ENGLISH-LITHUANIAN-ITALIAN PHRASEBOOK
Lithuanian language Lithuanian is one of the two living Baltic languages, along with Latvian. Lithuanian is considered to be the oldest surviving Indo-European language and is thought to have retained some features of Proto-Indo-European such as pitch-accent and a complex inflexional case system. Some words in Lithuanian resemble words in Sanskrit and Latin. Lithuanian first appeared in print in the form of a catechism in 1547. The first Lithuanian dictionary was printed during the 17th century. Between 1864 and 1904 the printing and teaching of Lithuanian was banned - Russian, Polish, Belorussian or Latin had to be used instead. After this ban was lifted in 1904, there was a resurgence of Lithuanian literature. Lithuanian is spoken mainly in Lithuania. It is also spoken by ethnic Lithuanians living in today's Belarus Latvia, Poland, and the Kaliningrad region of Russia, as well as by sizable emigrant communities in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Russia, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uruguay, and Spain. The total worldwide Lithuanianspeaking population is about 4,000,000. Lithuanian is the state language of Lithuania and an official language of the European Union. Lithuanian uses the Latin alphabet supplemented with diacritics (e.g. ž, ū, ė, į). It has 32 letters. Lithuanian alphabet and pronunciation:
Lithuanian is highly inflected. Nouns have seven cases. Gender is masculine and feminine. Number is singular and plural; some dialects also have a dual number (for two items). The article is not used. Four simple verb tenses (present, past, frequentive past, and future) are used.
Italian language The Italian language derives from vulgar Latin. In 2 nd century AD, when Rome lived its peak, it imposed its law and language on people conquered. With the fall of the western Roman Empire in 476 AD, the different kinds of vulgar Latin that lived in the conquered areas, changed into creating new languages. Every of this derived from Latin, but with different features. So the Romance languages, like Italian, French, Spanish, Catalan, Romanian, and Ladin, originated. In Italy Latin remained more than in the other countries, but with time it spilt in a lot of dialects that took the name of “vulgar”. The Florentine dialect predominated on all others and today it is considered the origin of the Italian language. The Italian alphabet was composed by 21 letters, but the 5 foreign letters today are considerated part of its. The nouns have two genders: masculine and feminine and there are six definite article. (il, lo, la, le, gli, i) and three indefinite (un, uno, una). Number is singular and plural. Eight complete verb tenses (present, present perfect, past perfect, two type of simple past, imperfect, simple future, future perfect) and three uncomplete verb tenses (gerund, participle, infinitive) are used.
