B.P. Man Killed in Crash on County Road 40 Monday A Belle Plaine man, Tyler Scott Evans, was killed during a single-vehicle crash on County Road 40 in San Francisco Township Monday afternoon (Nov. 10). Carver County Sheriff’s deputies and Belle Plaine firefighters were called to the scene of the crash about five miles northeast of Belle Plaine on County Road 40 near Kelly Lake Road around 5:20 p.m. Evans, 32, was southbound on County Road 40 when his vehicle slid into the ditch. The road conditions in this area were icy due
to the snow. Evans died from injuries sustained after apparently losing control of his vehicle. He was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle, according to Carver County Sheriff Jim Olson. Rescue efforts were unsuccessful and Evans was pronounced deceased at the scene. Evans was the only occupant of the vehicle, Olson said. The Carver County Sheriff’s Office and Minnesota State Patrol are investigating the cause of the crash.

Scott County Still Weighing Fate of County Road 60 in Blakeley Twp.
While Scott County has committed to repairing county roads to the condition they were in before spring storms nearly five months ago, the future of County Road 60 from Highway 169 to Blakeley village remains an open question. The county, with funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will repair County Roads 1 (Union Trail) and 6 (also known as the Blakeley road). But Blakeley Township residents want County Road 60 repaired, too. The county is considering restoring County Road 60 on its current alignment at a cost of $2.2 million. Approximately $300,000 of the repairs is not eligible for FEMA funding, leaving the potential federal contribution at as much as $1.425 million. The county would be looking for state money to fill the unfunded gap. Commissioners discussed op-
tions during a workshop last Tuesday. Scott County is negotiating with FEMA on the amount of its contribution toward reconstruction of County Road 60 or building cul-desacs. The board will not address the issue again until those negotiations are complete, said Lisa Kohner, the county’s public affairs coordinator. The other option would be creating cul-de-sacs at a cost of $350,000. The cul-de-sacs on both sides of the area that washed out would allow vehicles to turn around. Before the June 19-20 storms that led to a washout of ravines along County Road 60, the county estimated about 350 vehicles a day use County Road 60. “That’s a lot of money for a road that serves only 350 cars a day,” said Commissioner Joe Wagner of Sand Creek Township. Commissioner Wagner be-
lieves the majority of commissioners will support whatever the staff recommendation is – reconstruction or cul-de-sacs. “I’m sure Lezlie Vermillion (the county’s director of Public Works) and Mitch Rasmussen (highway engineer) will go with whatever makes the most sense.” Robert Wagner, a member of the Blakeley Township Board of Supervisors, said township residents want the road restored and improved. In September, the county board accepted a bid from Chard Tiling & Excavating of Belle Plaine to repair storm-damaged sections of County Road 1 (Union Trail) in Blakeley Township. Chard won the contract with a bid of $2,389,895.70 – just below the engineer’s estimate of $2.4 million. Chard Tiling also won the bid for emergency patching of Belle Plaine veterans representing the American Legion, VFW and Sons of American Legion County Road 6 with a bid of retired the colors after a program at Oak Crest Elementary School yesterday morning (Veterans Day, Nov. 11). The program included student performances, essays on the importance of $46,751.50). veterans and the freedom they protect. Veterans in the audience were recognized. U.S. Army Lt. Col. Margaret McCue Morrison of Belle Plaine reminded students and the adults in attendance of the incalculable debt America owes its veterans for their service around the world. She told the veterans, “You are all ordinary people who accomplished extraordinary things, and you have the eternal gratitude of this great nation.”

