by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine City Council Monday night approved a pair of land purchase agreements totaling over $320,000. The first is with Eric and Lisa May for the acquisition of 702 South Meridian Street for $277,000 for replacement housing and relocation costs. The property will be part of

the right-of-way for the future overpass near the intersection of Highway 169 and County Road 3/Meridian Street. The Mays accepted the offer with the condition that permit fees for their replacement housing location be waived, which the council approved during a closed session on Oct. 20. City Administrator Holly Kreft reported that the Mays intend to close on the purchase of their replacement housing location on Nov. 21 and they have requested a closing with the city before then. The purchase agreement states that the Mays have until Dec. 20 to vacate the their current property.

Additional costs to the city will included the demolition of the existing house and legal fees. All funds for the purchase will come from the city’s capital and transportation funds. The second purchase agreement approved is with Waugh Properties LLC of Chanhassen for the acquisition of 100 South Meridian Street, which is the vacant lot at the intersection of Main and Meridian Streets. By a 3-2 vote on Oct. 20, the council authorized staff to prepare the purchase agreement for the property for $45,000.

The victory earned Belle Plaine, which had defeated Glencoe-Silver Lake and Jordan earlier in the week, its third straight trip to the state tournament. The Tigers, 22-10 on the season, received the No. 3 seed and will take on unseeded Rocori (25-5) 7 p.m. this Thursday at Xcel Energy Center in downtown St. Paul. The winner will play the winner between No. 2 seed and three-time defending state Class 2A champion Marshall (23-9) and Thief River

The upper bracket quarterfinals have No. 1 seed Stewartville (27-6) against Mora (26-5) and No. 4 seed Concordia Academy-Roseville (26-7) taking on No. 5 seed Maple Lake (27-5). Although Belle Plaine has the most losses of any team in the tournament, it was able to reel in the No. 3 seed because a number of those losses came in elite tournaments against highly-ranked teams from all three classes. The Tigers also recently welcomed back their top hitter and all-stater Mariena Hayden, who was out most of the regular season with a back injury. The Tigers’ highest finish ever at state was in 2005 when they placed third. They were

Local Volunteers Sought for Homeless Shelter Program The faith communities of the Belle Plane area will be hosting homeless families from Scott and Carver County for the week beginning Dec. 7 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine. According to volunteer Shannon Bergs, Families Moving Forward Southwest is a shelter program of Beacon Interfaith Collaborative who, working through local churches, provide shelter to families in crisis. During the week, the families are provided sleeping spaces on church property, evening meals and breakfast. Each day the families travel to the program center in Prior Lake, where they spend the day working with Beacon staff who help them look for housing, search

for jobs and address other issues contributing to the family being in crisis. Bergs stated that the Belle Plaine Fireman’s Relief Association and Women’s Auxiliary have agreed to play a significant role in the December effort. “It’s what they do,” said Bergs. “Every day they help people in crisis without ever asking who they are or how they got there.” Bergs added that they still need volunteers and are hopeful other local groups and organizations will join the faith communities in serving this very real need that exists in our area. Interested persons are urged to contact Bergs or any of the local churches for ways to become involved.

Since September, a crew from ADS Concrete Lifting of St. Peter used “mudjacking” -- high pressure to place a blend of sand, fine gravel, limestone and water beneath portions of downtown sidewalks that have settled along water and sewer lines. The mixture helps level uneven sidewalks. The process is much less expensive than replacing the sidewalks.

‘Mudjacking’ Fixes Sidewalk Settling, Saves Downtown Business Owners Headaches

A Steady Flow

Belle Plaine election officials reported a steady flow of voters during the initial hours of Tuesday’s General Election at Belle Plaine City Hall Tuesday morning. Voting ended at 8 p.m. Local and area election results can be found at belleplaineherald.com.

In previous years, the settling of soil along sewer and water lines beneath downtown sidewalks was a problem that caused headaches for business owners. A simple process was recently completed that will save money and serve as an easy long-term solution. It’s called, “mudjacking.” Ever hear of it? Not many folks have.

Bake Sale to Help B.P. Girl Scouts Raise Dough for Trip

Four Belle Plaine Girl Scouts want to learn more about the history of Girl Scouts and the woman who founded the organization. The four girls – Shaylee Rademacher, Elissa Moonen, Sydney Brown and Elliana Fahey – and their moms are planning a trip to Savannah, Ga. in 2016. Savannah is the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouts of the USA. She was born Juliette Magill Kinzie Gordon Oct. 31, 1860. Saturday (Nov. 8), they’ll hold a bake sale that will be the first of several fund-raisers to pay for the trip. The bake sale will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will be held during a vendor fair at St. John Lutheran at 148 Chestnut Street S. in Belle Plaine. The bake sale is not associated with the fair, said Lisa Rademacher, one of the girl’s mothers. The girls spent last weekend baking a wide array of items for the sale. “It would be really cool to be able to see where she lived, said Fahey, one of the four fifth-graders. “I like being in

Girl Scouts because we do a lot of fun activities and help out a lot of people. The girls also hope to visit the First Girl Scouts Headquarters, participate in a program to learn about Juliette Gordon Low’s family tree, visit her grandfathers railroad station where the girls would take a train ride, and participate in activities such as a Civil War reenactment. The girls can also enjoy activities that will earn them special badges specific to the Savannah, GA Service Unit, like the Savannah Safari Badge, Rademacher said. The girls also hope to visit other area attractions such as the Gulf of Mexico, they are excited to sit on the bench from Forrest Gump, go on a dolphin cruise and attempt the ghost walk, Rademacher said. This is a very unique opportunity for the girls to learn the history of something they are each very involved in and dedicated too, she said. “This won’t be a normal trip, this will be an experience they can bring back and share with the other Girl Scout Troops in Belle Plaine, Rademacher

said. The fund-raiser is the first of several the group will hold to fund the trip. “‘It was really fun to do the cookie baking. Its going to be hard work to make stuff and take time to earn all the money but it should be fun, Brown said. “‘I think if we worked really, really hard then we could get this project down and our reward would be to go to Georgia, Fahey said. According to Low’s biography on the Girl Scouts Web site, she spent several years searching for something useful to do with her life. Her search ended in 1911 when she met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides. Low became interested in the new youth movement. Afterward, she channeled all her considerable energies into the fledgling movement. Less than a year later, she returned to the United States and made her historic telephone call to a friend (a distant cousin),

