Poets should prepare three original SLAM poems, one for each of the three rounds. Poems must be under three minutes of reading time, new in the last three years
and never previously performed at a state or local event. Participants are not required to memorize their poems and are welcome to use notes, the release said. Judges, selected from the audience, give each reading a score on a scale of 1 to 10. The poets with the highest scores move forward to a second, then third round. The top three in the final round win cash prizes of $100, $50 and $25.

Big Bog State Recreation Area to host candlelit snowshoe
WASKISH — A winter’s glow candlelit snowshoe will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, at Big Bog State Recreation Area.
Participants will start at the northern unit’s Old Caribou Camp trailhead and loop through the north woods. Afterward, attendees can warm up by a cozy fire and enjoy some refreshments, the release said.

Watermark Art Center to resume intercultural creative circles
BEMIDJI — Watermark Art Center will host its second series of intercultural creative circles from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, now through Feb. 26, at Watermark, 505 Bemidji Ave. N.
During the eight sessions, participants will learn embellishment techniques from both woodland and Scandinavian traditions, including Osage and Ho-Chunk style Indigenous ribbon applique arts, painting with natural dyes on hide, embroidery and woodland applique, a release said.
Bead artist Martina Isham will kick off the series with beadwork. During the February sessions, artist Sharon Nordrum will lead the circles.

The reception will open with a hand drum ceremony featuring DesJarlait’s son Miziway Migizi.
The exhibit depicts, documents and defines the life of the Ojibwe people as DesJarlait perceives it visually.
His work engages the viewer in a visual language through which cultural diversity is the message, a release said. Robert DesJarlait (Endaso-Giizhik) of Red Lake Nation is a visual artist, muralist, writer, historian and educator. His career in art spans over four decades.
His paintings and illustrations focus on Ojibwe family life, cultural traditions and origin stories. He has served as a cultural mentor and advisor on community art projects and has illustrated curriculum units for American Indian Education Programs and

Headwaters Music and Arts offering adult pottery program
BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts is offering an Adult Pottery Program throughout the year from 6 to 8 p.m. on Mondays and 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, at Headwaters, 519 Minnesota Ave. NW.
This open studio-style program is for all skill levels and includes supervision and individualized instruction. Participants can expect to practice using coil, slab, and pinch methods; learn paint and glaze techniques; and receive an introduction to wheel throwing, a release said.
A subscription to the Monday or Wednesday Adult Pottery Program also gives participants access to monthly social gatherings with other adult pottery members and select open pottery hours.
Open pottery is selfdirected studio time in Headwaters Pottery Studio to practice techniques. While no formal instruction is provided during open pottery hours, volunteer studio hosts will be in attendance to give support and encouragement. Open pottery hours are held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesdays and 4 to 6 p.m. on Fridays.
First-time participants in the Adult Pottery Program will receive a complimentary 12.5 pounds of clay when they first sign up. After that, clay can be purchased through Headwaters Music and Arts. Only clay purchased through Headwaters can be fired at Headwaters. Firing and glaze are all provided free of charge.

Q: Why do TV shows and movies always use 555 in their phone numbers? Does no one have those numbers in the real world?
A: Numbers starting with 555 have been reserved for fictional uses, to avoid the holders of real numbers from getting a whole bunch of misled or prank calls.
It’s a practice that dates back at least to the 1960s — the earliest example I could find is the 1961 Western comedy “The Second Time Around,” starring Debbie Reynolds (“Singin’ in the Rain,” 1952), which mentions the phone number 5553485.
So why was 555 free?
In the early days of the telephone system, phone numbers actually began with two letters to indicate the region of the number. If you remember the old Glenn Miller “Pennsylvania 6-5000,” that’s a
reference to this old phone system, and specifically to the number for the Hotel Pennsylvania, whose number at the time was PE-6-5000.
As the population grew and the phone system got more complicated, systems dropped the letterbased prefixes to go fully numerical, so PE-6-5000 became 7365000 (because P corresponded with six on old rotary phones, and E with 3).
This left 555 basically free because there were very few exchange names that translated to 55 (since 5 corresponded with JKL on the dial).
Since then, some 555 numbers have been added back into use. Today, only 555-0100 to 555-0199 are officially reserved for fiction. And, of course, it’s all voluntary. Films and shows have been using other numbers all along. “Bruce Almighty” (2003), for example, gave a 776 number as the number for God himself (played by Morgan Freeman, “Driving Miss Daisy,” 1989). It resulted in hundreds of reported prank calls to people across the country and as far away as England (since Freeman, as God, didn’t give his area code).

BEMIDJI — Headwaters Music and Arts will host a Rock Band group class for musicians with one to two years of experience in voice, guitar, drums, piano or bass.
Participants in grades 4-12 will work together as a band to choose what songs they want to practice and learn, drawing from the many rad decades of rock ‘n’ roll, a release said.

Second round of opioid remediation grants available
BEMIDJI — Beltrami County’s Opioid Steering Committee has once again opened up applications for grant funding and invited community organizations and partners to apply.
An estimated $70,000 is available for the second round of funding, which will run from July 2025 to December 2026. The estimated minimum amount awarded will be $5,000 and the maximum $30,000.
Approved uses of the remediation funds include treating opioid use disorders, preventing misuse of opioids,
supporting those in treatment and recovery and other opioid-related harm reduction activity, a release said. The grants will be competitive, with applications reviewed by a committee of professionals with a broad range of relevant experience.
The applications for the grants are available on the Beltrami County website and should be submitted by email to amy. bowles@co.beltrami. mn.us no later than noon on Feb. 28. Recipients of the funds will be notified by April 21. These grants are a part of the funding provided by a multi-million dollar settlement with the state of Minnesota with opioid distributors and manufacturers. Beltrami County is expecting to receive $2,826,466 between 2022 and 2038.
SWCD to hold Grazing Workshop
LAPORTE — Hubbard County Soil and Water Conservation will hold its annual Grazing Workshop from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, at Guthrie Community Center, 44255 Front St., in Laporte.
This free program will focus on sustainable grazing practices that maximize ranchers’ bottom dollars, a release said.
Steve Kenyon, operator of Greener Pastures Ranching in Alberta, Canada, will be the guest speaker. Kenyon is renowned for his expertise in regenerative farming and innovative grazing practices that emphasize economic and environmental sustainability, explained the release.
Attendees will gain valuable insights into topics such as grazing principles, financial management, cash flow analysis, paddock design, predator prevention and integrating small ruminants with cattle.
In addition to Kenyon’s presentations, a farmer panel will share practical ideas and discuss infrastructure solutions to help participants implement adaptive grazing techniques on their own farms.

Bemidji State to offer Beaver Happy Hour event for alumni

BEMIDJI — The Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area is participating in the Child and Adult Care Food Program to offer afterschool meals to kids at the club. Free meals will be provided to all enrolled children. Meals will meet nutritional standards established by the USDA, a release said. Meals will be offered from 2:45 to 4 p.m.
Monday through Friday, with select days off. The program will end on June 4, 2025.
