City OKs Satanic Temple’s Request for Memorial in Veterans Park Like ‘Joe,’ Temple’s Memorial Will Be in Limited Public Forum

Feeling it had little choice but to approve a request for a second memorial to veterans and those who died in service of their country, the City of Belle Plaine has approved an application from The Satanic Temple to place a monument in Veterans Park. In accordance with city ordinance the council approved earlier this year, the monument was approved administratively, shortly after the application was received Feb. 24. The temple’s monument will be placed within the limited public forum in Veterans Park, an area designated for free speech. The original non-city-placed monument to brought an array of items for disposal. After the council ordered it removed from a spot adjacent to the granite marker ‘Joe’ was replaced last month after the council OK’d the creation of the limited public forum area. City Administrator Mike Votca said the application from Salem, Mass.-based Reason Alliance, Satanic Temple’s fund-raising entity, left him little choice but to approve the monument because it met the criteria within the ordinance the city council approved. The temple’s monument is within the size requirements and is covered by the appropriate level of insurance, he said. Rejecting the application would have invited potentially expensive litigation, Votca said. No date has been set for the installation of the Satanic Tem-

Tuesday Morning Crash Closes Highway 169 A semi truck load of corn was spilled all over Highway 169 just north of Scott County Road 59 yesterday morning (May 2) around 8 a.m. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, preliminary crash information indicates the driver of a Chevy pickup truck, Justin Kubiczki of Elko, was heading south on Highway 169 and made a U-turn at County Road 59 (Delaware Avenue). The truck and a semi heading north on Highway 169 hauling a load of corn, crashed into each other. The driver of the semi, Grant Annexstad of St. Peter, Minn., suffered non-lifethreatening injuries, according to a State Patrol trooper on the scene. The road was expected to be reopened by 10:45 a.m.

BPHS Science Students Enjoying Benefits of Advanced Equipment Belle Plaine Senior High School science students have the opportunity to use and learn from equipment conducted with high-end equipment, tools the district couldn’t begin to afford but should help better prepare students for similar classes in college. Last week, the science department at the senior high received a bevy of high-tech equipment for temporary use. The equipment is worth about $50,000. How temporary? It goes back to the Mayo Clinic next week. The equipment includes micropipettes, a small device for measuring tiny amounts of fluids, amounts in the neighborhood of 1/1,000th of a milliliter. Other equipment the students have access to include a vortex mixer -- a simple device used commonly in laboratories to mix small vials of liquid -- ultraviolet light boxes, a microwave to heat and maintain temperatures, and several other pieces of equipment typically found in doctor’s labs and crimescene labs. The equipment also includes plenty of disposable equipment, like rubber gloves and other substances.

The equipment comes from the Mayo Clinic via the Southeast Service Cooperative. BPHS Science Teacher Rich Foust

CR 1 in Blakeley Among Scott County Road Pavement Projects

County Road 1 Closing Today for Culvert Fix

Scott County commissioners recently approved a series of road paving projects. They awarded a $6.82 million contract for paving work to Valley Paving of Shakopee. The list of projects the company will take on includes a 1.79-mile section of County Road 1 in Blakeley Township. The span runs from Highway 169 west 9,434 feet. The current pavement condition index (PCI) on the segment is 47 (of a possible 100). The roadway segment was overlaid in 1983 and 2002, and seal-coated in 1993.

The project is broken into two segments. Near Highway 169, 4½ inches of existing bituminous will be reclaimed and overlaid with 5½ inches of new blacktop. On the north end of the project, six inches of bituminous to the top of the aggregate base material will be removed. Once removed, the surface will be reconditioned and re-compacted and five new inches of bituminous pavement surface laid down. Before the work can begin on County Road 1, the county is closing the road beginning to-

About half of the 100 members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians attended a Founder’s Day Mass at Jessenland Catholic Church Saturday. The event included the traditional Founder’s Day Jig and a formal dinner with traditional Irish music. The Hibernians celebrate and maintain their Irish heritage. The club’s new inductees were honored and scholarships were awarded to college students.

Learning About Government Dozens of junior high students from across Scott County participated in the annual Scott County Youth in Government Day Friday (April 28) at the Government Center in Shakopee and the SCALE Regional Training Center in Sand Creek Township northeast of Jordan. Mike Briese, manager of the Regional Training Facility, helped Belle Plaine’s Carter Ess, KyLee Santovi and Andrew Smith fire fighting techniques at the practice tower. (Not pictured) Belle Plaine’s Ainsley Bennett, Kimberly Teal, Hannah Schwingler and Amara Smith participated in a session of the youth county board and a mock trial in the Scott County Justice Center.

