Northern Lakes scholarship pageant for females ages 13-18 and 18-26 will take place at 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, at the Bemidji Community Theater.
Contestants ages 13-18 and 18-26 are currently being accepted to compete in the teen and miss categories of the pageant. The deadline to register is July 8. The competition will consist of a private interview, onstage question, talent, health and fitness, and evening gown portion, a release said. Winner of the Miss Northern Lakes title will win a $500 scholarship.
The winners of both the teen and miss categories will advance to the state competition to represent the community and have the chance to win more scholarships, become Miss Minnesota and advance to the Miss America pageant.

Parks and Rec to hold virtual youth fishing competition
July 15-22
BEMIDJI — The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department is set to hold a virtual fishing competition for youth in Hubbard, Clearwater, Cass and Beltrami counties from July 15-22.
The competition is open to youth ages 16 and younger in Hubbard, Clearwater, Cass and Beltrami counties. Fish can be caught at any time between Saturday, July 15, and Saturday, July 22.
Once registered, participants will receive a Bemidji Parks and Recreation Tournament Card. After catching a fish, anglers must take a photo of the fish with the Tournament Card visible in the photo. Catch and release is encouraged.
Prizes will be awarded for the longest fish, smallest fish and largest variety of species caught, a release said.
The cost to participate in the competition is $10 per person.

Shawn Phillips to perform at Rail River Folk School July 18
BEMIDJI — Twentyfive years since his last visit, Shawn Phillips will be returning to Bemidji for a performance at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 18, at the Rail River Folk School, 303 Railroad St. SW.
“Shawn Phillips is one of the most fascinating and enigmatic musicians to come out of the early ‘70s singer-songwriter boom,” a release said. “The mere fact that he was a musician as much as a singer and songwrit-
er made him stand out, and helped him attract a dedicated following.”
Phillips has produced 27 albums. His work is rooted in folk-rock but straddles other genres, including jazz fusion and funk.
Phillips was once called “the best kept secret in the music business” by Bill Graham, the release continued. He also taught Joni Mitchell her first guitar techniques, taught George Harrison of the Beatles his first lessons on Sitar, wrote the music to Donovan’s “Season of the Witch” and has played with many of the finest musicians in the world including Eric Clapton and Steve Winwood.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the show. Tickets cost $25 each and can be purchased at the door with cash or check. Children ages 10 and under are free. A cash bar will be
available for those ages 21 and older.

Babes Burnout
Car Show slated
BEMIDJI — The Sanford Center will host its first-ever Babes Burnout Car Show event on Saturday, July 15, at the Sanford Center parking lot.
The event will include several attractions, including a car show featuring both new and old-school categories, a swap meet, a beer tent with live music, vendors, food trucks, a kid zone, a cornhole tournament, speakers and more.
“The goal of this show is to provide Bemidji with another reason to get outside and enjoy the beautiful summer,” Bobby Anderson, Sanford Center’s assistant general manager, said in a release. “We wanted to reduce the barriers by making it a free event for all to attend and to grow the car culture in the northern region of Minnesota.”

Bemidji Public Library to host ‘Gardening at the Library’
BEMIDJI — The Bemidji Public Library and the Bemidji Garden Club are set to hold a “Gardening at the Library” program at 3 p.m. on Friday, July 21, at the library, 509 America Ave.
Participants will discover the beauty of native flowers and pollinators as they explore the library’s front gardens, a release said. The event is geared toward kids and families.
“As we all know, birds and insects are facing challenges adapting to our changing world,” the release said. “But, did you know that there are certain plants and flowers we can cultivate here in northern Minnesota to help them? In this free program, we’ll learn about the best plants and flowers to put in our
environment to support the key parts of our ecosystem.”

Four Pines Bookstore to host ‘Where’s Waldo?’
BEMIDJI — Four Pines Bookstore is set to host a “Where’s Waldo?” search through July 22 at participating businesses in downtown Bemidji.
“Four Pines Bookstore is one of 300 U.S.-wide bookstores to participate in the Find Waldo Local 2023 event,” a release said. “This campaign celebrates the ‘Shop Local’ message and invites us to host a family-friendly ‘Where’s Waldo’ scavenger hunt in our downtown community.”
Participants can find Waldo at a dozen small businesses throughout downtown Bemidji. Passport cards for the event can be picked up in-store at Four Pines Bookstore.
To conclude the event, Four Pines Bookstore will host a “Where’s Waldo?” party at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 22, for all participants. The celebration includes an in-store scavenger hunt, coloring pages, treats and giveaways.
Parks and Rec to host Beach Bash July 22
The city of Bemidji Parks and Recreation Department will host a Beach Bash from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 22, at South Shore Park, 527 Lake Shore Drive NE. This event is free to attend and will include beach and lawn games and watercraft activities, a release said.

BEMIDJI — A Defensive Driving Refresher Course will be offered from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25, through Zoom.
The four-hour refresher course is for drivers age 55 and older that have already had an eight-hour beginner’s course and want to continue receiving a discount on their insurance. The instructor for the classes will be retired Minnesota State Patrol Trooper Mike Flatley.

Forest History Center to host ‘Be a Naturalist’ family day
GRAND RAPIDS — The Forest History Center will host a “Be a Naturalist” family day event from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, at the History Center, 2609 County Road 76.
During the day, visitors of all ages can explore a range of activities centered around the wonders of nature. Highlights include a 90-minute trolley ride at noon and opportunities to meet the Forest History Center’s new draft horses throughout the day, a release said.
A raptor show by The Nature Connection will take place at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Guests can learn more about these birds of prey and their role in the local ecosystem. More wildlife discovery will be available in the Screen House, where visitors can chase dragonflies and find macroinvertebrates in the Mississippi River.
Various crafting activities will be available, including fly casting demos with Trout Unlimited, building and painting birdhouses, making paper, plaster tracks and more, the release added.
Additional organizations with booths at the
event include the USDA, the Minnesota Naturalist Program, the Master Gardener Program, the North Country Trail Association and more. There is no additional cost to participate outside of regular site admission

Gallery North to hold Tall Timbers acrylic painting class July 30
BEMIDJI — Gallery North is set to host a Tall Timbers acrylic painting class from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 30, at the gallery, 310 Fourth St. NW in downtown Bemidji.
Instructed by Darcy Brambrink, participants of the class will learn an acrylic technique of negative painting to achieve a finished 11” by 14” by 1.5” wrap-around painting.
“Negative painting is a technique that takes thought but can be learned by practice,” a release said. “Students will learn to chisel out pines, sculpt and develop color combinations that will make the painting burst with color.”
Students will be supplied with canvas and acrylic paints but will need to bring No. 1, 6
and 10 flat brushes and at least one No. 6 flatangle brush, as well as a hair dryer and a paint shirt. Refreshments will be offered.
The class will last approximately three hours but may run as long as four hours, the release said.
The cost to participate is $80 per person and the class size is limited to six participants. The class is geared toward ages 16 and older.
Students can make their payment to Darcy Brambrink at Gallery North Bemidji in the form of cash or a personal check prior to the class.
