• This big snake is about 4.2 kilometres long and between 3 and 5 metres deep. It divides the city in two parts : • On one side the sestieri of Dorsoduro, San Polo and Santa Croce • On the other side Cannaregio,Castello and San Marco • It has only four big bridges crossing it.



The most ancient palaces were built in the VenetianByzantine style.They have the ancient fondaco (warehouse) structure; they are houses with a loggia on the first floor and a portico on the ground floor.


The palaces built in the Gothic style like Palazzo Ducale or Ca’ Foscari, display refined and precious decorations which look like elegant lace.


In the palaces of Renaissance style, like Ca’ Grimani or Ca’ Vendramin Calergi, the façades are inspired by the classical ancient Greek and Roman style, both in shape and harmonious proportions


With the triumph of the Baroque style, palaces were built with an eye for scenic effects. In such buildings as Ca’ Rezzonico or Ca’ Pesaro, on the façade decorated with mascheroni, the play of light and shade is accentuated.


Venetian cuisine offers a wealth of appetizing and delicious recipes : • Risotto: called “all’onda” for its creamy appearance; • The carpaccio: (thin slices of raw meat seasoned with oil, lemon and scales of parmesan cheese) • Venetian-style liver: (cooked with onions ) • Polenta • Seafood dishes galore.


They are a kind of fritters eaten at Carnival; the dough is mixed with pine seeds and raisins. There are three different kinds of fritola: • With crema pasticcera • With zabaione • With no filling


They are a traditional Carnival sweet, made with thin fried dough, powdered with icing sugar.


The name of these typical Venetian biscuits comes from the yellow corn flour with which they are made.


 The gondola has been the typical boat for more than one thousand years. It was mainly used for transporting people, connecting the various parts of the town, which once had a lot more canals and less bridges. Today it is especially popular with the tourist visiting Venice.


He is the oarsman who rows “Venetian style�, that is standing and using just one oar. He wears a straw hat, black trousers and a striped shits.


It is a six-toothed decorative piece symbolizing the six “sestieri” into which the town is divided: Castello, San Marco, Cannaregio, Dorsoduro, San Paolo, Santa Croce. The seventh tooth on the other side represents the Giudecca island. The curved part above the teeth has the shape of the doge’s hat, symbol of the power and protection exercised over the city.
