claimed a pair of second-place finished this season, one in a heat race and the other in the main event. Marcus has a handful of third-place finishes to his credit. Sibling rivalry aside, the two worry about each other when they’re on the track almost as much as their mother and father worry about them. The boys have given their parents plenty to worry about. Last August in New Ulm, at the Brown County Fairgrounds, Cameron overshot the landing of the third jump in a series of three consecutive jumps. He crashed into a concrete barricade and broke both ankles. Earlier this spring, while riding on the farm, Marcus crashed and fractured a collarbone. Cameron wasn’t about to let broken ankles keep him off a motorcycle. When his father was out milking, he’d be out riding. When he heard the pump in the milk house shut down, Cameron knew it was time to get back to the house. Cameron’s crash did little to convince his mom to allow her youngest to start racing competitively. But Marcus knew his mom’s opposition to him racing was wearing down when she got him protective racing gear for Christmas, but then told him that didn’t necessarily mean he could start racing with his Cameron. Schneider claimed that the safety equipment was only to keep him from getting hurt and the broken collarbone occurred when he wasn’t wearing the gear she bought him. “We have way more experience on tough terrain out here,” Cameron said. “A lot of those other riders are used to the soft tracks.”

Miracle of Birth

Each year, the Scott County Ag. Society and fair board try to offer new attractions at the county fair. This year’s newest attraction is a popular spin-off from the Minnesota State Fair. The Miracle of Birth Center will be located in the dairy barn. It will give county fair visitors a chance to see a variety of animals being born or just after

birth during the county fair’s five-day run. The display will include dairy and beef cows, sheep and chickens. The dairy barn is open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. If none of the animals on display are in the birthing process, video screens will show the birth of other animals and volunteers will be on hand to answer questions about animals being born. A veterinarian will also be present. The Miracle of Birth Center at the county fair is the brainchild of Ken Glisczinski of Belle Plaine Township and Norm Pint, the fair’s new general manager. Glisczinski noted the success the Miracle of Birth Center enjoys at the Minnesota State Fair – with may thousands of people visiting it each year since its inception. Pint stressed the importance of the county fair maintaining its agricultural roots and using the display to teach about birthing of farm animals.

Justin Hauge, owner of Brookside Property Service in Savage, along with Manager Tom Pauquette made sure the trickle watering system keeping the plants at the county fair’s gazebo looking nice was working properly. The system delivers about one gallon of water per hour to each hanging flower basket, assuring a good looking stage area during events at the gazebo through the county fair’s five days (July 23-27).

Farmers Market Corner The Belle Plaine Farmers Market is really picking up. More vendors are coming every week and the produce is in abundance. Come to Court Square Park and check us out. If you’re shopping this week, expect to find cucumbers, broccoli, green beans, potatoes, kohlrabi, zucchini, lettuce, carrots and more. Fresh vegetables are perfect raw, grilled or however you want to do it. They have loads of great nutrition and taste great, too. She also cooks up different plates, so be sure to stop and see what she’s making this week. If you are like most people, this summer is getting away from you quickly. Your guidance for your young readers will be vital in the weeks ahead to help them get the most out of their summer reading program. Set some goals. Give them some challenges. Help them have a summer of achievement. We will help you as much as we can. The summer reading program contains the following events in the coming days. If you need more information please call or stop in at the library. It is helpful to be sure that you and your young reader got the information correct. Our summer version of the Friends of the Library book sale started on Tuesday, July 22 at 5 p.m. with volunteers helping set up the book sale. The Book Sale continues on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday during library hours. Free will donations are accepted. Money will go towards a mural that we would like to paint on the wall over in the juvenile area. Be sure to come in and explore for treasure. BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA

Thirty Years Ago This Week

Letter to the Editor

was operating struck a stump and turned over on him. Another drowning occurred in the Minnesota River. Russell Fraiser, 26, of Henderson, who was alone, had gone to the river to swim. Ralph Whalin, 35, the Le Sueur salesman who was badly injured in a car-truck collision, died at the Heron Lake hospital from his injuries. Belle Plaine and Jordan continued in a neck-and-neck race for the MRL Northern Division supremacy. The two clubs won both of their contests that week and remained in a first-place tie.