BPHS Prom Saturday at MOA Dressed to the nines, Belle Plaine Senior High School students will be celebrating prom Saturday (May 6) with plenty of good music, food and fun at Mall of America. The day’s festivities begin at 4 p.m. with the grand march in the senior high school’s South gymnasium. People coming to watch grand march are asked to bring a non-perishable food item for the Belle Plaine Food Shelf. Just over 200 students are expected to attend prom this year. After couples enjoy dinner on their own, the dance will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Mall of America ballroom. It runs until 11 p.m. While at Mall of America, students will be able to enjoy rides at MOA’s Nickelodeon

Universe, a seven-acre indoor amusement park in the center of the mall. The park will be closed to the public and open to BPHS prom-goers and students from another small school, said Amie Hohenstein, a co-coordinator of BPHS’s prom with Sibel Dikmen. Nickelodean Universe will be open for rides until 1 a.m. Because of the travel time between MOA and Belle Plaine, the rides at Nickelodean Universe will replace the traditional post-prom party back at BPHS, Dikmen said. During the grand march, Dollars for Scholars will announce the winner of the vehicle fundraiser. Matt Saxe ChevroletBuick of Belle Plaine donated the car.

Maddy Siekmann, a Belle Plaine resident, recently returned from a five-day tour (April 19-23) of Washington, D.C. with classmates from World Learner School in Chaska. Siekmann is a seventh-grader at the charter school in Chaska. She was one of 36 students and five chaperones that participated in a variety of tours and experiences as part of their middle school trip. The group visited the National Zoo, a night view of monuments, Smithsonian museums, Ford’s Theater and Petersen House, Spy Museum, the Pentagon, the Holocaust Museum, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr. memorials, Mount Vernon, National Archives, Botanical Gardens, John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Hard Rock Café, White House photo stop, Newseum, and Union Station. Students also participated in various workshops throughout the trip. A highlight was at Arlington National Cemetery when WLS students sponsored and placed a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The National 4-H Youth Conference Center provided accommodations for the group as

well as coordinated the entire tour. The objectives of the trip include helping students appreciate America’s historical, political and cultural heritage, learn the fundamentals of federal government and discover the principals and responsibilities of American citizenship. The middle school trip is an annual trip to allow students an in-depth learning experience beyond the borders of Minnesota.

Deaths

Kenneth F. O’Brien

Kenneth Francis O’Brien, 81, of Belle Plaine passed away peacefully early in the morning on April 25, 2017. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, April 28 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. The Visitation was held at Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church from 4–8 p.m. on Thursday afternoon/evening and from 10–11 a.m. prior to Mass Friday morning. Kenneth was laid to rest at Sacred Heart cemetery after Mass. Kenneth was born on June 14, 1935 (Flag Day) to Richard and Mary Evelyn O’Brien. He was the ďŹ fth of eight children. Kenneth took an active role with the family farm at the young age of 14 years old. He had a passion for farming – and the uncanny ability to predict weather before it happened and know things that no book could teach. His sense of humor, unwavering work ethic, and strong moral character set an example for his children and all who knew him. Kenneth farmed with his family until his passing. In 1962, Kenneth met Judy Dohmen of New Trier, MN, at her cousin’s wedding. Judy was working at St. Joe’s Hospital in St. Paul at the time but quickly saw the allure of moving to the country. They dated for a year and were wed on June 29, 1963. Throughout the years they spent many weekends dancing at area polka fests. They had 53 wonderful years of marriage – always side by side – with a pinnacle moment being their 50th wedding celebration at the family farm, attended by family and many friends. Kenneth is survived by his wife, Judy; and his family, Ed and Suzanne (O’Brien) Fogarty and their children Alec, Morgan and Grace; Dave and Connie O’Brien and their children Quincy, Megan, Bridget and Mackenzie; Dan and Tara O’Brien and their children Connor and Cole; Paul and Colette O’Brien and their children Sam, Max and Ben; Sandy O’Brien and Gary O’Brien; siblings, Joanne (O’Brien) Sullivan, Helen (O’Brien) Connelly, Jim O’Brien, Richard and Darlene O’Brien, Mary Ann O’Brien and Kathy (O’Brien) Heil. Kenneth is preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Mary Evelyn O’Brien; and his brother, Pat.

