Michael Kroells Called on to Fill Big Shoes for Gophers Wrestling Team by Dan Ruud Leonard Levy, Verne Gagne, Brock Lesnar, Cole Konrad and Tony Nelson are all former University of Minnesota wrestling heavyweights who won at least one national championship. Levy won his in 1941, Gagne in 1949, Lesnar in 2000, Konrad in 2006 and 2007, and Nelson in 2012 and 2013. A Belle Plaine kid hopes to add his name to that list of grappling greats in the near future. The University of Minnesota has announced that 2012 Belle Plaine High School graduate Michael Kroells’ role with its wrestling team will greatly inflate for the 2014-15 season. “After training and working behind one of the best heavyweights in Minnesota history, Michael will step into the spotlight this fall as he will be the Gophers starting heavyweight,” stated a release from the U of M Athletics Department. “The Gophers have a storied history in terms of heavyweights and their successes in one of the toughest conferences and weight classes in the country, and Kroells will be no exception as he moves up the ranks.” Other Gopher heavyweights to earn All-American honors on multiple occasions (since 1990) include Billy Pierce, Shelton Benjamin and Olympic medalist Garrett Lowney. Kroells, the son of Larry Kroells and Laura Cunningham, and Lori Kroells, is replacing two-time NCAA Division I heavyweight champion Nelson, who completed his senior season this year. “Yes definitely,” said Kroells, when asked Monday if he up to the challenged. “I’m excited for this season and becoming one of the main guys.” Kroells said his wrestling and scholastics schedule have made it difficult for him to return to Belle Plaine often, mostly just Thanksgiving and Christmas during the school year – a little more during summer, which is also a busy time. Kroells is working as an assistant instructor this summer for Gophers head coach

Big on Studies, Too

Kroells was named the U of M’s Male Student-Athlete of the Month last December. He is an aerospace engineering major in the College of Science and Engineering. His write-up at the U of M states that he was “an incredibly strong student coming out of high school and has continued to impress in his time at the University of Minnesota.” Academic counselor Alissa Allen states: “Michael had another fantastic semester, achieving a 4.0 in very difficult coursework. He puts long hours into both his studies and his sport. He is an incredibly hard worker, and one who does everything he needs to do to be successful here at the University of Minnesota and life after college. I expect his academic successes to continue in future semesters. He is a true studentathlete.” Associate head wrestling coach Brandon Eggum said: “Michael is a great asset to our program. The effort he puts forth both on the mat and in the classroom have made him a vital part of this program. With these great leadership qualities, we have high expectations for him.”

Gray Tigers Drop Two of Three Games The Belle Plaine Gray Tigers over 35 baseball team played three games this past week, taking two on the chin against Prior Lake 4-2 and St. Peter 2-0. They came back to beat the rival Jordan Ahlers on Sunday in Green Isle 15-4. Pitching and defense is the name of the game as the Grays had four pitchers hit the mound this week, but even Gardy would say you have got to hit to win. The Tigers traveled to Prior Lake to face the 7-0 Mariners. The Grays sent out firstyear pitcher Mike Weller, who matched Prior Lake ace Mike Fier in performance until the fifth inning when he gave up two unearned runs. The seventh inning would give the Tigers a chance for a comeback when a grounder hit to first by Terry Knop caused Fier to pull his hamstring while covering first. Base hits by Burgemeister, Weller and Morrison drove in two for Belle Plaine. Then the first intensional walk to Brett Kruschke since little league brought Dave “Greek” Wagner to the plate. With the bases loaded, he laced a ball to short to make the final out of the game and hand the Grays their first loss of the season. Next, the Tigers traveled to St.

Peter to battle last year’s state champions. The Tigers sent Terry Knop to the mound to face St. Peter ace Kurt Moelter. This game was be a pitching dual into the fifth inning with a shutout going for both pitchers. But an error on a fly ball would lead to a run in the fifth for the Saints. The Tiger bats were baffled by Moelter the entire game and could not muster a rally. The Saints put the nail in the coffin with a run in the sixth to lead to the final score of 2-0. The only hits for the Grays were by Wulf and Zellmann. The local nine next headed to the fabled Irish Yard of Green Isle to play the Jordan Ahlers. The Tigers sent veteran lefty Brett Kruschke to the mound looking for his second win of the year. The Grays took a big lead with five runs in the third and three in the fourth on a combination of hits and walks. Kruschke baffled Jordan hitters until he ran out of gas. This found manager Zellmann making his debut pitching for the year and he gave up a hit before inducing a ground ball double play with the bases loaded to get out of the inning. The Tigers added six runs in the sixth to end the game via the 10-run rule. at

could be underway by the fall. The curling portion of the plan covers over half the anticipated cost. A curling arena – six lanes operating year-round -- restaurant and events center is expected to cost about $8 million, the Chaska Herald recently reported. The park renovation plan for Fireman’s and adjacent Schimelpfenig parks will cost $5 million. Schimelpfenig Park will have a horseshoe pit, playground, archery range and plaza where a VFW post’s members can retire flags. Fireman’s Park will also see the addition of a revamped beach and an interactive fountain that replaced the splash pad concept. There will also be a plaza with information on the history of the Chaska Fire Department and the brickyard that operated for many years at the site.