90 Years Ago (1924)

Members of the water ballet for the 1984 Bar-B-Q Days Pool Show were lifeguards Ann Devine, Mary Devine, Margie Schmit, Mary Leonard, Sharon Meger and Annette Schmit. Rain teased the 26th annual Belle Plaine Bar-B-Q Days, but except for just a few brief sprinkles Saturday afternoon, the weather was fine, if you liked it hot. Temperatures reached 90 degrees Saturday afternoon for the parade and were about five degrees warmer Sunday afternoon. The warm weather, coupled with diminished shade in the park due to Dutch Elm disease, cut attendance slightly Sunday afternoon, but overall it was another jam-packed successful celebration with very few problems and police cracked down on underage beer drinking. Heidi Harsh was crowned Miss Belle Plaine by retiring Queen Joann Koenig. Ann Manthe was crowned first princess, Romi Schneider second princess and Ann Manthe Miss Congeniality. Marvin Denzer of Montgomery won the 10K Bull Run and Mike Fahey of Carver won the two-mile race. Steven Busch, 23, of St. Benedict, was killed about 11 p.m. that Sunday when the motorcycle he was driving left Union Hill Boulevard and crashed into a pond near the Dale Stender farm three miles east of Belle Plaine. It was learned that David Mills, formerly of Belle Plaine, drowned while camping in the mountains just outside of Denver. His vehicle hit a washout in the road and plunged into a river. The Mills family resided in Belle Plaine from 1962 to 1968 while David’s father Dale worked at Midland Glass. A group of six Jordan residents, led by former Mayor Gail Andersen, charged Scott County officials were improperly dealing with children who were involved in the countywide sexual abuse ring. Andersen’s charges were made in a twopage statement and accepted without comment by the county board. The charges, in part, stated: “After three months of careful observation about what is going on in the Jordan area, I find that our county officials are doing opposite of what the law says. They are doing everything possible to breakup families, rather than preserve family ties.” Christine Chadwick was crowned Miss Henderson during that community’s Mosquito Days celebration. The Scott County Fair would begin its four-day run in 1984 that coming Thursday. One of the new events that year would be an amateur talent contest. Saturday at the Children’s Barnyard stage. The ever-popular demolition derby would be the highlight of the grandstand events, taking place on Saturday night. There would be a horse show everyday, which meant a lot of Belle Plaine participation. The National High School Ro-

Hog prices took a spurt. They reached a top high of $10.65 at South St. Paul, which was the highest in three years. The local electric light and power company was engaged in extending its line to Blakeley Village. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Witt were back from New Ulm for a call on old neighbors. For many years Mr. Witt engaged in the blacksmith business here, and which he followed at New Ulm after moving there until retirement. Upon his appointment as postmaster, F.E. Logelin resigned his position as borough clerk, and the council named J.J. Rendle to be clerk. Helen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Mangan, left for Oakland, Calif., to attend college. Her uncle, M.C. McCarthy of Beach, N.D., accompanied her. John Flynn arrived back at his home in Faxon after spending a year with D.H. Flynn and family in Los Angeles. Highway Commissioner Babcock was in town and stated a change in the highway would be made here, the new route turning south at the Main-Meridian street intersection to the foot of the hill and then westward by the Oldenburg farm. The change was being made to get a better grade on the Devine hill. The state attorney general ruled that the disputed school board election in Belle Plaine would have to be decided in the district court since the local board had certified as elected names on the “unofficial” ballot. For the second time in two years, fire of unknown origin destroyed the large stock barn on the William Dietz farm in Le Sueur County. The second fire meant a loss of $20,000 with only $9,000 insurance. A couple of thieves flashing a star and claiming to be U.S. marshals dropped in on a halfdozen Carver County villages and hauled away the slot machines they could find. Samuel Gabbert, one-time resident of Tyrone Township, died at his home in Raymond at age 77. Members of the Kessler, Lieske, Mueller and Koepp families attended the funeral. The gasoline price war continued and prices dropped to 14 cents a gallon. John Donahue, aged resident of St. Thomas, died in a St. Paul hospital and his remains were brought to his native parish for burial. Howard Pierson, 17, was at the farm of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Pierson, in Laketown Township, standing in the doorway of the barn during a storm, and was killed instantly by a bolt of lighting. He was a member of the Chaska basketball team.

