Food Shelf Benefit Friday to Help Serve Growing Need Tickets Available at Coborn’s, B.P. Banks for Fund-raiser
While some might believe the reports of an improving economy has the Belle Plaine Food Shelf serving fewer people, volunteers at the downtown Belle Plaine facility know better. Last Wednesday, the food shelf’s manager noticed seeing far more people than they had previous weeks. Many of the
clients who were in for food were people the food shelf staff hasn’t seen in several months. “Something must have happened in their lives that they’re back,” said Pat Olhoff, the food shelf’s operations manager. More proof of the growing need people face is in the numbers. The food shelf is 11 percent over budget for this point of 2015. “Our numbers are growing.

Belle Plaine Gets Top Seed for State Tourney; Will Face Perham Thursday by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School volleyball team, champions of the Minnesota River Conference, added two more to its list of titles in 2015 when it swept Jordan in Thursday night’s Section 2A, North Subsection final and on Saturday ousted Kenyon-Wanamingo three sets to one in the section championship. Both matches were played
at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The Tigers, 29-3, have an opportunity to add one more championship to their vault when they compete in this week’s Minnesota State Class 2A Tournament at Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul. The state title is the only one that the Tigers have not been able to scratch off their list
through decades of program excellence. Belle Plaine is optimistic that this could be the year, so are other volleyball experts as they have granted the Tigers the No. 1 seed for the Class 2A tourney. The Tigers will face unseeded Perham in this Thursday’s 5 p.m. quarterfinals. The winner will meet the victor between No. 4 seed Stewartville and No. 5 Hill-Murray, a match that will be taking place on the other side of the curtain at the same time as Belle Plaine and Perham. In the lower bracket, the quar-
terfinals for which start at 7 p.m., it will be No. 2 seed Concordia Academy against unseeded Hermantown, and No. 3 Rocori taking on unseeded Morris Area/Chokio-Alberta. All quarterfinal winners will advance to Friday’s semifinals (see accompanying schedule). At a hearing in Scott County District Court Friday (Nov. 6) morning, Steven Scott Wightman waived his right to oppose extradition to Arizona. He remains in the Scott County Jail awaiting transportation back to Mesa.
Wightman’s decision to waive extradition made short work of the hearing, said Scott County Attorney Ron Hocevar. An attorney from his staff was prepared to use photographs and fingerprints to try and prove to the court Wightman is the man prosecutors and police in Mesa