Sibley East School District Looking at Technology Upgrades Sibley East School District is contemplating an array of new technology for use in its classrooms. The school board recently heard a report on proposed upgrades. Jeremy Wagner, the district’s technology director, is studying a proposal to place computers for teacher use in two dozen elementary school classrooms. MacBook Air, Mac Mini or Chromebook computers are under consideration, the Gaylord Hub recently reported. The district is also weighing placing either Promethean Boards or SMART panels in classrooms. The SMART panel costs $4,325 -- $425 more than the Promethean Board and there is

no annual licensing fee with the Promethean Board. The district is also weighing new devices for secondary teachers. Chromebooks and laptops are under consideration. The district is also considering new technology for secondary classrooms – either a Promethean Board, a SMART TV or an Epson projector. Sibley East is also contemplating replacing the iPads secondary students use with Chromebooks non-touch screens. Replacing 450 would cost just over $92,200. The acquisition of 360 iPads for elementary use is also under review. A three-year lease would cost about $149,900. You need it now more than ever

Two downtown Belle Plaine alleyways are plagued by water, especially during heavy rainfalls. The situation is so bad the city council is considering improvements that will help move water downstream. The question is, at what cost. Monday (May 1), the council discussed improvements to alleys No. 102 and 104. Alley No. 102 is a linear alley between State and Church streets and Chestnut and Meridian streets. Alley No. 104 is a T-shaped alley between Chestnut and Meridian streets and East Main and East Prairie streets. The city council accepted a preliminary report on the project and scheduled a public hearing on the project for June 5. The city aims to complete the project this fall. If not, it could reschedule the work for the 2018 season. The two alleyways were origi-

Science Students (continued from page 1) earned the right to receive use of the equipment after taking a week-long class, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, on the equipment and the lessons it can help teach several summers ago. “I’d really like to take a refresher class, learn how to use it better, Foust said.

DNA Matching

The equipment will allow science students to learn processes for items like matching deoxyribonucleic acid, otherwise known as DNA. The work the students, nearly all seniors, are doing in classes like Biology 105 and Human Anatomy includes creating DNA and matching a sample of DNA provided by the Mayo Clinic. Last Friday, students in human anatomy were mixing a gene from a jellyďŹ sh into E. coli bacteria. They wanted to see if the bacteria would glow as it does in a jellyďŹ sh. The school could purchase a kit for $200 to perform the same experience. The equipment from Mayo Clinic allows the students to enjoy the advanced lessons without the cost. The school’s only cost is staff time and transportation to pick up and return the equipment. The equipment gives students hands-on experience to experiments they wouldn’t be able to try without it. They were able to study electrophoresis, the movement of charged particles in a uid or gel under the inuence of an electric ďŹ eld. Another experiment would measure how cells react from a cold environment to great heat. The equipment makes a big difference in what students see. “It’s far more detailed, more realistic,â€? said Feliz Dikmen. The BPHS students were quick to see the beneďŹ ts of the equipment. The equipment will help students interested in health care of science majors when they are in college. “This will give us a better look at what college is like. I didn’t even know a micropipette existed,â€? said Nate Loegering. Many schools have similar pieces of equipment and, Foust said, the opportunity to use the items in high school will help them be better prepared. “It allows us to be more accurate with measurements,â€? said Tatum Pass. “This is more hands-on. It’s really a good opportunity.â€?

nally paved back in the early1970s, said City Engineer Joe Duncan of Bolton & Menk. Over time, their reverse crown has deteriorated and intermittent patching has minimized the two alleys’ ability to have storm water from heavy rains ow to the middle of the alley, away from buildings, and run off to catch basins. One downtown establishment has water running into it through a side doorway during especially heavy rainfalls. Alley No. 102 will be repaved. The city’s plan is to remove old, small pipes within Alley 104 and replace them with larger pipes. The city would also repave the alleys with the lower center to promote water moving away from buildings and owing to nearby catch basins. Property owners adjacent to the two alleys requested the improvements. Because the city has not yet sold the bonds to pay for the 2017 street improvement project, the alley work would be incorporated into the ongoing street improvement project, said Dawn Meyer, Belle Plaine’s ďŹ nance director. The cost of improving Alley No. 102 is estimated at $25,815. There are no plans for pipes for storm water management attached to the plan. Because it is a much larger area with new pipes to be installed, the cost of improving Alley No. 104 is much higher, $121,495. As-

