City Council Okays Plans for Cricket Fields Near Oak Crest Indoor Firing Ranges to be a Permitted Use in City

Payton is Family’s ‘Miracle’ Baby

by Dan Ruud Two weeks after okaying the annexation of 10 acres from Belle Plaine Township for the project, the Belle Plaine City Council Monday night unanimously approved the site plan, preliminary plat and comprehensive plan amendment for a privately-funded cricket field complex east of Oak Crest Elementary School. Project engineer Paul Otto and Sabyasachi Sengupta of Chaska, the latter of whom recently purchased the 10-acre site from Ewald and Adella Gruetzmacher, addressed the council during the public hearing. They explained that plans for the complex call for two regulation-size cricket fields and a youth field. Also included will be parking and viewing areas. Future plans call for a 5,000-square-foot clubhouse and a dome over the youth field. “There is a lot of money going into this,” Otto said. Construction of the complex, which will be called Tatiana Fields, is proposed to begin this year. Sengupta said the complex will be named after his late wife, who died of cancer in October of 2015. She was 40 yards old. Sengupta said he plans to bring in cricket players/teams from the metro area, Canada and elsewhere to play in games and tournaments at the complex. He also wants to work with the school district and community education, etc. to make the complex accessible to local youth. The youth field will be multi-purpose in that soccer and lacrosse will be played on it as well, while field one will be used almost entirely for cricket.

Sabyasachi Sengupta attended Monday night’s city council meeting. Field two will be multi-purpose but not as much so as the youth field. Wayne Schmidt, who owns property adjacent to where the complex will be built, told the council that he’s supportive of the project but would like to make sure that proper fencing is installed. Cricket is a bat and ball game played on a circular field between two teams of eleven players who score runs (points) by running between posts called wickets. Each of the wickets is at one end of a rectangle of flattened grass called the pitch. Sengupta said cricket is the second-most popular sport in the “world” behind soccer, and is one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S. According to Topend Sports, Field hockey is No. 3 and tennis is No. 4 worldwide. The site plan for Tatiana Fields is published on page 9. In other business Monday night, the council unanimously approved an amendment to the city ordinance that will allow for indoor firing ranges in the city. Staff reported that in December members of the city’s planning and zoning commission began discussing indoor firing ranges following an inquiry to

one of its members. “At this time, indoor firing ranges are not specifically provided for within city code, as they are deemed prohibited,” reported Community Development Director Cynthia Smith Strack. She added that the planning and zoning commission reviewed zoning standards in communities with indoor firing ranges, including Chanhassen, Burnsville and Robbinsdale, along with sample code language from the cities of Jordan and St. Joseph. Smith Strack said the Belle Plaine Planning and Zoning Commission found that indoor firing ranges “under a conditional use permit in business and industrial zones may be appropriate and provide for economic opportunity that is currently disallowed.” Council Member Cary Coop asked Police Chief Tom Stolee about his thoughts on allowing indoor firing ranges in the city. Stolee said he has no concerns with the new ordinance and its conditions. Smith Strack said the city has not been contacted by anyone interested in building an indoor firing range in Belle Plaine at this time, but rather the planning and zoning commissioners just felt that it’s best the city have an ordinance in place if and when a proposal is made. No one spoke at the public hearing that preceded the council’s vote. *Unanimously approved an ordinance that will require a license for commercial tree contractors to do business within Belle Plaine’s city limits. Child, Family There was a time when Matt Smith’s confidence was tested as he fought to maintain hope his daughter, Payton, would survive the first few weeks and months of her fragile life. He relied on his wife, Sarah, and the little girl’s fighting spirit, her smile, to bolster his faith in the future. Sunday (March 26, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.) is another step in the future for Payton Smith and her family of Belle Plaine. They are the guests of honor at the 10th Annual Roman Barten Memorial Breakfast at the Knights of Columbus Hall in New Prague. The pancake breakfast is a community service project held each year in the memory of Roman Barten, a strong advocate of giving back to the community. The breakfast is a free-will offering with all proceeds going to benefit the Smith family. Sarah and Matt Smith met in Burnsville when they were in high school. They were married in 2006. They have a son and daughter, 6-year-old Austin and his sister, Taylor, 9. In 2015, the couple learned they were expecting a third child. But doctors detected something wrong with Sarah’s baby during the 20-week ultrasound. After several tests, they determined the baby was afflicted with Dandy-Walker Malformation, a condition in which part of the child’s brain did not develop. In addition, the cerebellum – the portion of the

