Margaret McCue Morrison Luke Hennen Takes Over Speaks at Memorial Day Program as Scott County’s New Sheriff by Dan Ruud A wet, dry, wet and dry again weekend stayed dry for Monday’s Memorial Day Program at Veterans Park in Belle Plaine, where a good turnout of people basked in sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70s. Retired U.S. Army Reserves Lt. Col. Margaret McCue Morrison was the guest speaker. She is the daughter of Ed Morrison and Cora Ellen McCue Morrison and is a 1975 graduate of Belle Plaine High School. Morrison received her commission as a second lieutenant with the Minnesota Military Academy, Camp Ripley, in June 1989. Presenting her with the honor was fellow Belle Plaineite, retired Gen. Roger Delgehausen, who introduced Morrison to the audience Monday. “I am very honored to be speaking with you today on such an important occasion,” Morrison said. “We are here to honor our service members and to remember the sacrifices they made for duty, honor, country. We remember and reflect on our heroes, appreciate their achievements, their courage, their dedication, and to say thank you. “The service members we honor today came from all walks of life and they shared fundamental qualities,” Morrison continued. “They possessed courage, pride, determination, selfless service, integrity and dedication to duty – all the qualities needed to serve a cause larger than one’s self. We recall the ordinary men and women of Belle Plaine and realize they are not ordinary, but extraordinary men and women.” Morrison then spoke about her father, who served during World War II. “My dad, PFC Morrison, served for a total of three years and nine months (in World War II). He was not exactly happy to leave his family farm near

St. John’s Lutheran Church in Faxon Township, but like other young men and women, he stepped up and proudly served our community, our state and our country. He was truly a lifetime inspiration for me. I have his World War II Army trunk (foot locker) with uniform, unit badges, shaving kit, map case and other military service items.” Morrison then shifted her speech to her own military experiences, including her time with the 329th Postal Company as a platoon leader, executive officer and commander. “We trained overseas in Seoul, Camp Casey, Camp Humphreys and Camp Red Cloud, Korea. I was fortunate to be able to visit the DMZ (demilitarized zone). My goodness, what a surreal experience. The

Sundblad Murder Trial to Extend into July, Maybe Longer Although Joshua Sundblad’s defense attorney wrapped up his case last Tuesday (May 24), a verdict in the trial of the Belle Plaine man who allegedly murdered his infant son won’t likely be issued until later this summer. Michael McDonald, Sundblad’s attorney, said Judge Christian Wilton’s schedule for submitting written closing arguments, rebuttal and a verdict will take the case well into July, possibly longer. Prosecutors have until July 7 to submit their closing arguments. McDonald has until July 11. Prosecutors will have until July 18 to submit written rebuttal of McDonald’s closing argument. Wilton will then issue his verdict some time after that. “Who knows how long that

will take,” McDonald said. Sundblad, 26, is charged with first-degree murder of his infant son while allegedly maintaining a pattern of child abuse, plus first- and third-degree assault. The child died in May of 2014. Sundblad was initially charged with third-degree murder in the baby’s death in September of 2014. Those charges were increased to first-degree murder following a grand jury indictment last fall. The trial began May 10. Sundblad waived his right to a jury trial, leaving the decision on his innocence or guilt with Wilton. Unable to post the cash $500,000 bail/bond, Sundblad has been in the Scott County Jail since September of 2014.

Swimming Pool Kickoff Party Next Thursday The Belle Plaine Community Swimming Pool will hold a kickoff party on Thursday, June 9 from 5-7 p.m. The pool will open for the season June 10.

Activities for the kickoff party will include an inflatable water slide, a slip-n-slide, treats and more. The pool itself will not be open during this event. The public is invited to attend.

I was lucky enough to visit the Ray Kaserne Barracks in Friedberg, where Elvis Presley was stationed from October 1958 to March 1960. While in Germany, we visited Dachau (prison camp), where there were 31,591 reported deaths during 1935 to 1945.” At the start of her speech, Morrison, who was the emcee at this year’s St. Patrick’s festivities in Belle Plaine, called two young boys to the podium – brothers Jack and Sean Townsend – to present both of them with an Army T-shirt. She explained how impressed she was with how the two of them conducted themselves during a St. Patrick’s planning meeting this past winter, and how they were studying state capitals while the adults planned the St. Patrick’s events. In 2011, Morrison assumed command of the 1106th Mobilization Support Battalion at Fort Eustis, Vir., to which she would fly to on a monthly basis. Morrison, who retired from the U.S. Army Reserve last July 31, has three children – Donna Bergman of Seattle, Wash., Andrew Dahlberg of Minneapolis and Shannon Dahlberg of Wilmington, N.C. Morrison is a registered nurse in nephrology with HealthPartners Clinic in St. Paul. Monday’s program began with the introduction by Roger Delgehausen, which was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem, the latter of which was sung by Belle Plaine High School students Schuyler Sterk, Neil Bigaouette, Lauren Murphy and Patrick Selly. The Invocation was provided by Rev. Sarah Timian of St. John Lutheran Church. Presenting Symbolic Tributes were Belle Plaine Veterans Club Senior Vice President Larry Ruehling, VFW Auxilia-

After completing the oath of office Friday morning, new Scott County Sheriff Luke Hennen looked over toward his family in the audience and smiled. The Jordan native had plenty to feel good about. Hennen is Scott County’s 19th sheriff. He replaces Kevin Studnicka, who retired midterm. Hennen will have nearly two years to try the job on for size before deciding if he wants to seek elected office in 2018. Hennen thanked his wife, Deborah, daughters Audra and Lucille, and family for their support. He also thanked former sheriffs, the Scott County Sheriff’s Office and county commissioners for their backing. “I promise to work hard to earn your trust and respect in this humbling opportunity to serve as your sheriff,” he said. Hennen, 39, was appointed to the office in mid-February. The appointment was effective May 27, the day Studnicka retired. Since his appointment, he graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a master’s degree in public administration. Hennen has also had the opportunity to participate in significant discussions and decisions regarding operations and staffing, he said. He thanked Studnicka for allowing him to have a say in key decisions, like the hiring of analyst Laura Wiger to support the work of deputies and investigators in the field. “I’m going to have to own it,” he said of the decisions he’s helped make since his appointment and promotion from chief deputy. “We talked through decisions. It made the transition a lot easier.” Hennen selected Capt. Adam Pirri as his new chief deputy. A 12-year veteran of the sheriff’s office, Pirri’s background is in emergency management and communications. Hennen figures Pirri’s background will complement his own background in corrections and investigations. The new sheriff plans to take a more public role in policy issues and promoting the work the sheriff’s office performs. He plans to be more active in public organizations like the Scott County Association for