Dear Editor, On behalf of the Relay For Life of Scott County Planning Committee, we would like to acknowledge all those who helped to make this year's 17th annual "Colors of Hope" event so successful. Whether you participated on a team, volunteered or made a donation, we appreciate your commitment to Relay and the fight against cancer. On July 11, 35 teams gathered at Shakopee West Junior High –Vaughan Field to raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Our Relay raised over $116,000.00 for patient services, education, research and advocacy. Despite the rain that came down until Noon, our event was still able to be held outside! It was a beautiful afternoon and evening, the glowing luminaries around the track were a glorious site! Everyone enjoyed a beautiful night and celebration – remembering those lost and

honoring our Survivors! There were many committee members and other volunteers who rallied together to get this event put together in 4 hours or less! Last year, we cleaned up in record time and this year we set up in record time, it is gratifying to know that we can count on our community to come together and help when needed! We came together as family, friends, neighbors and coworkers to Celebrate, Remember & Fight Back. We extend an invitation to all to come back again next year - Together We Can Find a Cure and Finish the Fight! The ACS Relay For Life is about being a community that takes up the fight. Let's keep up the great work; and make this Cancer’s Last Century - we are making a difference in the fight against cancer! Karen Kreuser, Event Chair Brenda Stocker, Publicity Chair

St. Thomas

Historic Building at St. Thomas Demolished

Loni Graham, correspondent The biggest news in St. Thomas this week, this month, even this year is‌ The old Coleman/ O’Connell store building adorns our Main Street no more. The 2-story building, built by John Ronan and sold to John Coleman, once a post office and general store on the first floor and a dance hall upstairs on the second floor, was leveled by Aufderhar Construction this week. From the home of James and Agnes Brown O’Connell and their family Tom, Mary Ellen and Dick, to O’Connell Oil, Regan’s, then finally “Kay’s Place.â€? The building also carried a bit of Minnesota state history as the birthplace of Nick Coleman, Sr., one time Senate Majority Leader and father of St Paul Mayor Chris Coleman, was born upstairs before the O’Connell’s lived in the building. James O’Connell took over the business from his father, Dave O’Connell, who farmed south of St. Thomas and bought the building in 1914 from Dave Coleman. Dave was the son of the first general store operator in St. Thomas, John Coleman, who came to Minnesota in 1855 and set up shop. James J. O’Connell bought the place in 1938 and sold general merchandise, hardware and gas at the pump in front. That same year, James J. O’Connell started distributing bulk gas and fuel oil and while James built the oil business, Aggie ran the store with the help of Tom, Mary Ellen and Dick. They got to know folks that frequented the store. The experience taught them much; including math skills, local history, and good social skills. Groceries like fresh milk, eggs, bread, and a place to socialize were provided. Aggie always wore a dress and an apron and had something cooking or baking in the back kitchen. Folks would stop and have a beer and J. J. O’Connell’s set up license allowed them to bring their own liquor and add it to the mixes at the bar. The place was open 7 days a week, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tom married Sharon in 1957, Mary Ellen married Dean. In 1960, Aggie experi-

enced a fatal heart attack behind the counter, there at the bottom of the stairs that ran the width of the building in the rear of the store. Her death rocked St. Thomas. Everybody knew and loved Aggie. In 1961, O’Connell Oil was formed. Tom and Dick took over, built an office building west of the store, they delivered fuel, fertilizer and LP gas. James and son Dick lived upstairs for a while, then James remarried and Dick married Carol Jean. Irish to the core and a local farmer, Jimmy Regan, ran the store through the 70’s. Jimmy, St. Thomas born and raised with wit, humor and non-stop teasing, knew everyone in the country, opened up at 8 a.m. and closed at 11 p.m., until he passed away in 1979. Mary Kay Sullivan Halloran took over managing the store with the help of her husband Donnie. Once again, customers could smell meals cooking in slow cookers or the oven in the back. Kay was a bigger than life character, a real no nonsense lady. She loved fun, had a big heart and a little dog. St. Thomas could not have gotten any more Irish, but Kay decorated with shamrocks and leprechauns, with Kay it became a party place. There are many Kay’s Place stories out there. When she passed away in January of 1995, the store was closed, leaving a big void on the St. Thomas social scene for many years‌ and many Kay’s Place stories. Our St. Thomas Church is the heart of our St. Thomas community, and this store was located mighty close. With everything from electrical problems to the need of a proper septic system and being too close to the road, the store became “too much of a hassle to continue especially with a shrinking customer base and a full-fledged business on the side.â€? The lower slats of the hardwood floor curve down in the middle of the floor, probably from too much dancing and jiggin’.â€? If those walls could have talked‌they witnessed birth, death, tears, dancing, singing, family love and a few customer arguments, to be sure.

