Scenic Byway Races This Saturday The trees in the river valley are near the peak of their autumn colors just in time for this Saturday’s fifth annual Scenic Byway races in Belle Plaine. Featured again this year will be a half-marathon, 5K and Kids Fun Run. As of Friday morning, approximately 225 people had preregistered for the races, which is slightly ahead of last year’s pace, when a total of 252 runners registered (144 in the halfmarathon and 108 in the 5K). If you have not yet registered, you can do so online (Belle Plaine Festivals and Events) or in person starting at 7 a.m. Saturday at Court Square Park, headquarters of the day’s activities.
The 50th Annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup drew thousands of spectators to see about 1,000 buffalo relocated from the prairie and grasslands of Custer State Park to a corral Friday (Sept. 25). Belle Plaine’s Rob Edberg worked the roundup on horseback, helping to move the buffalo into the corral area.
The cost for the half-marathon is $50 and for the 5K it’s $30. The Kids Fun Run is $10. There’s also a two-person relay option for the half-marathon, the cost of which is $70. The Kids Fun Run (for ages 10 years and under) will start at 8:45 a.m., followed by the halfmarathon at 9 a.m. and the 5K at 9:20 a.m. All races begin and end at Court Square Park. Chip timing will be provided for the half-marathon and 5K races. The half-marathon, relay and 5K courses are USATF certified. Awards will go to the overall male and female win-

Council Says Now is Not the Rob Edberg Gets a Chance Time to Rename Prairie Park
to Ride With the Buffalo
B.P. Man Picked for Roundup
There’s a whole bunch of cowboy in Rob Edberg. Give him the chance and he’d no doubt rather spend more time in a saddle than behind a desk. The Belle Plaine native took advantage of the chance of a lifetime to spend a week riding in Custer State Park and work as one of the 20 outside riders chosen by lottery to work the annual Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup at the park Friday, Sept. 25. The roundup moves about 1,000 buffalo from the grassland and prairie sections of the 71,000-square-mile state park in southwestern South Dakota to corral areas. In the corrals, the buffalo are branded and vaccinated. A portion of the herd will be sold off at auction. They’ll be replaced by between 300 and 400 calves born the following spring, said Craig

gust, the mares and bulls have parted ways. For a few weeks before the roundup, wranglers working for the park service head out into the prairie and grassland on the eastern and southern sections of the park to find clusters of mares and their

by Dan Ruud In what was an emotional 30 minutes for members of the Belle Plaine City Council and a couple of dozen people in attendance in support of renaming the city’s softball field from Prairie Park to Jerry Connolly Memorial Field, the council Monday night opted (for the time being) to uphold the city’s policy that states a person must be deceased for a minimum of 10 years before such a change can occur. The park board had also recommended keeping the name Prairie Park, but like the council, discussed ways to memorialize the late Jerry Connolly by adding amenities in his honor at the park such as park benches, which was approved by the council during the regular meeting that preceded the work session, the latter of which was devoted only to the requested renaming of the park. The two dozen people in attendance at the workshop was just a small sampling of individuals who want the park renamed Jerry Connolly Memorial Field as the group has obtained over 600 signatures on a petition asking for just that. The man who shot two people Thursday night after returning his son to a former girlfriend’s house in Chaska was arrested Friday in Jordan. Joshua Gilpin is being held in the Carver County Jail. He was arrested Friday (Oct. 2) for first-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault after an overnight manhunt. The shooting occurred Thursday (Oct. 1) around 9:30 p.m., at 3625 County Road 140 on Chaska’s west side. Tuesday (Oct. 6), Hennepin County Medical Center would release no information on the two shooting victims. Joshua Gilpin fled on foot after the shooting, starting an overnight search. A handgun was reportedly found at the scene of the shooting. Joshua Gilpin was arrested without incident Friday morning around 11:30 a.m. at a house on the 200 block of Mertens Street in Jordan, near the intersection of Mertens and Highway 282. Police said he occasionally lives there with his parents in Jordan.
Jordan police said a search of the area in Chaska was conducted by the Chaska Police Department and Carver County Sheriff’s Office. As the Chaska Police Department investigated, police learned Gilpin was potentially inside of the house in Jordan. A perimeter around the house in Jordan was set up by the Jordan Police Department and the Scott County Sheriff’s Office early Friday to contain the area around the residence. The Chaska Police Department drafted and secured a search warrant to search the residence for Gilpin. The Scott County/Carver County/Tri-City SWAT team assisted by the Bloomington Police Department SWAT team entered and searched the residence. Gilpin was not found in the house. School in Jordan was delayed for two hours Friday morning. The district’s buildings were in a ‘soft lockdown.’ They were allowed to move within the buildings. Students were bussed between buildings.

$8,000 Raised
Mindy Meierbachtol, playing for MAINSTREET, smacked this pitch for a triple during Saturday’s Jerry Connolly Memorial Softball Tournament at Prairie Park. Meierbachtol just beat the tag at third base, which was being covered by Jon Ostendorf of Shakopee’s Prison Purses. The tournament was in honor of Jerry Connolly, who was a local softball enthusiast, including being an umpire for the Belle Plaine Softball Association for many years. The tournament, including a silent auction, beanbag tournament and concessions, raised about $8,000, which will go to Dollars for Scholars in Connolly’s name.

$10,000 Earned Saturday’s Buick Drive for Your Students fund-raiser sponsored by Matt Saxe ChevroletBuick in Belle Plaine attracted a record 532 test drivers, which earned the Belle Plaine High School Choir Department the maximum $10,000. The previous record was 327. Matt Saxe credited BPHS choir director Cheryl Gorton and many volunteer students for the event’s success. Many of those students helped lure potential test drivers to the dealership from several strategic intersections in town, including this group who was stationed in front of the dealership. Pictured in the Tiger costume is Lauren Johnson. To her left are Tyson Fahey, Colin Schultz, Griffin Ruud, Jake Pingalore and Mitchell Koepp, all of whom are choir students.