U.S. Army veterans James Borgardt (left) and Mike Melo, friends and family are working to maintain programs that benefit veterans. Their late friend, Stacy Dvorak, ran “Charlie’s Hero Hunt and “Operation Puppies for Soldiers. Borgardt is a Belle Plaine native living in Henderson. Melo lives in Belle Plaine.
94-Year-Old Belle Plaine Man Recalls Days of Military Service Not abroad, but far from home After a fall induction ceremony at Fort Snelling, Allen was assigned to guard Japanese-American youth at Camp Savage in Savage, while they trained to serve as wartime interpreters. Come spring, Allen applied to military school in Fort Omaha, Neb., and completed 16 weeks of training there before joining the Military Police. His first assignment as an MP was guarding a key bridge that crossed the Columbia River near Longview, Wash. Meanwhile, a Japanese submarine surfaced and shelled a light plant on the mouth of the Columbia near Astoria, Ore., then disappeared into the ocean. Allen’s unit was put on alert because of its proximity. He wasn’t nervous, but “ready to go if Japanese troops materialized. They never did, and Allen moved on to guarding Portland and the surrounding towns. When a new War Relocation Authority camp opened at Tulelake, Calif., in May 1942, Allen was sent there. Roosevelt created the camps to detain persons of Japanese descent. “There were a lot of Japanese boys from there who fought for the U.S. Army, Allen said. Despite the hardships of war, life went on, and there were happy times. “I went home on furlough from Portland and got married to Lillian, and then I brought her back out to there with me, Allen said. The couple celebrated a September wedding in Young America, with a reception at Lillian’s sister’s home. Lillian, who had rarely traveled outside her hometown of Hamburg as a girl, went to Washington, Oregon and Pennsylvania with Allen during his service. Following training at Fort Lewis in Washington, Allen went to the East Coast and spent about a year transporting prisoners of war (POW). When the POW arrived on American soil from Europe and Asia, they were deloused and loaded on trains, Allen said. “We transferred them all over the United States, he said, adding he’s visited 41 states in his life. From Fort Devens, Mass., Allen was transferred to Philadelphia. It was during his tenure there he escorted FDR’s casket. After Victory in Europe Day arrived, major U.S. generals rode in victory parades in the U.S., Allen said. His unit was detailed to protect General Omar Bradley during the Returning Heroes Parade on June 4, 1945
in Philadelphia. Spectators once again lined the roads and school children waved American flags. Allen was also on duty when the president of the Philippines requested a tour of Independence Square in Philadelphia. “I was his special driver for his visit, along with my first sergeant, Allen said. Each new place the couple was stationed, Lillian found a different job. “I worked in two furniture factories, a suitcase factory and a place they made false teeth, said Lillian. “That was an experience. 70 years since war’s end In Philadelphia, Lillian became pregnant with Gary, the couple’s eldest son, and flew home to be with family. The war ended. Gary arrived. Allen was discharged. The year was 1946. “On March 10, the military gave me $100 and $7 for transportation and sent me home. I got home March 13, on my birthday. I went up to Hamburg to see my son. He was 3 months old, Allen said. “He’ll be 70 next year. That’s as long as the war’s been over. Allen helped his dad put in the spring crop, bought a local milk route and hauled milk and cream for 12 years. Then he went into commercial trucking and built a business up to five trucks that hauled cross-country, with Gary as his head man and Lillian doing bookwork and dispatching. When Allen sold that, he did a brief stint with Kraft foods. His knees started to give out, and he went back to driving truck, then got into the pallet business. His last gig was driving truck until his retirement in 1981. Now 94 years old, Allen still lives with Lillian in the Belle Plaine home they bought in 1956. Lillian is 93 and, other than her short stay at The Lutheran Home: Belle Plaine for a fractured hip last year, the pair remains independent. Gary cooks supper for them. Karen, their daughter, also lives in the area and is a frequent visitor – and their willing maid. Their younger son, Scott, lives in Wyoming. Though he never attended high school, Allen has received an education in his life and is the better for it. “I learned everything the hard way.