Seneca Drops a Bombshell: It’s Closing Plant in Arlington Without warning, Seneca Foods’ corporate officers recently announced the vegetable canning plant in Arlington will close next spring, an irreversible decision that will leave 46 full-time workers out of a job. The announcement of the closing came earlier this month, with little or no warning. It is the result of excess inventory and reduced market share. Seneca corporate are working with Arlington employees on relocation options at other Seneca plants. The city has also reached out to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) for assistance, the Arlington Enterprise recently reported.

The city has had a canning plant in it for over 100 years. The decision will also impact about 200 seasonal workers. It will leave a 264,000-square foot building vacant, although city and state officials are confident another use for the plant is likely. The company also owns 31½ acres in the city and has an additional 541 acres associated with plant operations outside the city limits. Other impacts of the plant’s imminent shutdown are on the proposed Sibley East Bond $41.03 million school bond referendum. Superintendent Jim Amsden said the loss of the plant would have a minimal impact that won’t bee seen for another two years.

Canterbury Park Seeking 70-Day Horse Racing Meet in 2015 If the Minnesota Racing Commission approves, Canterbury Park will hold a 70-day racing meet next year, the longest horse racing schedule at the Shakopee track since 1992. Canterbury Park is proposing a meet that runs from May 15 to Sept. 12. It would be two days longer than the 2014 season, the Shakopee Valley News recently reported. Race cards for Thursdays and Fridays are proposes for 6:30 p.m. starts. Weekend racing will begin at 12:45 p.m. with some select Saturdays having evening racing.

Purses exceeding $13 million – an all-time high at the track -- have drawn more horses and horsemen to the facility. Canterbury Park President Randy Sampson expects they will grow by 5 percent next year, thanks to a 2012 cooperative agreement with the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, owners of Mystic Lake Casino Hotel. The agreement calls for supplementing purses by $75 million over a decade. The larger purses are bolstering the horse industry across the state, Sampson said.

It is rather obvious that we, as a library system, are going to encourage you to do a lot of reading. You can chose to read for pure entertainment with fiction or poetry or you may choose to read to be smarter today than you were just yesterday. Reading is a great way to educate yourself. That education process requires a lot of reading. Part of the reason is that it may take several different explanations by several authors to finally put all of the pieces together in a way that works well with your thinking process. Another reason is simply that you will often read conflicting studies. Historically, many of us remember the news that butter was bad and that margarine type products were good for us. That of course was followed up by stories that margarine products may not be good for you. Not all that long ago, we had articles that praised the merits of sun screen to avoid the suns harmful rays. I have recently seen articles that say that for some reason, many people no longer get enough exposure to sunlight. It seems that nobody is willing to put out a solid guideline that tells you the moderate mix that is likely to be best for you. You end up reading and based on that reading try to find a situation that is best for your lifestyle. Another thing that makes it difficult is that you often read articles that tell you that Product XYZ promotes a long healthy life only to find that an organization that produces Product XYZ type of products financed the study. You need to read more than one article. You need to know who wrote or researched the article. It is usually best to read the whole article. Read, read, and read some more. In view of this, and before I forget, I want to point you to a recent article at URL: http://Washingtonian/national/ health-science/compoundi n - c h o c o l a t e - f o u n d - t o - r everse-age-related-memoryloss-study-finds/2014/10/26/ cee91aac-5bcb-11e4-bd61346aee66ba29_story.html . It is an interesting article about a possible link between eating chocolate and preserving your memory. Don’t just read the headline. Read the article and see how many information pitfalls or “gotchas” are in this simple article. While you do that, I am going to enjoy a piece of chocolate (if I can remember where I left it). St. Bernard’s Catholic Church and School in Cologne has been granted permission to close the elementary school at the end of the 2014-15 school year.

In Cologne, Families Hear the News St. Bernard’s School Closing in May Because the goals were not achieved, the parish school’s new goals included increasing revenue from $34,000 to $44,000 for $2014-15. The school has collected $31,026 so far. The cost of the education for the 2014-15 school year was slated to be $7,583 with the parish contribution at 50 percent. The goal from the urgent review is a 35 percent contribution. “I’m ashamed” the school is closing, one parent told the panel. In his closing remarks, Cozzens acknowledged the sentiment, conceding the church as a whole hasn’t done a good enough job evangelizing. A group of parents – led by Brenda Buckley Jones of Carver, Cassandra Kemp of Norwood Young America and Pam Kunkel of rural Cologne -- are particularly frustrated over the news. They believe the church has not done enough to market St. Bernard’s to area residents who may be interested in a Catholic education. The group is open to trying almost anything to save the school. They’re not willing to accept Abbott’s decree the decision to close is irreversible. “We’ll keep trying until the lock the doors,” Jones said. They want to see a more concerted professional marketing effort, one where marketers can draw students from communities with their own Catholic schools. Before the Sunday meeting, Kemp, a Norwood Young America resident, expressed frustration that St. Bernard’s is unable to seek students from Waconia, Chaska, Carver or Belle Plaine. A group of school volunteers did make efforts over the summer to promote