Incumbents Retain Seats on City Council; B.P. Supports GOP A total of 1,879 people cast ballots at the Belle Plaine Government Center last Tuesday. That accounted for 53.34 percent of the city’s 3,523 registered voters, which was about three percentage points over the state average. Unofficial numbers from the secretary of state estimate Tuesday’s turnout at 50.31 percent, well below the projection of 55 to 60 percent. An estimated 1,985,747 Minnesotans voted out of 3,945,136 who are eligible. In the only contested race for a Belle Plaine city office, incumbents Paul Chard and Scott Schneider both gained four
more years on the city council with 988 and 982 votes, respectively. Belle Plaine Park Board Chair Chris Kehr will remain that as he finished with 847 votes. Mayor Mike Pingalore, who had no challengers, was easily reelected for another two years with 1,331 votes. There were 332 write-in votes. In the race for Scott County attorney, Belle Plaine cast 870 votes for winner Ron Hocevar and 785 votes for James Terwedo. Kevin Studnicka of Belle Plaine was reelected sheriff after receiving no opposition. He collected 1,532 votes in Belle
Plaine. There were 33 writeins. In “all” state and U.S. races, Belle Plaine voters, as well as the townships of Belle Plaine, Blakeley and St. Lawrence, sided with the Republican candidate (see accompanying tabulations). Still, in the state’s two biggest races, Gov. Mark Dayton (D) and U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D) were easily reelected.

Local Volunteers Sought for Homeless Shelter Program The faith communities of the Belle Plane area will be hosting homeless families from Scott and Carver County for the week beginning Dec. 7 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. According to volunteer Shannon Bergs, Families Moving Forward Southwest is a shelter program of Beacon Interfaith Collaborative who, working through local churches, provide shelter to families in crisis. During the week, the families are provided sleeping spaces on church property, evening meals and breakfast. Each day the families travel to the program center in Prior Lake, where they spend the day working with Beacon staff who help them look for housing, search
for jobs and address other issues contributing to the family being in crisis. Bergs stated that the Belle Plaine Fireman’s Relief Association and Women’s Auxiliary have agreed to play a significant role in the December effort. “It’s what they do,” said Bergs. “Every day they help people in crisis without ever asking who they are or how they got there.” Bergs added that they still need volunteers and are hopeful other local groups and organizations will join the faith communities in serving this very real need that exists in our area. Interested persons are urged to contact Bergs or any of the local churches for ways to become involved.

A Colorful Fund-raiser Members of the Belle Plaine High School cross country program experienced a very colorful day on Saturday as both the boys’ and girls’ teams and some 200 other people participated in the Run or Dye Tryin’ Color Run fund-raiser, which was headquartered at the school. Team members and other participants were bombarded with various colors of environmentally-friendly dyed cornstarch as they ran/walked through a color station at each kilometer (5Ks in all). Door prizes and other activities were also part of the event, which raised over $4,000, according to event-co-chair Renee Meuleners. She added that numerous businesses donated the door prizes.
National T.P. Day Pays Dividends for B.P. Food Shelf Did you know Aug. 26 was National Toilet Paper Day? Coborn’s Superstore in Belle Plaine used proceeds from toilet paper and paper towel sales during a portion of August to fund a donation of 280 pounds of paper products to the Belle Plaine Food Shelf. Coborn’s Store Manager Josh Selbrade (left) also arranged the donation of over $500 to the food shelf from one of Coborn’s paper product distributors. Pat Ollhoff (right), the food shelf’s facility manager, said paper products are in high demand this time of year.