Scott County’s new sheriff, Luke Hennen, took the oath of office from District Court Judge Rex Stacey Friday morning in the county board chambers. Hennen replaces Sheriff Kevin Studnicka who retired mid-term. Leadership and Efficiency (SCALE) – a partnership of the county, cities, school districts and townships -- dealing with issues like housing, transportation and education and their impact on the sheriff’s office. Hennen sees no glaring need for the way Scott County sheriff’s deputies and staff do their

jobs. He said they already do good work. “These people know their jobs very well. If there are any ideas on things we need to change, I’d rather it come from them,”

More Added to List of Candidates for City Offices There will be a primary for the job of Belle Plaine mayor following this past Tuesday’s 11thhour filing by Mark Gerdes. His filing came two weeks after Chris Meyer and incumbent Mike Pingalore filed the first morning of the filing period. Now that there’s at least three candidates, a primary will need to be held on Aug. 9 to narrow the list of candidates to two. As of early Tuesday afternoon, there still weren’t enough candidates to require a primary election for three seats on the city council. However, with several hours still left to file before the 5 p.m. deadline, each one of the available seats were just one candidate shy of a primary. Adding their names this past week were incumbent Henry

Pressley Jr. for a four-year term and Theresa McDaniel for the two-year term. Pressley joined fellow Council Member Cary Coop and newcomers Nickole Shetka and Ben Stier as the candidates for the two-four year seats. If a fifth person was to file, there would need to be a primary to narrow the field to two candidates for each seat. Meanwhile, McDaniel has challenged incumbent Gary Trost for the two-year term on the council. If there were no more late-hour candidates Tuesday, those two will go head-to-head in November. The seat was previously held by Scott Schneider, who moved to Shakopee. Pressley was appointed to fill the void until this year’s election.

Three Longtime Belle Plaine Teachers Calling it a Career Noah, Schultz, Stier to Retire

Teaching has always come naturally to them. It is, after all, their life’s work. But when the summer begins to slip away and fall nears, for the first time in decades, a trio of longtime Belle Plaine School District teachers won’t prepare to return

to school. Lyle Noah, Carol Schultz and Sue Stier have all announced plans to retire next week, at the end of the 2015-16 school year. Cumulatively, they represent about 100 years of teaching experience in the Belle Plaine School District. Noah is No. 2 on the list of years of service, one spot ahead of Schultz. Stier is also among the district’s most

experienced staff.

MPCA Honors B.P., Area Cities for Treatment Plants Wastewater treatment facilities in Belle Plaine and in other area communities are among those honored by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA). Belle Plaine, Cologne, Arlington (which also serves Green Isle), Jordan, Montgomery, New Prague, Norwood Young America, and Rahr Malting (Shakopee) are among the 288 public and privately operated wastewater treatment facilities the MPCA recently recognized for perfect compliance with their permits. Belle Plaine and the other honorees were recognized at the annual wastewater conference

in Brooklyn Park. The recognition lauds the plant operators for meeting state standards for discharge limitations, established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. To be eligible for recognition by the MPCA, facilities must meet the requirements set in their permits. The requirements include accurate monitoring reports submitted on time, consistent compliance with MPCA rules demonstrated through monitoring or surveys, and having MPCA-certified staff. Built in 2002, the Belle Plaine wastewater treatment plant treats about 500,000 gallons each day.

Carver Studying Space Needs Before Village Hall Decision Before deciding how it should proceed with repairs to Village Hall or the wrecking ball, the Carver City Council will have the city’s space needs thoroughly studied. The city council recently OK’d spending $18,250 on a study to determine the long-term space needs of the city and community organizations. The study will take as much as 75 days, the Chaska Herald recently reported. Located at 316 Broadway Street in downtown Carver, Village Hall was closed Feb. 11 after a city building official

discovered a weakened roof. Fearing a potential collapse, the city closed the building and relocated organizations that use the 59-year-old building. The council has been unable to agree on what to do about the building. Estimates for repairing and renovating Village Hall for occupancy range from $226,000 to $300,000. Mayor Mike Webb lauded the study, noting an outsider’s view of the issue will provide the city more balance information and remove personalities from the issue.

It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. A woman is charged with using a fraudulent check to try to fraudulently purchase items from a Belle Plaine grocery store and then allegedly assaulted the store’s staff and manager. Mai Kia Lee of Cottage Grove is charged with using a forged check, a felony, in the attempted purchase of $412.05 worth of items from Coborn’s grocery store in Belle Plaine. She is also charged with ďŹ fth-degree assault for threatening the store’s manager when he and members of the staff tried to delay the purchase until police arrived. Lee is due for a ďŹ rst appearance on the felony and misdemeanor charges in Scott County District Court July 8. The incident dates back to Feb. 28 when Lee, according to the criminal complaint, and another woman tried to purchase $412.05 worth of items (including gift cards) from Coborn’s. The store’s manager was familiar with the pair. He’d received a Coborn’s security alert warning store staffs to be on the lookout for the pair. They had previously used a forged check to buy $1,252.61 worth of merchandise from a Coborn’s in Albertville, Minn. Staff at the Belle Plaine Coborn’s tried to stall the pair, but

Lee, 24, and the woman became irate. They threatened to call police because the Coborn’s staff would not give them back the check drawn from Lake Area Bank and an Iowa driver’s license. The pair left the store without the merchandise. Belle Plaine Police Chief Tom Stolee said the attempt to pass the allegedly bogus check constitutes the theft charge. Police learned the information on the check was stolen. The rightful owner of the checking account, according to the complaint, was unaware the check information had been stolen. The criminal complaint states Lee told the manager he “was going to die. The manager had to jump out of the way as Lee’s vehicle left the store’s parking lot. She was arrested in the days following the incident.

BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA

Thirty Years Ago This Week

1986 Commencement Approximately 80 Belle Plaine High School seniors received their diplomas at the commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 1, 1986. Eighty Belle Plaine High School seniors received their diplomas at that Sunday’s commencement exercises held in the school auditorium. A number of the graduates were presented with awards and scholarships by high school principal Lowell Hoffman. Among them were class valedictorian Todd Hardwick and salutatorian Jeff Read. English foreign exchange student Richard Allen, who was among that year’s graduating class, characterized Belle Plaine as “a very, very intimate place, adding that he enjoyed “excellent hospitality wherever he went. His parents, Harry and Jenny Allen, made the trip from England to be at the graduation ceremony. BPHS teacher and coach Dale Pudlitzke retired at the close of the school year. Fifteen of his 27 years in education were spent in Belle Plaine. The Belle Plaine City Council was working on an amendment to the liquor ordinance that would permit the sale of wine in certain circumstances. Among the conditions would be wine licenses would only be issued to restaurants with a seating capacity of 35 people or more. The city council was also discussing some ways to give senior citizens and indigent citizens a break on their water and sewer bills. The matter came up after Mayor Fran Schuman said the recent hike in water and sewer rates voted by the council was imposing a hardship on elderly citizens and others who were poor. The group of concerned citizens that had been meeting to discuss alcohol and drug abuse by school-age children decided to form a chapter of the Parents Communication Network. The

local organization would be known as the Belle Plaine Area Chapter of the Parents Communication Network. The parent organization was formed in 1982 in Apple Valley. Margaret Ince, age 89, of Belle Plaine, passed away June 2 at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home. Mrs. Ince was born in New Prague and married Peter Ince of Belle Plaine. They owned and operated a jewelry store in Belle Plaine until 1956, when they retired. For the fourth year in a row, Laurie Wolpern of BPHS qualiďŹ ed for the state girls’ track and ďŹ eld meet that would take place June 6-7 at Osseo High School. She exceeded the state standard in the high jump by jumping 5-4 and tied for second place at regions. She also placed third in the 400-meter dash and narrowly missed qualifying for state in that event. The Belle Plaine town baseball team lost three games that week – to Young America 10-8, Cologne 5-2 and Shakopee 13-3. The loss to Young America occurred despite three home runs and six RBI by Jeff Miller.

The newest expansion of Min Valley milk plant brought the capacity of the plant to produce 45,000 pounds of butter per hour, and uid milk capacity to a million pounds a day. Dorothy Fahey, daughter of William Fahey, was married to Merlin Bartels, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bartels, at St. John’s Catholic Church, Sibley County. Roger Hallgren, son of the Ben Hallgrens, graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School. He was headed into military service for his internship. Joanne Daly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M.J. Daly, graduated from the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, receiving a degree of bachelor of science in the ďŹ eld of elementary education. Frank Egan died at the Arlington hospital at the age of 60. Rev. P.J. Haupt, for nearly 40 years pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Belle Plaine, came back to his old congregation to celebrate the golden anniversary of his ordination. Those participating in the Memorial Day Program were:

Justin Riesgraf, Phil Hartman, Jerry Moriarty, Sharon Hughes, Beverly Latzke, Gary Lindquist, Oliver Rucks, John Buszmann, war veterans; Legion and V.F.W. and auxiliaries; and Rev. P.J. O’Connor and Rev. O.F. Herder. Atty. John Fitzgerald of New Prague gave the address. Father Marvin O’Connell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick O’Connell, celebrated his ďŹ rst Solemn High Mass at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Minneapolis. Many attended from St. Thomas, Belle Plaine, Le Sueur and other communities. The Belle Plaine creamery, Commercial Club, FFA and Blakeley creamery sponsored candidates for Dairy Queen at the county Dairy Days Festival. Ruth Laabs, Kathleen Murphy, Phyllis Chard and Edith Kerkow were the candidates. At the Immaculate Conception Church in Rapid City, S.D., took place the marriage of Kathleen Macho, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jos. Macho of Le Center, to Airman Raymond C. Kilduff, son of Mr. and Mrs. C.J. Kilduff of St. Thomas. Miss Loretta Jean Ekstrom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G.A. Ekstrom, Chicago, Ill., was united in marriage to Charles W. Halstead, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Halstead of Blakeley. Inez Hannah Lydia Bellquist, native of West Union, died at the Waconia hospital at the age of 57. The grandchildren of Sven Svenson held a family reunion at the West Union Lutheran Church. It was especially signiďŹ cant to hold such a reunion because it was 100 years ago, in 1856, that Sven Svenson and his wife settled in Minnesota territory, in Carver County. Miss Gertrude Schloegel, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Schloegel of Henderson, and Le Roy Diekmann of New Germany were united in marriage at St. Joseph’s Church in Henderson.

90 Years Ago (1926)

Farmers were scanning skies daily for signs of rain. It continued so extremely dry that on some light soil areas hope of a crop was given up. Belle Plaine had two candidates in that year’s primary election – Dr. D.W. Wilson for representative and H.A. Irwin

for county attorney. Sarah Newell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Newell, completed her course of training as a nurse and graduated with honors. Mr. and Mrs. Art Kloss and family moved from Chaska to make Belle Plaine their home again. J.H. Tonn retired from the farm and moved into town, taking occupancy of the Vinkemeier house that he had bought. Mr. and Mrs. Martin Wherley and son were back from Berthold, N.D., for a visit among their old neighbors in Faxon and Jessenland. Mrs. John Blake, a resident of Belle Plaine for 15 years, died, and the funeral was held from Sacred Heart Church. She was the former Elizabeth Flynn and was born in Assumption. At West Union Church took place the marriage of Amy Katherine Anderson, daughter of the J.A. Andersons, to George Erickson of Isanti. After a wedding trip, the couple established their home on the groom’s farm near Isanti. W.F.H. Winterfeldt took over operation of the elevator at East Henderson, which he had bought. Mrs. James A. Kievel, a former resident of Faxon Township, died at the family home in St. Paul. The marriage of Miss Louise Marie Witt to Harry C. Barten took place at St. John’s Church, Union Hill. The couple established their home on the farm in Belle Plaine Township. During a shingling bee at the Walter Bills farm near Blakeley, the scaffolding broke and three men – Art Muehlenhardt, Paul Woestehoff and August Otto – fell 30 feet to the ground. All three were hurt but none seriously. Mrs. Frank J. Bily, a bride of less than a year, died in New Prague. She was the former Mary Rosival of Belle Plaine Township. High school graduation that year was held on June 4. Making up the class of 12 were: Lester Blume, Evelyn Carr, Viola Dahlke, Mildred Hahn, Adolph Kulisheck, Genevieve Lynch, Clarence Pearson, Clara Peterson, Elma Schmidt, Kathryn Walsch, Marie Weibeler and Fred Wolpern. J.A. Anderson of West Union left on a trip to Philadelphia as a delegate to the Lutheran Synod.