They’ll Continue ‘Charlie’s Hero Hunt,’ Dog Programs There was never any doubt in James Borgardt’s mind he’d continue the work his late friend did to assist veterans. Mike Melo was equally as convinced. The two Belle Plaine veterans are working to continue the programs for veterans Stacy Dvorak organized and operated with such apparent ease. Dvorak’s selfless work ended suddenly when she suffered a stroke and passed away last May. She was 41 years old. With the help of friends, family members and other vets, Borgardt and Melo are doing their best to keep “Charlie’s Hero Hunt and “Operation Puppies for Soldiers going strong. But they face a big obstacle trying to replicate the organization Dvorak maintained. Borgardt, Melo and the many people supporting the vets’ efforts are learning Dvorak was a tough act to follow. “Stacy put her entire life into it, Melo said. Much of the information associated with maintaining and promoting the two programs was in Dvorak’s head and not committed to writing or a computer memory. There was important information on a Web site page dedicated to Pheasants Forever and the hunt. Dvorak funded the site. Nobody seems to know the password. “That child had too much in her head, said Stacy’s mom, Mary, a Henderson area resident. The ninth “Charlie’s Hero Hunt is planned for March 26, 2016 at Caribou Gun Club near Le Sueur. The event includes a hunt and clay pigeon shoot for veterans. “It’s a day that brings
us all together, Borgardt said. The hunt began in 2006. It became “Charlie’s Hero Hunt, using the name of her mom’s dog, a hybrid hunting dog named “Charlie. “It was pretty much her baby. Everybody felt they were No. 1 that day, said Melo, a 10-year resident of Belle Plaine. The former U.S. Army sergeant served from December of 1997 through July of 2007. He was deployed in Iraq during 2003-‘04 and in Afghanistan in 2005-‘07. A former U.S. Army infantryman, Borgardt is a Belle Plaine native who lives near Henderson. He served from 2008 through 2014.
Money and Volunteers
The hero hunts take plenty of organization and funding to operate. Besides the dozens of volunteers involved, Mary Dvorak said the event costs about $12,000 to operate. Stacy was an excellent fund-raiser and had a network of volunteers available. Borgardt, Melo and others are working to raise the needed funding. The two men want the 2016 hunt to be up to the standards Stacy set. Mary Dvorak believes the efforts of Borgardt, Melo and the other volunteers will be more than acceptable. About
by Marie Zimmerman In 1945, Allen G. Peltz stood 100 feet from the casket of deceased President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in Washington, D.C. It was a long way from home for a farm boy born and raised in Belle Plaine during the depression. Peltz was drafted into the service in 1942 and later joined the 772nd MP (Military Police) Battalion, Company C, serving stateside during WWII. In 1945, the final year of the war, Roosevelt died suddenly on April 12 from a cerebral hemorrhage. The following day, spectators lined Washington’s sidewalks to bid him a final farewell. Allen and his fellow MP served as the president’s honorary guard. “We backed right up to the front door of the White House, Allen said. “We gave him a big parade that day. It just never ended. I was on the end of it, and I could never see the front. Only $5 during Depression Born March 13, 1921, at home, Allen arrived during the tail end of a fierce winter. Snow banks reached 12- to 14-feet high that year, and his dad had strung twine from the house to the barn so as not to get lost doing chores. Allen was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine, where he would be confirmed and remain a lifelong member. “My family and my church come first, said Allen, who grew up during the height of the Great Depression. “I remember my dad had $5 in his pocket and that was all the money he had until he hauled a load of livestock to South St. Paul. At age 10 or 11, Allen got to take his first trip to the stockyards with his father. On the way, they passed Eden Prairie, where there was no sign of the sprawling city and shopping center that would rise out of the farmland. “All there was was an oil station, Allen said. “Everywhere there were farms and whitefaced cows and calves. In 1938, Allen went to work for his uncle. Milking 28 to 29 cows by hand and doing chores, he put in 15-hour days for $20 a month — $30 in the summer. Meanwhile, at a small party at his sister’s place, Ms. Katie Hebeisen introduced Allen to Lillian, his future bride. Allen helped his dad farm for two years, then made butter at the Belle Plaine creamery until 1942, when he was called into military service during the height of WWII.

350 veterans have participated in the first eight hunts. “I think the hunt and being together will be more than enough. I know those boys are doing the best they can. I know they’re trying, but it’s very difficult to piece it all together, Mary Dvorak said. She started “Operation Puppies for Soldiers in 2008. Dogs through “Operation Puppies for Soldiers cost anywhere from $250 to $3,000 per dog. The cost depends on the breeder and the quality of the hunting dog. Borgardt raised money to help pay for the puppies. She worked to match up 18 dogs with former vets willing to take on hunting dogs. The dogs are 8 to 10 weeks old. “That way they can bond, Borgardt said. He received the 13th dog. Melo received the 18th dog. It was arranged just before Stacy died. Melo’s first dog, replaced “Brutus, a pit bull that died of bone cancer. “It was like a hole in your life. It was like losing your best friend, Melo said. “As soon as I got the puppy, it was like the hole was gone. It

Wightman (continued from page 1) say he is. With Wightman waiving opposition, the hearing took “a couple of minutes,” Hocevar said. “We had the paperwork ready to go. All it took was a few signatures in front of the judge,” he said. Police in Mesa believe Wightman killed a man, 52-year-old musician David Elbert Reed, in a parking lot outside a pub on an October evening in 2005. Wightman was arrested without incident at his home in Belle Plaine Sept. 30. Armed with warrants to arrest Wightman and search his house, police and Scott County Sheriff’s deputies say they found two shotguns, five assault rifles, and four handguns in Wightman’s house after taking him into custody. They also say they found 90 grams of marijuana in the house. A grand jury in Mesa indicted Wightman on murder charges. Listed as a fugitive from justice, he has been held in the Scott County Jail without bail.