brain that controls functions including balance and other muscular activity – was displaced. Doctors told Sarah and Matt their child’s quality of life would at best be minimal. Her life might be short-lived. They discussed, for only a moment, terminating the pregnancy. Sarah rejected the idea, choosing unconditional love for her unborn child over any anguish she might endure should

doctors’ worst fears come to pass. The doctors were not certain Payton would be able to survive long after birth. “I had to hold her,” Sarah said. “Even if she lived only an hour, I had to hold her.” Sarah refused to accept the notion of planning her daugh-

Belle Plaine High School graduate Michael Kroells capped his Minnesota Gophers wrestling career by earning his third All-American status at this past weekend’s NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo., where Kroells placed seventh in the heavyweight division. Kroells finished his Gophers career in dominate fashion, taking down Denzel Dejournette (Appalachian State) fewer than 20 seconds into their bout and building from there, ultimately scoring bonus points for Minnesota by earning a 17-2 tech fall. Shakopee School District Faces $4.5 Million Budget Gaff A $4.5 million budget error discovered late last year has Shakopee School District residents calling for answers and improved transparency from district leaders. Mike Burlager, the Shakopee School District’s retiring finance director, has accepted responsibility for the shortfall, the Shakopee Valley News recently reported. He attributed the $4.5 million budget error to flawed cost assumptions and new software the board approved. Burlager raised the specter of a budget shortfall at a meeting in December of 2016, but critics calling for greater

transparency are asking why the amount of the shortfall was not released then. Superintendent Rod Thompson said the district has waited until now to assure it was releasing the most accurate numbers available. Residents were also critical of Thompson because he sent out information on the shortfall to district staff via e-mail before fully informing the public. A listening meeting was scheduled for earlier this week (Monday, March 20). The Shakopee School Board will discuss the shortfall again at an April 10 meeting.

Band’s Spring Break Trip a Chance to Grow, Have Fun Belle Plaine High School Band Director Kevin Robinson is confident the musicians in the Belle Plaine High School band will know when it’s time to perform and when they have time for fun during next week’s spring break trip to Florida. The band is heading to Orlando to perform at Disney World. They’ll leave Friday (March 24) and begin the 1,550-mile trip before arriving in the sunshine state Saturday. The group has at least one performance in downtown Disney World scheduled for Sunday (March 26). Robinson is hoping he can arrange an impromptu concert while before heading home. The band will perform a farewell concert tomorrow evening

Green Isle City Council Wants Heavier Trucks to Go Elsewhere Green Isle has had its share of challenges taking care of roads through the city. That’s why Mayor Joe Kreger needed little effort convincing the city council to support opposition to a proposal allowing heavier trucks on Minnesota roads. State law currently allows some classification of trucks to weigh up to 80,000 pounds. Kreger told the council at its March 14 meeting he’d learned of a proposal state lawmakers are considering that would allow that weight to increase to 90,000. The city’s concern is that the heavier trucks will accelerate the deterioration of roadways, especially city streets. Proponents of the heavier weight limits claim the increase limits will lead to fewer trucks on alreadyclogged roadways. “The cars are getting smaller and the trucks are getting bigger,” said Councilor Shawn Harms. Kreger asked the council to support a motion of opposition to the proposal. He passed the council’s opposition on to Green Isle’s state lawmakers,

It will also be playing outdoors in an open setting. “I think it will be good for our kids to be playing outside of our community,” he said. “This will be something totally different for them.” The young musicians will also have the opportunity to enjoy many of the area’s tourist attractions. The band’s itinerary includes visits to Cocoa Beach, Epcot Theme Park at Disney World, Sea World and the Magic Kingdom. The group will start their trip home Wednesday (March 29) and arrive back in Belle Plaine Thursday evening.

