2010
THE
S
eptember always reminds me of fall – a time when the leaves begin to change, the focus turns to football and back-to-school shopping is at the top of everyone’s list. Even though backpacks and binders are a thing of the past for me, there is still shopping to be done. Fall presents the perfect opportunity to update your wardrobe. For a sneak peak at fall 2010 trends, turn to this month’s cover story, The Look (pg. 10-11). You will find two pages chalked full of style ideas for dressing in your 20s, 30s, 40s and 50s. Need a reason to show off those new looks? Read all about Fashion’s Night Out, coming to Bellevue on September 10 (pg. 12). If you’re in the mood to try something new this month, catch The Bellevue Buzz (pg. 13), a look at the top five local coffee shops around town. Grab a morning jolt, catch up with friends and support your community businesses all in one quick stop. If a little home remodeling is on the agenda for fall, read up on a Redmond family who created a fresh look for their living space while staying on a budget (pg.14). The end result was a luxe look, minus the price tag. Fall is a time to renew, whether it’s a new pair of over-the-knee boots or a revitalized kitchen. Approach this month as a fresh start and take the time to fall back in love with fall.

art of baring it all The
W
hat do you get when you combine six unemployed Buffalo steelworkers with a Chippendale-worthy striptease? You get The Full Monty, an original musical production hitting the stage at Village Theatre in Issaquah on September 15. Based on the 1997 British comedy film, The Full Monty tells the tale of a group of unemployed men as they plot to find a way out of debt and back on top. The musical blends grin-and-bareit comedy with real life struggles. Theater veteran Dane Stokinger will step into the role of Jerry Lukowski, the decision maker behind the strip-tease plot. He convinces his friends to go along with the plan of baring it all with the intent of earning enough money to see his son. Stokinger’s character declares that their show will be better than the Chippendales dancers because they will leave nothing up to the imagination, raising the question of “boxers or briefs” to a whole new level. “It’s the big finale that everyone looks forward to and I promise it will deliver,” said Cynthia Savage, Costume Designer for Village Theatre. “Whether the men will be in boxers or a thong I can’t say. You will have to come and see for yourself.” The new production of The Full Monty will be brought to life at Village Theatre using an original set created by Steven Capone with the help of master carpenter André Burman and

carpenter Mark Zetterberg. The musical promises big laughs, larger than life characters and a rock-and-roll inspired ballad. “People often associate musical theater with sweeping ballads like Oklahoma, and not to discredit those productions, but there’s something very special about The Full Monty,” said Stokinger, a credible force in the Seattle theatre scene. “The score is absolutely brilliant and breaks the mold. Instead of dozens of violins, you hear guitars – it rocks.” For those who have never experienced a live theatre performance, Stokinger accredited The Full Monty as a good place to start. “Live theatre is so different from sitting in a movie theater watching a screen. With theatre, we have the opportunity to create something very spontaneous. I was at performance of Titanic once and something went wrong on stage and the ship didn’t sink. It was hilarious. The audience appreciates that because it’s raw and it’s real.”
Village Theatre is located at 303 Front Street North in Issaquah, 425.392.1942, www.villagetheatre.org.

t’s not the time to feel insecure about those unsightly spider veins that you were hoping would just go away. Did you know that spider veins can be easily treated in my office?
Special Offer!
FREE Latisse (value $120) with spider vein treatment
What are Spider Veins? Spider veins are small superficial blood vessels that appear red, purple or blue within the skin. They commonly occur in the legs, but are can also be found on the face or other places of the body. They are often genetically acquired but can also occur as a result of pregnancy, hormones and trauma. They typically cause no symptoms.
Treatments for Spider Veins If spider veins are visually annoying to you, they can be effectively treated with laser or by injections of an FDA approved solution with a tiny needle that can dissolve them away. Typically 2-3 treatments are required every 3-4 weeks. Veins will gradually get smaller and fade away with about an 80-90 percent chance for a greatly improved appearance. Come in and visit me for a consultation. I would love to help you feel more confident about showing off your legs!

Bellevue residents however, are often looking for cozier options to get coffee with friends or do some work over a cup of tea. “Bellevue residents should absolutely put their business towards locally owned shops and support their local economy,” said Nichole Lipka, the manager of the Bellevue Café Ladro. For those looking to do so, Bellevue offers a variety of local shops that sell more than just espresso.

