11:42.74 and will also run at state. Belle Plaine’s other state qualifier was Meyer in the high jump, where she tied for second with a height of 5-3, 1 inch short of Gophers basketball recruit Carlie Wagner of NRHEG, who won the event. Meyer placed fourth in the 100 hurdles and set a new school record in the event with a time of 15.66, which was one-half second behind first place but good enough by time to qualify for state. “The girls are section champs for the third year in a row and really separated from the pack this year,” said Tigers coach Rich Foust. “On paper, this should have been a much closer meet among TCU, Blue Earth Area and us. We had a great meet by all of our athletes that participated. Haley Leger really stepped up as she had a new personal best and moved our 4x400 relay team from seventh to third place during her leg of the race, while also closing to within a stride of the second-place team. Jenna Gatz then finished the race by moving into second and separating from the rest of the pack on the homestretch.” Girls’ Section Team Standings Belle Plaine (98), Blue Earth Area (68), Tri-City United (60), Fairmont (58), Martin County West (50), St. Peter (48), Glencoe-Silver Lake (47), Jordan (44), WEM (39), Waseca (39), NYA (29), LCWM (28), LS-H (28), NRHEG (27.5), Maple River (26.5), St. James Area (26), Sleepy Eye United (26), St. Clair (26), Sibley East (17), Minnesota Valley Lutheran (13), Mankato Loyola (9), Madelia/Truman (9), United South Central (9), Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity (1).

She also qualified for state in the 100 dash by placing second in 12.50, which set a new school record. Le Sueur-Henderson’s Kayla Stowell won the event in 12:30, and also won the 200 dash, the latter of which was done in a section-record time of 25.88. Besides the 100 and 400 dashes, Gatz will also compete at state in the 4x400 relay as the Tigers took second place Saturday with a time of 4:13.97. Blue Earth Area easily took first in 4:02.89. Joining Gatz at state in the 4x400 will be Amara Meyer, Alissa Schultz, Haley Leger and Selin Dikmen (alternate). Their nearest foe was Samantha Petry of Waterville-Elysian-Morristown with a height of 9-8. est contingents in recent years at state by qualifying in four events. Leading the way at Saturday’s section meet for Belle Plaine was Minnesota River Conference MVP Brady Johnson, who qualified for state in two events. He was one of three high jumpers who cleared 6-3, which earns each of them a trip to St. Paul. The other two were Zach Brandts of St. James Area and Kelly Nordling of Tri-City United. In the long jump, Johnson’s distance of 21-02.50 was also good enough to earn him a state berth. The Tigers’ David Schalbelski took top honors in the pole vault with a height of 13-1, which was 3 inches better than Christian Bevins of Jordan, who will join Schabelski at state. The Tigers’ other state qualifiers were Dylan Olson and Robert Nowak in the 110 hurdles. They placed fourth and fifth overall but their times of 15.77 and 15.80 were good enough to qualify for state. Tigers Knocked Out by NYA Legion Baseball Season Starts Next Monday The Belle Plaine Legion baseball team, which will be comprised of many members of this year’s high school baseball program, will begin the 2014 season at Jordan next Monday. The Tigers’ home opener will be next Wednesday (June 11) against Sibley East at Tiger Park. Next Thursday, Belle Plaine will host Montgomery, followed by Waterville on June 19. All the above games start at 7 p.m.

by Dan Ruud The Belle Plaine High School softball team’s run in the Section 2AA Tournament ended at five games last Tuesday when it was beaten by top seed Norwood Young America 4-1 at Caswell Park in North Mankato. The Raiders, who had beaten the Tigers 6-5 earlier in the tournament, advanced to face Maple River in the next game and won 7-0. On Thursday, NYA needed to beat Le SueurHenderson twice, winning the first game but losing the second to ace pitcher Carlie Brandt and the Giants in the championship game, giving LS-H its first ever state softball tournament ap-

Devin Schmidt Wins Again The Great Northern Sportsman Series (GNSS) opened its second season on Memorial Day at Columbus 151 Speedway and in many ways, the new season started the same as the old season ended. A constant threat of rain hung over race day in Columbus on Monday, eerily similar to the threat of rain that hampered the series’ final race of 2013 at LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway. Devin Schmidt of Belle Plaine was the driver to beat in the 40lap feature event. When the checkered flag flew on Memorial Day, Schmidt was tops among the 15 racers from three states, pocketing his second straight GNSS win. Another Minnesota racer, Michael Gilomen, led the field to green and took the initial lead. Schmidt, along with Johnny Robinson II, trailed Gilomen in the early paces. The first caution flag of the day was displayed on lap eight, bringing the field together. On the restart, Schmidt worked inside of Robinson for the second position, setting his sights on the race lead. The second caution was displayed on lap 13 and on the

following restart Gilomen was challenged by Schmidt for the lead. Along with Gilomen and Schmidt, fast qualifier Steven Sauer also challenged for the top spot after taking the high side on a ‘cone restart.’ Schmidt’s challenge eventually earned him the lead on lap 15, while Sauer’s high-side gamble came up snake eyes. Soon after Gilomen fell back to second, Wisconsin racer Chris Weber challenged for the runner up position. Weber inherited second and kicked Gilomen back to third. The final caution came on lap 27, giving the field one last chance at advancement. Schmidt and Weber broke away, battling for the lead while Gilomen now occupied with Dusty Mann. Mann blasted past Gilomen late, taking yet another spot away from the pole sitter. Schmidt guided the field after that final yellow, racing to the checkers ahead of Weber. The win was Schmidt’s second GNSS win, while the runner up was Weber’s best career GNSS finish. Mann ended the race in third, with Gilomen fourth. Steven Sauer ended a roller coaster day in fifth position.

pearance. The Giants will play Section 4AA champion St. Anthony Village 9 a.m. this Thursday at Caswell Park. NYA 4, Tigers 1 The Tigers grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but NYA, which split two games with Belle Plaine in the regular season, scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning and two more in the fifth. Raiders pitcher Natalie Stockman handcuffed the Tigers the rest of the way en route to getting the completegame victory. “I was really happy with the way the girls came out to start the game. We got on top first but just couldn’t get the key hit to really open it up,” said Tigers coach Jeremy Kalal, who announced last week that he is resigning from coaching due to medical reasons. “It was obvious that the girls came to play and watching them battle was a true sign of the team they’ve become. “I couldn’t be more proud of the way the girls battled all season and they definitely played their best ball at the end. We didn’t beat ourselves, which was our game plan. We just couldn’t get a break when we needed it.” Maddie Studnicka pitched

the distance for Belle Plaine, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits and one walk. She had three strikeouts. The Tigers had seven hits, with Kate Schmit and Kaylee Hentges both getting two. Hentges drove in the team’s only run. Also hitting safely were Elizabeth Johnson, Maddi Lark and Hailey Witt. Studnicka was the lone senior on this year’s team. 2014 BPHS Softball Results Apr. 8 vs. Mayer L.