They know the importance of the bond a dog and a veteran adjusting to life after deployment. Borgardt’s dog Rex “is like my kid. He’s always there. He’s spoiled rotten. We couldn’t be any closer. He knows when something is wrong, when you’re not happy.” They’re continuing to organize the hunt and work with breeders as interest in a dog arises. Borgardt said it will be difficult to fill the void Dvorak’s untimely passing created. But he and Melo are confident the organization and funding will come together. We have families that drop off, but they’re replaced by other families,” Ollhoff said. Ollhoff and the other volunteers at the Belle Plaine Food Shelf are hoping a successful annual benefit will help the operation’s coffers and restock shelves with the necessities area families need. The benefit will be held on Saturday (Nov. 14) at Borough Bowl in the party room, 235 Ash Street S. in Belle Plaine. The evening will feature a buffet dinner, silent and live auctions and raffle. A social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at Coborn’s Superstore, State Bank of Belle Plaine and CornerStone Bank
of Belle Plaine or from Ollhoff at 612-751-9923. The Belle Plaine Food Shelf has been open since July of 2011. Because of the donations of many people, the food shelf has assisted 614 new families, donating 395,613 pounds of food (or 316,490 meals for those in need). The food shelf has donated tens of thousands of pounds of food, given out hats and mittens, backpacks, calculators, and notebooks due to the generosity of the Belle Plaine community and other supporters of the Belle Plaine Food Shelf program. Thirty Years Ago This Week
died in St. Cloud, and quite a number of friends and relatives of the parents went to St. Cloud for the funeral. Scott and Le Sueur county commissioners held a joint meeting regarding the “judicial road,â€? Belle Plaine to St. Thomas. The Le Sueur County engineer was delegated to draw up the plans. Stewart Peterson, 48, lost his life in a ďŹ re at his home in Henderson. His bed caught ďŹ re from a cigarette he was smoking. John Nygren, longtime resident at Merriam, where he was a pumpman for the Omaha railroad, was killed near his home when hit by an auto. His remains were taken to Le Sueur for burial. There was a big turnout for the monthly meeting of the Belle Plaine Farmers Club. It was held at the new farm home of Mr. and Mrs. William Reinke.
Met Center Bound An excited group of Belle Plaine girls displayed the regional volleyball championship trophy in November of 1985. Pictured in the back row, from left, are Donna Brinton Hawkins, Kris Schmidt, Ann Klehr, Joanne Mabee, Ann Siegle, Tammy Fahey and Sherie Mueller. In the front row are Mitzi Westlund, Laurie Wolpern, Julie Halquist, Jean Schultz, Deb Zabel, Corinne Gransee and Tami KankelďŹ tz. The Tigers would play St. Michael-Albertville in the ďŹ rst round of the state tournament at the Met Center in Bloomington. The Belle Plaine Development Corporation decided to circulate petitions requesting the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission and the Central Telephone Company to install Metro Line telephone service to Belle Plaine. According to Chuck Perkins, a Development Corporation director, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and S.I.E.R.R.A.S Club members were being asked to help circulate the petitions. The presence of illegal drugs in Belle Plaine was apparently common knowledge down at the high school. Four of seven Belle Plaine High School seniors, who were interviewed at random, said they had personal knowledge of illegal drugs being sold and used in Belle Plaine, including marijuana, speed and cocaine. Belle Plaine’s new police chief, Steve Rost, said the department would be devoting more time under his administration to all types of investigations. “One thing I plan to work on is to really hit all kinds of investigations, and if it has to do with drugs, I will go as far as I can.â€? Rost, who was going on his sixth year with the BPPD, succeeded Joe Lenz, who resigned to go into the bar business. The Belle Plaine City Council passed a motion banning smoking in the city council chambers. No action was taken to designate an area where the public could smoke, although council members did talk about making smoking in the hallway permissible. An overhead wood stove was cited as the cause of an earlymorning ďŹ re that Thursday in Jordan that took the life an 18-month-old girl. The victim was identiďŹ ed as LeAnn Marie Ales, only daughter of Jim and Shirley Ales of Jordan. Jordan Police Chief Alvin Erickson said Mr. and Mrs. Ales woke about 4 a.m. and noticed ames licking beneath their closed bedroom door. The couple escaped through their bedroom window after vainly trying to make it through the aming inside of their home to rescue