sessments to beneďŹ ting property owners would help fund the improvement work. They would pay about 30 percent of the project cost. But before the council could schedule a public hearing on the project, Councilor Paul Chard raised concern over Duncan’s proposal that runoff from Alley No. 104 be directed through pipes under East Main Street to North Walnut Street and then downhill toward the ravine where the runoff ows into the river. The Minnesota Department of Transportation is considering reconstructing Highway 25 (Walnut Street) in 2022 or 2023, Duncan said. Chard said the water will backup, especially in heavy rainfalls, because the pipes under East Main Street are narrower than the 24-inch pipe Duncan is proposing for Alley No. 104. “This is a tough situation. We’re looking for an alternative that doesn’t break the bank,â€? Duncan said. Chard suggested revising the plan to direct some of the storm water runoff from Alley No. 104 toward Meridian Street and then south or north under Chestnut Street and on to the ravine at the north end of Chestnut Street. “I think we’re spending money that doesn’t ďŹ x the problem until later,â€? Chard said. Duncan plans to revisit the plan and look for options before the June 5 public hearing.

(continued from page 1) day (May 3) to repair a culvert. “We hope to be on County Road 1 in late-June the way the schedule looks now, said Jake Balk, Scott County’s highway construction manager. “And the work will take about a weekand-a-half. Scott County expected to begin its annual overlay program this week. The program will begin in Shakopee. The county also plans to repave County Road 11 in Helena Township. The 6.85-mile section of roadway runs from Highway 19 north to Highway 21. The current PCI on this segment is 55 of a possible 100. The roadway segment was overlaid in 1975 and 1992 and seal coated in 2000. The project includes removing six inches of

bituminous and replacing it with six inches of new bituminous. The other paving projects include a 3.28-mile span of County Road 8 in Cedar Lake Township, a 3.77-mile section of County Road 17 in Spring Lake Township, a 2.21-mile span of County Road 62 in Cedar Lake Township, 3.78 miles of County Road 68 in Credit River Township, and 1.87 miles of County Road 17 in Shakopee. The ďŹ nal cost of the projects is $6,821,723.75. Scott County has about $7.2 million budgeted for overlay work. The fund included $4 million from Scott County and $3.17 from county state aid. Valley Paving offered the lowest of ďŹ ve bids ranging from $6,821,723.75 to just under $7.3 million. - Insurance - For Price - For Coverage - At Claim Time

Thirty Years Ago This Week

The members of the Belle Plaine School Board were considering this week which of the six candidates to choose for the position of school district superintendent at their meeting Tuesday night. Saying that all six ďŹ nalists would be excellent choices, the board anticipates asking one or two candidates back for a second interview later this week. In other action, the school board also voted to sign two agreements. The ďŹ rst is an agreement with the special education co-op for leasing three rooms in the elementary school for the 1987-88 school year. Dr. John Bartholow indicated that the rooms are available for the year. The other agreement was with Mankato State University for the student teacher program. Bartholow recommended approval saying the agreement is a good one. The number of student teachers who come to Belle Plaine varies from year to year. Cynthia Dressen, who has served Belle Plaine as administrative assistant for the past 18 months, was named city administrator by the city council yesterday morning. She was selected from six ďŹ nalists for the job. Dressen has been performing the duties of both positions since the resignation of the former administrator, Tom Hallman, April 3. She will continue to do so until a new administrative assistant is hired. Dressen, a native of Fargo, N.D., received a bachelor’s degree in political science, public service tract, from Hamline University in St. Paul in 1985. She and her husband, Paul, an electrician for Nuessmeier Electric in Le Sueur have lived in the Belle Plaine area for the past 7½ years. They have four children: Lesley, 8; twins Benjamin and James, 4½; and Timmy, 2. Dressen plans to move into the position of administrator gradually at ďŹ rst, she said. “The ďŹ rst priority is getting the ofďŹ ce running smoothly. Once the ofďŹ ce is straight, I’d like to get into planning ahead as things arise and have a comprehensive plan, she said. When asked what’s ahead for Belle Plaine, she said the town should be prepared for devel-