Cologne Won’t Endorse Carver County’s Taxes-for-Roads Plan

Mayor Matt Lein admitted he and his fellow members of the Cologne City Council want the best of both sides of the preverbal coin regarding Carver County’s proposed tax plan for road improvements. Monday evening (March 20), councilors approved sending a letter to the county that declines to endorse the request for support of new taxes. The city council unanimously supported sending a letter signed by the mayor absent of support for Carver County’s request Cologne endorse a ½-percent local option sales tax and additional $10 money on the wheelage tax and $20 excise tax money on the sale of vehicles. County commissioners asked cities and townships to consider endorsing the proposal as a means to fund several unfunded but much-needed improvements to portions of state roads like Highway 41, Highway 5 and Highway 212. The non-endorsement is somewhat of an about-face for the city council. Two weeks ago, councilors were warm to the idea as a means of funding local road projects and preparing the community for growth. “We fear that this could be the wrong message we are sending to the state, and put us in a position in the long run of having to not only take care of our own local transportation needs, but also the state as well,” Lein wrote. Cologne offered empathy to county commissioners while being critical of the state. The city council noted in the letter its doubt the state will ever step up and take care of these responsibilities and that if the city does not do something at the local level, nothing will ever be addressed.

But the letter stops short of saying Cologne opposes the proposed ½-percent local option sales tax, the additional wheelage tax and the local excise tax money. Lein personally supported the ½-percent local option sales tax, noting the revenue would stay in the county. He believes the final decision rests with the county board. “Our citizens think we tax them too much,” Lein said after the meeting. We just don’t want to impose another tax. We want our roads, we just don’t want another tax.” But while being unwilling to support the proposed tax hike for road projects, Cologne did express its desire that should the county board enact any or all of the three revenue-generating options, it wanted the expansion of Highway 212 from two lanes to four lanes east of Cologne to Carver moved to the top of the list. Cologne also wants Highway 284 – Cologne’s primary north-sound state roadway -- added to the list of improvement projects. The mayor concedes the odds of adding Highway 284 to the list of unfunded projects or the expansion of Highway 212 east of the city to Carver are less likely without the city’s support. He fears the additional revenue the new taxes generate would go to projects on highways 41 or 5 in Chaska or Waconia while Highway 212 is critical to Cologne’s expansion. Carver County’s plan is based on what it says is a $128 million funding shortfall in needed road projects over the next 24 years. The road projects are primarily in the eastern and southern half of Carver County and include expansion of Highway 212 from Carver to Cologne

and from Cologne to Norwood Young America. Carver County commissioners are planning a 9 a.m. work session Tuesday, March 28. Depending on board direction, the county could then hold a public hearing on Tuesday, April 18, 4 p.m. The earliest potential adoption of the proposed taxes is Tuesday, May 2. In other action at the March 20 meeting, the Cologne City Council: • Paid bills totaling $60,799.99. • Granted a request from Fire Chief Chuck Joos for repairing flooring ($4,018.68), cleaning air ducts ($1,104) and installing window blinds ($2,725) at Lewis Hall. • Approved the purchase of a replacement return activated sludge pump for the wastewater treatment plant for $4,785 from Integrated Process Solutions of Fosston, Minn. • Approved hauler’s licenses for Suburban Waste Services of Savage, Randy’s Sanitation of Delano and Waste Management of Winsted, Minn. as haulers approved to do business in the city. • Approved a proposal from Holasek & Son Greenhouse of Lester Prairie, Minn. to replace existing shrubbery in front of Cologne Community Center at a cost of $1,459.21. The new shrubbery will be installed once the city conforms the watering system is properly functioning. • Once again discussed implementation of a plan to have the city council go paperless through the purchase of Chromebooks and implementation of new software designed to make preparing an agenda more efficient.