Dear Editor, The members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit # 144 of Belle Plaine would like to express our sincere appreciation for the men and women who served in the United States Armed Forces. Thank you for serving this great country. Thank you for protecting us. Thank you for the security we have and feel here at home. We know you sacriďŹ ced much for your country and all of us. And though you may no longer wear the uniform, we know you’re always on call to serve and protect the freedom and security of the United States of America. We invite everyone to pause today on Veteran's Day(November 11th) to remember those who have fought for our freedoms. Thank you to all who have so bravely protected us. American Legion Auxiliary members have dedicated themselves for nearly a century to meeting the needs of our nation’s veterans, military and their families both here and abroad. They volunteer millions of hours yearly, with a value of nearly $2 billion. As part of the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization, Auxiliary volunteers across the country also step up to honor veterans and military through annual scholarships and with ALA Girls State programs, teaching high school juniors to be leaders grounded in patriotism and Americanism. ‘Noteables’ Preparing for Annual Holiday Concert Nov. 29 The Noteables, a 73-member community choir with 15 members from Belle Plaine, is preparing for its annual holiday concert set for the Sunday after Thanksgiving, Nov. 29, 4 p.m., at Le Sueur-Henderson High School. “Our after-Thanksgiving concerts are becoming a tradition with some families in the area, said Phyllis Fleischauer, the choir’s coordinator. “It’s a way for people to relax ahead of the upcoming crunch of Christmas activities. This year’s concert -- titled “Warming up to the Holidays -- features seasonal favorites like “The Christmas Waltz and “The Little Drummer Boy as well as some non-seasonal offerings like “Sophomoric Philosophy and “Come to Me Oh my Love. A favorite of the chorus and audiences alike is a piece by British composer/ conductor John Rutter. “What Sweeter Music is one of his
most popular pieces. Formed in 2006, The Noteables have grown from 15 members to over 70 and include the voices of Belle Plaine, Le Sueur, Henderson, Le Center, Jordan, St. Peter, New Prague and Edina residents. Director Gordon Gregersen, former Le Sueur/Henderson vocal music teacher, has been guiding and polishing the group in weekly rehearsals through the fall and hopes the audience will be pleased with the result. “We want to showcase our singers and help everyone round out their Thanksgiving weekend, he said. The concert is free, but donations are appreciated and help offset the costs of music and facility rental. Le Sueur/Henderson Middle/High School Auditorium at 901 Ferry Street E. in Le Sueur. Refreshments will be served after the concert.

Although Kris is happily under the illusion of his mistaken identity, not many other people are convinced. Doris Walker (Hannah Burmeister), a worker at Macy’s is
a practical, headstrong mother to a young girl named Susan (Kimberly Teal). She is not about let her daughter believe in such nonsensical ideas as a real Santa Claus. Susan was taught from a young age that facts and logic are more important than dreams and imagination. When Kris is mistakenly put into an asylum, a young lawyer named Fred Gayley (Jonah Meyer) offers to take Kris’s case to court to prove that he is in fact the one and only, Santa Claus. Will Susan find something to believe in? Is Kris Kringle the real Santa Claus? Join the cast of “Miracle on 34th Street as they perform this play and learn the truth about Kris Kringle.

(continued from page 1) first meeting in January. Skelley and Kahle replace directors Matt Lenz and Mike Ludvik, who did not to seek re-election. O’Brien filed for the election, her first bid after being appointed to serve earlier this year. Skelley and Kahle ran as write-in candidates. “I’m excited to work with the other school board members, Dr. Laager and the teachers and see where we can take the district over the next few years and maintain fiscal responsibility,â€? Skelley said. “There are a lot of things happening right now. I think the board is going to be able to deal with it in a favorable manner and I’m happy to be a part of it.â€? Skelley used signs and wordof-mouth to let people know she was seeking election. Kahle wrote a letter to the editor, used social media and word-ofmouth to spread the word. O’Brien said her efforts supporting Belle Plaine schools helped her win voter approval. “From serving on the PTO for several years to organizing fund-raising for Wolf Ridge and then my recent one-year term on the school board, I like being involved in our schools and in my kids education,â€? she said. Terry Kahle’s older brother, Todd, received 14 write-in votes. Election judges planned to take voter intent into consideration when counting and recounting ballots Tuesday night. They could not credit Terry Kahle with the votes Todd received because Todd Kahle is a resident of the Belle Plaine School District. Just under 8½ percent of the Belle Plaine School District’s 5,078 eligible voters participated in the election.

