hello...
Directory Moreton Hall
…and welcome to the October edition of the Moreton Hall Directory. This month, we’ll mostly be walking around the office being all ‘spooky’ in readiness for Halloween on the 31st... However you’re celebrating, don’t forget to be considerate for older residents who may not appreciate the blood curdling shenanigans quite as much as we do here!
Gemma Walters Editor halldirectory.com gemma@moreton
We’ll also be getting a teensy bit excited about the countdown to Christmas! If, like us, you simply cannot wait, there is an early Christmas Fayre at Moreton Hall Prep School in November, so pop the date in your diary now so you can stock up on some early stocking fillers - see page 39 for details. Sally Walters Contributor sally@gemm awalters.co .uk
Autumn is one of our favourite months for a bit of a splurge on some new wardrobe basics, so check out some of the best fashion from a shop near you on pages 18-19. Is it just me who struggles to stay upright whilst doing basic things like walking...? If you are also of the ‘falling over variety’ I hope you’ll enjoy my article on page 38 where I share some of my slightly more embarrassing moments. We have lots of local businesses on board this month, and if ever there was a best edition to keep hold of for future reference, this is definitely one of them. You never know when you may just need one of our many approved suppliers, so keep it somewhere safe. Hope you have a fantastic month and we’ll see you in November!

We’re dreaming of a slim Christmas! We’re all familiar with the 12 days of Christmas but one Bury St Edmunds slimming club is celebrating the 12 weighs of Christmas. Members of the Moreton Hall Slimming World groups are getting into the Yuletide spirit early this year as they embark on a festive mission, to lose a stone or more in the 12 weeks before the party season. More than 60% of Bury St Edmunds’s population are overweight or obese – so Slimming World is launching its Countdown to Christmas campaign with a promise to help anyone in Bury St Edmunds who wants to slim down for Christmas to make their weightloss wish come true! The campaign will launch with a ‘Christmas comes early’ party and everyone’s invited! “With 12 weeks to go to Christmas, there’s still plenty of time to hit the party season a dress size smaller, or even more,” says Helen Silver, who runs the evening group. “Many of us may have ended the summer a few pounds heavier than we were at the start, but there’s no need to give up hope of fitting into your favourite party dress or tux. We’re holding this party to get show that it’s

possible to easily lose a stone or more in three months – by making small, easy changes to eating and activity. “We all love Christmas because it’s a time for giving and sharing, and at Slimming World we share every week with support and encouragement to help each other reach our weight loss goals. A party is a fun – and festive – way to remind everyone that there’s still time to lose weight for Christmas without having to go to drastic measures. Feeling happy, healthy and full of confidence could be the best present you’ll ever give yourself. “Anyone who wants to make their Christmas slimming wishes come

