Weapons Screening Begins at Carver County Courthouse If you bring a dangerous weapon -- even a pocketknife you forgot in a backpack – into the Carver County Courthouse, odds are a sheriff’s deputy will quickly meet with you. The county recently opened a new secure entrance to the courthouse. The new entrance opened May 13 and is a $511,800 project. It includes an airport-like baggage X-ray machine and walkthrough metal detector. The entrance and circulation area was expanded to accommodate the new equipment, the Chaska Herald recently reported. Carver County Sheriff Jim

Olson said approximately 300 people were screened after the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the first day of the new system being utilized. He said people are “very open” to the enhanced security. The Carver County Courthouse in Chaska is the last metro-area courthouse to implement security upgrades. Scott County opened its new-and-improved secure entrance to the justice center last year. The security upgrades in both counties have the blessings of district court judges and county attorneys in Scott and Carver counties.

There’s Trouble at Monty’s WWTF

Montgomery’s municipal wastewater treatment plant is taking in too much waste from septage haulers and not charging enough for the services it provides to all its customers. In a recent report to the city council, Montgomery’s contract engineer, Karen Cavett of Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc., said the city is taking in far more septage than it should. One hauler alone dumped more than 1 million gallons in 263 loads last year – about eight times what the plant can handle for daily treatment, the Montgomery Messenger recently reported. The city council approved temporarily stopping all service to septage haulers. The moratorium on the service to septage haulers will last about two to three months, unless the plant stabilizes from the excesses. The city also needs to increase

its sewer rates. In 2013, the city’s wastewater treatment pant’s income for operations was $652,400 below its costs. It collected only $197,500 from its haulers. The council will also review the rates it charges for the plant’s services. And if all that’s not enough bad news, the plant needs about $88,000 in scheduled and unscheduled improvements, $125,000 if the work is put off until next year. Councilors were stunned by the flow of foul information. “How did we get tot his point?” asked Councilor Tim Siebsen. “We’ve been on the council for what, four years and this is the first time we’re hearing about this. We thought everything was going well and that we were making money hand over first (from waste haulers) and now this?”