Hilma (Stoeckmann) Flynn Hilma Helene (Stoeckmann) Flynn, 95, of Hamburg, Minnesota, passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Marie Steiner Kelting Hospice House in Chaska. Memorial services were held on Saturday, March 18 at 11 a.m. at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg with interment at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Pastor Donald Andrix ofďŹ ciated. Arrangements by the Johnson-McBride Funeral Chapel of Glencoe. Hilma Helene (Stoeckmann) Flynn was born March 25, 1921, near Hamburg. She was the daughter of August and Martha (Eggers) Stoeckmann. Hilma was baptized as an infant on April 3, 1921, and later was conďŹ rmed in her faith as a youth on April 14, 1935, both by Rev. H. Boumann at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg. Her conďŹ rmation verse was Psalm 37:37. Hilma attended Emanuel Lutheran Church parochial school in Hamburg through the 8th grade and then graduated from Glencoe High School in Glencoe with the Class of 1939. On July 10, 1941, Hilma was united in marriage to Gilbert E. Flynn. Hilma and Gilbert made their home in Hamburg. Their marriage was blessed with six children, Terrence, Laurel, Maureen, Thomas, Kimberly and Michele. Hilma and Gilbert shared over 30 years of marriage, until Gilbert passed away on July 13, 1971. Hilma farmed with Gilbert until he entered the service during World War II. During that time frame, Hilma worked at Munsingwear and Greyhound until the war ended. After the war, they continued to farm near Hamburg. Hilma also worked at Tonka Toys and the Young America Corporation. She was a member at Emanuel Lutheran Church in Hamburg. Hilma enjoyed reading, doing puzzles, ďŹ&#x201A;owers and watching the birds. Most of all, she loved spending time with her family and friends. She married Severin Riesgraf at St. Benedict on May 14, 1946, and the couple farmed outside of Union Hill until the mid-1980â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s. After moving to New Prague, Rosella worked at Clemmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Restaurant, the Park Ballroom, Knights of Columbus Hall, and Cedar Lake Farm. She was past president of the American Legion Post 45, and belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, CCW, Quilting Sewing Club, Ramo Cards, Catholic Aid Association and Mission Sewing Group for years. She enjoyed traveling, playing cards, gardening, canning, quilting, sewing and crocheting. Rosella is survived by her husband, Severin of Belle Plaine; children, Carol Jean (Roger) Bauer of Union Hill, Rosie (Wes) Blacketer of Osage City, KS, Charlene (Don) Skluzacek of New Prague, Donald (Brenda) Riesgraf of Cross Junction, VA, Sharon Riesgraf of Le Sueur; sisters-in-law, Glady Krautkremer Busch and Julia Krautkremer; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren. Nicole Oestreich Nicole Oestreich, 34, of Belle Plaine, passed away on March 15, 2017 at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park. Visitation was 4-8 p.m. on Tuesday at the Kolden Funeral Home in Belle Plaine and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday morning. Dear Editor, Bill Would Pave the Way for More & Larger Factory Farms In rural Minnesota, we know farmers are facing record low prices and our communities are suffering because of that. Legislators should be working to ďŹ gure out how to help family farmers get through these tough times. Instead, I see bills designed to help the biggest corporate-backed operations get bigger and take away the rights of neighbors. In Minnesota, factory farms over 1,000 animal units have to do environmental review before they are built. Senate File 1016 by Sen. Weber and House File 1456 by Rep. Swedzinski proposes to DOUBLE this to 2,000 animal units! One thousand animal units is the very largest sized feedlots in Minnesota and is equal to 3,333 hogs, 714 dairy cows, 1,000 steer or 200,000 chickens. One thousand units is so large that last year only nine proposed factory farms had to do environmental review before being built. Environmental review is extremely important because it evaluates the potential harm, before a project is built to see if it can be minimized. It also means neighbors get to know what is being proposed and get a chance to comment on it before permits are issued and construction begins. If you are going to store millions of gallons of raw liquid manure in one place you should be required to do it right. That means doing an environmental review. If this bills passes, the factory farms that are 900 animal units now can double in size without doing environmental review. Senate File 1016 by Sen. Weber and House File 1456 by Rep. Swedzinski are about helping the very largest factory farms, at the expense of rural communities. Thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wrong! Dear Editor, There have been a lot of headlines already this year. The closing down of Ringling Brothers Circus was really important to me. I confess that I attended the circus only once. I enjoyed it but never found a way to return. Ringling Brothers is closing because it could no longer survive the lawsits, picketing, and general harassment of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), HSUS (Humane Society of the United States), and their local committees and action arms. I will miss the circus but I am concerned about what PETA will ban next. Cage free eggs are already in motion. Bacon is high on their list. Hamburger is offensive to their view of the world. I am personally threatened by their hatred of wool socks. I shear sheep for owners of small ďŹ&#x201A;ocks (5 to 10 sheep). PETA says harvesting wool is cruel and painful to the sheep. People and sheep have a 10,000 year relationship. The prophet Isaiah understood sheep shearing. Sheep and people need each other. Wool socks are good for your feet and give sheep a meaning for their life. I need the money shearing a few sheep generates. I ask you to be careful with your charitable donatons. Two more remain in the approval process, one in New Market Township and the SunShare/Scott Sun proposal in on land owned by Bonita and John Kane in Blakeley Township. Scott Sun will lease the land from Kane and return it to its condition before the solar garden was installed at the end of the lease. Concerns have been raised regarding the impact the SunShare proposal may have on a neighboring farmerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tile line. Davis said staff has yet to sign off on any of the concerns raised about the proposed solar garden in Blakeley.

