is famously devoted to his craft. For proof, look no further than “Cast Away” (2000), for which he first put on weight to look like a regular, somewhat-out-of-shape working man, and then immediately had to cut it — 55 pounds’ worth, to be exact. (He also grew his own hair out for the role — that’s not a blond wig he’s wearing.)

For the production team, the trick to managing this transformation was to just take a whole year off.

In a 2000 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hanks said it was director Robert Zemeckis (who previously directed Hanks in 1994’s “Forrest Gump”) who came up with the bold idea. “Bob was like, ‘You know what we can do? If we really wanted to do this right, we’d make the first half of this movie, then take a year off and make the second half!’”

While Hanks was starving himself for a year (“The only thing I did not give up was coffee,” he told EW), Zemeckis went off and did a whole other movie — the horror movie “What Lies Beneath,” released a few months before “Cast Away” in 2000.

“Cast Away” was, of course, a critical and commercial smash, so it’s hard to remember that, beyond just the schedule hijinks, the movie was a huge gamble.

“I think that’s probably the great fear we have with ‘Cast Away,’” Hanks said in the same interview, which was published a week before the film’s release. “Because people are like, ‘I understand you’re on this island, and you don’t talk, and it’s just you, and you don’t do anything for an hour?’” Two Oscars