opment. “Belle Plaine is going to grow and we need to lay the groundwork for economic development,â€? said Dressen. This can be done by completing the projects that are already in progress such as tax-increment ďŹ nancing, the Star Cities program and expanding the sewage lagoons in order to handle more people, more business and more industry, she said. Other issues the city has to deal with are street improvements, what to do with the old ďŹ re hall and updating the zoning, ood plain and water and sewer ordinances, said Dressen. Excited girls in long dresses and nervous guys in formal tuxes equal the prom. Belle Plaine High School’s prom, with the theme, “ ‘Til The Clock Strikes 12â€? is this Friday evening at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska. Pictures begin at 6 p.m. and social time lasts until 7. The Grand March will take place at 7 p.m. followed by the dinner around 7:30. Parents of students attending the prom are encouraged to watch the grand march at the country club at 7 p.m. Rich Clymer, assistant principal at Hastings High School, will be the guest speaker following the dinner. A slide show with around 185 slides of seniors participating in senior activities has been put together as a special tribute to the Class of 1987. The evening’s ďŹ nale will be the dance with entertainment provided by the popular Johnny Holm Band. Reine Hofmann, prom committee advisor, said that 100 couples have made reservations to attend the prom at Hazeltine. Following the prom, students will be traveling back to Belle Plaine High School for a postprom party. The doors will open at 12:30 a.m. and will close at 2 a.m. The party will last until 6 a.m. Organ music begins a church service and organ music ends a church service. For Loretta Schlicht, the music began when she started taking piano lessons at the age of 8. Now, after 40 years as organist to the church and the Lutheran Home, she has retired and an open house will be held this Sunday to honor her 40 years.

Loretta Manthe Schlict grew up on a farm near Pemberton, Minn. Her parents’ inuence played an important part in her musical background. Her mother played the piano and her father the trumpet. When Schlicht began taking piano lessons at age 8, the lessons cost 50 cents. When she was nine, she started taking trumpet lessons, too. “It was taken for granted we would take piano lessons. We weren’t asked if we wanted to or not,â€? said Schlicht. Her brother, Paul Manthe, remembers that Schlicht often used the excuse that she had to practice piano to get out of doing dishes. “And it worked,â€? said Schlicht.

A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. Help With Flags

Larry Ruehling, commander of the Belle Plaine Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post, said there isn’t much the city or supporters of ‘Joe’ can do about the Satanic Temple’s plans. He believes there is an element of publicity stunt to the organization’s application. “If they want a monument out there, maybe they can help contribute to putting up ags,â€? Ruehling said. Douglas Mesner, one of the founders of The Satanic Temple, previously said the organization was established not for devil worship but rather as “a national organization of tens of thousands of people seeking equality for all religious or nonreligious beliefs. “We have a lot of veterans within our ranks,â€? Mesner added. At Monday’s (May 1) City Council meeting, Councilor Theresa McDaniel, who voted for the limited public forum, said the administrative approval is “making the best of a bad situation.â€? She said the city can’t say no to the Satanic Temple. “It’s all or nothing.â€? Councilor Paul Chard, who opposed allowing any additional monuments, religious or otherwise, within Veterans Park said the people supporting the differing points of view must respect each other group’s rights within the limited public forum. He said the city can’t afford the litigation. Chard recalled Councilor Ben Stier asking local residents who wanted ‘Joe’ returned to the park if they could live with a non-Christian organization having a monument within the limited public forum. The answer, Chard said, was an unenthusiastic yes. If the temple’s monument is vandalized, Chard said he’d consider supporting removing all additional monuments besides the stone monument and ags. “They’re all going to play nice together or they won’t be there,â€? Chard said.

After One Week, Belle Plaine Shooters Off to Solid Start Despite lousy weather that has limited the team to one official round of shooting, the Belle Plaine High School trapshooting team had several shooters record solid scores in the opening round of competition April 24. In a group of 38 shooters, many without significant competition experience, the Tigers had eight boys hit over 40 of 50 clay targets and five girls hit over 30 targets at the first week’s competition. The competitions are virtual, with shooters firing at 50 targets and scores compared against scores from like-sized teams.