Giving in to the complaints of residents who feel they are too great a blemish amidst a rural landscape, Scott County commissioners recently put a cap on the size of future solar gardens. The county board capped the capacity of solar garden at 1 megawatt, a limitation that will keep them at 10 acres or less. But that move does not impact the proposed SunShare/Scott Sun Solar Garden proposed for 40 acres along County Road 1 in Blakeley Township. SunShareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 5 megawatt solar garden was submitted in late-2015 and is grandfathered into the new regulations, said Brad Davis, Scott Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s planning manager. The town board previously backed the plan, with several conditions. Those conditions included screening from the road and addressing tile lines from a neighboring property. Davis said people feel the large solar gardens are too exposed. He said neighbors and area residents have complained about the appearance, despite screening requirements approved by township ofďŹ cials. Critics have also complained the solar gardens take valuable farmland out of production. The amendment to the zoning code also limits the distance between solar gardens to no less than two miles, a provision intended to maintain the areaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rural appearance. Belle Plaine held its annual St. Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bash that Saturday with another large throng of clans and other participants. Lisa Witt, daughter of Jim and Marilyn Witt, was crowned Miss Shamrock. The grand marshals of the parade were John and Helen Morrison. Bob Sweeney of St. Paul, representing the Spellacy clan, was winner of an Irish Jig Contest. Others on hand for the celebration included Minnesota Attorney General Skip Humphrey, who had pinned to his coat a big shamrock with â&#x20AC;&#x153;Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Humphreyâ&#x20AC;? written on it. A large delegation of St. Lawrence Township residents met with the Scott County Fair Board about the possibility of allowing sprint racing cars on the fairgrounds track through the summer session. Fair Secretary Maynard Harms of Belle Plaine took the ďŹ&#x201A;oor to explain that the board must be willing to consider any source of income that would help to make the grounds more self-supporting. The St. Lawrence Township Board was planning to appoint a committee to consider the environmental impact the races would have on the township. The progress of the Bloomington Ferry Bridge was closely linked to the 65-mile-per-hour speed limit issue. Both issues were part of a federal government highway and mass transit ďŹ nancial bill passed by Congress that week. The bill was now awaiting a possible veto by President Reagan. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If the highway bill is approved by President Reagan, we will have the $2.75 million we need to design the Bloomington Ferry Bridge,â&#x20AC;? said Scott County Deputy Administrator Brandt Richardson. The designing of the bridge would cost at least $2.75 million of the $40 million package for design and construction. Area lawmakers had been trying for years to procure federal funding to see the project through. The Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative would kick off its 50th anniversary celebration on March 28 with its annual meeting at the Jordan High School auditorium. Belle Plaine had an exclusive womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s store â&#x20AC;&#x201C; handling ready-to-wear, lingerie and silks. It was operated by Mrs. Nate Weitzman. Walter Edward Doheny, 80, who had come from Pennsylvania to Sibley County in 1887, died in St. Paul. Burial was at Green Isle. Dr. M.W. Lyons, who had been in medical practice here a half year, moved to Watkins. In the drive for support of the local Boy Scouts, a total of $260 was collected. The marriage of Miss Helen Marie Lynch, a native of Assumption, to Dr. Asher C. Biddle took place in Seattle, Wash. The couple established their home in Billings, Mont. Running for ofďŹ ce was popular that spring. Three sought the ofďŹ ce of mayor of Belle Plaine and seven for the two vacancies on the council. Thomas Lochen Sr., Union Hill pioneer settler, died at age 90. A native of Germany, he lived in the Union Hill community for 60 years. Two cars of a freight train jumped the track as the train was leaving the Blakeley station, tipped over and rolled down an embankment. Five cows and a few hogs were found dead under the wreckage. The bad spot in the road just south of the Le Sueur County line continued to be a barrier to bus service. Cars had a bad time getting through. Mrs. James Sinclair, daughter

of Mr. and Mrs. D. Sullivan of St. Thomas, died at her home in Albany at the age of 66. A St. Paul commission merchant named Olschlagel was charged with receiving butter stolen from creameries in Jordan, Lydia and several in Carver County. He didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t pay cash for the butter but traded it for bootleg liquor, some of which was peddled back into the counties in which the butter was stolen.