A heavy rainstorm caused ďŹ elds to be washed out and trains to suspend for a day. The track at Sliding Bluff, above Blakeley, was buried under heavy sand. It was the year of the crayon enlargement and canvassers were doing the country on that fad. As the enlargements seldom resembled the party to be “enlarged,â€? there were refusals to pay. One local young woman was told if she didn’t pay, the picture would be hung up in one of the saloons. Gaylord was breaking into the county seat removal contest in Sibley with the claim that Gaylord, rather than Arlington, should have the chance of contesting with Henderson. Mary Ellen Lease of Kansas was making political speeches in Minnesota. She was one of the ďŹ rst women politicians and was considered very “radical.â€?

Session on Transportation Issues Impacting Residents Set for June 9 Families and Individuals Sharing Hope (FISH) will host an information session about transportation “Getting There – Opportunities and Barriers, on Thursday, June 9 at Hope Church in Jordon. During this session, you will learn about what a group of mechanics in Jordan is doing to help those in need to repair their vehicles. There will also be opportunities for partnership and discussion about the recent meeting of area mechanics in Scott County. “There are many challenges that come along with transportation barriers, those barriers can turn into major setbacks like job loss and homelessness if people can’t get back on the road again, according to Bethany Tjornhom, executive director of FISH. “We hope that participants gain a better understanding of the issue so

that they can positively and effectively work together to help create new opportunities for transportation.â€? People who have been helped by local mechanics will also be sharing their own stories regarding the struggle of having to choose between paying their rent or paying for a car repair. SmartLink, which offers multiple types of rides, including transportation speciďŹ cally for people with disabilities — funded under the ADA — and Dial-a-Ride, which serves all residents in Carver and Scott counties will also be giving an update on services. The session is open to the public and free. Thursday, June 9, 9:30-11:00 a.m., Hope Lutheran Church, 201 Hope Avenue, Jordan. Space is limited. RSVPs can be called into 952440-3600 or e-mailed to ďŹ sh@ ďŹ shpartnernetwork.org.

Dahle Says End of Session Displays Clear Path for Legislative Reform by Sen. Kevin Dahle As has been well-reported, the legislative process has some serious aws. When last-minute negotiations keep both legislators and the public in the dark, it’s clear that the transparency and accessibility we value in government is harmed. While I’m pleased with the progress made on some of our work this year, my biggest takeaway over the last two years in particular has been that the Minnesota Legislature needs reform. Working in divided government is difďŹ cult, and often for good reason – it forces legislators to compromise and ďŹ nd areas of agreement despite partisan differences. We were successful in that on both the tax bill and the supplemental budget bill this year. A tax bill was passed with a strong bipartisan majority, and it will provide tax relief for working Minnesotans, including $258 million next year and $544 million in the following two years. An expansion of the working families tax credit joins a student debt tax credit and property tax relief for businesses and farmers in the ďŹ nal bill. The supplemental budget we passed is another example of legislative success in divided government. The bill invests in voluntary pre-K programs, and my bipartisan Teacher Shortage Act was included as well, which will help rural school districts attract and retain quality teachers in shortage areas like math and special education. I’m particularly pleased that $35 million was pledged for both highspeed internet (broadband) in Greater Minnesota, and for addressing economic disparities for Minnesotans of color in all parts of the state. However, the failure to pass a transportation bill, a REAL ID bill and a bonding bill, despite all parties knowing the

great need, clearly shows that the rules we have in place don’t always work. I have faith that the ongoing negotiations were on a path to a compromise – both Speaker Daudt and Majority Leader Bakk have said as much. They simply ran out of time. The Minnesota Constitution is very clear on when the legislature must ďŹ nish its work. We have known the ending date and time for the 2016 session since the constitution was enacted, and have no excuse for not having bills ready in time. High-level, secret negotiations in the last hours of session do an injustice to the constitutional democracy I teach high school students about in my role as a civics teacher. I am a strong supporter of what has become known as the “Fourth Deadlineâ€? idea, sponsored by the bipartisan Purple Caucus, which would put a bright clear line on the calendar. It would force elected ofďŹ cials to give their colleagues, the press and the public enough time to read the bills thoughtfully and come to a responsible conclusion before session ends. This will keep negotiations from spiraling out of control, limit political gamesmanship and dramatically increase the transparency of our political system. I am convinced that we would have had a REAL ID bill and a public works bill if this deadline had been put in place for this session. There are certainly things to celebrate this year, and Minnesota is still on the right track. We need to work together, with both parties, to ensure that we stay there. - Insurance - For Price - For Coverage - At Claim Time

Ask A Trooper by Sgt. Troy Christianson of the Minnesota State Patrol Question: I would like to know if it is legal to have your fog lights on with your headlights at night when it is not foggy out. I have noticed a lot of vehicles with all four lights on while driving at night. These extra two lights do make it much more difficult to see when they are coming at you at night. Answer: Yes, it is legal if the lights are within the proper height and aimed within the legal range. I recommend that fog lights are only used in low visibility settings, as some of them can be hard on the other driver’s eyes. Below is the state statute that cover fog lights. 169.56 AUXILIARY LIGHTS. Subd. 2. Fog light. Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two fog lamps mounted on the front at a height not less than 12 inches nor more than 30 inches above the level

surface upon which the vehicle stands. High-beams simply light up the fog and can make it difficult to see. Fog lights light up the road below the fog. The fog light reflectors are designed to spread the beam wider for a shorter distance. Make sure all of your markers, directionals, parking lights and low/high-beam lights are working. Remember to turn on your headlights in the rain. Use the fog lights only when you have very low visibility, and don’t forget to turn them off when the fog has lifted. Even though it may be legal, it can make visibility to the other drivers difficult. If you have any questions concerning traffic-related laws or issues in Minnesota, send your questions to Sgt. Troy Christianson – Minnesota State Patrol at 2900 48th Street NW, Rochester MN 55901-5848. You can also reach him at, Troy. Christianson@state.mn.us.

