Belle Plaine Public, Parochial Schools Ready for Opening Day Public Schools Begin Second Year With iPads

Stier Transportation bus and van drivers (from left) Gayle Vinkemeier, Mary Stier, Rachel Melvin and MaryAnn Koonst are looking forward to driving Belle Plaine and area school children to class beginning Tuesday (Sept. 8).

New School Year Has B.P. Bus Drivers Ready to Roll Whether they are a rookie awaiting the boarding of their first passengers or grizzled veteran, the start of a new school year is always a time of excitement and anticipation for Belle Plaine school bus drivers. Tuesday (Sept. 8), Stier Transportation bus drivers will again take to the streets to deliver most of Belle Plaine’s public and parochial school students to school. The company has been making the rounds through the city’s neighborhoods and rural areas for 61 years. The team of drivers at Stier Transportation is a team of rookies and veterans. Rachel Melvin began driving last November. Gayle Vinkemeier started in March of this year. MaryAnn Koonst has been driving since early-1980s. Mary Stier has been driving for 37 years. Koonst and Stier are married to owners of the company. “There’s a joke that when you marry into the Stier family, you get your (bus) driver’s license before your marriage license,” she said. Melvin and Vinkemeier have spent the past several weeks preparing to begin their regular routes. They’ve been studying maps and driving practice runs on their routes to make sure they are comfortable, able to focus on driving and the students rather than worrying about missing a stop. “You have all the maps and make the mental notes about your route. When you make your dry run, it all comes back,” Vinkemeier. Her route in a yel-

low bus is primarily in town. “I found it surprisingly easy.” Melvin will drive a van to Glencoe to transport students to Cologne Academy. Stier Transportation won a contract to transport some of the area charter school’s students to the academy. The importance of her passengers is foremost in her thoughts.

drive on a road we don’t feel comfortable on,” she said. Koonst noted driving a yellow school bus has the advantage of being highly conspicuous. She said most drivers she shares the road with are courteous and respectful of her work. But she always takes time to be thankful for arriving at her destination safely, whether it’s the daily

Both the relative newcomers and veterans at Stier Transportation are looking forward to Tuesday. They enjoy the excitement of seeing youngsters starting the school year. “We really have good kids,” Vinkemeier said. For Koonst and Stier, opening day is old hat. But like their less-experienced counterparts, they appreciate the opportunities driving for Stier Transportation affords them. Drivers are able to bring their own younger children on the bus with them, making sure they get the school day started on the right foot, a perk that saves the drivers day care expenses. “This just really is a good fit for me,” Stier said. Stier’s route includes the gravel roads of the district’s townships and its rural routes. She knows the importance of safety when the season fades from fall to winter and the hilly gravel roads aren’t as easily navigable. “We have great support. There’s always help available. You can radio in. We’d never

It may not seem like the summer lasted an additional week, thanks to the latest possible date on which Labor Day can fall. But the additional time has given Belle Plaine schools’ staffs extra time to be ready for opening day this week. Some final floor waxing and other cleaning were on the docket for staff as teachers spent much of last week setting up their classrooms and attending meetings in preparation for the 2015-16 school year. Belle Plaine has several new teachers. In the public schools, just over 1,600 students are expected to arrive for class next week. Schools begins Tuesday (Sept. 8) for junior and senior highschoolers, Thursday (Oct. 10) for elementary students. The school’s kindergarten class has 135 students plus an additional 15 students in the ‘Begindergarten’ program, many of which may join the kindergarten class by the end of the school year. The district estimates Chatfield Elementary School will open with 386 students in the first and second grades. Oak Crest Elementary School will have 496 students in third through sixth grades. There will be 239 junior high-schoolers and 488

Connolly’s Death Still Under Investigation

Pioneer Power The Le Sueur County Pioneer Power Association held its annual Power Show this past Friday through Sunday. More information and photos of the event appear on page 2.

According to a press release Friday from the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office, the death of Belle Plaine public works employee Jerry Connolly remains under investigation. As for the cause of death, the press release only stated that “this individual fell into a wa-

ter treatment pool where he sustained multiple injuries and drowned.” The statement added that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Medical Examiner’s Office are still investigating. Belle Plaine City Administrator Holly Kreft said Monday that OSHA has been on site where Connolly was found dead in the late afternoon of Aug. 5 but has not yet released

results of its investigation. Connolly, 56, had been with the city for 23 years. He worked as the wastewater treatment plant’s licensed facility operator since 2009. He managed the plant from 2002 to 2009 before earning his operator’s license. Before being assigned to the wastewater treatment facility, Connolly worked for the Belle Plaine Public Works Department on the street and park maintenance crews.

