Motocross Racer Ryan Dungey Leaving Big Marks on B.P. of Belle Plaine. The news came just days after Team USA, which included Dungey, scored a runner-up finish to Team Belgium at the Motocross of Nations in Teutschenthal, Germany. Dungey ultimately popped the question to Siegle while in Barcelona, Spain. “She said YES! #Barcelona,” Dungey’s post said, which was accompanied by a photo of Siegle holding up the ring.” Siegle, a 2009 graduate of Belle Plaine High School, is the daughter of Dave Siegle and Donna Siegle. She and Dungey met several years ago at Annie’s Cafe in Belle Plaine. They plan to get married Nov. 1 in Chaska, with the reception in Minnetonka. They currently live in Tallahassee, Fla., where Dungey is able to take advantage of the climate to train yearround. While in Belle Plaine, Siegle said they spent a lot of time with their families and planning their wedding. “Ryan went fishing a good bit, also,” Siegle added. After spending the next couple of weeks in Tallahassee, Dungey and Siegle will head to Latvia on Sept. 23 with Dungey’s

teammates, Eli Tomac and Jeremy Martin – four days before the 2014 Motocross of Nations begins. “Following Latvia, Dungey will compete in a Red Bull Straight Rhythm event in California on Oct. 4, then the Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas on Oct. 18. “After that, we have the wedding, honeymoon and a little bit of time off from racing until Supercross starts again in January,” said Siegle, who is a personal trainer and is studying for her fitness nutrition certification. She also travels with Dungey to most of his races. Dungey’s father was an amateur racer and had Ryan and his brothers, Jade and Blake, competing as amateurs soon after they learned to ride. At age 16, Ryan, who attended Guardian Angels Catholic School in Chaska through eighth grade, auditioned his riding skills and was signed to a pro contract. Below are some of Dungey’s career highlights since then: 2012 AMA 450 Class Motocross Champion (Team: KTM). 2011 FIM Motocross of Nations Champion (Team USA & Overall MX1-class). 2010 FIM Motocross of Nations
Champion (Team USA & Overall MX1-class). 2010 AMA Motocross 450 Class Champion (Rookie Season). 2010 AMA Supercross 450 Class Champion (Rookie Season). 2009 AMA Supercross Lites West Champion. 2009 AMA 250 Class Motocross Champion. 2009 FIM Motocross of Nations (Team USA & Overall MX1-class). 2008 Entered two races in the premier Supercross Class and earned one second-place finish. 2008 Second place overall in the Motocross Lites class, with three wins and five second-place finishes. 2008 Second place overall with three series wins in the Supercross Lites West Coast Series. 2007 Fifth overall with four wins and one additional podium, AMA Supercross Lites East. 2007 Fifth overall with four podiums and two top-five finishes, AMA Motocross Lites. 2007 Awarded AMA Rookie of the Year for Supercross/Motocross. 2006 Seventh overall in the 250 class (8-8 moto finishes) in professional debut at Millville, Minn. 2006 Second place in the 250 class, Amp’d Mobile World Supercross GP at Vancouver, B.C., Canada. 2006 Won the Lites main event in the 250 class on the Saturday night program at the Fresno BooKoo Arena-cross.
B.P. Couple Growing Hops, Adding to Growing Beer Industry (continued from page 1) to clean up the land, possibly as a future place to build and retire. The 10-acre parcel was a planting site. It had a log cabin on it dating back to the 1880s. Its previous owners had planted several apple trees and flowers. When walking the 10-acre parcel with an in-law just after they bought it in 2010, the couple found hops plants growing. The plants had not been tended to as needed, but their presence gave Bob an idea. After doing plenty of research, they planted 80 hop plants on the larger parcel in the spring of 2011. In the fall of 2012, they planted another 60 hop plants on the 80 acres. “We didn’t know anything about hops,” she said. “We knew they go in beer, but that’s about it.” Because the cabin and building site make the land considered vacation property, property taxes in Aitkin County are “fairly high.” Initially, Deb Stoffel said, they hoped initially to cover the cost of establishing the crop and the property taxes. The couple’s 140 plants include five different types of hop plants – Nugget, Cascade, Chinook, Brewer’s Gold and Spalt Select. The different types of hop plants have different characteristics. By the fifth year, hop plants reach the peak of production. Each plant can produce up to about 12 pounds of hops in its fifth year, Bob said.
Not Low Maintenance
They assumed hop plants are a low-maintenance plant, something requiring little attention between planting and harvest. The Minnesota Hops Growing Association (MHGA) warns people interested in growing hops that properly establishing a hops yard can cost up to $10,000 per acre. A good crop can bring up to $20,000 an acre. “Be advised,” the association warns in its brochure. “It is not easy money.” “A lot of people don’t realize that,” Deb Stoffel said. The couple hopes to recover their initial investment by 2016. In fact, hop plants require plenty of attention to enjoy a better yield. Hops grow best on a trellis. They planted 20 plants per 100foot row. The plants need to be “trained” to climb the trellis reaching up to 18 feet tall. Using wires, they grow in circles in a clockwise direction for the best results, Deb said. “It’s very different,” Bob said. “You have to prune them, train them to keep them growing in the right direction.” They also learned that at harvest, removing the individual hops from a vine is easy, but about one-fourth of the crop came off the vine in clumps and had to be separated by hand. Overall, it took them almost
A high-maintenance endeavor, hops grow on a vine up to 18 feet tall. The Stoffels needed about three days to harvest this year’s crop. three days to completely harvest and dry out 100 plants, Deb Stoffel said. The couple knows their efficiency will increase as they learn more. The Stoffels have learned valuable lessons and gained plenty of important information from members of the Minnesota Hops Growers Association. But this year, the couple learned a tough lesson. The cool, damp summer facilitated a form of mildew that brought on an early maturity. Typically, hop plants are harvested in mid-September. The mildew forced the Stoffels to harvest their plants over Labor Day weekend. “We lost two rows this year,” Bob said. The Nugget variety took the biggest hit, he said. But if the loss of 40 plants was the worst part of the year, Bob Stoffel said the precious information he and his wife gained from MHGA members has taken some of the sting out of the setback. The association routinely presents information in print and through seminars to assist its members.
Local Assistance
The couple also got a break this year when Jeff Luskey, one of the owners of U4IC Brewery in Blakeley agreed to buy the Stoffels’ hops crop for the year. Luskey said the various types of hops the couple grew and harvested would be useable in upcoming batches of beer. Because he does not yet have Scott County’s OK to brew and distribute beer from the Blakeley brewery, Luskey plans on freezing the hops he purchased from Stoffels. Luskey hopes to have all the permits needed before winter sets in, he said. Luskey said the quality of the hops the Stoffels produced is
good for a young hops yard. He looks forward to seeing subsequent harvests. His decision to buy their crop is primarily to support a local grower. A year ago, the Stoffels attracted interest in their hops crop from master brewers in Duluth. Like Luskey, Bob Stoffel said, they believe in working locally. Bob is a heavy equipment mechanic for a local contractor. He may retire in the next five years or so. He grew up on a dairy farm near St. Peter and never minded the hard work. But making a small farm financially viable was more than he wanted to take on. Growing hops gives Bob “his farming fix,” Deb said. “I guess you can take the boy off the farm, but you can’t take the farm from the boy,” he said.