Bishop Agrees Church Hasn’t Done Good Enough Job Evangelizing

Calling it a “painful decision” because the school is no longer “viable,” Rev. Gregory Abbott has received permission from Archbishop John Nienstedt to close St. Bernard’s School in Cologne at the end of the school year. The irreversible decision to close St. Bernard’s Elementary School in May drew about 100 people to a special meeting in the church sanctuary Sunday afternoon. Abbott and Auxiliary Bishop Andrew Cozzens, led the meeting, along with church finance committee members and staff from the Archdiocese of Minneapolis-St. Paul. And while are some are still hoping for some form of reprieve, most are seemingly ready to move forward, despite the sense of loss. Abbott, in a letter to school families, said the decision was final. “Nobody is happy about losing our school,” one St. Bernard’s member said after the meeting. “But this has been a long time coming.” The decision to close the school is a matter of bodies, or the lack thereof. St. Bernard’s just doesn’t have enough students generating tuition revenue to remain viable, said members of the church’s finance committee. The school began the 2014-15 school year with 40 students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade. A plan that followed an urgent review process that began in 2010 said the school needed 80 students at the start of 2013-14 school year.

St. Bernard’s at community festivals in Cologne, Carver and Chaska. “Those were for 2014. Everybody already knew during the summer where their kids would be going to school in 2014,” Kunkel said. Abbott noted that the effort is the work of volunteers, people with full-time jobs and families. He concedes there may not be enough students in Cologne whose families are interested in Catholic education. “This area is going to grow. We just thought it would grow sooner,” Abbott said. They also note that a school with no capital debt can afford to raise tuition. A year’s tuition at St. Bernard’s is $2,250 compared to $2,800 at Our Lady of the Prairie in Belle Plaine Cozzens appreciates the efforts, but doesn’t expect the effort will make the school practical. The 130-plus years in Cologne aside, he isn’t optimistic the school can become viable. The bishop has already scheduled a date for a closing Mass. “I know how much you love St. Bernard’s church and school,” he said. “The decision to close the school is a painful one because of the love of the school and the children.” The beginnings of a Catholic school In Cologne began in 1876. In 1880 under the guidance of Peter Wirtz, the school’s first teacher, a combined convent and school was built at a cost of $3,500. By 1881, the school had an enrollment of 117 students and was staffed by the School Sisters of Notre Dame. St. Bernard’s enjoys the teaching services of of Sisters of the FCC (Franciscan Clarist Congregation) order.

Sibley County Gets State Funding for Fighting AIS Although it doesn’t have as many lakes as neighboring counties, Sibley County has received money to fight the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) in lakes. The county received $29,808 in July and will receive $66,239 annually in the effort. Statewide, the legislature OK’d the spending of $4.5 million in 2014 and $10 million annually thereafter on the effort. The arrival of the funding means the county must now develop a plan how it will spend the money to thwart AIS, the Gaylord Hub recently reported. The county has to report its plan and how it will use the funding to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

County Administrator Matt Jaunich said options include Hiring a part-time person to coordinate a program, possibly with another county or counties since Sibley County doesn’t have that many lakes. Multiple

counties, working together, could pool their funding for better results. Other options include hiring consultants to work on the problem or issue a request for proposal.

BELLE PLAINE HERALD, BELLE PLAINE, MINNESOTA

Thirty Years Ago This Week

Miss Marlene Ohm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Ohm of Belle Plaine, became the bride of Ralph Lindemeier, son of Mrs. Ann Lindemeier of Norwood. The Belle Plaine Tigers placed two men on the All-District team. Gene Lucy and Bob Moody made the defensive club, Lucy as a linebacker and Moody as tackle. Bob Johnson and Bill Schuneman brought down a 15-pound goose on Clarks Lake.

90 Years Ago (1924)

A Record Voter Turnout A record number of voters in Belle Plaine (1,329) cast ballots in the 1984 presidential year election at the Civic Center. Election officials also counted 56 absentee ballots, including five from overseas, to bring the total of 1,385. Fran Schuman was reelected mayor of Belle Plaine over challenger Roger Martin (752 to 599). David Edberg and Ivan Otto were elected to the council. In the presidential race, Belle Plaine voters favored Ronald Reagan over Walter Mondale 775 to 593. Pictured above is Exerine Tolzman assisting a voter that Tuesday morning. Despite the recent rainfall, farmers in the Belle Plaine area were rating that year’s harvest as average or better. Scott County Extension Agent David Hart said about 60 percent of the corn had been picked and 75 percent of the soybeans were in. He had little information on yields, although he said the county average was normally 103 to 104 bushels to the acre and soybeans 30 bushels to the acre. The city of Belle Plaine received a plaque and certificate of appreciation in recognition of its progress so far in the establishment of a Minnesota Community Improvement Program here. City Administrator David Unmacht accepted the plaque and certificate on behalf of the city from Gov. Rudy Perpich at a meeting in St. Cloud. The public was being urged to attend a Star City town meeting for that coming Friday night at the Belle Plaine Civic Center. An effort would be made to establish a broader base of support for the new program, which it was hoped would attract new industry and revitalize existing businesses and industry in the city. The purpose of the upcoming meeting was to explain and hopefully get some volunteers to help with Belle Plaine’s effort to become a Star City. The local Combined Charity Drive, which was in its 17th year in 1984, was in danger of being dropped in 1985. “Unless another service group picks it up, it will not be done (next year), said Mrs. Judy O’Reilly, chairperson for the S.I.E.R.A.S Club, which was conducting that year’s drive. She added that there were enough other service organizations in town to where no one group should have to do it for more than a couple of years. The Scott County Board that Tuesday broke a three-year tradition by announcing a 7 percent increase for the 1985 levy. The levy had been at $9,524,611 for each of the pre-