Director, The Self Centre
This month we learn about Parkinsons Disease and some interesting research on it. Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurological disorder thought to affect one or two people in every 1000. It’s named after Dr James Parkinson, the Scottish physician who first described it as the ‘shaking palsy’ in an 1817 essay. Although it’s been around for some time, modern medicine is still baffled by the condition. The symptoms—including tremors, muscle rigidity and slowed movements—can so closely resemble a number of other disorders that PD is, in fact, notoriously difficult to diagnose. Possible causes Medicine is also confused as to what exactly causes PD. The symptoms are thought to arise from a lack of the chemical messenger dopamine in the brain, which happens when the specific brain cells that produce it die or become impaired. However, researchers still don’t know what triggers such a chain of events in the first place. Indeed, what’s emerging is that environmental factors throughout life—such as what we eat, where we live and what we do for a living—are crucial pieces of the puzzle. So far, it appears that exposures to particular toxins or foods can increase the risk of PD. Pesticides. Numerous animal and human studies link pesticides to PD. People living within 500 metres of land sprayed with pesticides have a 75-per-cent increased chance of developing the disease. In addition, those exposed to
10
themhd
agricultural pesticides as a child or young adult have an even greater risk (Am J Epidemiol, 2009;169: 919–26). I had a lady recently at one of my Intro to Yoga classes who was experiencing the beginnings of Parkinsons and she swore that it was because she lived on a farm when she was young and used to love chasing the crop spraying planes across the fields. It would make sense therefore to also avoid your exposure to pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables by washing thoroughly, peeling the skins where possible or by buying as much organic as you can (particularly potatoes and carrots apparently!) Household pesticide use is also associated with PD. US researchers reported that using insecticides and herbicides in your home or garden can double your risk of developing the disease (Lancet, 2000; 335: 1701; h t t p: / / n e w s. b b c. c o. u k / 2 / h i / health/738020.stm). Let’s try and get back to making our own cleaners and using more natural gardening methods? Heavy metals. One study found that those with the highest lifetime lead exposures are twice as likely to have PD as those with the lowest exposures (Environ Health Perspect, 2006; 114: 1872–6). Other metals, including aluminium, mercury, copper, manganese and iron, may also be risk factors (Neuroepidemiol-ogy, 1999; 18: 303–8). Dairy. Harvard researchers found that high intakes of dairy foods nearly doubled the risk of PD in
men (Ann Neurol, 2002; 52: 793– 801), and there’s a slightly increased risk in women, too (Am J Epidemiol, 2007; 165: 998– 1006). Preventing Parkinson’s These data suggest that lifestyle changes, such as choosing organic fruit, limiting dairy, and avoiding pesticides and other toxic chemicals, may help to prevent PD. Also, drinking tea (CNS Neurosci Ther,2008; 14: 352–65), taking regular exercise (Mov Disord, 2008; 23: 69–74) and maintaining a healthy weight (Neurology, 2006; 67: 1955–9) all appear to reduce PD risk. Interestingly, experts now reckon that genes alone are responsible for less than 10 per cent of PD cases—and even then, the environment may play a part (Environ Health Perspect, 2009; 117: 117–21). It’s likely that environmental factors, such as diet and pesticide exposure, interact with genes to bring about the disease, suggesting that, with more research, the vast majority of cases may be preventable. Possible remedies and treatments Although there’s no cure for Parkinson’s disease (PD), its symptoms and quality of life can be improved; however, only attempt the following under medical supervision. Supplements. These appear to be beneficial for PD. Coenzyme Q10. PD patients have reduced levels of this antioxidant in
health&beauty
their blood and brain (Neurosci Lett, 2008; 447: 17–9). In those with early PD, 1200 mg/ day of CoQ10 for 16 months significantly slowed the course of the disease compared with a placebo (Arch Neurol, 2002; 59: 1541–50). B vitamins. It’s been observed that those who have a high intake of vitamin B6 have a lower risk of PD (Neurology, 2006; 67: 315–8). B6 supplements, therefore, may be useful for those in the early stages of the disease (although this vitamin should not be taken by people who have heart conditions). Vitamins C and E. In patients with early PD, high doses of these antioxidants (750 mg of ascorbate and 800 IU of alpha-tocopherol, four times a day) delayed the need for L-dopa by an average of around 2.5 years (Ann Neurol, 1992; 32 Suppl: S128–32). Amino acids. In one small trial, three weeks of treatment with the
amino acid L-methionine improved rigidity, tremor and other symptoms in previously untreated PD patients. (Rev Neurol [Paris], 1982; 138: 297–303). Other possibly helpful amino acids are L-tryptophan (in conjunction with L-dopa) and L-tyrosine (Int J Neurosci, 1989; 45: 215–9; C R Acad Sci III, 1989; 309: 43–7). Acupuncture. A US study found that two sessions a week for an average of around six weeks led to improvements in tremor, walking, handwriting, slowness, pain, sleep, depression and anxiety in 85 per cent of the study participants. What’s more, there were no adverse effects from the treatment (Mov Disord, 2002;17: 799–802). Exercise. Physical activity appears to be beneficial for PD patients by improving their physical performance and activities of daily living (Clin J Sport Med,
2006; 16: 422–5). In particular, it can help with balance, thereby potentially reducing the risk of falls (J Neurol Phys Ther, 2009; 33: 14–26). Detox. As toxins such as pesticides and heavy metals are thought to be involved in the development of PD, encouraging their removal from the body may be helpful. Never do a detox without the advice of a Naturopath or Nutritionist and remember many other cultures consider fasting a very beneficial process for the body, it’s only us westerners who get funny about it! With thanks to What Doctors Don’t Tell You (www.wddty.com) and particularly to the article written by Joanna Evans. Eat Your Way to Healthier
Hair
We are what we eat and that applies to our hair too. Hair products help, of course, but nutritionists and beauty experts tell us that healthy hair begins from the inside out. Building blocks for great tresses include protein, Omega-3 fats, iron, biotin and foods that contain Vitamins A and C that help our bodies produce sebum, our natural hair conditioner. Exercising is also key. Consistent physical movement promotes better circulation and increased blood flow which aids hair growth.