Belle Plaine Optometrist Shares the Hidden Dangers of Screen Time Discusses Concerns With Three Twin Cities Stations
Belle Plaine optometrist Chad Dockter recently appeared on three Twin Cites stations to discuss children’s eye health and digital screen usage. The Southwest Eye Care doctor was on the morning shows of KMSP, WCCO and KARE 11. His appearances were in mid-September over the course of a few weeks. The primary focus of Dr. Dockter’s appearances was to raise awareness of the dangers of digital screen use and kids as it relates to back to school. Recent research shows that the high energy blue light emitted from digital screens carries risks to your eyes and health. Digital screens can be defined as smart phones, tablets, iPads and computer screens. The blue light that is emitted has both short- and long-term effects on eyes. When questioned about those effects, Dr. Dockter discussed short-term effects like computer vision syndrome, eye fatigue and even melatonin suppression. Recent research is definitively showing that digital screen usage at night decreases melatonin levels, thereby affecting sleep, mood and productivity. He also stressed that the most at risk part of the population for all of these effects is the age 12 and under kids who have not yet developed the natural filter in their eyes that will help later in adulthood block some of the bad light. The largest long-term effect is what blue light does to the retina. Over time, it can cause changes to the retina that increase the risk for developing macular degeneration. Even
though adults were not the focus of his television spots, Dr. Dockter is making them a priority in his everyday practice. Southwest Eye Care is recommending blue light filter screens and blue light blocking glasses for all patients with a family history of macular degeneration. Obviously, anyone already diagnosed should be even more aggressive with how they protect their eyes with screen usage. During the television spots, Dr. Dockter talked about some other useful tips to help with digital fatigue. As he discussed extensively, the reality is that all of us, especially our kids, are on these devices more and more. Most school districts in the state are moving towards tablets or iPads as the primary workstation for students, so just avoiding use is not a practical reality. As he lamented during his TV appearances, Dr. Dockter’s own middle-school daughters have homework most nights that cannot be completed without computer access. Instead of limiting use, Dr. Dockter would rather let his kids and his patients use today’s technology to the fullest while at the same time protecting their eye health. In preparing for the appearances, Dr. Dockter was acutely aware of the difficulty of getting information presented succinctly in the limited time that television allows. He joked about being glad that during eye examinations in the office, his ability to discuss these and other issues is not subject to the clock and bright lights that is television. Dr. Dockter’s KARE 11 Television appearance can be viewed by Googling “Dr. Chad Dockter shares the hidden dangers of screen time.”

Not Forgetting Where He Started Dave Unmacht, who was Belle Plaine’s city administrator in the early- to mid-1980s, recently became executive director of the League of Minnesota Cities. He attended Monday night’s city council meeting to express his appreciation to Belle Plaine for giving him his start in local government. Unmacht, who lives in Eagan, has worked a number of government-related jobs through the years, including being Scott County’s administrator for a number of years.

application to the city why Prairie Park should be renamed in Connolly’s honor. “Jerry Connolly dedicated many years of service to the softball community of Belle Plaine. He played for several years, umpired for over 15 years and, until recently, was running the men’s league. The men’s league did not exist for over 10 years until Jerry brought it back. He attended all district meetings for both the men’s league and women’s league, assigned umpires for games and maintained an open line of communication between leagues and teams. “Jerry was so committed and dedicated that he often spent his free time assisting with field and facility maintenance at Prairie Park. He would raise and lower bases, chalk foul lines, pull weeds, secure equipment storage devices, add clay under home plate and much, much more. Jerry worked for the city of Belle Plaine for 23 years, a career he was proud of.” Hartmann went on to explain that Connolly’s commitment to Belle Plaine extended far beyond Prairie Park and softball. “Jerry would help anyone. If you needed to borrow a tool, needed a ride, or just needed a helping hand on a project, he would be there in a heartbeat. When his neighbor was diagnosed with cancer, he started mowing his lawn and plowing his driveway. When his older neighbor had a stroke, he started doing his lawn care as well. Jerry did this for several years. “He cared about the community. There isn’t a police officer, fireman, pool employee or community member that Jerry didn’t know. On the rare chance Jerry didn’t know you, he knew someone in your family . . .” In addressing the council personally Monday night, Hartmann reemphasized much of the above, and added that if the city waits 10 years to rename the park, many people, including what will likely be a new city council, will not know or remember who Connolly was. Mayor Mike Pingalore and other members of the council sympathized with Hartmann and those in attendance. Pingalore said the city’s 10-year park renaming policy has only been in place for two years, and that the city has already received multiple requests for similar actions, including one to rename Tiger Park. “The park board discussed that this was a difficult decision, but that the policy (10 years) was put in place to handle these types of requests equitably and to not show favoritism to a particular individual, family or organization,” reported City Administrator Holly Kreft. Although he agreed that now is not the time to rename the park, Council Member Paul Chard said he thinks 10 years is a long time, and that he would like to see the issue be reconsidered before then. Pingalore agreed, adding that staff will be directed to lookPlaine further into the Belle policies in other communities Herald to see if the city should perhaps “loosen” it’s own policy, possibly to five years or less. No one from the audience openly expressed any frustration with the council’s decision, and exited the council chambers silently when the workshop ended.
Regular Meeting
During Monday night’s regular meeting, the council unanimously approved an easement agreement with Chatfield on the Green LLC for the upcoming construction of the Enterprise Drive overpass project City Administrator Holly Kreft reported that Chatfield on the Green LLC, a housing development near the new overpass area, agreed to grant an easement for the portion of land (32 feet in depth) needed for the project. The agreement also includes a $10,000 payment and attorney fees ($472.50) by the city to Chatfield on the Green LLC. Kreft added that the easement is needed to accommodate the bypass lane on County Road 3 at the Orchard Street intersection as required by Scott County. Meanwhile, Belle Plaine City Engineer Joe Duncan reported that the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) upheld the council’s recent approval of awarding the bid for the Enterprise Drive extension and overpass project to S.M. Hentges and Sons at the low bid of $3,179,966.84, which was over $1.2 million below the engineer’s estimate. “Mn/DOT has concurred with the low bid and the cooperative agreement has been fully executed,” said Duncan, adding that a pre-construction meeting is scheduled for 10 a.m. Oct. 14. The final completion date for the project is Oct. 14, 2016,
with an intermediate completion of the approach of embankments to subgrade by this Dec. 18. A groundbreaking ceremony for the project has been scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 19. *The council was the recipient of more good news when Mark Ruff of Ehlers and Associates, the city’s financial advisor, provided a summary of the bond sales for this year’s street and utility improvement and the Enterprise Drive overpass projects. He said the city has maintained its high financial rating, which resulted in better bond interest rates and lower costs than anticipated, which will save the city and taxpayers money in the years to come. *Unanimously accepted a donation of two park benches from the Belle Plaine Wednesday Night Men’s Bowling League to be installed in the memory of long-time Belle Plaine Public Works employee Jerry Connolly. The group will work with public works on the exact location and installation of the benches, which will come from By the Yard. *Unanimously accepted a cash donation of $1,000 from the Belle Plaine German Days Committee for the purchase of targets for the Belle Plaine Archery Park. The next regular meeting of the Belle Plaine City Council is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Oct. 19 in the City Hall building at 218 North Meridian Street downtown.
For The Jameson Foundation Theresa McDaniel, left, presented a check on Saturday to Rick and Gabby (Persson) Stidger for $1,500 on behalf of the German Days Committee. The money will go to The Jameson Foundation, which was founded by Rick and Gabby in hopes of developing a place for grieving parents who have lost a child to go to for support. The Stidgers’ son, Jameson, died from sudden infant death syndrome in 2013. More information about The Jameson Foundation is available at www.thejamesonhouse.com.