But as great a challenge as preparing the costumes, fixing hair and makeup to be ready for the show time, selecting the play was a greater challenge, Jacobson said. Typically, the fall musical is decided before the end of the school year. Jacobson said the decision to go with “Beauty and the Beastâ€? wasn’t made until late-July. “Oklahomaâ€? and “Guys and Dollsâ€? were the other plays in the running. She had previously nixed “Guys and Dollsâ€? from the running because it doesn’t have enough parts for actresses. “We lose sleep over choosing the right play because we want to feature everybody’s talents,â€? she said. The cast for “Beauty and the Beastâ€? includes 11 seniors, all with significant stage experience. A handful of the upper- St. Joseph Catholic Church 213 South 6th Street classmen have been on stage Henderson, MN 56044 since junior high school, Jacob507-248-3550 son said. Sunday Mass: 8:00 a.m. “Beauty and the Beastâ€? is the right choice because of the depth of acting ability Belle St. Paul’s United Plaine has to offer. This week I want to share some news about a new program within the Scott County Library System. This came to me in the form of an email from Cindy Purser, the Associate Library Director of the Scott County libraries. Here is the information lifted directly from the e-mail. We have launched a new program on our Overdrive site that allows customers to purchase eBooks with a portion of the proceeds going to our library. It’s called the “WIN” program and is now on our Overdrive site. One of the main reasons we decided to go ahead with this feature is that it gives us access to the Simon & Schuster publishing company’s titles; the titles offered by Simon & Schuster include many best sellers at a great price. More titles by popular authors such as Mary Higgins Clark, Jodi Picoult, Jeffrey Deaver, David McCullough and many, many others are now available for our customers. We will be adding more of these titles to our collection soon. Please take a few minutes to look over the WIN program information on our Overdrive site:http://scott.lib.overdrive. com/9CECC701-663A-46EE-9F34-459A83855089/10/50/en/ WinAffiliate.htm. In addition to having a lot more content available, customers will have the opportunity to purchase an eBook for their personal use. The Library will receive a portion of the proceeds from the purchase. I hope that you take the time to look over the web site that Cindy provided. For those that already use eReaders (Nook, Kindle, iPad, Chromebook...), this offers a new interesting option. For those that have been considering trying eReaders, this might just provide the right incentive that you were looking for. If you have questions, please ask. I have not had time to do much with eReaders, so if I do not know the answer, I will put you in touch with somebody that does. The eReader and eBooks scene is evolving rapidly and many opportunities come with it. We have Storytime on Friday, November 14 at 10:30 a.m. This week’s theme is “Breakfast Bonanza”. The Belle Plaine Book Club is reading “Ordinary Grace” by William Kent Krueger. They will be meeting November 20, at 6 p.m. Note the time and day change from previous meetings. Maybe this will work into your schedule better. If you would like to join in the discussion, stop by the library to get a copy of the book . Our Scott County Library System web pages are meant to assist you in getting the most out of your library experience. Stop in or go online for information. The Scott County Library System has provided the county with a new tool to both help attract new businesses to the community and provide a benefit to existing businesses, home businesses, and start-up businesses. DemographicsNow: Business & People is an online business and residential reference tool providing detailed demographic data on more than 20 million active businesses, 12 million inactive businesses, and 206 million consumers. Designed with a user-friendly search, interactive mapping tools, and comprehensive data, this new resource makes it easy for all types of researchers to collect, analyze, and act upon information… all from a single location. This new tool is accessible via the library’s Web site (www. scottlib.org) under the ‘research’ tab. Anyone with a valid Scott County Library card can access it from anywhere using a computer, tablet, or Smartphone. DemographicsNow: Business & People offers demographic information on any U.S. geography, including informa-
tion on income, housing, race, age, education, retail spending, and more. It also allows users to compare multiple geographies and examine data on a specific county, zip code, congressional district, and more. A unique mapping tool within the resource also allows users to map their results, create custom geographies and view demographic variables in thematic coloring scales. The ‘business’ tab allows users to search by company name, business type, number of employees, and other factors, while the ‘households’ tab contains data on more than 206 million U.S. residents (approximately 135 million households) and enables users to search by name, address, or a variety of U.S. Census data averages. Once the necessary data is collected, users can export the information into Word, .pdf, or Excel reports for further analysis and application. DemographicsNow: Business & People will serve a variety of needs and could be used by all types of users – from small business owners, entrepreneurs, and sales people to job-seekers,
students, community leaders, and non-profit organizations. Entrepreneurs can use it to create a business plan or to do a location analysis. Owners of small businesses can rely on it to identify competitors in their area or help relocate their business. Marketing and sales people can develop targeted, accurate customer leads and mailing lists for campaigns. Students can research companies and regions for assignments and job-seekers can find information on a company before a job interview. “Purchasing access to this system is just one more way that Scott County is leading-edge in economic development,” said Stacy Crakes, Scott County’s First Stop Shop business development manager. “In fact, Scott County is the only county in the state currently offering access to this program through the library system. And the decision to move forward with this came out of collaboration among the libraries, the First Stop Shop, our cities, and their chambers.”

BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA
Thirty Years Ago This Week
The $300 bond issue for a new Belle Plaine Fire Hall passed in that year’s election by a count of 697-657. Fran Schuman was reelected mayor over Councilman Roger Martin 752599. David Edberg was the top vote-getter for the council seat, followed by Ivan Otto. They were both elected and would be replacing Martin and Gary Bigaouette, the latter of whom did not file for reelection. There were a total of 1,385 ballots cast in Belle Plaine. Representative Bob Jensen was edged out in the race for state representative in District 35B, which included Belle Plaine, by Republican Tom Rees. The difference was 467 votes. Rees had previously served as Belle Plaine’s representative from 1980 through 1982. An official of the company bringing cable television to Belle Plaine said that the firm would begin hooking up subscribers to the service before Christmas. Dow Sat was offering subscribers two tiers of service and in addition access to pay-TV viewing, such as Home Box Office, Showtime and the Disney Channel. The lower tier of service would cost $6.75 a month for access to 17 channels. Premium service, or the pay-TV channels, would cost an additional $9.95 a month. Belle Plaine had a number of items of interest going on that week, including two grand openings – Hutton’s Cafe on Saturday and Bob Denny’s Central Tire II Thursday and Friday. D & R was holding its fifth anniversary party with live music both Friday and Saturday, and the Belle Plaine Fire Department was holding a Poultry Social at Jerry’s Bar. Scott County joined with the six other metropolitan area counties in a dispute with the state over control of hazardous waste producers. The counties wanted to make their regulations stricter than current state standards. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency was saying they could not. Construction was underway at a feverish pace on the $44.9 million Canterbury Downs race track complex in Shakopee. A festive Community Thanksgiving Service, sponsored by the Belle Plaine Ministerium, would be held at the high school auditorium at 9 a.m. Thanksgiving Day. Chamber of Commerce members, along with many volunteers, were needed that coming Sunday (Nov. 18) for the annual task of putting up Belle Plaine’s holiday decorations. The committee chairman was Bill Steffen. The Belle Plaine High School volleyball team, champions of District 13, lost to Cosmos in the Region 4A Tournament. The Tigers then lost to Gaylord in the consolation round. Belle Plaine finished the season with a record of 21-6, the best in school history up to that point. It was also the furthest the Tigers had ever gone in the postseason. Don Edberg, formerly of Belle Plaine who moved to Chaska, took second place in the state

Although the pay was very low, there were eight applicants for the job of hauling the mail from the depot to the post office. The builders of the new borough hall completed their contract. Citizens complained that the plans should have been for a longer building. Bills in the amount of $823 were presented the Scott County Board for expenses incurred in establishing a smallpox camp here for its single patient. Tom Bowser of near Assumption went deer hunting in Todd County and shipped two deer home. The rumor spread that they were from a herd seen near Washington Lake, and a hunting party was quickly organized. The rumor was started by someone as a joke.