health&beauty Here are some things you can eat for healthier hair: Swimmin’ Salmon Salmon provides us with Omega-3 fats that help our scalps contain enough moisture to provide us with lustrous hair. A three-ounce serving of salmon also gives us one-third of our daily protein requirement. Not a fish lover? Take one tablespoon daily of ground flaxseed. Eat Your Vegetables The darker and leafier the better to get Vitamins A and C that help our hair follicles produce sebum, a natural substance that keeps our scalp and hair from drying out. Also, iron has been shown to help hair grow so gravitate toward veggies with high iron content including spinach, broccoli, kale and chard. LEAN BEANS
GET NUTS Nuts contain elements that are good for your hair as well as your scalp. Almonds, cashews and pecans contain biotin that has been associated with aiding hair growth. Nuts also pack a healthy protein punch to help keep our locks luscious. DIET NATURALLY While watching your weight, be sure to eat as many calories from natural foods as possible to assure that you are taking in enough nutrients for healthy hair – and a healthy body. Avoid heavily processed or fast foods as they provide little nutritional support. SPARKLING NATURALLY OK, so it’s not a food but our attitude has a tremendous affect on our bodies, including our hair. Manage your mind by counterbalancing stressful times with a walk in a park, meditation, and quality time with family and friends. Have a few moments of time to yourself? Treat yourself to a scalp massage. You’ll awaken your hair follicles and relax your mind.

CRAZY, STUPID LOVE
12A
Director: Glenn Ficarra, John Requa Starring: Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess, Romola Garai, Patricia Clarkson Comedy dating mishaps with Steve Carell as an uncool guy flung back into the singles game. Fed up with her marriage and kids, Emily Weaver (Julianne Moore) has a fling with work colleague David Lindhagen (Kevin Bacon) and demands a divorce from hubby Cal (Steve Carell). For forty-something Cal, who thought he had the perfect life, this proves devastating. Unexpectedly single for the first time in decades, our dorky hero doesn’t stand a chance in today’s ultracompetitive love market. Until, that is, super-player Jacob Palmer (Ryan Gosling) takes pity on the poor schlub and gives him some serious mentoring. Before long, Cal’s got a cool haircut, a sharp suit and a new line in patter. From the directors of ‘I Love you Phillip Morris’, this laughout-loud comedy sees Steve Carell back in winning ‘40 Year Old Virgin’ territory. The dream supporting cast includes Marisa Tomei and rising star Emma Stone.
TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY
15
Director: Tomas Alfredson Starring: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Mark Strong, Tom Hardy, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Kathy Burke Gary Oldman and Colin Firth star in a classy adaptation of John le Carre’s classic Cold War spy novel. It’s the 1970s, and mild-mannered former MI6 agent George Smiley (Gary Oldman) is struggling with forced semi-retirement when he’s suddenly recalled. It seems certain that there’s a double-agent working for the Soviets right at the top of the ‘Circus’ - MI6’s HQ in London’s Cambridge Circus. Smiley’s task is to find out which of his trusted former colleagues has been betraying Britain at the highest level for so many years. He soon identifies four suspects, but a tangled web of friendships and rivalries muddies the waters. Acclaimed Swedish director Tomas Alfredson (‘Let the Right One In’) helms this new adaptation of John le Carre’s magnificently plotted, twisting, turning espionage thriller. Its cast is practically an A-Z of great British acting talent, including Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds and Oscarwinner Colin Firth.