Father James Burns will say Mass at St Thomas on Saturday, July 26, at 4 p.m. The schedule for Masses at St. Anne’s with Father George officiating is Saturdays at 5:15 p.m., and Sundays 8 and 10:30 a.m. Oops, it was Theresa Schumacher Krenik who attended the St. Thomas Ladies Luncheon at the Fishtail with her sister, Mary Sheriden two weeks ago. The O’Connell/ Burns Reunion is Saturday and is happening before mass.

Lonsdale Man Killed in Crash Joseph F. Simek, 55, of Lonsdale, was killed Friday night in a motorcycle accident in Wabasha County. According to the State Patrol, Simek was traveling east on Highway 60 at about 8:45 p.m. when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed. The State Patrol said no alcohol was detected and Simek was wearing a helmet.

Aug. 18. *Unanimously appointed Wanda Savage as the video recording operator at council meetings. Staff reported that effective Sept. 1, Zack Schoenecker will no longer be able to serve the position. Savage will begin training with Schoenecker during the August council meetings. *Unanimously approved a large assembly permit request by the Belle Plaine Baseball Association for the state amateur baseball tournament that will take place weekends from mid-August through Labor Day. Games will be played at Tiger Park in Belle Plaine and the Mini-Met in Jordan. *Voted 3-1 to approve a large assembly permit request by Belle Plaine Festival and Events for the Culpepper and Merriweather Circus that will take place Friday, Aug. 1 behind the Cambria building south of Highway 169. Cambria said it will make its parking lot available to circus patrons. Council Member Cary Coop cast the only no vote. *Unanimously approved pay request No. 1 by Pearson Brothers for $59,259 for the 2014 seal coat project. The next regular meeting of the Belle Plaine City Council is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 4 in the City Hall building at 218 North Meridian Street downtown.

contract with Pipe Services to clean and televise approximately 7,500 feet of sanitary sewer lines at a cost of $7,125. The public works committee had worked on identifying future street reconstruction and utility projects to get an idea on the infrastructure condition, and determined that the sanitary sewer lines on a couple of street segments should be further investigated. After the televising is complete, the committee will use the findings and other criteria to determine what projects should be done before others. *Unanimously authorized the conveyance of a small property within the city. Staff reported that the parcel, which has a market value of $1,200, became available to the city through tax forfeiture. “Being that the north sanitary sewer interceptor runs directly through the property, staff feels that it is appropriate to acquire the property, reported Community Development Director Chelsea Alger. “There would be no intention of developing the parcel in the future due to several development constraints. The purpose of acquisition is merely to preserve land surrounding the utility. *For the second time in a month, the council tabled a public hearing on a request by Shawn Larson for a variance to construct a detached garage that would exceed height, square footage and maximum garage door height at 1013 Provence Lane. If approved, Larson plans to purchase the lot where the new garage would be built and combine it to his existing parcel. Monday’s latest tabling was requested by Larson, who wants more time to work through the details of his variance request. The matter will be brought back to the council for the continuing of the hearing on