Redesign time A Redmond family brings new life to their home, blending functionality with smart design.
A

BY LINDSAY LARIN | PHOTOS BY CHAD COLEMAN
trip to The Bellevue Home Show earlier this year changed everything for Michael and Audrey Warmington. It was there they met Craig Sawyer of Craig Sawyer Designs, Inc. All it took was a field trip to Sawyer’s split level home in Bothell and the married couple of seven years were inspired. Their goal was to update the interior space of their home, without breaking the bank. The Redmond couple first met nearly a decade ago when the two relocated to the Eastside area for work. They moved into their current Redmond home in 2003 and settled in. It wasn’t until four years ago when the Warmingtons welcomed twins, Isabella and Matthew, that they decided it was time to update the closed-off 70s style kitchen and outdated railing on the entryway stairs. “Originally we thought we would move here for a short while and then relocate somewhere else, but then the twins came along and the market took a turn and we decided to make it more our style and more livable,” Audrey explained. The remodel project focused on three major aspects of the Warmington’s interior living space. First, they wanted to replace the railing on the main stairway to make it more kid safe and to update the look. They also wanted to update the look of the fireplace and finally, the major focus of the remodel, involved a complete overhaul of the kitchen. This included knocking out an entire wall, adding new cabinets, flooring and appliances. “The kitchen was very impracticable with not enough counter space. For the larger family it just wasn’t conducive,” said Audrey. “Ascetically, the cabinets were painted a khaki color which was not very flattering and it had poor lighting. We wanted a serious update without spending a fortune.” The Warmingtons had a budget of $50,000 and a time restraint. Sawyer was happy to step up to the challenge. He began with the kitchen remodel by first locating a quality dark stained cabinet as requested by Audrey. From there, he designed the rest of the space to compliment the deep colored wood. “They wanted dark stained cabinets. This is what pointed us to IKEA for the cabinets as they had them
the nest in stock. To give the kitchen its custom look, I designed a couple of custom cabinets using various cabinet pieces available from IKEA.” Sawyer improvised. To save on cost, he replace the cabinet below the microwave with standard IKEA doors, but the cabinet itself was custom made out of other IKEA pieces. He also added a custom crown molding to the cabinet to give them a finished look. “We spoke to a lot of contractors and construction crews, but found that Craig was the right one to go with,” said Michael. “We wanted do the complete remodel on a low cost, but have it look great. We didn’t want to spend $200,000. Many contractors weren’t interested in trying to work with us on such a small budget.” Part of the project involved raising the ceiling in the existing kitchen, changing the locations and size of the door openings to the kitchen, and removing an old pantry. “We are big on entertaining and having friends over,” said Michael. “We wanted to create an open, fluid space.” To update the countertops, Sawyer (pictured at left) used pre-made granite decks that are available from GS Building Supply, www.gscabinetandgranite.com. They custom fit the granite countertops right on the spot, saving time and money. “Craig found a low-cost granite dealer in Seattle and it was a custom fit. This was fiton-the-fly so to speak and without Craig we would not have known this was even possible,” said Michael. Originally, the Warmingtons were leaning towards hardwood flooring for the new kitchen, but after some careful consideration, they decided to wait until the twins were a little older before making such a large investment. Instead, they settled on vinyl flooring by Kardean, available from Associated, Inc., in Seattle. The lighting takes the cake, according to Audrey, who loves the way it opens the space up even more. The lighting was courtesy of Juno and was probably the one item in the project that was not done with an eye on cost, but the Warmingtons decided it was worth the splurge. “I wanted to do the job because I was interested in doing a project that was tasteful and economical. I am always trying to convince people that good design is a function of taste, not budget,” Sawyer explained. The final cost for the entire remodel project came to roughly $60,000. “I’m all about esthetics and Michael’s all about functionality because he is the cook in the family,” explained Audrey. “Craig really worked with us and married the two concepts to create a finished product we both love. He designed a space we can be proud of to call our home.

Words of wisdom, etiquette & advice for the Eastside scenester
Ask Rose
Dear Rose, Close friends of ours, who can easily afford it, are notorious tightwads. When dining with us, they ALWAYS “share a salad, entree, and dessert” and usually just “have water” as a beverage. This is embarrassing and on-going situation for my wife and me. They could easily each order something and then “box it up” if they don’t eat it all. The restaurant industry could not survive with people like this. What do you recommend? Thank you for your time. – “M. I. Mike” Dear Mercer Island Mike, First, a gentleman should never discuss one’s own finances, let alone a friend’s, and what you assume they can or cannot afford. That aside, times are changing and our economy is challenging for many. We should not be so sensitive about this. Some of the great restaurants in our area have policies that make it easy to split entrees. Chef and restaurant owner, John Howie responded to my question by stating “we would never charge for a split plate. To do so would not be putting the guest first.” He shared that in his restaurants that they “don’t encourage splitting plates, but they would never charge the guest extra in doing so.” He mentioned that the goal would be to keep the food presentation similar, if not exactly, like the original. Many restaurants are now offering smaller entrée plates at a lower price; along with an extended ‘happy hour’ where certain dishes are offered a lower price. This might be a good compromise. As for the water, there are too many reasons to list why people order just water. It is an option they are entitled to exercise if they want.
Dear Rose,
I am an employer, and I recently called a prospective employee. She did not answer, so I was forced to listen to rings tones consisting of almost 30 seconds of rap music, which included some swear words and comments on ones anatomy. Needless to say, I hung up and did not consider her for the job. Could you please help me spread the word that as an employer, the most irritating words in the English language are “please enjoy the music while your party is reached” and then be forced to listen to someone else’s choice of music. Help me Rose! – Irritated and Fed up
Dear Irritated,
Your choice is simple. Go to dinner with them or not, but I would not bring it up and try to change their ways. Do your best to enjoy your ongoing friendship with them. .....................................................................................
Dear Rose, I have a friend who shared with me her ongoing frustration about her teenager’s constant urge to text, instead of placing a phone call or even speaking in person one on one. She is concerned because they text 24/7 with all of their friends, and even when they order a pizza! If she is so worried, why does she not just take their phones away? – Frustrated Friend Dear Friend , Possibly your friend was just venting, and does not want to
hear your wisdom or approach on this subject. In fact, if she is just airing her concerns and not asking for your advice, she does not want your advice. If she asks, share your thoughts and be prepared to be disappointed when she does not follow your advice. More probably than not the best thing you can do as her friend is to just listen.
Nobody over 12 should select ringback tones to be used on a cell phone that is used for business. It is understandable that you would not take serious someone who engaged in this kind of juvenile behavior. I would not have hired her either. That said, I am asking my readers to share their thoughts on this issue. Readers, what is the new acceptable protocol in this rapidly evolving environment?