I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT
Director: Douglas McGrath Starring: Sarah Jessica Parker, Greg Kinnear, Pierce Brosnan, Olivia Munn, Christina Hendric Sarah Jessica Parker stars in a sparkling comedy about a mum juggling marriage, children and a highpowered job. “I don’t know how she does it!” That’s what everyone says about Kate Reddy (Sarah Jessica Parker). Trouble is, nor does she. Hubby Richard (Greg Kinnear) is a recently ‘downsized’ architect, leaving Kate the family’s main breadwinner while raising the couple’s two children. At the Boston financial management firm where she holds down a high-powered job, her ultracapable, child-phobic junior assistant Momo (Olivia Munn) views her as a role model to avoid. Acerbic best friend Allison (Christina Hendricks), however, performs a similar juggling act with ease. Then Kate lands a major account that entails working with seductive new business associate Jack Abelhammer (Pierce Brosnan)... Adapted by Aline Brosh McKenna (‘The Devil Wears Prada’) from the bestseller by top British columnist Allison Pearson, Douglas McGrath’s film finds comedy gold in the stresses of modern life.

What happens at times of illness and family emergencies? And what do you do when you can’t fulfill even the basic expectations of your work programme without someone else to step in, or some kind of fall back plan? This is not such a problem for those who are in partnerships or employ an assistant, but what about when you are alone and everything is dependent on you getting the work done and getting out there. Unforeseen problems will inevitably arise and if you’re not prepared these problems can be compounded by the stress of worry over how to keep everything running smoothly. Added to that is the anxiety of knowing that your losing ground on the daily tasks can create an even bigger to-do list and build into a vicious cycle of worry and stress; let alone possible loss of income. An essential part of good marketing practice, especially in today’s marketplace of vast choice, is to stay visible. Dropping off the radar for even a short period of time can lead to a substantial loss of credibility or even sales. It is important to stay everpresent in your markets scope of awareness. When people are ready to buy they will buy from whoever is foremost in their mind, so long as that person can fullfil their basic requirements. This problem will occur if you are taken ill and unable to keep up with work commitments, this will send out a message of unreliability which naturally is the total opposite of how you want to be seen in your business. So at what stage do you plan for these kinds of possibilities? And what kinds of systems can you put in place for the occasions when you need them?

This is where having a V.A. (Virtual Assistant) can help. Asking good friends and family to step into the breach is wonderful if you can do that, but you may find you’re too dependent on their good will and their coincidentally good timing. You may want to consider setting up and establishing a relationship with a V.A. so that they know your business and your style. If your work involves more face-to-face time or hands on participation you may like to consider developing a partnership with somebody in a similar field, where you agree in advance to step in for each other. Many people are reluctant to set up a partnership like this for fear of customers being “stolen” from them. It is a possibility, but by establishing a good relationship and developing mutual trust, this in fact is more likely to enhance your standing with your clients as proof of your not letting them down. What considerations are you giving?

Have a nice Trip?
family&home
by Gemma Walters
One of my very bestest skills (if you can call it a skill) is falling over.
M
y preferred falling over incidents (and most talked about) are, in order of preference:
rbeque, my friends summer ba That time I fell over at grass and I was my heel got stuck in the mud all over my chin. DOWN, face first, with And that time I fell out of my car, aga in head first, and again after getting my heel stuc k, this time in the hem of my trousers . That time I fell over in the pub (which time I hear you ask? there have been a few), well that time when I landed in a kneeling positio n at the bar after getting my heel stuck in the doorway, it’s one way of getting served soonest.
Can you see the pattern forming? they all involve ‘heels’. Well, as an expert on the topic, here are some top tips for falling over in a dignified manner: Always try to break your fall. Head first falling hurts bad. And you wind up with mud on your face, which makes your already embarrassed state rather much worse. Feel free to let out a little girly squeal (unless you’re a guy), it makes people feel sorry for you, like they would do a small child and they are less inclined to laugh. Please make sure you are wearing good knickers. It’s bad enough to fall over, but if you give everyone a glimpse of your ‘I need to do some washing knickers’ - the humiliation will last a LOT longer, I promise. If you are of the falling over variety, try to make sure you are with someone at all times. Falling over on your own is possibly the worst type of fall. With no one to laugh it over with you really do just look like a wally, or a drunk – or a drunk wally.