Tri-City United’s $18.66 million Bond Issue Fails by 15 Votes Despite an organized information campaign and projected enrollment growth, Tri-City United School District’s request for approval of an $18.66 million bond referendum failed by 15 votes Tuesday (May 24). The vote was 1,042 for the referendum and 1,057 against it. Thirty-one percent of the registered voters as of Tuesday morning participated in the vote. Superintendent Teri Preisler said the district might consider requesting a recount of the results, the Montgomery Messenger recently reported. Had it passed, the bonds would have funded expansion, improvements safety and security upgrades at existing schools in each of the school district’s

communities – Montgomery, Lonsdale and Le Center. Overcrowding at the high school at Montgomery would have been alleviated. The plan also called for the addition of a 700-seat auditorium/classroom at TCU High School. The proposal passed by a solid margin in Montgomery, Kilkenny, Heidelberg and the townships of Kilkenny, Lanesburgh and Montgomery. It passed comfortably in the cities of Lonsdale, and the townships of Erin, Forest, Shieldsville and Wheatland. But the measure failed badly in the cities of Le Center and Cleveland and the townships of Cordova, Derrynane, Elysian, Lexington and Sharon.

Jordan, Mn/DOT at Odds Over Hwy. 282Creek Lane Crossing Jordan city councilors and the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) have different ideas about how to handle the amount of traffic flowing through the intersection of Highway 282 and Creek Lane. Jordan fancies the idea of a semaphore. Mn/DOT is proposing a roundabout. But Jordan wants Mn/DOT to help fund the semaphore. The state agency hasn’t yet formally rejected the proposal, the Jordan Independent recently reported, but the sticking point may come down to access to

area businesses along Highway 282, most notably Radermacher’s, Wolf Motors and a bank. If a semaphore is built on Highway 282, east of its intersection with Highway 169, Mn/DOT wants additional turn lanes for access to those businesses. The additional lanes will cost an estimated $75,000 to $150,000. A semaphore will cost between $250,000 and $300,000. A roundabout is expected to cost between $750,000 and $1.25 million. Mn/DOT has the final say on the project since Highway 282 is a state roadway. • Small Business Consulting

Scott County is inviting kindergartners through eighthgraders from area schools and communities to help develop several designs and drawings for Scott County’s new 2040 Comprehensive Plan and a logo for the Scott County Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) initiative. The winning submissions will be used for the document cover page and section title pages of the 2040 comprehensive plan and/or will be used in promotional materials, web sites, and for materials produced by Scott County SHIP. The 2040 comprehensive plan will guide residents and decision makers on future land use, transportation, recreation, natural resources, utilities, and safe, healthy and livable communities. It will reflect goals, values, and vision of county residents and the section title pages will help the county illustrate those. Scott County SHIP provides funds for various healthy eating and active living initiatives for

the community. The SHIP strategies for Scott County include healthy eating and active living in schools, worksite wellness, healthy eating and active living in the community, and building healthcare. Initiatives SHIP supports include schoolyard gardens, community gardens, food shelves, farmers markets, wellness support at worksites, linking patients to resources in healthcare, and much more. The county wants submissions from six topic areas. The first is a logo for the Statewide Health Improvement Program in Scott County. The county is looking for ideas aimed at creating good health for Scott County communities by supporting healthy eating and active lifestyle choices, and understanding that health matters. The additional five topic areas will support the cover pages of the Scott County 2040 Comprehensive Plan. These topics include transportation, parks and trails, water and natural resources, and an overall vision for Scott

County. Any design will be accepted, whether hand drawn or computer-based. Each winning design will receive recognition in the 2040 comprehensive plan, a certificate, and cash prize of $100. Submission deadline is June 15, 2016. A committee of Scott County employees working on the 2040 comprehensive plan and SHIP will choose winning designs. Designs will be chosen by July 1, and winners will be notified by July 15. All decisions are final. Entries may be submitted by email or paper form. Please see the registration form at https:// www.scottcountymn.gov/1397/ Logo-Competition for details on where to send submissions and for other details about the contest. The local band, Horseplay, will be performing this month in Minneapolis at the Stone Arch Bridge Festival. The music and art festival runs June 17-19. Horseplay will perform Saturday, June 18. The band is scheduled to take the stage at 4:30 p.m. for a 45minute set, said Jack Winders, a guitarist and lead vocalist for the band. Horseplay’s play list at the festival will include songs from the album it released last year as well as new selections the band has written since the release of its first album. Winders expects “we’ll be able to squeeze about 10 songs” into the 45-minute set. The opportunity to perform at the festival came about last year. Winders heard about the festival from people he knows in the local music scene. The band submitted an application, biographical information and

its first album to a committee that selected talent for the festival. “They liked what they heard and added us to the festival,” Winders said. “It’ll be good exposure for us.” The band includes Winders and Jayden Howie on guitar and vocals. Seth Tuscherer of Ipswich, S.D. joins the two Belle Plaine musicians on drums and vocals, and Levi Malterud from Watertown, S.D. on bass guitar and vocals. Winders and Howie are both students at South Dakota State University. The Stone Arch Bridge Music & Art Festival includes a variety of art in different forms. Musicians perform on any of three stages. Festival organizers say about 100,000 people attend the festival on the Minneapolis riverfront, between the stone arch bridge and Hennepin Avenue Bridge.

In loving memory of our beloved husband and father, Richard “Dick Klehr who passed away on May 31, 2015.

When someone you love dies, you never quite get over it. You just learn to slowly go on without them. But always keeping them tucked safely within your heart.

What we’d give if we could say, Hello, Dad, in the same old way; To hear your voice, and see your smile, To sit with you and chat awhile, So if you who have a father, Cherish him with care, For you’ll never know the heartache, Till you see his vacant chair.

BPHS student Michael Chabot was recognized by the Belle Plaine town baseball team for his painting of the Tiger mascot for the interior of the grandstand at Tiger Park.