Scott-Carver Project Community Connect Seeks Hairdressers Free haircuts top the list of most-sought-after services at the Scott-Carver Project Community Connect (PCC) event for those who are “living on little.” To continue to provide this service to those who attend this year’s event on Sept. 16, PCC needs more volunteer hairdressers. “Last year, we had 400 people attend PCC and 116 people received haircuts,” said Jennifer Romero of Cologne, who is cochairing this year’s event with Eric Gentry and Dan LauerSchumacher. “To meet the need this year, we really need more hairdressers who can volunteer for the day or any portion of the day.” The event for Carver County and Scott County residents will be from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, in the Canterbury Park Expo Center, Shakopee.

SouthWest Metro Education Cooperative provides hairstyling chairs and carts for the event. Hairstylists are asked to bring their own equipment. Anyone interested in volunteering to provide haircuts is asked to send an e-mail to ScottCarverPCC@gmail.com or call 952-237-1417. The Scott-Carver PCC event provides a wide variety of services to those who are homeless, at risk of homelessness, or in need of community resources. In addition to free haircuts, PCC offers free transportation, childcare and lunches. Healthcare services, employment assistance, education resources, legal assistance, veteran services, housing information, and assistance to obtain ID cards, driver licenses, birth certificates and access to other community resources are all available at PCC. For more information, visit www.ScottCarverPCC.org.

SCHS Seeks Sponsors for Upcoming Malt vs. Hops Event The growth of local breweries in our state makes it seem like we’ve taken a step back in time when every community boasted about their local brew. Here is your chance to sample a few of the new local brews, find out what goes into creating a unique beer, and learn about the history of brewing. It’s all about the taste. On Thursday, Oct. 1, beginning 7 p.m. at Turtles’ 1890 Social Center in Shakopee, guests will enjoy a social hour, followed by a lively presentation by Doug Hoverson, author of “Land of Amber Waters: History of Brewing in Minnesota.” The evening also includes the opportunity to capture a snapshot of the event in an “oldtime” photo booth, collect a souvenir pint beer glass to take home, and take part in a very unique silent auction. Proceeds from the event support the Scott County Historical Society. Sponsorships are available for this event at platinum, photo booth, entertainment, and part-

ner levels with various recognition opportunities. For details and to support the SCHS with a sponsorship, please contact Kathy by phoning the museum or e-mail at kklehr@scottcountyhistory.org, or speak with an SCHS board member. Whether you are a beer lover, local history supporter, or just like to have a good time, this is the event for you. Purchase a table of 12 for $540, table of eight for $360, or table of six for $270. Individual tickets are $45 for SCHS members and $50 for non-members (must be 21+ to attend). You may purchase your table or ticket(s), by calling 952-445-0378 or online at http://bit.ly/1JtMwQo Turtle’s 1890 Social Center is located at 112 South Lewis St, Shakopee, MN 55379. Carver County Warns of Ongoing ‘Spoofing’ Scam Carver County is warning area residents of an ongoing telephone scam. The attempted scam involves a caller contacting a victim and suggesting they overpaid taxes and asks if the taxpayer wishes to donate a portion of their refund. The call comes from a telephone number that appears to be a phone number from a Carver County facility. However, the call is actually being made from somewhere else, according to a Carver County spokesperson. The practice is called “spoofing” when the Caller ID displays a phone number different than the phone from which the

call was actually placed. “These phone calls are not from a Carver County representative,” said County Administrator David Hemze. “Carver County representatives will not call to inform you of a refund, ask for banking information, or request credit card or other personal information over the phone.” If you receive this type of call, do not release any information, follow any instruction, or call any numbers the caller provides to you. Instead, hang up and contact your local law enforcement agency and report as much detail about the conversation and the caller as possible.

of the 263 people who responded to the question found the cost realistic. With Valley View’s closed, 215 respondents said they played New Prague’s municipally owned public course, Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan, Montgomery National, Creeks Bend outside New Prague, and Glencoe Country Club. The Jordan course was the most popular alternative, favored by more than half the question’s 215 respondents. The New Prague municipal and Creeks Bend were also popular options with the former Valley View clientele. Sauter does not believe the area is over-saturated with golf courses. “They’re all making money, from what I’m hearing,” he said.

The Restaurant

The investors asked if a golf course’s restaurant was a factor in deciding where people choose to play golf. Only about 45 percent of 279 respondents base their decision on where to play golf on the restaurant’s bill of fare. “It’s Belle Plaine. Make it affordable, not fancy,” one person suggested. But other people are interested in the restaurant when, and if, Valley View is reopened. “Get a great menu, like Axcels, Barrio, Bunnys. Good food goes a long way. Don’t forget the happy hour,” one respondent offered. Another offered, “Look at Jordan’s menu. Nice selection and reasonable.” Still another wrote, “There is an equally valuable opportunity in the restaurant. In my opinion, it has never been managed effectively. Food, service, advertising, promos have rarely been impressive.” Another respondent wrote, “I believe your restaurant is the biggest seller the golf course has. Some may disagree but you can’t find that view anywhere else. There isn’t a decent restaurant in Belle Plaine and marketed well, I think it would go over extremely well.”