BPHS Boys Off to Solid Start The Belle Plaine High School boys’ golf team is off to a solid start, earning a fourth-place showing at the New Prague Invitational Friday (April 28). The Tigers finished the 18hole meet at Creeks Bend Golf Course with a team score of 357. Shakopee won the meet

BPHS’s top girls were Makayla Seifert with 32. Jocelyn Defauw and Lacy Walerius each hit 31 targets. Jenna Westin hit 25 targets during the first week’s competition. BPHS Coach Jack Schuneman said there are several shooters on the team that could earn a berth in the Minnesota State High School League state meet in June. Shooters can qualify during the regular season or via The Championship meet in Alexandria next month. Dahlke, a 2015 RVL All-Star, will again be spending most of the summer playing for a collegiate wood-bat league team, the Sioux Falls Gold of the Pioneer Collegiate Baseball League. Dahlke expects to be around here and there, and hopefully for the playoffs. While Cameron Klehr won’t return and veterans Travis Latzke and Tyler Hartman are retiring. Hartman might be available for emergency calls-of-duty – three new cubs have been added to the litter, all currently donning uniforms for Belle Plaine High School: Brody Curtiss, Nathan Herman and Jonathan Schmidt. This year’s schedule features 26 regular-season games, with 14 coming at home. Season tickets are $25 or $50 for the Dugout Club, which also includes a food and beverage item at each game – at the ticket gate or Brad’s Barber Shop. On a per-game basis, the cost is $4 for ages 18-64, $2 for ages 12-17 and 65-plus, and free for children 11-and-under. Season and walk-up tickets are a great way to support Tiger Baseball, and the 19th Annual Tigertown Classic, an eight-team invitational tournament June 9-10-11 will once again be a key fund-raiser. available revenue generated by enrollment. The tuition-free public school is continuing to work on further increasing its enrollment. The school should be paying the school $9,700 annually. It is paying about $8,000. “If they can pick up some students, there’s a chance we can pick up some money for the general (fund),” Kreger told the council at its April 25 meeting.

Earlier this year, the city through its financial consultant Abdo, Eick & Meyer (AEM) indicated Green Isle Community School was about $220,000 in arrears in its payments to the city. Mayor Joe Kreger raised concern that figure was inaccurate. After further review of the issue by AEM, the city says the amount the charter school owes the City of Green Isle is $189,846 following a closeddoor meeting between city council members, City Attorney Ross Arneson and charter school representatives. Kreger said the school is working on addressing the issue within

In other action at the April 25 meeting, the Green Isle City Council: • Paid bills totaling $14,425.22. • Heard a report on past-due utility bills. • Heard a report on time spent cutting grass and proposed curb and sidewalk repair projects. • Discussed maintenance of the NB Development lots. • Approved a request from Mayor Joe Kreger for funding improvements at Irish Yard. Councilors OK’d the expenditures based on the ballpark being city property and to have it prepared for the state tournament later this summer.

Tigers Welcome Irish, Arlington to Season’s Opening Home Stand by Brett Kruschke The Belle Plaine Tigers town team will open the 2017 campaign this weekend with a pair of home games. On Friday (May 5, 7:30 p.m.), the Green Isle Irish will visit Tiger Park followed by Sunday’s game against Arlington. It starts at 2 p.m. Friday’s game is Dollar Dog Night (Ruck’s hot dogs are $1 all night long). Sunday’s game is the first notch to register in the River Valley League standings. It will be Coborn’s Day. Canned goods will be collected for the Belle Plaine Food Shelf. Cash donations will also be accepted. Donation of either will enter you in a drawing for a Coborn’s gift card. The Tigers have endured some rough sledding the past couple summers, as the team has turned over and gotten very young. Last year was just the second season in the past 10 the Chatfielders didn’t qualify for the state tournament. That hasn’t hurt enthusiasm in the dugout, however, as manager Mike Schultz has assembled the largest roster short of the Vikings. The Tigers’ roster will include many returnees, including Jonny Vinkemeier, Johnny Egan, Derek Dahlke, Dylan Nyberg, Joe Hankins, Josh Terrio, Ben Wagner, Cameron Lark, Jared Miller, Matt Schultz, Mitchel Stier, Wes Sarsland, Luke Narveson, Ryan Bremseth-Vining, Aiden Ladd, Carsen Ladd, Zac Dahlke, Chase Emmers,

Kroells (right) and his teammates, Chris and Brett Pfarr of Le Sueur, talked with students about working hard in school and in activities. All three wrestlers are All-Americans for their academics as well as wrestling.

Belle Plaine’s Michael Kroells played air guitar during a song with kindergarten students during his visit to Chatfield Elementary School last week. Kroells and his teammates -- Chris and Brett Pfarr -- visited Janelle Laurent’s classroom after a successful season wrestling for the University of Minnesota.

