CHAD COLEMAN, photo I may be a “grown-up” – but every December, like a child, I am still filled with wonder because of the season. Those wily sugar plums that dance in one’s head never got the memo when I turned 18, but I like it that way. Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, or simply appreciate nature turning from fall to winter, there’s something magical that happens at this time. Life slows down and gets a little quieter. The frost ices the trees and transforms our normally green Pacific Northwest into a land of white and silver, dotted with snowflakes and, hopefully, not too many car collisions. December brings ballet and theater performances that remind us not to be Bah-Humbugs, and outdoor displays of twinkling lights and marching toy soldiers that make us grateful to live in the city with the “beautiful view.” We bundle up our families for outings with singing and hot chocolate. The adults are content; the kids are off-thecharts happy. This is because the holidays are magical no matter your age or background. I wish I could speak without being cliché, but I guess my true feelings sound like a Hallmark card. I love the holidays, too, because they belong to all of us. Look at Irving Berlin – a Jewish composer who would go on to write one of the most popular holiday songs, “White Christmas” recorded by Bing Crosby and others. It didn’t matter that Berlin’s first language was Yiddish, or that his ancestors lit the menora instead of singing hymns of Three Wise Men. Today, Berlin’s song is a beloved piece in our holiday song books, along with other traditional and religious Christmas songs. In my opinion, that’s the way it should be. Let’s keep that spirt of openness and love as we celebrate together this December.

The temperature’s dropping, the sun’s going down earlier and the Christmas lights are peaking out. You know what that means, hot drinks season has come. Whether you’re huddling around a fire, or trying to just get through your office Christmas party, a good hot drink cures all. Here are a few of our faves, including recipes.
Hot Apple Pie
Apple cider in and of itself is iconic of the holidays. Add booze and even more sweet taste, and you’ve got a picture of perfection. To make this drink, boil a gallon of apple cider, and add cloves and an orange cut into quarters. Add 2 oz. of Tuaca, a brandy-based Italian liqueur. Fill the rest of your cup with the hot cider and toss in a Cinnamon stick or two. Top with whipped cream and dust with ground cinnamon.
Butter Baby
Who doesn’t love getting cozy by the fire and warming up with a nice hot chocolate? Now you can add a little pop to this classic drink. Drop an ounce of butterscotch schnapps into a coffee mug, and fill it with hot chocolate, homemade preferred. Next just top it off with some whip cream and sprinkle a few chocolate flakes on top.
Hot buttered rum
Southern Egg Nog
This family classic varies not only from region to region, but from house to house. Heat milk in a saucepan over boiling water, but do not boil. Beat three eggs and one cup sugar well. Pour hot milk slowly over the egg mixture (will curdle if mixed too fast). Put back in saucepan and cook over hot water for a few minutes. Sprinkle in a teaspoon of vanilla and quarter teaspoons of cinnamon and nutmeg then beat occasionally while cooling. Drop in a shot or two of rum, brandy or bourbon as the mixture cools.
Hot buttered rum
This favorite is a challenging yet rewarding adventure. Bring two cups of water, half a stick of butter, a quarter-cup of brown sugar, a teaspoon of cinnamon, half a teaspoon of nutmeg, cloves, and salt to a boil in a 1 1/2- to 2-quart saucepan over moderately high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, whisking occasionally, 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in rum.

Bake up some new ‘favorites’ for the coming holiday season BY CELESTE GRACEY Admit it, the only time of year most people bake is during the holiday season. It’s usually an old-family-favorite recipe that no one else seems to make just right. A few years ago, I dug out my mom’s Russian Tea Cake recipe and proudly brought the holiday cookies to a party. When I arrived, there was such a calamity of different family recipes, I hardly had room between the candy cane brownies and hand-twisted cookies to set down my plate. It made me wonder, if every family in my circle of friends had wildly different holiday treats, how different must other countries be? So I studied popular recipes from around the world and picked a few favorites to share. Try mixing your recipes up a bit this season, or perhaps just make a couple more. After all, my mom isn’t Russian, but somewhere along the line her experiment became my tradition.