Thomas Sullivan of Faxon found a purse on the road containing $165 in currency. The owner proved to be a lady from Watertown who was most happy about its recovery. A big party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Huss Sr. near Union Hill was held to commemorate their 40th anniversary. Olaf Hanson, 74, who had built numerous houses and barns in the Belle Plaine area, died at his home in Carver. Expressing their concern over the “turmoil in the office of Scott County Attorney Kathleen Morris, the Scott County Board that Tuesday adopted a resolution that paved the way for the hiring of an independent attorney to give advice on civil matters to the commissioners and department heads of the county. The resolution, which passed unanimously, authorized the county board to “search for an experienced, competent attorney for the purpose of giving civil legal advice by contract on an interim basis. The resolution also noted that four of Morris’ five assistants had resigned their positions within the past week. Jon Kiemele, 16, who would have been a junior at Le Sueur High School that fall, was killed in a freak accident about 2:30 p.m. that Thursday. Police Chief Harry Thorau said the youth was sitting in the window of a 1981 Datsun pickup truck at the school parking lot when the truck flipped over on its side and fell on him. Witnesses said the truck had pulled out of a parking stall, backed up a considerable distance and then turned abruptly, flipping on its side. Calling it a “very difficult case, Le Sueur County Sheriff Pat Smith Jr. said that there were no new developments into the investigation of the brutal murders of the Wondra brothers of rural Montgomery. The bodies of Harry Wondra, 72, and Clarence Wondra, 68, were discovered about 8:30 p.m. that Friday by a neighbor. The Wondras were clubbed repeatedly before they died and authorities said the motive was robbery. Viella Crahan, 87, formerly of Belle Plaine, passed away Aug. 27 at the Arlington Heights Nursing Home in Fort Worth, Texas. Miss Crahan was born in Belle Plaine to John and Ellen (Horan) Crahan. She grew up in the Belle Plaine area, Rotary Foreign Exchange stu-

dent Richard Charles Allen said he felt his fellow Englishmen were getting a distorted impression of the U.S. from television and was looking forward to seeing what America was like for himself. Allen arrived in Belle Plaine that Thursday after an eight-hour flight from London. He was staying at the Fred and Joan Rogers home about six miles northeast of Belle Plaine. The number of swimmers using the Belle Plaine Swimming Pool that season was down by more than 2,500 visits to the pool compared to the 1984 season. Community Services Director Nelson Ladd reported that there were 9,505 visits compared to the 12,006 in 1984. Both the main and tots pools had to be shutdown for periods of time due to equipment breakdowns. Poor weather was also blamed on the sharp drop in attendance. Bonnie Sons, who held the Minnesota state record of 10:33 in the two-mile run, was continuing to distinguish herself as a distance runner at Iowa State University. Bonnie, the daughter of Tom and Geraldine Sons, who lived 10 miles northwest of Belle Plaine, and a graduate of Norwood High School, held the Iowa State University school record for the 10,000-meter run with a time of 32:50.79. The Belle Plaine High School football team lost its season opener at Janesville 14-0. Chris Fogarty led the Tiger defense with 10 tackles, and Jeff Bruder boomed several punts, averaging 42 yards per attempt. The Tiger tennis team was beaten 3-2 by defending district champion St. Peter and beat Shakopee 4-1. Individually, Sara Miller, playing second singles, and Sally Halbmaier and Molly Daly, playing first doubles, won both of their matches that week. Mn/DOT Installs High-Tension Cable Barriers Along 212

Aiming to improve the safety of highway travel, the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) recently completed installation of hightension cable barriers in the center median along Highway 212. The barriers are now along 212 between Highway 494 in Eden Prairie and Powers Boulevard in Chanhassen. They are intended to keep vehicles from crossing through the median and crashing into oncoming vehicles. Mn/DOT has been using the steel cables since 2004. It estimates the cables – three or four strands stretched between steel posts – have saved about 80 lives on state highways in the past decade, the Chaska Herald recently reported. Mn/DOT places the high-tension cables in areas it deems as

high-risk. It installs the barriers in strategic locations where the number of lanes is reduced and traffic is merging onto the highway, from lane to lane, or motorists are exiting, actions that can lead to crashes. The agency uses crash frequency, traffic counts and density of crashes to determine risk. There are about 60 miles of high—risk highways in the metro area, according to Mn/ DOT. A Mn/DOT task force addressing the barriers suggested all highways and freeways in the state have the high-tension cable barriers installed. A mile of the high-tension cables cost about $150,000 to install. A mile of concrete barrier costs about $500,000. As of November of 2014, Mn/DOT has installed about 450 miles of the cable barriers statewide.