vious three years. With the increase, the levy would increase to $10,219,003. Scott County Sheriff Doug Tietz reported that the 1984 Halloween evening of trickor-treating took place without any major incidents or injuries. Incidents that were reported were a house egged in Jordan, a house egged in the Elko area, a person squirted with ketchup in Savage, and a miscellaneous fire at an old, abandoned house in Savage. Clarence H. “Butch Radde, 85, well known and popular citizen of Belle Plaine for 55 years, died peacefully in his sleep Nov. 3. He loved sports, played baseball for the town team and later softball until he was 49 years old. Fishing and bowling were two of his favorite hobbies and he bowled into his late 70s. Many years previous an article appeared in the Minneapolis Star-Journal naming him as the only left-handed baseball catcher in the state. Butch was nominated for the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame, declining the honor at the time for personal reasons. Jim Kehoe, 62, died of cancer at Arlington Municipal Hospital. He was born in Jessenland Township to Michael J. and Alice Doheny Kehoe. He married Shirley Scarsdale in 1949 and farmed in Jessenland Township until moving in 1977 to Arlington, where he was employed at Big Stone Canning Co. The Belle Plaine High School Drama Guild would be presenting the murder trial, “Night of January 16th, that coming Friday and Saturday. Karen Andre, played by Steph Fogarty, was the defendant, having been accused of murdering her employer. Her attorney would be played by Scott Bergs and the prosecuting attorney by Stephanie Kellogg. The audience would determine guilty or not guilty. The BPHS volleyball team won the 1984 District 13 vol-

leyball championship. The Tigers eliminated St. Peter and Jordan in straight sets before doing the same to Le Sueur in the championship match. Next up for the Tigers would be the District 4A Tournament in Fairfax on Nov. 10. The Tigers’ first opponent would be Cosmos. Bruce Frank, 60, Le Sueur football coach since 1955, announced his retirement. He was the third winningest football coach in Minnesota prep history, winning 202 games and losing only 107 during his 37 seasons of coaching high school football in the state.

60 Years Ago (1954)

The Commercial Club voted on the controversial subject of Belle Plaine stores switching from Saturday to Friday night opening. It carried with a majority of members present. The dairy herd of Joseph M. Fogarty was second high in the Scott County Dairy Herd Improvement Association for the month of October. The poultry house on the Edwin Sharkey farm in Derrynane Township burned. A considerable number of hens were lost in the fire. Traditional Indian Summer weather prevailed and was enjoyed by everyone. Temperatures here were in the high 60s. Mrs. Joseph Bertrang, a member of the Belle Plaine school faculty, died at the Arlington hospital after being stricken with a heart attack. She was 57 years old. At the annual meeting of the Scott County 4-H Leaders Council, Mrs. Sylvan Taylor, Belle Plaine Township, was elected the new president, George Stemmer vice president, Mrs. Val Ninar secretary and Earl Ruehling treasurer. Mr. and Mrs. Sanford Banker (Victoria Krekelberg) celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house at their home. Mr. and Mrs. Armin Kruschke, who moved to Belle Plaine, were given a surprise housewarming party. Members of the Matt Hauer Sr. family gathered at the Hauer home, the occasion being Mrs. Hauer’s 80th birthday.

In that year’s election in Scott County, President Coolidge carried but two precincts – Belle Plaine borough and Prior Lake village. All others went to LaFollette. Nov. 7 marked the first snowfall, an inch or two covering all the landscape. Mrs. Sophia Tiegs, mother of Mrs. Stubenberg of the German Settlement, died and her funeral was held from the Lanesburg church. Fire destroyed the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Schmidt in Blakeley Township. The house burned rapidly but the fire department from Belle Plaine prevented spread of the flames to other buildings. At the Fish Lake Lutheran church took place the marriage of Miss Marie Ebel of that community to Walter Stier of Belle Plaine. Lillian and Veronica Ebel, John and Otto Stier were the attendants. The “Old Grads of Belle Plaine High School challenged the school’s 1924 football team to a game for Thanksgiving Day. In that year’s election, the question was up for adoption of an amendment to put a tax on gasoline purchases for benefit of the highway fund. It got a big majority vote. Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Rihl located at Iron Mountain, Mich., where he got a higher position in a bank than he had been filling in Minneapolis since he graduated from Belle Plaine High School. Our former townsman, M.C. McCarthy, was reelected to his old position as county auditor at Beach, N.D. Mrs. Anna St. John, a resident of Belle Plaine in former years, died at her home in Minneapolis and her remains were taken to Green Isle for burial. The St. John family lived in Belle Plaine a half-dozen years just after the turn of the century. Three members of the Harris family, the aged father, son and daughter, lost their lives in the burning of their farm home near Kilkenny. The elder Harris, who was a native of Ireland, was one of the first settlers in Le Sueur County. The number of motor vehicles registered in Minnesota reached 500,000.

120 Years Ago (1894)

Hogs were coming in lively. The prices was $4.00 per cwt. Local merchants were selling eastern apples at $2.50 to $3.00 per barrel. The public school had an enrollment of 126 – the upper room 58 and in the lower room 68. Carver County had an anti-ring political movement, too, which swept out of office nearly all the old officials who had held places from 20 to 30 years. James Harrington, a St. Thomas man, was back after an absence of 10 years. His occupation was gold mining and he had searched for the metal in South America, Africa and Australia.