90 Years Ago (1925)
New Computer Lab Belle Plaine Junior High School Principal Dan Dressen, left, and lab director Jeff Hiltz, who also taught mathematics, showed off the school’s new computer lab in the fall of 1985. Students pictured, from left, are Dave Barlage, Dana Otto, Diane Latzke and Tara Mueller. The Belle Plaine School Board approved a district levy for the 1986-87 school year of $1,439,769, which would be a 6.7 percent increase over the current levy. School Superintendent Dr. John Bartholow attributed the increase to a large raise in maintenance costs. Other increases were in the transportation and the community services budgets. Teacher salary negotiations between the Belle Plaine School Board and the Belle Plaine Education Association were underway. No specific salary dollar amounts were being discussed yet but rather philosophy regarding the schedule had been discussed. A computer laboratory was established in Belle Plaine Junior High School that fall (see photo), completing a five-year program that aimed at establishing computer labs in every school building. Junior High Principal Dan Dressen said the lab featured 14 machines. Up until then, junior high students had to go to the high school to be able to practice on computers. The Scott County Sheriff’s Office was investigating a breakin at Wendy Laboratories in Blakeley, in which $10,000 in equipment was stolen, including two computers and two sets of laboratory scales. Belle Plaine City Administrative Assistant Evie Kruschke informed the city that she would be resigning, effective Oct. 25. Kruschke said she was leaving the city after four years of employment “for a combination of reasons.” Mayor Fran Schuman said she was in favor of doing what could be done to keep Kruschke on the payroll. Belle Plaine Public Works Superintendent Pat Fogarty said the city would again become involved in selling and planting

trees for $60 each. Fogarty said most of the trees would be ash. The Belle Plaine Knights of Columbus would observe their 75th anniversary with a banquet that coming Saturday evening. The guest speaker would be Major General Patrick Hessian, a native son of Belle Plaine. He was the chief of all chaplains in the U.S. Army. Ella Lieske, 81, of Belle Plaine, passed away Oct. 4 at the Belle Plaine Lutheran Home. She was born March 14, 1904 at Henderson to George B. and Caroline (Buesing) Schrupp. She received her degree in education, teaching in schools at Jordan and St. Paul. She married Louis E. Lieske on Dec. 2, 1929. On a night unfit for much of anything, the BPHS football team was beaten at Montgomery 7-0. The field was in terrible shape with water standing in most grassy areas and the rest was nothing but mud. Next up would be a game against unbeaten Le Center. The Tiger volleyball team stayed unbeaten in the conference at 9-0 with victories over Mankato Loyola and Arlington. Laurie Wolpern led all hitters with 25 kills against Loyola and 21 against Arlington. The BPHS tennis team completed the regular season with a record of 10-4 with 5-0 victories over Mankato Loyola and Faribault Shattuck. Singles players Sara Miller, Courtney Hoelz and Jill Fogarty all coasted to straight-set wins, as did doubles players Molly Daly, Sally Halbmaier, Shelly Meger and Simonne Bull.