Our sympathies to his wife Helen, and his family Susan, Bill, Jeff and their families. We’ll remember LeRoy as a man who cared deeply for his family, animals, and folks, people in general. When there was talk of some construction in the little grove at the Showgrounds, LeRoy’s concern was for the doe who had a fawn in that thicket every year. When he thought and talked, it was with concern and in the interest of others. LeRoy is already missed. Decontamination Unit Fighting AIS Spread at Lake Waconia Before launching a boat or watercraft into Lake Waconia, owners will have their equipment inspected for aquatic invasive species (AIS). Carver County has place a decontamination unit at the lake’s public launch to fight the spread of zebra mussels and other forms of AIS. The county has placed the unit at the northeast corner of the lake. If AIS is found on a boat or watercraft, owners have the option of properly removing the AIS and decontaminating the boat or watercraft, the Chaska Herald recently reported. While the cleansing is optional, state law prohibits the launching of a boat with AIS into a lake, according to a Carver County press release. The decontamination process is based on the form of AIS discovered during an inspection. Generally, it includes spraying down the boat or watercraft

Scott County CDA OKs Senior Housing Complex in Shakopee A 51-unit senior housing complex near downtown Shakopee was recently approved. The Scott County Community Development Authority recently OK’d final plans for The Henderson. The three-story building will sit above indoor parking. It will be built on 1¼ acre at the in-

tersection of Fifth Avenue and Sommerville Street, the site where St. Mary’s School once stood. About 60 percent of the units will be reserved for seniors living independently, the Shakopee Valley News recently reported. The remaining units will be

available to seniors needing assistance. The final plans reduced four units from the plans to crate more exterior parking space. The facility will have one- and two-bedroom units. It will have 34 exterior parking space and 47 indoor spaces.

Construction of New Gaylord School to Begin Next Spring Having won the legal challenge to a bond referendum voters approved last year, the Sibley East School District will finally begin work on its new Elementary School next spring. Construction on the new elementary school in Gaylord can begin in April of 2016. The district will go out for bids next month, a timeframe that will allow for ordering the pre-cast concrete for the building that will house pre-kindergarteners through fifth-graders. Sibley East will also begin renovation and construction work on its secondary building in Arling-

ton in the spring of 2016. The district is hoping for more favorable bids because it is seeking them for 2016 construction early, the Gaylord Hub recently reported. While the bonds that will pay for the bids came in $390,000 below projections, the district will face increased construction costs attributed to the delay caused by the legal challenges to the bond referendum in district, Appeals and Supreme courts. Inflation in construction costs will add an estimated $735,000 to the price.

The district is looking for ways to reduce the cost of the project both at the Gaylord elementary and Arlington secondary school building sites. The elementary school is estimated to cost about $18.4 million. The secondary building will cost about $24.4 million to renovate and expand. Sibley East Superintendent Jim Amsden said the delay caused by the legal challenges of the referendum has eliminated the flexibility of secondary students using some spaces in Gaylord.

District, BPEA About $800K From Deal

After nearly a month apart while the Belle Plaine School Board focused on the selection of a new superintendent, the district’s negotiations on a new contract with teachers resumed Monday evening (Aug .31). And after the two-hour meeting was completed, the two sides still have some work to do to reach an accord. Additional meetings are set for Sept. 21 and Oct. 5, both at 6 p.m. in the District Center. The Belle Plaine Education Association (BPEA), the union representing the district’s nearly 118 full-time teachers, proposed a contract for 201516 and 2016-17 that calls for $540,483 in new spending the first year and $525,681 in new spending the second year of the deal. The increases are 4 percent in additional wages for teachers as they complete additional education and experience and a 4½ percent increase in the district’s contribution to health

signments,” she said. “I am hoping it will streamline the learning for teachers, students, and parents, helping with communication, expectations, and the overall learning.” Chatfield Elementary School Principal Kim DeWitte said students will use the iPads to focus on reading and math this year. One of the bumps that will be addresses this year, Smith said, is a restriction on a student’s ability to download games onto an iPad. He said parents raised concerns last year about the devices being used for gaming rather than learning. This year, the district has adjusted the system to prevent the downloading of games for personal use. A student who downloads a game will find the learning-management system (Schoology) intended for their school use will be removed from their iPad. Without Schoology, students won’t be able to make use of the iPads. They will have to have the games they downloaded removed and Schoology reinstalled. “We are moving forward with a green list for all students. Each grade level and area are putting together lists of apps that will be placed on the iPads. The goal is then to have the students just work with those apps and not add any additional apps to the iPads,” said Oak Crest Principal Liann Hanson. “I am hoping that we can curb some of the inappropriate usage of the iPads. I think this will help a lot.”

