Senior Community Clean-Up set for Oct. 28
BEMIDJI — The 24th Annual Senior Community Clean-Up Day will be held from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, with volunteer registration and continental breakfast at the Boys and Girls Club of the Bemidji Area, 1600 Minnesota Ave. NW. Volunteers are needed to help with leaf raking for senior citizens 60 years and older or people living with a disability who reside within the Bemidji city limits. The event is sponsored by Northwoods Caregivers,
Community Resource Connections and the United Way of Bemidji Area. All volunteers will receive recognition, door prizes and gift certificates to local restaurants for lunch at noon. Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves and their own rake. Clearwater County History Center’s 2023 exhibits set to close SHEVLIN — The Clearwater County History Center in Shevlin will close its 2023 exhibits at the end of October. The last day to view the historic buildings will be Sunday, Oct. 29, other than the Halverson Log Cabin, which will remain open until snow prohibits visitors from reaching it. The cabin will be decorated for Christmas and be part of the Festival of Trees, a release said. The museum will be closed Nov. 17 through Dec. 2 to prepare for the festival. The last day attendees can view the exhibits in the main museum gallery will be Friday, Nov. 17. The work exhibit will be removed on Nov. 2, the toy exhibit will be dismantled on Nov. 9 and the Shevlin and Bagley Quasquicentennial exhibits will be taken down on Nov. 16. NEWS BRIEFS ‘It’s Only Clay’ exhibit opens Nov. 3 at Watermark
BEMIDJI — The 18th annual “It’s Only Clay” national competition and exhibition will be open from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, at Watermark Art Center, 505 Bemidji Ave. N. “It’s Only Clay” is a juried exhibit of functional ceramics from around the U.S. featuring work by 2023 juror, Brad Bachmeier. The project is a collaboration between Watermark Art Center and BSU’s Department of Technology Art and Design. Bachmeier is chair of the School of Art at Minnesota State University Moorhead, where he serves as the program director of Art Education and as the Art Therapy program coordinator. He has been recognized by the Carnegie Foundation as a nominee for U.S. Professor of the Year and was awarded Minnesota Higher Arts Educator of the Year by the Art Educators of Minnesota, a release said. Bachmeier will also lead a hands-on alternative firing workshop for ceramic artists from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Bemidji State University. Registration is required for the workshop as space is limited but there is no fee to participate. “This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Region 2 Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund and in part by a grant from the Bemidji Area Arts Endowment, a component fund of the Northwest Minnesota Foundation,” the release said. The open house will include awards and presentations at 6 p.m. The event is free and

BEMIDJI — Bemidji State University and Northwest Technical College will host on-campus Halloween-themed events and activities on Oct. 31 at BSU and NTC campuses. Trick-or-Treating at the Residence Halls is back at BSU for another year of Halloween fun. Residents in BSU’s Birch, Linden, Oak and Tamarack halls will be on hand to deliver treats and possibly a few tricks from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31, or until costumed visitors have drained participating rooms of candy. Rooms with trick-ortreat tags are participating in the event, and visitors can pick up lists of participating rooms at each building’s front desk. Rural development loans available from USDA BEMIDJI — USDA Rural Development is
now accepting applications for low- and very low-income individuals and families seeking to purchase or repair a home in a rural area. The Direct Home Loan program offers financing to qualified very-low and low-income applicants who are unable to qualify for traditional financing, a release said. No down payment is required, and the interest rate could be as low as 1% with a subsidy. Applicants must meet income and credit guidelines and demonstrate repayment ability. The program is available in rural communities of generally 35,000 people or less. The maximum loan amount is $40,000 at a 1% interest rate, repayable for a 20-year term and can be used to improve or modernize homes and do essential repairs, the release said. Grants of up to $10,000
are available to homeowners 62 and older and must be used to remove health or safety hazards, such as fixing a leaking roof, installing indoor plumbing or replacing a furnace. Time is limited to receive funds for the current fiscal year. Those interested can contact a USDA Rural Development Housing Specialist to see if they qualify at (218) 751-1942. USDA Rural Development loans and grants provide assistance that supports infrastructure improvements, business development, housing, community services such as schools, public safety and health care and highspeed internet access in rural areas.