Glen Bressler, 22-year-old Henderson man, twin brother of Glanda Bressler of Belle Plaine, was the victim of an automobile accident. His car missed a curve and rolled over. He was hospitalized and later released. Neal Lucy, for 84 years a resident of this community, died at the New Prague hospital after a short illness. He was a son of pioneer settlers Daniel and Mary Lucy. Miss Verna Hagen, who spent her girlhood in Belle Plaine, was married in Portland, Ore., to Andrew Elias. A wedding was held in St. Thomas when Miss Margie Kilduff became the bride of Ollie Prochaska of Heidelberg. Ronnie Jones, 2 1/2-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Jones, died from injuries received in a corn elevator accident on his parents’ farm six miles east of Le Sueur. At Centennial Lutheran Church in Henderson took place the marriage of Miss Elverda Otto, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Otto of Henderson, formerly of Blakeley Township, to Willard Bird, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Bird. The Reverend William F. Tinge, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Blakeley Township, served as Scott County chairman of the All-Lutheran Food Appeal in 1955. Kenneth Narr, 23, of Washington Lake Township, was hospitalized after being pinned down between a load of corn and his tractor when the hitch broke. Fred D. Laabs, 67, owner and operator of “Laabs Place” in Henderson the past 20 years, passed away at Immanuel Hospital, Mankato. Correction Last Wednesday’s 60 Years Ago column should have stated that Miss La June Schwandt, daughter of George Schwandt of Le Sueur, became the bride of Thomas L. Newell, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Newell of Belle Plaine; and Miss Dorothy Diers, daughter of Mrs. Frank Diers of Belle Plaine, became the bride of Thomas Pendley, son of Mrs. Frank Pendley of Flagstaff, Ariz.

Oct. 10 brought the first hard frost and snow flurries. Many members of the Schmidt relationship went to Le Sueur to attend the funeral of Mrs. Wm. Volbrecht. The World Series was heard that year by radio. The public radio at Mesenbring’s drew a packed house each afternoon. A chartered bus bringing home a load of St. Peter students from the Saturday football game in Minneapolis went out of control just east of Belle Plaine, and some occupants were slightly injured. A relief bus came out and the wrecked bus was towed in. The postponed baseball game between Ed Eckhard’s team and the St. Paul league team hit very chilly weather, but the game went through in defiance of damp and frigid weather. The final score was St. Paul 15, Belle Plaine 9. Frank Lusky, 37, a resident of Le Sueur, was killed when his car collided with another Le Sueur County auto. The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John Zaun died and the funeral was held from St. Peter and Paul’s Church. Tom McGlynn, who was the “village cop” in Belle Plaine in his younger years, was back from Portland, Ore., to look up old-timers. For many years he was engaged in the lumber manufacturing industry in Oregon. Despite a dry summer, Herman G. Moenke could display exceptionally large ears from Minnesota No. 13 seed. The ears measured 12 to 13 inches. A ball game scheduled at Winona for the semipro state championship was won by Ed Eckhardt’s Belle Plaine team 3-1. When the minor leagues had ended schedules, Winona hired an aggregation from the Western and Mississippi leagues, and won over all other semipro teams until they met Ed Eckhardt’s bunch. A large billboard near a street intersection was the cause of a bad crash between a Fairmont and a Glencoe car right in Belle Plaine. One driver couldn’t see the other on account of the billboard. James Janovsky, 29, of near Union Hill, got his hand mangled in a corn shredder accident. Rev. J.B. Idstrom, pastor at East Union, was given a big surprise party by members of his congregation on the occasion of his birthday. The Tiegs families were at Plato for the wedding of Elmer Brinkeman and Selma Jensen. Lorenz Tiegs was his cousin’s attendant.
Dear Editor, It is National 4-H Week, again. I have celebrated 55 of them. I have changed a great deal in that time. My community has probably changed more. Going to school is nothing like my years except they have kept some of the same names. Chemistry is still chemistry but history is now a list of the events of my life. With all this turmoil 4-H has not changed its heart or soul. Children are taught life skills by doing activities that practice skills needed by adults. “Learning by doing” is the motto. Peers teaching peers is the method. 4-H went national in 1920 as an economic development tool. The local myth is that Elsie Leibrand and her neighbor Alice walked barefoot down every driveway in St. Lawrence Township to sign up kids for this new 4-H activity. Governors and congressman and business men and teachers and clergy have roots in our local 4-H clubs and the belief in 4-H leaders in the future. If you believe in a future, or more importantly if you doubt that there is a future for us as a community join a 4-H club. There is one in Belle Plaine. Its roots are over 90 years old. Your children will learn to make and carry out a plan. They will learn cooperation for a greater good. They will be exposed to Parliamentary Procedure. They will be better grownups because they joined a club where they taught each other that there is a bright future when they work in community. Larry Kiewel Belle Plaine
4-H Program Upcoming The Scott County 4-H Ambassador team invites you to explore Engineer and Design through the aerospace, electricity, Rube Goldberg and Lego Mindstorm Robotics project areas. The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Scott County Extension Office on the fairgrounds in St. Lawrence Township. The cost is $5 for 4-H members and $10 for others. You will leave with a completed aerospace project that can be exhibited at next year’s county fair. A healthy snack will be provided. Older 4-H members are invited to be teen leaders and parents are invited to stay and take pictures if they like. For more information or to register, call 952-492-5388.

Threshing in some nearby neighborhoods was reported finished, considered unusually early. The borough council made a tax levy of $2,000, of which half was for interest on bridge bonds. Milton Dairy Co. published a report showing it paid its patrons an average of 55 cents per hundred for milk during the month of July. Congressman Joel Heatwole was in town to confer with his political friends. The barn on the Michaels Eischens farm near Union Hill burned. All the hay and a colt were lost in the fire. V. Becker and family moved here from Jordan to open a meat market.