Portugal and Brazil Named for a famous 1940’s Brigadier General named Eduardo Gomes, who loved chocolate, these are a South American-type truffle that are popular at most celebrations. Like many Brazilian desserts, this one uses sweetened condensed milk, giving the center a soft carmelly inside. While they’re traditionally rolled in chocolate sprinkles, try substituting for coconut or something festive.
Ingredients
1 14-ounce can of sweetened condensed milk 4 Tbsp cocoa powder 1/4 tsp salt 3 Tbsp butter
BRIGADEIROS are a popular Brazillian truffle. 1 tsp vanilla Chocolate sprinkles Little paper or tin liners for serving
Preparation
Heat the sweetened condensed milk in a heavy pan over medium-low heat. Stir constantly for 10-15 minutes, keeping the mixture barely at a boil, so it doesn’t burn. When the mixture becomes thick and begins to pull away from the pan, pull it off the heat and stir in the butter and vanilla. Slide the mixture into a bowl, but don’t leave the residue on the bottom of the pan. Chill for about 20-30 minutes. Then with buttered hands, roll 1-inch balls in your palm, and then roll them into the chocolate sprinkles, covering the gooey chocolate completely. Place them in the liners, and store them in a refrigerator until serving.
Linzer Schnitten These beautiful German tortes are cut into cookie bars, making a perfect celebration food to share. Red jam looks like stained glass windows beneath lattice work and the fruit balances with spicy dough. Making them is similar to rolling out pie crust. It may be more work than a drop cookie, but they’re sure to impress guests. [more YUM on page 9]

Ingredients
3/4 cup butter 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 eggs 3 1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 2 teaspoons cinnamon 1 teaspoon powdered cloves 1 t finely grated rind and juice of 1 lemon 1/4 teaspoon salt A jar of your favorite jam For the glaze 1 egg 3/4 cup sugar Make sure the butter is soft, but not melted. Cream together the butter and sugar in a mixer, then add the eggs. In a separate bowl sift together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, cloves and salt. Then add the dry ingredients to the wet and incorporate barely. Making sure only to use the yellow part of the rind, add it and the lemon and mix until it’s all incorporated.
Preparation
Pull the dough from the mixer and knead it into a ball. Cover it with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour.
Heat the oven to 375 degrees. On a lightly-floured board, split the dough in half. Roll one half into a ball, and working slowly with a rolling pin, roll the dough out evenly until it’s about 1/2 inch thick. Try to form a square by cutting off the round edges and reincorporating the dough. Spread the jam thickly across the top of the dough. Roll out the second ball, making it longer. Bake on a cookie sheet for 15-20 minutes, or until lightly brown on top. Beat together the egg and sugar, and quickly drizzle the mixture on top while the baked dough is still hot.

Man beneath the lip gloss What Teatro ZinZanni’s drag queen is really like BY GABRIELLE NOMURA | COURTESY PHOTOS
When I arrive early for an interview with performer Kevin Kent – he’s not there yet; apparently, he had “some beauty thing,” possibly an eyebrow wax or facial. Kent is renowned at Teatro ZinZanni for his memorable drag queen act, combining on-the-spot humor and unforgettable audience participation that involves flirting with male members of the audience. While wearing a dress. Kent is just one standout in the ZinZanni show – a spectacular display of acrobatics, cabaret, comedy, dance and music over a gourmet, five-course menu designed by chef Tom Douglas. If that sounds like a lot of fabulousness crammed into one evening, you’d be right. The experience has an over-the-top factor of Cirque du Soliel, Zagat-worthy entrees and unique performers, such as 80-year-old Liliane Montevecchi, former prima ballerina and star of, “Bonsoir Liliane!” currently playing at the ZinZanni, or people such as Kent, who’s been gaining fans since 1998. As I wait for Kent to arrive in ZinZanni’s Seattle Center offices, I wonder if he’ll have a diva attitude to match the sassy persona I’ve seen him bring to the stage. In framed photos that line the office walls, Kent poses like an amazon pinup girl with kissy lips; in another, he’s pictured in his signature Queen of Hearts getup – the ultimate centerpiece for a gay pride parade. Aside from the thick eyeliner and luscious lips he applies himself, the transformation to drag queen is completed by the way he carries himself, like he’s a pompous, British monarch. He forces his voice into a high, almost prissy register, ending many of his sentences with the spirited phrase, “Very good,” as he instructs audience members to show off their seduction skills.