themhd
Always inspect your heels for ‘pretend’ defects after a fall, if in doubt, blame the shoes but make sure everyone notices you ‘blaming the shoes’. Never admit to being hurt. Once the commotion has died down, feel free to walk round a corner and scweam and scweam and scweam, but not while people are still watching. Allow people to help you up - even if they are sniggering. If they are not sniggering, be warned, they will snigger when they tell all their friends on facebook what they just saw. And lastly, whilst difficult, if you happen to be walking along with your beautiful friend (live above), try to compose your facial expression when falling, if you are captured on camera falling, a smile is much more flattering. Like with most things, falling over with dignity is an art form, it takes some practice. I practice a lot and I’m still not there, so don’t worry if it takes you some time to perfect. What’s been your best (or worst, depends on how you look at it) falling over experience? Tell me about it, so I don’t feel like the only master faller!

Community Police
Newsletter Firstly, we hope you all had a lovely summer, now we are entering the autumnal season. May we take this opportunity to let you know that we are holding another Bike Marking Event on Saturday 29th October 2011 at Moreton Hall Community Centre from 11.00 am – 2.00 pm, due to the success of our last event where 38 bikes were marked. Please come along and see us, this is your opportunity to have your property marked with a UV Pen, free of charge. Every year we have many bikes that have been separated from their owners, by having yours marked it makes it possible for us to return them back to you, if it was ever lost or stolen. Over the summer Moreton Hall, compared to last year, has seen a dramatic decrease in Anti-Social behaviour, which is very positive. We have though, had a few complaints from residents about noise from children playing in areas adjacent to properties, which are not always designated play areas. We ask that consideration is given to keeping noise to a minimum, not causing annoyance or disturbance to local residents but still enabling children to enjoy themselves, whilst in a safe environment close to their homes. In the run-up to Halloween, Police are issuing their annual request for residents of all ages to make the 2011 Halloween weekend a safe and enjoyable one. Advice to remember when out and about includes: • Stay in well-lit areas and consider carrying a torch • Do not frighten elderly people or younger children • Do not enter a house unless you know the person. Young children should always be with an adult. • Older children should ensure they are with friends
• If a sign says “no trick or treat”, respect that person’s wishes and move on • Be visible, it will be dark and it is important that passing traffic can see you • If you have a mobile phone make sure you look after it, so that parents/guardian can keep in touch at all times • Tell your parents or guardian where you are going and what time you will be back. If you are given money, keep it hidden away in a wallet or clothing. THE NEXT PRIORITY MEETING FOR THE PUBLIC The next priority meeting that you, the public can address your concerns and issues to the Police, St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Havebury Housing and other partnerships will be on: Wednesday 7th December 2011, the venue of the meeting is The Apex, Charter Square, Bury St Edmunds, IP33 3FD. The meeting will begin at 19:00 hours and finish approximately 21:00 hrs. This is your opportunity to come along and find out about what is happening in your local area, raise any concerns or issues you may have or just simply to meet your local officers. We look forward to seeing you all.