To accommodate a neighbor who asked him to help cut down a tree, August Edberg, 72, got out of his car to help. As the tree fell it struck him and he was instantly killed. For 10 years he had been in the employ of the railroad company at Belle Plaine, moving to Carver two years before his death. DOT’s south metro engineer, said the volume of traffic on Highway 41 would pick up when construction work closes Highway 5 between Victoria and Waconia, creating a detour through downtown Chaska on Highway 41. Council members complained over the increasing traffic volumes and the long delays they create at semaphores. Langenbach said the delays should be shorter than 70 seconds. Council members said they’ve seen drivers ignore the lights out of frustration by the long delays. Mn/DOT’s only plans for improving Highway 41 involves repaving projects and the addition of turn lanes. Carver County is seeking federal funding to exandHighway41 to four lanes north of Pioneer Trail. Mn/ DOT doesn’t have the money to expand Highway 41, Langenbach said.

Like communities across the nation, Belle Plaine celebrated the end of World War I on Nov. 11, 1918, which has become known as Veterans Day (formerly Armistice Day). Both photos were taken in downtown Belle Plaine. The main event of the celebration was a parade, for which people lined the streets, including in front of what is now the Canopy Group building at the corner by: Loni Graham of Main and Meridian streets. It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. Southern Valley Alliance Seeking ‘Gifts of Hope’ for Holidays For the families Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women serves, the holiday season can be a difficult time. The Belle Plaine-based is seeking donations to its Gifts of Hope program to make the season brighter for people in need. For example, gift cards to like Wal-Mart, Target and other retailers can help moms and families with the essentials needed for everyday life and gifts, too. SVABW is also suggesting people consider donating ev-
eryday essentials for children ages infant to 3 years, 4-7 and 8-12 because women may leave their house without the time to pack all the items needed, like toys, games and movies. Donations for the alliance’s Gifts of Hope program will be accepted through Dec. 8. For more information, or suggestions on what makes a good donation, call Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women at 952-873-4214.

Facing a $3 million price tag for replacement of equipment, Chaska is considering ending its wireless Internet service to the community known as Chaska.net Next summer, without the upgrade, the city will lose technical support for the equipment serving the 10-year-old wireless Internet service available to residential customers for $19.99 per month. The city, however, will retain its fiber-based Internet service, the Chaska Herald recently reported. At its peak, Chaska.net reached more than 2,100 customers –

Jordan Investing in Drawing New Businesses to Town Jordan city leaders want more businesses and housing developments deemed a benefit to the community. The city is planning to put money behind the effort. Jordan is budgeting $155,128 in 2015 for economic development – efforts to attract businesses and residential developments that bring value to the community. The Jordan EDA fund balance stood at $457,662 as of June 30, the Jordan Independent recently reported. The city will approve its final
levies and budgets in December. Jordan’s EDA has helped businesses with façade loans, a Jobs-for-Fees program where businesses that bring jobs to the community get a break on some city fees. The program has already helped produce 20 jobs in Jordan with another 30 possible. Councilor Joe Thill said the work Jordan’s EDA performs bringing jobs to the city is a long process with plenty of work behind the scenes.

Chaska.net currently serves about 1,600 customers. A decision on the utility’s future is expected at the Chaska City Council’s Nov. 17 meeting. “Unless there’s something we’re not thinking of, I don’t see why we would (stay in),” said Matt Podhradsky, the city’s administrator. If the council agrees the time has come to eliminate the service, Podhradsky believes Chaska.net has filled its original mission of providing affordable Internet service until the private sector comes to the area.

about one-fourth of the households in the city. With the likely decision looming, the city is no longer actively seeking new subscribers. People who ask the city about the service are being softly informed about Chaska. net’s iffy future. The city has sent out feelers to businesses that may want to take over the service. Chaska. net has demonstrated the ability to cover its operational costs. But keeping up with the big Internet providers requires an investment in equipment and infrastructure.