Letter to the Editor Dear Editor, To best understand the debate, let's turn the clock back to ground zero. In a late September meeting, without advanced notice to his fellow directors or the School Superintendent, a School Board Member used his position as a pedestal to openly criticize the district for not following a policy prohibiting the promotion of school associated organizations. A bit of procedural sleight of hand but no big deal, right? Wrong. Unfortunately, the intellectually transparent Trojan Horse in the dust-up is the not so subtle fact that the consternation is with a single organization, period. Everything else is just chin-wagging nothingness. To be candid, no other "promoted" group is being singled out. The Boy Scouts aren't being told to take their stylish neckerchiefs and the deliciousness of their fund-raising popcorn and hit the bricks (nor should they). Youth sports have also avoided scrutiny (a good thing). The one and only entity coming under this discriminating glare is the Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA). A group, ironically, desiring information and discussion on the possible impacts of state legislation prohibiting bullying. Perhaps what's most disheartening about the protest is the lurking intolerance that's being worn like an ill-fitting Halloween costume and the failure to acknowledge and accept the differences that exist within each of us. But whether some folks like it or not - the paradigm has shifted. We live in the time of a new norm and, as it was for every preceding generation, the walls that constrain progress will ultimately rise and fall. We exist in an age when our very best is likely to come in any gender, color or orientation; when we're moving more toward the point of taking the measure of a person by the goodness in their heart rather than the trappings that adorn the package it's delivered in. I'd like to believe that the building blocks to the foundation we'll leave our children and grandchildren are comprised of meaningful things like compassion, goodwill, charity and kindness. For those who lack tolerance, have you ever had the good fortune to know someone who's successfully fought -back self-doubt, uncertainty and the impulse to see themselves as fractured or somehow flawed; someone who for too many years coveted the fleeting shadow of acceptance that most of us take for granted? For those so quick to judge, have you ever been invested

in a teenager's painful struggle to overcome insecurity, indecision, anxiety, and the endeavor to just fit in? In both cases, happiness and the platform from which to jump beyond themselves often comes about through fortitude, support, and the consummate understanding of people who care. Facilitate a young person's transition of pain into power and you will assuredly recalibrate your perspective. I'm far from naive as no one said that change would ever be easy or that we wouldn't have to travel the long and winding road to get there. It's just important to see that we are collectively moving in the right direction. Reassuringly, our educators remain at the leading edge. As the school guidance counselor responsively stated - "we're supporting every student that walks in our building" - well done Ms. Green. Or perhaps we should all heed the resonating words of Pope Francis who recently questioned "Who are we to judge?" Who are we indeed. Christopher Moylan Belle Plaine

St. Thomas by: Loni Graham Mass was scheduled this All Souls Day with Father James officiating and Marvin Halloran alter server. Todd Sullivan read the Liturgy. James and Andy Oak, Kevin and Beth Halloran. Masses are scheduled at St. Anne’s Church in Le Sueur on Saturdays at 5:15 p.m. and Sundays 8 and 10:30 a.m. with Father George Grafsky. Jack Burns, his son Father James Burns, and cousin Dick O’Connell, Gary and Shirley Rutt, Jim and Mary Walker, and Tom and Loni Graham enjoyed the Pancake and Sausage Breakfast at the Knights of Columbus Sunday morning after mass in St. Thomas. Greetings to Colton Wick, an 8th grader at St. Wenceslaus and his brother, Darrell, nice lads who sat at our table, and enjoyed the pancakes and sausage, too. A Memorial Service, more like a going away celebration, for Norm Sladek was held Sunday, November 2 at the Cremation Society of Minnesota in Edina. The service started with a “Tribute to Theresa”, Norm’s daughter, who cared for his needs since his beloved Joyce passed away in 2008. Theresa, Melissa and Rebecca fondly remembered their dad with laughter, smiles and tears. Family friend, Eddie Shimota, played some of Norm’s favorite Czech songs, and Norm’s family danced the polkas, as a cheerful picture of the distinguished doctor smiled down on the festivities. A Czech dinner was catered by the Lakeside Supper Club, pork, dumplings, gravy and sauerkraut, kolacky, and incuded goodies. Since the July 14, 2005 issue of the New Prague Times, Norm has made himself known as one of our dedicated St.Thomas News readers. He’d drop an email once in a while

to let this writer know how she was doing. So selfless, encouraging, and a brilliant man! Keeping his sense of humor, never mind his body racked with ALS, he had the unique ability to make everyone feel so special. He left us smiling with the words below a friendly grin on his memorial card, “Not only perfect, but Czech, too.” Pat and Kay Burns of St. Peter joined Tim and Michelle Burns at the Road Haus for the Friday night fish fry. Fires are always something to worry about during harvest and this year, Todd Sullivan had the misfortune in his last field, on the “Sharkey” farm, Friday. Quick action by local resident Jim Garis, who’s the New Prague Police Chief, the New Prague Fire Department, and Jim and Andy Oak who were tilling ground close by. There was a bit of damage to Todd’s semi truck, no injuries. Thank God. The members of Wolff family visited our dearly departed, before dropping in on the Bruce and Cathy’s Halloran home. Bernetta Wolff of Waseca, Richard Wolff of Prior Lake, Ray Wolff of Edina, and Marcia Wolff Cotton of Mankato thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality of Bruce and Cathy Halloran last Thursday afternoon. Cathy served a delicious lunch and Bruce told stories as they toured the farm. Madelyne Burns Wolff is Bruce’s first cousin. Happy Birthday to John Anthony Halloran. “Tar” was born at the home of his maternal grandparents, in the big Schoell house, in Belle Plaine, on October 22, 1924. So far, he’s living a year older than his dad, John P. Next goal to beat is his aunt, Alice, 100 years young plus 3 months. Many happy more, Tar. Our farmers are hard at it, quite a few are close to finishing up. Lets keep it a good safe harvest, folks.