Absolutely Brilliant Childcare Moreton Hall Childminding Group
IF YOU NEED CHILDCARE – WE CAN HELP All our childminders are registered, inspected and insured
Some of the benefits of using a childminder are: l Flexibility, emergency cover, drop-off & collection at local schools and one-to-one care l Children can take part in, and feel part of, the local community l Brothers and sisters can be cared for together, providing peace of mind for the whole family
We currently have vacancies
TELEPHONE: Angela Warriner on 01284 765238 EMAIL: absolutelybrilliantchildcare@hotmail.co.uk Absolutely Brilliant Childcare
Safeguarding Children and Food Hygiene (requirement of Suffolk County Council). As a commitment to our customers we are involved in on-going training in order to develop our skills and keep up to date with childcare practices; most notably the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Each childminder runs his or her individual business, but being part of a group allows us to deal with enquiries centrally. We have a Vacancy Coordinator who knows each Minder personally and is up to date on which Minder has vacancies at any given time. We are a close-knit group and provide support and back-up to each other, as required. We often socialise the children as a group, attending local playgroups each week, and organise group visits to the Zoo, Farms, Fire Station and Police Station. We hold a yearly sports day and Toddler walk. And, every Christmas we hold a Christmas Party for all our under 5s and much more!
We realise that choosing someone to look after your child when you return to work or training is one of the most important decisions you can make. One of the advantages of using an ABC childminder is that your baby or child will be one of a small group, and we can therefore offer plenty of individual attention.
is a childminding group based on the Moreton Hall Estate. The group was established in 1997 and currently has 18 members. We are all fully insured and inspected and governed by OFSTED.
In order to function as a childminder we are required to have up-todate qualifications in First Aid,
We have mixed-age groups, which closely mirrors family life and may help your child learn to feel comfortable around older and younger children. It also makes it easier to care for all the children in a family, from babies to school age
children. Many of our parents like this family-friendly interaction, and often what starts out as a childminding arrangement becomes a strong friendship that lasts for years. Taking your child to an ABC childminder can be the next best thing to your own home. Finally, all ABC childminders are parents themselves and we believe that this makes a difference in our approach to caring for children. Please note that using a registered childminder means that you may be able to get help with your childcare costs through the childcare element of the Working Tax Credit (WTC). Childcare vouchers are also accepted as payment by the majority of childminders. If you would like to know more about how a childminder works, why not take the opportunity to spend time with an ABC childminder. This can be organised via our Vacancy Co-ordinator.

The colour of blue tits What colour are blue tits? This might seem a silly question; blue tits are one of the commonest birds on Moreton Hall and most of us are familiar with their blue head, white face with a black stripe, and yellow chest. When they come to our bird feeders, hunt for caterpillars on our bushes, or perch on tree branches, they are pretty unmistakable.
brightness of the blue also helps with choosing a mate, and pairs of blue tits tend to have similarly bright blue heads. Choosing a mate who’s fairly like you means a likely good mate.
Within that choice of partners is a second colour choice, and that’s the yellow chest. It’s something we can identify, too. The yellow pigment in the chest feathers comes from the caterpillars it eats. When a blue Blue tits all look the same to tit’s feathers are growing, the us, but they see each other in a more caterpillars it eats the more different light – literally. Blue yellow pigment it gets and so its tits, like many other birds, can chest gets yellower. So a blue tit see ultraviolet light invisible with an intensely yellow chest to us. Their blue heads look is advertising its past history of much brighter in ultraviolet being a great caterpillar hunter, than in the wavelengths o flight and so will be able to feed a that we can see. Knowing large brood of chicks. These who’s in your territory is birds will be the most soughtimportant, and intruders can after birds in the courtship be seen a long way off. The process.

ctober is a month that I’ve been looking forward to for sometime. Clearly the prospect of England securing their place at Euro2012 is the priority, but there is something else occurring that is nearly as exciting.
careful planning and even more hard negotiating, but eventually it was agreed. My wife and I are to share the childcare and paid work. This all starts in earnest in October, as my wife returns to work and our daughter celebrates her 1st birthday (I’m not entirely sure where 12 months has gone?).
It all started in the New Year when the reality of having 2 pre-school aged children and 2 working parents hit home. Apparently we’re not allowed to leave them home alone with a tin of baked beans and the TV remote whilst we go to work? Personally, I think it would toughen them up a bit, help them learn to use their initiative, but I’m told a 1 year old may struggle to operate the freeview box.
Naturally I’m looking forward to it. I mean, with only 3 days a week in the office, who wouldn’t be!? There’s a catch though. Actually there are a few catches. Firstly I wont actually get paid for looking after my children. I had considered invoicing my wife for this service, but then thought better of it. In addition, what my (childless) friends might refer to as holiday or freetime, when I’m not at work, will undoubtedly be infinitely more tiring and challenging than actually going to work.
So, the grand plan was concocted. It took a lot of