quest by Public Works Superintendent Al Fahey to replace the heating and cooling system in the police department building at a cost of $19,807. Fahey said the system, which is the original one from when the building was built decades ago, is failing and no longer repairable. He said he knew this job was going to have to be done and has budgeting for it. Lange Plumbing and Heating of Belle Plaine submitted the quote to do the work. But because of the cost of the job, it was the consensus of the council to hold off on okaying the project until at least one or two other potential contractors can bid for the work. *Unanimously authorized the removal of the former football press box at the Tiger Park baseball complex. Public Works Superintendent Al Fahey reported that the facility has not been used as a press box since the construction of the new football complex years ago near Oak Crest Elementary School. The building was used by community services for storage. Fahey reported that the structure, if used in the future, would need a new roof, siding and soffits. It was determined by the public works committee that since community services is no longer storing items in the structure, that it be removed. The removal will be done by public works personnel and the cost to relocate the existing electrical work to the new scoreboard will be $1,332. That work will be done by Gregory Electric of Belle Plaine. “Staff will dismantle the wood portion and salvage what is good, then remove the concrete and restore the boulevard to grass, Fahey stated. *Unanimously approved a

Legal Notices

(continued from previous page) **Attention Faxon Township Property Tax Payers** Notice of Change to Estimated Market Values For 2014 Assessment (2015 Payable) For Property Tax Purposes By order of the Minnesota Department of Revenue Property Tax Division – The Commissioner of Revenue has ordered State Board Changes directing the Sibley County Assessor to increase the value of residential structures 5% in the Township of Faxon, which is to be applied to the 2014 Assessment estimated market values. This is an order of the State Board of Equalization and cannot be appealed to the Minnesota Tax Court. Again, this affects only residential properties with structures in the Township of Faxon. As a result, the values (for property tax purposes only) listed on the ‘Valuation Notices’ mailed to you this past spring are no longer accurate. This value will NOT match the value that has been ordered to be placed on these properties. The 5% increase to residential structures will be reflected in the new value that will appear on the ‘Truth in Taxation’ statements mailed to you this fall for taxes payable in 2015. You will not receive a new Valuation Notice. The Sibley County Assessor’s Office was not in agreement of this increase to values, but has been ordered to do so pursuant to Minnesota Statutes Section 273.061 subd 9(f). If you have any questions (ex. Did this affect my property? What is my new value?) please contact the Sibley County Assessor’s Office at (507) 237-4078 or send an email to assessor1@co.sibley. mn.us Published in the Belle Plaine Herald on Wednesdays, July 16 and 23, 2014.

Belle Plaine 14U softball team dominated its state tournament tier this past weekend in Rosemount. The Tigers competed against 19 other teams from around the state. They won the tournament with a record of 6-0. The team had a big advantage having two great pitchers – Emma Luskey and Jessica Brueggemeier. Lilly Olson was a great compliment to them as the catcher. She would get runners out at home as well as those trying to steal second by launching the ball to second baseman Randi Fiskewold. Third baseman Taylor Mullen and shortstop Hailey Witt were not afraid of getting dirty diving for the balls hit down the third base line and to the left infield. They both connected with Hannah Witt playing first base for several outs. Even when the balls made it to the green, Gabrielle VonBank, Jessica Prader, Olivia Olson, Siri Kuhn and Teresa Wentworth played great defense in the outfield. All the players were swinging the bats hard to get their teammates across home plate. The coaches are Troy Witt, Tim Luskey and Mike Wentworth. Standing, from left, are Jessica Prader, Hailey Witt, Olivia Olson, Taylor Mullen, Gabrielle VonBank, Teresa Wentworth, Emma Luskey, Randi Fiskewold, Lilly Olson and Jessica Brueggemeier. Kneeling are Hannah Witt and Siri Kuhn.

Tigers Eye No. 2 Seed in Playoffs by Brett Kruschke and Matt Schultz The town Tigers blew a ninthinning lead to lose 7-6 in walkoff fashion at Jordan on Thursday, and a pair of follow-up wins for the Brewers this past weekend clinched them the RVL Central’s No. 1 seed for the Region 6C playoffs. Jordan improved to 11-0 in league play, while 7-3 Belle Plaine still holds a commanding edge for the division’s No. 2 seed. Chanhassen and Henderson are 5-6, while Le Sueur is 4-6. Tuesday night’s home game against Waconia was cancelled by the visitors due to a scheduling snafu, not realizing their playoffs began this week. The Tigers will visit Le Sueur 7:30 p.m. Thursday and end the regular-season at 4 p.m. Sunday in Fairfax. Friday will be Belle Plaine’s final regular-season home game and Fan Appreciation Night against the Henderson Tigers. First pitch is at 7:30 p.m. and a number of prizes will be given away to fans in attendance. This is the second year of the River Valley League having its own region (6C) playoffs, and therefore, the previously-held divisional playoffs are no longer needed. Elimination games will be played next Wednesday (July 30) between the Nos. 4 and 5 seeds from each divi-