B.P. School Board Looking at More Pay for Substitute Teachers Belle Plaine School District Superintendent Ryan Laager’s job is to run the district on a day-to-day basis. In a pinch, he can teach an elementary school class. But that’s not how the school board wants Laager spending his workday. The Belle Plaine School District has been struggling to find enough qualified substitute teachers to fill in for regular teachers who take a day off or are out sick. Laager was pressed into service recently when a kindergarten teacher at Chatfield Elementary School needed a substitute teacher and one was not readily available. “Although I really enjoy teaching kindergarten, those kids had the worst kindergarten teacher in the state, Laager jokingly told the school board during a workshop Monday night. “But we sure had fun. There are times when finding qualified substitute teachers is so challenging regular full-time teachers are teaching addition-
al classes, using the time they intended for preparing for upcoming classes or for assisting students. “It’s a huge burden to ask someone to teach all day, Laager said. He believes Belle Plaine is not as attractive a site for potential qualified substitutes because other area districts pay their subs better. He is proposing a tiered system of compensation intended to make Belle Plaine schools more attractive. Belle Plaine currently pays substitutes $110 for a full day’s work, the same amount Jordan and Sibley East pay their subs. By comparison, Chaska-based Eastern Carver County pays its substitute teachers $125 per day. Shakopee pays $120 per day. Laager believes most of its potential substitute teachers come from the north and east of Belle Plaine. He is proposing a system where substitute teaches earn $110 a day for the first 10 days they work in Belle Plaine schools.
The proposal is for them to earn $115 a day for the 11th through 20th days and $125 a day for 21 days and beyond. Based on last year’s number of days worked by substitute teachers, Laager expects the proposal, if approved, to cost the district between $9,000 and $10,000 more than the $195,913 the district spent on substitute teachers during the 2014-15 school year. “Other districts in the area are having the same problem we are, he told the board. “It would make us regionally extremely competitively. There was no objection to the proposal from directors. Laager plans to approach Belle Plaine Education Association President Jerold Stauffacher to seek agreement on a memorandum of understanding on the proposal. The board will formally consider the proposal during its November business meeting Nov. 23.
Chaska School District Voters Back Referendum Questions Voters in the Chaska-based Eastern Carver County School District were in a giving mood last Tuesday (Nov. 3). They overwhelmingly approved school district referendum questions for a school bond and an increase in per-student funding. By more than a 2-to-1 margin, voters approved a $66.7 million bond that will pay for a new school, additional classrooms on existing schools, a new pool and sports dome. They also OK’d increasing the district’s excess operating levy from $379.19 to $829.19 per student. Both issues passed by huge margins in the City of Carver, Dahlgren and San Francisco townships and the rest of the district. The new school and classrooms are needed to handle anticipated growth. The district’s K-12 enrollment is expected to grow from 9,375 in 2014-15 to 9,836 by 2018-19. Much of the
growth will be in the elementary grades. The new elementary school will be in Carver. The approvals will come at a cost to taxpayers. The property tax increase on the Eastern Carver County School District’s share of the property tax bill, the Chaska Herald recently re-

It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. The expansion also includes a new administrative area, a new auxiliary gym and fitness area and expansion of the kitchen and loading dock areas. The district is expected to approve the final design plans in December. The project will go out for bids until mid-January. Construction is scheduled to begin after the bids are OK’d. INDEPENDENT The Le Sueur County Sheriff’s OfďŹ ce and Montgomery police Department are offering a $500 reward for credible information that assists them in their investigation into threats that put the Tri-City United School District on edge last week. TCU Superintendent Teri Preisler said certain members of the high school staff received threatening e-mails over the weekend. Tuesday (Oct. 27), she said the threats did not contain information on whether the threats would impact students or other staff. Police suspect a high school student sent the threatening e-mail.
TCU High School students were required to enter the high school through its main doors and have their backpacks and bags checked, the Montgomery Messenger recently reported. The checks were and will be conducted on a day-to-day basis, Preisler said. She assured parents by a written statement the school is safe and the school days proceeded as normal as possible. Parents were allowed to pull their students from school. However, students who left school last week were not allowed to return for after-school activities.