Chatfield Teacher Brings in All-American Role Models Janelle Laurent is a kindergarten teacher at Chatfield Elementary and a huge University of Minnesota wrestling fan. This year, she once again used the Gophers’ matches as a teaching opportunity. Last Thursday (April 27), her students got to meet three of the wrestlers they’d been cheering for from afar. Laurent once again invited Belle Plaine’s Michael Kroells, a Gophers’ heavyweight, and the Pfarr brothers of Le Sueur, Brett and Chris, into her classroom to talk with students and enjoy some fun games, songs and work on a class project. All three Gophers are All-Americans, both on the mat and in the classroom. Brett Pfarr and Kroells are seniors. Kroells will begin work this fall on a masters/doctorate program in aerospace engineering at the University of Minnesota. Kroells, a former Scott West wrestling star, also plans to volunteer his time as an assistant wrestling coach at the ‘U.’ Laurent’s classroom at Chatfield has several posters of the Gophers wrestlers. During the wrestling season, Laurent and her students follow matches,

adding up points as Gophers’ wrestlers win them. Laurent’s students use their math skills to figure out the score and do not even realize they are doing math. “They chant the names of the wrestlers when I say who is next and they chant even more if that wrestler wins. If it has been a bit since I have told them about a meet they will ask, ‘When are you going to tell us how the Gophers are doing?’ ” she said. “My dad was a wrestler, and my mom’s brothers were wrestlers so I grew up attending Shakopee wrestling (where I am from) and the Gophers. When I was in high school, I was a wrestling statistician. I think that is really when I first fell in love with the sport.” Laurent uses her personal days to follow the U of M to national competition. Inviting Kroells and the Pfarr brothers into her classroom is a blend of reward for good work and a learning opportunity. The students get to meet the wrestlers they have been cheering for – especially Kroells, who went to kindergarten at Chatfield Elementary School -- and learn from their experiences.

Thanks for Supporting DFS Members of the Dollars for Scholars Committee recently presented Lisa Jamison, with her daughter, Ari, a check for $500 after the family’s name was drawn from a raffle for people who offered a larger amount during the DFS Phone-a-Thon. First-time DFS donors were also include din the raffle. The phone-a-thon raised over $18,580 for scholarships for BPHS students as they continue their post-secondary education. ‘I-Can Attitude’

“My students have learned about never giving up, trying your best, believing in yourself, working hard, and having an I-can attitude all through my different stories of the Gopher wrestlers,” she said. “The reallife stories really hit home for them. I am a big believer in the power of the I-can attitude. If you believe in yourself, you can go far with everything you do. My kids have learned that even if you try your best you are not always going to win, but if you did your best you can feel proud.” Though the three wrestlers tower over the kindergarten students, they were not afraid to play. Both Kroells and Brett Pfarr took turns playing air guitar like rock stars during a song. All three sat on the floor and donned crowns the students made. “I don’t think of myself as that big a deal,” Kroells said. “I used to be one of these little kids.” Kroells recalls Dan Zilverberg, a former youth wrestling coach taking him to Gopher wrestling matches at the U of M. Brett and Chris Pfarr remember meeting NCAA heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. The boys have a photo of themselves hanging off Lesnar’s massive biceps. “It’s really cool spending time here. I love it, the way they look up to you,” Brett Pfarr said. All three wrestlers thanked Laurent for her support and the invitations to visit with the children. They brought the students autographed posters, too. Now that Brett Pfarr and Kroells have graduated, Laurent said next year’s class will follow Chris Pfarr and his U of M teammates during his senior season. Chris said he’ll bring teammates to keep the tradition going. “They have always been so kind to bring each child signed posters and I know these are cherished by the kids,” Laurent said. “I am always amazed at how well they do with the kids. They do so well answering questions and putting things in kindergarten-friendly language.”

The Belle Plaine Visual Arts team earned six awards of excellence, 12 awards of superior and four of the 10 Judge’s Choice, Spotlight on the Arts Awards at the 2017 Section 2A Visual Arts Festival last Wednesday (April 26) at Sibley East. The Judge’s Choice, Spotlight on the Arts Awards goes to nine pieces in the competition. This year, 10 will go to state due to a tie in digital photography. The four Section 2A Judge’s Choice Spotlight on the Arts Award winners from Belle Plaine are: Hunter Meyer in painting, Hannah Burmeister in digital photography, Allison Hennes in computer-based drawing and Sheila Martin in printmaking. The MSHSL State Exhibit will be held on May 13 at the Perpich Center for Arts Education. Viewing of the show will be from 1 to 2 p.m., followed by the Welcome Ceremony, a presentation and the Awards Ceremony. The event is free and open to the public. The freshman fledglings on the team included Aidan Heidecker, Katie Piampiano and Anneka Sterk. Heidecker’s “Cracked Foundation,” a towering, tapering black base topped with a damaged house communicated the artist’s feelings about a loss he experienced during his childhood. Sterk’s worked earned an excellent rating in sculpture. Sterk earned two awards of excellence. In drawing, “Fearless,” a charcoal portrait of a lion with words inscribed into the mane to encourage the viewer to face their fears like a lion earned Sterk her first award. Her sculpture entry, “Walled Off,” a ceramic heart whose exterior walls transform into brick to protect its owner earned her a second award. “Charred Tracks,” a mono and ghost print combination submitted by Piampiano com-

