Date: October 29, 2024

Time 6:00 - 7:00 pm

Paul Bunyan Center

When children enter foster care, we provide them with safe and nurturing foster homes. Our goal is to ensure their well-being while their families receive the necessary support. We offer a range of services, including respite care, short-term and longterm placements, and foster-to-adopt options. As a licensed adoption agency, we are dedicated to helping youth and parents find permanent family settings. All our services are provided free of charge. Foster and adoptive parents come from diverse backgrounds—some work from home or an office, some own or rent their homes, and some have large families or none at all. Regardless of their circumstances, the impact they

make is extraordinary. This class will outline the licensing process, required training, and what to expect when a child is placed in your home, and it will provide an opportunity for you to ask questions. Introduction to the Great Highland Bagpipe with John Egelhof

Wednesdays- October 2December 11, 2024

6:00- 7:30 pm

Paul Bunyan Center

Introductory class utilizing the practice chanter (PC), a handheld recorder-sized instrument on which is learned the basic notes, embellishments and progressing to learning tunes. A new beginner can expect to spend on average a year on the PC before progressing to an actual set of bagpipes, dependent on age, physical ability and the learner’s own determination. The class will cover the history, development and use of the Great Highland Bagpipe (GBH). Students will be guided by lesson books produced by the College of Piping in Scotland, and expected to practice on their own and keep up with the class, guided by class discussion, recorded and live music and video lesson supplements. Private lessons are also available outside of class. At the end of the class, students can expect to have learned to play one or two tunes on the PC, and make an informed decision on whether to advance towards the next step, such as obtaining a set of actual pipes and applying their new-found knowledge.

Knowledge of music is not necessary, though helpful, nor any cultural or heritage connection to the British Isles. What is needed is an appreciation of Celtic music and perseverance. The GBH, the national instrument of Scotland and the most unique and storied instrument in the history of mankind, is not an instrument for the faint of heart.

Students should bring a Dunbar (or other quality brand) Polypenco Practice Chanter with reed (not a cheap Amazon rosewood PC), regular or long size with countersunk holes (ranging from $75 and up) and a copy of the National Piping Center “Green Tutor” book, Vol. 1 ($40.00) These are available through Henderson’s Piping Supplies, https://www. hendersongroupltd.com/