Town Tigers Baseball

Belle Plaine Cruises Past Minnesota Lake by Brett Kruschke and Mike Schultz The Tigers won their only game of the past week while enjoying more of a holiday break than previously anticipated. Last Wednesday’s 12-4 romp over Brad Lawson and the Minnesota Lake Royals lifted the Tigers’ season record to 3-5 (1-2 RVL). The high school Tigers are the No. 1-ranked team in the state in Class 2A and the playoffs are now underway. With 11 members of the town team roster affected – eight players, three coaches – the Tigers were forced to cancel Friday’s game at Cannon Falls and Tuesday’s game at St. Anthony. The nine-day layoff will end Friday when the Milroy Irish come to town for an 8 p.m. start time. Last year, BP made the trek to Milroy’s newest ballpark, The Irish Yard. We were shown uncommon hospitality and made quick friends, so this year’s game is part of plans to continue the series indefinitely in the upcoming years. Friday will also be Matt Saxe Chevrolet Buick Night; look for the usual giveaways from this generous hometown sponsor. After “Anchors Away” graduates a handful of Tigers on Sunday afternoon, the rest of the squad will host the Le Sueur Braves in RVL action at 6 p.m. It will be Cambria Night, fitting with the supportive local business being stationed in both towns. Next Tuesday will feature another RVL contest when the 169 corridor to Jordan gets traversed for a 7:30 p.m. affair. June 10-12 is the Tigertown Classic, an eight-team invitational tournament that serves as one of the Tigers’ two primary fund-raisers. The other, the Tiger Open Golf Tournament, is currently seeking golfers and sponsors for the June 18 outing at CreeksBend in New Prague. If you’d like to participate, please visit bptigertown.com and click the golf ball icon on the home page. Interested sponsors can contact Shane Hofmann at 952-484-2319 or any BPBA member. Last Monday (May 23) a ceremony was held at Tiger Park before the high school team’s

game to unveil the new tiger head painting by BPHS student Michael Chabot. The painting will adorn the interior of the grandstand for many years to come. If you see Michael, please thank him for a job well done. Tigers 12, Minnesota Lake 4 The Minnesota Lake Royals came to town for a rare Wednesday night match up. Former – and always – Tiger Brad Lawson is on the Royals squad, so your hometown nine was hungry for a victory. Belle Plaine came away with a fairly un-crisply-played 12-4 triumph. The Tigers committed five errors but did belt out 13 hits while yielding only four. Ben Wagner got the start on the mound and went five solid innings, allowing just three hits and a run while punching out two. Joe Pomije threw two solid stanzas and Jared Miller made his town team mound debut and did a great job, throwing two frames with zero nose bleeds. Dylan Nyberg led the team offensively, gathering two hits. Derek Dahlke added a double and Pomije popped a triple for good measure. A good time was had by all. 2016 Town Tigers Remaining Schedule June 3 vs. Milroy June 5 vs. Le Sueur June 7 at Jordan Tigertown Classic June 10 vs. Wells June 11 vs. Marshall/Renner June 12 vs. TBD June 17 at Union Hill June 19 at Fairfax June 19 vs. New Ulm Kaiser. Belle Plaine Wins Subsection Titles Section Meet at Mankato This Thursday

by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School boys’ and girls’ track and field teams followed up their duo Minnesota River Conference team championships with a pair of subsection team titles Thursday at Tri-City United High School in Montgomery. The Tigers qualified a number of athletes from the seven-team meet for this Saturday’s Section 2A Meet at Mankato West High School, where the top two individuals and top two relay teams will advance to the state Class 1A meet scheduled for June 1011 at Hamline University in St. Paul. Tigers’ Playoff Run Ends at 2-2 by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School softball team opened the Section 2AA Tournament with a convincing 11-0 victory over Kenyon-Wanamingo last Tuesday at the Belle Plaine Athletic Complex, which advanced the Tigers to the double-elimination phase of the tournament. The rout of Kenyon-Wanamingo was where easy street ended for the sixth-seeded Tigers, who 48 hours later lost at St. Peter 5-3. Their loser’s bracket game against No. 7 seed NRHEG at Caswell Park in North Mankato on Saturday was postponed due to rain until Memorial Day. The Tigers managed to eliminate NRHEG by a 3-1 margin but a couple of hours later got eliminated themselves by Fairmont 6-3. Le Sueur-Henderson, the top seed, has yet to lose in the tournament and is the heavy favorite to defend its title. Jordan, the No. 2 seed, lost to No. 3 St. Peter Monday and is now trying to fight off elimination in the loser’s bracket. The tournament was scheduled to resume Tuesday. Tigers 11, K-W 0 Kaylee Hentges and Jessica Prader both homered as the Tigers enjoyed a merry-go-round outing on the base paths in an 11-0 victory over Kenyon-Wanamingo last Tuesday in Belle Plaine. Belle Plaine scored four runs in the first inning, two in the second, two in the fourth and three in the fifth, the latter of which was punctuated by Prader’s homer. Besides hitting a home run, Hentges pitched the distance and did not allow K-W a hit, giving up only two walks and striking out 12. McKenzie Koepp had two hits and knocked in three runs, while Prader also had three RBI. Hentges had two RBI, followed by Maddi Lark, Gabrielle VonBank and Maddie Haller with one apiece. St. Peter 5, Tigers 3 It looked like the Tigers were well on their way to a win at the home of a higher-seeded team as they led 3-0 before the Saints scored two in the fourth inning and three in the sixth for a 5-3 come-from-behind victory Thursday in St. Peter.