Tigers Place Three Players on All-MRC Football Team
Belle Plaine High School’s representatives on the 2014 All-Minnesota River Conference football team are Luke Narveson, Ben Stier and Alec Selly. MRC coaches selected Jordan’s Andrew Fogarty as the Offensive Back of the Year, Norwood Young America’s Tanner Hoen as Offensive Lineman of the Year, Watertown-Mayer’s Nate Zellmann as Defensive Back of the Year, Tri-City United’s Alex Burns and Watertown-Mayer’s Jack Nolan as Defensive Linemen of the Year, and Lukas Bullert of Sibley East as Special Teams Player of the Year. Watertown-Mayer had six players named All-Conference, followed by Tri-City United (5), Norwood Young America (4), Jordan (4), Belle Plaine (3), Le Sueur-Henderson (3), Mayer Lutheran (2) and Sibley East (2). Narveson, a junior quarterback, defensive back and punter, earned All-Conference for the third consecutive year. He is a true dual threat quarterback as he threw for over 1,400 yards and 16 touchdowns, as well as rushing for over 680 yards and another 13 touchdowns. He is an excellent teammate who truly loves the game. He is the son of Brad and Patty Narveson, and Robyn Narveson Stier, a senior running back and linebacker, earned All-Conference for the third consecutive season. He was a steady force in the backfield and has a high football IQ. He was a hard runner who also excelled as a blocker. Defensively, he was a coach on the field. He understood the defense as well as anyone and was able to quickly adjust other players. He was the leading tackler and a very passionate football player who will be hard to replace. He is the son of Brian Stier and Precious Stier. Selly, a senior offensive lineman and linebacker, earned his first selection to the All-Conference team. He was an anchor on the offensive line, regularly playing against players many pounds bigger than him. He played with passion and determination and graded out as one of the top lineman on the team and conference. Defensively, he played outside linebacker and
was one of the top tacklers. He is a great example for future Tigers as he was consistently the hardest worker in the weight room in the offseason, which helped make him into the AllConference player he became. He is the son of Rob and Shelly Selly. Watertown-Mayer Nick Parker, a senior fullback, linebacker and punter, was a “Jack of all trades,” contributing in almost every aspect for his team – from offense to defense to special teams. His versatility was an integral part of the Royals’ success. Jordan Berrios, a senior running back and linebacker, was an important cog as the Royals drove to the MRC championship. He averaged over 7 yds/ carry, rushed for 801 yards and scored 12 rushing touchdowns. Brett Johnson, a senior quarterback, defensive back and punter, led the team in rushing with 868 yards, averaging 8 yds/carry and rushing for 14 touchdowns. Jack Nolan, a senior tight end and defensive end, was a dominant force on both sides of the ball. He led the team in receiving with eight catches for 166 yards and one touchdown. He had 31 tackles and led the team with seven sacks. Nate Zellmann, a senior offensive lineman and linebacker, was second on the Royals in tackles with 70. He was known for his big hits and his toughness and was a great leader throughout the season. Andrew Ziegenhagen, a senior offensive lineman and linebacker, led the Royals in tackles for the second consecutive year with 91. He patrolled the Royals’ defense sideline to sideline and provided great leadership. Norwood Young America Isaac Hormann, a senior quarterback and safety, accounted for over 1,000 total yards and 23 touchdowns. He was a dynamic two-way player and captain at Central who in his career had over 4,000 all-purpose yards and over 40 touchdowns. Noah Peterson, a senior running back and defensive back, received All-Conference recognition for the third time and broke the 3,300-yard barrier for career yards. He accounted for double-digit touchdowns this
season and scored over 35 in his career. Zach Storms, a senior fullback and linebacker, had a terrific final season at Central. His impact as a runner and blocking back helped jump-start the offense and he was a productive defender and pass rusher as well. Tanner Hoen, a senior offensive and defensive lineman, paved the way for over 2,700 rushing yards this year. Nate Nemitz, a senior offensive and defensive lineman, established himself as one of the MRC’s best offensive and defensive linemen. His final year contributions as a player and team captain were key to Central’s successful season. Tri-City United Jamison Beulke, a senior wide receiver and defensive back, led the Titans in receptions, kickoff returns, punt returns and interceptions. Gabino Rodriguez, a senior fullback and linebacker, was a very tough physical player on both sides of the ball. On offense, he was the Titans’ lead blocker from his fullback position and was the leading tackler on defense. Jordan Bartholomew, a junior offensive and defensive lineman, plays with a lot of intensity on both sides of the ball. He put a lot of pressure on QBs from his defensive end position. He was one of the key blockers in the Titan running game on offense. Aaron Chimal, a junior running back and linebacker, led the team in rushing with 1,005 yards and 12 touchdowns in the seven conference games. He is a very elusive runner who also has the ability to run with power. He also started at outside linebacker. Alex Burns, a senior offensive and defensive lineman, was a big physical dominating type of player. The team often ran behind him in the offensive power running game. He usually drew double teams when playing defensive tackle, where he helped to control the line of scrimmage. Jordan Andrew Fogarty, a senior running back and linebacker, was an integral component of the Hubmen’s offense, defense and special teams. He had