The act
Much of Kent’s act stays the same each night. But there’s about 30 percent that changes each show as he rolls with the punches; or more accurately, with the ridiculous situations, comments or reactions he gets from the audience members – whether it’s someone being shy, or someone really getting into the act by giving Kent a coquettish wink. “Big, muscly straight guys” who come with a wife or girlfriend are fair game for being plucked from the audience. People who look miserable, or who are dateless, Kent doesn’t mess with. He also doesn’t tend to pick on women, as he says it can create an unnecessary tension, and, of course, he tries to avoid picking gay men. “Because then it’s just a gay man putting a dress on a gay man,” Kent would later tell me during our interview. He literally transfers part of his costume, a ball gown, to an audience member and gussies him up with rouge in “Bonsoire Liliane!” – he loves role reversal, gender dynamics and of course, dress-up. Getting to interact with the audience, both during his act, and when he gets to walk around and mingle throughout the show, is what Kent loves about performing with ZinZanni. Once, Kent was schmoozing with a table that included a married couple and their two adult daughters. During the conversation, the mother started joking around with the drag queen, as she laughingly commiserated with Kent on the burden of having to wear a padded bra. When Kent looked over at the daughters, they were crying. As it turns out, that was the first time their mom had been able to openly acknowledge that she was a survivor of breast cancer – and with humor, no less. It’s only one ZinZanni story Kent will never forget.

The real Kent
When he shows up for the interview, it pulls me back to reality – this isn’t what I thought the queen would look like underneath the “falsies.” We sit in the vintage circus tent, the chairs upturned over the tabletops. This place where magic happens at night looks so different in broad, unromantic daylight. But, it’s in this light that I can finally see the person beneath the drag makeup. He’s soft-spoken (in front of me, at least), with piercing blue eyes, cropped whitish hair and almost iridescent skin, scrubbed clean from the last show. I can only see a glimmer of the drag queen in this serious man, and I don’t dare ask him about his beauty appointment. Still, he’s polite; nothing like the wild and unruly queen. When you see things more clearly, you often learn that your original perceptions were off-base. I would sooner have thought that Kent was an aspiring Broadway performer from New York City than an architecture major from New Mexico. He didn’t make the switch from designing buildings into improvisational acting, and then later, drag, until he’d had his first taste of college. New Mexico, believe-it-or-not, is where Kent returns when he isn’t with Teatro ZinZanni. His off-season gig? Cattle rancher. Driving a pickup truck, relying on solar energy, and even hunting from time-totime, the seemingly-glamorous performer lives off-the-grid in stark contrast to his other life. “It’s definitely a different speed; a different setting,” Kent says. “Life slows down.” I can’t believe I ever thought he’d be a diva. You can’t judge a book by its cover – or a man, by his eyeliner.