Dear Editor, Refuge from Home The European nations are struggling with its biggest refugee emergency in decades. The current migration is despairing with the magnitude of victims fleeing war and persecution. They are seeking safety and asylum, only to find that a clear path to safety has been difficult to find despite their heart-wrenching pleas for help. However, in our own state and nation, there is an ongoing refugee crisis; it is the crisis of victims of domestic violence, fleeing from abuse, seeking shelter and struggling to meet their basic needs. This year in Minnesota, 24 victims thus far have lost their lives due to domestic violence. Domestic violence affects one in four women at some point in their life, the abuse manifesting in the form of physical, verbal/ emotional, economic, sexual or any combination of these. Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women has been the service provider for victims of domestic violence in Scott and Carver counties for the last 33 years. We stand ready with commitment and compassion and are strictly confidential in our assistance with victims of abuse. We encourage those who are in an abusive situation to feel free to call us at 952-8734214 any time, 24 hours a day and/or visit our website at www. southernvalleyalliance.org. We are here to help you! We look forward to working with you and turning your flight into better way of life. Let us help you to transition into a safe, secure, and violent free future! Sincerely, Janice McCrady Community Outreach Program Coordinator Southern Valley Alliance for Battered Women

She was so kind and caring and such a great role model,â€? adds DeRocher. “I take pride in being present for patients and offering them emotional support. Being there in my patients’ times of need is my biggest attribute.â€? DeRocher graduated with her master’s degree from Winona State University – Rochester in Rochester in May 2015. Residents Invited to Meetings About Emerald Ash Borer Residents in Chisago and Scott counties are invited to public meetings in October regarding the recent discovery of the emerald ash borer (EAB). The Scott County meeting will take place 6:30-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Prior Lake City Hall. The Chisago County meeting is set for Wednesday, Oct. 28 from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Wyoming Public Library. The MDA conďŹ rmed EAB in Scott County on Aug. 25 after a concerned citizen reported a possible infestation to MDA’s Arrest the Pest information phone line. The insect was found in an ash tree on private property in the city of Prior Lake. On Aug. 6, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) identiďŹ ed an EAB infestation in Chisago County along the Washington County border. Two EAB were found on a survey trap in the area, and a follow-up visit found evidence of an infestation in a nearby tree. Those attending the upcoming meetings will have an opportunity to listen to presentations on EAB, hear about local plans to deal with the insect, and learn how residents can limit the spread of the bug. Experts from the MDA and other local, state and federal partner agencies will be available to answer
questions. The public will also have an opportunity to provide input on the adoption of formal EAB quarantines of Scott and Chisago counties. Emergency quarantines were placed on the counties in August when EAB was discovered. The MDA will take comments on the formal quarantines from Oct. 1, Nov. 15 and proposes to adopt the quarantines on Nov. 30. The quarantines limit the movement of ash trees and limbs, and hardwood ďŹ rewood out of the counties. The proposed quarantine language can be found at www.mda.state. mn.us/eab. Comments can be made at the public meetings or by contacting: Kimberly Thielen Cremers, Pest Mitigation and Biocontrol Unit supervisor, at Kimberly. tcremers@state.mn.us, or 651201-6329. Emerald ash borer larvae kill ash trees by tunneling under the bark and feeding on the part of the tree that moves nutrients up and down the trunk. Minnesota is highly susceptible to the destruction caused by the invasive insect. The state has approximately one billion ash trees, the most of any state in the nation. For more information on emerald ash borer, go to www. mda.state.mn.us/eab.

B.P. Teachers Seeking Mediation on Financial Terms With District
Having reached tentative agreement on the language issues in its proposed two-year contract with the Belle Plaine School Board, the school district’s teacher’s union left negotiations Monday saying mediation is needed to reach agreement on financial issues. The teacher’s union negotiating team, led by Luke Audette, told the school district negotiators the district’s proposed 5.459 percent increase over two years is not acceptable. Monday (Oct. 5), the board offered the increase – which amounts to an additional $293,000 for 201516 and $295,400 for 2016-17 – allowing the union to allocate it within the contract as the union sees fit. The union’s last wage proposal for 2015-16 and 2016-17 called for $540,483 in new spending the first year and $525,681 in new spending the second year of the deal. The increases are 4 percent in additional wages for teachers as they complete additional education and experience and a 4½ percent increase in the district’s contribution to health insurance annually. “The BPEA and the district have successfully reached consensus on many language items in our contract,” The BPEA said in a prepared statement. “We, as a union, feel it’s no longer productive to meet at the table. We hope to resolve our monetary disparity through mediation.” Audette said teachers have seen the district make significant financial investments in technol-
ogy and staffing positions the past two years. Audette pointed to the investment in iPads, the new superintendent’s contract, a full-time director of curriculum, a new administrator position at the junior-senior high school and increased spending on the new community education/activities director. Meanwhile, the district’s teachers have logged additional hours learning to make the best possible use of the new technology and participating in additional meetings creating and refining professional learning communities (PLCs) aimed at enhancing academic performance. The district notes the activities are time for which they are at least partially compensated for under the existing contract. Audette also noted the district is covering a smaller percentage of health insurance costs – about $1,200 less annually on family coverage. “We’re not making outrageous demands,” Audette told the board negotiators. “We want to keep teachers in the best possible position.” Director Mike Ludvik said the district’s position is financially limited. At its current enrollment and levels of state funding, the 1,600-student school district will take in an additional $378,000 in state aid during 2015-16 and 2016-17. He said even if the district adds no new money to the contract with the Belle Plaine Education Association, the additional costs in
School Board Absentee Voting Open Through Oct. 31 Voters planning to cast absentee ballots in the Belle Plaine School Board election have until Oct. 31, 3 p.m., to pick up their ballots and turn them in. The board has three open seats being contested in the Nov. 3 general election. Tracy O’Brien and Gary Steinhagen formally signed up to run. The third seat might be filled via a write-in candidate. Terry Kahle, a Blakeley Town-
ship resident, indicated a willingness to serve as a write-in candidate. Absentee ballots can be picked up and turned in at Scott County Government Center -- 200 Fourth Avenue W. -- in Shakopee. The county is handling the ballots because the school district designated the county as its official repository of absentee ballots.