Memories of looking after my son when he was a year old are still surprisingly vivid. Regardless of the fact I was often spotted doing exactly this, it’s no ‘walk in the park’. Now I’m just trying to imagine that – times two!? Thankfully, now he’s at Nursery, the eldest wont be my problem for 3 hrs of the day. The next year will, without doubt, be demanding, exhausting and at times, terrifying. But, (…and feel free to quote me on this if you spot me at my wits end with 2 screaming kids on a wet Monday afternoon in town) I’m sure the rewards will make it well worthwhile. However, it’s already obvious to me that I will be strangely relieved when I turn up at work for my 3 days a week in the office!

MOUNT FARM SURGERY We have a very good surgery, with dedicated doctors nurses and administration staff, which covers our estate and beyond. Time is very important and so is keeping your appointments. Last month over 104 appointments were not kept, this is a shameful waste of doctors time especially as those appointments could have gone to other people who badly needed them. 104 appointments let us say at ten minutes each that’s 17.33 hours wasted. So if you make an appointment and then are not able to attend please let them know and they can fit someone else in.

SKATEBOARDING Many of our youngsters have asked us on club night if there is a possibility of them having a skateboarding park on Moreton Hall, well myself and others spoke to officers at the Borough and the following is a direct quote from Mr Howard Cook who is project manager for the football and other projects on Moreton Hall including our own Youth Club.
know” After talking to Howard he felt the most likely area for this would be where there is already a bit of a BMX site just off the A14.
“Councillors have asked Borough Council Staff to investigate the possibility of getting funding for some kind of Skateboarding facility at Moreton Hall, as an addition to the existing facilities for young people. If you have any views on this idea please let me or any ward members
I must point out that this is just at the discussion stage and NOT guaranteed but fingers crossed. Please remember we are at a very early stage and money will be a big consideration, we will not get another skate park like the picture shown.
PARKING
YOUTH CLUB The first night back went very well, lots of very excited youngsters, our team had a chat with some of the older ones and they decided that we should open another night for 14 years and upwards. So if any of you 14 year olds want to get in touch and we can meet and come to some arrangement and get your night going. While talking about older kids, what would be the feeling about having a monthly Disco?, depending on the demand and the cost we shall see what can be done, again feedback would help.

Next to dog fouling, parking is the issue that I get most emails about. Parking on pavements, which makes mothers have to walk on the road, but most frustrating is people parking on the double yellow lines on Lawson Place. This is made worse by the fact that it is also a cycle path. The following is part of an email I have had from a very concerned gent. “This morning was absolute chaos, there were three cars parked on double yellow lines with cars trying to overtake and cars leaving Tesco car park, it was just as well no one was trying to use the cycle path as this really is an accident waiting to happen, maybe when an accident does happen then something will be done.” I think that says it all, no matter how often it’s mentioned people still take no notice.