Dressing for holiday parties can be overwhelming, but here are some pieces that will ensure you stand out from the crowd. Sequins, sparkle, glitter Any of the above is fabulous and beyond festive, but you want to make sure not to go overboard or else you will look like a disco ball. Go with one key piece that will help you to shine, and focus around that. A black sequin skirt is perfect because the dark color helps dress it down and look more neutral. You could also have glitter nail polish to add some glam if you aren’t feeling as bold in your wardrobe choices. The perfect red lip I recently got into lipstick about a year ago (I was always a lip-gloss girl — very subtle color, but nothing too drastic.) I never realized how much lipstick can change your entire look, and help give you a boost of confidence. The perfect red lip will fit your skin tone, so make sure to shop around to see which one looks best on you. One of the best lipsticks I have ever found is the Revlon ColorBurst Lip Butter collection. The name makes them sound more like a chap stick, but they are the perfect hybrid between a lipstick, lip balm, and a lip-gloss. They are moisturizing, pigmented and glossy — three products in one. The best part? They usually run about $7.50 at your local drugstore. A killer shoe My perfect outfit is skinny jeans, a cute top and an outrageous shoe. Most of the time my shoes steal the show, and I love it that way. A shoe can make or break the outfit, so if you are feeling most comfortable in the basics, kick it up a notch with your shoes. Whether they are animal print, spiky, or a bright color, your shoes will be sure to get noticed, and you will be the talk of the party. A clutch always works Clutches are best for holiday parties because you don’t have to worry about lugging around a huge tote on your shoulder all night. All you need are the basics (credit card, keys, phone, etc.) and a clutch is perfect for that. Plus, it looks elegant. To make your clutch the center of your outfit, choose one that’s small, yet efficient. This animal print one from House of Harlow 1960 is excellent, because even though animal print is a neutral, it still stands out and is a great conversation starter. Make a statement with jewelry A fabulous jewelry piece will always get women talking. Whether you prefer a huge cocktail ring (my piece of choice), a gorgeous necklace or some blinged out earrings, jewelry is like adding frosting on cake— always necessary. I hope these tips will help you look and feel your most beautiful during the holiday season, and remember—fashion is FUN! Play around with it, and don’t take yourself too seriously! Hanging out at Pike Place Market, shopping at Bellevue Square and eating at Wibbley’s Gourmet hamburgers – these are first on Megan Hilty’s to-do list whenever the Broadway star returns to her hometown. “I loved growing up in Bellevue and I love even more that I get to come home there,” says Hilty, 30, who always sang and got her first taste for theater as a participant in Bellevue Youth Theatre programs. There, she got to do everything from learn choreography to help build sets. “It gave me a purpose,” Hilty says. “It made me think, ‘I really want to do this.” Surprisingly, Hilty never got parts at local venues such as Village Theatre, or Sammamish High School, where she attended for part of her secondary schooling. She was never the right age or quite what they were looking for. Little did anyone know she would become a Broadway performer. Hilty got her big break in 2006, replacing a role made famous by Kristin Chenoweth – Glinda the Good Witch, in the musical “Wicked.” In 2008, she would play another role pioneered by another famous blonde bombshell – Dolly Parton. The role was Doralee Rhodes in “9 to 5” the musical. It was a daunting task – having to step into characters already established by these beloved women, Hilty says. “I had to say, ‘I’m not Kristin Chenoweth. I can’t make A, B and C funny, but maybe I can make D, E and F funny. You have to step away from what others have done before and say, ‘I’m good enough to make this mine.’” Since making her mark in the musical theater world, Hilty has been working on NBC’s new show about Broadway, “Smash,” which will premier this February, plus she’s also got an animated movie slated for 2012, “Dorothy of Oz” and a budding voice-over career with Nickelodeon and Disney. Still though – there’s work to be done, opportunities to consider and a career to plan. “I think if I ever get too comfortable and say, ‘I’ve arrived,’ I won’t be doing my job,’” she says.

Keep it on the D.L. Talking with funny man and best friend of the late Bernie Mac BY GABRIELLE NOMURA D.L. Hughley grew up in South Central Los Angeles, the son of an airline maintenance worker and a homemaker. He was a member of the Bloods gang after getting kicked out of high school. However, he turned his life around after a cousin was shot. He quit the gang and got a job as a telemarketer for the Los Angeles Times, where he moved into management and met his wife-to-be. She was the one who convinced him to try his humor on stage. After years of club dates, he was selected by BET as the first host of “Comic View” and subsequently got additional recognition with two adult-oriented HBO specials. You know him from his work in radio, TV shows such as “Scrubs,” and his friendship with fellow “The Original Kings of Comedy” film star, Bernie Mac.
scene: Describe your standup in one word? DL: Funny.
scene: How is your sitcom comedy different from your
standup? DL: Sitcom comedy is more collaborative: more people more egos. It’s more dependent on other people. Standup is a singular, lone-wolf kind of thing.
scene: Out of all the things you’ve done in TV, film and
radio, what’s one of the favorite projects you’ve ever worked on? DL: I think the thing I enjoyed the most was “Kings of Comedy.” I was young. Nobody had ever done a film like that before and it was like lightning in a bottle. I didn’t know to what degree it would be successful.
scene: Your costar for that film was your best friend, the
late Bernie Mac. What do you miss most about him? DL: I think I miss him more as a man than anything else. He taught me not to be single-minded and to stand up for what you believe in.
scene: Where do you get inspiration for your material?