Building Work

The district’s buildings saw minimal work during the summer. A roofing project in the northwest corner of the juniorsenior high school facility was completed shortly after BarB-Q Days. The old lockers in the District Center building were removed. They were last used in the fall of 2007, Smith said. On the District Center’s second floor, classrooms were converted to housing the Transitions program. A shared program with Jordan, it was returned to Belle Plaine from Southwest Metro Educational Cooperative in Chaska. The program will include as many as four young adults with cognitive disabilities as they make the transition from school to the workplace. The program is expected to grow by two students in each of the next few years. “They’ll be learning job skills and getting the support they need to get out in the community,” Smith said.

insurance annually. The union is also seeking increases for compensation for co-curricular coaching assignments and also additional compensation for summer school teachers. Overall, the BPEA’s proposal will cost the Belle Plaine School District about $8.7 million the first year and approximately $9.2 million in year two of the agreement. The teachers’ request represents a 6.66 percent increase for 2015-16 and a 6.07 percent hike for 2016-17.

BPEA Response

The BPEA’s proposal Monday was a response to a proposal from the school board back on July 29. It called for 3.26 percent increase (264,998) in spending for 2015-16 and a 3.09 percent bump ($259,246) in 2016-17. The board’s July 29 offer would cost approximately $8.4 million in 2015-16 and $8.6 million in 2016-17. The board’s offer includes $500 per step (education gained) and lane (experience) on the first year of the salary schedule plus 1 percent

for steps and lanes the second year. The additional money is intended to decrease the gap young, inexperienced teachers earn compared to veteran, more educated colleagues, said Kelly Smith on his final day as the district’s superintendent. The offer the school board presented back in late-July included a 1½ percent increase in the district’s contribution to health insurance annually and a 1 percent increase in pay for co-curricular coaching assignments. Smith, who is taking a reduced role in the negotiations this year, is uncertain if the board and his new job schedule will permit him from completing participation in the negotiations. The union dropped its request for paid time off (PTO) for most of its members to replace a schedule of vacation and sick time. The board is concerned about a BPEA request for two more personal leave days off plus a carryover of one personal day per year. “We want teachers in front of students,” said Director Matt Lenz.

Death Toll on Motorcycles Already Surpasses Last Year Forty-seven riders have died in motorcycle crashes in Minnesota so far in 2015, passing the total number of motorcycle fatalities in 2014. Forty-six riders died last year. With a few months left of the riding season, public safety officials are asking riders and motorists to make safety a priority to help prevent this number from rising. Motorcycle deaths are up about 47 percent from this time last year when there were 32 rider deaths. There is no specific reason for the increase in rider deaths; however, there are some common themes based on the preliminary investigations. “More than half of these riders weren’t wearing a helmet when they crashed, and nearly half of these fatal crashes were single-vehicle crashes involving only the motorcycle,” says Bill Shaffer with the Department of Public Safety Minnesota Motorcycle Safety Center (DPS-MMSC). “These are preventable. We strongly encourage riders to take a training

Belle Plaine Native Finds Her Niche in Documentary Family Photography The affordability of high quality cameras, the ability to capture endless digital images, and the unlimited opportunities to learn, grow and connect with other photographers online has made photography a popular hobby and creative outlet for many people over the last decade. Tonya Smith of Belle Plaine is among those photographers whose interest in photography grew from a creative hobby to a small business. “My goal with documentary family photography is to tell the story of the whole family, just as they are, during this season in their lives,” Smith said. “I want to capture the authentic moments that naturally unfold in everyday life so that families can remember not just how they looked, but how they felt.” Smith and her husband, Mike, are both graduates of Belle Plaine High School and are now happy to be raising their three children in this community. Her business name, Chevy Smith Photography, incorporates her maiden name, Chevalier, with her married name. “I liked the idea of the name representing both where I came from and where I am today,” Smith said. “I grew up admiring my parents who had their own business as farmers, and it

has been a goal of mine to follow in their footsteps by becoming a business owner.” Smith launched her photography business earlier this year and offers a unique type of session, which she calls “A Day in the Life.” These Day in the Life sessions are unlike traditional portrait sessions in that they are unposed and unscripted. Instead, Smith goes to a family’s home and spends a part of the day observing and capturing the family’s everyday moments. The end product is a series of photographs that reflect the beauty of the family’s life together in this moment in time. Smith has honed her photography skills over the years taking pictures of family and friends, from senior portraits to engagement, maternity and newborn shoots, to traditional posed family portraits, all the while capturing the everyday moments of her own children. It was through photographing her own family that Smith discovered her passion in docu-

mentary family photography. Those candid moments captured her children’s personalities and told the story of their childhood in a way that doesn’t always happen in a posed picture. Over time, Smith realized that other people are interested in this type of photography as well. She is finding that the “Day in the Life” sessions appeal particularly to other photographers and moms who, while they take many pictures of their children, often are not represented in the family story because they are always behind the camera. Smith recognizes that although documentary family photography is a rapidly growing trend, right now it takes a unique client to book this type of session. “It takes a little vulnerability and the willingness to share your daily life, but the results are so worthwhile. It is a way to preserve those fleeting childhood moments and capture the special connections between family members. It is such an honor when a family opens their home to me and trusts me to be their photographer.” More information about Smith’s business and a portfolio of her work can be the Chevy Smith Photography website.