Scott County Pheasants Forever Receives Conservation Leader Award
The Scott Soil and Water Conservation District recently presented a “Conservation Leader Award to Scott County Pheasants Forever. The award was for an organization. The conservation district also honored honored area residents (Chris and Jim Schwingler of St. Lawrence Township), Livji and Doug Carlson of Sand Creek Township and the Prior Lake-Spring Lake Watershed District for their individual and group conservation efforts. The award to the county Pheasants Forever chapter was presented for Scott County Pheasants Forever’s decades of helping landowners plant food plots for pheasants and other wildlife in the area. This past year, farmers planted more than 250 acres of corn, soybeans, and sorghum, a 47 percent increase in areas in the past five years alone. The seed is purchased and donated by the
chapter, and Scott SWCD staff handles the distribution to landowners. The local chapter, chartered nationally in 1987, has also supported a number of countywide educational efforts, sponsoring native prairie workshops, the Conservation Leaders Program and Conservation Days. Known for its many programs for veterans, the Scott County Pheasants Forever’s most notable effort is the Operation Puppies for Soldiers. The chapter has donated 18 young dogs to returning veterans who enjoy hunting wildlife. This year was the seventh year of Charlie’s Heroes Hunt, a Pheasants Forever-sponsored hunt for up to 52 returning Minnesota veterans/hunters. The hunt includes breakfast, snacks, ammunition, guides, and dogs for the veterans. Through its Adopt a Soldier Program, individual members of
Pheasants Forever adopt deployed soldiers, communicating encouragement, sending care packages, and expressing their gratitude to the men and women serving our nation, often fellow hunters and outdoors enthusiasts themselves. Since 1991, the local chapter and its members have maintained five miles of roadway around Belle Plaine and Lydia through the Minnesota Adopt-A-Highway Program. In addition, Scott County Pheasants Forever members feed pheasants during the winter and have nine wildlife management areas totaling 5,524 acres that are open to the public for nature walks, wildlife viewing, and hunting. Even behind the scenes, the members help fund local trap-shooting teams and 4-H shooting sports, and most recently a native prairie planting at Shakopee High School and pheasant feed.

CenterPoint Energy has asked the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) to increase its rates for natural gas distribution service. Formal evidentiary hearings on CenterPoint Energy’s proposal start on Jan. 19, 2016, at the MPUC’s ofďŹ ces at 121 7th Place East, St. Paul. CenterPoint Energy requested the rate changes described in this notice. The MPUC may either grant or deny the requested changes, in whole or in part, and may grant a lesser or greater increase than that requested for any class or classes of service. The MPUC will likely make its decision on our rate request in the summer of 2016. If final rates are lower than interim rates, we will refund customers the difference with interest. If final rates are higher than interim rates, we will not charge customers the difference.

Emily Berger Finishes in Top Third at State Cross Country Meet Belle Plaine eighth-grader Emily Berger had a top-third finish at Saturday’s state Class 1A cross country meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield. Her time of 20:24 on the 5,000meter course was good for 54th best in a field of 175 racers. “Emily ran very well at the state meet,” said Tigers coach Steve Schroeder. “It was a beautiful day and she ran a very smart race, improving from 60th to 54th in the last 400 meters. She gained valuable experience on the big stage as an eighthgrader and hopefully will have another opportunity to use that experience at the state.” Grace Ping, a seventh-grader from Winona Cotter, was the
overall winner with a time of 17:52. Ping is credited with setting a world record when she was 10 years old after running a collegiate 5K in 18:02, reportedly the fastest time ever for a girl that age. Eighth-grader Morgan Richter of Breck was second Saturday in 18:42, followed by Hannah Truniger of Watertown-Mayer in 18:46. The highest-finishing Minnesota River Conference runner was sophomore Katelyn Barclay of Jordan with a 39th-place time of 20:06.