the steps (experience) and lanes (additional education) schedule guiding teacher compensation will cost the district about $136,000 over the next two years. The district outspend revenue by $247,000 in 2014-15 and needed a budget adjustment of approximately $222,000 to balance its books for 2015-16. The contract the district recently negotiated with the union representing the district’s support staff (para-professionals, aids, custodians and clerical staff) will cost about an additional $147,000 for 2015-16 and 2016-17. “We can give you whatever you want and the cuts will come afterward,” said Director Matt Lenz, the board’s chief negotiator. Audette also reminded the board the BPEA accepted a socalled soft freeze that included no new money but advancement on the steps and lanes schedule back in 2009. That soft pay freeze, along with minor increases to benefits package in the following contract, he said, helped the district build a healthy fund balance that allowed the district to invest in technology and staff. Ludvik indicated the soft freeze came at a time when the economy was struggling and the state was cutting back and withholding funding. Audette believes the state’s economy has rebounded. Lenz said he respects the union’s right to take advantage of mediation and looks forward to future discussions on the proposed contract.

dropped to 4-3. “The goal for the week was to stay focused. Homecoming is an entertaining week and the kids have a lot of stuff going on, so it is easy to get distracted,” said Belle Plaine coach Justin Johnston. “I thought we came out ready to go. Our passing game finally got going and once again our defense played very well. I was very pleased with how the offensive line protected and asserted themselves. Defensively, we had an outstanding effort all-around. We were able to score quickly, so the defense ended up playing 90 plays, and to hold a team to seven points when you give them 90 plays is outstanding.” Not long after Narveson’s and Curtiss’ long scoring hookup in the opening seconds, the Tigers were back at it on offense as a 36-yard pass play from Narveson to Jon Schmidt helped set up a 1-yard scoring keeper by Narveson. Ruben Baltierrez, as he’s done all season, booted the extra point and it was 14-0 with 5:35 left in the first quarter, St. Peter answered on its next possession, driving 65 yards for what would be it’s only score of the game. Quarterback Avery Bachman accounted for the final yard on a keeper and it was 14-7 with 11:28 left in the second quarter. The Saints’ momentum from trimming the deficit in half was quickly extinguished as it took the big-play Tiger offense less than a minute to cover 63 yards, including a 23-yard scoring scamper by Marcus Walsh to make it 21-7 with 10:23 left in the half. After Nathan Herman recovered a fumble, Belle Plaine promptly marched half the length of the field, with Carter Brink covering the last yard for a touchdown and a 28-7 Belle Plaine lead with 6:24 left before intermission. The second half wasn’t nearly as explosive as the first half. The only score was a 4-yard touchdown run by Walsh that made it 35-7 with 5:09 left in the third quarter. Many reserves were called to duty after that. Belle Plaine racked up 394 yards of offense (244 passing and 150 rushing). St. Peter also had over 300 yards, the vast majority coming on the ground. Narveson completed 17 of 22 passes for 244 yards, a touchdown and one interception. Curtiss had five catches for 122 yards and one touchdown, while Johnny Vinkemeier caught six passes for 54 yards. Walsh rushed six times for 89 yards and two touchdowns. Carter Brink and Narveson both carried four times for 47 and 30 yards, respectively. Linebacker Alec Rudd was in on 26 tackles, including 11 solo. Josh Juaire was part of 16 tackles, including a big sack that resulted in the Saints turning the ball over on downs. Other tackling leaders were Dylan Johnson (15), Tyler Grieves (12) and Wally Schultz 10. Baltierrez, Matt Nelson and Danny McCann each had seven. Next up for the Tigers is a visit from South Central District foe and Class 4A powerhouse
Marshall, which has yet to be challenged en rote to compiling a 7-0 record this season. You’d have to dig deep into high school football record books to find a bigger point differential against its opponents than what Marshall has accomplished this year. It has outscored its foes by a whopping 350-7 (that is not a typo). The Tigers’ (Marshall Tigers that is) latest victory came at home against previously unbeaten Tri-City United 34-0 Friday night. TCU was coming off a 25-13 triumph against Belle Plaine the previous Friday. Marshall’s Jefferson Lee V had 17 carries for 213 yards and three touchdowns against TCU. He also had an 80-yard kickoff return for a score. Marshall’s victims prior to TCU were Jordan (68-0), Waseca (35-0), New Ulm (49-0), Fairmont (48-7), Worthington (62-0) and Albert Lea (54-0). In its first three home games, each of which were wins, Belle Plaine has outscored its foes (Albert Lea, New Ulm and St Peter) by a combined 138-27. Playoff Scenario According to Johnston, the Tigers are currently the No. 3 seed for the Section 3AAA Tournament. If they can upset Marshall Friday, they would likely move past Providence Academy (5-2) and become the No. 2 seed behind Glencoe-Silver Lake (6-1) “Win and we most likely move up to the No. 2 seed. Lose and we probably stay the No. 3 seed with a slight possibility of dropping to No. 4,” Johnston said. “If we are No. 2, we play Watertown-Mayer. If we are No. 3, we play Jordan. If we are #4, we play Holy Family Catholic. “Our section is really unpredictable because we come from four different districts, so strength of wins is tough to judge. Those are my best guesses as to what will happen,” Johnston continued. 2015 BPHS Football Results and Remaining Schedule Aug. 24 at NYA W 33-6 Legal Notices Aug. 28 vs. Alb. It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security benefits. A person can take a reduced benefit as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full benefit at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger benefit. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced benefit, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you benefit from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years filled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may fill only a limited amount of your financial demands. The anniversary service will include music by the Reformation Brass. After the service, dinner will be served in the school’s gymnasium. Former pastors and teachers at the church and school have been invited to attend the service and festivities. The theme of the anniversary service is “Rededicate to God’s Word, Rededicate to God’s Work,” said Trinity Lutheran’s current Pastor, John Meyer. The 125th anniversary service is a time for Trinity Lutheran’s approximately 900 members to take stock in where the church has come from, celebrate its accomplishments and look ahead to the future, said Ralph Malz. He and his wife, Deb, are leading the committee planning the anniversary celebration. The church was founded Jan.
26, 1890. J.G. Albrecht of Jordan was the first pastor. He led the congregation until 1892 when it met in a Presbyterian church until the new church was ready. It took the congregation barely 18 months to have its new church on West Church Street ready for dedication. The original church bell still calls the congregation to worship 125 years later. A small schoolhouse accompanied the first church. Trinity has maintained a school since 1891. Its full-time Christian day school began in 1944. The facilities are among the many changes the church has seen over the past 125 years. Among the most challenging adjustments came in the early1930s when the congregation began conducting some of the services in English as well as
the traditional German. That church served the community until 1967 when ground was broken for a new church and school. It is located a block west of the original Trinity Lutheran. The first plan for the new facility was rejected because it focused more on “cost containment,” according to a retrospective on the church’s first century. A committee then devised a second plan that was acceptable to voting members. It included the new school to complement the church. Scott County’s Tax Increase for Roads, Bridges Now in Effect The ½-percent sales tax increase Scott County commissioners approved last spring to fund road projects and transit capital and operational expenses went into effect last Thursday (Oct. 1). The additional tax is on all taxable items, excluding sales of vehicles. Instead, a $20 pervehicle excise tax will be applied when purchasing vehicles from auto dealerships in Scott County for road use. Both the sales and vehicle excise taxes
are to run through 2022. The tax is expected to generate $6 million annually. The county will use the money on projects that are nearly ready to begin or need local funding to complement state or federal money. A list of possible projects Scott County published earlier this year includes interchanges at highways 169 and 41 in Jackson Township, Interstate Highway 35 and County Road 2 (plus bridge replacement) in Elko New Market, the intersec-