Belle Plaine Woman Willing to Fight for Childrens’ Safety (continued from page 2)

equipment, merchandise from Lowe’s, gift certificates from Ashley Furniture, Tupperware and Tastefully Simple products, quilts, scarves and much more. West, her family and friends hope to raise about $12,000. They organized the silent auction, secured space at the American Legion Post and sought donations on the fly because time is short. West is seeking an emergency court order to win custody of her stepsister’s two children, Samantha, 5, and two-year-old Elizabeth before Melissa, West’s stepsister, can head back to Texas and eventually Mexico. First, she needs an ex-parte ruling combining the two cases – one for each child – into one case. Both girls are American citizens, born in Minnesota, West said. Samantha is staying with West here in Belle Plaine. Elizabeth is in Galveston, Texas at the Shriner’s Hospital recovering from scalding West and her mother, Sue Evans, say came at the hands of Melissa’s boyfriend. They are certain of the unhealthy relationship because of a message they received in July of 2013 via a shelter for abused women. Sept. 25, Elizabeth suffered severe burns to 60 percent of her body when, West and Evans claim, the girl was burned by boiling water. The following day (Sept. 26), the young child was taken to Shriners Children’s Hospital in Galveston. “She lost all her hair. Her skin just peeled off,” Evans said. Mexican authorities deemed the burning an accident. West and Evans said police and hospital staff in Galveston question if it was an accident. Melissa was not home at the time of the incident, just the man and the two girls. The couple lives in Puebla, a city just southeast of Mexico City. West traveled to Puebla to bring Samantha back to Belle Plaine while her sister is in the hospital. She has blended in nicely with West’s three children, Macy, Nathan and Colton. Staff at the U.S. Consulate and U.S. Embassy in Mexico has assisted the family. They have worked with state police in Texas, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar’s Office, Scott County Child Protection workers and staff from the Missing Americans Project to find Melissa and arrange for expedited approval to bring Samantha into the United States and Belle Plaine. They aren’t certain where the man is. West and Evans believe Melissa’s children are not in a stable environment. “Everything is for these girls,” Evans said. “They have been through too much. They’ve never had a (normal) family dynamic. They need a stable life.” West concedes she doesn’t know her stepsister well. Evans married Melissa’s father six years ago and the blended family gets together only during the holidays or at family gatherings. West expects Melissa would oppose court action to take temporary or permanent custody of the two children. She just wants Melissa to get help and be in a safe place where she can raise her children without fear. “She needs to get things in her life together. She’s not making good decisions for herself or her children,” Evans said. “I don’t want them to think that’s the norm.”

During his 32 years on the Scott County Board (1961-1993), former Commissioner Bill Koniarski of rural Belle Plaine (left) spent years working for the funding, construction and opening of the Bloomington Ferry Bridge in 1996. Koniarski was part of a group of dignitaries at the bridge’s ribbon cutting that included former U.S. Reps. Jim Ramstad and David Minge and former U.S. Sens. the late Paul Wellstone and Dave Durenberger.

saying, “I’ve got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we’re going to start it tonight. March 12, 1912, Juliette Low gathered 18 girls to register the first troop of American Girl Guides. Margaret “Daisy Doots Gordon, her niece and namesake, was the first registered member. The name of the organization was changed to Girl Scouts the following year. In developing the Girl Scout movement in the United States, Low brought girls of all backgrounds into the out-of-doors, giving them the opportunity to develop self-reliance and resourcefulness, according to Girl Scouts of USA. She encouraged girls to prepare not only for traditional homemaking, but also for possible future roles as professional women—in the arts, sciences and business—and for active citizenship outside the home. Girl Scouts welcomes girls with disabilities at a time when they were excluded from many other activities. This idea seemed quite natural to Juliette, who never let deafness, back problems or cancer keep her from full participation in life. From the original 18 girls, Girl Scouts has grown to 3.7 million members. Girl Scouts is the largest educational organization for girls in the world and has influenced the more than 59 million girls, women and men who have belonged to it. Juliette Gordon Low accumulated admirers and friends of all ages, nationalities and walks of life. By maintaining contact with overseas Girl Guides and Girl Scouts during World War I, she helped lay the foundation for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, according to her biography. After her death from breast cancer, her friends honored her by establishing the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund, which finances international projects for Girl Scouts and Girl Guides around the world. Juliette Gordon Low died at her Savannah, Ga., home on Lafayette Square Jan. 17, 1927. She is buried at Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah.