Belle Plaine outhit St. Peter 10-4 but mistakes in the field proved costly. Koepp had three hits and a RBI, while Elizabeth Johnson had two hits and a RBI. Prader had two hits, followed by Hentges, Lark and Hailey Witt with one apiece. Hentges again pitched the complete game for the Tigers, allowing five runs (three earned) on four hits and three walks. She struck out four. Tigers 3, NRHEG 1 Memorial Day got off to a fine start for the Tigers at Caswell Park as they beat NRHEG 3-1. The Tigers overcame a 1-0 deficit with a run in the bottom of the first inning and took the lead for good with two in the third inning. Haller pitched all seven innings, allowing one run on four hits and one walk. She had seven strikeouts. Lark and Prader both had two hits for Belle Plaine, while Hentges, Johnson, Koepp and VonBank all had one. Koepp and Witt both drove in a run. Fairmont 6, Tigers 3 As was the case in its first tournament loss against St. Peter, Belle Plaine got off to a quick start with a trio of runs in the top of the first inning, which included a two-run homer by Koepp. VonBank had the other RBI. The lead held until the bottom of the third inning when the Cardinals rallied for four

runs. They added two more in the sixth inning and the Tigers never answered. Koepp finished the day with three hits, followed by Witt and Prader both with two. Hentges, Lark and VonBank had Belle Plaine’s other hits. Koepp pitched 4 1/3 innings and Haller 1 2/3. Combined, they gave up four earned runs, 11 hits and one walk. “We had a very fun year,” said Belle Plaine coach Luke Audette. “It didn’t always end up with a win but it is a privilege to coach these girls. We as a team wish the best to seniors Kaylee Hentges, Maddi Lark, McKenzie Koepp and Maddie Lark. Belle Plaine Secures Top Seed

by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School baseball team, champions of the Minnesota River Conference for a third year in a row, concluded the regular season with a quick and decisive 11-0 nonconference victory over Faribault Bethlehem Academy last Tuesday at Tiger Park. The Tigers finished the regular season with 19 wins in 20 outings. As expected, Belle Plaine received the No. 1 seed for the Section 2AA Tournament that got underway Friday without Belle Plaine, which got a firstround bye and entered postseason as the top-ranked team in the state in Class 2A. The Tigers were scheduled to host No. 9 seed St. James Area on Tuesday after this edition of the Herald went to press. St. James earned its ticket to Belle Plaine by ousting No. 8 seed Sibley East 4-0 in the first round. The tournament becomes doubleelimination from here on. The Belle Plaine-St. James winner will play the winner between No. 5 seed GibbonFairfax-Winthrop (19-2) and No. 13 NRHEG (9-12) this Thursday at the home of the higher seed. The losers will begin elimination play. After Thursday, the remainder of the tournament will be played at Veteran’s Field in St. Peter, beginning this Saturday. A big upset occurred in the first round when No. 14 seed Blue Earth Area (6-15) took out No. 3 Kenyon-Wanamingo (18-2) by a 5-2 score. BEA was scheduled to take on No. 6 seed TriCity United (12-9) on Tuesday. The other second-round game Tuesday had No. 7 Waterville Elysian-Morristown (15-6) at No. 2 Fairmont (18-4). Tigers 11, Faribault BA 0 Belle Plaine scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning, three more in the second and four in the fourth as it routed Faribault Bethlehem Academy 11-0 last Tuesday at Tiger Park. “We really came ready to play in all areas of the game. It was a great last game before the playoffs,” said Tigers coach Pat Schultz. “Our starters played solid, our bench guys played well and showed they will be ready when called on in the playoffs. Our pitching and defense was very strong.” Brody Curtiss pitched the first three innings, allowing no hits and striking out three. Wes Sarsland hurled the final two innings, allowing the only hit Belle Plaine’s McKenzie Koepp slid home safely during last Tuesday’s playoff win against for the Cardinals but preserving Kenyon-Wanamingo. the shutout. He also had three strikeouts. Luke Narveson was a force offensively, getting two hits, including a home run, double and three RBI. He also stole a base and scored twice. Aiden Ladd added two hits, including a triple, RBI and a stolen base. Jared Miller had a hit and two RBI, while Curtiss had a hit and one RBI. Also contributing to the Tigers’ 10hits were Danny McCann, Josh Juaire, Jon Schmidt and Ryan Bremseth-Vining. 2016 BPHS Baseball Results and Remaining Schedule Apr. 9 B.P. Belle Plaine Students Among Ridgeview Scholarship Recipients

Two Belle Plaine students are among 16 seniors who will receive a $2,000 Ridgeview Foundation Health Care Scholarship. The awards are for high schoolers pursuing a healthcare related degree or career. The Ridgeview Health Care Scholarship is 100 percent funded by Ridgeview Friends & Family, Ridgeview’s largest and oldest giving club, through annual donations from community members and Ridgeview employees.

In 2001, Ridgeview Foundation created the scholarship program in response to the shortage of health care workers. Nearly $90,000 was raised at the 2001 Ridgeview Foundation Golf Extravaganza toward the creation of the scholarship program. The Foundation has awarded scholarships to 196 area students since the program’s inception. Ridgeview Medical Center becomes an educational resource for many recipients as they frequently

participate in job shadows and internships offered by Ridgeview. To date, 12 previous scholarship recipients have come to work at Ridgeview. For more information about the scholarship program and its eligibility requirements, or to donate to the scholarship fund, please contact Ridgeview Foundation at 952-442-6010. ka-Hennepin School District, Lyle Noah arrived in Belle Plaine for the 1980-81 school year to teach social studies and physical education, a year that initially seems fairly recent. “It doesn’t seem that long ago until you stop and think the juniors in my (social studies) class were born in the late1990s, he said. Belle Plaine was unlike anything Noah was accustomed to. A graduate of Coon Rapids High School, he was unaccustomed to the small class sizes Belle Plaine enjoys. “I had 400-some in my graduating class. I didn’t know everybody, he said. “Here, everybody knows everybody. I like that. He quickly took to the community’s small-town charm. He likes the tight-knit school community. He needed little time to feel welcomed. “The guy who works on my car is a former student, he said. The welcoming community erased any wanderlust for a bigger school district. The smaller school afforded Noah the opportunity to be involved in many activities. Besides teaching, he has coached various levels of track & field, basketball, golf, football and volleyball. He has been involved in other activities, like running the school’s junior-senior prom for many years. Lyle four children – Justen, Chad, Ryan and Molly – all participated in school sports. He coached them all. Occasionally, Chad and Molly enjoy spirited sibling banter about who earned more varsity letters and who was the better athlete. At 65, Noah contemplated retirement last year. He didn’t enjoy teaching as much as he had in previous years. But this year, he decided the time for a new life path had arrived. He also came back for reasons that include seeing how far the volleyball players he’d helped coach could go against the state’s best. With the motivation of finishing the year with a victory, the Tigers won a state title. “We’ve been to state before, but this is a good group, he said. “Being a part of that was great. Noah sees many of his former students on the staff at Belle Plaine, young teachers like Joe Ploetz, Pat Schultz and Melissa Hollnagel. He likes the direction the school is going. “Lyle Noah is just a great teacher, Hollnagel said. “He has passion for his class’s content and he’s easy to approach and talk to. He’s one of those teachers a young teacher can talk to and rely on. Noah plans to stay in Belle Plaine for the near future. He has grandchildren in the Twin Cities he looks forward to spending more time with. He’ll work on summer cleaning crews at the school, perhaps substitute teaching on occasion. His wife, Debra, is a flight attendant, a profession that makes traveling easier. “I’ll find something to do, he said.