120 Years Ago (1897)

As bad as the roads were the last week of March, James Taylor managed to drive from St. Paul to Belle Plaine in his horse and buggy. Joe Krenzkempee came from St. Paul and opened a bakery in the building formerly called Weibelerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s bowling alley, the ďŹ rst regular bakery to open here. The high water in the river valley was an occasion of wonder to all the countryside. Considerably over a mile wide, the water reached from the lower foothills on one side to the bluffs on the other side. The ďŹ&#x201A;ood was considered the highest since the record year of 1881. Belle Plaine added an additional ferryboat to its ďŹ&#x201A;eet on the river, a boat 20 feet long and 4 1/2 feet wide, which was built by James Mangan. It cost $3,000 to run the borough that year, plus $3,000 expended in taking up bridge bonds.

Fred Heiland, manager of the Belle Plaine Farmers Creamery, announced the creamery would give free butter to anyone interested in baking cookies for the State Butter Cookie contest sponsored by the Minnesota Creamery Operators Association in connection with the American Dairy Association. Mrs. Henry Oâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;Connell, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Doherty, pioneer settlers of the St. Thomas community, died at the age of 82. Of the 11 students that represented Belle Plaine in the district declam contest, Lavonne Hagerman advanced to the regional meet in the Pantomime division. Terry Moriarty, Paul Tillquist and Mike Fogarty were alternates. Carol Stier also received a superior rating. At the 1957 annual meeting of the Minnesota Valley Electric Cooperative, one of the highlights was the election of directors. Roy Chard of St. Lawrence, W.H. Zimmerman of Excelsior and John P. Halloran of Belle Plaine were reelected. Eileen Wolff, daughter of William Wolff of Janesville, became the bride of Edward A. Burns, son of Mrs. T.J. Burns of St. Thomas. Belle Plaine would be missing the services of speedster outďŹ elder Peter Johnson that summer. The Belle Plaine athlete, who had three years of professional baseball experience, signed with Albert Lea of the Southern Minny League. The city published its ďŹ nancial statement that revealed total expenditures in the general fund for the year at $30,111. The largest sum was $3,564 to Police Chief Luther Logeson for salary, use of car and vacation pay. Street Commissioner Ronald Meierbachtol received an annual salary of $2,720, and his helper, C.M. Leuwer, received $2,127. The total extra help for police was $750.

30-milligram prescription Adderall pills she purchased to a man at a Belle Plaine pharmacy June 15, 2016. The criminal complaint said she paid the $22 co-pay for the pills and agreed to sell them to him for $80. A pharmacy employee notiﬁed police of the sale in the parking lot of the store. Video surveillance captured the transaction. Police were able to “positively identify the female in the video surveillance” as Brooks from prior contacts, the complaint states. Police interviewed Brooks at her house, the complaint

states. It says Brooks had sold her prescription Adderall once previously to the man for his anxiety. Armed with a search warrant, police checked Brooks cell phone text messages June 30 and obtained text messages she and the man exchanged discussing the proposed sale of the prescription medication. The criminal complaint states at 2:22 p.m. on June 15, 2016, Brooks sent the man a text message. It says she wrote “a cop just showed up at my house. They have the whole (expletive deleted) thing on video.”