The host team was the victor in the girls’ meet as Mankato West’s top five runners all placed in the top 12. The Belle Plaine girls finished seventh among the nine teams. Mankato West and Chanhassen both had 60 points, but the tiebreaker criteria favored West. Rochester John Marshall was a distant third with 122 points, followed by Mankato East (125), Austin (125), Rochester Mayo (127), Belle Plaine (153), Albert Lea (195) and Maple River (195). Emma Christensen of John Marshall was the individual medalist in a time of 17:14.
Belle Plaine’s top five in the field of 62 runners were Alissa Schultz (17th in 20:12), McKenna Herrmann (20th in 20:20), Danika Schroeder (34th in 21:14), Cassandra Stolt (37th in 21:17) and Sophie Mewes (45th in 22:00). “We had a fabulous day with 17 personal records,” said Belle Plaine coach Steve Schroeder when summing up all of the day’s races (boys and girls). “The course was short about 200 meters, but even if we added the time it takes to run the 200 meters, many of the kids had spectacular times. They had a great week of practice and are ready to see what the next few weeks bring. “Kellen Bergs, Kyle Siemon, Elliot Rudd, Dylan Bigaouette and Sam Gregory ran extremely well, finishing within 21 seconds of each other. Alissa Schultz and McKenna Herrmann led the girls, who all had terrific times as well. We are very excited for our upcoming competitions,” Schroeder continued. 2015 BPHS Remaining Cross Country Schedule Oct. 6 at Ney Nature Center Oct. 8 at Fairmont Oct. 20 MRC Championships at Baylor Park/NYA Oct. 29 Section at Monty Nov. 7 State at St. Olaf