Menagha came back with one unearned run in the third to bring the score to 2-1. Apply for Antlerless Deer Permit by Sept. 10

Firearms and muzzleloader hunters who want to harvest antlerless deer throughout much of Minnesota this hunting season are reminded they must purchase their license and apply for an antlerless permit by Thursday, Sept. 10, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources said. Antlerless deer permits are issued by lottery in designated permit areas. Some areas that have not been in the lottery classification in recent years are in that classification this year, primarily as a result of new deer population goals. “Hunters should review the hunting and trapping regulation book now,” said Leslie McInenly, big game program leader with the DNR. “The lottery applies to over half of the state permit areas this year, and it’s important to start planning for the season.” Hunters who want to participate in special firearm deer hunts also need to apply for permits that are issued by lottery, and the application deadline is Sept. 10. More information on deer permit areas and special hunts is in the DNR hunting regulaBelle Plaine’s Katlin Sannan has been moved up to the No. 2 tions handbook, found online at www.mndnr.gov/hunting/deer. singles spot following an injury to teammate Grace Olson.

The scoring in the second for the Tigers started with a single by Zellmann and a RBI single by Shane Hofmann. Belle Plaine got a second run in the third via a walk to Vinkemeier and a stolen base, followed by a RBI single by Zellmann. The Grays would finish with four runs in the fourth, highlighted by key hits from Jeff Fahey and Burgemeister, a walk to Randy Stender and a sacrifice fly by Brandt Vinkemeier. The Gray Tigers would like to thank all the volunteers who helped out to make the state

Tigers Win One, Lose Two The Belle Plaine High School tennis team had its ups and downs in what is always a busy first week of a season in recent years. The Tigers blanked Maple River 7-0 in the season opener last Tuesday before falling to Chaska 4-3 on Thursday and Blue Earth Area 5-2 this past Monday. Friday’s invitational at Farmington was called off due to rain and will not be made up. Belle Plaine, which hosted Southwest Christian Tuesday after this edition of the Herald went to press, is scheduled to begin Minnesota River Conference play at Jordan this Thursday. Tigers 7, Maple River 0 The Tigers opened the 2015 season at Maple River last Tuesday and had a blast as they blanked the host team 7-0, all in straight sets, Winning their singles matches for the Tigers (in order from Belle Plaine’s No. 1 singles player Ireland Lambrecht returned one to four) were Ireland Lam- a serve during Monday’s match against Blue Earth Area. brecht (6-3, 6-2), Grace Olson (6-4, 6-0), Katlin Sannan (6-2, 6-3) and Caitlin Preusser (6-3, 6-3). The doubles winners (from one to three) were Rachel Schroers and Bailey Gavin (6-1, 6-1), Sarah Luskey and Lauren Murphy (6-4, 7-6) and Kiersten Skelley and Gabby Malecha (7-6, 6-2). Chaska 4, Tigers 3 The Tigers hope Thursday’s 4-3 loss at Chaska is not a sign of things to come. The Tigers, who lost by 4-3 in 10 of their 15 losses last season, fell by that same score in just their second outing this season. They also lost their No. 2 singles player (Olson) possibly for the season due to an injury. “This was a very close match that could have gone either way,” said Tigers coach Annette Moylan. “Grace Olson had to forfeit her match because she fell and sprained her ankle and broke her wrist. She will more than likely be out for the rest of the season.” Winning their singles matches for Belle Plaine were Lambrecht (4-6, 7-6, 6-2) and

Grizz is a Kodiak grizzly bear that was shot and killed near Kodiak, Alaska, around 1970 by Gene Ulrich of Le Sueur. though, after retiring the first two batters of the inning, things quickly came unhinged for pitcher Dahlke and his Tiger mates. The Cardinals took a 2-1 lead after two thanks to two hits, two walks and a hit batsman. The bottom of the third inning opened with an error and contributed to three more Hampton runs, while the Cardinals batted around in the fourth to chase starter Dahlke. Gaylord draftee Trevor Vaubel’s magic from a weekend earlier appeared to have dried up as he allowed two inherited runners plus two more to score, making it 9-1. Vaubel was touched for two more hits and a run in the fifth, with Terrio and New Ulm Kaiserhoff draftee Nick Dewanz combining to work the sixth,

