Track & Field (continued from page 17)

a time of 44.83, well ahead of Watertown-Mayer’s Tyarra English-Paulson (45.55). 4x200 Relay Belle Plaine’s 4x200 relay team of junior Taylor Kruger and seniors Anna Donkhong, Alissa Schultz and Jenna Gatz had the highest finish among Belle Plaine’s four relay teams at state, placing third in Saturday’s finals with a time of 1:45.08. Blue Earth Area, which also finished ahead of the Tigers at the previous Saturday’s section meet in Mankato, also took first at state with a time of 1:44.38. Springfield was second in 1:45.04, 4/100th of a second ahead of Belle Plaine, which had gained the best qualifying time (1:44.79) in Friday’s preliminaries. 4x100 Relay The worst moment of the meet for Belle Plaine occurred during Saturday’s 4x100 relay final, which the Tigers were on the cusp of winning before a botched exchange 100 years from the finish line dropped the Tigers from first to ninth in the nine-team field. Minneapolis Edison, which was the only team that was a threat to Belle Plaine, won the state championship in a time 48.85, well ahead of secondplace La Crescent in 50.06. Belle Plaine finished in 53.53, which was almost four seconds slower than its time in the preliminaries and almost 2 1/2 seconds behind eighth-place Minneapolis North. “The 4x100 was running a tremendous race as we had perfect exchanges through the first three legs,” said Belle Plaine coach Rich Foust. “We knew we would have to have a lead over Minneapolis Edison going into the last leg as Edison had a very fast anchor (Jia Lewis). Going into the exchange, we had about a 15-meter lead, which would have been enough for Ally Fink to hang on. Everything looked good – the takeoff and the exchange – but the baton just slipped out. I think the baton was moist from the hot, humid day and we were unable to make a successful pass. That is the thrill and disappointment of the relays, and our girls were soooo close.” Joining Fink on the 4x100 relay team were Gatz, Donkhong and Dikmen. 4x400 and 4x800 Relays The Tigers’ 4x400 relay team placed eighth in Saturday’s finals in a time of 4:08.59, which was about 10 seconds behind

state champion Blue Earth Area (3:58.25). Competing in the relay for Belle Plaine were seventhgrader Lizzy Schmidt, Kruger, Gatz and Schultz. Also placing eighth for Belle Plaine in the finals was the 4x800 relay squad of eighthgrader Emily Berger, Schmidt, junior Haley Leger and Schultz in a time of 53.53. Minneapolis Edison, which replaced the Tigers as the Class 1A overall girls’ team champion this year, won the event in 48.85. Pole Vault Belle Plaine senior Bridget Egan, who had placed second at state in pole vault the past two years, slipped to eighth place in Saturday’s finals. Millie Klefsaas of Staples-Motley, who had to leave the competition for about 20 minutes to go win the state title in the 100 hurdles, returned to the pole vaulting area to win that event as well with a height of 12-0. “We had a great day on Friday as everyone (Tigers) made it out of prelims and qualified for the finals on Saturday,” Foust said. “Our three sprint relays ran very well with the 4x200 running a new school record on Friday. However, Saturday did not quite go as planned. While the end result was not quite where we wanted to be, it still was a successful day as all the athletes who competed earned All-State honors and received medals ranging from second to ninth places. Five of the girls – Ally Fink, Anna Donkhong, Jenna Gatz, Bridget Egan and Alissa Schultz – who competed this weekend were graduating seniors, and I cannot say enough about their contributions to the track team this year and previous years. They helped raise the bar and expectations each of the past few years and we hope to keep that going into next season.”

Boys 4x100 Relay

The Belle Plaine boys’ total time racing at state this past weekend was 44.88 seconds. That was the time the 4x100meter relay team of sophomore Brenden Eyrich, senior Christian Roell, Senior Ben Dvorak and sophomore Marcus Walsh finished at in Friday’s preliminaries. That time was 13th best among 19 teams, from which only nine qualify for the finals. Capturing the state championship in the event was Foley. The 4x100 relay was the only event the Belle Plaine boys qualified for state in this year.
