2022 FUN IN THE SUMMERTIME

SATURDAY, MAY 28, 2022 | 11

There’s a lot to do, whether you’re into biking, hiking, running, swimming, golf ... just about everything. TRAILS

The Bemidji area is a recreational lover’s dream, with a wide range of opportunities, including a network of trails for biking, hiking and running in the summer months. The area features nine trails for cross country skiing within a 15-mile radius of Bemidji, with most open to non-ski season hiking and mountain biking. The paved Paul Bunyan Trail is part of an impressive statewide system, allowing cyclists to connect with Guthrie, Walker and beyond. On June 8, there’s the Chippewa Triathlon if you are really adventurous.

DISC GOLF

The 18-hole disc golf course is located in Bemidji’s City Park. This wooded course features two levels of difficulty, concrete tee pads and water hazards. The parking lot entrance for the disc golf course is off of 23rd Street Northwest.

DANCING

The Suzy and Hondo School of Dance is tucked in the forest and located on Tyler Avenue Southeast in Bemidji Township. Since 1998, the school has offered group and private lessons. They teach social, ballroom, Latin and swing dances. Once goals are firmly established you can begin to combine lessons, practice sessions and dancing nights out.

TENNIS

There are two tennis organizations in the Bemidji area: Bemidji Tennis and the Bemidji Area Tennis Association. The mission of Bemidji Tennis is to support the players, parents, volunteers and coaches who make the Bemidji High School teams successful on and off the court. Bemidji Tennis is a non-profit organization whose proceeds support the Lumberjacks and a variety of offseason programs. Details at bemidjitennis.com. The Bemidji Area Tennis Association offers year’round activities for local and visiting players. It offers practice match setups, summer doubles leagues (men’s, women’s and mixed), group lessons, private lessons, 10-and-under lessons and winter groups. It sponsors five certified teaching professionals. Details at bemidji.usta.com.

The concrete Bemidji Skate Park is located on 23rd Street Northwest in Bemidji. Hours are from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. There are no fees for using this park in any fashion they choose such as skateboarding, BMX biking and more. It is surrounded by gorgeous trees, grass and shrubberies to have an eye appeal of comfort. Lots of parking is available that is shared with a new playground, Bemidji Curling Club, Disc golf and a large field for other sporting needs.

PARKS

Bemidji and Beltrami County boast many parks, ranging from neighborhood playgrounds to lakeside beaches. Diamond Point Park has a swimming beach, walking trails and picnic and play areas. Some other popular parks are Cameron Park, Bemidji City Park and Nymore Park. Paul Bunyan Park now features an inclusive playground for people of all abilities. Popular county parks include Three Island and Movil Maze.

PICKLEBALL

This relatively new sport is becoming popular, and Bemidji has the facilities to promote the game. There are several courts at Bemidji’s Algoma Park, and it’s also offered occasionally at the Gillett Wellness Center and the National Guard Armory.

GOLF

The Bemidji Town & Country Club, located on the north shore of Lake Bemidji, hosts one of northern Minnesota’s premier golf courses. Its biggest event is the annual Birchmont tournament. Other area courses include Maple Ridge, Castle Highlands, Sand Trap and Greenwood, each complete with driving ranges and power carts.

SCUBA DIVING

The Dive Depot offers scuba and snorkeling education, equipment, experiences and travel opportunities. Instructors and staff are professionals eager to help you succeed in your dreams of becoming a scuba diver. At the Dive Depot, you can start your diving adventures with your Open Water Scuba Diving class and can work your way up to assistant instructor.

… and boating too

Fishing

There isn’t a better way to enjoy the lakes than cruising on the water. Fishing is a passionate activity among locals. The larger recreational lakes are popular for sailing, waterskiing and pontooning. Many visitors and local community members like to boat through several lakes via the Mississippi River. Lake Bemidji and Lake Irving are the showcases for the city, offering excellent opportunities for walleye, northern pike, yellow perch and muskies. There are many opportunities to introduce young people to the sport of fishing. Bemidji’s annual Take A Kid Fishing event will be held on Wednesday, June 8, and the state’s Take A Kid Fishing Weekend is planned for June 10-12. Minnesotans age 16 or older who take a child 15 or younger fishing don’t need a license that weekend, and opportunities for inexperienced, beginner anglers abound throughout Minnesota. The local Fishing Has No Boundaries event is scheduled June 18, providing fishing experiences for people with disabilities.

Just how tall is Paul Bunyan?

Bemidji

Where is Bemidji located?

• 90 miles south of Rainy River, Ontario • 112 miles southwest of Fort Frances, Ontario on US Highway 71 • 113 miles east of Grand Forks on US Highway 2 • 143 miles west of Duluth on US Highway 2 • 211 miles northwest of Minneapolis

What does “Bemidji” mean?

• Bemidji is derived from the Ojibwe (Chippewa) phrase ‘Bay-me-ji-gamaug’ meaning “flowing through or across,” designating the course of the Mississippi River through Lake Bemidji.

How big is Lake Bemidji?

...and other interesting tidbits

When do the leaves turn color?

• Average peak season for fall colors is the week of September 22.

What is the population of the city?

• 15,277 in 2020, according to factfinder.census.gov. But that number can be deceiving, because so many people live in nearby townships and still consider Bemidji home. According to the 2010 census, the populations of the six adjacent townships (Eckles, Northern, Turtle River, Grant Valley, Bemidji and Frohn) and the city of Wilton totaled 14,058. Add that to the city of Bemidji and you get 27,489. Bemidji is a regional hub. According to the most recent ESRI Community Profile, the population within a 15-mile radius of Bemidji was 39,396; within a 30-mile radius it was 62,885.

How does the Mississippi River flow “north” to Bemidji?

• The continental divide is located in the area. Water flows north to Hudson Bay and south to the Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi River flows north into Lake Bemidji, then east with the northernmost point of the river east of Lake Bemidji. It continues to the southeast to Grand Rapids, Minn., before it takes a more southerly direction.

• Lake Bemidji has 14.8 miles of shoreline, covers 6,420 acres and is 76 feet at its deepest point.

How was Lake Bemidji formed?

• Local legend claims the lake is Paul Bunyan’s footprint; however geologists claim it was formed from glacial activity. The Mississippi River flows through the southern portion. The power dam downstream helps control the water level.

Where is the headwaters of the Mississippi River?

• 31 miles southwest of Bemidji on US Highway 71. The headwaters is located in Itasca State Park.

How tall is Paul Bunyan and how old is he?