Devon Schultz, a senior center, averaged nine points and 11 rebounds per game. He also averaged four assists per game. Mayer Lutheran Kobey Woolhouse, a junior point guard, is a three-year varsity player. He has been a varsity starter since his sophomore year. Averaging 18.04 points per game, he had seven games of 28 or more points and a season-high of 37 against Jordan. Three times this season he scored over 30 points. Carter Clemensen, a senior guard, is a repeat All-Conference player. She was a constant for the team and was asked to wear a lot of hats, ranging from main ball handler to top defender. Sibley East Hannah Wentzlaff, a senior center, was the team leader on the ďŹ&#x201A;oor, and the coaches could not of asked for a better season from her. Participants are being sought for Belle Plaine native Tim Huberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s annual All-Star Little League and Advanced Baseball camps. The Little League Camp for ages 7-11 is set for June 13-14 (Tuesday and Wednesday) from 8:30 a.m. to noon. It will take place at the little league ďŹ elds behind ChatďŹ eld Elementary School. The cost is $75. The camp will focus on the basic fundamentals and players will participate in games and contests each day. The Advanced Camp for ages 12 and up will be held June 13-14 (Tuesday and Wednesday) from 1-5 p.m. at Tiger Park. The cost is $75. This camp will instruct on all aspects of baseball, including ďŹ elding, throwing, pitching, base running and hitting, the latter of which will be the primary focus. Huber, who played college baseball at Minnesota State University Mankato, is head coach at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D. In eight seasons as head baseball coach, Huber is at the top of the wins chart in Augustana University history. His teams have posted seven consecutive 30-win seasons. The last four years the program has been even more impressive, averaging 38 wins per year. For a second year in a row, Elizabeth Johnson is Belle Plaine’s lone representative on the All-Minnesota River Conference girls’ basketball team. Teammate Paige Narveson received honorable mention. The 2016-17 Most Valuable Player of the Year award goes to Bren Fox of MRC champion Norwood Young America. Gary Lembcke of NYA was selected by his peers as Coach of the Year. NYA and Jordan both had four players named to the team, followed by Mayer Lutheran with three and Tri-City United two. Belle Plaine and Sibley East both had one and Le SueurHenderson none. Johnson, a senior guard, is a repeat All-Conference player and four-year starter. She led the Tigers in scoring with 15.7 points per game and in assists with 5.1. She was the leader on the floor for Belle Plaine as she ran the offense and generally guarded the other team’s best player. A three-sport athlete, she will be attending MSU-Moorhead next year on a softball scholarship. She is the daughter of Jean and Eric Johnson. Norwood Young America Kali Grimm, a junior guard, was voted All-Conference for a fourth time. She led the Raiders in scoring, averaging over 17 points per game. She also led the team in three-point field goals, averaging over two a game, having made over 200 in her career. She has scored close to 1,600 points in her career. She was second on the team in assists. Fox, a junior center, is AllConference for a third time, as well as this year’s Minnesota River Conference MVP. She averaged over 15 points and 12 rebounds per game - shooting over 50 percent from the field. She also became Central’s ninth female player to pass 1,000 points for her career. She also broke the school record for career blocked shots with close to 300. Samantha Miller, a junior forward, is All-Conference for the first time. She averaged close to 11 points a game for the Raiders. Her field goal percentage was close to 50 percent for the season. She was Central’s second leading rebounder, averaging over six a game. Abby Mackenthun, a sophomore guard, was selected AllConference for a second time. She averaged over 10 points a game and led the team in assists

Matt Fink knows he may be caught in a numbers game, one that might prohibit him from playing with the same teammates he’s skated with for a decade. Fink, a freshman at Belle Plaine Junior-Senior High School, just finished a successful season with the Le SueurHenderson youth ice hockey association’s bantam B2 team. After winning the district playoffs, the team finished the season with a third-place showing in its regional playoffs earlier this month. Its overall record was 29-6. “This is the best year we’ve had,” Fink said. Now, because of his age, Fink’s options are to play high school ice hockey or junior gold, a league for senior high students who are not playing on a high school team. The junior gold team would be based out of Prior Lake. Fink hopes to be able to play with his buddies and longtime teammates playing for Le Sueur-Henderson-St. Peter. They’ve been his teammates since playing together as mini mites. Fink hopes that will continue for a cooperative high school team representing Le Sueur-Henderson/St. Peter/Le Center/Montgomery-Lonsdale. Whether he’ll be able to keep playing or will have to look for another option will depend on the combined enrollment of the largest school in the cooperative plus half the enrollment of the other schools in the cooperative. The cooperative needs to keep the total enrollment at no higher than 1,245 students or face the likelihood of being forced to move up from Class A to Class AA. The cooperative’s enrollment as of last year was 962. With St. Peter expected to be the largest member of the cooperative, Belle Plaine’s 457 students wouldn’t likely push the cooperative over 1,245 students. But the enrollments won’t be final until early next fall. Le Sueur-Henderson Activities Director Dave Swanberg expects the decision on Fink’s request