What a great weekend it was for Tiger activities as two teams played for the right to advance to the State Tournament and one individual competed in the State Tournament. On Friday night, the Tiger football team travelled to Blue Earth to take on the top-ranked Bucs in the Section Championship game. In a game that was highlighted by big offensive plays from both teams, the Bucs pulled away in the 4th quarter for a 47-32 win. Great job Tigers as you continued to improve each and every week of the season! Saturday’s events began around noon when Janessa Meuleners approached the starting line in her 6th and final state crosscountry meet at St. Olaf. Janessa went on to have her best state effort ever with a 4th place finish. Congratulations Janessa on your high finish at the State Meet and on your great crosscountry career! The day concluded with a rematch of last year’s section volleyball championship match between our Tigers and the Knights from Kenyon-Wanamingo. The Tigers prevailed once again by a 3-1 score and advance to the State Tournament this weekend. The Tigers were seeded #3 and will face Rocori at 7 p.m. on Thursday at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. They will play again at 7 p.m. on Friday. Congratulations to everyone on another State Tournament berth Tigers and good luck in your upcoming games! With such great weather all fall, it is hard to begin thinking of hazardous winter weather, but is that transition time of the year. To help Minnesota residents minimize risks and mitigate the hazards of winter, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety — in collaboration with the National Weather Service and other state, federal and non-profit agencies — sponsors “Winter Hazard Awareness Week each fall to educate, inform, remind and reinforce the behaviors that lead to a warm, safe and enjoyable winter season. The event, which runs from November 10 – November 14 includes a media campaign, literature and other informational materials. The week-long educational campaign targets specific information each day that can be used in conjunction with school, church, or civic programs. The focus areas of the campaign are: Monday, November 10: Winter Storms Tuesday, November 11: Outdoor Winter Safety Wednesday, November 12: Winter Fire Safety Thursday, November 13: Indoor Winter Safety Friday, November 14: Winter Driving To find our more about winter weather survival tips, visit the website: https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/hsem/Pages/default.aspx Once at the site, click on the Winter Hazard Awareness Week link. It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security beneďŹ ts. A person can take a reduced beneďŹ t as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full beneďŹ t at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger beneďŹ t. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced beneďŹ t, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you beneďŹ t from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years ďŹ lled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may ďŹ ll only a limited amount of your ďŹ nancial demands. the type of use. Until a development is in place, the city could also use the property for civic uses such as the local farmers market.” In other business Monday night, the council unanimously authorized the preparation of the preliminary report for the proposed 2015 street and utility improvement project. The streets proposed for the project are West Forest Street between Grove Street and the railroad right-of-way, and Elk Street between Court and Forest streets. Public hearings on the need for the project and preliminary assessments will be held later this year or in early 2015. Cost estimates have not yet been determined. *Unanimously approved an expenditure amount not to exceed $1,800 authorizing the city engineering firm of Bolton and Menk to prepare and submit and application for a grant from the state’s Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP). Staff reported that the maximum award amount is $750,000, which would be used toward the construction of a future overpass near the intersection of Highway 169 and County Road 3. The application is due Jan. 2. “With respect to this funding opportunity, I have discussed the County Road 3 area overpass with Scott County Engineer Mitch Rasmussen and we both feel it would be a great candidate for submittal,” reported City Engineer Joe Duncan. “Scott County will not be submitting any LRIP applications for other projects throughout the county.” *Unanimously authorized the mayor and city administrator to execute a project agreement for Chestnut ravine improvements

in the amount of $9,780. Staff reported that the Scott Water Management Organization has agreed to participate in half the cost of the project, which was recently completed as a change order from the 2012 project. The improved construction was to help control groundwater seeps in the ravine and the additional inlet near the top of the ravine. *Unanimously appointed the following as officers for the Belle Plaine Fire Department, effective Jan. 1, 2015: Matt Stier (chief 1), Steve Otto (chief 2), Brian Siekmann (chief 3), Anthony Olson (lieutenant), Travis Otto (lieutenant) and Troy Otto (lieutenant). *Unanimously appointed Dyanne Faraday and Kevin Sieben as part-time temporary seasonal employees for the Belle Plaine Public Works Department, and to seek candidates for the remaining open position. Faraday and Sieben are the same employees appointed for the 2013-14 winter season and sought to be reappointed. *Unanimously accepted a $500 donation from Farm League LLC for the Tiger Park rest room project. Farm League LLC recently filmed a Genesis (Cenex) commercial, for which Tiger Park was one of the locations. *Unanimously approved a large assembly permit from the Streets of Hope Outreach organization for an overnight homeless awareness event on Nov. 14 at the River Rock Church vacant property south of Highway 169 in Belle Plaine. The next regular meeting of the Belle Plaine City Council is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 17 in the City Hall building at 218 North Meridian Street downtown.

Counties Competing for Donations to Project Community Connect Scott County and Carver counties have entered into a friendly competition to gather personal care products for the upcoming Scott-Carver Project Community Connect (PCC) Nov. 19 at Canterbury Park Expo Center in Shakopee. Residents from both counties are being asked to donate regular family-size soap, shampoo, deodorant and toothpaste to PCC so that these items can be given out to each needy family attending the event. The items can be dropped off at the either of the two county government centers or any of the public libraries in the two counties. They can also be brought to the Canterbury Park Expo Center after 1 p.m. on Nov. 18. “The competition began with the successful efforts of the Carver County Employee Club to encourage employees to donate funds and personal care products to PCC,” said Coleen Speer, PCC chairperson. “The Scott County Employee Association soon followed suit challenging its employees to see if they could donate more than Carver County. We’re now asking the residents of both counties to get involved in the competition and see which county can donate the most.” Organizers anticipate 500 to 600 local residents will attend this year’s Project Community Connect. It will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 19, in the Canterbury Park Expo Center, 1100 Canterbury Road, Shakopee.

The local event features free medical services, children’s dental services, flu shots, employment assistance, education resources, legal assistance, veteran services, housing information, haircuts, and help accessing Minnesota birth certificates, ID cards and driver’s licenses. Various other types of assistance and access to a wide variety of community resources are also offered at PCC. Those attending the event will receive a free lunch and free childcare. Free transportation to the event is offered. The local Project Community Connect was developed in response to the Heading Home Scott-Carver “Plan to End Homelessness” approved by the Carver County Board of Commissioners and the Scott County Board in 2010. It reinforces the plan’s goal of raising awareness by engaging the community in efforts to address the challenges of poverty and homelessness in the two counties. Project Community Connect is funded entirely by donations, and donations to PCC are 100 percent tax deductible. Checks should be made payable to the CAP Agency with the words, “Project Community Connect,” in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to: Project Community Connect, c/o CAP Agency, 712 Canterbury Road. S., Shakopee, MN 55379. Additional information is also available online -- www.ScottCarverPCC.org