Among the other teams scheduled to compete at Bloomington Jefferson on Saturday are Bloomington Jefferson, Becker, Bloomington Kennedy, Breck, Burnsville, Edina, Henry Sibley, Hibbing, Minneapolis South, Minnehaha Academy, North Branch, Nova Classical Academy, Park of Cottage Grove, St. Louis Park and Winona. Tigers 3, New Prague 0 The Tigers battled through some tough stretches to record a 25-20, 25-19, 25-23 sweep of the Trojans last Tuesday night at the BPHS gym. “You could tell the girls were a little wiped from the (Class 2A Showcase) weekend competition. Add to that the excitement of homecoming, and we were a little too relaxed in our style of play,” said Belle Plaine coach Cassie Koch. “With that said, it was nice to see them find some legs and push through to get a victory over a much-improved New Prague squad.” Statistical leaders for Belle Plaine were Mariena Hayden (16 kills and nine digs), Dakotah Poitra (10 kills and five digs), Kaylee Hentges (eight kills and two digs), McKenzie Koepp (four kills and two digs), Elizabeth Johnson (11 digs), Taylor Kruger (nine digs) and Danielle Taylor (21 set assists). night. “Right out of the gates the girls were tuned in and on fire,” Koch said. “Mayer is a tough place to play and we executed our game plan extremely well, not giving them much breathing room. They challenged us more as the match went on, but our defense and diverse offense kept them on their heels just long enough.” Hayden again sparked Belle Plaine with 21 kills, 11 digs, one solo block and four ace serves. Poitra added 12 kills, seven blocks and one ace serve. The other kill leaders for the Tigers were Koepp (6) and Hentges (5). Johnson and Taylor both had 10 digs, the latter of whom also had 39 set assists. Tigers 3 Waconia 2 Belle Plaine had to work harder than any of its previous 13 victories but managed to secure a dramatic 23-25, 25-15, 25-16, 23-25, 20-18 marathon win at Waconia Monday night. “This was an outstanding match played by both teams,” Koch said. “It was a night full of swinging away and keeping the ball alive. We were definitely challenged, and yet all of our players responded, making great plays at crucial points in the match. This was a great effort to see from our kids moving into October. They battled all night long, and deserved the W.” Hayden smacked 31 kills and also had 11 digs and four ace serves. Hentges added 12 kills and Poitra 11, the latter of whom also had three ace serves and six digs. Johnson had 27 digs and Kruger 11. Taylor had 53 set assists and 11 digs. Koepp had five kills. Edberg said his experience in the roundup was “incredible.â€? He plans to apply for the 2016 roundup, even though outside riders are encouraged to wait three years between applications.
Edberg (continued from page 1) young. They’ll begin pushing the buffalo toward a corral area. Not far from the corral area, a team of riders that included Edberg, awaited the arrival of the herd. The buffalo weigh in excess of 1,000 pounds. They can run at speeds up to 30 or 35 mph, Edberg said. “It’s very exciting to see them come over the hill, Studnicka said. She plans to apply for an outside rider position for the 2016 roundup. If awaiting the arrival of 1,000 buffalo running amidst a thundering cloud of dust doesn’t catch a cowboy’s attention, there’s the challenge of making sure the buffalo actually make it into the corral. The animals periodically decide they’re not interested in leaving the wideopen spaces for a corral. That’s where the wranglers and the outside riders go to work. Their job is to guide the buffalo into the corral, cutting off any attempted escape route and keeping them in groups. The work takes a skilled horse and horsemen, a team able to think and react quickly and stay calm amidst a sea of lumbering buffalo. Skilled wranglers armed with bullwhips try and keep the buffalo moving toward the corral. The crack of the whips, the pounding of hooves and slapping of leather against horsehide is a treat for fans of the old west. “It’s just incredible, Edberg said. “It’s a bucket list kind of thing. I’d rather ride horses than do just about anything. Edberg, 60, grew up in rural Belle Plaine. He’s been riding horses “as long as I can remember. Eydie is also a Belle Plaine area native. He heard about the roundup several years ago from a friend, Jordan resident Mike Kahn. Kahn has worked the event as an outside rider. Selling Edberg on participation wasn’t difficult. The event draws a crowd, though it always hasn’t been this way. Over 21,000 people watched the wrangler bring the herd in to the cowboys and outside riders like Edberg. Being the 50th anniversary of the Custer State Park Buffalo Roundup, this year’s crowd
was especially large.
Draws a Crowd
“We’ve had about 14,500 people each of the last four or five years, Pugsley said. He’s seen nearly 40 of the annual roundups. “There were years when we’d have, oh, maybe 4,500 people here. The event began drawing larger crowds in the early-1990s, shortly after the release of the film, “Dances With Wolves. It rekindled an interest in the American West, Pugsley said. The crowd, positioned nicely on a hill overlooking the prairie below, began growing in the early-morning hours of Sept. 25, two or three hours before the buffalo arrived around 10:30 a.m. Over the next 90 minutes to two hours, the 45 riders – outside riders and wranglers alike – worked to keep the Buffalo moving toward the corral. When a buffalo managed to elude a riders, members of the audience cheered. “It’s kind of buffalo against the cowboy, Edberg said. “When they get away, it’s a big, huge crowdpleaser. With the last of the buffalo finally corralled, the riders are able to relax and take stock of their work. Edberg was one of 20 selected from a field of 52 applicants, Pugsley said. The park service’s staff scours the applications to do its best to select skilled riders. Even so, some of the selected riders froze, unable to handling the intensity of riding amidst the herd of buffalo. Riders are told they can only apply every three years. But Edberg met some outside riders who have been selected more frequently. He plans to apply again next summer. “I hope to do this as long as I can, he said. The safety director for Ames Construction, Edberg knows the job has hazards. Eydie said the consolation of a terrible accident would be, “at least I’d know he was doing what he loved to do.
Pleasure Riding
The trip to Custer State Park wasn’t just for the roundup. The Edbergs and Studnicka enjoyed a few days of pleasure riding around the park area, taking in
the wildlife and natural beauty of the area. The group went on pleasure rides for most of the four days they were in the state park. The rides lasted several hours. Trail riding is nothing new for the group. They frequently ride along the Blakeley bluffs area. “We have such beautiful land here in Blakeley, Studnicka said. The trail rides also gave their horses the chance to experience the state park’s terrain and wildlife. With a fence separating the trio on horseback and the buffalo, the meeting was a non-event. That was the more enjoyable of the two meetings with buffalo. Wednesday (Sept. 23) of that week, the trio, along with some other riders they met, encountered two rogue bulls. The bulls had been separated from the other males. The group was riding along Centennial Trail, in the southern portion of Custer State Park. That Wednesday afternoon, the group came upon the two bulls. Before they realized it, the riders found themselves between the two bulls, in a vulnerable position, Edberg said. “They forewarn you to stay away from the bulls, he said. While some of the riders tried to draw one of the bulls away from the other group of riders, a group that included Eydie and Studnicka took shelter behind a tree, knowing they could not outrun a bull buffalo. A rider and horse are no match for a bull’s horns or its hooves, Edberg said. “It scared the hell out of me, Eydie Edberg said. “It all happened so fast. “At the time, it was scary, Studnicka said, recalling the warnings. “But looking back, we all think it was kind of a foolish thing to do. By riding up a nearby hillside, an incline the bull had little interest in, the two rogue bulls eventually lost interest in the group of riders. They eventually trotted off. The group agrees the round-up and meeting people from other parts of the country were the best parts of the week at Custer Stat Park. They’d like to go back again next year. “It’s really a lot of fun, Studnicka said.
Dancing Day and Night Homecoming Week is a time for dancing and that was certainly the case at Belle Plaine High School Friday. At top are members of the junior high class competing in Friday afternoon’s pepfest dance contest in the school gym.