Youth Traveling Basketball Tryouts This Saturday The Belle Plaine Basketball Association is once again sponsoring traveling basketball teams for boys and girls in fifth and sixth grade. These teams will generally practice two times a week and play in four to five weekend tournaments. The cost of these teams will be $125 for fifth grade and $150 for sixth grade. You will also be required to provide a second check of $120 for volunteer work. Your volunteer check will not be cashed unless you do not volunteer during BPBA sponsored activities. Both payments are due at the tryouts. To keep costs down, each family is being asked to volunteer six hours of time per player. These volunteer hours will most
likely be served during one of our home tournaments (collecting gate fees, working concession stand, clocks, scorebooks and possibly halftime events of varsity games, etc. Boys’ tryouts will take place Saturday, Nov. 15 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the high school south gym. Girls’ tryouts will be held the same day and place from 1-3 p.m. If you are not able to attend the tryout, notify your respective coach or the Belle Plaine Basketball Association 48 hours prior to your child’s tryout date to make other arrangements. Each player will be judged on a variety of basketball skills and performance in a scrimmage.

But this time the Tigers were able to pull out the victory with a hard-fought 1513 triumph in the fifth set. Belle Plaine led 13-8 before the Irish tied it with five straight points. The Tigers, who were without Hentges most of the match due to an injury, then took advantage of a couple of errors by Maple Lake to claim third place. Belle Plaine setter Danielle Taylor, a sophomore, had 150 assists at last week’s state tournament.
Amelia Kahle, left, and McKenzie Koepp were among the Tigers trying to make things as difficult as possible for Maple Lake attackers during Saturday’s match.
The Tigers’ Kaylee Hentges, a junior, was injured in the early going of Saturday’s match against Maple Lake and had to watch the rest of the contest from the bench. She had 24 kills in the team’s first two matches of the tournament.
A state tournament is often a roller coaster of emotion and the BPHS volleyball team experienced that this past weekend at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Pictured above are the Tigers walking off the court seconds after their five-set heartbreaking loss to Marshall Friday night. About eighteen hours later (below), the Tigers were jubilant again as they accepted their third-place trophy following Saturday afternoon’s win over Maple Lake.