Belle Plaine added two more touchdowns in the second quarter – a 15-yard scoring toss from Narveson to Vinkemeier and a 25-yard TD run by Narveson to make it 42-0 at halftime. At the request of Albert Lea coaches, the second half was played under “running time,” during which the clock only stops after scoring plays, exchanges of possession and injuries, which made for a quick second half. Belle Plaine played its reserves the entire second half, against whom Albert Lea managed two touchdowns. The first was a 3-yard run by quarterback Jakob Kilby late in the third quarter. The other was by running back Jessie Hernandez from 2 yards out with 4:33 left in the game. Sandwiched between those scores was a 54-yard touchdown sprint by Belle Plaine running back Jack Fogarty with just under two minutes left in the third quarter. Belle Plaine was deep in Albert Lea territory again late in the fourth quarter but opted to let the clock run out. “I thought the kids played very hard and worked hard to prepare for a second game in five days,” said Belle Plaine coach Justin Johnston. “The defense did a great job of stopping their option attack and setting the offense up with great field position. Offensively, we thought we would be able to pass on their defense and we executed our passing game very well. We have been able to get a lot of kids game night experience this week and we will need that going forward.” The Tigers amassed 487 yards of offense (288 rushing and 199 passing). No statistics were available for Albert Lea. Narveson completed 11 of 15 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns. He was intercept-

ed twice. Carsen Ladd passed three times, completing one for 12 yards. Vinkemeier finished with five catches for 102 yards and three TDs. Schulz had three catches for 49 yards. Rushing leaders for Belle Plaine were Narveson (six for 84 yards and two TDs), Fogarty (seven for 84 yards and one TD), Walsh (three for 27 yards and one TD), Carter Brink (three for 27 yards), Ladd (two for 25 yards), Baltierrez (five for 23 yards) and Brenden Eyrich (four for 15 yards). Tackling leaders and their totals were Alec Ruud (10), Danny McCann (6), Schulz (5), Wally Schultz (4), Mitch Stier (4), Noah Ellignsworth (4), Jake Mercado (3), Walsh (3), Matt Nelson (3) and Tyler Grieves (3), Next up for the Tigers is a program they’re very familiar with – one that’s seven miles up Highway 169. That would be the Jordan Hubmen, who have squared off against the Tigers countless times over the decades as rivals in the former Minnesota River Conference. The Hubmen won last year’s battle 35-22 at Jordan.

The Tigers already avenged a loss against a former MRC foe on Aug. 24, trouncing Norwood Young America 33-6 after having lost to the Raiders 21-0 last year. Belle Plaine would like to do the same at Jordan this Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Jordan is coming off its first two games in which it was outscored by a combined 110-26, losing at home to Marshall 68-0 in week one and at Fairmont 42-26 on Friday. Jordan graduated all four of its all-conference players from last season, including Minnesota River Conference offensive back of the year Andrew Fogarty. Also gone are all-MRC running backs and linebackers Trevor Hentges and Derek Karsky, and tight end and linebacker Daniel Gutzmer. Both of the Hubmen’s honorable mention recipients also graduated. 2015 BPHS Football Schedule Aug. 24 at NYA W 33-6 Aug. 28 vs. Alb. Belle Plaine Batters Albert Lea

Belle Plaine catcher Pat Schultz got the out call on this play at the plate during Sunday’s second-round state Class C tournament game against Hampton at Watkins. Unfortunately for the Tigers, there were many Hampton runners who made it home safely as the Cardinals defeated the Tigers 11-1.

State Baseball Tournament

Hampton Handles Tigers by Brett Kruschke The upstart Tigers knew they had a tall task waiting for them in the second round of the state tournament, and the Hampton Cardinals showed why on Sunday with a thorough dissection of the local nine in Watkins. Belle Plaine took a 1-0 lead to the bottom of the second, but from there the “pretty birds” posted consecutive run totals

of 2-3-4-1-1 en route to a shortened 10-run rule affair and season-ending 11-1 loss. In future generations, Tigers not-yet-born may look back at this year’s 11-20 record and say, “How did that collection make the state tournament?!” But after bottoming out at 2-11 on June 16 after getting no-hit by the Prior Lake Jays’ Tyler Edwards, the The Tigers played

by Dan Ruud Two teams with common nicknames but unfamiliar with each other squared off on the gridiron for the first time in history Friday night. Fortunately for the Tigers of Belle Plaine, they romped the Tigers of Albert Lea 48-14 at the Belle Plaine Athletic Complex, making an already long drive back to near the Iowa border seem all that much longer for the former Big 9 Conference team. The loss dropped Albert Lea, which was winless in both 2013 and 2014, to 0-2 in the South Central District standings, having lost to Waseca 34-0 the previous week. Belle Plaine improved to 2-0. Albert Lea’s weaknesses of recent years were exposed early as the fumble-prone Tigers from deep south-central Minnesota were no match for the home team Tigers. After forcing Albert Lea to punt, Belle Plaine got the ball for the first time and took just four plays to go 50 yards, 32 of those coming on a 32-yard scoring toss from quarterback Luke Narveson to receiver Johnny Vinkemeier. The first of six successful point-after kicks in the first half by Ruben Baltierrez made it 7-0 less than four minutes into the game. Again, Albert Lea was forced to punt on its next possession, and again Belle Plaine got the ball at midfield. A 36-yard pass from Narveson to Branden

Belle Plaine defensive back Branden Schulz, in red, broke up this pass play during his team’s 48-14 romp of Albert Lea Friday night in Belle Plaine. Schulz was followed on the It doesn’t seem possible but next play by a Narveson 15- things only got worse for the yard scoring strike to VinkeH.S Football meier to make it 14-0 with 5:49 (continued on page 14) left in the first quarter.