Friendship We all live very hectic and busy lives, and we are worried about the economic downturn and the possible collapse the banks. Everybody is feeling very stressed and worried at this time. This worry is expressed in short tempers, gloom and a sense of low well-being. One of the best antidotes to this is friendship. Friendships, often go by the board in times of difficulty and the rat-race in which we now live. We have to do so much work, we have to do so much with our families, we have to do so much with other people, that often those deep friendships which we have had maybe since childhood, are put to one side.
think “when was the last time I saw my best friend?” Or, “when was the last time I saw a friend who has had a really big impact on my life, or has helped me through dark times in the past?” This is really the time to pick up the phone, make contact, and get to see them. Often when we meet up with them, catch up with their news, and they listen to ours, our whole perspective on our lives and theirs changes completely. Apart from the fact that it is often fun to do, it also brings new life, new hope, and new vigour to your situation. The fact that there is somebody who is outside your immediate circle but is nonetheless committed to you through friendship, can make a huge difference to our sense of well-being and our desire to get on with life. The Bible is full of close friendships, often between men and also between women. It was these friendships that kept God’s people safe and sane in difficult times, and survived the toughest of challenges. Therefore, I say to you all whatever else you do, do not neglect your friendships now.
only make new and exciting friendships, but also where we can develop our friendship with God. Most people think of spirituality and religion as something you do behalf of yourself, or a set of principles and rules. The reality is quite different. True spirituality and Christianity in particular, is a friendship; a friendship between God and us. Of course, God is our heavenly Father and Jesus Christ is our saviour, but at the centre of it is a deep love which we could best describe as friendship. There is somebody who is committed to us for all the right reasons and never expects very much from us in return other than our friendship and our desire to please them as much as they want to please and help us. Why don’t you renew your friendships with your earthly friends and seek a more powerful and long lasting one with your heavenly friend who we know as Jesus Christ? With every good wish, Yours sincerely, Revd. Canon Jonathan Ford.

that our Seedlings group, which meets on Mondays, is now full. Free Holy Communion The size of the hall means that when we reach certain levels of Reflective Worship child and parent attendance it is no longer safe for health and Baptism Sunday safety reasons to take more. We are considering how best to Healing Communion deal with this, but for the time being we can only take those who are already on our books. Please watch out on our website for further information about what is going on.

Our October Services
D.I.G. We were very pleased to see that so many children enjoyed our Holiday Club and are now attending our new Sunday School called D.I.G. (Delight In God). Please make sure that your children can have a great deal of fun on Sunday mornings at D.I.G. starting at 10.30 a.m. this Sunday. Hopefully, lots of young people can come along and find out some exciting things as they did at our Holiday Club.
Worship Together Services 10:30 Sunday Please note that in the next few months we will be having some exciting Sunday Services. On 6th November we will be having a Shoebox Sunday in which we gather and fill shoeboxes to be sent to eastern European countries so the young people there can have a good Christmas.
Why not get a shoebox and be involved? An advance notice, on 4th December we will have our Christingle Service when all proceeds will go to the Children’s Society. There will also be a Christmas card and Christmas cake stall run by our youth work to raise money for the Children’s Society.

Discover opportunities based on the individuals you mingle with this month. You might be overly emotional when dealing with your partner. You may be emotional if you allow your lover to take advantage of your good nature. Watch for empty promises that may give you false hope.
A change of attitude has probably disrupted your home environment. Your mind will be wandering to exotic destinations. The only thing you’ll accomplish is a bad reputation. Partnerships could be tense. Don’t push your luck.
Lucky day: Wednesday.
You can gain approval, get kudos, and ask for help if you put a little heart into your speech or request. Your mate may not have been honest with you. Your diplomatic approach and rather outgoing nature will enhance your reputation and bring you the support you need. You may find out that someone has not been completely honest with you.
Cancer (June 22-July 22)
Leo (July 23-Aug 22)
Virgo (Aug. 23 -Sept. 23)
Minor accidents could cause trauma and major setbacks. If you put your energy into physical outlets you will avoid confrontations. Don’t lend to people who have given you negative vibes. You will meet potential new mates through business.
You need time to put your house in order and sort out what you are going to do about your personal direction. You’ll look guilty if you don’t lay your cards on the table. Real estate investments will be extremely profitable in the long run. Financial gains can be made through wise investments.
Try not to let your emotions interfere with the completion of your work. Your interests could lead you down avenues you never realized existed. Don’t be too eager to start any debates. It might be time to pick up the slack and do your share.

This day was meant for love. Make creative changes to your residence. You can make alterations to your appearance that everyone will admire. Emotionally you won’t see things accurately. If you haven’t planned a vacation, then at least try to get away for the weekend.
Only bite off what you can chew. You could be emotional if you didn’t take care of problems with loved ones. Listen to the problems of others and offer suggestions where possible. Your partner will blow situations out of proportion.