jacking” to fix the settling of sidewalks installed in 19992000. “It’s a lot less invasive process,” Fahey said. The city hired ADS Concrete Lifting of St. Peter to do the work for $15,480. ADS workers found sidewalks that needed to be raised anywhere from a half-inch to 3 inches said Mike Bartlett, an ADS Concrete Lifting partner. A series of holes, about 3 inches in diameter are drilled in the sidewalk in the areas of settling. A mixture of sand, fine gravel, limestone and water is pumped through the hole at 1,500 pounds per-square-inch, expanding into an area about 36 inches in diameter. As the mixture hardens, it expands and raises the settled sidewalk to a

level even with the other sidewalk. The workers then capped the mixture with an expansion joint and leveled off the cap. ADC Concrete started the work in early September. Its workers spent time in Belle Plaine over the weekends to minimize conflicts with Belle Plaine’s downtown businesses. They worked on 12 downtown blocks, drilling and filling about 1,300 holes along the lateral undergrounds utility lines. The city funded the project using leftover proceeds of a taxincrement financing district, Fahey said. It’s money well spent, he figures, since replacing the sidewalk is much more costly than mudjacking. The other option is for property owners to replace settling sidewalk at their own expense.

Belle Plaine Falls in Blue Earth The Belle Plaine High School football team’s quest to reach the state playoffs came up one win shy for a second year in a row as it lost to Blue Earth Area 47-32 in the Section 3AAA championship game Friday night in Blue Earth. The Tigers, the No. 3 seed, were tied with the top-seeded Bucs 20-20 at halftime before being outscored 27-12 in the second half by the home team’s high-powered running attack “I can’t say enough about the growth of our team throughout the playoffs, said Belle Plaine coach Justin Johnston. “The way the regular season ended (three straight losses), the boys could have given up, but they worked hard and showed a ton of improvement. The seniors will be missed. They contributed a lot to the success of the football program over their four years.

We had a lot of youth in key positions this year and hopefully they will put in the work this offseason to really propel us into the 2015 season. Junior quarterback Luke Narveson will be one of those players back. Like Friday, he accounted for most of the Tigers’ touchdowns throwing and running. Also back will be freshman Carter Brink, the team’s top rushing running back, as well as junior receivers Paul Nasby, Jonny Vinkemeier and Branden Schulz, the former of whom had 11 catches for 217 yards Friday night. Vinkemeier had six grabs for 91 yards. Marcus Walsh, a freshman running back who began the season as a reserve, carried eight times for 76 yards Friday. In all, Belle Plaine will return some 20 juniors from this year’s

team, as well as a dozen sophomores and several freshmen. Those who played their final high school football game Friday (in order on the roster) were Jordan Harthan, Joe Hankins, Ben Wagner, Ben Stier, Ryan Wolke, Kincade Retzer, Alec Selly, Adam Glisczinski, Dylan O’Brien, Taylor Ponath, and Alec Lorenz. 2014 BPHS Football Results Aug. 28 vs. Albany L 58-28 Sept. 5 vs. S.E. Tigers 3, Glencoe-SL 0 Top-seed Belle Plaine, which was coming off an easy victory over Watertown-Mayer in the first round the previous Thursday night in Belle Plaine, completed another three-set playoff sweep against Glencoe-Silver Lake last Tuesday night in New Prague by counts of 25-17, 2523, 25-17. Hayden had 23 kills and two ace serves, both team highs. She also had 15 digs. Other statistical leaders for the Tigers were Kaylee Hentges (nine kills and six digs), Dakotah Poitra (eight kills and 13 digs), Danielle Taylor (34 set assists and seven digs), Taylor Kruger (seven digs and one ace serve) and Paige Narveson (four digs). Tigers 3, Jordan 1 Belle Plaine and Jordan had split their two regular season matches and were involved in a three-way share of the Minnesota River Conference title with Sibley East, which lost in the subsection semifinals to Jordan in five sets last Tuesday night in New Prague. At stake for the third goaround between the Tigers and Jaguars Thursday at GAC was the North Subsection championship and the right to return to GAC for the section championship match on Saturday. This marked Hayden’s first time on the floor against Jordan this season and she responded with a team-high 21 kills and five ace serves as the Tigers fought off the second-seeded Jaguars 25-17, 17-25, 27-25, 25-15. Hentges added 16 kills and seven digs, while Poitra had 10 kills and eight digs. Johnson was tops in digs with eight and Taylor had 44 set assists, five digs and three kills. Tigers 3, Kenyon-W 1 Hayden posted 34 kills, 22 digs and three ace serves as Belle Plaine, champions of the North Subsection, stuck it to South Subsection titleholder KenyonWanamingo for the second year in a row by scores of 25-17, 1925, 25-23, 25-19 for the right to

Other leaders for Belle Plaine were Taylor (50 set assists, 12 digs and three kills), Hentges (eight kills and seven digs), Poitra (14 digs and seven kills), Johnson (22 digs) and Narveson (six digs). Although Belle Plaine won each of its four postseason matches in four sets or less, coach Cassie Koch said there’s still room for improvement. “Appropriately, our playoff run was very similar to our season. At times, we were unstoppable and other times we significantly struggled. However, at the end of the day we have a group of very talented girls that have bought into our championship program and philosophies, and it’s paid off. We have the potential to do some damage this year at Xcel. With focus and determination, we should have a great experience. A big thank you for all of the fan support this far and in advance for the coming weekend, Koch said. 2014 BPHS Volleyball Results and Remaining Schedule Aug. 26 at LS-H W 3-0 Sept. 2 at Jordan W 3-1 Sept. 8 vs. TCU W 3-1 Sept. 9 vs. Waconia L 3-0 Sept. 11 vs. Jordan L 3-0