municated that while the artist has experienced hard times, she knew she would move forward and be OK. This piece earned Piampiano a superior rating. Sophomores on the team, each with a year of experience, included Tatum Ackerman and Noah Dauwalter. Ackerman’s entry in 2D mixed media “Self-Healing,” was a ripped and stitched monoprint that addressed owning the responsibility to mend our own wounds. Ackerman earned an award of excellence on her piece. In painting, 16-year old Noah Dauwalter earned an excellent rating for “Two of a Kind,” an acrylic self-portrait with his dog of the same age. His second entry, “Egg-Night,” was a ceramic sculpture of a cracking egg turned nightlight. This piece earned Dauwalter a superior award. Meyer, Belle Plaine’s lone junior on the team and also a rookie, earned a superior on his acrylic painting, “Mirror of Her Own.” The composition includes his younger sister who closes her eyes to face the mirror but reflects a face with eyes wide open, addressing the facade that we often present in public.

Experienced Artists

Seniors on the team, all veterans of the festival, included Burmeister, Flaschenriem, Hennes and Martin. Burmeister’s large scale “Silhouettes of the Southwest,” a digital photograph taken in Arches National Park with people silhouetted in perfect rhythm in front of the western sky, earned the photographer a Superior Award. “In Memory Of…” an acrylic painting with bas relief cherry blossoms, earned Flaschenriem a superior award. The painting was dedicated to the artist’s grandmother who shared her love of Japan and cherry trees with her. “Hanami,” a silk painted umbrella with swirling blue clouds, purple mountains and pink cherry blossoms earned Flaschenriem an excellent rating. Hennes also had two entries at the festival. In computer-based

drawing, Her entry, “Handling Your Demon in Three Steps,” illustrated a person embracing their demon and earned the artist a superior award. Her “Power in Flight,” poster depicting a female aviator promoting women in aviation earned Hennes a second superior award. The original graphic design was based on the artist’s research of WW II propaganda posters. All five pieces entered by Martin were presented with superior awards. Her drawing entry, “We’re Still Standing,” addresses the Pulse nightclub shooting/ hate crime in 2016. The artist’s entry in sculpture, expressed that after this year’s election the human rights office may be “Closed.” “Nature’s Tranquility,” a highly detailed and textured water fountain with a fairy and woodland theme was Martin’s entry in ceramics. The photo silkscreen that included the artist’s self-portrait with a scientific formula in the background addressed the issue that “DNA is LGBTQIA.” Lastly, the 2D mixed media piece “Turmoil,” a photo silkscreen printed on a handmade gel skin addressed a personal medical issue of the artist. Martin’s goal this year was to break BPHS’s record for number of artworks that won a spot on the section team. The record, held by Savanna Schatz, was taking five pieces to sections. While Martin tied that record she inadvertently created a new record by entering nine pieces at the local competition. Tri-City United will be sending two artists to state, Samuel Barnack in sculpture and Mattie Hellerud in crafts. The remaining schools will each send one artist: Ellie Tiegs in drawing from Le Sueur-Henderson, Amber Rudenick in 2D mixed media from Nicollet, Rebekah King in digital photography from Sibley East and Emma Schwandt in ceramics from St. Clair. Additional schools participating in the event included Blue Earth, Buffalo Lake Hector, Comfrey, Glencoe-Silver Lake, Jordan, Maple River, Mountain Lake, St. Peter and United South Central.

Pioneer Power Swap Meets Draws a Crowd Thousands of people converged on the Pioneer Power grounds west of Le Sueur in Sharon Township for the annual spring swap meet Friday through Sunday (April 29-30). Everything from fresh fruit, new socks, old tools, machinery and collectibles was available. Le Sueur’s Tim Ziebarth visited with Orlynn Reinicke of Madison, S.D.