She scored the 1,000th point of her career this season. Madison Hucky, a senior wing, was a two-year starter and three-year letter winner. Her smooth shot and ability to score was a key to the team’s success. She averaged 15.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.0 steals per game this season. She had over 900 career points. Mya Chmielewski, a junior wing, has been a three-year starter for the Crusaders. Her defensive presence disrupted opponents on a nightly basis. She averaged 14.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 4.2 steals per game. She scored the 1,000th point of her career this season. Jordan Paige Johnson, a junior guard, averaged 13.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game. She shot 63 percent from the free throw line. She scored in double figures in 11 of 12 conference games. She could score both behind the threepoint line and off the dribble. Defensively, she is versatile in her ability to defend out on the perimeter and in the post. Brooke Sievers, a senior guard, averaged 12.0 points per game and led the Jaguars

in rebounds with 8.2 per game and assists with 3.8 per game. She rebounded very well from her guard position. Her ability to attack the basket offensively helped the Jaguars offense as she was able to score, draw fouls and make plays for her teammates. She also helped the team defensively, defending all five positions on the court. Ashley Freund, a senior wing, led the Jordan in scoring with 14.1 points per game. She also averaged 3.3 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game. She shot 74 percent from the free throw line. She could really stretch defenses with her ability to shoot from the perimeter. She averaged making just over three three-point baskets a game, including a season-high eight made three-point baskets in one conference game. Sidney Bendzick, a sophomore guard, averaged 10.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game. She shot 82 percent from the free throw line. She played very strong the last half of the season as she averaged 15.4 points in Jordan’s last five conference games. She also had a knack of hitting big shots throughout the season. Defensively, she made a difference with her ability to guard the ball out on the perimeter. Tri-City United Joslyn Vargo, a senior guard, led the Titans in scoring (20.4), steals (3.4) and rebounds (6.0) per game. She also led the team in free throw percentage, shooting 79 percent during the conference season. For her career, she leaves Tri-City United with

Gordon, 16, is currently the USASA regional champion in Boardercross Snowboarding and will next compete in the nationals in the Boardercross and Slopestyle disciplines at Copper Mountain, Colo., April 2-3. Fellow senior Matt Nelson was honorable mention. Jimmy Vollbrecht of MRC champion Jordan was selected as the conference’s Most Valuable Player of the Year, while his coach, Matt Urbanek, was named Coach of the Year. Jordan had four selections to the team and Sibley East three. Belle Plaine, Mayer Lutheran and Norwood Young America each had two, followed by TriCity United and Le Sueur-Henderson with one apiece. Curtiss, a senior captain and guard, led the Tigers in scoring with 20 points per game, as well as rebounds, assists and steals. He led by example and had the athleticism to guard big or small players. He accepted any role to help the team. He also volunteered his services at every youth tournament. He will be attending Augustana to play baseball. Herman, a senior captain and forward, averaged 12 points per game. He came back from a knee injury to help the team finish the season. He was one of the purest shooters on the team. He was a quiet leader who strived to win every contest. His passion for winning was contagious. He also volunteered for every youth tournament. Jordan Vollbrecht, a 6-8 senior center, averaged 24 points, nine rebounds and two blocked shots per game. He shot 55.4 percent from the field and passed the career 1,000-point mark early in the season. He had scored

He scored over 20 points in a game 17 times this season, including a high of 38 points against Mayer Lutheran. He was a three-year starter and letter winner who led the Hubmen in scoring, rebounding and blocks during both his junior and senior years. He is conference MVP this year. He has accepted a scholarship offer to play basketball at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Eric Tiedman, a 6-6 junior forward, averaged 17.2 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. He had a 54.9 field goal per-

centage. He is a very versatile player who is equally effective playing on the perimeter or in the post. He possesses an excellent all-around game, as he is also an outstanding rebounded and defender. He is a threeyear letter winner and two-year starter. Zach Kes, a 6-2 senior forward, averaged 5.1 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He hit 71.4 percent of his shots. He was routinely assigned to guard the highest-scoring perimeter player from opposing team. He frequently did the “little things” necessary for the Hubmen to win. He was a two-year letter winner and a two-year starter. Ryan Samuelson, a freshman

guard, averaged 9.3 points per game and shot 42.3 percent from three-point range. He made at least one three-point shot in 24 out of 25 games, and he averaged 2.25 made threepointers per MRC game. Sibley East Gavin Bates, a junior guard, set the school single-game scoring record for the Wolverines when he scored 48 points against Mayer Lutheran. He has had 1,000-plus career points and has started for three years. He averaged 24 points and nine rebounds per game this season.