Jordan 7, Tigers 6 The Tiger Train traveled to Jordan in a match-up of the RVL Central’s top two teams – and also a Bar-B-Q Days kickoff – on a perfect night for baseball. The Brewers nabbed one in the first and the score remained that way until the fourth, when Belle Plaine scored four times to take the lead. In the bottom half of the inning, Jordan answered with four runs off starter August Farruggia, thanks to a few walks and some poor defense. Zac Dahlke came in and got the Tigers out of a basesloaded, one-out jam, yielding one run. Belle Plaine scored two runs in the fifth to retake the lead and remained ahead by one until the bottom of the ninth. Dan Huber blanked the Brewers from the fifth through eighth innings, and ace Ryan Diers was summoned for the final three outs in the ninth. Unfortunately, Diers didn’t have his usual good stuff. The inning started with a single, and after an infield error, a walk loaded the bases. Jordan’s

Mitch Ries then delivered a two-RBI single to right field for the walk-off winner, with nary an out recorded. The Tigers had 11 hits with Jake Fiedler, Brad Lawson and Diers recording two apiece. Diers also hit his second home run of the season, a two-run shot. 2014 Town Tigers Schedule May 2 vs. St. Ben. summer,” a spokesman for the team explained, in reference to the tournament. Chances are good, with a first-place trophy now in hand, they’ll be even more excited to come back and defend their title. To no one’s surprise, the women’s team from Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) Academy, Oak Grove, emerged as the victor above the other eight teams, though it should be noted that the Mighty Mader ladies came in second. The IHM women have had no shortage of wins in past years and now collectively have more trophies than they likely know what to do with. Apart from the players, there were also plenty of spectators, many of them seeking shelter beneath canopies while warming their hands with closely

cradled brats, hot dogs and cups of coffee. When asked what his favorite part of the tournament was, 4-year-old Slade Dvorak commented that he’s not in volleyball yet, but that he had helped to set things up for the tournament. From outward appearances, a melting orange freeze-pop also appeared to be a major highlight for him. When approached for his thoughts on how the day had gone, tournament coordinator Ted Gunderson said, “It went very well, overall. The teams played hard, and they played fast. Even with the rain, we finished up within half an hour of the time we had estimated.” Anyone who is interested in participating in next year’s tournament is encouraged to contact Holy Family Academy.

She plans to study nursing after graduating from high school next June. Formal attire and everyday clothes won’t be the only things Preusser will be wearing this coming year. She will be donning tennis shoes, trunks and a jersey as a member of the varsity girls’ basketball team, which she played varsity for last year. She is also a member of the varsity girls’ golf team, as well as

New Miss Belle Plaine Hannah Preusser a participant in the school’s Pep and Tiger Target clubs. She’s also a member of the National Honor Society. Preusser said she was “a little shocked” at first about becoming Miss Belle Plaine, but while

on the way to MOA Monday morning said she’s “looking forward” to the coming year. The 2014 royal court will ride in their first parade this weekend at Kolacky Days in Montgomery.

The Prior Lake High School marching band, a Bar-B-Q Days Parade regular, is pictured crossing through the main downtown intersection Saturday afternoon.

The weekend crowds in the Beer Garden enjoyed good weather while sipping beverages or simply people watching.

Games of Jenga were played at this year’s Bar-B-Q Days. During the game, players take turns removing one block at a time from a tower constructed of 54 blocks. Each block removed is then balanced on top of the tower, creating a progressively taller but less stable structure. Eventually, as pictured above, the tower will collapse.

Bob and Maureen Kahle were grand marshals of the parade.