.500 ball (9-9) the rest of the way. An extremely young team – with half of the roster in their first or second season – finally established their footing, and top pitcher Derek Dahlke also returned to full health down the stretch. When the chips were down in the region playoffs, the Tigers answered the call, beating Arlington 4-0 and upsetting St. Peter 3-2 to clinch a state berth. Defeating the Hadley Buttermakers in the opening round of the state tourney was an extra-sweet reward for what was, at times, a trying season. The emergence of “young veterans” like Dylan Nyberg at the dish and Josh Terrio on the hill highlighted a young, steady core group that holds it all together, with the three Schultz brothers (Pat, Mike, Matt) serving as the elder statesmen and anchors. Manager Mike Schultz is planning to write his annual He played just one half but that was enough time for Belle Plaine senior quarterback Luke “Year-In-Review” column for Narveson to run for two touchdowns, including this play, and throw for three more against next week’s Herald, so he will Albert Lea Friday night in Belle Plaine. cover these matters and more in greater depth. As another season ends, thanks for your support of all things “BP Tigertown.” Hampton 11, Tigers 1 Travis Latzke opened the game with a leadoff walk, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI single from Derek Dahlke. In the bottom of the first, catcher Pat Schultz – as he’s done so many times before – threw behind the runner at second to pick him off, helping post a first-frame zero for the Cardinals. The Tigers’ Travis Latzke stole second base in the first inning In the bottom of the second, of Sunday’s game against Hampton. He later scored to give Town Tigers Belle Plaine a 1-0 lead before the Cardinals scored the final 11 (continued on page 14) runs of the game.

Belle Plaine sophomore running back Carter Brink tried to scoot around a couple of Albert Lead defenders Friday night in Belle Plaine.

The Tigers’ Jack Fogarty, a sophomore, ran 54 yards for a touchdown on this play against Albert Lea Friday night in Belle Plaine.

KNOW & OBEY SCHOOL BUS LAWS School has started in the state of Minnesota. Motorists in the area need to be watchful for our small passengers. When you see a school bus, be alert that children are present, so use extra caution and be aware of the consequences of distracted driving around vehicles. Here is a break down of simple rules you need to know to keep children safe this school year: • Flashing yellow lights mean a bus is going to stop. A driver behind the bus must slow down, prepare to stop, and not attempt to pass the bus. In Minnesota, it is illegal to pass on the right hand (door) side of a bus with either flashing yellow or red lights. • When a stop arm is out, every driver, behind the bus or oncoming, must come to a complete stop 20 feet away from the bus. The driver cannot move the vehicle until the stop arm is retracted and the red lights are no longer flashing. Violators of this law are guilty of a misdemeanor and may be punished with a fine of not less than $300. REMEMBER STOP ON RED - KIDS AHEAD! Thank you for doing are part to keep our kids safe!!

REMEMBER:

School bus safety depends on all of us! Teach your child well!

Caution: The majority of children killed in pupil transportation are not killed on the bus, but outside the bus. Many are struck by motorists who fail to stop for the flashing red lights and extended stop arm. This area around the stopped school bus is often referred to as the "DANGER ZONE." If you fail to stop for a school bus with red lights flashing & stop arm extended it is chargeable as a gross misdemeanor punishable by a $3000.00 fine and/or one year in jail.

Trust the School Bus for the Best Safety for your Child

The Transportation Research Board of the National Academy of Sciences estimates that every year more than 800 school-aged children are killed as occupants in other motor vehicles or as pedestrians or bicyclists during “normal school transport hours.” Only about 2% of these deaths occur on the school bus, while 74% occur in private passenger vehicles. Most of these deaths could be prevented if children rode in school buses. Parents need to know that driving a child to school—or allowing them to ride to school with other teenagers--is not a safety smart decision—hands down, the school bus is the safest way to and from school.

WHAT BENEFITS YOU MOST?

It is up to the individual to decide when to begin receiving Social Security benefits. A person can take a reduced benefit as early as age 62. Or, a former employee can claim a full benefit at what the Social Security Administration considers to be full retirement age, which, for example, is 66 for anyone born between 1943 and 1954. Otherwise, a person can wait until age 70 for yet a larger benefit. Bear in mind that, once you elect to receive a reduced benefit, you remain at that level for the rest of your life (with normal cost-of-living increases). The longer you are apt to live, the more you benefit from waiting for the larger check. The current generation of retirees is more likely than the last generation to have active retirement years filled with a mix of travel, sports, and education. How will you spend your retirement years, and how can you fund those years? Social Security may fill only a limited amount of your financial demands.