Carol Schultz

Growing up in Jordan, Carol Schultz never expected she’d spend nearly 40 years as a teacher helping children develop a passion for one of the most fundamental skills a person needs. She expected her primary job would be raising children and maintaining a household. But this week, Schultz will spend time with students helping them develop and strengthen a passion for reading. The longtime Title 1 teacher arrived in the Belle Plaine School District 34 years ago after five years teaching in parochial schools in Jordan and Prior Lake. “I came from a generation where you got married and had children. It was a big deal to go to college, she said. “But as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be a teacher. After graduating from high school in 1973, Schultz heeded the advice of a school counselor, Jerry Longsworth, and went to St. Cloud State to study elementary education. Of her six closest friends from college, four are teachers. In Belle Plaine, Schultz started Zach Olson, an eighth-grader at Belle Plaine Junior High School, presented a children’s book working with third- and fourthhe wrote and illustrated to kindergartners from Chatfield Elementary School. The book was graders. Eventually, the Title 1 program was switched to kina project for Melissa Hollnagel’s English class. It gave the junior high students the chance to dergarten through second grade reconnect with their own kindergarten teachers still at Chatfield. at Chatfield Elementary School.

Presenting His Work to a Knowledgeable Audience

The job was part-time when she started; Schultz worked four days a week with a schedule that allowed a young mother to be home for her own children. “I always loved elementary students. The huge and smiles, they are so anxious to learn, to please, she said. As a reading specialist, Schultz knows the work she does is especially important. A student who does not read well, she said, will likely struggle in most every other subject area. She’s pleased with the Belle Plaine School District’s renewed emphasis on literacy. “If you can’t read well, it closes so many doors. Reading well is a foundation for everything you need to do, she said. “I want my students to want to pick up a book. She works with a limited number of students who qualify for Title 1 services. Most of Schultz’s work is one-on-one. Years ago, she worked with smaller groups, usually four to six at a time. “Carol is passionate about her job. She has a strong relationship with her students and they know she cares about them, said Courtney Schmidt, a second-grade teacher at Chatfield. Growing up, reading was a skill she learned to pass time when she was not spending time with any of her siblings. When the family moved up the hill, not far from the site of Jordan High School, there weren’t many children around. “My mom always loved to read, Schultz said. Schultz works to make reading enjoyable. She uses games and word cards to promote understanding. At the end of the week, she allows students to select their own books as a reward for a good week. “It’s the best feeling in the world, seeing a student ask for a specific book, she said. “Carol loves working with children. Her patience and knowledge of reading skills complement her kind smile and warm heart, said Melissa Brueske, a second-grade teacher at Chatfield Elementary School. “It’s these attributes that encourage kids to be successful. Schultz, 61, is retiring at a time while she loves her job. She wants to go out that way. She looks forward to spending time with her children and grandchildren. “I’ve had a great career. Knowing I’ve helped children become better readers, it’s been wonderful, she said.

Sue Stier

Sue Stier knows not everybody is passionate about math. That’s OK because she is. “I love the logic of it, the organization and attention to detail in math. That’s important in a tech-oriented society, she said. “I like the problem-solving. I’m very sequential. Stier’s retirement will be official in September. She leaves with nearly 25 years of teaching math in Belle Plaine. Her career path includes part-time teaching jobs in Jordan and Chaska before she arrived in Belle Plaine. Stier taught calculus classes early in her career. She worked with the Belle Plaine School District’s gifted and talented math students in her early days. “She has worked with accelerated students as well as struggling students and gives each student her best effort, time and attention, said Mindy Cheva-

lier, an assistant principal at the junior-senior high school. “Sue is all for celebrating the success of our students, when there is a rewards day or activity night, sign her up for participating. Most recently, her teaching assignments in Belle Plaine have been in pre-algebra and algebra classes. Stier is known for making math “fun, she said. She used games as a way to exercise students’ abilities to solve problems. Stier used the stock market game for years to help pre-algebra students figure out percentages of growth and decline and predict trends of companies’ growth/decline in the stock market. “I used projects to help them enjoy math by using things they know, she said. Stier has used a variety of techniques to help students develop their mastery of math. Her students can take advantage of online textbooks. She videos her presentations and places them online for students to revisit. She also knows another teacher in another school might explain the same lesson in a slightly different way. “When you teach middle school, you need to have a sense of humor and you need to know how to connect with kids. Sue has done that successfully throughout her teaching career, Chevalier said. If the student’s understanding improves, the name of the teacher who helped them gain a better understanding isn’t as important. “When a student gets it and understands what you’re working on, that is one of the best moments ever, Stier said. “She works very hard to connect with the students at their ability level and grow them from there. She works with students before school, after school and during study hall and prep times. If you need help, she will always be there for extra support, Chevalier said. “She challenges students and celebrates their successes. Being a math teacher wasn’t part of Stier’s original plan. As a student at the University of Northern Colorado, she studied political science. It was the early-1970s and young people were intrigued by politics as they saw the impact President Nixon had on the country and world and the impact of the Watergate scandal. “In the ‘70s, we wanted to change the world, Stier said. But political science lacked a certain order that Stier thought made sense. “I was bored, she said. She started taking more highlevel math classes. It was the type of challenge that made sense. She changed her major and plans for a career. Stier excelled and was soon tutoring students in advanced math classes. Fortunately for Stier, UNC specialized in preparing its math students for teaching. Her career path took a turn towards Minnesota when she met Dale Stier, who was a student at the school. He convinced Sue to move to Minnesota. The two were married and they have four adult children. “In the early-1980s, it wasn’t easy to get a job, she said. “The family support system here is very good. Stier plans to travel and enjoy time with her family. She also looks forward to having more time for gardening.