B.P.’s Clausen Earns Lead Role in MSU, Mankato’s ‘Our Town’ Belle Plaine High School alum Mikhayla Clausen plays the role of “Lady in the Box” in The Minnesota State University, Mankato Department of Theatre & Dance’s presentation of Our Town. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 13-15 (Thursday-Friday), and 2 p.m. Nov. 15 & 16 (Saturday-Sunday), in the Ted Paul Theatre of the Earley Center for Performing Arts. Our Town is Thornton Wilder’s quintessential story about an American town. Narrated by a stage manager and performed with minimal props and sets. Audiences follow the Webb and Gibbs families as their children fall in love, marry and, eventually—in one of the most famous scenes in American theatre—die. Minnesota State Mankato previously presented “Our Town” in 1950 and 1993. Clausen is a freshman Theatre
Generalist who made her Minnesota State Mankato debut as “Lady with Cane” in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. At Belle Plaine High School she appeared as “lead chorus/ narrator” in A Christmas Carol, “Wife” in The Drowsy Professor, “Mrs. Paroo” in The Music Man and “Motherly Mother” in Ridiculosis by Proxy, and at Project Opera in Minneapolis she was “Letterbox” in Griffelkin. She earned a 2014-15 Theatre & Dance Freshman Talent Grant. “I’m honored to be doing my second show here at Minnesota State University, Mankato. I’ve been seeing shows at MSU since I was a little girl and thinking ‘some day that’s going to be me.’ It’s been a dream of mine to perform on the stages here, and now that dream is
coming true,” she said. “The theatre program at MSU is outstanding and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.” Third-year MFA Directing candidate Matthew Caron, who previously has directed “A Plague of Angels,” “Sky Girls”, directs this production and this season’s “A Piece of My Heart” in the Studio. He also directed “Boeing Boeing” in Highland Summer Theatre 2014. Individual tickets for “Our Town” are $16 regular, $14 for senior citizens, youth 16 and under and groups of 15 or more, and $11 for current Minnesota State students. They may be purchased online at MSUTheatre.com, or by calling or stopping by the theatre & dance box office in the lobby of the Earley Center for Performing Arts from 4-6 p.m., Monday-Friday. Program Aims to Show American Troops Overseas ‘Some Love’
American soldiers stationed in Kuwait, Afghanistan and other hot spots around the world ideally have everything they need to do the job they were sent to do. But a Belle Plaine man wants to make sure they know people back home appreciate their service. Pastor Mike Finch of Discovery Assembly of God Church is backing a program to encourage and show appreciation for a group of service women and men deployed in Kuwait. They are members of the U.S. Air Force Reserves 934th Airlift Wing – a group known as The Flying Vikings. Finch is the heart and soul of “Operation Show ‘Em Some Love.” His proposal is for people to pickup a medium-sized flat rate box from the Post Office. They should pack it threequarters full of comfort items soldiers don’t have readily available to them – toothpaste, foot powder, body wash, sun block, jellybeans, sunflower seeds, chewing gum, nuts, cookies, licorice, granola bars, magazines, books, stationary, ink pens, and AA- or D-sized batteries. People should not send pork products. Any magazines sent should be family friendly. The boxes, along with $13 per
box for postage, can be dropped off at Stier Transportation, 406 Meridian Street S. by Wednesday, Nov. 26. The boxes will be shipped to the 934th Airlift Wing in Kuwait in time for the holidays. One of the members of the 934th is Sgt. Tyler Koonst of Belle Plaine, the son of Mary Ann and Jim Koonst and a 2006 graduate of Belle Plaine High School. He was deployed Sept. 9 and expects to be home in late-January. Finch works part-time for Tyler’s father, Jim Koonst, one of the owners of Stier Transportation. “I’ve just always had a passion for helping out the military,” Finch said. “This is a tangible expression that people back here care about them and haven’t forgotten them.” Finch is concerned that too many people have forgotten the sacrifices soldiers are making. He noted the sentiment of many soldiers and their families, “The military is at war; America is at the mall,” Finch said. “This is a tangible way to say you’re not forgotten. You’re appreciated.” Finch never served in the military. His son is a member of the U.S. Marines and served three tours of duty in Iraq. Mike has organized box drives before
with his son in mind. Unfortunately, the area where his son was stationed had no access to the boxes being delivered. “We couldn’t do much for him. They ended up going to the (Army) National Guard.”
Better Breather Support Group Meetings The new American Lung Association of Minnesota’s Better Breathers Club Support Group at St. Francis Regional Medical Center meets the first Tuesday of each month from 1-2:30 p.m. It’s held in the St. Francis Conference Area.