DL: How can you have a Penn. State sex scandal and a black guy running for president with multiple accusers of sexual harassment and not come up with material? National TV is the gift that keeps on giving.
scene: What kind of projects do you like to get involved
with? DL: Things that have a sense of immediacy, that are tied into what’s going on.
scene: What was your childhood like in L.A.?
DL: There are two kinds of people: People who really enjoy the first quarter of their life and grow up in a home where they can look fondly back at it, and there are people who are strapped by their childhood and can’t wait for it to be over. It’s miserable, scary and you figure it’s only got to get better from there. I was in that second group. I think you either have it really good early, or really good late.
scene: What were the biggest challenges you had to
overcome to become successful in the entertainment industry? DL: There are times when you have to decide what kind of man you want to be. I think it’s a lot of things. Do you want to be funny, famous, have faith – that was the most difficult part, deciding. In the end, I feel like I chose to be me and to edify my own belief system. I was never inspired or intrigued by fame. I am always happy and grateful when someone comes up and recognizes me, but I think fame can be as bad as a drug and equally intoxicating. I’ve seen crack addicts have more dignity than famous people.
scene: What advice do you have for people who may
come from circumstances similar to yours? How can you turn your life around? DL: I think just to say it was divine intervention of luck takes me being responsible out of it. Most people don’t know how to be their own hero – but that’s what you have to be. The sooner you can do that for yourself, the better. D.L. Hey Santa, think outside the toy box Hey Santa! Have you heard the news? The best gifts come from every department BUT the toy department. Here’s what they really want. Kids love a good mess. Mix up a potion kit with a personalized plastic storage drawer filled with empty travel size containers, a spray bottle for “magic mist,” a funnel, a turkey baster etc. Add cheap lotion, baking powder and rice for older kids to mix and pour outdoors. Storage drawers are fabulous for party supplies for the younger child who likes everyday celebrations and mud pie kits that include a mortar and pestle for smashing leaves, pie tins, a garden kneeling pad, shovel and a lettuce knife (a plastic chef ’s knife) that can be safely used by kids. Who doesn’t love the possibility of a fresh pad of paper? Ignore the gimmicky plastic diaries covered in licensed characters. Surprise your scribe with grown up journals by Moleskine or splurge on a leather covered blank book guaranteed to unleash your surly teen’s deepest thoughts. Every child needs their own desk stapler, tape dispenser and pencil sharpener. Last year my husband wrapped a set for everyone because he was tired of searching for his under Sweetie Boy’s bed. Outfitting a kid to share a grown up hobby like fishing, photography or geology can be a lasting investment. And since they’re likely to move out eventually (unless they are destined for billionairedom), it is never too early to start their art collection. Signed posters, framed dead bugs, art fair finds and their own art, thoughtfully framed, will look amazing in their first apartment. One of my daughter’s favorite toys was a silver tea set we kept on our coffee table. An inexpensive full size set from Grandma’s attic or the local goodwill would be an uber-thrill for a pint size Martha Stewart. This is also true of briefcases, fussy handbags and costume jewelry. Just be sure they are safe and age appropriate. While you’re recycling nostalgia, take a trip down memory lane by loading your spawn’s iPod with shows from the olden days. Sistafoo is in love with MacGyver DVDs from her clever aunt, and the boys love the vintage cartoons their dad loads onto their iPod Nanos for travel. I already have the first season of Bewitched stashed to give this year. If you still find yourself short-gifted and panicked on Christmas morning, never fear, 7/11 is near. Desperate dads and uncles can end the day “giftorious” if they present a 7/11 gift card wrapped into an empty Slurpee cup, or for instant hero status and a real blast for everyone, just show up with a few 2-liters of Coke and some tubes of Peppermint Mentos. Both are more fun than a year’s supply of batteries and more appropriate than a pack of cigs and a starter Playboy.
