The British Museum The British Museum is one of the largest and most important museums in the world. It was founded in 1753 The Rosetta Stone is one of the most important objects in the museum, as it holds the key to understanding Egyptian hieroglyphs a script made up of small pictures that was used originally in ancient Egypt for religious texts, It is a tablet of black rock called granodiorite. It is part of a larger inscribed stone that would have stood about 2 metres high. The inscriptions are three translations of the same decree, passed by a council of priests, that affirms the royal cult of the thirteen-year-old Ptolemy V on the first anniversary of his coronation.:These form three distinct bands of writing. The top band consists of fourteen lines of hieroglyphs, the middle band is made up of thirty-two lines of a curvilinear script called demotic which was the everyday language in ancient Egypt. At the bottom there are over fifty lines of tightly compressed Greek writing. The Ancient Egypt Galleries The Egyptian sculptures were carved so as to highlight the face of
the sculpture. The statues were all painted, except for those of the nobles which were colourless. The pharaohs were the most sculptured subjects. The Egyptian sarcophagus was the coffin which was intended to guard the embalmed body of the deceased. The shapes, materials and decoration varied according to the historical ages and religious customs that had evolved with the times. A mummy was a body in which the soft tissues were preserved for climatic reasons. The ancient Egyptian culture believed that the body once dead was relived in its soul. The Palace of Westminster is located on the north bank of the Thames in the City of Westminster, close to other government buildings in Whitehall. The oldest part of the building still in existence, is Westminster Hall,which dates back to 1097. The original purpose of the palace was as a royal residence, but no monarch has lived there since the sixteenth century. Since 1994, Big Ben has been illuminated by a system of 112 bulbs Hyde Park is one of the largest parks in central London. It is one of the Royal Parks and is also known for its Speakers' Corner. The park is divided into two parts by the artificial lake and the Serpentine is contiguous with Kensington Gardens, which are commonly regarded as a part of Hyde Park, although in reality the two parks are officially separated. It has within it, in addition to a police station, even businesses, some cafès, sports fields, playgrounds and other centres.