Regarding texting generally, as a parent we must prepare our children to succeed in this world when they leave home. Like you, I question if a parent is truly preparing a young adolescent with the proper interpersonal and social skills that are crucial to succeed in college and later in the business world if texting is the predominant communication method they utilize. She could take away their phones, but won’t. We must understand the role of evolving social media, currently texting but next year something else, and its impact on all of our lives today and adjust, even when we feel a bit like a dinosaur. .........................................................................
Dear Rose, I am tired of receiving so many emails at work form other employees that have poor grammar and spelling. Why don’t people take time to proof before they hit send? – Grammar Police Dear GP, TOO FUNNY!!! Please write back when you have a real
problem and quit trying to pull my leg. Thank you for the humor. ........................................................................

GEEK Comedian Tom Wilson appears at Parlor Live Comedy Club, Sept. 2-4
september
A
lthough best known for his work as George McFly’s tormentor, Biff Tannen, in the beloved “Back to the Future” franchise, actor Tom Wilson’s portfolio boasts a plethora of diverse roles, including Coach Ben Fredricks on “Freaks and Geeks,” and Tom “Maniac” Marshall on Wing Commander Academy – among many others. Today, in addition to his film and television work, Wilson is pursuing another passion – stand-up comedy, and will be performing at Bellevue’s Parlor Live Comedy Club from Sept 2-4. The Scene recently caught up with Wilson and grilled him on his career’s highlights, sources of inspiration, and what he loves about Seattle.
SCENE: Do people constantly
recognize you as Biff over anyone else you have played? What kind of comments have you received about your work in that role?
WILSON: I’m recognized most frequently from Back To The Future, but there are so many different niches of fans out there. Lots of people recognize me from “Freaks and Geeks,” many from my work in the computer game “Wing Commander,” quirky groups know me from “Ghost Whisperer,” or “Ed,” and even a bunch from watching my YouTube videos that have millions of hits. SCENE: How did you like your role on Freaks and Geeks? Were you disappointed it wasn’t continued? How does it feel to see so many of the main cast members like

Jason Segal, Seth Rogen and James Franco hitting it big now?
WILSON: “Freaks and Geeks” was a real highlight for me. I had a blast doing it with a very creative cast and production team, and it was very disappointing to have it end so soon. Judd Apatow called me at the end to say, “Well, you’re a regular on the show now, you’re going to marry Bill’s mom, and be in every episode, and we’re thinking about having you direct an episode. Oh ...and we’re cancelled. Sorry.” But the show has garnered an incredible following from the DVD set, which is the best DVD set of a project that I’ve ever seen. I still watch those episodes and marvel at how good the show was. SCENE: Who is your comedic inspiration and why? WILSON: Steve Martin actually used me in his act during a show in 1978. He had
me stand up, he belittled me in front of thousands, and had me do a card trick in which I ended up looking like a fool. I thought it was the coolest thing that ever happened to me, and felt that if I was hit by a truck later that night, it would have all been worth it. When I became a professional comedian years later, Richard Pryor was an example of the combination of intimacy, personal anecdotes, and flights of imaginative dynamite that I still try to emulate. I mean emulate it as a big white guy who doesn’t use those exact words or anything.
SCENE: What would you say has been the highlight(s) of your career? Any goals you would like to reach in the future? WILSON: My career has had an incredible number of highlights, but as a live performer, the excitement is always about the next show, it really is. That’s why performers do it. We really don’t know for sure what’s going to happen tomorrow night, but if the past is any indication, it’s going to be a lot of fun. Come and see. My show comes with a guarantee. If you don’t have a great time, it’s a ‘you’ problem. I guarantee it. To read more on Tom Wilson, visit www.thebellevuescene.com.
